We’d love to see your smiling face in Market Square, at a Storm game, on campus, at the Farmers’ Market or anywhere else in town. We also love shots of landmarks like the Speed and Eramosa Rivers and the covered wooden bridge, McCrae House and the Armoury, the Basilica of Our

Heading into Guelph from the north end, the countryside meets the city and the two blend together seamlessly, because here, our urban lifestyle includes the great outdoors. From parks, trails and sprawling golf greens, to the indoor necessities for every urbanite, we offer familiar restaurants, brand name stores, a Galaxy Cinema, and all the conveniences you’d expect of a city. The north end is just the beginning. Head into Guelph and get ready to explore.

The North End The Arboretum offers 165-hectares of protected natural landscape on the outskirts of the University of Guelph, and just minutes from the downtown core of our city. In all seasons, it acts as a living classroom of diverse plants, wildlife, forests and trails. Naturalists and horticulturalists, artists and more host courses and tours in this outdoors sanctuary. This special place is also the setting for unique celebrations, like weddings, conferences and dedication ceremonies. The Arboretum is an experience for all ages and an important part of Guelph’s environment.

The Ward is active with an edge, with two hot spots for adventure enthusiasts of all ages. The Ward Skate Park and Shop and The Guelph Grotto Climbing Company are just two of the highlights of the neighbourhood that have each created exceptional spaces for equally unique sports, all under one roof. Sharing a space on the southern end of The Ward, they offer courses, programs and skills for anyone who is willing to step beyond their comfort zone. It’s a very Guelph thing to do.

Change happens in every community, but in Guelph we have grown consciously. Preservation Park is an example of our commitment to green spaces and connecting communities. A sprawling 27 hectare landscape, with trails through forest and wetlands, it’s a hikers playground on the doorstep of the city.

neighbourhoods

No trip to Guelph’s north end is complete without a visit to Riverside Park. Generations of families have enjoyed this green space with accessible playgrounds, paddleboats, miniature train rides and the beautiful painted horses of the carousel. In summer, the community gathers for special events like the Guelph District Multicultural Festival, Ribfest, Canada Day celebrations and more. In the holiday season, the park is alive with lights for Guelph Rotary’s Sparkles in the Park. All year round, Riverside Park is a place where families meet, children play and community happens.

Things to do

The North End

Just on the outskirts of the city, the Ignatius Jesuit Centre is an expanse of nature with a greenbelt that stretches from the Guelph Lake Conservation Area to the Guelph Elora Trail. It is the root for the Ignatius Old-Growth Forest, a project 500 years in the making. The working farm includes the Ignatius Community Shared Agriculture lands, promoting sustainable agriculture. The massive grounds are also home to the internationally renowned Loyola House Retreat Centre, a training facility that offers sanctuary in a beautiful setting. The trails and wide-open spaces are open to the public year-round. Just 2 km north of Guelph, the grounds offer a sense of tranquility, immersed in nature on the edge of the urban landscape.

Guelph’s south end is a thriving expanse of all the things that makes Guelph great, and all the conveniences a visitor could want. Heading off Highway 401 or Highway 6, you will find easy access to fabulous restaurants, from well-known favourites to homegrown establishments, plus plenty of popular shopping retailers. Blended in are natural landscapes, brand new communities connected by trails and parks. All the modern conveniences of a growing city are here, but without the congestion. Check out the action.

The Ward

If the character of a community comes through in its neighbourhoods, then The Ward is a great representation of what makes Guelph unique. Just minutes from downtown, on the east side of the Speed River, this eclectic enclave represents the working history of our city, from the wartime homes on neat streets aligned with some of the grandest homes in the city. It’s a village unto itself, with easy access to shopping, cafes and restaurants, plus many parks and wide-open green spaces. It offers the balance of an active city life with amazing community amenities, all with a small village appeal.

