Local parents share their favourite tips for making life just that little bit easier.
Top Tips Congratulations to the Renton and Morrissey Families for winning family passes to see Elmo’s World Tour.
Encouraging Bath Time Getting my 2 and 3 year-old to co-operate at bath time can be a little testing at times. So I introduced coloured food dye! When it is bath time, they get to choose a colour to add to the bath to change the water from clear to red, yellow or blue. Some nights we even start with yellow and then add red to change to orange. This has encouraged my little ones to learn their primary colours (red, yellow, blue) and also what two colours go together to make secondary colours (orange, purple, green). It has also shown them how to share, as each boy gets to choose a colour on different nights. Natalie Renton
Decreasing High Temps When young children have constant high temperatures and you don’t want to abuse the use of Panadol, just put a pair of wet socks on their feet for half an hour and watch their temperature drop. Samantha Brohman
Reward Chart I draw up a sheet of 3 to 4 weeks. The kids receive a sticker each day if they do things like tidy their room, good listening and doing what they are asked etc. When they have filled each week they then receive a reward, like a small toy, book or sometimes if there is a movie or show they want to see, I tell them they need to fill the whole sheet - it seems to help with their behaviour :) Cassandra Morrissey
Weekly Family Day! We have a big calendar displayed on our pantry door. With one special family fun event marked once each week of the month. It gives my children something to ‘be good’ and look forward to as the fun day approaches. Renae Walsh
Quick Clean Up When its time to pack up, I put on some dancing music and have big coloured tubs that are labelled, the kids then race around cleaning up. I have also stuck pictures of the toys on the tubs so even the little ones know where things belong. Instead of music, you can also use a timer as some children like to race before it rings. The tubs look neat and tidy and we have less chance to lose toys as well. Severine Riddell

On the morning of my baby shower, 5 weeks before my little boy was due to make his appearance, I woke at 6:30am feeling like I needed to go to the bathroom. By the time I had made it across our new carpet (my husband Nick had made it clear that I was not to go into labour over the new carpet) and onto the tiles there was something running down my leg. My little boy was in a big hurry to meet us and there was no stopping him. Thirty minutes of pushing and Caleb Anthony was born at 10:01am. After a quick hold he was rushed outside to be checked over by the doctor and was brought back into me a few minutes later all wrapped up in towels to keep warm. I was told I could have a quick cuddle before he need to go to the Special Care Baby Unit (SCBU) to be looked over properly.

When it comes to getting babies to sleep, Australian parents are struggling A 2010 survey (Pampers Nappies Golden Sleep Survey) revealed that Australian children are the most sleep-deprived in the western world. ‘The Gift of Sleep: the 3-day program that teaches your baby to sleep’ harnesses the wisdom of popular Sydney ‘baby whisperer’ Elizabeth Sloane who has transferred her renowned 3-day sleep school program into an easy to follow guide. Using ‘controlled comforting’ techniques, the book aims to show parents how to teach their children to self-settle rather than relying on ‘props’ like dummies and rocking to get to sleep. Breastfeeding
Myths
Myth: Breast size affects how much milk you produce. I myself am a rather large breasted woman and had low supply issues with all my three children. Breast size has nothing to do with breastfeeding success; feeding success is largely dependent on the frequency of feeding, correct
Working as a trained, Volunteer Breastfeeding Counsellor with the Australian Breastfeeding Association (ABA), I am constantly hearing myths and old wives tales surrounding breastfeeding. Most can be quite funny, but others just sound painful! Here are a few of the most common breastfeeding myths our counsellors hear.
attachment and support from family and friends. Myth/Old wives tale: Scrubbing your nipples with a toothbrush or scourer can help prepare your nipples for breastfeeding. Ouch ... Just OUCH! How can something this abrasive compare to the softness of a newborns mouth? Using a toothbrush or scourer in this manner can remove the protective substances produced by the breast during pregnancy. You do not need to do anything to prepare your nipples for breastfeeding – It is however best practice to avoid soaps and creams on the nipples, it is also important to be fitted with a good breastfeeding bra. Myth: If you go too long without feeding, the milk will “go off” in your breasts. Ok, so on some level I guess this could be a reasonable assumption. Milk in the breast isn’t like having milk in a container on the bench; our amazing bodies have the ability to keep the breast milk in perfect condition and temperature at all times. Myth: If you breastfeed your baby for too long you will “spoil” them and create a clingy needy child. Babies’ first attachments with other human beings set the tone for all their future relationships in life. By responding to their needs quickly, consistently and with love, we teach them that the world is a safe and wonderful place. This gives them the courage to go out and explore, they know that they have a safe and loving place to return to. So in short, breastfeeding your baby for any length of time will not create a “clingy, needy child”. Myth: Breast milk has no nutritional benefit past 4, 6 or 12 months of age. Breast milk changes to meet the needs of a child. It continues to produce excellent nutrition, immune and other health and emotional benefits for as long as a child continues to breastfeed. For instance, even after 12 months of age babies continue to benefit from human milk. At one year a baby’s immune system is functioning at only 60 percent of adult level, because formula has no live antibodies it is strongly

Don’t worry mum, we’ve got your back! associated with high rates of infection. A child’s immune system doesn’t reach adult level until age six. The World Health Organization (WHO) recommends nursing for a minimum of two years. The United Nations Children’s Fund (UNICEF) also advises nursing for a minimum of two years. Myth: Breastfeeding comes naturally and should be easy. It is important for all mothers to realise that breastfeeding is a learned skill. It is rare for a mother to be able to feed successfully for the first time with no guidance or support. Many mothers contemplate weaning in the first few weeks due to the difficulties of first time feeding. Talking to a counsellor from the Australian Breastfeeding Association provides new mothers and their partners the reassurance and correct information needed to solve common feeding problems. The trained counsellors also provide the support and guidance a mother may need to continue breastfeeding. The Australian Breastfeeding Association provides a 24-hour helpline for any questions, queries or concerns in relation to all things breastfeeding

