The Benders of Calabasas

I

t’s rare in Southern California to find a family that can boast having three generations living in the same community. Those that do, like the Benders, who have raised their families here in Calabasas, know that it’s a lifestyle that would be hard to duplicate anywhere else. For the three generations of Benders currently residing in our fair city, Calabasas is and always will be the community they call home. For Jason and Aliza Bender, the decision to make the move from Woodland Hills to Calabasas was an easy one. The family currently lives in the beautiful Oaks development, and they know where their priorities lie. “We wanted to raise our children in a neighborhood where they could be part of a community,” says Jason. “I grew up with that neighborhood experience and wanted the same experience for my family.” Their children’s futures and a new community dictated a move to Calabasas 10 years ago. Jason regards the solid public school system as one of the contributing factors as to why they chose Calabasas.

20

Calabasas Style

“We originally lived three houses out of LVUSD and wanted to relocate to Calabasas to have the option of attending a good neighborhood public school,” he says. “LVUSD was the best choice.” So, Aliza, Jason and the kids joined the rest of Jason’s immediate family, including Jason’s parents, in Calabasas. Jason’s dad, Martin, volunteers at the sheriff’s station, and his mom, Gloria, is an avid Calabasas Country Club card player. There is also Jason’s younger brother Brett, who is in advertising; his sister-in-law Lorin, a therapist; and their kids. The fact that they all live in the area makes quality family time a convenience. Aliza and Jason’s three children -- Dylan (15), Luke (13) and Joley (7) -- are very active in the Calabasas community. Dylan is a student at Calabasas High School, where he plays on the volleyball team and enjoys playing basketball. Luke, who attends A.C. Stelle Middle School, plays for West Hills Baseball and on a travel baseball team called the Iron Pigs. Joley, a student at Bay Laurel, plays soccer and softball and is active in gymnastics and

Aliza, meanwhile, is also active in Calabasas, where she helps organize the Bay Laurel Poker Tournament and enjoys volunteering in her children’s classrooms. Originally from South Africa, Aliza immigrated with her family to beautiful and sunny San Diego. After graduating from UCLA, she did marketing in the entertainment industry and also worked for Pfizer, a pharmaceutical company. These days, her most important title is that of “Mom.” With three kids who constantly need to be in three different places at the same time, most of her time is spent organizing schedules and playing taxi. She is thankful that she is able to be there for their children in their formative years so she can help them become humble, spiritual, grateful adults who will make the world a better place.

theater. She follows her passion for dancing by taking classes at Dance Dimensions and Keith Allen’s studio. Jason’s business takes him all over Southern California. “While being groomed at a division of Grey Advertising, I had been asked to help consult on a new business venture in the Valley,” he shares. “I ended up forming In Focus Advertising in 1995 and, shortly after, picked up Pepperdine University, a client with an incredible reputation to build from for over 12 years.” He is also a board member of America I Care.

The Benders appreciate the close community in Calabasas and having activities where there are other kids their own kids’ ages. “Our boys can walk to the local park to meet their friends for a pickup football game,” says Jason. “They can go to the Agoura Hills/ Calabasas Community Center for a basketball game and walk to Jersey Mike’s across the street. Malibu is also very close if we want to relax and have fun while escaping the heat. Our active boys can take a hike in our community. Our daughter Joley can meet her friends after school to swim in the community pool. Halloween is always a good time – the streets in the neighborhood are closed off. Many families gather and have a great time!” The Benders also love to go to the Calabasas Farmer’s Market every weekend for great local produce and products and good family fun.

Calabasas itself plays a big role in Jason’s business. “My local clients include Fazio Cleaners, Polacheck’s Jewelers, Fence Factory, The Sleep Shoppe, Wink Optometry and Beauty Collection,” he says. “When I was working for larger national companies, I didn’t have the same passion as I do for helping small to medium clients grow their business and impact the lives of their employees.” Jason’s business has grown in size and scope. Jason was recognized on the Valley Business Journal’s “Forty Under Forty” list of the Valley’s most successful people under 40 years old. Outside of the office, Jason is involved with the Las Virgenes Chapter of the Young Presidents’ Organization. In addition, he has been the manager and coach for the West Hills Baseball all-star team, as well as his son’s team, the Iron Pigs. An avid poker player, he regularly plays in the Calabasas Poker Tournament, visits Vegas every year for March Madness and participates in father-son fantasy football. He plays on the record-shattering “Dads,” a Calabasas recreational league basketball team and the team with the most wins in Calabasas rec-league history. He also plays on the Hit’N Chickens softball team, as well as at ultimate sports fantasy camp and in a weekly pick-up game at the Oaks.

