A NOTE FROM THE
editor
I have to say it felt so good to come back to work. I have always known that I love my job and what I get to do for a living, but I appreciate it even more now after being closed for a few months. I even love being back at my standing desk working on deadlines to get this first issue to print after the COVID-19 Staya t - H o m e o r d e r. M y t i m e a t h o m e w a s w e l l s p e n t . The most exceptional thing that happened while we were home was that I became a Nana to my new baby grandson, Maddox. My brave daughter Katrina and her husband, Geoff, became new parents on April 5th in the middle of this pandemic. It gave all of us hope to bring home this amazing bundle of joy. GO RED FOR WOMEN ANNUAL LUNCHEON
____________________________________ ____________________________________ Photography by Debbie Vaccarello
The 2020 American Heart Association’s Go Red for Women Luncheon was an amazing success! Organized by the American Heart Association’s Ventura Chapter Executive Leadership Team, the luncheon took place on February 21 at the Four Seasons Hotel in Westlake Village. Dr. Janki Shah and Mr. Mike Soules did a great job leading the panel of doctors and hosting the stage. It was such an informative afternoon discussing the rise of teen vaping and its effects on young people’s heart health, the risk of Alzheimer’s in cardiac patients, the importance of the duration of exercise for women’s health, and the diligent work that the American Heart Association and the Go Red for Women campaign are doing to promote and support STEM studies for young high school girls and careers in STEM for women. Thank you to survivor Lisa Elbaum for sharing her incredible story of living through open-heart surgery and being this year’s guest speaker.

NCL CV 50 YEARS OF GIVING BACK!
____________________________________ ____________________________________ Photography by Mariah Green The Conejo Valley Chapter of National Charity League celebrated its 50th year on March 8 at the Westlake Village Hyatt hotel. This impressive group of mothers and daughters has been volunteering with roughly a dozen local nonprofits. Last year alone, these ladies contributed over 10,000 service hours volunteering. The celebration had two parts: the Day of Giving, a boutique/fundraiser featuring signed Kobe Bryant memorabilia, and the Modelette Fashion Show with 10th and 12th grade girls. This year’s proceeds from Modelette will benefit the Conejo Valley nonprofit Art Trek, which brings art to people of all ages in the Conejo Valley. The inspirational founder and director of Art Trek, Nan Young, spoke at the event. The Day of Giving proceeds support many local philanthropy partners/programs, including Manna Food Bank, Senior Concerns, Therapeutic Rec, Cancer Grief for Children, itary),

Many parents who went along on the scavenger hunts also got to meet their neighbors who were also quarantined at home. ROUND MEADOW ELEMENTARY SCHOOL PARADE
____________________________________ ____________________________________ Students and families were thrilled when
Round
Meadow
Elementa-
ry School had a parade that went through Mountain View Estates, Hidden Hills, West Hills, and Bell Canyon. All the teachers, aids, and specialists drove by honking with signs and balloons. Principal Kirby Brock drove in a convertible alongside the school’s Round Meadow Colts mascot. Everyone was so happy to see each other while keeping a little distance to be safe. The Stay-at-Home order has been particularly hard on students since they haven’t been able to go to school and see their friends or teachers. “These types of drive-by parades have helped people feel connected,” says a local mom. Staying at home has also been tough on moms that suddenly have their children home all the time. They’ve had to manage

WEST HILLS HOSPITAL HOSTS HEART HEALTH EVENT
____________________________________ ____________________________________ Photgraphy by Linda Perry West Hills Hospital and Medical Center hosted a free heart-health event on February 28, prior to the COVID-19 pandemic. The outdoor event was designed as an interactive community expo where attendees could learn how to take care of their hearts, prevent and lower their risk of heart attacks, and help loved ones lead a heart-healthy life. The expo included free blood-pressure screenings, hands-on CPR demonstrations by the hospital’s Cath Lab Team, and instruction about heart rhythms, including AFib. Attendees also learned about the latest pacemaker technology and the newest techniques for cardiac catherization. Heart-healthy lunches were also served. Heart
disease—including
coronary
heart disease, heart attack, congestive heart failure, and congenital heart disease—is the leading cause of death for men and women in the U.S. Prevention includes quitting smoking, lowering cholesterol, controlling high blood pressure, maintaining a healthy weight, and exercising. Throughout history, women have been known to make their jobs look effortless, whether they are running small, local companies or leading multinational corporations. We’d like to honor some of our local businesswomen who treat their teams like family as they mentor staff and provide shining examples of fortitude and ingenuity. Most women already possess certain inherent traits, such as flexibility and emotional intelligence. They’ve also learned how to communicate well and check their egos at the door to really listen to other viewpoints. Born multitaskers, women clearly understand the importance of balancing work and family life while making each one of their relationships feel like number one. Women today thrive in boardrooms all over the world and right in our own backyard. On the following pages, we offer a glimpse into the hearts and minds of a few of our local female leaders. We hope you’ll be inspired as you discover how they use a storehouse of empathy, ideals, drive, and passion to succeed in the world of business.