The University District

The gatekeeper of the University of Guelph is a giant Gryphon who holds court on the corner of Stone Road and Gordon Street, welcoming thousands each day into one of Canada’s most impressive university campuses. The varsity vibe of the University of Guelph is an authentic culture of academia, sport, art and sciences that stretch beyond the campus into the city, creating a sense of inclusiveness that enhances both the metropolitan appeal of Guelph and that small town attitude that we treasure here. The village-like campus is alive in all seasons, a place of innovation and learning for more than 20,000 students year round. Amongst the heritage buildings are the modern structures, an art gallery and renowned athletic facilities. And true to Guelph’s nature, The Arboretum is an environmental haven open to the public in all seasons.

Local food is always in season at the Guelph Farmers’ Market. 14.

Local food is always in season and the Guelph Farmers’ Market is the place to source it all. Community happens here. Every Saturday all year round, neighbours gather to experience the fun and flavours of farm fresh fruits, vegetables, quality meats, cheese, baked goods and preserves. Just as important, this is where we meet the people who grow our food. Surrounded by prime farmland, Guelph enjoys the bounty of truly local, fresh foods. In the winter the market is indoors, but come summer, the market moves outside and the tradition continues. This is a must-do event for your weekend plans.

Downtown: Guelph’s Heartbeat

D

owntown Guelph is the heart of our city, with a pulse that beats to its own rhythm day and night, in any season. It’s an eclectic vibe; unique to us because we have everything a big city should offer, without losing our sense of connectedness to our past, our environment or each other. This is a place where people make eye contact and say hello, where customer service is more than a promise, and our shops and restaurants are as unique as the community that supports them. Spend an hour, a day, or a night in our downtown, and you’ll feel it too. You can shop anywhere, but you’ll remember shopping in Guelph. It’s an experience of unique boutiques, with a passion for vintage clothing, recycled fashions and even furniture, to the latest trends in home décor, fine fashions and treasures you didn’t even know you were looking for. True to our essence, our focus on environmental consciousness is encouraged with a number of stores that

offer environmentally friendly products for everything from house wares and every day essentials to bridal gowns. Foodies will find fabulous flavours, book lovers will flip their pages; even comic fans have more than a shelf in Guelph. From one store to the next, you’ll be impressed with the selection and the values found here. If it’s food you crave, then welcome to the city that celebrates cuisine culture. Downtown Guelph has something to please any palette, from locally inspired menu creations, to ethnic flavours, traditional favourites and even a few names you’ve come to know, all within blocks of one another. From fine dining to pub menus and everything in between, we’ll feed your soul and of course, we’ll have local beer and wine to give you an authentic Guelph taste experience. Cheers to that! Don’t leave yet; the night is young. We don’t roll up the sidewalks at the end of the day, we throw open the doors to some amazing gathering spots. From dance clubs and pubs, for the young and the young-at-heart, to cafes with acoustic sets and jazz bars that light up the night, our city is as alive after hours as it is when the sun comes up. Good times happen in Downtown Guelph.

Beer me by Laura Mousseau

Established in 1985, Wellington Brewery is the oldest and largest of Guelph’s operating craft breweries, followed by StoneHammer Brewing (1995) and most recently, Royal City Brewing Company (2013). That may seem like a lot of breweries for a small city, but Guelph has a long history with beer dating back to 1851 when the Sleeman family started brewing here as Silver Springs Brewery. Despite the profusion of craft brewers, the air is not one of competition. Mutual respect and camaraderie define Guelph’s craft beer scene, along with social good; they all make efforts to support local events and charities. And whether it’s a regular, seasonal or even a collaboration brew, you can be sure there’s a Guelph–made beer to suit your palette.

