he origin of Oakridge Landscape, Inc. (Oakridge Landscape) dates back to 1966 when Lenny Myers and Chuck Johnson started a landscape company by the name of California Landscape. They eventually rolled out Oakridge Landscape and Irrigation in 1993 to meet the high demand for work in the Temecula Valley of Southern California. In 1992 Lenny passed away, and his son Jeff Myers and Chuck Johnson became partners. In 1998 the company was sold to TruGreen LandCare and was bought back in 2001 by Chuck and Jeff and the new Company that stands today was formed with the name Oakridge Landscape, Inc. Chuck retired in 2006, and the company has been owned and operated by Jeff Myers ever since. It is considered one of Southern California’s largest and most successful landscape service companies. Jeff Myers has grown the company and expanded its services to include four main divisions. These include Landscape Construction/Irrigation, Maintenance, Erosion Control and Arbor Care, as well as the ability to self-perform all

concrete and hardscape services. They work throughout Southern California and on the Central Coast for everything from master planned communities, residential developments, apartment and condominium complexes, shopping centers, commercial/industrial buildings, homeowner associations, parks and for cities and other public agencies. Oakridge Landscape also performs a considerable amount of maintenance work, and their erosion control

division is now gearing up for what may very well be a wet and busy season. Richard Dunbar has been in the construction arena for 37 years, and he has been the erosion control general manager for Oakridge Landscape for the last decade. He previously worked for and started and managed the erosion control division for a massive, well-known national landscape company. “Oakridge Landscape is such a great company to be a part of and Jeff Myers is the best

owner you could ever hope to work with,” says Dunbar. “Although we are considered to be one of the larger landscape construction companies in Southern California, Jeff Myers and all of our 300 plus employees interact with each of our clients on an individual basis, providing them with hands-on, personal service, to give our clients that peace of mind. We have the top pros in the industry, and I think our work ethic is what sets us apart from the pack.” Oakridge Landscape has an extensive labor force that is equipped to handle even the most demanding jobs. They have created a long list of award-winning landscapes and are currently working on several housing development projects in Santa Maria, Moorpark, Santa Clarita, Simi Valley, and Camarillo. Oakridge Landscape is performing all of the erosion control and landscape construction on an ongoing several hundred home project in Santa Maria. “We are doing
www.calcontractor.com
a lot of erosion control work on the grading portion of this project,” says Dunbar. “We have also installed some of the landscaping in this golf course community. We are working with the Developer and the HOA to perform the maintenance work on this project as well." Oakridge Landscape is also busy on hydroseeding projects, which many times goes hand-in-hand with stabilization and bagging work on these projects. “This is our busiest time of year for erosion control, and we are equipped and ready for what could very well be a very wet fall and winter,” says Dunbar. “We are also doing a lot of commercial landscape construction, particularly in the area of Podium construction. Also, we are performing landscape installations on industrial complexes and hospitals.” Dunbar points out that housing developers like Toll Brothers, Brookfield and Tri-Pointe Homes keep them very busy and they also get
the occasional private estate work as well. “We are on a nice job in Santa Clarita for Brookfield Homes right now and another big job nearby for KB Homes,” says Dunbar. “This type of work is the bread and butter in our industry right now, but we like to remain diversified by continuing to bid jobs in the commercial and industrial sector, as well as doing work for cities and other agencies.” Oakridge Landscape maintains a fleet of 30-plus construction machines that they use daily on both their erosion control and landscape construction divisions. Their fleet is made up of mini excavators, track skid steers, backhoes and skip loaders. They also rent excavators, wheel loaders, telehandlers, water trucks and skid steer loaders on a regular basis. “We use the larger machines during storm events and throughout the rainy season for mud cleanup, setting k-rail, erosion control, and sand bagging,” says Dunbar.