(1800 mum2mum). Myth: A mother must drink milk to make milk. Ok, so let me get this right, in order for us women to produce milk we must drink milk that is designed for a calf? No other mammal drinks milk to make milk, so why should we? A mother should eat a wide variety of healthy foods for her own health and wellbeing, but her diet has very little, if any, affect on milk supply. And finally, the funniest myth I’ve heard: Myth: Jogging or brisk walking will make your milk curdle and go sour. This is almost as bad as the theory that if you eat lots of chocolate and then jump up and down, you’ll make chocolate milk! At the Cairns group of the Australian Breastfeeding Association, we debunk old and new myths about breastfeeding. Our trained breastfeeding counsellors support and assist local mothers in breastfeeding their babies. All mothers are welcome at our breastfeeding support groups; we meet regularly at Yorkeys Knob and Hambledon House. ow more than ever, the face of the average Australian family is changing. With single parents and step families on the rise, the idea of the ‘average’ family is fading away.
In fact, the changes have been so significant some experts belief the standard nuclear family is fast becoming a thing of the past. A report published by the Australian Institute of Family Studies (AIFS) gives a snapshot of Australian families. It found the percentage of families made up of a couple and children had slid from almost 50 per cent in 1976 to less than 40 per cent by 2001. Its author Professor David de Vaus the traditional family of mum, dad and the kids, they represent just under 40 per cent of all families. However he maintains “mum, dad and the kids” is still the most dominant way to raise a child. The AIFS study also found an increase in the proportions of couple only families and one parent families with dependent children from 1976 to 2006. In 2006-07, couple families with no children were the most common type of family at 40%, followed by couple families with dependent children at 37%. This was
the reverse of the situation in 1997 where couple families with dependent children were the most common at 40%, followed by couple families with no children 35%. The increase in the proportion of couples living without children partly reflects the ageing of the population as baby boomers move into the ‘empty nester’ phase of their lives.
the Christmas break for any number of reasons. “Usually financial stress increases as the bills come in from Christmas expenditure and budgets become limited due to school expense requirements,” Naomi says. “As the year progresses it pays for adults to be aware of the general environment in your home as children do sense when parents are stressed.”
Naomi Wilson is the director of Spectrum Counselling and provides personal and professional development as well as counselling services. In her work she deals with every day step families. She took time out of her busy schedule to talk to Parenting Companion on the topic.
Naomi believes relationship difficulties within families can be even more real in a stepfamily environment. “It is vital stepfamily members know and understand they will encounter issues on top of those experienced in regular families. There are different beliefs and values, heritages, backgrounds, and other family members including grandparents, aunts, uncles, and cousins, ex partners and their extended families. “Each relationship will impact differently on different members.”
“A step family is defined as one where at least one partner has one child from a previous relationship,” Naomi says. “They are different from other families in many ways… according to Margaret Newman from the Jansen Newman Institute in Sydney, the simplistic notion that a step family is like a first-time family has trapped countless adults and children who often face, for the second time, disintegration of their world and dreams when they do not address the many unique and complex challenges that can be present. “A lot of families become stressed after
On the positive side Naomi says step families can provide adults with the chance to teach children how to cope with changes and explore how they deal with certain issues like discipline, finances and every day household arrangements.”
So what is it like to be a step or single parent in 2012? ...

blended family is a big and busy one. While Grant’s children have flown the coop, they share their house with Heather’s younger children, Harry, 10 and Makayla, 8. They say their connection was “instant.” “We were both fairly newly separated when we met… in a very short space of time we became good friends,” Heather says. “We understood each other’s situation at the time and our relationship grew…we could just talk for hours on end.
The couple say the best thing about being a blended family it the fun factor. “We always have a great time together,” Grant says. “We take out our boat out to the reef, go fishing, swimming and play cricket on the beach. The couples advice to other blended families is to give the children time to “adjust”. “Don’t force the children into it,” Heather says. “Provide a safe, loving and caring home environment for them as a platform they know they can always rely and fall back on. “No matter what their age let them know if any situation arises they can always rely on your home base for support.“ Both Grant and Heather say they have benefited from Relationships Australia.

single da d Ian As a single Dad to six-year-old Isabella and two-year-old Olivia, Ian describes his “busy” life as “wonderful”. “I love watching the girls grow and I feel like they are going to do great things in their lives,” he says. “Olivia is my gorgeous two year old doll with curly blond hair and big blue eyes and Isabella is my very busy six year old girl.” But with a full-time business to run he concedes their life is not without its challenges. Olivia has a very rare chromosome disorder that has given her some unique developmental challenges. She cannot walk or talk yet and her condition means regular medical, physio and speech therapy appointments. Despite this Ian says Olivia is the “happiest most content little girl he has even known.” “Her huge smile is always there, she brightens up my day from the moment she wakes,” he says.
“She has the ability to calm her sister down and I can see the bond between them growing every day. I know she may not be perfect physically and mentally, but I take comfort in knowing she is a very happy and generally healthy little girl. What more could a parent ask for really?”

I worry how they will go over time with no mother around and I probably over compensate. Maybe I’m guilty of being a bit soft some days but I don’t believe too much love will spoil them. in every aspect of their lives,” he says. “My babies are my pride and joy and most certainly not my baggage. The joy they bring cannot be measured.” But for Ian the family responsibilities are 24/7. “I have to be organised for the baby nappies, washing, cleaning, playing, have a moment to myself and swear I have baby brain some days.” Ian’s advice to Dad’s out there is simple. “Enjoy your children…they are more fun than the office and some of the things they say and do are hilarious.” There are a variety of support networks online for single fathers including www.dadsflyingsolo.com, www.loneparentfamilysupport.com.au.
Naomi’s top tips for a happy household: • Don’t force togetherness • Recognise a child’s identity can change with the new family structure • Treat all children equally • Recognise and understand different families of origin

Cairns Parenting Companion Winter 2012
• The biological parents should discipline their own child • Children need time alone with their biological parent. • Move into a new and neutral home if possible. • Do not be afraid to seek help if things get really difficult and stress levels escalate too much.

single mu m Anita Single mum of one Anita has raised daughter Naiya on her own since she was just five months old. She believes her solo role has both good and bad points. “I enjoy the fact that I have total control over how I want to raise Naiya,” she says. “Being a single parent means I make the decisions and I don’t have to compromise. I get to decide how Naiya is disciplined and for what reason which is definitely a good point for me.” Anita sees the lack of adult support and companionship as the most prominent bad point. “I don’t have the advantage of being backed up by the other parent, or having someone to step in and take over when I am exhausted. I think sometimes I let things slide so that I am not always on Naiya’s back and I get to have a bit of a break.” Anita’s parents make up her the bulk of her support network together with friends and other family members. “They have all played a major role in her upbringing, even when we are living outside of Cairns. It is such a luxury to have five willing and able, reliable people to entrust my daughter’s life upon without any concerns for her safety or well-being.”
healthy, well adjusted child I could see,” she says. “I think it is a natural feeling for a mother to experience guilt.” Anita says she got enormous benefits from a parent information session at the Westcourt Community Health Centre. “Being in a room full of parents who felt the same way helped me gain some confidence. The Community Health Centres are invaluable for the services they offer whether they are educational, supportive or clinical.” She believes a stable routine is vital for other single mums.“Develop a routine that works for everybody and stick to it,” she says. Also find other single parents to socialise with…pick your battles and get cranky with the serious things. And finally, one that I am still learning, don’t be afraid to ask for help…there really is so much available.”

