Josef Chytry Josef Chytry is Senior Adjunct Professor of Critical Studies at the California College of the Arts, Oakland/ San Francisco, and Founding Managing Editor of the Oxford journal Industrial and Corporate Change at the Institute for Business Innovation, Haas School of Business, University of California, Berkeley. He also lectures in philosophy for Stanford University Continuing Studies. Professor Chytry received a B.A. in international relations from George Washington University, a Master of International Affairs from Columbia University, and a Doctor of Philosophy in politics and the history of ideas from the University of Oxford. He has authored five books. and his next book Cosmotheism: Cytherean Sitings between Heraclitus and Kittler will be published in summer 2020. Among the subjects he has taught are: German philosophy and culture, ancient classical culture, the Italian Renaissance, the European enlightenment, modernism & postmodernism, and international relations. Josef was named the UC Berkeley Extension Honored Instructor for 2009–2010. Josef will accompany the June 1-9, 2021, Undiscovered France (See page 26). Vernard Lewis

Dr. Lewis received his B.S., M.S., and Ph. D. degrees all from UC Berkeley. After being awarded a Chancellor’s Minority Post Doctoral Fellowship, he joined the faculty as a cooperative extension specialist in the Department of Entomological Sciences at UC Berkeley in 1990. Dr. Lewis retired in 2017, but still maintains an office as Emeritus. He has published over 150 publications and given hundreds of lectures, both on and off campus. Dr. Lewis’s research and outreach feature structural and household pests that include termites, ants, cockroaches and bed bugs. Highlights during several decades working as an academic and urban entomologist include creating and construction of a building to be infested with termites-Villa Termiti as well as the development and testing of novel methods of structural pest detection and nonchemical control. Dr. Lewis’ efforts have gained him regional and national awards that include being inducted into the Pest Management Hall of Fame in 2016. Dr. Lewis has extensively travelled as a researcher and consultant and has collaborated with many organizations that include: California Department of Pesticide Regulation, California Structural Pest Control Board, Pest Control Operators of California, San Quentin State Prison, US Environmental Protection Agency, USDA Forest Services, National Pest Management Association, United Nations, Food and Agriculture Organization, at least a dozen countries among six continents. Dr. Nadesan Permaul received his B.A., M.A., and Ph.D. in Political Science from the University of California, Berkeley. He has been an Adjunct faculty in three departments at Berkeley—Rhetoric, Sociology, and Political Science for 27 years. He retired after 33+ years as an administrator at Cal— his last position being the Director of the Associated Students of the University of California (A.S.U.C.). A past president of the Cal Alumni Association (2003–2005), Dr. Permaul has been a lecturer and or host on fifteen Cal Discoveries trips. Nad will accompany the June 4-15, 2021, Journey along the Elbe (See page 74).

Terry Johnson Terry D. Johnson has a master's degree in chemical engineering from MIT and is currently an Associate Teaching Professor of bioengineering at UC Berkeley. He hopes that by doing so, he will be giving students the tools that they will need to repair him as he gets older. Terry teaches courses in a wide range of subjects, displaying a versatility that has prevented him from achieving any actual expertise. In 2010 he received the Golden Apple Award for Outstanding Teaching and was one of the recipients of Berkeley’s 2013 Distinguished Teaching Awards. He is also co-author of the popular science book How to Defeat Your Own Clone (and other tips for surviving the biotech revolution). Terry will accompany the June 6-14, 2021, Grand Seine River & Normandy Passage (See page 72). Frederic Tubach Born to German parents in San Francisco in 1930, Professor Emeritus Frederic “Fritz” Tubach grew up from the age of three in Nazi Germany. Following WWII,Fritz regained his American citizenship and returned to San Francisco in 1949. He attended the UC, Berkeleywhere he received his doctorate in German Literature in 1957. He taught at UC Berkeley from 1959 to 1994. Engaged throughout his career in international education,he served on the German Academic Exchange Service (DAAD) and the UCB Fulbright Committee. He directedthe UC Education Abroad Programs in Göttingen and Bordeaux, where he received an honorary doctorate in 2002. Author of numerous scholarly articles and books on medieval German literature and folklore, Fritz has also written widely acclaimed books for a general readership, including Germany 2000 Years: From the Nazi Era to the Present, a Cultural History of Modern Germany. With co-authors, Bernat Rosner and Sally Patterson Tubach, he wrote An Uncommon Friendship: From Opposite Sides of the Holocaust (University of California, Press) and German Voices: Memories of Life During Hitler’s Third Reich (UC Press). He is a frequent lecturer for Cal Discoveries in Europe. Fritz will accompany the September 21 – October 6,, 2021, Cruise the Heart of Europe, (See page 64). Marissa Moss Marissa Moss graduated from UC Berkeley with a degree in Art History. She has used her knowledge of historical research to write more than seventy children's books, from picture books to middle-grade and young adult novels. Best known for the Amelia’s Notebook series, her books are popular with teachers and children alike, using graphic formats to introduce history in an accessible, appealing way. Barbed Wire Baseball recently won the California Book Award, Gold medal and the California Young Reader Medal. Her historical books cover subjects as varied as Ancient Egypt and Rome, Renaissance Italy, Medieval France, and 19th century London. She has spent years living in France and Italy to do the necessary research and brings a vivid mix of art and daily life to her historical work. Marissa will accompany the July 5-14, 2021, Swiss Alps and the Italian Lakes (See page 52).

