9 Well, we have never been so glad to see the end of summer. It’s certainly been a trying 3 months for everyone in Queensland and has no doubt made us all take stock, and treasure the more important things in our lives. In this edition, we had the pleasure of working with our ‘Guest Editor’ Emma. As a mum of 2 she worked with us on topics and ideas she felt other mums would relate to and want to know about. Thank you for your time, enthusiasm and ideas Emma. We’d also like to thank Cr. Linda Cooper for sharing a very private time in her life, as she battled post-natal depression.

AUTUMN 2011 EDITION
PREGNANCY - THE DAY WE WELCOMED
This was my second breech pregnancy. My first ended in a scheduled caesarean section due to lack of research and understanding of breech presentation on my part. I wanted things to be different for my second birth... After finding out my baby was breech at 32 weeks I tried everything to flip her around, Moxibustion, acupuncture, herbs, visualisation, lying upside down and music. It turns out she was staying in the breech position. I bought books, searched the internet and had long discussions with my midwife and husband about birth plans, possible outcomes and what felt right for us. By 42 weeks...Baby and I were ready! On Friday night after coming home from dinner I went to the toilet at about 8.30pm and felt a pop! My waters had broken so we called our midwife to let her know. After assessing the situation she said to give her a call back when things got moving a bit.
Everyone in the kitchen knew it was a girl but didn’t say anything, instead referring to her as ‘the bubba’ to save the surprise for me. I stood up to birth her head. She was slimy and chubby and beautiful...9 pounds, born at 1.30am. We went to lie down in the bedroom and wait for the placenta to birth; my husband, my new baby girl and myself, with my support group surrounding us - my mum, mother in law, and my beautiful midwife.
contractions just took off!
My 4 year old daughter slept throughout the birth and joined us in the morning. I had successfully birthed my breech baby, from a previously scarred uterus in the privacy and safe environment of my own home.
I felt happiest labouring on my hands and knees and butting my head into the lounge when a contraction came. My husband was rubbing the small of my back as hard as he could to counteract the pain.
I made a very informed choice to have my baby this way and it could not have happened without immense help and guidance from my midwife who had laden me with literature, websites, forums and support.
I had a mantra repeating in my head, something that I had learnt from a mediation CD... ”make friends with your out breathe”... so I did just that, and it helped immensely.
It was an experience I shall remember and cherish forever.
We ended up calling her back in 20 minutes as the
My breathing changed into a grunting sound so we moved to the birthing pool at about 12.30am, which was located in my kitchen. I pushed gently for about an hour. As I crouched in the water, her little bum emerged first and then out flopped her right foot and after a brief pause it started kicking around in the water. The sensation of a baby wriggling in my pelvis felt unreal and slightly uncomfortable!

It is a process between a woman and her caregivers to help her decide what will, or will not be done to her and her body. Informed consent also empowers a woman to decide about her care and how it will affect her baby. When a test, procedure, or medication is proposed it’s imperative to get the following information before making a decision. • What is the reason for the

You should always take time to make your decision and it should always be made free of threat or coercion. However if there is a state of emergency, your care provider will let you know this and complete informed consent may or may not be given. PREGNANCY - DOULA
So you are pregnant! Do you feel overwhelmed and unsure of what to do next? Not many newly pregnant women know about the existence of doulas, who can help pave the sometimes rocky path to a satisfying birth experience. The word "doula" is an ancient Greek word meaning "female servant," but today it stands for a person, usually a woman, who gives physical and emotional support to a mother and her family during pregnancy, birth and after childbirth. A doula is experienced and trained in childbirth and works alongside midwives and doctors in hospitals, birth centres and homebirths, but is not actually a medical professional. Instead, she provides a consistency of care throughout pregnancy, birth and the newborn period that is often lacking in today's medical system. Studies around the world have shown that through using a doula, women have fewer caesarean sections (45% less), they reduce the use of synthetic oxytocin for inductions or augmentations (40%), pain medication (31%), epidurals (10-60%) and the use of forceps (34%). Also, it has been found that women have a higher self esteem (74% vs 59%), less depression (10% vs 23%) and less anxiety (28% vs 40%) at 6 weeks post-partum. A large factor for these percentages is that a doula supports a woman in her innate ability to birth. When a woman discovers this ability, she often finds that she can birth naturally, with minimal or no medical intervention. There are situations where medical intervention is necessary and saves lives, yet many births are possible without such measures. For the birth of my son, my partner and I hired a doula in my last six weeks of pregnancy. I would advise hiring a doula much earlier, such as in your first trimester, as there are so many benefits to be had from her support. We ended up with a lot of information to absorb in a very short amount of time, whereas over a full pregnancy there would have been more time to digest everything we needed to know. Yet, even with the short amount of time we had available, we benefited enormously, as many decisions we made would otherwise not have been fully informed. We originally planned to go to a hospital, as there were no homebirth midwives available at that time, and wanted to have a natural birth.

Although my son's birth ended up in an emergency caesarean and not the natural birth I had been hoping for, we were able to make it a much more positive experience
The process to become a doula can be a very personal decision, as Lynda Hay from Chrysalis Birth describes: "Becoming a doula was a natural progression for me. As a teenager I attended my first births when my sister had her children. I couldn’t understand why family members said that it would turn me off having my own children.

NEWBORNS - FNQ MULTIPLE BIRTH ASSOCIATION Here are a few more tips for those expecting multiples – by mother of twins & secretary of FNQ Multiple Birth Association, Karen Bradfield-Keary.
Having more than one baby definitely has its challenges. Joining a group like the FNQ Multiple Birth Association can give you support from those who know.
Come and celebrate Multiple Birth Week from Sunday the 13th to th 20 of March. Contact Karen Bradfield-Keary on 0439797221 for more information.
My biggest fear about having the twins was that I would never sleep again, which was about right for about 12 months. The biggest surprise has been just how different they are. Even though I had my suspicions this may be the case as they aren’t identical and they are boy and girl, but there is nothing similar about them. They have developed differently and at different stages. The nicest part is how well they get on. Just looking at each other can send them into peals of laughter, and if one is crying the other will come up and pat them on the head. Cathy with her twins Jack & Sarah
Biggest tip. Get organised! In the early days I used to do 12 bottles ahead of time, so everyone could just grab a bottle and feed a bub.
Baby bouncer/rockers The old wire frame type are very handy because they’re transportable and you can place one wire foot behind the other and rock them both at the same time with one foot while you eat Quantities You don’t need to buy 2 or three of everything. I managed to sleep my twins in the one cot until 6months of age, which also helps reduce the washing. Routine Get both babies in to the same routine. If you can achieve this, your days will be much easier to handle and it will help you to rest too. Get Support Get in touch with your local Community Health Centre and access their range of support services. For example, ask about their ‘extended midwifery service’ to have a midwife visit your home and their ‘Drop In’ clinics which operate at all the community health centres for newborns to 8weeks old. Get In Touch Get in touch with the Far North Queensland Multiple Birth Association Inc. This is a local organisation run entirely by multiple mums that have been or are going through the same experiences as you. You may also be able to pick up some bargains on larger items that are no longer required by their members.