Induction WORDS Helen Sweeney, Midwife for Appletree Medical Smithfield

WHAT DOES INDUCTION OF LABOUR (IOL) MEAN?
up to an hour. Often you may need more
Induction is a medically managed process, by which labour is stimulated to begin artificially. The process is an invasive procedure, and the medications and procedures associated with induction can cause a number of minor side effects and has a potential risk to both mum and baby.
every 6 to 8 hours).
HOW IS LABOUR INDUCED? There are a number of methods that can be used, all of which have associated potential risks mainly fetal distress and an increased risk of caesarean section. There is a plethora of ‘old wives tales’, they are generally not considered as ‘traditional medical methods’, but they are worthwhile researching. Before starting an induction either your doctor or midwife will assess the cervix by performing a vaginal examination. This should only take a few minutes, but for many women it can be an uncomfortable experience. Based on this examination one of the following methods of induction will be used.
In the majority of pregnancies, labour will start naturally between 37 and 42 weeks. When labour starts a number of changes take place: • The cervix softens, shortens and dilates • The fluid in the amniotic sac may break • The uterus contracts.
20
Cairns Parenting Companion Winter 2012
than one dose for it to be effective (given The prostaglandin should soften and open up the cervix in preparation for labour. What happens next will vary from woman to woman. Some women may begin to contract; others may need to have their waters broken, some may require oxytocins to start contractions. ARTIFICIALLY RUPTURING THE MEMBRANES (ARM) If the waters have not broken this may be recommended to start contractions. The midwife or doctor makes a hole in the membrane sac to release the fluid inside. This procedure is done via an internal examination using a long plastic instrument which has a small hook at its end. Sometimes the waters breaking will be enough to start contractions, but many women will require further intervention for contractions to start. SYNTHETIC OXYTOCIN Oxytocin is the hormone that causes contractions. A synthetic version of

rate of which is adjusted until contractions
PROSTAGLANDIN Prostaglandin is a naturally occurring hormone that prepares the body for labour. A synthetic version has been developed to mimic the effect of the hormone. This is inserted in to the vagina, either in the form of a gel or a pessary. After it is inserted you will be expected to lie down and have the baby’s heart beat monitored on a machine, this monitoring may last for
occur regularly. Continuous monitoring of the baby’s heart rate is required via a machine, which in turn will significantly limit mobility to only standing up or sitting down.
WHEN IS INDUCTION RECOMMENDED? There are a number of valid medical indications in which induction may be necessary.
• Any acute or chronic condition, such as pre -eclampsia or kidney disease that threatens maternal or fetal well being. • Women with prelabour rupture of membranes > 24 hours of duration at or over 37 weeks • Severe fetal growth restriction with confirmed fetal compromise • Diabetes • Blood group incompatibility • Proven placental insufficiency • Post dates.
WHAT ARE THE RISKS OF INDUCTION? There are definitive benefits in situations where there is a significant compromise in the health of mother and or baby, however induction should only be offered if the risks of prolonging the pregnancy are considered more serious than the risks of delivering the baby straight the way. INCREASED Risks include: • Abnormal fetal heart rate • Use of epidural for pain relief, resulting in potential complications • Forceps and vacuum deliveries • Emergency caesarean sections • The baby being admitted to neonatal intensive care unit. Currently Australia has induction rates at 25%, with a significantly growing number of babies being induced for social or non-medical reasons. Induction can sound extremely enticing when you feel tired and uncomfortable, you appear to be having a ‘big baby’ or your known obstetrician is going away on holiday. There is however growing evidence that inducing labour for reasons of convenience over necessity increases the likelihood of having a caesarean section.
PROLONGED PREGNANCY OR POST DATES Post dates are a political minefield, with each caregiver and hospital having their own definition; general consensus is 7 to 12 days past the due date. Essentially the main potential risk associated with waiting for labour to start spontaneously after 41 weeks is the death of the baby. Recent research even suggests induction around your due date, if you are 40 years old or over, to reduce peri natal death. Women need to be given adequate information about the risks involved with either waiting or inducing in order for them to make the right choice for them. There is no risk free option; however the risk of peri natal death is extremely small (approx 0.5%) for either options.
INFORMATION AND DECISION-MAKING Health care professionals have a responsibility to explain the following points to women being offered an induction. Women also need to ask appropriate questions. • The reasons induction is being offered • The arrangements for support and pain relief (recognising that women are more likely to find induced labour more painful than spontaneous labour) • The alternative options if the woman chooses not to have the induction • The potential risks and benefits of induction and the proposed method • What happens if induction is not successful? • The potential risks with continuing the pregnancy • Offer support to women in their choices.