Alex Filippenko Dr. Alex Filippenko is addicted to observing total solar eclipses, having seen 16 of them—including one in March 2015, aboard an airplane high above the North Atlantic Ocean, as part of a Cal Discoveries Travel trip. He is well known for his ability to make complex ideas accessible and entertaining. Winner of the most prestigious teaching awards at UC Berkeley and voted the “Best Professor” on campus a record 9 times, he was named the National Professor of the Year in 2006. He has produced 5 astronomy video series with The Great Courses, coauthored an award-winning astronomy textbook, and appears in more than 100 TV documentaries. An elected member of both the National Academy of Sciences and the American Academy of Arts and Sciences, Alex is one of the world’s most highly cited astronomers. His primary areas of research, in which he is a leading authority, are exploding stars, black holes, gamma-ray bursts, galaxies, and the expansion of the Universe. He is the recipient of numerous prizes for his scientific research and was the only person to have been a member of both teams that revealed the accelerating expansion of the Universe, propelled by mysterious “dark energy.” This discovery was honored with the 2011 Nobel Prize in Physics to the teams’ leaders and the 2015 Breakthrough Prize in Fundamental Physics to all team members. Alex will accompany the July 4-12, 2021, Cruise the Rhine & Mosel Rivers | A Family Journey (See page 66). Stanley Brandes Stanley Brandes is Professor of the Graduate School in the Department of Anthropology, University of California, Berkeley. He has devoted his career to researching and teaching about the societies and cultures of Mediterranean Europe, Latin America, and the United States. He is the author of six books and nearly two hundred articles and book chapters concerning a wide variety of topics, most recently ritual and religion, eating and drinking patterns, photographic imagery, and animal-human relations. On two occasions, he served as Director of Study Centers for the UC Education Abroad Program. He has lectured widely at academic institutions all over the world, and accompanied tour groups organized by UC Berkeley Extension. Stanley will accompany the July 18-29, 2021, Riches of the Emerald Isle (See page 34).
Dunmore Head, Dingle Peninsula, Ireland Hans Giesecke Hans Giesecke began his service as Executive Director of International House at UC Berkeley in July 2012. His driving focus has been making I-House students’ residential experience(s) a top highlight of their enrollment experience at Berkeley. Prior to his arrival at Cal, Hans served as President of Anatolia College in Thessaloniki, Greece where he led an “American-style ” international campus with more than 2,300 pupils and students from Kindergarten through MBA. Before serving in Greece, he was President/CEO of the Independent Colleges of Indiana, Inc. in Indianapolis, the President’s Advisor for Student Affairs at International University Bremen in Germany (now Jacobs University), President of the Tennessee Independent Colleges and Universities Association in Nashville, TN, and Director of Marketing and Research with the Association of Independent California Colleges and Universities (AICCU) in Sacramento. He earned his Ph.D. from Vanderbilt University in Education and Human Development. His M.A. was received from the University of Wisconsin-Madison and his B.A. from Williams College. Hans enjoys many opportunities to interact with current I-House residents and the thousands of Cal alumni around the world who recall their I-House residency as one of their fondest, university-related personal memories. Hans will accompany the September 5-17, 2021, Imperial Journey | Germany, Poland & the Czech Republic (See page 28); and the July 18-28, 2022, Switzerland, Germany and Austria | Featuring the Passion Play in Oberammergau (See page 54).
Karen Folger Jacobs Karen Folger Jacobs loves Italy. Raised in Pennsylvania, she graduated from Antioch College and bought a one way ticket to Europe. She thrived in Rome for over a year. In some ways she feels more at home in Rome than in the USA. Since receiving the Chancellor’s Dissertation Award for her Ph.D. in Education she has lived in Berkeley forty-two years. Despite her education degree and experience teaching from nursery school to graduate school she has many interests in the arts—especially film. She taught film courses at UC Berkeley and on Fulbrights to India and Pakistan. She has worked on major Italian movies as coordinator or assistant director. She served on the jury of the Naples Film Festival and as president of the jury of Cinema Africana in Milan. She led a trip to the Venice Film Festival. Karen will accompany the September 25 – October 3, 2021, Tuscany | Lucca, Carrara & the Cinque Terre (See page 42). Dylan Davis Dylan Davis is currently senior advisor to The Asia Foundation and associate director at the UC Berkeley Institute of East Asian Studies (IEAS). He was the Foundation’s country representative in Korea (2015-18). Dylan has extensive professional and academic experience focused on Korea and its development. He has been honored with numerous awards from institutions such as the U.S. State Department, the U.S. Embassy in Seoul, The Asia Foundation, and the UC, Berkeley. From 2011-15, Davis served as program director for the Center for Korean Studies at the UC, Berkeley, focusing on strengthening researchand programs on Korea, expanding its Korean Studies teaching curriculum and visiting scholar program, and promoting knowledge about Korea. His research interests focus on how foreign governments and private entities engage with the Korean media and public. On this trip Dylan will connect the group with a few speakers in Singapore and Siem Reap who are connected to UC Berkeley.

Left: Vernazza, Cinque Terre, Italy Deolinda Adao Deolinda Adao holds a Ph.D. in Hispanic Languages and Literatures with an emphasis in Luso-Brazilian Languages and Literatures and a Designated Emphasis in Women, Gender and Sexuality from the University of California, Berkeley. Deolinda has published five books, many literary articles, several interviews, and 4 translations (poetry and prose). She has docent two exhibits, one at the Bancroft Library of the University of California, Berkeley and the other at the Doe Library of the same institution, where she has been the director of the Center for Portuguese Studies since 2000. Her research interests include Gender Studies and Post-Colonial Studies. Although she focuses on Literature, her scope is multidisciplinary in nature and cultural based. As such, she incorporates History, Sociology, Philosophy, and Political Science in her analysis of Art in general and Literature in particular. Deolinda will accompany the October 6-17, 2021, Romance of the Douro (See page 76).