But I didn’t and my first child was born extremely healthy and was so wanted that I thought he would suffocate from love. It was an easy birth, his sleeping patterns settled rapidly into a once-anight feed and I avoided the post-baby blues that quite often happen in the first week. I thought it was all pretty ‘cruisey’ but unfortunately the feeling of love only lasted a month. I can’t recall the exact moment when I started falling ‘out of love’ with my own child, but I vividly recall the feelings of displeasure when he demanded a feed, or wanted to be held. The original maternal instincts that seemed so forthcoming when he was born had flown out the window, along with my sanity. But to the outside world I appeared okay.
nursing centre – contemplating how long I could leave Nick at the front door until someone would pick him up. I thought about leaving him behind in shopping centres, and I went away on two holidays without him, once for two weeks. I didn’t miss him; in fact I dreaded returning home to this creature who demanded… all the time. A routine visit to the local GP became the defining moment when I understood what was going on. The GP asked me a series of questions which were part of a process of diagnosing depression. My responses obviously rang alarm bells and after a non-invasive chat he suggested that I take some medication that would help me cope. I think it was Prozac but I can’t really be sure because whilst he had recognised what I was dealing with, I still truly believed I could control the

That, in itself, was a stupid decision. Postnatal depression does not care how strong or controlled you are. From the outside looking in I still feel like it never happened to me. But unfortunately it did and it sours my memories of raising a delightful baby. When I fell pregnant with my second child Fraser, I cried for months, expecting that my family would have to go through it again and whilst the chances supposedly increase with subsequent births, it never happened. There is no rhyme or reason, and there is certainly no rationale of why some women are more prone to it than others. There is also no miracle cure but from experience I would recommend that all mothers at least be prepared for it, and to discuss options in advance with their family and their local GP. At least then you will have a support network ready in case you are one of the unlucky ones. As a postscript, both my boys are very aware of what I went through and I hope that in time, if they should ever experience it with their own wives, they’ll be able to give her all the support she needs and feel more than comfortable that Nanna can give back a little love that went missing in action years ago.

NEWBORNS - CIRCUMCISION
In males the term “circumcision” refers to the surgical removal of the prepuce/ foreskin of the penis. This is a piece of skin that overlaps the end of the penis (the glans). Circumcision has been performed as part of a cultural /religious procedure for thousands of years. In the 1950’s, more than 85% of Australian infants were circumcised. These days it is estimated that currently about 10-20% of boys are circumcised (Queensland has the highest rate) and worldwide about 20%. Circumcision is an emotive health issue. Current prevailing policy in Australia does not support routine neonatal circumcision. It is up to the parents to make an informed choice for their son.
Reasons you may choose to circumcise your son • Religious, cultural or cosmetic (to be the same as dad) • Reduction in urinary tract infections (UTI). These affect about 1%
of boys and are more slightly more likely in uncircumcised boys
• Penile cancer risk, though rare (1 in 100,000) is increased sixfold

It is thought Smegma may assist in the normal process of separation of the inner surface of the penis from the foreskin. It is important that the foreskin is never left retracted behind the glans as this can cause swelling, pain and risk of paraphimosis.

Holidaying with children can be frustrating if you’re travelling by road looking for the best possible place to stay so the little ones have something to do. Selecting a hotel where there is a decent pool and playground to keep all of your loved ones happy. It’s lunch time and where to go, what shall we eat? Yes, fast food is easy but can get quite costly and lacks nutritional value! Dinner time creeps up and you’re faced with the same decision again. What about the town you are staying at, haven’t you seen it all before? Then there is that edginess from the back seat...Are we there yet? Consider a cruise where those problems are removed. The kids won’t haunt you all day long as there are designated Kids Clubs for all ages which cover the toddlers, primary-school aged children through to the teens! Parents can relax in their own space, while the kids and teens have loads of fun and things to do every day. Each morning after breakfast they disappear, not to be seen again until lunch and then dinner time. With changing supervised daily activities from arts & crafts, movies, cartoons, scavenger hunts, birthday and pyjama parties, disco parties, talent shows, theme nights, hip hop classes, Play station 3 competitions, sports competitions and more. There is always something for them to do. Best of all, there are many cruise options around the world where children CRUISE FOR FREE, now try and beat this on your next land holiday. PREPARING TO FOSTER
I remember it was around my 5th birthday and I got a new present, in the way of a 2 year old foster brother we nicknamed ‘DJ’. He was this shy little boy with a cheeky smile who stayed with us until he was 17 and became one of many foster kids my parents would bring home to care for. My strongest memories really start when I was around four to five years old when I lived with my auntie, uncle and two cousins. I settled there and thought I was going to stay with them, which was okay because I was with family and my dad visited me sometimes. But of course I was moved on to another family where my younger brother and sister were

But I am glad I was fostered and had the chance to be loved and belong in my foster family. We are very close. My foster dad gave me away at my wedding. My foster mum was present at the birth of my first child. I have limited contact with my birth parents but my foster parents are involved in my life always.

PREPARING TO FOSTER
What types of care is needed? General Foster Care: Family based care for children and young people with moderate to high support needs. Specialist Foster Care: Children/Young people are deemed to have complex or extreme needs and are able to live in a family based placement with intensive support. Residential Care: Children/Young People are deemed to have moderate, high, complex or extreme needs and are living in a residential placement whilst waiting for a family based placement or it has been identified that a residential care setting will best meet their needs. Residential care models can range from meeting the therapeutic needs of the children to providing basic foster care support. How long do I need to care for these children? There are many types of placements needed. Short term/Emergency: This type of placement occurs when there is an unexpected family crisis and children may need to be moved very quickly. Respite fostering: his is a placement where carers support specific children by promoting shortterm care on a regular basis.
17 AUTUMN 2011 EDITION
Long term: This type of placement is for the child who is not able to return to their family for a long time. The child may be in care until the age of 18.

