Fashion in the 2000’s

ashion in the year 2000 consisted of new trends and old trends. With the recent advances in technology, where we get influence and buy fashion has changed throughout the years. I am going to be starting at the year of 2000 and looking at how fashion and its influencers have changed on the lead up to recent years. I will be looking at the impact that past trends have had in fashion, the drivers of fashion and what the future holds.

Celebrities C

elebrities have played a huge role in fashion throughout the 2000s, they are what the consumer looks up to. In past years if a rapper wanted to attach their name to a label they would create their own clothing line; this is seen in recent years with Kanye Wests line of Yeezy season 1 and 2. Brands promote their clothes by teaming up with different celebrities. Collaborations such as Ivy Park, where TopShop teamed up with Beyoncé have done wonders for the brands image with thousands of people idolising Beyoncé and wanting to purchase her clothes.

Kelly Brooke is a well-known actress, model and television presenter who has been a fashion icon since the year 2000. She is very well known for wearing revealing clothing and making a statement; she did this at the snatch premiere where she wore a pink dress (Tonks, 2014) and drove a new trend for showing skin and embracing your body. As stated by Vogue in 2016 “Dare to flash your shoulders, your abs or you décolletage? This is the season to embrace exposure and make it your own” (Vogue, 2016), the trend for showing skin is something that has never died out. Britney spears and Ashton Kutcher became the driving force behind a new trend within the 2000s when they stepped out in Von Dutch Trucker hats, creating a new revolution of headwear. The hat comes from the big rig drivers and became a huge fashion trend as people wanted to dress like Hank Hill (Babcock, 2015).

Kim Kardashian is one of the biggest fashion icons today, she started out as Paris Hiltons stylist and has worked her way up the fashion industry to become the fashion icon that we see today, she is best known for enhancing her curves and wearing nudes. Kim claims that Kanye West has made her fashionable, they are one of the most fashionable celebrity couples taking the best dressed couple title at the 2016 Met Gala where they wore coordinated Balmain outfits (Vogue, 2016).

Music & Cinema

I

n the early 2000s dubstep appeared, emerging from garage music, this transition can be seen within fashion with a sporty look beginning to take over the music dance scene. Artists such as Kanye west, Rihanna and Beyoncé are seen as fashion icons in the industry. Over the years we have seen collaborations made between brands and the artists connecting music to fashion in a very direct way. Kanye West introduced the ‘oversized tee’ to the fashion scene, which because a huge fashion trend in the 2000s. It was featured in some of his first music videos. The t-shirt created a lot of controversy, as it was associated with drug dealers and people who were stereotypically African American. The oversized ‘tee’ was banned in clubs and used to identify someone who was up to no good (Babcock, 2015). Kanye also started the ‘popped’ collar polo top trend, which he was featured wearing in his first album in 2004. Beyoncé is another artists who is a big influence on fashion, her video advert for Ivy Park reflects her music, ‘before I perform I go back to that park’ linking her clothing line to her performing. 4

D

uring the 2000s the series of films ‘Cheetah Girls’ was released, with the first one being released in 2003 and the final one in 2006, Cheetah Girls was the film of the 2000s with teenage girls idolizing the characters and their fashion. With this film came the new love for the tracksuit as the girls in the film featured a personalised tracksuit creating the ultimate ‘squad goals’ (Corvino, 2015). Although the trend has been present throughout the 2000s it began to die out as the years went by. Today we see a very recent return of the tracksuit with it appearing on the 2016 runways, the tracksuit today is thought to be wore by those who are ‘powerful’ and ‘badass’ as stated in a recent article by Vogue (Connor, 2015).

Art T

he Bauhaus modernist art movement of patterns and shapes has been seen reflected in fashion throughout the 2000s, Hussein Chalayan uses the Bauhaus Principe of function over form, making it hard to see a distinction between art and fashion. A prime example of this was in his 2013 spring/summer collection where you saw the clean lines, colour and geometrical forms (Sylvuavdl, 2013). Mondrian’s 1930 composition of ‘red yellow and blue’ has been used as inspiration for many different designers (Bowles, 2009). It was first scene used by Yves Saint Laurent in a collection he named directly after the artist ‘Mondrian’ creating a tribute to the artist. In 2012 Forever21 took inspiration from the Yves Saint Laurent Mondrian inspired dress almost creating a copy of the dress showing a reflection of the art work in recent fashion (Alexis, 2012).

Fashion & Technology T

hroughout the 2000s there has been a lot of Technological developments, YouTube was launched in 2005 and has been the top host for visual context for the past 10 years (Edwards, 2015). It has now become a platform for fashion; brands have a channel and post advertisement as well as exclusive videos. In 2002 fashion bloggers began to become popular on the Internet and the following year ‘glam media’ was founded; a company that contains lifestyle webpages and blogs (ifb, 2012). Over the course of the 2000s the blogger has developed and started working with magazines and brands to communicate with the consumer, the blogger has become someone that the consumer trusts and this is something that companies value.

