Packed into this issue, we have six fantastic tutorials with varying levels of difficulty. We have a very cute nativity scene from The Yellow Bee Cake Company, royal iced knitted mitten cookies from Honeycat Cookies and a festive snowman from Crafty Confections. I am very excited that Elisa Strauss, from Confetti Cakes, has contributed an excellent tutorial to the magazine which, I am sure you will agree with me, is too cute for words. Last and by no means least, we have Rouvelee’s Creations showing us how to model the perfect little elf for Christmas. To continue the festivities, we have a great photographic step-by-step recipe for milk chocolate, prune and Armagnac stollen from the wonderful, award winning pastry chef, Will Torrent.
This month, our afternoon tea expert has been for a special tea... in the clouds... (yes, quite literally!) at the Shangri-La Hotel’s TĪNG Lounge at The Shard in London; one of the best places she has been to. I wasn’t able to join Jen on this occasion and am super jealous as everything looked divine! As if the celebratory season of Christmas wasn’t enough, I’m also really happy to share with you an overview of the Cake Masters Magazine Awards 2014. Full of glamour, entertainment and cake – it was an amazing night! We tell you all about the winners, with lots of pictures from the event. Organising this special event was a real team effort so I’d like to thank everyone involved, from the judges, to the support on the day and to Yawar, Director of Cake Masters Magazine, who really ensured the event became a reality! This year has been an amazing journey for Cake Masters Magazine; having only launched to newsstands in April of this year, we have grown substantially and have had the honour of featuring and sharing the stories of amazing cake artists in every single issue. Thank you to everyone who has supported us on this journey, especially Steve, Richard, our subscribers and all our cakey friends. Merry Christmas and best wishes for 2015!

Cake Masters Magazine Awards 2014 Special Feature
Re
PR
An atmosphere of nervous excitement filled the air for the Cake Masters Magazine Awards 2014, with finalists on the verge of discovering if they’ve won and all of the Cake Masters team hoping the night would go as well as we’d planned. The apprehension was quickly dispelled by the arrival of hosts Rose Dummer, AKA Rosie Cake-Diva, and Rudy Martinez, of Man Bakes Cake. Their effervescent chemistry created a buzz in the room that matched the anticipation for the first ever Cake Masters Awards presentation. It truly was the Oscars of the cake world, from the glamour of everyone’s attire, to the tears filled acceptance speeches and the treat filled goody bags that accompanied everyone home. In a room full of industry professionals, cake decorating icons and Eddie Spence MBE himself, everyone left feeling starstruck!