TODDLER - NO MORE NAPPIES
Poo smeared walls, exciting deposits behind the couch, accidents in the middle of shopping….. all the joys that toilet training brings, but the thrill of no more nappies is the definitely worth the effort.
Start Today! Let’s face it; toilet training is one of those things we are very happy to start tomorrow. The hardest challenge for parents is actually beginning. It is not for the faint hearted, we know this. It has been the procedure of many a parent to choose immediate “seek and destroy” of the soiled garment versus operation retrieval and clean-up. Whatever your method, you need to establish your game plan, arm yourself with the tools of the trade and just begin.
21 AUTUMN 2011 EDITION
Oh, Yeah! Praise, Praise, Praise. It is so important to begin toilet training with the right attitude. If you are not ready to give positive input into your child’s life, then hold off until you are. Build up not bring down is the key. Depending on how sensitive your child is, a displeased facial expression over an accident on the floor can be enough to set them back. Include – Go Team! Create ownership with your child where possible and include them on the journey with you. This is so important for better
understanding and acceptance. Take them shopping and let them choose their own underpants. They are more likely to keep them clean and dry. Oh, and this is a key part of the process that must be stressed – you CANNOT succeed, until you LOSE THE NAPPPY! Learn & Be Prepared Don’t expect the correct answer to the question “Do you need to go?”. How does your child know this? They have never done it before, you need to teach them. Knowing your child’s routine and getting them there at the right
TODDLER - NO MORE NAPPIES
times, eliminates hit and miss. The more successes you have, the quicker they can start identifying what their body is doing to start to let you know they need to go. Excitement – Have fun! Think like a child and your child will respond accordingly. Turn the process into a game. Refocus and make it fun. This is the best way to overcome the Poo Challenge or avoid refusal. Use the same principles you employ to eat vegetables, because you know they need them. Don’t give up, just get cleverer!
and using the right tools can make it even easier. Flushable urinals for boys are a great advantage to teaching standing in real time.
Familiarity – feeling comfortable with the big toilet can help when leaving the home with acceptance of public toilets, etc.
Tools of the Trade – Potty or Toilet? This is often a personal preference thing, but if your child is over two, it is often easier to head straight for the toilet. This is what you need to consider:
Once you are ready to use the toilet you will need an insert to make the hole smaller to prevent fall-ins. Consider the process though when making this purchase – every day use - adding and removing - for the next two years or more of your child’s life….plus the next child. If you can afford the units that have the child and adult seat in one, it is worth every cent for convenience and sanity. Plus, at every opportunity consider tools that create independence. The child that can take themselves, because it is easy to pull the child seat down rather than juggle an insert, makes a big difference.
Clean out – Kylie with twin boys started toilet training at 14mths, and decided the potty was not for her, because she couldn’t stand the thought of the daily cleanup involved.
Toilet – Let’s go! Show your child it is a normal, everyday thing (which it is of course) and they will in turn feel comfortable with using this new tool. Monkey see, monkey do is the best way to teach your child, so let them watch you go. Watching Daddy weeing standing up is the best way to teach a boy,
Transition – The potty is only temporary. If you have a child that doesn’t like change, then starting on the toilet may be the best option to avoid another change in routine later on.

EARLY CHILDHOOD - EARLY YEARS LEARNING FRAMEWORK
Your Childcare Service should have booklets, fact sheets and lots of knowledge they can share about the Framework – just ask them! A key part of the Framework consists of 3 simple words – Belonging, Being, Becoming. Now picture a Pyramid – section it into three layers. The biggest piece across the bottom is the strongest and forms the basis for the rest of our pyramid. That section is called “Belonging”. We all need to connect with and belong to something – our family, our culture, our community, our peer groups. This

Belonging is a firm anchor from which each person can grow and develop confidently and securely. The second level is “Being” – this is who and what we are here and now. This is us in our daily lives, living and interacting, learning and growing, it’s who we are Being. The final level, the apex of the pyramid is called “Becoming”. At all times we are identifying who we are. Our skills, capacities and knowledge constantly grows and changes; we are learning social behaviours, physical talents and maturing and developing our character and personality. The Belonging, Being, Becoming pyramid celebrates the wonderful journey of childhood and together with three other features of the Framework: Principles, Practices & Learning Outcomes, recognition is given to the major emphasis the early years of every person’s life has on their future success as an adult.

PLAYTIME FOR ALL ABILITIES a wheelie green future
A home recycling program is a great way to get the whole family involved in the recycling process. It provides a great opportunity to teach your kids about recycling and reusing. We want the planet to be a better place for future generations, but it is up to us to teach them how to keep it clean.
We can all be waste wise • Reduce the amount of waste we collect in our lives;
Take advantage of the sunshine and ne afternoons by taking the family to one of the new All Abilities Playgrounds in Mossman at George Davis Park (‘Bubu Kinkari’) or in Edmonton at the Sugarworld Botanic Gardens. These playgrounds have been designed to be used by children of all abilities and include a variety of exciting activities that encourage inclusive children’s play. Structures include a double ying fox, a wheel-chair accessible carousel, bamboo maze and balance beams, as well as a sensory space with outdoor musical instruments. There are also lovely sand and water areas and a barbeque picnic node for families. These playgrounds are funded by Council and the Department of Communities, through Disability Services as part of the Queensland Government’s popular All Abilities Playground Project – enabling participation in play.
• Reuse things we have collected so they are not wasted as quickly; • Recycle what we can; and • Dispose of what is left responsibly. Improvements have been made in Council’s recycling facility and additional items are now recyclable. Milk and juice cartons have been added to the list of recyclable waste which includes glass, plastics, steel and aluminium cans, newspapers, magazines and cardboard. For details on what you can and can’t place in your yellow-lidded recycling bin, visit Council’s website or collect a guide from Council’s Customer Service Centres or any branch of Cairns Libraries.
Playing in drains is a dangerous game Heavy downpours during the wet season can quickly send torrents of fast-owing water rushing down street drains. Children often see this as a chance to ‘ride the rapids’ but don’t realise the risks such as ash ooding and consequent drowning, poisonous gases, dangerous animals, drug users and broken bottles. Keep your children safe; don’t let them play in pipes or drains.