Wellington Brewery (950 Woodlawn Road West) offers great year–round brews including their popular Special Pale Ale, and is famous for their one–off series which offers beer lovers a range of styles throughout the year. Past oneoffs include Bad Seed Pomegranate Wheat Ale, Cuckoo for Cocoa Husks Porter and Frost Quake Bourbon Barrel Aged Barleywine. Their retail store is open daily with free Saturday tastings. wellingtonbrewery.ca

I

love beer. I love trying different kinds of beer. And I love that, as a groundwater community, our hard water is great for making most beer styles—or at least that’s what a brewmaster told me. Maybe that explains Guelph’s affection for beer. With three craft breweries and a host of bars featuring taps full of craft beers, Guelph is where it’s at for beer.

19.

Voted #1 Pub! Voted #1 Family Restaurant! 22 Craft Beers on Tap!

For us, it’s all in the numbers!

Royal City Brewing Co. (199 Victoria Road South, Unit 8C) specializes in variety, making small batches of unique beers. Besides the 30 or so semi-regular rotating brews like Smoked Honey, Gordon Hill Hefeweizen and Morning Stout (made with beans from Guelph’s own Grizzly Bear Coffee), Royal City introduces up to three new, unfiltered brews a week. Plus, they have great space for sampling with friends. royalcitybrew.ca If you can’t get to the breweries or want to try craft brews from Guelph and beyond, you won’t have to go far. Check out Baker Street Station (76 Baker Street), Fionn MacCool’s (494 Edinburgh Road South), OX (37 Quebec Street), Shakespeare Arms (35 Harvard Road) or Woolwich Arrow (176 Woolwich Street).

StoneHammer Brewing (355 Elmira Road North, Unit 135) offers six year–round and two seasonal beers (with two more in the works), and is looking forward to brewing more one–offs. Year–round brews include their well–known StoneHammer Dark and the Oatmeal Coffee Stout, made with beans from local roastery, Planet Bean. Saturday tours can be booked in advance. stonehammer.ca

t’s easy to be sweet on our city. Around every corner you’ll find incredible delectables made by food artisans whose flavourful creations are more than just eye candy. We can’t explain our addiction to sweet treats, but rest assured, you’ll find everything from the classic candy fixes to the fluffiest puff pastries in Guelph. Go ahead. Indulge.

Candy SWEET! Retro never tasted so good. Step back in time to find an atmosphere of yesteryear in the candy store that brings back the fun. You’ll find classic candy favourites and rare finds too, right across from Guelph’s City Hall. It’s worth the visit. THE NUTTY CHOCOLATIER Confectionary treasures abound at The Nutty Chocolatier. The finest Belgian Chocolate is the essential ingredient to create decadent hand crafted truffles, holiday themed treats, and specialty gifts. And don’t forget the fudge, nut clusters and barks. We dare you not to indulge.

CAKE & PASTRIES ERIC THE BAKER Enjoy a taste of Paris in this patisserie boulanger nestled in the heart of downtown Guelph. With a daily menu featuring sweet and savoury delights, you’ll enjoy fresh croissants and brilliant brioches creations, to crusty artisanal breads, and classic pastries like meat pies and sweet tarts, fresh sandwiches and decadent desserts. It’s a sensory delight on Carden Street. WELLINGTON CAKES Window-shopping never tasted so sweet. Wellington Cakes is a boutique cake shop worth the stroll along Douglas Street, for a tempting treasure of artisan cupcakes, baked goods, and elegant specialty cake creations that look as incredible as they taste. WEST END BAKERY AND CAFÉ Fresh, homemade treats, breads and delicious baked goods line the counter of the West End Bakery and Café, and have for generations. Quality and tradition: it’s everything delicious you’d expect from a bakery. WITH THE GRAIN Just north of the downtown core, With the Grain is a busy café that features fresh baking and unique foods on a menu of daily specials. You’ll find artisanal breads, scones and squares, next to pies and cookies too. Plus, a pantry stocked with take-home ingredients to create your own kitchen favourites.

