Workshop Leader Info
public space Guidance:
How can disobedient spaces be explored to suggest alternative ways to support the assembly of young people in public space? We are interested in developing catalyst tools that will encourage young people to self initiate action; reclaiming public space. When completed by existing elements in the public realm, these toolkit parts transform from object into unplanned street furniture. We aim to probe the limits and rigidity around planning strategies in a playful manner.
•
Follow the Make @ Story Garden’s Covid-19 and social distancing guidelines.
•
Maximum 6 participants for the youth workshop; split in either groups of 2 or 3 people. Numbers can increase when compliant to future government guidelines.
•
Maximum 3 sets of toolkits, 6 copies of the worksheets and 3 manuals needed; 1 copy per group.
•
Essential equipment; pen and pencil. Recommended equipment; smartphone with camera and clipboard.
•
During ‘Street Furniture’ exercise, participants are encouraged to explore Somers Town independently. However, Workshop Leader(s) can walk around the area during the exercise to monitor activities.
Workshop Goals: Aims to encourage young people to think differently about how they use, assemble in and adapt public spaces, while fostering connections with Make @ Story Garden. Timetable: 0-5min: Introduction / Read through ‘Participant Info’ sheet with participants, explain the goals and outcomes of the workshop and outline the planned schedule.
15-75min: Street Furniture / Allocate 1 toolkit and manual per group. Explain corresponding worksheet and send participants into Somers Town public spaces. 75-90min: Reflection / Workshop members return back to Make @ Story Garden. Participants complete the corresponding worksheet and clean any equipment and materials used before leaving site.
YOUTH
Completed worksheets create a log of responses to young people’s experiences and wants from London’s public space and help identify potential areas of improvement.
•
Once reopened, future intentions are to connect workshop with Somers Town Youth Club. Relationship could develop into creating spaces for outdoor youth services.
•
Feedback on most succesful toolkit parts hopes to develop toolkit and prototype improved components.

We are interested in developing catalyst tools that will encourage young people to self initiate action; reclaiming public space. When completed by existing elements in the public realm, these toolkit parts transform from object into unplanned street furniture. We aim to probe the limits and rigidity around planning strategies in a playful manner. We intentionally used a basic material palette in order to develop an accessible toolkit that young people can use and reapply in different locations.