HEALTH AND FITNESS - GESTATIONAL DIABETES
What is diabetes? Diabetes is a condition that occurs when blood glucose (sugar) levels are raised and the body is not able to use it for energy as effectively as usual. This happens as a result of problems producing or processing the hormone insulin in the body. Insulin acts like a key allowing glucose to move from the blood stream into the body’s cells where it can be used by the body for energy. Lack of insulin or inability of insulin to work properly causes the doors to the cells to stay shut and consequently sugars in the blood rise to abnormally high and often dangerous levels.
Who is at risk? • Women over 30 years of age. • Women with a family history of Type 2 diabetes. • Women who are overweight. • Indigenous Australians and Torres Strait Islanders. • Certain ethnic groups including: Indian, Chinese, Polynesian, Vietnamese, Middle Eastern. • Women who have had gestational diabetes during previous pregnancies. • Women who have had difficulty carrying a pregnancy to term.
What is gestational diabetes? Gestational Diabetes occurs during pregnancy. In pregnancy, the placenta produces hormones that help the baby to grow and develop. These hormones also partly block insulin action, meaning the need for insulin in pregnancy is 2 or 3 times higher than normal. If the body is unable to produce this much insulin, gestational diabetes develops. From 3-8% of pregnant women will develop gestational diabetes around the 24th to 28th week of pregnancy. When the pregnancy is over and the insulin needs return to normal, the diabetes usually disappears.
How will diabetes affect my baby? The mother’s glucose crosses the placenta very easily into the baby’s bloodstream. If the levels are too high the baby will make large amounts of its own insulin as it tries to lower its blood glucose. These high insulin levels in the baby can: • Cause excessive growth and fat deposits • Cause low blood glucose levels after birth. • Can cause breathing problems in the baby
Treatment The best way to keep your blood sugar levels normal during pregnancy is for you to have the ongoing help and support of a team including your partner, doctor, diabetes educator, dietician and midwife. The 3 key components of your care involve: • A healthy eating pattern. • Exercise. • Monitoring of blood glucose levels.

HEALTH AND FITNESS - HOW TO PACK A HEALTHY LUNCHBOX
Packing a nutritious lunchbox will keep energy levels high and help improve your child’s concentration and ability to learn. To achieve a healthy balance for your child include: fresh fruit, vegetables and a combination of protein, dairy and carbohydrate foods.
container of mixed vegetables such as cherry tomatoes, carrot sticks, capsicum and cucumber and introduce a dip or Philly cheese. Another great way to improve our child’s vegetable intake is to sneak some salad onto sandwiches by grating carrot and lettuce or by mixing chopped meat with chutney or avocado.
Fruit – Although not always the most favourite part of the lunchbox it is an important part. If your kids won’t eat traditional fruit it might pay to be creative – instead of a whole apple try an “apple slinky” sprinkled with lemon juice or add fruit with a little more appeal like strawberries or grapes. Appeal to their sense of fun and make some simple mixed fruit mini skewers. Also try alternating fresh fruit with dried or packaged fruits, like sultanas or dried apricots or tinned pears and peaches. Dried fruit can be high in sugar so have this only occasionally. Also best left out of the lunchbox is dried fruit bars, straps or roll ups, these are high in sugar and low in fibre.
Protein – Kids need protein in their lunch to help them feel satisfied longer. The best options include low-fat dairy snacks, such as cheese sticks and slices, yoghurt pouches or milk poppers. In sandwiches try lean meats like chicken, turkey, ham or tuna or sliced hardboiled egg. Spreads like hommus, peanut butter or tzatziki also make good fillings or sandwich additions.
Vegetables – Kids love colour and child size portions so try preparing a variety of vegetable sticks or a small

sustain their energy levels throughout the afternoon. Include a mixed variety to keep their interest high. Try bread rolls, pita bread, flat bread, bagels or crispbreads. Fruit loaf, pikelets, scones or homemade muffins can also be good choices. Choose wholegrain varieties where possible but if they will eat nothing but white, choose a variety with added fibre. Snacks – I know it can be hard, but try to limit pre-packaged snacks in the school lunchbox as they are often packed with sugars and nutrition poor. Sticking to just one per day is ideal. The best snacks to choose are those that are high in fibre/ wholegrains and low in fat. Choose packaged snacks that are: less than 600kJ, have 3-5g of protein and have less than 10g sugar per 100g.

Companion E-newsletter winner to receive a figure over-haul. 12 weeks of one-on-one fitness coaching, nutrition and exercise plans with Cliff Kovacs from Peak Physique
Whether it’s getting back into the school routine, bed times, homework, sport or dealing with the overwhelming images of the Queensland Floods and cyclone ‘bad news’ stories, our kids minds are not only sponges for learning, but have all the hormonal and chemical responses to the way they live, eat, move, play and learn. This is occurring in their developing brain at a rapid speed, and patterns will start to set them up for the responses they will have for life… in work, relationships, eating, moving and playing. Children need 30-60 minutes of physical activity a day to help regulate their level of happy hormones (serotonin, endorphins, dopamine, and norepinephrine), which are secreted by the pituitary gland, the pea-sized master gland located deep within the base of the brain. Serotonin is released with mild, normal physical activity, like walking, riding, and playing, and gives us the sense of wellbeing that ‘we can do it’ and a nice sense of calm afterwards. Serotonin is released just by moving around because we are built to move. Normal functional movement gives us the oomph to ‘get up and go’ and to keep going. Endorphins are the ‘huff and puffers’, we often feel exhilarated, peaking and quite invincible after running around. Your kids will be hyped up after this and it naturally lowers the stress/worry chemicals like cortisol in the brain. Kids who don’t move enough can be depressed, worried and overwhelmed as cortisol builds up in the brain. It’s the happy hormones that regulate mood, appetite, sleep and general wellbeing, and kids who move 30 minutes a day or more naturally manage the stress chemicals and hormonal responses to life. Try these ‘happy hormone’ strategies: Move to boost happy hormones, 30 minutes every day – it doesn’t matter how - just move, walk, run, ride, scoot, dance, play, climb. Feed the happy hormones – only eat when you are hungry, and teach your kids about Red, Orange and Green Light foods. Low Glycaemic Index foods will also regulate insulin responses to meals, and kids’ energy levels will be more even, and they won’t be ‘starving’. Laugh to increase happy hormones- laughter increases heart rate and blood circulation, lowers stress hormones and raises the happy hormones. Focus on the Positive – look for the good in everything, and catch yourself when complaining as your children will naturally adopt your attitudes.