The desire for low-maintenance patio furniture, for example, arises frequently. Customers want their outdoor space to be a breeze. SEE WHAT'S COOKING
AT WDC
KITCHEN & BATH Health and wellness remains a focal point these days across the globe. In Southern California, family-owned WDC Kitchen & Bath Center notes a similar focus in the kitchen and bath industry and currently offers a myriad of health-minded products to meet this growing need. These include air-dry ovens that cook with little to no oil and combi-steam ovens that enable you to prepare both steamed and regularly cooked meals. They can even defrost and reheat just like your less-than-healthy microwave ovens. The steam also helps food retain more moisture and nutrients. As busy families seek additional ways to maintain a better work/life balance, they look for products that make their lives easier. Voice-activated plumbing fixtures, such as kitchen faucets and shower systems that utilize Amazon’s Alexa and Google Assistant, grow in popularity. Smart refrigerators attract a tech-savvy audience. Bluetooth-enabled devices that let you control your appliances from your smart phone and LCD screens that enable you to adjust oven temperature via Wi-Fi are all on the rise in our increasingly connected world. Refrigerators offering a combination of food zones and filtered water are also on-tap. Black stainless steel puts a new face on popular appliances. All-inone washers/dryers clean and dry within a single unit. Since they’re ventless, they fit conveniently into smaller spaces, such as bathrooms and closets. Customers can find the newest trends for their kitchens, bathrooms, and more at the 2,000-square-foot WDC Kitchen & Bath Center in Agoura Hills or other locations throughout Southern California. n WDC Kitchen & Bath Center 30621 Canwood St. Agoura Hills 818.991.8846 wdcappliances.com

Homeowners still long to let nature in, blurring the line even further between outdoors and in. Space-saving pocket doors that magically disappear upon opening make areas even more accessible and bright. Bi-folding doors also add a novel twist providing wider entryways between rooms. And multi-sliding and bi-folding patio doors, which permit as much as 90% of the outside scenery to show, allow more golden sunlight and glimmering moonlight to shine through. While current trends enable more light to stream in, darker materials, such as bronze and

COOL TILE FROM
WESTSIDE TILE & STONE
With increasingly abundant tile options available in today’s marketplace, sustainable goods are becoming more sought out. While most trends are revolving around ceramic tiles, Carrara marble, or white-marble porcelain slabs, the bold colors and patterns that are starting to pop up are a welcome sight. The advantage of ceramic tile is the abundance of colors and shapes available. Since these tiles are being used in both traditional and contemporary installations, you can install them in unique patterns, such as chevron, herringbone, or staggered brick. Carrara marble remains popular. Material comes in a variety of sizes, finishes, and mosaics that allow it to be used in all sorts of residential applications. The fashionable look of Carrara marble allows kitchens and bathrooms to take on both cool and warm tones that blend a variety of styles. The rise in use of Carrara marble has increased the number of porcelain tiles made to resemble it. The introduction of digital-print technology has allowed porcelain tiles to look exponentially better than before, with an ever-growing amount of variation found in real marble. These marble-looking tiles allow for easy maintenance without worry of staining or discoloration like with real marble. Porcelain slabs have taken the market by storm and are a perfect fit for showers. The advantage of porcelain slabs is not only the jaw-dropping effect of having large pieces of seamless tile in your shower, but also the cost advantage over real marble slabs. Porcelain slabs are extremely durable and can be cleaned very easily. With porcelain slabs taking over the market, we’re seeing a multitude of marble-looking and onyx-looking slabs that fit every style and need. n Westside Tile & Stone 7631 Canoga Ave. Canoga Park 818.704.9222 westsidetile.com