Lactose INTOLERANCE
and
Milk Protein ALLERGIES WORDS
Lactose intolerance, milk protein allergy, cow’s milk allergy and dairy allergy are all very different conditions. Lactose is the sugar in all mammals’ milk, including human milk. About 7% of breast milk consists of lactose, which all up provides about 40% of a baby’s energy needs.
Julie Littlefield – Private Lactation Consultant
It helps them absorb calcium and iron, as well as helps ensure healthy development. Lactase is the enzyme that digests lactose; lactase is produced in the very tips of the lining of the intestine. Lactose intolerance is often misunderstood and misdiagnosed.
THERE ARE 2 TYPES OF LACTOSE INTOLERANCE: Primary (or true) Lactose Intolerance This is an extremely rare genetic condition, where the baby is born with no lactase production. It is a medical emergency and unless a special formula food is given the baby won’t survive.
Secondary Lactose Intolerance This is a lot more common and is only a temporary condition lasting about 4-8 weeks in babies. This occurs when the intestine lining is damaged, which either prevents or reduces production of lactase. When there isn’t enough lactase to
22
Cairns Parenting Companion Winter 2012
digest lactose normally, it is broken down by bacteria leading to fermentation, which produces gasses causing pain, bloating, wind and frothy green stools in babies. Vomiting is not a symptom of lactose intolerance. As the intestine heals lactase production returns to normal and the symptoms should clear. If you are concerned at all about your child’s health, a medical assessment should always be the first call. There are other medical conditions with similar symptoms. Always seek professional advice before changing your baby’s regular milk. Human
milk remains the best food and will assist with gut healing. If a baby is lactose intolerant the medical tests would show positive, but they do also show positive for most breastfed babies less than three months! Lactose overload can mimic the signs of lactose intolerance and is frequently mistaken for it. This can occur when a mother has oversupply of milk, when baby doesn’t empty the first breast completely before switching, when feeds are timed or from comfort feeding/ overfeeding. Seeking advice from a lactation consultant can help you resolve these individual issues.
Paradise Palms... MILK PROTEIN ALLERGY An allergy to the protein in cows’ milk is the most common food allergy during infancy. The good news is that children usually grow out of it by 3-4 years-of-age. Allergic disease is multifactorial, with incidence related to family history, sensitization and triggers. Family history has the best predictive value for identifying children at risk, who should be targeted for allergy prevention. Symptoms don’t usually accompany first exposure, which can be as early as the 22nd week of pregnancy. Reliable diagnosis is important. With immediate (minutes, up to an hour) reactions diagnosis is usually obvious. This can be confirmed by your doctor using allergy tests. Symptoms can include, skin rash, vomiting, noisy breathing, facial swelling and floppiness. Delayed symptoms diagnosis is not as obvious; treatment involves avoidance of dairy products. Confirmation of diagnosis usually involves referral to a medical specialist. Symptoms can include vomiting and diarrhoea, eczema, asthma. When a child’s symptoms suggest an allergy when breastfeeding, a maternal elimination diet may be suggested. When the offending food is eliminated, symptoms should improve in 48-72 hours. Only microscopic amounts of an allergen are needed to trigger a sensitization or symptoms. There is a long list of possible symptoms caused by food allergy. Food allergy is only one possible cause for many symptoms.

Remember, most children don’t suffer from food allergies and therefore most breastfeeding mothers can eat anything they want. If your baby does react to some food you have eaten, try cutting down on that food. If a mother removes dairy products from her diet she must ensure her calcium intake is good from other foods. The following are allergy prevention guidelines for the high risk baby; • Exclusively breastfeed for 6 months with continued breastfeeding during the addition of complementary foods • Delay potentially allergenic foods until after 12 months • Avoid dairy until after 12 months • Avoid eggs until after 24 months

Baby -l e d-
WEANING WORDS Katherine Truelove-Hawkins: Midwife, Emergency Nurse and Babyled Weaning advocate
We first heard of baby-led weaning (BLW), while watching the ABC series Bringing Up Baby. We loved the idea of sharing meals as a family and allowing our children to explore food in their own time. So, when it came time for our daughter to start solid food, we handed her a chunk of mango and let her go for it. She’s been feeding herself ever since and we couldn’t be happier with the process. Gil Rapley, a health visitor (similar to maternal child health nurse) in the UK, first wrote about BLW while undertaking a Masters research on the development of eating skills in babies. The term “weaning” in this case refers to the commencement of solid foods and not to the cessation of breastfeeding. Parents who practice baby-led weaning do not spoon feed their babies; instead, babies are offered finger foods and allowed to feed themselves without prompting or coaxing. The parent decides what foods baby will be offered and when, the baby then decides what to eat and how much. Parents who practice BLW generally adopt the mantra“ food before one is just for fun”. They plan for their baby to continue receiving most of their food requirements from milk until at least 12 months of age.
blog
26
While there has been little research into baby-led weaning so far, the expected benefits have been described by Rapley (2008) and others. These may include; • Increased opportunity for social interaction. • Learning opportunities. Offering finger foods allows babies to discover different tastes and textures. Eating with the family gives them the opportunity to observe the use of utensils. As well as being able to hear and participate in conversation. • Development of motor skills including hand-eye co-ordination and grasp (learning how to hold objects of different textures and consistency), as well as exercising the muscles of the face, jaw and tongue, which are also used for speech. • Convenience. No need to prepare special meals or mash or puree foods. • Reduced stress and conflict associated with meals. No games or coercion to encourage “just one more bite” and no frustration over specially prepared meals going uneaten.
Some people may be concerned that the baby will choke when trying to eat solid food. However babies, when left to their own devices, are very good at manipulating pieces of food in their mouths. Additionally, the gag reflex is triggered much further forward on the tongue than in adults so babies will usually gag well before the food is anywhere near their airway. Gagging is a normal part of learning to eat; it can be a bit unpleasant but is not harmful in any way and is not the same as choking. Of course all babies should be seated upright and closely supervised while eating. If you are interested in baby-led weaning and would like to learn more the following resources are a good place to start: • www.babyledweaning.com • www.drgreene.com/whiteout • Natural parenting forums such as naturalparenting.com.au • Mothering forum www.mothering.com • Rapley G and Murkett T 2008; Baby-Led Weaning: Helping Your Baby To Love Good Food; Vermilion, London.
• Supporting good eating habits. Babies, especially breastfed babies, already know how to self-regulate their intake. Continuing this habit with BLW may help to reduce problems with overeating and obesity in the future. • Less expensive. No need to buy expensive, and possibly highlyprocessed, foods marketed for babies. Of course there are a few negatives, although most of them can be overcome with some experimenting. • Mess. Self-feeding can be a messy process. • Waste. Not all the food offered will be eaten. Chalk it up to the learning experience, or offer one or two pieces at a time. • Time consuming. Self-feeding will probably take longer than spoon feeding.

KidCsARS IN
At some point, majority of parents would have left their child in the car whilst going to pay for the fuel or pick up some milk, but next time you consider leaving your child in the car make sure you know the risks and the legalities. Recently, a Queensland mother was charged for leaving 3 of her children in the car while she went in to a shopping centre to get three grocery items. Her 10, 5 and 3 year old children where left for only 10 minutes with the car parked undercover, the engine and air-conditioner running and the doors locked from the inside by the 10 year old. Queensland law states, it is illegal to leave a child under 12 unattended for an unreasonable time without making reasonable provision for the supervision and care of the child.
The law is open to interpretation, and according to Legal Aide each case is judged individually with no specific time limit given. So for one case, 3 minutes may be appropriate for another it may not.