WHO’S THAT GIRL? Tanya and her husband were married in 2008. The Mayor will remember the special occasion as one of the key attendees, and this year with her youngest daughter starting high school, it’s great timing. Now there’s room for Tanya to focus on her self - well sort of, there is also a newborn to consider. The hardest challenge will be adding her strict exercise and new healthy eating plan to her already busy life. “I’m really looking forward to downgrading my wardrobe from size 18s to 14s, then I’ll set my sights on a half marathon. But to start off with I’m really looking forward to exercising again, with my own fitness coach”
THE PLAN Every four weeks we will have a measure in of both biceps, bust, hips, waist and both thighs. We will then compare the results every four weeks. Each week I will post the workouts that Tanya has mastered at www.yourpeak.com.au along with a few tips. Every four weeks in Parenting Companion’s e-newsletter we will have a catch up so everyone can see how Tanya is going.
OUR GOAL Size 14 or better. And for everyone at home hopefully a fitter, healthier and more motivated you. Cliff and Tanya For more information email cliff@bootcamp.com.au or visit www.yourpeak.com.au.
HEALTH AND FITNESS - PILATES
something for everybody!
MICK - 8 week beginners Pilates course (Back to Basics) How were you introduced to and what was the reason for starting Pilates?
exercises to do. Have you tried other types of strengthening exercises? If so what were they and how did they compare to Pilates?
You can participate in Pilates any time, even when an injury is present. You feel very balanced in the core and elongated and stronger after each session. This feeling stays with you after continued participation.
It was recommended by my physiotherapist as I was suffering from knee and low back pain and struggling with my posture.
I regularly go to the gym but I enjoy Pilates as it targets my core strength with less injury and strain. After decades of sporting activity, I wish I’d been introduced to Pilates earlier.
How long have you been practicing Pilates?
DIANE - Clinical Equipment Pilates class
During the 8 week course I spent 20mins each day practicing my class exercises that were progressed each week. By the end of the 8 weeks, I could see how much stronger I was and my back pain had also decreased, so after I finished the course I continued to practice independently for 20-40mins 3 times a week.
How were you introduced to and what was the reason for starting Pilates?
Having a Physiotherapist who understands what my physical status is at any point in time means that my programme can adapted accordingly. When I had severe low back pain, my programme was modified so I could continue to exercise. My back has improved so the exercises can now become more challenging again.
I’ve always been very active but after breast cancer surgery, I realised I needed a gentle and controlled way to return to exercise.
Have you tried other types of strengthening exercises? If so what were they and how did they compare to Pilates?
While visiting Melbourne, I was introduced by my daughter to a physiotherapy-based Pilates equipment class. I then waited anxiously for the same kind of class to be introduced in Cairns.
I participate in weight training, boxing, cardio, RPM, swimming, and regular walking and hill trekking.
What do you like about Pilates? In the Back to Basics courses, you receive handouts with each class which then makes up into a really useful course handbook by completion of the course. It allows easy reference to a whole host of

What do you like about Pilates?
What are the benefits of Pilates?
Since attending regular Physiotherapistled Pilates classes twice weekly since May 2010, my core has strengthened immeasurably.
HEALTH AND FITNESS - PILATES fiona - Anti-natal Pilates class How were you introduced to and what was the reason for starting Pilates? I started Pilates as one of my classes at my gym. When I got pregnant I decided to seek out a small class so I could be more monitored. What do you like about Pilates? I feel refreshed and relaxed after a class. Having a Physiotherapist who comes round to you throughout the class means they can make the exercise work that much better just by tweaking your position or technique a fraction. Also, being in a small class rather than with 30 other people means you can get individual attention. What benefits do you experience with Pilates? I feel calm and happy at the end of a class. I know I am working towards a goal of strengthening and balancing my body. I feel really confident doing Pilates while I’m pregnant and stretching relieves some aches and pains. I think about the instructions regarding posture and balance throughout the week not just in the class. Have you tried other types of strengthening exercises? If so what were they and how did they compare to Pilates? I have done a little weight training and pump classes. I find classes more interesting than weights in the gym.

I have also learnt that sometimes ‘less is more’. In gyms, they tend to push with ‘upping’ weights without focusing on positioning and accuracy. naomi - Postnatal Pilates class How were you introduced to and what was the reason for starting Pilates? I originally trained in Pilates when I was ballet dancing. After having two big babies my stomach muscles had separated and my pelvic floor muscles weren’t improving. I knew I had to start doing something about it. How long have you been practicing Pilates? I’ve just started the last couple of months. I’ve already seen significant improvements in my pelvic floor muscles and my inner stomach muscles- they have improved amazingly! I’ve also had fewer tension headaches since starting Pilates. Have you tried other types of strengthening exercises? If so what were they and how did they compare to Pilates?

HEALTH AND FITNESS - HEAD LICE
- Nick Loukas Pharmacist for V Pharmacy It is that time of year again, when back to school means welcoming new visitors into your home. Yes, the dreaded visit from the head lice family. Head lice are common in children and their families. Head lice are small insects that live on the scalp and lay eggs (nits) on the hair. Lice and nits cause an itchy scalp, although not every child gets the visible ‘scratch’, so regular checking of hair is vital. If your child has not been treated for head lice before, and you only find eggs, you should consider treating for head lice. However another option, if you do not want to use insecticidal treatments, is to check again the next day using the conditioner and comb technique. If your child has been treated recently, and you find only hatched eggs, but no lice, you may not need to treat since the eggs could be from the old infection. You should check your child every week using conditioner & a fine tooth comb. A female louse will lay between three to eight eggs (nits) per day in the hair, within 1.5cm of the scalp. These eggs resemble dandruff but cannot be brushed off. Head lice do not have wings or jumping legs so they cannot fly or jump from head to head. They can only crawl. People get head lice from direct head to head contact with another person who has head lice. Head lice live in the hair and come down to the scalp to feed by sucking blood. So head lice formulations must be applied to all parts of the hair. A complete regime consists of two treatments 7 days apart, the first to kill the climbers, and the second to kill the juvenile lice hatched from the eggs over the intervening 6 days. No currently available product kills all eggs. Many head lice products contain insecticides and most work by attacking the nervous system of the lice. All products licensed and registered with the Therapeutic Goods Administration in Australia have an Aust L or Aust R number. Check for this to see that the product is licensed for use in Australia. Be wary of head lice treatment products in Australia that are not officially approved. It’s important to follow the directions exactly because these products are insecticides. Applying too much medication or too frequently can increase the risk of causing harm. Following the directions on the product label is also important to ensure that the treatment works properly. If your child is 2 years old or under, you should not use medicated lice treatments without talking to your local pharmacist. At V Pharmacy, we can recommend a medicated shampoo, a cream rinse or a lotion to kill the lice. These may be over-the-counter (OTC) or prescription medications, depending on what treatments have already been tried. Medicated lice treatments usually kill the lice and nits, but it may take a few days for the itching to stop.