MIX IT UP AT
PTS FURNITURE People are mixing it up this year when it comes to their furniture. Customers at PTS Furniture in Thousand Oaks often choose a combination of styles for a more current look, such as a rustic dining table with contemporary chairs. They tend to prefer functional sofas, sectionals, and recliners with power in lieu of manual. Clients want their phones, iPads, and computers at their fingertips, so we offer many motion sets designed to accommodate devices with built-in charging. Most power recliners can use a battery pack, so you can put them anywhere in a room. Adjustable stand-up desks continue to rise in popularity in home businesses and offices. Desks with rustic woods and other finishes make rooms appear less office-like. Comfortable, ergonomically correct office chairs also remain key for people spending a lot of time sitting at their desks. Greys and blues, as well as clean whites and beiges with a pop of vibrant color, lend new life to a room. Since direct sunlight fades fabric, leather, and wood finishes, performance fabrics that protect against spills, wear, and sunlight are key. Sunbrella, for instance, stands up to sunlight, so you can put it anywhere and never worry. People with active families and pets should also consider performance fabric to make cleaning easier. Sturdy, sustainable bamboo works well in bedrooms and dining rooms and on patios. Although trends may come and go, the knowledgeable designers and salespeople at PTS Furniture continue to make clients feel right at home, just as they have for the past 40 years. n PTS Furniture 250 Conejo Ridge Ave. Thousand Oaks 805.496.4804 ptsfurniture.com

A SEA OF COLORS FROM
FACTOR HD Each year, a new color scheme rises to the forefront. In 2020, neutrals and brass, as well as sky blue and sea green, are especially popular according to the creative designers at Factor HD. Other essentials in floors and surfaces, such as tiles that emulate natural materials, remain in style, as well. Large format porcelain tiles capture the look and feel of marble and stone. The veins in the porcelain can mimic marble and other more expensive materials for a cost-effective alternative. They also prove more durable, lightweight, and resilient than their natural counterparts. Picture kitchen islands crafted in light blue with wooden drawers topped with a single slab of white porcelain, protective ultraviolet (UV) resistant engineered quartz, or elegant slabs of veined porcelain kitchen counters. Oversized walk-in showers also continue to grow in popularity. Mosaic tiles in a range of sizes and styles provide a perfect backslash to any shower, adding texture and a splash of color. Handmade porcelain mosaic tiles in an ocean of subtle shades also look and per form well in pools. Indoors, engineered wood flooring that matches the look of natural wood with less upkeep is fashionable. It’s available in a range of natural shades from light beige and rustic grey to walnut and cider brown. Waterproof laminate that resembles marble has also captured the hearts of homeowners looking to reduce costs and maintenance while creating eye-catching floors. LATEST
TRENDS
TO WATCH FROM
IDN FLOORING Flooring trends change from year to year as homeowners acquire new tastes and technology allows for a larger variety of designs. According to IDN Flooring in Canoga Park, dark hues struck the right note with homeowners this year and last. Flooring finishes ranging from jet black to light gray remain very popular. Always keep the room’s natural lighting and color in mind. If the room is fairly light, use a dark floor and vice versa. Another trend that could continue into next year is letting imperfections, such as a flooring’s grain and pockmarks, create a more natural look and feel. Many factors come into play when deciding what flooring to choose. Determine your ideal wood; decide if you’d like engineered or solid flooring, floated, glued or nailed, and whether the strips should be laid straight, diagonally, or otherwise. Strips placed lengthwise make a room look longer. Placed widthwise, they make it look wider. Lay your floor in the same direction as the light entering the room. Flooring can also be placed in all kinds of patterns. Always keep the size of the room in mind; some require a large area to achieve their full effect. Different woods also possess varying degrees of hardness. Choose denser flooring for rooms that must withstand a lot of traffic, such as hallways, living rooms, and kitchens. Bedrooms usually receive the least. Finishing touches are also extremely important. Oiled finishes work well with floors that get a lot of wear. If one part of an oiled floor is damaged, for instance, it is possible to repair that specific area. Varnished floors can also handle a lot of action and are easily maintained. n IDN Flooring 7947 Canoga Ave. Canoga Park 818.888.8051 idnflooring.net

That way, when you’re on a video conference, the camera has less to see in the background and colleagues and clients can concentrate on you and not get distracted with what else may be going on in the background. Proper lighting shining on you so viewers can see your face is also important. Soundproofing can be really helpful.

