Our Jungle Written and Illustrated by Caimyn Lutze

This book was created as a presentation for Dr. Johnson’s Social Inequalities class. Its intention is to introduce young children to the concept of discrimination, so that they may learn not to judge one another based on appearance. This book was created at St. Norbert College in De Pere, WI during the Fall semester of the 2015-2016 school year, and was first printed in the St. Norbert College Print Center. It was created using Adobe Illustrator and InDesign and utilizes fonts Bell MT and Cooper.

All the animals in the jungle gather together.

There is always something they do not like about each other.

Ellie the elephant has too big a nose.

Gina the giraffe has a neck that is too long.

Larry the lemur has huge eyes.

Tim the turtle is just too slow.

Bruce the beaver has teeth that are too big.

Debbie the duck walks with a waddle.

Piper the parrot talks too much.

All the animals laughed and laughed.

Then Ellie spoke up.

“I use my big trunk for gathering water!

“My long neck helps me reach food,” Gina added.

Larry says that his big eyes help him see in the dark.

Tim adds that he lives longer because he is so slow.

“And I use my big teeth to chew on wood,” said Bruce.

Debbie waddles because of her webbed feet, and her webbed feet help her swim!

Piper the parrot makes beautiful sounds with his voice.

The animals finally saw that they love each other for who they are.