N

ew Technology advances have enabled the fashion industry to expand on their ideas and create spectacular designs with no limits. This can be seen by the ‘Galaxy dress’ made by CuteCircuit. CuteCircuit is the first fashion label, which has created fashion wearable technology collections. The line Pret-a-Porter was launched in 2010 and is shown at New York fashion week, one of the garments the ‘Galaxy dress’ is part of the permanent “Fast forward: inventing the future” exhibit at the Museum of Science and Industry in Chicago (CuteCircuit, 2009). P

revious Olympic games did not have any effect on the fashion scene. However, when the Olympics came to London one of the fashion capitals, the Olympics imprinted itself on the catwalk in brands such as Alexander Wang and Marc Jacobs. They represented the Olympics with chosen sporty themes and fabrics (theindustrylondon). Leading on from the London Olympic games we are now faced with Rio 2016, Stella McCartney has designed the GB team kit. Her collaboration with addidas has become increasing more popular as fashionable sports clothing becomes more popular. Nike made a statement proclaiming that “leggings are the new denim” (Salter), if you wear high-end sports clothes you are making a fashion statement and showing your status.

World Events. I

n 2009 the recession hit the UK, value retailers survived with the consumer look ing for a bargain. People did not stop spending there money on clothes they just did not spend as much, due to this sales soared at Primark rising by 16% (Poulter, 2012). “It seems wet weather and a damp Economy cant wash away out enthusiasm for a bargain” (Poulter, 2012), Primark snatched shoppers away from up market competitors like Marks and Spencer’s. Primark creates designer lookalike products at a bargain price and this is something that the shopper’s love, they take ideas from the catwalk and create a cheap version for the masses enabling everyone to be able to wear all the luxury trends even when they are short for money. Following on from the idea of copying fashion trends fellow high-street brand Zara also does this; renowned for copying luxury brands such as Celine’s designs from the catwalk they are leaving the luxury brands unhappy (Rickey, 2014). During the recession as the consumer spending got lower, a lot of pressure has been put on retailer margins. Private labels have been able to adapt to the fast changes in the fashion trends and were able to be much more flexible to work around the recession and the new requirements (TE, 2009).

Remerging Trends

T

hroughout the 2000’s we have seen past trends remerging, a very significant trend that has remerged is the retro inspired high-waist swimwear once worn by Marilyn Monroe. Today we see the vintage silhouettes, embellishments and fits (Rachel, 2011) that we once saw making a unique and stylish swimsuit. Peplum dresses and tops have reoccurred in the 2000s taking inspiration from the 50s housewife where women were looking to integrate a feminine aspect into their clothing (Ashley, 2014). The style was featured in Dior’s “New Look” and was used to accentuate the hourglass shape of the body (Maxson, 2013). Chuck Taylors were popular with both men and women in the 90s, they are still worn and bought today from the popular brand ‘Converse’. High-waisted pants are a trend that has reoccurred from the 90s and the 70s disco age, they are a huge trend seen today due to the recent interest in vintage clothing (Taylor, 2013). A lot people wear them during the summer months, they are known as ‘Mom Jeans’.

Figure 13 - Marilyn Monroe

One of the biggest brands of the century was American Apparel catering for parents and the hipsters. They created the basics, which was attractive to the consumer who had been overwhelmed with the all over printed garments that other brands had been producing (Babcock, 2015). 12

L

ooking to the future of fashion, it seems that the industry is going to become highly dominated by technology. Fashion designers are going to explore further into the potential that technology gives us to create clothing and accessories, which are more beautiful and extravagant than ever before. Holograms are another recent development and will create a new revolution for shopping with the hassle of changing clothes being eliminated. They will be present in changing rooms enabling shoppers to try on clothes quick and easily (Guardian, 2014). The future of fashion also lies in 3D printing, “Scan it, print it, wear it” (Kinsella, 2016), most creative universities have a 3D printer for future generations to use and develop showing that they are going to be in our future.

The Future

A brand called Modeclix has already created a 3D printed clothing line, they are experimenting with 3D printing and there are a lot of developments to be made regarding comfort ability (Park, 2016). With the blogger taking off in the fashion industry, this is something that will only grow with more brands collaborating and working with bloggers to communicate to the consumer. Sustainability will be a huge contributor to the future of the fashion industry “Every time you spend money, you’re casting a vote for the kind of world you want.” (Lappe), some companies promote themselves as being sustainable but the contemporary consumer can see through this and want sustainability to be an industry standard, with this in mind designers are going to be focusing on creating systems and services (WGSN). With the brand BioCouture’s sustainable fashion catching on, sustainability is going to revolutionize the industry. 14

T

o conclude, fashion from the year 2000 to present day has been influenced heavily by a range of different aspects from the recent emerging advances in technology, to trends from the past. Fashion never stops and is a constant process of development with the future focused on technology and the blogger becoming a main marketing strategy, we are going to witness the industry moving to keep up with the ever changing consumer lifestyle; “Fashion goes in only one direction – forward (Wintour, A).