Springtime

al, growth, and lush greenery. But in Southern California, springtime also brings underbrush that can fuel fires in the fall. Enter the goats! The Hills of Agoura have a new tradition in late spring: Goat wranglers truck in their flocks to adorn our neighborhoods and eat up the overgrowth. This method of getting rid of undergrowth far surpasses the old one of droning, gasoline-powered weed-whackers. Now we are lulled to sleep by the soft baying of nannies lying down with their kids and the howls of sharp-eyed collies keeping away predators. Goat wrangling is a tough, dirty job, but the results are worth it—clear air, pastoral sounds, and a much-needed buffer between our beloved homes and seasonal wildfires. So, we give thanks to the wranglers and their dogs who spend a few weeks in our neighborhoods and especially to the hundreds of happy goats who leave behind clear fields and a good dose of natural fertilizer for next spring’s bloom. n

Dr. Daniel Rosen
At the Crossroads of Traditional Medicine and Modern Technology By Lori Berezin Photography by Marvin Steindler Specializing in adult outpatient and hospital medicine, Dr. Daniel Rosen cares for a broad spectrum of patients from adolescents to the elderly at his new Calabasas Medicine office. Combining the best of “old-school medicine” with moder n technology, Dr. Rosen offers quality care, employing the latest medical advances combined with an “old school” philosophy of unhurried, one-on-one appointments. The doctor even makes house calls just like “back in the day.” After working as a physician at an Encino office for the past four years, Dr. Rosen started his own concierge-type practice in Calabasas this past January. Early in his career, after practic-

ing hospital-based medicine at Providence Cedars-Sinai Tarzana Medical Center, he had the opportunity to move into office-based primary care. He realized it was difficult to bond with patients in a hospital setting. “I truly love advocating for and being involved in my primary-care patients’ lives,” says Dr. Rosen. “Everything feels more personal. I can be there for my patients through thick and thin.” This year, doctors and nurses were surely in the “thick” of things. Not only was Dr. Rosen faced with the challenges of starting a new medical practice during the early stages of the coronavirus pandemic, but he also needed to help his pregnant wife
through this difficult time. Fortunately, both Dr. Rosen’s family and practice are still thriving. The concierge style of medicine Dr. Rosen now practices allows him to care for a smaller group of patients than he would in a typical medical office. This includes comprehensive care with on-call access to Dr. Rosen 24/7, 365 days a year. This system also provides immediate access to leading area specialists plus emergent hospital management to help navigate the often confusing hospital setting. Membership rates, which can be found on their website, vary for singles, couples, and families with children.
At Calabasas Medicine, all your medical needs can be accessed under one roof, including a state-of-the-art inhouse laboratory for immediate test results, convenient in-house phar macy, digital imaging, Ultrasonography, extensive cardiac testing abilities with EKG, echocardiogram, and stress testing. They also employ some of the most caring staff around, who possess over a century of primary care experience combined. At the center is Dr. Rosen, who has personally seen and managed myriad medical illnesses and emergencies. “Unlike most other board-certified inter nists, I was trained to handle acute and critical care hospitalized patients,” explains Dr. Rosen. “This has helped me manage most hospital-worthy cases outside the hospital, resolving issues before they become more serious.” He has also been recognized as a “Top Doctor” by the Los Angeles Times (2019, 2020) and Los Angeles Magazine (2020). Dr. Rosen strives to live up to these accolades at his new Calabasas Medicine office. He confides, “Practicing medicine i n thi s co m m un i t y h a s been an amazing experience. Even with sunny days ahead, COVID-19 has put a gloom on many summer plans. Postponed family vacations, cancelled summer camps, or missed playdates--this summer is going to be different. Here are answers to questions about the not-so-normal summer ahead.
How can we have a safe playdate?
It’s all about the risk that your family will tolerate. Every time you leave your home or are around other people, you are at risk for catching COVID-19. If you are ready to venture out and see others, choose families that you trust and who are also being careful. Keep a healthy distance away from others and gather outdoors to decrease risk of transmission of the virus. Avoid sharing food or drinks, wash/sanitize hands
How can I address my child’s disappointment about cancelled summer plans? Make sure you get your own feelings in check before talking to your children. Acknowledge their sadness or anger that sleep-away camp or a special trip is not going to happen. Try to find other options, such as camping (even in your own backyard) or learning a new hobby. Create a new normal daily routine for your family to reassure your kids, help them feel safe, and create lasting memories.
frequently, and disinfect commonly touched surfaces.
Will schools open this fall? Most schools will open this fall using three pillars for safety. 1. Measures to prevent the virus from entering campus, such as health screening, temperature checks, and staggered drop offs. 2. Measures to decrease the risk of person-to-person transmission, such as smaller classes, masks, no large gatherings, unidirectional traffic, frequent handwashing, and disinfecting. 3. Procedures to identify illness, isolate, test, and contact trace. Teachers and administrators are working hard this summer to come up with
Is swimming safe? Swimming itself is safe, assuming you follow usual water safety precautions—keep an arm distance away from young swimmers, constantly supervise them in or near water, and surround the pool on all sides with a self-closing, self-latching gate. COVID-19 spreads mainly from respiratory droplets so as long as you and your kids are a healthy distance from other swimmers, masks are worn out of the
creative solutions to engage kids while keeping them safe and learning. For those unable to attend in person or who are home quarantined, school will also be faced with the challenge of having both in-person and online options available. These are unprecedented times but working together as a community to help each other will help us get through this pandemic while still finding creative ways to have fun this summer.
water, and you are careful not to touch shared sur faces, such as gates, changing rooms, and pool equipment without immediately washing your hands, go ahead and enjoy a refreshing dip in the pool.
My children’s camp is open. Should they go? Inquire as to the safety protocols your camp has in place, including how they are going to screen kids to keep COVID-19 from entering camp, decrease transmission between campers, identify illness, isolate, contact trace, and notify you if your child has been exposed. As long as plans are followed to keep campers safe, if you feel comfortable and your children want to go, I think it’s reasonable to send them.

