About Allison Barnes Allison grew up in an extremely rural area, and had an assortment of agriculture around her. The cornfields, mountains and old farmhouses still inspire her, as she continues to visit them. When she was 15, her father gave her a Minolta 35mm camera and kept feeding her interest in image making, specially in black and white. By that time, she only took pictures that she liked, not knowing much about the medium’s history. For her, the day she became a real photographer was when she made a photograph in response to a poem entitled, Reflections on a Gift of Watermelon Pickle Received from a Friend Called Felicity, by John Tobias. That self-portrait was the beginning of her own unique way of working, the one that she still reflects on today. 5
