10/11 ^ DONOR HONOR ROLL
Letter from the Chairman
in academic year 2010-11, CalArts moved forward on a number of fronts, including new programs, improvements in work and study spaces, and initiatives with partners, both at home and abroad. Volatility of global markets, high unemployment rates and rising student indebtedness were continuing concerns, although applications to CalArts increased and enrollment was steady. The rapid advance of technology’s capacity and function —and its impact upon our lives—are among the subjects explored in the Institute’s mfa Program in Art and Technology, launched in 2010. Students in the program develop critical points of view on everything from object-based media and interactive design to immersive installation and hybrid performance. The year saw significant upgrades to the CalArts campus. In January construction began on a School of Art expansion project that includes 16 new studios, a critique room, and painting classroom, all with 20-foot-high ceilings. These light-filled, airy spaces now provide long-awaited and much-needed additional work areas for the School of Art. A space formerly used for studios was re-imagined and transformed into a new dance studio for The Sharon Disney Lund School of Dance. The converted space features sprung Marley flooring, one fully mirrored wall, ballet barres, a sound system and video equipment, and provides dancers with a fifth full-time studio in which to compose work, rehearse and perform.
CalArts’ first Winter Intensive was in the planning stages in 2011. Designed to enable students from other colleges and universities around the world to experience the Institute’s unique educational environment and programs, the Intensive would utilize campus facilities with our students away on winter break and bring a new source of revenue to CalArts. Other planned initiatives included an upgraded, state-of-the-art animation facility, and a new Center for Research on Creativity at CalArts. A proposed Center for Life and Work addresses a most pressing concern: the preparation of our students for their entry into their professional lives. A $5 million endowment will be necessary to sustain this new center, which will help build a wide-ranging internship program, individual career coaching both inside and outside the arts, and an extensive range of workshops on subjects ranging from financial literacy and entrepreneurship to résumé preparation and interviewing technique. In February 2011, School of Theater students hosted and collaborated with 10 students and one faculty member visiting from the Russian Academy for Dramatic Arts. In a two-week workshop sponsored by the U.S. Department of State, participants developed a joint production that premiered in Moscow in June. A trilingual production of King Lear called Lear/Layer was created by a CalArts team in collaboration with students from Seoul’s Chung Ang University.
Also in development was a unique binational theater collaboration involving the CalArts Center for New Performance, the center’s bilingual theater initiative Duende CalArts, and Cultura UDG, the presenting organization of the University of Guadalajara Foundation. The effort would culminate at redcat in March 2012, when Mexico City-based director Martín Acosta staged the world premiere of young playwright Alejandro Ricaño’s Timboctou, after the bilingual multimedia production had been extensively developed by a joint creative team working at both CalArts and the university of Guadalajara. Going forward, our most urgent concern is to hold down costs of a CalArts education and to begin to ease the tuition burden on students and their families. Enhanced scholarship support such as The Sharon Disney Lund Foundation provides for The Sharon Disney Lund School of Dance, The Herb Alpert Foundation for The Herb Alpert School of Music, The Walt Disney Company for the School of Film/Video, and the Ahmanson and Wasserman Foundations for students in general, are critical to help ensure that students graduate without huge burdens of debt.
Sincere thanks to each and every donor for gifts made in 2010-11. Your interest and belief in this great institution make everything at CalArts possible and is deeply appreciated.