Christmas in Frostington Charity Collaboration
Christmas in Frostington is the follow up Christmas Charity Collaboration to the 2013 Bake A Christmas Wish (BACW). We interview Samantha Emmerson to find out what is in store for 2014. Tell us about the background to the collaboration The response to BACW was overwhelming and incredibly humbling; we enabled two children to have their wishes granted via Make-A-Wish which was the best reward for all involved in the project. So it seemed natural, and somewhat crazy too, to organise another charity collaboration for Christmas 2014. This year, I decided to support three main charities, one charity from each of the main continents that our international collaboration represents. We wanted everyone to be able to engage with and relate to our project, and for different types of charity to be supported. • UK based charity – Alzheimer’s Society So many families and individuals are touched by different types of dementia and the Alzheimer’s Society works to improve the quality of life of people affected by dementia. • USA based charity – Icing Smiles Icing Smiles is a non-profit organisation that provides custom celebration cakes and other treats to families impacted by the critical illness of a child.
18
• Australia based charity – Australian Melanoma Research Foundation The Australian Melanoma Research Foundation is a not-for-profit organisation established by a group of dedicated volunteers to provide funding for research into the causes, prevention and cure of Melanoma and Skin Cancer.
in the village pub. We also have a village mansion, Frostington House, which you can have a peek inside at the grand party, the children hunting for hidden treats and our very own village Scrooge hiding away from the merriment. If you’re very lucky you might even see Father Christmas and his reindeer flying up high in the sky…
Frostington is a quintessentially British village scene set in the early evening of Christmas Eve, as the shoppers clamour to gather last minute gifts and children play in the snow as their excitement builds waiting for Father Christmas to visit. There is a fairground and an ice rink, a village market and shops and even a few people having a cheeky tipple
How can readers support this cause or donate? To fundraise this year, we have created tutorial and recipe booklets alongside the main village. Each sugar artist on board has contributed to these booklets with step by step tutorials on how to make some of the village elements.
Tell us about Frostington Christmas in Frostington is an international collaboration of over 150 sugar artists from all corners of the globe. As a group, the focus was on creating a single showpiece that everyone could contribute to, instead of individual, stand alone pieces. It was from this idea that the village of Frostington was formed. It is always important for me to highlight that, amongst all the flurry of collaborations in the cake world, our collaboration is completely unique. We are the only collaboration to bring everyone together, new sugar artists and more established sugar artists, with the sole purpose of fundraising for charity.
Each element of the village has been created from sugar with each artist contributing a piece of the village - from the characters to the buildings and scenery. All the pieces have been created out of sugar or an edible medium and they represent the individual styles of the artists themselves. Some have been modelled and some pieces are hand painted scenes. These elements have then been collated together electronically to form the main village scene. Not everyone has created a showpiece, some have given up their time and expertise in other areas of the collaboration such as administration and photography related skills, which are essential to this project!

ISSUE 27 | DECEMBER 2014
Charity Collaboration We have also included tutorials that can be used throughout the year, including some outstanding tutorials using wafer paper and gelatin as well as modelling and hand painting techniques. The recipes that we feature are ones that the bakers use regularly themselves and may even be trade secrets! These booklets are downloadable and available online only.
We are also fundraising by having Worldwide and UK based giveaways. Our prizes include a beautiful bracelet and ring, kindly donated by Fendi, signed books by Will Torrent, gift vouchers, Paul Bradford yearly membership, Cake Masters Magazine online subscription, various baking and decorating kits and goodies to name just a few. The giveaways will run for the whole month of December 2014 and will close on New Years Eve, with the winners being drawn on New Years Day. The tutorial and recipe booklets will continue to be on sale throughout early 2015. All monies received will then be spilt in equal proportions to our chosen charities and delivered by our charity coordinators on each continent. Booklets and tickets will be available to purchase online only via our website and Facebook pages.
Tell us about a few of the pieces that have been made There are so many outstanding and incredible pieces that have been created that to pick a favourite is very hard! Each piece is so personal to the sugar artist that created it; we even had a baking collaboration within the collaboration for a piece! We have a blog page on our website so I’ll ask that question to the readers. Tell us your favourite pieces on the blog page and on our Facebook page and if you purchase the booklets, it would be wonderful to see anything that you have created from them! 150 artists is a lot of people to manage! How did you manage? Organising a collaboration is a huge task. I learnt an awful lot from the experience last year that I was able to bring on board for this year. I have the most wonderful admin team whom I wouldn’t be without so a huge thank you goes to Dina, Suzy, Liszi, Kate, Deb, Sarah and everyone else behind the scenes. We also have a dedicated web designer on board, Ryan Burke, who is a 3rd Year student from the University of Surrey who has given up his time inbetween his studies and dissertation to design our website, for which we are very
grateful – thanks Ryan! Time is never your friend! No matter how organised you are, time just seems to run away, but the rewards are immense. I have found lifelong friends through both of the Christmas Collaborations. It is so lovely to see it all coming together, seeing new sugar artists meeting more established names, everyone helping each other and picking each other up when the confidence wobbles strike. And, of course, it is bringing everyone together to raise money for charity that makes it all worthwhile and leaves a warm glow inside, just in time for Christmas. Please support us by purchasing our giveaway tickets and tutorial and recipe booklets thank you!