HEALTH AND FITNESS - ORAL HYGIENE
Children’s health and well-being are a primary concern to all parents. Children’s oral care and the maintenance of healthy teeth play a vital role in insuring a healthy childhood. When will my baby’s teeth develop?
How should I brush my child’s teeth?
There is no exact timeframe in which your baby’s teeth will develop. In general your baby’s front four teeth (two on the top and two on the bottom) are the first to appear,
usually between 6 – 12 months of age. Over the course of the next 2 years up
Use a pea size amount of children’s toothpaste
until the age of 3 years, a complete set of 20 primary or baby teeth should have appeared. Even though all 20 baby teeth will eventually fall out it is important to take
Use simple brushing technique such as small circular brushing motions

good care of these first teeth as they not only allow good function and aesthetics, they also hold the spaces for the permanent teeth and allow a straight eruption path. When should I take my child to the dentist? It is recommended that your child’s first dental visit should be timed when their full set of baby teeth have appeared. This is usually around 18 months to 2 years of age. This enables the dentist to check for early signs of problems, show you the right way to clean and care for your child’s teeth and is a good opportunity for you to ask any questions about the development of their teeth. It is important that your child’s first dental visit is pleasurable and fun, which will help to motivate and keep your child enthusiastic about caring for his or her teeth.
Choose a children’s toothbrush suitable for the age – not too big with soft bristles
Generally children under the age of ten years require help brushing their teeth, whether you are brushing their teeth or supervising.
So remember, starting early and starting right will ensure that your child will stay healthy, happy and have a right smile for many years to come.

ZOOLANDER BAZ
Dear Baz,
Dear Baz.
My 12-year old daughter has a gutter mouth. I’m worried that her exposure to the latest music film clips has de-sensitised her. What can I do to tidy up her language before she gets kicked out of school? From Lyn Jenson Owner of Sushi Express & mother of one Lyn the problem of our dear little treasures picking up the language most commonly used in the smoko room at a construction site is one that many parents go through. I know my parents had to go through it when I was a little tacker and have thankfully now passed on that burden to my wife. Now you say your daughter is 12 years of age, well my dear, you should be thankful that your little gutter mouth is a late bloomer. I think a short word of warning, from you to your daughter, simply explaining that if she doesn’t curb her language then you will be forced to wash her filthy, painter and docker, trollop, trash talking mouth out with wasabi. Also your concern over the listening/ watching of music that de-sensitizes our youth can also be fixed with the wasabi. Simply rub the wasabi into her sinfully peering eyes and clog up her repulsively respondent hearing ears. This will in turn cover her in the glory of the underlying message of all three monkeys. “Hear no Evil”, “See no Evil”, and “Speak no Evil”.
My youngest daughter won’t keep her shoes on. She would walk around barefoot all day if she could. What can I do to encourage her to put them on and keep them on? From Tyson Franklin - Proarch Podiatry.
This dilemma is as old as time itself. As far as man has come since inventing the wheel, we have not, to my knowledge, been able to overcome this age old problem. Having three (3) boys in my household, I’m not up to speed in dealing with things made of sugar and spice and all things nice, however the fact that this problem is not restricted to a single sex I can tell you I’m in a similar predicament with my two (2) year old. In Zoolander headquarters (my house) this problem is dealt with in the simplest of manners, utilising basic duct tape. By taping his footwear to his feet, the barefoot bandit can’t strike again. This solution sometimes has its drawbacks, namely if you put the tape on to tight. Of course having tape over the whole foot can also cause problems with loss of grip when walking in wet areas but at least if they end up in hospital due to a fall, the police won’t be called to investigate child abuse/neglect as they will be able to see that the child has footwear on. Regards Zoolander Baz.

EARLY CHILDHOOD - READY READING
I bet you can remember your favourite story when you were growing up? Stories help children to cope with a lot of their feelings and problems. Story time can be a special caring time, which they will remember all their lives.
Tips for story-tellers Whether you read or tell stories to your children you will be helping them in many ways.
You can get picture books that don’t have any words, so you can make up the story from the pictures for your children. Telling them or reading them from books, stories are one of the ways that children learn to enjoy reading.
Babies and toddlers Young babies enjoy the warmth of your company and the sound and rhythm of your voice, long before they can understand the words. Babies and toddlers can start to learn to enjoy books as you show them brightly coloured pictures and name the objects or sing a rhyme about the picture. They can understand the words that you say long before they can talk. Stories need to be simple and short because toddlers have short attention spans. Two-year-olds will often correct you if you leave out a word or will enjoy saying some of the words as they get to know their loved stories.
Ask your children to tell you a story — and listen to them. Show them you are interested. Find books that you can start and finish in the reading time.
Take your children to the library and let them select some books to read from the section for their age. They may not like them all, but they will probably like some and they are learning to use a library. Ask about borrowing tapes, CDs and DVDs.
Letting your children choose some of the books to borrow (and choose the stories you tell) will help them to learn that they are a partner in the reading time. School age children Don’t make story time a reading lesson — it is a time for sharing, relaxing and fun. Don’t expect too much too soon when your children are learning to read stories for themselves. It is special to have stories read to you at any age.
Help children find books about their interests. Beginning book-readers need books with simple words for success and enjoyment. Books that are too hard can put them off.
All children are different. Your children might not enjoy the same books or be at the same reading level as other children of the same age or do what their older siblings did at the same age.
Don’t worry if your children like comics as they get older — it is all part of reading. Once they are confident readers they are likely to want to move on to reading different things.
Many children (and adults) like to return to old favourites from time to time, even when they can read much more difficult stories. This could happen especially if they are unwell or unhappy.
Children aged 3–school age Let your children choose their favourite books or stories. You and your children can act out stories. Children can make pictures or models of stories.