For some, this was a neglectful act and the risk of your car being stolen and child being kidnapped were the main concerns, while others felt the car was a safe place for the children considering the number of cars around and the risk of being run over or hit by a car were far greater. It is a personal decision for parents to make by taking the risks, benefits and laws into account as well as what is best for you and your child.
Important facts to remember about leaving kids in cars: The temperature inside a parked car on a hot day can be as much as 400C hotter then the outside temperature. Leaving the windows down roughly 5cm has little effect on rising heat in cars. Even in temperatures of mid 20’s a car can heat to dangerous levels in only 15 minutes. The younger the child is the greater its sensitivity to heatstroke and dehydration which can lead to suffocation and death. 21429 IAG KIDSAFE A3.indd 2

cher Teafeature State School in Brisbane’s north. We relocated to Cairns last year with my family for my husband’s job and I am now teaching at Edge Hill State School.
CPC caught up with Mrs Kym Blake, Prep Teacher, Edge Hill State School. Why did you become a teacher? I always wanted to be a teacher from a very young age. My mum and dad have always told me that even from my own kindy days, I used to set up my own school in my bedroom with all my toys and roleplay teaching them. I love working with children. They are like little sponges that soak everything up so quickly. Tell us a bit about your teaching career? I have been teaching for 20 years and I have worked in a variety of different school settings. I began my teaching career here in Cairns at Cairns North State School, and then taught at HopeVale Aboriginal Community for two years before returning to my hometown of Brisbane. Ferny Hills State School was my next school where I was promoted into the role of Deputy Principal looking after Prep – Year 3. After having my own two children, I decided to relinquish my deputy position and return to the
What would you say is the most rewarding thing about being a teacher? For me, the most rewarding part of teaching is watching the children grow and develop in all areas of the curriculum throughout the year. I love teaching the young students. They come to school all excited and so eager to learn and it is amazing to watch them learn to read, write, do mathematics, demonstrate their creativity and become socially aware during the year. What is the most challenging aspect of teaching? The most challenging aspect is working out what makes individual children achieve their potential. Every child brings with them their own set of experiences; their own preferred learning style and ability, and it is then my challenge to provide programs that cater for this wide range. All children learn in different ways and I aim to cater for each individual child so every child achieves success at school. If you weren’t a teacher what you would be and why? This is a difficult question, because I consider myself very lucky to be in a job that I love. Coming to school each day is not really like work. Every day is so different and exciting so it’s not a job you can become bored of. I honestly couldn’t imagine doing any other job. I had some time off last year and felt lost not looking after my own class!
Mrs Blake’s Nomination Mrs. Blake is a wonderful teacher and a lovely lady. My daughter thinks she is just the funniest and ‘best teacher’ around. Since my daughter has started Prep this year, her speech has improved, as have her learning skills. A big thanks to Mrs. Blake for helping my daughter improve so much in just a short time. Nicole

Weather Early Edu WORDS G8 Education,
Each day your child ventures outside of your home, they are experiencing weather. They can see when it is sunny, can feel the rain on their skin and notice the way their hair blows in the wind. They are able tell that the seasons are changing by the temperature they feel and the clothes they need to wear. There are many fantastic learning opportunities that you are able to share with your child/ren that will aid them in learning these basic weather concepts, as well as allow them to better understand how the weather works. In some cases you may find that you are teaching them about weather that they have never experience first-hand. The Educators at Bayview Heights & Bentley Park World of Learning have a few activities and tools to help teach your children learn about the weather, using simple materials that you can find in your home (or cost very little).
WEATHER BEAR Find a large Teddy Bear and a range of clothes suitable for all different weather types. Sing the following song to your child and have them choose the right clothes for the weather and dress the teddy. This simple activity helps your child make the connection between what they wear and the weather outside.
Phone 07 4036 8111 Po Box 110e, earlville Queensland 4870 email tas@tas.qld.edu.au | fax 07 4036 8222 tas White rock, Progress road tas Kewarra Beach, Poolwood road
cation and Care
It’s hot, hot, hot in the sun, sun, sun. What should teddy wear to play in the sun? It’s cold, cold, cold in the snow, snow, snow. What should Teddy wear to play in the snow? It’s wet, wet, wet in the rain, rain, rain. What should Teddy wear to play in the Rain?
BAG OF RAIN Put a little soil and grass in the bottom of a zip-Lock bag. Pour two spoonful’s of water over the grass. Blow up the bag (seal all but one side, blow up the bag again using a straw and seal the rest of the way). Place the bag in an area that receives a lot of sun, such as in front of a window. After a while you may notice drops of water forming at the top of the bag, once a drop gets large enough it will roll down the sides. And there you have it, your very own bag of rain.
WINDSOCK This activity will help children ‘see’ wind. Cut the end out of a paper bag and have your children decorate the bag in any way they choose. Have them attach streamers to one end of the bag. On the other end of the bag punch two holes (it is best to reinforce with tape before punching the holes), put yarn through the holes. Your children can now hang up their windsock and watch the wind blow through it.

Are you looking for a way for the family to reconnect? Looking to start a family ‘ritual’?

• Develop educational skills through colour recognition, counting, math and spelling.
As owner of the on-line games store, Go 4 Games, Jenni Hall is unashamedly a fan of good old fashioned fun. “Unfortunately in our world today, we are highly influenced by the electronic handheld games and devices on offer and this has meant a decline in the art of playing a family card or board game,” she said. Playing games with your children is a perfect way to spend unhurried and enjoyable times together. Children tend to thrive when they spend time interacting with their parents; games provide a great opportunity for interaction between all family members. What are the benefits from playing card and board games? Parents will get to spend quality time with their children while children also benefit from these games and interactions. By participating in such activities children will: • Learn to interact with others, by communicating verbally and learning how to enjoy sharing. • Learning to focus on a game.

makes for enjoyable time spent together now and can create a lifelong connection
• For adults it can relieve stress by relaxing in the company of family members. My family decided many years ago to hold a Family games night where once a week, we let each child pick a game they wanted to play. We found the children started to think throughout the week what game they would pick to play and come Saturday they had the game out and ready to go. We really enjoyed these evenings as a family, the children were excited and we had many laughs together. So what sort of games are children attracted to? Fast moving games: These are popular as their attention is focused on the game at all times, if everyone is playing at once the competitiveness becomes exciting to children.

Thinking of ideas for a healthy and nutritious lunchbox for your child needn’t be a chore. All that’s needed is a little planning ahead to save you time. We’ve found some great tips and ideas to make your life a little easier. For other great ideas, recipes and tips for the lunchbox or to share your recipes, visit In the Kitchen on our website www.parentingcompanion.com.au
Time saver – Freeze
Some sandwiches freeze really well. Fillings that freeze well include; peanut butter, vegemite, jam, canned tuna, cooked meats including roast beef, chicken, turkey and ham. With hard cheeses it’s best you get out the grater. Place the sandwich in a zip lock bag or airtight container and use within a month.
Don’t like Sandwiches?
Sneaking in veggies!
While sandwiches are an easy lunch box choice, not all kids enjoy them so you’ll need to think of healthy alternatives. We’ve found a few ideas for you.