CUPCAKES KILLER CUPCAKES GOREMET The bitesize cupcakes pack a punch, with a scrumptious buffet of flavours, every one unique. The name says it all: these cupcakes fly off the shelves because they are killer good. Famous for their summertime Cupcake Drive-in, known as The Schack in Aberfolyle, you’ll find them all year round on Wilson Street in downtown Guelph. SWEET TEMPTATIONS CUPCAKERY Mastering the art of the cupcake, Sweet Temptations Cupcakery is a sweetly established bakery in Guelph’s southend whose unique flavours have put them on the map in several locations. You’ll also find their delicious cupcakes at both the Guelph and Aberfoyle Farmers’ Markets. DECADENTLY YOURS Every day, the aroma of freshly baked goodness wafts out of the kitchen of the bakery and store on Surrey Street, home to an array of flavoured cupcakes, specialty cakes, cookies, pies and more. It’s impossible not to want a taste.

THE BOATHOUSE There is nothing quite like sitting riverside, enjoying ice cream at one of Guelph’s favourite gathering spots. This is a place where friends and family gather to savour some ice cold flavours and just chill out by the water.

COFFEE CULTURE Baristas behold! The only thing we love more than the aroma of freshly baked treats in Guelph is the smell of coffee brewing, and we have high standards on what makes a good cup of Java. That’s why we have one of the best assortments of coffee houses per capita for a small city, so that everyone can find their perfect cup of coffee, be it espresso, cappuccino, latte, whatever stirs your pot. Guelph’s coffee culture reflects the atmosphere of our city. We prefer fair-trade and organic beans enjoyed in a relaxed setting, where friends gather, books can be read, or travel mugs allow us to take the flavours and tour around the city.

hether you hit the trails, set up the sails or paddle along, in Guelph we like to explore our city and we know you will too. We offer the best of urban adventure, a one-stop destination for fun, with plenty of places and spaces to unwind. From the fantastic biking routes, to Speed River Paddling, to the beautiful hiking trails, there is so much to see and do. You’ll remember the adventures you had here. SPEED RIVER INFERNO

World class track and field is coming to the Royal City. Saturday, May 30, Guelph will play host to the Speed River Inferno Track and Field Festival Presented by New Balance. The meet will welcome over 300 athletes from 15 countries. As the only Ontario member of Canada’s National Track League, the meet will offer fans a great chance to see some of the stars of this year’s Pan Am Games in a final tune up before they descend on Toronto. The Festival also includes a community participation mile in downtown Guelph on Friday, May 29. For more information visit speedriverinferno.com.

GUELPH STORM

Nothing whips up a frenzy of competitive spirit in our city like the Guelph Storm. When the puck drops, teams from the Ontario Hockey League face off at centre ice in the Sleeman Centre, where fans get up close to all the action. This is the place to see the future stars of the NHL today.

The Boys of Summer There is nothing quite like a summer night at the ball park, watching the boys of summer take to the field and hearing those magic words “let’s play ball” echo up to the crowds in the stands of Exhibition Park. This is where community happens.

At one time the team was owned by George Sleeman, owner of Sleeman Breweries, a baseball enthusiast and former pitcher, whose investment in making the team a competitive force earned him a place in the Canadian Baseball Hall of Fame as a builder of the team back in 1874. Guelph Royals current owner Jim Rooney says the legacy of the team is alive today because of community spirit. And it goes both ways. The non-profit club, run entirely by volunteers, regularly supports local charities and hosts fun nights for businesses and community groups. “I’m simply the custodian of the franchise, but it belongs to the community,” Rooney says. “I believe in the community and the value of sport and what it can do for young people and what it does for a community. Let’s come to the ball park and have some fun. It’s all for the love of the game.” Guelph’s passion for the game has kept the Guelph Royals successful, as one of only two original IBL teams in the league, along with neighbouring city Kitchener. The reward is on the field. In 2014, the amateur team held the two first team All Stars, two second team All Stars and Rookie of the Year in the IBL. It has also launched the careers of athletes like St. Louis Cardinal’s Jamie Pogue, Montreal Expos and Cleveland Indians’ Jeremy Ware, Toronto Blue Jay’s Shawn Pearson and Minnesota Twin’s Scott Diamond.