PRE POLLUTED BABIES
What do we need to do to have our babies flourish in a toxic world?
Dr Sarah Lantz (PhD) is a research fellow at the University of Queensland, mother, author of the bestselling book Chemical Free Kids: Raising Healthy Children in a Toxic World and all round chemical conscious parenting nut. What do I do for a living? I work in research. In projects where we slice and dice placentas and umbilical cords and examine the chemical compounds in them. Things that we have found include waste by-products such as pollution from incinerators, dioxin, Teflon, PCBs, formaldehyde, heavy metals including lead, methylmercury and cadmium. Consumer products: sulphates, parabens, phthalates, fragrances, artificial musks, brominated flameretardants, preservatives, triclosan, bisphenol-A (BPA). And probably the most disturbing of all are the industrial chemicals banned over 30 years ago. Organophosphates (pesticides) make up the bulk of these chemicals. The evidence of health impacts from these synthetic chemicals continues to grow. Many can be traced directly to the illnesses that our babies and children are now experiencing, including immune diseases, asthma, allergies, and cancers, higher rates of learning and behavioural difficulties and intellectual impairment. Research also reveals that toxic chemicals are associated with a host of reproductive problems: birth defects, altered sexual maturation, low birth weight, delayed growth, developmental delay, decreased coordination, fetotoxicity (including miscarriage, spontaneous abortion, stillbirth) pre-term delivery, reduced fertility—in both men and women – and infertility.
industry, including the personal care, cosmetic and food industry, has always taken the position that there is no reason to hold up production of ‘useful’ products if no danger has been proven. Of course, we assume that companies consider health before wealth, and that those manufacturing, marketing and regulating the products we buy and consume would not approve products that compromise our health. But consider that when we use the most popular consumer products on the shelves – wipes, nappies, bubble bath, shampoo, cleansers, toothpaste – we create toxic babies, children and teenagers. Consider also that every time you hold your child, they inhale the chemicals in your moisturiser, foundation and perfume. Consider that when you kiss your child, they are potentially ingesting the phthalates in your lipstick. Consider that many of these toxic chemicals in your cosmetics are passed on to your baby through your breast milk and via the placenta when your baby is growing inutero and at its most vulnerable. (Babies do not have a blood brain barrier while in the womb or detoxifying enzymes).
Dr Sarah Lantz’s Bestselling Book Chemical Free Kids
Who decides what’s safe for our children? These days, most chemicals produced and released onto the market have had no safety testing to determine their health impacts. Current regulations do not require manufacturers of commercial chemicals to supply any toxicity data before selling their products. This means that over half of the chemicals produced for human consumption have never been tested for toxicity of the human body (EWG, 2001). At the heart of this legislation is the principle which allows for a certain amount of acceptable risk. And with this knowledge,
• Reduce toxic exposure and avoid products that contain harmful ingredients; • Withdraw consent from companies that produce toxic products; • Purchase ethical, organic, natural products; • Look for products that are certified organic to food standards (and have the certified organic logo). Personal care and cosmetics should be as pure as the foods we eat. • Read labels – marketing claims are limited by the law, and can mean anything or nothing at all; • Also, familiarise yourself with a good chemical database such as: • Environmental Working Group’s Skin Deep Database: - www.cosmeticsdatabase.com • Miessence Chemical Ingredients Directory - www.healthylife.mionegroup.com/toxic • The Chemical Maze www.possibility.com

embracing potential
Hi there, My name is Ellie Parrington . We moved to Cairns not long ago for work, so I know no-one here. Due to the nature of hubby’s work, I’ve found it hard to have any time out. I’m trying hard to stay healthy and active with my family (I’’ve lost the 15 kilos I gained in pregnancy with Baby #2), but you know, life’s busy... Who has much time for themselves? I have a permanent tension headache from pulling my hair back in a pony-tail every single day! I would love to be treated to a makeover and some pampering - It sounds so decadent, and so far removed from my every day reality.
Ellie with her boys
Sincerely, Ellie Parrington
"Creative Stylist Belinda from Reds Salon and Spa I chose vibrant copper tones to compliment Ellies skin tone. With the cut I wanted something edgier so I took it quite short at the back with an undercut bringing it to an asymmetrical bob at the front. The makeup was kept simple to compliment Ellies beautiful blue eyes. “Thank you Reds & Cns Parenting Companion! My boys (who are both red-heads) were quite chuffed - My 3 yr old told me we were twins now, and my 2 yr old just kept stroking my hair and saying, ‘Nice’. Hubby also loved it and we even managed to have a lovely dinner out.” Would you like a mummy makeover? Let us know why you need a makeover by emailing win@parentingcompanion.com.au

Hey! Snap out of it! Your philosophical pondering has eaten up the rest of your precious second. Already her left eyebrow is beginning to quiver. Times up! But don’t panic. Here’s a technique that’ll buy you a little more time. Just lock eyes and say, with total conviction; “Babe” (or your preferred endearment) “your bum actually makes those shorts look great”. Temporary confusion. You now have an extra 1.5 seconds to run, change the subject or wait for the next question, which is usually: “what do you mean by that”? And let’s be honest. We don’t know the answer to that question either. So what happens next? Maybe the bomb goes off. Maybe you both laugh it off. Or maybe you’re learning to live without a spleen. WAHP - CREATE A GREAT FIRST IMPRESSION
A common problem for stay at home mums looking to resume their careers outside the home, is to demonstrate their capacity to effectively fulfil their roles and responsibilities in the workplace – in other words – do the job!
Writing a résumé is always a daunting task and for individuals with long (or even short) absences from the workforce, a confusing one. How do you effectively demonstrate and highlight all of your skills and abilities, whilst assuring your prospective employers that you are the right person for the job, regardless of your time away? The good news about modern résumés is that they can take any number of forms, dependent on the needs of the individual concerned. Gone are the days of the standard ‘name, address, date of birth, marital status’ introduction. Now, ‘Professional Profile’ and ‘Key Areas of Competencies’ sections are typically used as ways to showcase your skills, abilities and knowledge. Whilst including your career path is important (and expected by most employers), it does not have to be the major focus of your résumé. Moving this section to the last page or two gives employers the opportunity to find out what you can offer them, before they make any judgements about your time out of the workforce.
Also, highlight your abilities and talents by producing a ‘skills based résumé’. Essentially, this requires detailing your skills within the particular areas being targeted by your employer (customer service, accounts payable etc). Position descriptions provide heaps of hints about what each employer is looking for. Which leads to a vital point. The purpose of a résumé and letter of application is to introduce yourself to a prospective employer in such a way that they will want to meet you and, hopefully, hire you. It is therefore important that résumés and cover letters are targeted to each individual position. Yes, this takes time, however, your prospective employer will appreciate the fact that you took the time to research the position and the company.
Successful Résumés Cairns offers a specialist resume creation service. To have your ‘return to work résumé’ professionally written to highlight your skills and abilities, call Elisa on email