Don’t freeze salad, veggies or soft cheese – place these in the sandwich in the morning of adding to the lunch box!

Wrap and Roll
Making it fun!
Maybe sandwiches just aren’t their ‘thing’.
Try cookie or sandwich cutters to make sandwiches more fun! Sandwich kebabs - Cut a slice of bread into small squares & slice colourful foods such as cucumber, cheese, tomato & ham and thread the ingredients onto skewers like a kebab!
The more variety you provide, the more likely your child will enjoy their lunch. Try buns, rolls, wraps or even pita breads for a change. These can be filled and frozen just like sandwiches but can be a little more interesting. Try using the whole meal versions, which provides extra essential fibre in your child’s diet.

Community Health is now located at 381 Sheridan St With over 214 years of Nursing, Midwifery and Community Service between them, this amazing Child Health Services Team sure does have a wealth of knowledge to share. The team has previously been based at the Westcourt Community Health Centre on Mulgrave Road, and after almost 20 years, the centre has relocated to the NEW Cairns North Community Health Facility, at 381 Sheridan Street. We met up with the team and talked about some of the services they provide.

Emba r ra ssin g
Bodies! WORDS Dr Liz Chappel, GP – Apple Tree Medical
There are many medical conditions that people may find difficult to discuss.
So much information and misinformation is available to be sort on the Internet, which can easily lead to a heightened and unnecessary state of anxiety. Bodies are not embarrassing to doctors or nurses, if you have a problem that is causing you concern don’t be afraid to discuss it with your health care professional. I have chosen five ‘embarrassing’ problems that you may not have heard of, these serve as examples of things that we may treat.
Peyronie’s Disease This condition affects around 3% of males, usually in the over 40s but can occur in men as young as 18. It is a disorder of the erectile tissue, of the penis in which plaques or scar tissue forms. In most cases the underlying aetiology is unknown but it is thought that infection, medication, auto immune disorders, genetic factors or injury can be the cause in a few cases. Peyronie’s disease can range in severity from mild to moderate and can develop over a period of months or years. Symptoms may include a small ache in the penis and/ or a small lump. As the plaque/scar tissue spreads it causes the penis to bend towards the affected side when erect. This can make erections painful and sexual intercourse difficult. Erections also tend to be softer than usual. If plaques occur on both the upper and lower sides of the penis, it becomes shortened and wider. Treatment is difficult but some surgical procedures can help.
Bartholin’s Abscess Bartholin’s glands are located on either side of the vaginal opening. The duct from the gland can get blocked causing a cyst and this can get infected causing an abscess. Often the abscess will appear over a few days and will form a lump that is hot, swollen and can be excruciatingly painful. Activities that put pressure on the vulva, such as sitting walking and sexual activity are often very uncomfortable. It may cause the patient to have fever and feel generally unwell. Treatment usually requires surgery to drain the abscess. Antibiotics may also be prescribed but are generally ineffective without surgical drainage.

Bacterial Vaginosis (BV) This can affect as many as 1 in 3 women at some point in their lives. It is a disordering of the biochemical and biological balance of the normal vaginal flora causing an alkaline pH

in the vagina. It can often be wrongly confused with thrush/ candidiasis. Symptoms include an off white vaginal discharge (especially after sex) and an unpleasant smell. Whilst it can be associated with sexual activity there is no clear evidence that it is sexually transmitted. Pregnant women (especially if they are iron deficient) and women with sexually transmitted infections are more prone to BV. It is usually diagnosed from a history of the symptoms, a vaginal examination and vaginal swab. BV if left untreated can lead to complications in pregnancy and can also increase susceptibility to infections such as HIV. Treatment is usually in the form of antibiotics. Probiotics used in conjunction with antibiotics have been shown to be helpful.

Vaginal Fistula A fistula is a passage or hole that has formed between two organs. Vaginal fistulas can open up into the urinary tract, rectum, colon and small bowel. Vaginal fistula’s can occur following vaginal surgery, hysterectomy, and radiation treatment to pelvic organs. They may also arise as a result of inflammatory bowel disease and diverticulitis, cancer, a deep tear in the perineum, or an infected episiotomy following childbirth. In developed countries fistulas are rare, but in

third world countries where women in labour have little or no medical aid, fistulas are not uncommon and are often caused as a result of prolonged and complicated labours. A fistula, though painless, can cause embarrassing incontinence problems and foul smelling discharge, leading to irritation and infection of the genital area. Fistulas generally require surgery to repair them. I would thoroughly recommend a most inspirational book Hospital by the River written by Dr Catherine Hamlin, an amazing lady who has dedicated her life to her work for the Addis Ababa Fistula hospital. As I understand, she is now in her late 80s and still operating on women with vaginal fistula.
Gyanecomastia Gyanecomastia is the abnormal development of glandular tissue in men, leading to enlarged breasts. Gyanecomastia affects up to 60% of the male population, from newborns to older men. In newborns, it is generally caused by female hormones from the mother and often resolves in adolescents. In older men it is generally the result of a metabolic disorder, medications, drugs (such as steroids and cannabis), obesity or genetics. Gyanecomastia can be a huge source of distress for teenage boys, but in the vast majority of cases pubescent gynaecomastia disappears within a couple of years. Treatment or persistent gynaecomastia involves treating the underlying cause; these often include weight loss, a review of medications and breast reduction surgery. diagnosis. It is caused by auto-immune destruction of the pancreas, meaning, the body inappropriately attacks itself causing death to part of the pancreas that produces insulin. Over a short period of time the body cannot produce enough insulin to control blood glucose and without treatment, patients become extremely unwell and die. Before the discovery of insulin in the 1920s, the age expectancy was the early 20s however, the first person to be treated with insulin died in her 80s. This form commonly affects children and teenagers (peak is at age 12), but sometimes young adults as well. It currently accounts for a quarter of all new diabetes diagnoses, and is increasing. We think that viral illnesses may be involved, which causes the inappropriate immune response in the body. It used to be the most important form of diabetes for children, but the rising incidence of type 2 diabetes is competing for this, which is very worrying (see below).
This is a different story, however. This used to be called Non-Insulin Dependent Diabetes Mellitus, as it does not require insulin treatment initially. However, since so many people with type 2 diabetes now are treated with insulin, the term has become outdated and inaccurate. In the 1980s the percentage of new cases of diabetes in children being type 2 was only about 10%. This has since risen to between 20-45%; this worrying trend is explained by the rise of overweight and obese children. Type 2 diabetes occurs slowly over years and is the result