Obviously, the Benders are very sports oriented. “When the boys are not playing sports,” Aliza shares, “they’re going to watch the Dodgers, Clippers, Lakers, UCLA or Kings.” Jason, Aliza and their children are lucky enough to be able to travel to participate in or watch sporting events. Dylan had the unique opportunity to participate in a basketball tournament in Philadelphia, which gave the family the opportunity to explore the city. Luke and his team, the Iron Pigs, came in fifth out of 105 teams in the U.S. at a tournament at Cooperstown Dreams Park. The family was able to visit the famous National Baseball Hall of Fame and explore New York City, one of their favorite spots. Lifelong memories were made on a voyage to London and Paris, when the couple took their sons on a work trip and to a European “football” game. Other favorite family vacation locations include Mexico, Yosemite and Hawaii. The couple has also visited Aliza’s home country of South Africa. One day, they hope to share the experience of a South African safari with their children. For Jason and Aliza, traveling is a wonderful way to keep their kids open-minded to experience and help them to learn about different cultures -- all while showing them how great it is to live in Calabasas. n

HOW TO GET THAT

SUMMER GLOW The Lux 23689 Calabasas Rd. Calabasas 818.225.8264 Hours: 9 a.m. – 8 p.m.

By Beth Cone Kramer

S

ummer in Southern California means pool parties, beach days and maybe a getaway to Cabo or beyond. How can you get the glow of summer when you’re spending days at the office or schlepping kids to numerous activities?

The former Luxury Tan & Makeovers in the Calabasas Courtyard has relaunched under new management as “The Lux” and is revolutionizing the world of tanning. With prices that can’t be beat and state-of-the-art equipment, they hold the key to the perfect summer glow.

32

Calabasas Style

“The Lux offers a variety of ways to add the glow of summer without spending days on a beach towel or lounge chair.”

The Lux offers a variety of ways to add the glow of summer without spending days on a beach towel or lounge chair. The Lux is the only salon in the world to offer St. Tropez Rapid Tan in the custom VersaSpa spray machine, which allows clients to shower in one to three hours after treatment instead of the usual seven to 24 hours. Select from custom spray tans, spray tans in the Versa Machine or state-of-the-art tanning beds. The Lux is one of the few places in L.A. to offer the Hydration Station, which is beneficial to people who tan. The Hydration Station is a revolutionary system for tanners that provides your skin with warm, topical, soothing lotion, great for prolonging the life of your tan and improving the texture of your skin. You can even skip that spin class because the process burns 200 to 300 calories per session! The unique system incorporates Hydrofusion, a proprietary blend of radiant heat and steam; LED color technology; Oxygen Science™ products for vitamin and botanical diffusion; and a vibratory bed, all in an advanced capsule. This powerful combination promotes a deep, dark tan, leaving skin soft, supple and beautiful. To rejuvenate the skin, try the salon’s red light therapy, a skin rejuvenation system that improves skin tone and texture, helps reduce pore size and encourages vibrant, healthier skin while reducing wrinkles and signs of aging. Red light therapy uses technology developed by NASA to penetrate the skin to a depth of 8 to 10 mm, which encourages the cells to naturally stimulate the production of collagen and elastin, which provide the desired anti-wrinkle effect. The red light therapy also stimulates blood circulation and repairs elastin fibers in the tissue that help keep skin firm. The amount and quality of collagen typically decline with age, smoking and drinking. It’s like real-life photoshop!

If acne is a problem, the red light therapy removes acne-causing bacteria. Years of sun exposure may have left you with age spots and sun damage, which may also be removed by the red light. Fine lines, wrinkles, broken capillaries, wounds and scars can also be treated with the red light. Treatments work best over eight to 12 weeks. If maintenance treatments are discontinued, lines will gradually return, but additional treatments will help. Do you wish that your La Prairie facial creams or your Chanel cosmetics lasted longer? Beauty Angel Red Light Therapy uses a light in special active ranges that is absorbed by your skin cells (fibroplasts) so it boosts the skin’s own production of collagen, elastin and hyaluronic acid, reducing fine wrinkles and leaving skin tauter and smoother. As a bonus, the treatment increases absorption of cosmetics. n

If the kids are techie-inclined, check out iD Tech. This online company teaches the kids how to write code. If they are interested in gaming and how games are created, this might just be the ticket. You can find them at idtech.com. For younger kids, check out Magic Tree House, which offers great puzzles, games and quizzes. Toporopa is an excellent site for learning about the world. Technologically Advanced Dental Care in a Spa-Like Environment

ew people look forward to spending time in a dentist’s chair. While the majority can summon the courage to get their regular check-ups, treatments and cleanings, fear and anxiety prevent millions of people from seeking proper dental care.