Pharmacist Q
A
How can I tell if my mother is having a stroke?
Spotting a stroke early is important because prompt treatment can minimize brain damage and other complications.
The acronym FAST can help you act FAST to spot a stroke: • F stands for face drooping. Does one side of the face droop or has the person indicated that it is numb? If you are not sure, ask the person to smile. • A stands for arm weakness. Is one arm weak or numb? If one arm drifts down when you ask the person to raise both arms, he or she may be having a stroke. • S stands for speech difficulty. Is the person experiencing slurred speech, unable to speak, or difficult to understand? If you're unsure, ask the person to repeat a simple sentence, such as “The grass is green." Did the person repeat the sentence correctly? • T stands for time to call 911. If the person shows any of these signs and symptoms, call 911 and get him or her to the nearest hospital immediately. When you call 911, make sure to say you believe the person may be having a stroke — this may make emergency services get there faster. Do not delay because time is very important. Additional signs and symptoms include: • Numbness or weakness of the leg • Confusion or trouble understanding • Trouble seeing in one or both eyes • Trouble walking • Dizziness and loss of balance or coordination • Severe headache (with no known cause) These signs and symptoms may appear on their own or alongside face drooping, arm weakness, and speech difficulty (the signs and symptoms outlined by FAST). If you notice any of these signs or symptoms, call 911 and get the person to the nearest hospital.