There is also a genetic component making some people more susceptible to the disease, but diet and lifestyle are by far the most important cause. This leads to insulin resistance, which means that the approach to treating type 2 diabetes is different and just giving insulin is not enough. This resistance to insulin needs

WORDS Alana Mott, Dentist Hygenist at Cairns City Dental
Pregnancy is a special and exciting time, with the expectant mother wanting to ensure she has fully prepared for the arrival of her new baby, which can be intense. However, it is essential for a mother to also take care of her own health during this time. This includes her oral health, which should ideally be addressed before falling pregnant and continue during the pregnancy. There is an old wives tale ‘for every child gained, the mother looses a tooth’. But with good hygiene and a dental care plan, women in our day and age should not loose teeth.
PREGNANCY ORAL COMPLICATIONS : During pregnancy there are many changes to your body. Some of these can affect your teeth and gums. Your oral health may also have an effect on you and your developing baby. EROSION: Many women suffer from morning sickness during pregnancy. Consistent vomiting will increase the risk of enamel erosion and demineralisation. The constant exposure to gastric acid will decrease the pH of the oral environment and endanger your teeth. PREVENTION: • Ensure you avoid brushing your teeth at least one hour after vomiting. • Instead, rinse with tap water and/or chew sugar-free gum. • Seek dental advice regarding mouth rinses and tooth mousses. GUM DISEASE: Statistics show that around 50% of all pregnant women suffer from gingivitis during pregnancy, especially during the second or third trimester of pregnancy. Gingivits is a gum condition that is associated with plaque and results in swollen, inflammed gums that may be tender and

Halitosis (bad breath) is also associated with gum diseases. Periodontal disease is a more powerful form of gum disease and can result in the permanent loss of bone and tissue that support the teeth. This may mean eventual tooth loss if left untreated. With regular dental treatment in combination with good oral hygiene, the risk of tooth loss is minimal. Periodontal disease may also increase the risk of low birth weight, preeclampsia and pregnancy diabetes.

Bacteria in the oral cavity produce toxins which can enter the bloodstream. In response to these toxins, the body releases prostaglandins. These toxins can produce smooth muscle contraction and increase your risk of premature labour.

DECAY: During pregnancy, food cravings may occur, resulting in snacking throughout the day. This can increase the risk of decay. To reduce this risk, ensure you adequately brush your teeth morning and night, rinse with water

Help can be found at: www.quitnow.info.au or call Quitline on 13 QUIT (13 7948) PREGNANCY CHECKLIST: Women should ideally visit a dental surgery prior to conception, to ensure optimal health care routine. Once pregnant, the second trimester is the safest time to carry out dental treatment. AT HOME MAINTENANCE: • Clean between your teeth with floss or brushing your teeth. • Brush your teeth and gums twice a day with a soft toothbrush and fluoridated toothpaste. • Spit the toothpaste out, but do not rinse, to ensure you receive the fluoride benefit. • Choose healthy snacks like nuts / cheese. • Avoid too frequent snacking. • Sip tap water daily and chew sugar-free gum to stimulate saliva, which helps to protect your teeth against tooth decay.

Self-Defense, Self-Confidence and
Bully-Proofing Your Kids Why do some kids turn to bullying? Why are some kids bullied? It has been shown there is a direct link between a child’s self-confidence, being bullied or becoming a bully. With many parents at a loss as to how to help their child, selfdefense and martial arts schools are filling in some of the blanks. The main goal of self-defense classes and courses is to teach the students first and foremost, fighting is not the answer. They are taught instead to diffuse the situation or get out of the situation with words, before fists are ever raised. Two of the local options for parents to look into are little known Choi Kwang Do and Muay Thai. Choi Kwang Do Martial Art (CKDMA) is not only about physical self-defense, but aims to teach kids the skills such as confidence, selfrespect, respect for others and self control to encourage growth in their development in society. In turn, not only does CKDMA aim to give the skills to manage being bullied, but also prevent the bully coming out in a child. Because Choi Kwang Do is founded in the basic principles of non-violent self-defense, it’s a non-contact, non-fighting art that stresses mental, physical, emotional and social development, promoting non-violent resolutions to conflict. In addition, with competition removed, students can continually develop not against each other, but with each other whilst gaining confidence through each of the belt levels to the ultimate black belt standard. At each level, students are encouraged to aim for their
own personal achievement alongside their fellow students. With the support of qualified instructors, many who are parents themselves, a family environment is created providing mentoring and a supportive community for a child who may be going through a difficult time with bullying. These principles combined can benefit the child that is the bully or the child that is a victim of bullying – both deserve guidance in the right direction. Muay Thai, also known as Thai boxing, has changed dramatically in recent years to become a popular sport that teaches not only selfdefense and self confidence, but also respect for yourself and others - and its great for fitness too! Muay Thai trainer ‘Boy’ grew up in a very poor village in northeast Thailand where he, like all other kids in his village, stared learning basic Muay Thai almost from the time he could walk. Since moving to Cairns and teaching locally, he has been shocked at the amount of physical and emotional bullying. In Thailand it is almost nonexistent as children are taught from a young age to defend themselves and to respects all others. Muay Thai for children is about developing their skills and confidence to be able to look after themselves and those around them while also keeping them fit, active and healthy. Bullying is identified as a huge issue as it can ruin a child’s self confidence for life. With the benefits of Martial Arts in your child’s life they will see the life-long physical, emotional and psychological positives.

Any trip to the cleaning product section of the supermarket and you will see a myriad of products, scrubs, bleaches and detergents all claiming to clean your home better than the next. Most of these products are not only super expensive, they are also poisonous to both people and the environment! With a few very basic ingredients that you probably already have in your cupboard at home, you can make your very own cleaning products that are natural, good for the planet and are nontoxic. Best of all – making your own products at home is CHEAP and will save you hundreds of dollars per year! Here are a few easy ones to try! If you would rather have someone else do it for you, there are companies offering chemical free cleaning. Laurie from Cairns Complete Clean tells us: “We offer Chemical Free cleaning by the use of Micro Fibre technology. Before we started using microfibres our staff was using a variety of chemicals to clean households and this came at a great cost potentially to staffs health, staff’s health, customer’s health and the environment (not to mention the wallet). So a conscious decision was made to change. We now offer a Chemical Free service with the final result being a clean house with no chemical residue. This is so important when there are young children, people with allergies, elderly and even pets in the household.”