Dr. Tania Baker, DDS, understands all of this and is determined to alleviate the fear and anxiety for those who have put off seeing a dentist for a while. She also wants to take away the guilt and embarrassment for people who haven’t stepped inside of a dental office in years. “I want my patients to love their new smile and enjoy the process,” says Dr. Baker. To that end, she designed her office at the Calabasas Dental Spa with an ambiance and décor that provides a serene and spa-like setting, and she created a dental practice with a delightful balance of technologically advanced dental care and spa pampering. The Dental Spa, located on the top floor of a two-story building on

36

Calabasas Style

Las Virgenes Road, is filled with natural light and overlooks the hills. Instead of your typical crowded waiting room, patients relax in a private spa room with a full-body and foot massage chair; soothing music; warm, scented towels; and aromatic candles. In this very serene atmosphere, patients are also pampered with a lavender paraffin hand treatment. “Normal dental anxiety can raise patients’ blood pressure and increase the production of adrenaline,” Dr. Baker explains. “Massages can help to offset these undesirable effects.” The Dental Spa also has new, state-of-the-art dental chairs, where patients can enjoy music, view their favorite show or even watch a movie on Netflix while snuggling under a blanket during their treatment. “Our practice is devoted to holistic dental care, meaning that we don’t just treat a patient’s teeth, but we treat the patient as a whole,” Dr. Baker says. She strives to develop a warm and open rapport with every patient she treats. Her goal is to change the way patients feel about going to the dentist as well as to change the way they feel about their smile. Not only is she highly educated,

with more than 30 years of experience, but she also has a unique way of making patients feel cared for and important. “I take great pride in focusing on each individual and treating them with great respect in regard to their time and how they feel before, during and after their visit. Dr. Baker graduated in 1980 from an academy of dental medicine in Europe and received her California dental degree through Loma Linda University. She specializes in general dentistry, with an emphasis in cosmetic, biological and minimally invasive, biocompatible dentistry using the latest in technology. This includes the use of infrared cameras for early detection of decay, Logicon digital, X-ray diagnostics, lasers for LANAP nonsurgical gum treatments and BIOLASE hard-tissue lasers for the treatment of decay. She also offers her patients a variety of other laser dental treatments, from laser teeth whitening to painless, no-drill laser fillings. In addition, her practice offers CEREC CAD/CAM technology for one-visit crowns, sleep apnea and CPAP-intolerance treatments; biocompatibility testing for dental material; oral cancer screenings with the latest diagnostic testing; Invisalign; and a full range of aesthetic services, from simple smile lifts and veneers to full-mouth rehabilitation. With a true artist’s passion, Dr. Baker has created an environment where anyone who walks through her doors can have a relaxing and life-enhancing experience. n Calabasas Dental Spa 4937 Las Virgenes Rd., #203 Calabasas 818.880.5520 calabasasdentalspa.com

Supplements

Beauty Boosting By Anna D Guanche, MD Bella Skin Institute

E

very morning I throw a handful of about 25 vitamins and supplements into my mouth and gulp them down with water. Breakfast. This is not advisable for everyone, but in short, I believe in supplements! To be clear, not every medical professional loves them. Supplements are controversial in the medical field, and some can even interact with medications you are taking, so I’ll say this: Please ask your personal medical doctor before taking something new. For years, I was extremely skeptical. Having been trained in traditional Western

40

Calabasas Style

The inside-out approach to skin health

medicine, I felt a multivitamin plus iron and calcium was good, but all of the other stuff -- a gimmick! Then, one day, I tried glucosamine, and after years of a swollen knee due to an injury, I suddenly felt better. I take it every day, and if I miss it, my body really lets me know. But we aren’t talking knees, are we? We’re talking skin! The point is that I became more open-minded about trying different supplements. As it turns out, newly discovered, plantderived antioxidants can prevent and reverse signs of aging, while marine extracts can encourage healthier hair and nails. And some things that have been

around for many years are now being studied for their anti-aging effects. I will touch on my personal favorites, and share my experience with them.

Glucosamine I’m convinced! Collagen II is the common denominator between skin and cartilage, so with the decreased inflammation in my knee, I take this daily and notice that it is also benefiting my skin. We mostly know about glucosamine as it is used for joint health, but there’s growing evidence that n-acetyl-glucosamine can lighten areas of increased skin pigmentation, make fine

lines and wrinkles less apparent and offer some protection against skin damage due to its anti-inflammatory effect. Cell culture studies show that adding glucosamine to skin cells boosts the synthesis of hyaluronic acid, an important regulator of skin hydration. Hyaluronic acid levels decline with age. This partially explains why mature skin is dryer and has a rougher texture than more youthful skin. Hyaluronic acid is also involved in wound healing, and younger skin with more hyaluronic acid heals more rapidly and is less likely to scar. Hyaluronic acid levels in skin decline with age. As an aside, my favorite filler, Juvederm® is composed of cross-linked hyaluronic acid.