Move. Cheer. Play.

The Guelph Royals of the Intercounty Baseball League (IBL) have a proud tradition embedded in this town that dates back to 1861. Lester B. Pearson even took a swing at the plate playing with the team for a season, back when they were the Guelph Maple Leafs.

FINISH your tour with a visit to Guelph’s newest outdoor art installation, Remember Flanders, a larger than life bronze sculpture of LieutenantColonel John McCrae by Ruth Abernethy (to be unveiled late June 2015). Donated in commemoration of the 100th anniversary of the writing of McCrae’s poem In Flanders Fields, the sculpture sits prominently in the newlylandscaped front garden of Guelph Civic Museum at the highest point in the city’s downtown. In Flanders Fields at 100

Who was John McCrae? John McCrae is known around the world as the author of In Flanders Fields, a poem that influenced the way we remember the First World War. This year, in McCrae’s hometown, we commemorate the 100th anniversary of the poem and invite you to get to know the man behind the words a little better. Not just John the soldier-poet, but John the adventurer, John the pathologist, John the son, and John the Guelphite. When you step into McCrae House, John McCrae’s birthplace, you’ll begin a truly unique museum experience celebrating one of Canada’s most fascinating individuals. McCrae experienced and achieved an incredible amount during his short life. He was author of the most famous poem of the First World War, a leading pathologist, an avid traveler and explorer (once taking part in a canoe expedition to Hudson’s Bay led by Lord

Earl Grey), and a soldier, who served in the Boer War and the First World War. The new exhibitions at McCrae House showcase artifacts from the museum’s extensive collection, and use a variety of media, to bring McCrae’s story to life in a new and dynamic way. There are opportunities for participation and interaction, and places for contemplation and reflection. “Visiting the museum will be a totally immersive experience,” says resident McCrae expert and Guelph Museums curator Bev Dietrich. “One that will put McCrae’s life and accomplishments into perspective, and teach you things you didn’t know about the man.” After extensive renovation, McCrae House National Historic Site re-opens to the public in May 2015.

“In Flanders fields the poppies blow...”

On May 1, 1915, Alexis Helmer died during the Second Battle of Ypres, in Flanders, when a shell exploded at his feet. Helmer was a member of the same brigade as John McCrae. In fact, when the Padre was not available, McCrae, as senior officer, led Helmer’s burial service — and that same day composed his famous poem. Although it may be hard to imagine, the poppies that McCrae describes in the poem grew in abundance during the war: the fighting in Belgium disturbed the ground where the poppy seeds had long lay dormant, and caused them to germinate. Soldiers sometimes plucked the red poppies and wore them in their helmets. What a shock it must have been to see these delicate, bright splashes of new life amidst all the death and destruction of the battlefields. John McCrae’s genius was realizing the power of this image. The poem was published in Punch magazine in December 1915, and was an immediate success. McCrae was thrilled with the public’s reaction to his poem, but didn’t live long enough to see its full impact, succumbing to pneumonia in France three years later.

This summer join us in the backyard of McCrae House for A Night in Flanders, an original play by Donald Macrae. Enjoy compelling theatre in the open air, as it was meant to be experienced - just ask Shakespeare! On the night of May 2, 1915, John McCrae returns to his dugout physically and emotionally exhausted after having buried a comrade, Alexis Helmer. He closes his eyes to rest, and when he opens them a moment later, he finds himself in a strange, dream-like state. Has he too died? Or is he merely sleeping? Confused and distraught, he revisits the day’s events, the chaos of war, his life up to this point. As he struggles with difficult questions, a surprise visit from his beloved mother helps him to put things in perspective.

A limited engagement, beginning July 2 Wednesday to Saturday, 7 p.m. at McCrae House $20 Tickets can be purchased online at guelphmuseums.ca

Featuring original music, this is a night of theatre you won’t soon forget, one that will forever change the way you read the poem.
