FROM THE PRESIDENT Five years ago I saw the words ‘Are you interested in roller derby?’ while browsing through community ads online. Was I interested? Absolutely, but I had only a very rudimentary idea of exactly what that meant. Turns out the reality was a lot more than I had anticipated. Being interested in roller derby meant a lot of things to me in the early days. It meant failing once, failing twice and then failing all over again. It meant hurt muscles and hurt pride. It meant being at a level of frustration that I had never experienced before in my life. It meant feeling like I might never be able to get it right. It meant wanting to throw in the towel on more than one occasion. Often when it was hardest I found myself wondering when I’d start to feel this “derby love” so many people talked about. But then being ‘interested in roller derby’ came to mean a few other things to me as well. Being interested in roller derby means pushing past what you think you can do. It means learning to work with people in constructive and supportive ways, even when you think they’re wrong. It means going back time after time until one day you start to feel like maybe you’re doing something right. It means developing relationships with people you would otherwise never have crossed paths with. It means being proud of a community that you helped build – even in the smallest way. All that we’ve done in the past five years wouldn’t have been possible without the support of the Guelph community. I’m so thankful for the way that roller derby, and our league as a whole, has been supported from day one. From our earliest sponsors who showed us love even when we could barely stand on skates to our founding members that have since moved on, each one of you have played an important role in where we are today, and for that I want to say thank you. We’re looking to the future, with 2015 promising to be a big year for RCRG. Our charter team, The Brute Leggers, are now full WFTDA members and they’re focused on making their way up the rankings. We’ve got a full summer of home team bouts all lined up, and keep your eyes peeled for a documentary in the works that’s all about our league. As we enter a new season let’s keep the energy of the founding spirit of this amazing league alive. Are you interested in roller derby? Then we’ll see you trackside. - Blood Thirsty Kirstie

COMING IN SUMMER 2015 Prepare to take a peak inside the world of roller derby through a new documentary film, entitled ‘Flat Track Confidential’, created by local photographer/cinematographer Jason Gemnich and featuring our very own Royal City Roller Girls. Gemnich (or ‘Doc U Mental’, as he goes by in derby circles), has always been interested by the idea of creating a derby documentary and saw his chance once his wife joined the league. He notes: ‘When my wife joined the RCRG I became intrigued about this fast-growing sport and decided it would make the perfect subject matter for a film. The blazing action, the lifestyle, and the stories of the skaters were just waiting to be told.’ This is roller derby. Created from over 48 hours of footage, this feature-length film features the 2014 season in depth – from fresh meat to practices; scrimmages to games; candid interviews to roller derby culture. Throughout this impressive documentary, Gemnich effectively captures both trials and tribulations as our local players share their stories about what has drawn them to the sport. ‘Flat Track Confidential’ is set for a local release in summer 2015 – so stay tuned.