Heliocare

®

This is a fascinating new supplement derived from a South African fern. The fern -- polypodium leucotomos -protects itself against harsh UV exposure with multiple compounds. Now, this fern extract is available in capsule form. When taken 30 minutes before sun exposure, it is proven to provide an SPF of about 8 (repeat after three hours if still in the sun). It does not substitute for sunscreen, but will help with “missed spots” that inevitably happen at the beach. Taken daily, it could prevent chronic sun damage that occurs over years of incidental sun exposure. There is strong scientific support for the supplement’s skin-protecting ability. Heliocare® dramatically reduced the incidence of sunburn as well as damage to collagen and elastin, the fibers that keep skin smooth and firm, in two published Harvard Medical School studies. That’s because it is particularly effective against the “aging” UVA rays that most sunscreens don’t protect against completely. It could prevent brown spots, wrinkles and even skin cancer. This would be a great supplement for surfers or golfers to take daily.

Viviscal PRO® There are so many hair-growth supplements and snake oils on the market. I don’t have a hair “problem” per se, but I do have a yearly seasonal shed. A few months ago I decided to try Viviscal with absolutely zero expectation. I just added it to the “pile” of vitamins I gulp down daily, which means I only took it once a day instead of twice. After a few weeks, I had noticeably shinier hair and many new tapered, regrowing hairs. My manicurist noticed that my nails were growing

faster. I was impressed with the results. Viviscal encourages hair growth using a proprietary marine complex. Known as AminoMar C, it contains a combination of marine protein, minerals and vitamins that help regenerate new cells and feed existing cells. A Scandinavian professor developed AminoMar C after isolating the key protein molecules of the Inuit’s protein-rich fish diet. Viviscal also contains vitamin C, silica and biotin, which further support healthy hair. But sorry, guys -- it promotes healthier hair that is already growing but is not known to correct male pattern baldness.

of animals by up to 20% -- prolonging their youthful character in the process. Scientific evidence now suggests that melatonin plays a crucial role in a variety of metabolic functions, including acting as an antioxidant (stronger than vitamin E) and providing neuroprotection, anti-inflammatory defense and immune system support. Because melatonin production reduces with age, experts believe that its decline contributes to both the aging process and a generalized deterioration of health. The benefits may be attributed to the regulation of circadian rhythms, day/night body cycles that determine cellular behavior.

Resveratrol

Beautiful, healthy skin is a function of what is going on both on the inside and the outside. You can help maintain and prevent skin aging with supplements. Of course, sun protection, de-stressing, exercising, drinking water, reducing alcohol intake and eliminating tobacco are a must. Once you have removed offending factors, you can optimize body function with supplements. My philosophy is that the cells should have what they need at their disposal. The rest gets filtered out. Of course, each individual has a different tolerance and a different response to supplements, so proceed with caution. Until we find Ponce De Leon’s fountain of youth, we must do the best we can. n

A few years ago, Harvard researchers reported extended lifespan and resilience in mice that were fed resveratrol. Since then, in the hopes of living a long and healthy life, I have been taking this supplement daily. This is not the type of supplement that changes things overnight. However, I suspect it has a cumulative effect over time. Resveratrol is a member of a group of plant compounds called polyphenols. These compounds are thought to have antioxidant properties, protecting the body against the kind of damage linked to increased risk for conditions such heart disease and diabetes. Resveratrol is found in the skin of red grapes, but other sources include peanuts and berries. Most resveratrol capsules sold in the U.S. contain extracts from the Japanese and Chinese knotweed plant Polygonum cuspidatum. Time will tell whether this supplement is effective, but large, reputable institutions have a strong, persistent interest and a myriad of ongoing studies attempting to elucidate all of the benefits of this compound. There is also a bit of debate on whether it really is bioavailable when taken orally, so a sublingual (under the tongue) version might be on the horizon.

Melatonin Melatonin is known as the “sleep hormone.” I wish I had discovered it sooner! After years of insomnia, this was the cure for me. It may not have the same profound and consistent result in everyone, but recent studies find that melatonin has many other positive effects on the body. The hormone melatonin produces a number of health benefits in terms of your immune system. It’s a powerful antioxidant and free radical scavenger that helps combat inflammation. SEND IN THE GOATS Earth-Friendly Weed Abatement By Pax Ansley