Menu Plan Do up a list of the meals you want to make for each day throughout the week - use up things in the Pantry and the Fridge Shopping List Put a Shopping List on the Fridge Door and write it down as you go. When you go shopping, if it’s not on the list then you don’t need it or already have it. Invest in a Deep Freezer Handy for back-ups and frozen vegies. Also freeze things like grated cheese, bananas (great for smoothies instead of using ice), herbs and bread.
Fuel Fill up your car the day after payday, this way you know you have the money and the car is always full. Also avoiding the “no fuel, no money and the kids in the car” scenario. Use Direct Debit Allocate a small amount of money to each of your utilities, electricity, rates etc... so when the bill arrives it won’t be so shocking. Use Enjo (Non-chemical cleaning cloths) This product is expensive in the beginning but when you don’t have to keep purchasing the chemicals you will get your money’s worth. Plants Ask your friends for cuttings from their gardens or share veggie gardens. Keep the bar fridge stocked up Join a wine club so the wine-rack is stocked and there’re no last minute expensive buys. Look for specials on beers and stock up when on sale.

Enough is enough. In this age of consumption, the cost of repairing a Plasma TV is comparable to a new one. No sooner is the iPhone released then we greet its 4th Cousin... No sooner do we master the controls of the XBox 360 then Microsoft take away the controls and we control it with our bodies. Soon bodies will be obsolete and next? Windows Mind point Zero?! I imagine a world driven purely by our thoughts? I am not a technophobe... I am quite the opposite, however, over time I have come to witness a disturbing trend and realise that it is important to balance the growth of consumption with a supply of sensibility. To many who think it is a "Financial Advisers" objective to prey on the ‘pursuit of consumption’ I implore that not all
advisers are created equal. This particular adviser recently found value in the intangible. I spent a morning sitting on the beach, enjoying the sun and the serenity. I say “enjoying” as though it was my choice but I will admit, I was dragged – begrudgingly. The first 15 minutes was filled with irritability and the restlessness of an unsettled mind - racing to think through the things I ought to be worried about. My mind was a muddled confusion of anxiety which dissipated only under the duress of time. No other force in my existence had compelled me to confront myself or to challenge my own

THE CONFESSION BOX
“Fess up and get it off your chest!”
I confess . . . I am turning into my mother. Yes, it’s not something I’ll readily admit too but the evidence is mounting and there’s no denying it. I’m not talking in the looks department, although I do get the occasional, “You look so much like your mother!” The moment it hit me was on one of her regular but short visits to Cairns. They always have to be short visits. Our time spent under the one roof needs heavy supervision with a 2 night maximum. We know exactly what buttons to push so any extended period of time together usually ends up in a screaming match or some heavy sulking. Anyway, this particular visit was probably the first time my husband had experienced a mother/ daughter sleepover. He’d already worked out some of our similarities, like our aversion to house-work, and our really terrible story telling ability. But it wasn’t until we both walked out in exactly the same nightie that he, and I, realised my mother had left her indelible mark on me. So the “passion killer” was binned fairly promptly after that and was never referred to again. My mother has for many years got my husband’s name mixed up with my ex’s. She confuses me with my two sisters and I even think the dog’s names been thrown into the mix too. Well now, I’m starting to notice that I do the roll call before I find the right name to call my children. And then there’s the way we both tend to hoard our perishable food. I know it’s off and should be thrown away but usually it’s not until a family member tries to
eat it or notices some unusual colours starting to form, that the matter is dealt with. It’s a well-known rule amongst my family that you enter my mother’s fridge at your own peril. And definitely do not try the cheese! Yep, I’m just going to give in and let nature run its course. But if I start doing crosswords, wanting to have long conversations about the weather and looking at funeral notices then I know, there’s no turning back! Anonymous
I confess . . . I really understood the lady in the last issue who confessed that she felt resentful. I feel that way too. You know how people say actions speak louder than words? My husband says “your job is the most important of all because you raise the kids.” Well, his actions do not portray that! He controls all of the money except what he gives me, and when he has had a bad day he reminds me that the world revolves around money so whoever makes money is in control. I know in his heart of heart he believes what I do is a very important job, but his male ego somehow will not really give “me” the credit. I don’t want for anything and neither do my 2 kids but I am on a budget that he controls. It is time as well, he believes when I go out for a few hours, he is doing me a favour. Of course when he goes out to do shopping or whatever, it is to him, “my job” to have the children. I love my husband but I wish he
could see that this is not really fair! Especially because I do all the night time feeds, sicknesses with the kids, meals, bedtimes, etc. Some men do not understand that if we felt more appreciated we would be happier, and happier means more ‘sex’, to me anyway! Hopefully I can get my husband to read this by ‘anonymous’ and it might click. I live in hope. Take care, hang in there, Anonymous
I confess . .. I taught my 3 yr old how to turn the TV on and change the channel to ABC2 so that I can get a sleep-in after a long night up with his baby brother Anonymous
I confess . . . I wanted to slap my obstetrician when I heard him tell me that I fall into the category of a ‘geriatric pregnancy’. Geriatric!!!! What does that mean? Should I be pushing a walking frame rather than a pram? What a pathetic term to use for pregnant mothers over the age of 35 years. Find a new one! Anonymous
