LAST WEEK WAS ONE OF THE BEST NIGHTS THAT I HAVE HAD WITH THE WASPS and Matthew Fawcett stepping down from running the club was met with a lot of sadness as they have been corner stones for basketball in this area for so long. But a great opportunity was put in front of Ann Hughes and myself as we both have similar

We want you all to know that you are in the Wasps nest from the minute you walk through the door untill the moment you leave. We want to provide the best tuck shop, entertainment, atmosphere and fan experience that you can get. I look forward to taking on Sefton tonight in what should be another thrilling game and with your support I know we can get another win. Sting City! HULL WASPS VS SEFTON STARS 5

acArt leads the charge as Wasps upset the Trailblazers. Saturday presented a classic in Wasps history as the Home side managed to claim a two point win against Derby Trailblazers. The game started and the pace and speed of the visiting Derby team was on full display. They made the majority of their first quarter shots and hurt the Wasps time and again from the 3 point line. The Wasps scrambled as they tried to keep with the athletic Trailblazers, changing their defensive set which really didn’t hurt the momentum of Derby. The end of the first quarter had the Wasps trailing by 12. The second quarter continued the same way as the first with Derby getting what they wanted. Coach Coulson called a timeout made some changes and the Wasps came out a different side. At this point in the game the Wasps had fallen behind by 18 points, in stepped Matt MacArt. With the slick passing of his teammates and a shooting display which was nothing short of sensational MacArt went on a 13 point run and got the Wasps within touching distance. Add to the onslaught Jarret Akpoveta and Sean Knight’s baskets and the Wasps had brought it back to within a point. The squad had also

received a boost from John Kelsey stepping back into the squad for this game and the veteran point guard showed why he is so highly rated. The second half was a tense affair with Derby again getting the better of the early exchanges. The quick guard play of the visitors proved difficult for the Wasps as they tried to maintain the play they had established in the second quarter. Jordache Akpoveta and Chris Goalby tightened up their defensive efforts

point lead. Derby managed to make this a 2 point game and with a Wasps turnover a timeout was called with Derby having possession down by two points with 6 seconds on the clock. Derby inbounded the ball and got a wide open shot which was fired towards the basket the crowd went into silence as the ball looped towards the basket. The ball bounced off the back of the rim and buzzer had sounded with the Wasps upsetting Derby and winning the game by 2 points, 82 -80.

THE WASPS TRAILED BY A SMALL MARGIN AS THEY HEADED INTO A TENSE FOURTH QUARTER on the guards and the Wasps managed to close the gap. The Wasps trailed by a small margin as they headed into a tense fourth quarter. The Wasps faced an 8 point deficit early in the fourth quarter this time the efforts of Matt Fawcett and assists from Sean Knight and MacArt paid off as Fawcett hit two Threes complimented by another deep three from MacArt. The scene was set as the Wasps held a slender 4

MVP Matt MacArt had a career high 40 points to lead the Wasps with Jarret Akpoveta and Sean Knight scoring 13 and 11 respectively. Head Coach James Coulson spoke about the important win. “We knew that if we could slow down their shooters we would be able to work our way back into the game. We knew we could exploit our size difference and due to the defensive efforts of the squad we were able to turn around the game.”

yke College Basketball team continue to roll through the local competition as they prove they are the best college basketball team in the region. The college team who are affiliated to the Wasps have been steady this season and have been guided by the experienced duo of Wasps forward Matt MacArt and long time coach Neil Kelsey. “We want to provide a situation for the players where they can not only be successful in basketball but in the classroom too.” MacArt said. The American player also complimented the influence of Neil Kelsey on the squad and himself. “Neil knows a great deal about the game and I love talking basketball with him because he gets it. It really is no surprise why Wyke are the team everybody wants to beat. The Wyke team will be hoping to continue their winning ways through the second half of the season. REBECCA CARTER SITS DOWN WITH WASPS SMALL FORWARD AT TRAINING THIS WEEK

ith the second half of the season well under way, we caught up with the team. Sat in the Andrew Marvell Gym where game days are held, the team are hard at work training in preparation for this week’s home game against Sefton Stars. Managing to steal a few minutes between drills we chatted to Stuart McAra to see how he’s finding the transition from the Premier Team to National League Division Three.

12 HULL WASPS VS SEFTON STARS

MCARA, WHO PLAYS THE SMALL FORWARD POSITION, HAS PLAYED FOR THE WASPS FOR FOUR YEARS AND HAS MADE HIS WAY THROUGH THE DEVELOPMENT TEAMS BEFORE BEING PICKED TO PLAY THIS SEASON FOR THE NATIONAL LEAGUE TEAM. WE ASKED HOW HE WAS ENJOYING HIS STEP UP TO THE TEAM?

A

“Very much so. It’s a whole new level of players that quality is so high this season. It makes for better training sessions and I am constantly learning new things and improving.” It’s great to be part of the team and I’ve made some really good friends out of it.”

HOW DO YOU THINK THE SEASON HAS GONE SO FAR?

A

“It’s been a really tough start for us. With moving venues at the beginning of the season and having a complete rework of the team, it’s proven difficult for us. We struggled to gel as quickly as we would have liked and needed to, but now we have found our stride and have really started to work as a team.”

DO YOU THINK ANYTHING NEEDS TO BE IMPROVED UPON?

A

“I think, if anything, we need to improve our communication. We need to be much more vocal on court. If we sound in control and communicator with each other we appear that way to the opposition. I also think we need to pass inside to our big guys more. I would also personally like to improve and get some more minutes on court.”

HOW DO YOU SEE THE REMAINDER OF THE SEASON GOING?

A

“I see it going really well. We’ve started to gel more on court and work better as a team. We have a lot more fluidity to our game now and everyone is finding their stride.”

WHAT’S THE BEST PART ABOUT GAME DAY?

A

“It has to be coming away with a win, but generally it’s the experience of playing against top level teams. It’s about the teamwork too, we’ve really grown as a team and it shows in our support of each other.”

WHO’S YOUR MVP SO FAR AND WHY?

A

“Matt MacArt has to be my MVP. He’s in good form and has played well consistently. He’s brought a new level to the team and it’s good to be able to play with him and learn along side him.”

WHO’S YOUR MOST IMPROVED ON THE TEAM?

A

“Phil Ainsworth has to be my choice for Most Improved. His level of improvement is phenomenal when you consider the standard that he is now being asked to play. He has managed to improve vastly in such a short space of time.”

WHAT’S BEEN YOUR PERSONAL HIGHLIGHT OF THE SEASON SO FAR?

A

“My personal highlight has to be scoring 8 points in around 4 minutes against Derby away. It was a great game for me and probably my best of the season so far.” HAVING MADE A FANTASTIC TRANSITION FROM THE PREMIER TEAM THROUGH TO NATIONAL LEAGUE DIVISION THREE, MCARA IS SET TO WORK HARDER THAN EVER TO ENSURE HIS SPOT ON THE TEAM FOR THE NEXT SEASON.