Y

ou are driving down Grey Rock Road in Agoura Hills. The sun is shining through your open window and summer is in the air. You look to your right and see beautifully designed landscapes, houses and swimming pools. Straight ahead is the lovely sloping curve of Morrison Ranch. Up the hill to your left is…a giant herd of 1,100 goats? No need to clean your sunglasses. Even though this is a sight not often seen in this part of Southern California, these goats have a very interesting and important job to do. These docile cuties are clearing brush and weeds from the hillsides. Not only is this a fun sight to see in your backyard, but choosing goats to clear unwanted, invasive species is a very eco-friendly alternative to noisy machines or harmful chemical herbicides. Goats were domesticated over nine thousand years ago and were one of the first animals to be domesticated by our ancestors. Unlike cattle, which are grass-eating grazers, goats are known as browsers. Browsers will go straight for brush and weeds 85 percent of the time, leaving behind grass and other desirable vegetation. By clearing out the brush and “forbs,” browsers are nature’s way of keeping ecosystems in balance. The goats are also clearing out dangerous dry brush, which is responsible for the destructive brush fires that Southern California knows all too well. Unlike heavy, noisy machinery, that can’t get to problem areas, or synthetic chemicals, that can poison the ground and nearby wildlife, these goats will not disturb the existing grass and soil and are actually contributing to the natural growth cycles of the local flora. In addition to being much gentler on the landscape, goats have a very unique mouth shape that is especially helpful in eliminating problem species. Because of the triangular shape of their mouths, the weeds are actually crushed and the seeds of the invasive species are no longer viable to start a new growth cycle. The goats also fertilize as they move, giving the remaining desired vegetation a nice, little boost. What kind of brush-clearing machine have you ever seen do that? This delicate symbiotic relationship between these goats and our neighborhood has to be what Mother Nature intended. They even have a unique enzyme in their digestive system that allows them to consume plants that are poisonous to other animals. Poison oak and poison ivy happen to be two of their favorite snacks! So, next year, around this time, if you happen to see a renegade goat loose in the streets of Agoura Hills, be careful not to hit him; just send him a thank you and a wave and continue on your way. n

Rule the Roost:

Raising Chickens in Your Backyard By Tammy Randall wood, ASID

I

t might seem a curious trend, but trend it has become! From urban settings to modern, upscale enclaves, more and more of us are embarking on the adventure of raising chickens in our backyards. The backyard flock is an extension of an urban farming movement that has gained popularity nationwide. Raising livestock and crops domestically helps us avoid the energy usage and carbon emissions typically associated with transporting food. This trend towards supporting locally grown food has become a bona fide movement with its own terminology. The word locavore,

defined by Merriam-Webster as “one who eats foods grown locally whenever possible,” was coined in 2005 in San Francisco by three women who hatched a plan to challenge Bay Area residents to eat only foods grown or harvested within a 100-mile radius of the city for an entire month. The Bay Area was up to the challenge, and the movement grew like basil in July. Locavore was named the 2007 Word of the Year by the Oxford American Dictionary! If, like me, you’re already on the bandwagon -- or even if you’re just thinking of jumping up here! -- there is a lot of infor-

mation to sort through. Each municipality has its own rules and regulations, but in California, many towns allow residents to keep a small number of chickens. According to municode.com, the City of Calabasas allows residents to keep up to three small animals (including birds, chickens, ducks and rabbits) per home. Zoning varies not just town to town, but neighborhood to neighborhood, so check with your local governing body to be sure you’re in compliance with the law. The popularity of backyard hen houses is growing, due in large part to a desire shared by many to reduce their reliance on eggs produced inhumanely on large commercial farms. This was a big factor for me in deciding to have my own hens, but I cannot deny that there are many other benefits to raising your own chickens. My garden explodes to life with the help of our own composted chicken manure, and our walled rose garden pulsates with a charm and joyful energy made possible by the cooing and clucking of our resident brood. If you’ve never tasted a fresh homegrown chicken egg, I promise you that the moment you do, you will never want anything else. With plump, dark-yellow yolks, they are much more flavorful than commercially grown eggs. According to Mother Earth News, homegrown eggs are reported to have seven times more beta carotene, two times more omega-3 fatty acids, three times more vitamin E, a third less cholesterol, a quarter less saturated fat, two thirds more vitamin A and four to six times more vitamin D than store-bought eggs. And, believe it or not, chickens are smart! I love watching them run to greet the dogs and sing and call when they see me approaching from far away. They are surprisingly entertaining and docile, and they can even be affectionate. For me, raising chickens creates a connection to our food source that

gives me a deeper appreciation of the animals that play a role in our circle of life. It is truly a priceless experience. As long as I can remember, I’ve wanted to have a quaint little coop and raise hens that could provide beautifully colored eggs. Until recently, most of my friends have raised their eyebrows when I’ve come clean about this lifelong desire, but that’s happening less and less these days. I’m sure they’re envisioning a hot mess of chicken wire and bird droppings, but it doesn’t have to be that way. A chicken dwelling can be designed to feel like an extension of the main house -- as modern or traditional as that might be. Our own little coop is designed in an authentic Spanish style to match our house. It is clad in smooth stucco with antique Spanish roof tiles, and the doors have been made from antique Provençal oak shutters from an old French barn. A 12inch square opening at one side of the coop, near the ground, connects to the protected outdoor area and allows the birds an easy way in and out. A mature olive tree stands just outside the coop and is encircled with wire fencing and aviary netting, which allows our hens to have a shaded run. In this protected area, they can scratch for insects and take happy dust baths.