BLESSING RINGS FOR NURSES In May, during Nurses’ Week, Whitney and Howard Schwartz of Calabasas, along with community change-maker Lisa Kodimer, visited six hospitals and donated 5,000 Gratitude Blessing Ring tokens, gifts of gratitude to nurses for Nurses’ Week. Each gratitude token was accessorized with an inspiring hangtag. In this effort, hundreds of local families came together to raise money for snacks and gifts for frontline workers. The trio visited Olive View Hospital in Sylmar, Kaiser Permanente Pacoima, Valley Presbyterian Hospital, Tarzana Medical Hospital, Kaiser Permanente Woodland Hills, and West Hills Hospital. Whitney and Howard Schwartz have both received legacy awards for being environmentalists, recognized by the City of Calabasas. Chaparral Elementary School created a legacy award in Whitney’s name, which one deserving 5th-grade culminating student receives each year. PERSONAL PROTECTIVE EQUIPMENT DONATIONS MADE POSSIBLE BY LOCAL YOUTH K. Kevin Rezaie, MD, is a neonatologist at Kaiser Permanente, and when the pandemic hit, he quickly realized the huge shortage of personal protection equipment (PPE) that the hospital was going to face. His boys, Cameron and Aiden Rezaie, were among the first in the community to create awareness of the problem that doctors and nurses would be facing, and they started a GoFundMe effort. They raised over $3,000 for PPE that was donated to the Kaiser Permanente doctors and nurses. Cameron just graduated from AC Stelle Middle School and is 13. Aiden is 9 and in 3rd grade at Bay Laurel. Proud mom Negin is the Founder/Head of School at Montessori of Malibu Canyon in Calabasas. It’s great for kids to step up in this day and age and to want to help out. They must have great role models at home.

— PASSING THE TIME —
Staying at Home We hiked trails, painted, lost teeth, rode our bikes, drank more wine, celebrated our birthdays while social distancing and had more family time. Our teachers came out with parades to support students, we played with our children even more, mountain biked, gave birth, went a little stir crazy and enjoyed the beautiful area in which we live.

CCC COMEDY NIGHT WITH CRAIG SHOEMAKER
____________________________________ ____________________________________ Photgraphy by Linda Perry Prior to the COVID-19 pandemic, Calabasas Country Club hosted a fabulous comedy night event. Celebrity comedian Craig Shoemaker headlined the night to a sold-out crowd in the club’s newly constructed Calabash Room—where members and guests laughed the night away. Craig Shoemaker has had a career in show business spanning over three decades as a stand-up comedian, actor, author, writer, and producer. He was named Comedian of the Year at the American Comedy Awards on ABC and garnered two NATAS Emmy awards. Calabasas Country Club looks forward to seeing everyone back at the club for more great events when all the Safer-at-Home restrictions have been lifted and large group gatherings can once again take place. Calabasas Country Club is considered to be one of the best and most popular social-event venues in the greater Calabasas area—where friends can enjoy great food, drinks, laughs, and comradery. WEST HILLS HOSPITAL HONORS JUNETEENTH On Juneteenth, West Hills Hospital held a moment of silence to honor George Floyd and reaffirm its commitment to promote an inclusive culture. The Juneteenth holiday marks a major milestone for Black liberation in the U.S.—the day enslaved Texans finally learned they were free, two-and-a-half years after the Emancipation Proclamation. “As individuals, and as an organization formed of individuals working together as a team, we have the power to change the lives, the care, and the culture in this community and beyond,” said Mark Miller, CEO of West Hills Hospital. “Our mission statement—[that] above all else, we are committed to the care and improvement of human life—couldn’t state it more clearly. Regardless of race, gender, religion, sexual orientation, or anything else, we are here for all people. We heal, we mend, we care for others when they are hurting no matter what.”

Grand National Roadster Show
By Dustin Troyan Photography by Tommy Huth
The 2020 Grand National Roadster Show is in its 71st year. Once known as the Oakland Roadster Show, it is the longest-running indoor car show in the world. This year, the Pomona Fairplex went all out to present the very best in custom automobiles. The Grand National Roadster Show is the embodiment of the classic car and hot rod movement. Notably, the roadsters are the highlight. The show boasts one of the most prestigious awards in hot rodding and custom car building, America’s Most Beautiful Roadster Award. Known as the AMBR Award, this award is the Roadster Show’s highlight and the award to win. This year’s trophy went to Monty Belsham’s Kugel Muroc ’32, built by Squeeg’s Kustoms. Winning this award can put you on the map for your build, vision, and execution. It is truly an honor and is globally recognized. Having a show like the Grand National in our own backyard is par for the course as Southern California is considered the birthplace of hot rodding and custom car building. This show is a tribute to all things hot rodding and customizing as well as a tribute to all of those car builders, innovators, and car owners who dared to push the envelope of creativity, passion, design, craftsmanship, and of course, spending money. This is a show that every car lover should attend at least once! If you didn’t make the trip to Pomona this year to see this auto show, and you love custom cars, make sure you put this event on your list to attend. The Grand National Roadster never disappoints. n