WORDS Aileen Jones - BDO Private Wealth
The need to be a Super Mum/Dad is on the top of your list when you become a parent – but becoming a super parent often depletes another area in your life – your Superannuation! Australian stay-at-home mums need to contribute approximately $70 per week to their superannuation nest egg in order to maintain their financial future.
Super is the second most valuable asset for families after their home for securing their financial future, so jumping on board by topping up your balances is vital. The media advertise that we are all deciding to have families later in life. Statistics show that in 1980, the average age for an Australian woman to start a family was between 20-24. In 2008, the majority of Australian women (39.8%) start a family between 25-34 years. The career breaks in your work life at the peak of your earning potential in order to start a family can have a dissolving effect on your superannuation balance. But, once the family starts growing, superannuation for mums and dads is usually put on the back burner. Recent studies have shown that the *600,000

This $70 a week ensures that their balance stays competitive in the current market without causing too much disadvantage. This equates to a whopping $3,640 per year! So, the question is ‘How do we engage ourselves now before re-entering into the workforce and the super ball-game?’ There are a few simple strategies that can be implemented in order to top-up that nest egg for the future and this depends on how much you are currently earning. If you are a Low Income Earner (under $31,920) and you make a personal contribution of $1,000 to your super account or RSA (Retirement Savings Account) the government will match your contribution dollar-for-dollar up the maximum limit of $1,000. If you earn between $31,291 and $61,290, you are considered a Middle Income Earner. Should you make a personal contribution to
your super account or RSA; the government will adjust their contribution by reducing the matching rate by 3.333c for every dollar you earn over $31,290. And finally, if you earn under $10,800 and your spouse (whether married or de-facto) makes a voluntary contribution to your superannuation of up to $3,000, the contributing spouse may be eligible to claim a 18% tax offset (maximum tax offset of $540) should you comply with all eligibility standards. To sum-up, there are some simple strategies available to suit most situations that look to keep you and your super working while you are busy working on your main focus - your family. To avoid missing long-term wealth, we recommend you re-engage with your super by coming in to talk about your options. We look forward to meeting with you! END OF FINANCIAL YEAR
What to get organised, what to consider and what to look for in the year ahead. Most small businesses dread the End of Financial Year, as it can be just another job that takes time out of running your small business. If this is how you feel at tax time, it’s time to take a different approach and turn it into an opportunity to review and plan for your financial future. So where do you start? Get organised: Don’t leave tax planning until June 30th, as this is usually too late. Start putting together what I call your tax pack, so all of your financial information is together in one place. This includes; • BAS lodgements • Bank/Credit card/Loan account statements • Copies of receipts • Superannuation statements • Health Fund statements Once your financial information is together, it’s time to organise an appointment with your Financial Advisor. A discussion with your Financial Advisor at this time should include your financial performance year to date, as well as your expected income and expenses for the remaining period. This information will enable you to have a meaningful discussion around tax effective strategies suitable for your business and/or family situation. Doing your tax planning early enables your Financial Advisor to provide you with the best possible strategies for you and your small business.

MAN about the house None of the following is representative of the views of Cairns Parenting Companion and for reasons of personal safety the author wishes to remain anonymous. Yep! He’s a bloke and he’s confused.
Child Proofing the Family Home! They say; “an ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure”. That’s why we bar our kids from swimming straight after lunch, insist they wear thongs in the showers at caravan parks and prevent them mixing GI cordial and milk in the same stomach. Isn’t it? But aside from cramps, tinea and green regurgitations, I didn’t start out giving much attention to child proofing until children numbers three and four (boys 13 months apart, famously known as “Seek” and “Destroy”). The two little thrill-seekers inspired me to try and become an Olympic standard, ‘Class A’ parental risk assessor and child proofer. At first we thought it was all about ‘safety height zones’, based on how far a child can reach. Child number one was easy. The original golden boy had so much attention he was never given enough time to raid the pill cabinet or drink from the dogs bowl. Child number two came into her own when she learnt to walk, this meant the zone between 15cm and 1m became ‘no kids land’. Easy enough. Then along came “Seek”, he was one of those rare babies who never crawled. Seek got everywhere by rolling, and in the process exposed a flaw in our safety zone; the area between floor level and 15cms. His favourite trick was to roll next to and reach under the lounge to find fluff covered delights and eat them. As a consequence we reassessed the lower ‘zone’ and all was peaceful for a while. Then along came Seek’s “partner in grime”, child number 4, known as “Destroy”. As they grew, there was a mischievous synergy between the two and nothing was safe, they were literally into everything. In our efforts to combat this situation the house was starting to look like we were preparing for the local levy to break. Walls and bookshelves became

bare. Cupboards and draws were locked, taped or tied in impossible knots that were often never able to be untied. All power points had white plastic safety plugs inserted to keep curious little electricians from poking knives into the sockets. The irony is that when you want to use the power point again yourself, it requires a rather solid, thin, wedge-like tool to remove these plugs. Pretty much, umm, something like, err, a knife!
...boys 13 months apart, famously known as Seek and Destroy...
The Seek and Destroy partnerships will always find loopholes in any child-proofing plan and proceed to tear through them at their leisure. The best you can do is to try and stay a step ahead and hope that any creative redecoration with a powder based fire extinguisher coincides with Christmas. However, I’d feel guilty if I didn’t offer any advice at all, so in 25 words or less here’s what I did with children 5, 6 and 7. If you’re serious about child-proofing then start thinking like an inquisitive child, get on your hands and knees and have an exploratory crawl around the house. You’ll soon start to see what needs a little attention; you might even find some delicious fluff covered jelly beans while you’re down there.
As Seek and Destroy became more dexterous and bold, they literally laughed at our efforts. How could we compete with imaginations that had no boundaries? Like the time I couldn’t figure out why Destroy smelt like old roast lamb and the family hound wouldn’t leave his side. Turned out he’d been hiding in the oven. I mean, how do you risk assess for that one? Towards the desperate end we found that it was best to be pre-emptive in our child proofing, with what became known as the “flanno-straightjacket” method. Just take an everyday size XL flannelette shirt, button it onto the infantile delinquent backwards, and take up the slack by wrapping the arms around their body and tying tightly in front. Not surprisingly those two little home wreckers had a ball in their straight-jackets. They’d chase each other around the house with arms all tied up, completely loose balance on tight corners, slip over and slide, legs akimbo and laughing, along the polished floors into the furniture.