Once we built the coop and created a secure outdoor enclosure, it was time to order the inhabitants. My two main criteria for the breeds in my flock were that they be friendly, docile birds and that they produce pretty, colored eggs. My first batch of chicks was comprised of Araucanas, Cuckoo Marans, Silkies, Buff Cochins, Partridge Cochins and Frizzles. I ordered them from one of the oldest hatcheries in the country: Murray McMurray in Webster City, Iowa. Like most hatcheries, live day-old chicks are shipped from

March through November in a minimumquantity of twenty five – enough little peeps to keep each other warm on their journey. Receiving that little box in the U.S. mail was a day I will never forget, and I keep that tiny box to show anyone who doesn’t believe me that this is how they come! It might not seem obviously glamorous, but I think there’s something luxurious about going out to the coop every morning and saying hello to “the girls.” Taking a few moments to commune with nature and being able to bring in delicious, organic eggs that are still warm from their nests certainly adds richness to our lives. There has never been a better time for becoming a chicken-raising hobbyist – no yolk (forgive me!). Great websites, blogs, newsletters, mail-order hatcheries and online resources are plentiful. Some of my favorite resources are: Murray McMurray Hatchery, mcmurrayhatchery.com; My Pet Chicken, mypetchicken.com; Clark Farm Chicken Coops, clarkfarmbusiness.com; and the newsletter “Chicken Keeping Secrets.” Until next time, here’s to creating your own Noble Spaces! n Tammy Randall Wood, ASID, is the founder and principal of Interior Archaeology. “The challenge,” shares Stein, “is to do whatever you can to reduce the estate tax while still maintaining the client’s standard of living. The value of working with wealth professionals is that they can apply strategies to avoid impacting cash flow while considering tax implications and family dynamics.”

Union Bank’s Jeffrey Stein on Planning for Wealth Succession By Beth Cone Kramer Photography by Marvin Steindler

I

f you’ve worked hard to grow your business or have achieved a certain level of financial success, planning for wealth transition is an important consideration. And while most of us aim to maximize our inheritance to children, grandchildren or a favorite charity, doing so in a tax-efficient manner can be challenging, especially while balancing cash flow needs and maintaining a certain lifestyle. Wealth strategist Jeffrey Stein, CFP®, CRC®, CLU®, ChFC®, leads a team of wealth professionals at The Private Bank at Union Bank to help high net worth individuals and couples do just that. “Often the situation we encounter is that clients perceive that their CPA and attorney have already completed an estate plan,” says Stein. “One solution we offer is to project a client’s financial picture up to 25 years into the future and then estimate the estate taxes at the time of their death. We also apply strategies to reduce estate tax and maximize what goes to heirs, while avoiding an impact on lifestyle and cash flow. Because sacrificing lifestyle just doesn’t make sense.”

Know Your Estate Tax Rates As you prepare for eventual transfer of wealth, it’s important to be aware of all estate taxes, such as the federal estate tax of 40 percent, due within nine months of death. There is, however, an exclusion of $5.43 million for individuals and $10.86 million for married couples in 2015. Unless there is a specific bequest at the first spouse’s death, there are no estate taxes. The surviving spouse can utilize the “unlimited marital deduction.” And “portability”

66

Calabasas Style

allows the surviving spouse to use both his/ her and the deceased spouse’s exclusion at the time of the second death. The estate above this exclusion amount is taxed at 40 percent. People with a net worth over the exclusion amount typically try to lessen the value of the estate by transferring some of the assets before death, generally by gifting and selling of assets to irrevocable trusts. California has no estate tax for property and assets held in the state of California. However, assets held elsewhere are taxed at that state’s rate. So, a beach home in Maui can be taxed at Hawaii’s very high estate tax rate, making it critical to ensure that heirs are left with enough liquid assets to pay these estate taxes.

Utilize Gifting For gifting, the annual exclusion amount in 2015 is $14,000 per recipient ($28,000 as a joint gift for married couples). This means that gifts over $14,000 are taxed 35 percent, paid by the gift giver not the recipient. Gift taxes on substantial gifts can be avoided by using “applicable exclusion gifting,” for which a gift tax return is filed but no tax is paid. The estate tax exclusion is then reduced by the amount of the gift. Often, clients can get valuation discounts on gifts or sales of assets that do not give the recipient a controlling interest. For example, a gift or sale of shares of a privately held business that is not large enough to give the new owner control of the business makes those shares less valuable. If the market value of the entire business, for

instance, is worth $10MM and 40 percent is gifted or sold to children, the value may be discounted below $4MM to reflect the lack of control. To demonstrate sound methodology it is always best for the grantor to get a professional business valuation and valuation discount analysis as close to the gifting date as possible. The sale of assets to a trust effectively “freezes” the size of the estate since all growth of the asset sold to the trust, as well as any income generated by the asset allocated to the ownership in the trust, is not included in the grantor’s estate.

