RESTORED AND REJUVENATED Believed to have inspired Jane Austen’s novel Pride and Prejudice, Balls Park features on the English Heritage Register of Parks and Gardens of Special Historic Interest. Sir John Harrison, a wealthy financier and customs official, constructed the mansion house between 1637 and 1640, possibly to the designs of Nicholas Stone, the King’s master-mason. It was designed in the so-called Artisan Mannerist style, which shows classical traits and metropolitan influences. Converted into a teacher training college in 1946, it then became a campus for the University of Hertfordshire before closing in 2002. Finally, in 2003 plans were made to lovingly restore and convert the estate into an award-winning place to call home.