Maintain Your Lifestyle “The challenge,” shares Stein, “is to do whatever you can to reduce the estate tax while still maintaining the client’s standard of living. The value of working with wealth professionals is that they can apply strategies to avoid impacting cash flow while considering tax implications and family dynamics.” Stein’s team of wealth professionals works to devise strategies specific to each client’s situation. He then recommends different strategies to the client’s CPA and attorney and goes over possible outcomes. This helps the attorney draft a trust that will achieve the goals of the estate. n

cLaren steals the show! Supercar Sunday is called that for a reason -- you never know what is going to be on display. From the rarest and most expensive of collector cars to the latest and greatest the world over, somehow they all end up at Supercar Sunday at the Westfield Promenade in Woodland Hills. One of the most exciting brands in the exotic car market is McLaren. With a pedigree that is indeed hard to beat, McLaren is cornering the market by offering a vehicle with supercar performance that can be driven daily. If you haven’t driven one, I suggest you do. It very easily can be a daily driver. The Auto Gallery announced that they were bringing out one of the rarest and most expensive McLarens to date: the McLaren P1 GTR. This vehicle was previously displayed at the Geneva Auto Show, and somehow, The Auto Gallery was able to have it trailered in to share with about four thousand automotive enthusiasts at Supercar Sunday. When the car community heard that it was going to be “on the ground” at Supercar Sunday, nobody could believe it. And to support, McLaren owners poured in from all over California. McLaren stole the show with about 10 million dollars of cars on display. It was truly one for the books. Thank you, Auto Gallery and McLaren, for sharing one of the rarest cars in the world with the car community. For more information, please visit supercarsunday.com. n

All coaches agree: You must shoot hundreds of thousands of shots to become a truly elite shooter. Top-level college and high school programs utilize the latest technology to enable players to get a large number of shots in a short period of time. If you’re not a member of those programs, you are limited to open gyms or local parks and rebounding for yourself. The Shot Zone in Woodland Hills is effective and available to everyone. Just walk in and book time in an open shooting zone. The machines rebound, count makes and misses and tracks your stats. PALOS VERDES ESTATES For a delightful day out, visit Palos Verdes Estates, the “jewel by the sea” along the Southern California coast. At the entrance to the city, Malaga Cove Plaza greets residents and tourists with its beautiful Spanish Renaissance architecture, Mediterranean archways and alcoves. This historic plaza features the King Neptune Fountain, a replica of a famous statue in Bologna, Italy, among shops, a café, a deli and a market, as well as a library only a block away. After you work up an appetite climbing down the renowned cliffs to explore the tide pools, say hello to the seals or surf the coves, where “Pirates of the Caribbean” was filmed, stop in at Yellow Vase – bakery, café and flowers and a favorite of mountain bikers -- offering decadent breakfasts and lunches plus cakes for special events and a full-service, high-end florist and gift shop. Wayfarers Chapel, or “The Glass Church,” is a nationally registered historic place and a must-see for its cliffside location and Lloyd Wright design circa late 1940s. Nearby oceanfront, ecofriendly Terranea Resort boasts Mediterranean architecture and offers luxurious rooms and suites, a peaceful spa, an award-winning golf course, multiple ocean-view pools and eight unique restaurants, bars, cafés and lounges. This destination resort is home to Nelson’s, where you and your family can enjoy fresh California comfort food in a casual setting on the edge of the cliffs with a view of Catalina Island and the allegedly haunted Point Vicente Lighthouse. Among the estate homes along the coastline is rock beach Haggerty’s, the site of the former Haggerty Manor that now houses the Neighborhood Church. In 1927, affluent furniture store owner J.J. Haggerty originally built this southern-Italian-villa-style mansion as his summer home. Visitors are welcome to tour the grounds. About two miles away is popular landmark La Venta Inn, a nationally recognized California Point of Historical Interest that opened in 1924 as the first completed structure on the Palos Verdes Peninsula. This beautifully restored Spanish villa is a soughtafter, luxury, special event destination with spectacular views of Los Angeles and the ocean and award-winning catering. For the classic car enthusiasts in your family, there is a good chance of seeing stunning restored automobiles cruising the streets of Palos Verdes Estates and a definite opportunity to see them on display at the annual Palos Verdes Concours D’Elegance in September. Soak up the sun and relish a historically rich experience when you visit Palos Verdes Estates. n

Ask the

Pharmacist Q A

It seems like I am going to the pharmacy every week to get one of my parents’ prescriptions filled. Is there a way to get them all at the same time, once a month?

Everyone is busy these days. We spend so much of our time running errands that we do not have enough time for fun or relaxing activities. I am sure if you could make one trip to the pharmacy each month, you could find something better to do with the time you save. To help you achieve this, most pharmacies offer a service called “medication synchronization,” or med sync for short. It saves patients time, money and hassle when it comes to their prescription drug refills. It also can go a long way toward tackling a national health problem and reducing the country’s overall medical costs from patients not taking their medications properly. Poor adherence may be the most deadly, most costly and yet most preventable action that keeps patients from being healthier. Many patients and families have multiple medications, and getting all those refills can require several trips to the pharmacy each month. Now, through a med sync program, your pharmacy team can work with your insurance plans so that all of your refills are available for pickup on the same day. The pharmacy can check with you each month to see if there are any changes in the medications and can also contact you when all of the prescriptions are ready for pickup. Our patients currently enrolled in the med sync program love it. A new national survey reinforces that, finding that 83 percent of the patients that are signed up for med sync services say that the med sync services are very helpful in managing their prescription refills, according to Langer Research Associates. A pharmacy’s med sync program can help patients take their medications as prescribed, prevent them from running out of medication and provide them with more time to enjoy living. n

THE EVENTT heP arty of theYear Photography by Marvin Steindler

If the third time’s a charm, the fourth time must be pure magic! That’s how it felt on June 6th at the fourth annual The Event put on by The Foundation for Las Virgenes Schools. Over 1,000 guests roamed the grounds of the Calabasas Tennis and Swim Center visiting with friends, bidding on unique auction items and tasting phenomenal local food and wine. As the tastings wound down, the live auction kicked in with a Rolex watch donated by Polacheck’s Jewelers, a Clippers game from Barry’s Tickets and an amazing gold-level package to the Academy of Country Music Awards Show. The night ended with an unbelievable live concert by The Pine Mountain Logs (aka Venice). The packed dance floor was the place to be! And if that’s not enough, The Event was the first Zero Waste event in Las Virgenes. In just four years, The Foundation has inspired the community to donate over $780,000 to our local schools. Their goal is to make it a million this year, and from the excitement, the energetic bidding and the generous crowd, they’re sure to get there.

Family

Stewardship By Mark Wendell

J

ames B. Stockdale stated in a speech in 1981 that from his horrific eight-year experience as a prisoner of war — the extreme conditions of internment, torture and endless, intense interrogations he and his fellow prisoners endured — he distilled one all-purpose, unoriginal idea. “It’s a simple idea, an idea as old as the scriptures, an idea that is the epitome of high-mindedness, an idea that naturally and spontaneously comes to men under pressure,” said Stockdale. “If the pressure is intense enough or of long enough duration, this idea spreads without even the need for its enunciation…That idea is You are your brother’s keeper.” He added one of his favorite quotes by Francis Bacon: “Adversity doth best induce virtue, while luxury doth best induce vice.” “That’s the flip side of What’s in it for me,” Stockdale concluded. An epiphany resulting from torture or tragedy shouldn’t be necessary to remind us of our duty to others and to bring clarity to our important priorities and family values. But many families overlook this simple precept in the midst of financial planning, often from lack of attention, misplaced priorities or disharmony among family members. Bacon’s eloquent observation should not be a foregone conclusion -- adversity and luxury do not necessarily need be in

opposition when it comes to instilling virtue. Exercising wise family stewardship under the guidance of a professional team may, in fact, foster the virtue of looking beyond “What’s in it for me?” and foster comprehensive financial planning, estate planning and heritage planning. Collaborating as a family and with professionals -- to achieve the shared goals of multi-generational financial security and looking after one another -- is not only virtuous but also an efficient guide to effective long-term wealth management. The question is: Where does a family begin to apply fundamental principles toward the goal of optimum family stewardship? Experienced heritage-planning financial advisors begin by helping the family define its core values. Second, they define specific goals and objectives. Next, they encourage professional collaboration focused on five crucial areas: investment management, administrative structure, tax efficiency, wealth transfer and family stewardship (family meetings, mentoring, education, core values, philanthropy and multi-generational planning). The professional investment management team cannot build a sound investment plan without knowing the tax consequences, wealth transfer goals, liquidity needs, core values and retirement needs of the client family. Each of the five categories of the family responsibilities relies on collaboration with

those professionals most knowledgeable in a given subject. Since it is impractical for most families to provide staff to support every possible need, cooperation between family members and professionals is vital. Willingness to participate in a cohesive working team, rather than outsourcing responsibility, brings us back to Jim Stockdale’s basic principle — it can’t just be about “What’s in it for me?” Since the benefits of collaboration are significant when implementing a family stewardship plan, remembering our responsibility to be our brother’s keeper is practical common sense — as well as its own reward. And finally, of utmost importance is leadership -- from a family member and from a financial advisor specializing in heritage planning -- to bring about an unselfish and harmonious family stewardship plan. n