“We turn to Quinn Rental Services whenever we need to rent heavy machinery, and we have been purchasing a good deal of Cat equipment from Quinn Company in Sylmar.” Dunbar points out that Oakridge Landscape has been moving more toward Cat equipment, with approximately 50 percent of their fleet being Cat at this time. “We go with Cat for dependability, durability and prompt service. We are switching over much of our fleet from another brand because Quinn has been there for us whenever we have needed them. We deal with Walter Martinez for Quinn Rental Services and Victor Munoz at Quinn Company. Both of these gentlemen have come through for us in emergency situations, and I am amazed at just how quickly they meet our needs,” says Dunbar. “Our most recent purchases include a Cat 300.9D Mini Hydraulic Excavator and a Cat 279D Compact Track Loader, which we purchased with a specialized cleanup
8
bucket, auger and a mower deck for clearing brush. I also want to recognize and thank Mark Martin, Sylmar branch manager for Quinn Company, who has also taken excellent care of us as well.” Dunbar also purchases equipment and bucket trucks for the arbor and tree trimming division at Oakridge Landscape. “We do a lot of emergency tree work for cities and maintenance work for HOA’s and private developers, and this requires the use of entirely different equipment,” says Dunbar. “The work we do requires the use of reliable equipment, and we are very lucky to have top of the line vendors that we can always depend on.” Oakridge Landscape is very busy right now, and according to Dunbar, their work schedule remains full through most all of 2017. “We have the work, and that is not an issue right now. What is most important and pressing is hiring and keeping only the best and most qualified employees,” says Dunbar. “When the
2016 Specialty/Landscape ISSUE CALCONTRACTOR
economy crashed back in 2008, many of the workers left the construction sector and moved on to other careers. This left our industry with a shortage of qualified operators and laborers. We have done a great job of finding qualified individuals that are willing to go beyond what is expected and that has helped our company grow and prosper.” Oakridge Landscape is a total landscape management organization with multiple locations to better serve their client's needs. Their headquarters is located in Valencia, with branch offices in Santa Maria, Camarillo, and North Hills. With one of the highest performance standards in the landscape industry, Oakridge Landscape is poised for continued growth and success throughout Southern California and the Central Coast. COASTLINE Leverages John Deere C&F Technician
Equipment
Program To Combat Shortage of Technically Skilled Workers In Heavy Equipment Distribution Industry By Brian Hoover
According to a report released on Jan. 20, 2016 from The AED Foundation (American Equipment Distributors), the U.S. heavy equipment distribution industry loses at least $2.4 billion each year as a result of dealers’ inability to find and retain technically skilled workers. The report further states that the equipment distribution industry is suffering from a “skills gap” between the need to fill technical jobs and the skills currently possessed by prospective employees. The job availability rate in this particular niche is reported to be three times that of the national average, making it one of the most significant challenges for equipment dealers throughout the United States. One of the more subjective reasons for this shortage is thought to be due to cultural bias or industry
10
stereotypes. This includes students and even parents that may view vocational careers as somehow being less desirable than a 4-year degree. When this crisis is perceived more objectively, the evidence points to the fact that baby boomers are retiring in record numbers, leaving a shortage of skilled technicians in their wake. This trend is expected to continue through 2030 and in the meantime the heavy equipment industry is searching for ways to entice young people away from computer technology, gaming and programming degrees and into the rewarding world of diesel mechanics. Coastline Equipment is attacking this issue head-on by fully leveraging John Deere’s Construction & Forestry (C&F) Technician Program. Chris

Apodaca is the corporate product support administrator at Coastline Equipment, and he is currently overseeing the C&F technician recruiting program. “Our John Deere C&F Technician Program is proud to sponsor qualified students through our affiliation with Linn-Benton Community College in Albany, Oregon,” says Apodaca. “This is a two-year program that offers an Associate of Applied Science degree. The curriculum is rigorous, and is a fully accredited STEM (science, technology engineering, mathematics) degree, which is highly sought after.” According to the Linn-Benton Community College (LBCC) website, credits earned at LBCC can be transferred and they have a partnership with Oregon State University for those seeking a bachelor’s degree. LBCC also recently opened a brand new $8 million facility, which was built specifically for the heavy diesel department. “The department heads and instructors are very hands-on and involved to the point where we receive a quarterly report on each of our students. Not just about their grades, but a full assessment of their work ethic, leadership qualities, and general progress,” says Apodaca. “This is not your typical vocational training school, and students are learning from some of the brightest folks in the region, and it’s all certified by John Deere.” John Mann is the service manager at the Coastline Equipment Oxnard branch, and he has been very involved in the John Deere tech program from the beginning. “We originally worked with a community college in Arizona 12 years ago, and I sat on their advisory board,” says Mann. "We recently moved over to the Linn-Benton Community College in Oregon and we could not be more impressed with the curriculum and the rate of which our students have grown and excelled,” says Mann. John Mann and Chris Apodaca currently sit
12
on the Linn-Benton Community College C&F Technician Program advisory board, along with several other members from Pape Machinery. Coastline Equipment has an excellent working relationship with Pape Machinery (Pape), the John Deere dealer in Northern California, Oregon, Washington and Northwestern Idaho. Pape has been sending students to Linn-Benton Community College for many years and they recommended the school to Coastline Equipment. “We are very happy and thankful to work with Pape Machinery in this valuable program,” says Mann. “They have been an excellent partner that has welcomed us with open arms.” So, what sort of sponsorship does Coastline Equipment offer in this John Deere C&F Technician Program? Let’s first go through the vetting process and just what it takes to be a Coastline diesel mechanic and technician. First off, it should be noted that Coastline traditionally accepts around one out of every ten applications they receive. There is a screening process, and it entails an initial interview with the appropriate Coastline branch manager and service manager,
2016 Specialty/Landscape ISSUE CALCONTRACTOR
who will often take the student to lunch and discuss the program, as well as the student’s goals and aspirations. Coastline is very selective and looks for students with a strong work ethic and high academic aptitude. Brett Stover and Marshal Mensinger recently entered the John Deere C&F Technician Program with a 4.0 GPA, and every student currently in the program at Linn-Benton has a GPA of 3.75 or higher. Many of the students that apply for the sponsorship program come from high schools in and around Coastline’s nine locations throughout Southern California and Idaho. Through a collaboration with the local school districts, students are able to learn about this rewarding and stable career. Artesia High School in Lakewood is one of the beneficiaries of these new programs, with Coastline Equipment and Bragg Crane generously donating three diesel engines to help them jump-start their diesel program. Dallas Allen has the distinct privilege of being the very first student to be sponsored by Coastline Equipment for the John Deere C&F Technician Program. “I was already leaning toward

construction when I went and interviewed with Buck Baird and Steve Stolworthy at the Coastline Santa Maria branch,” says Allen. “I actually started with the company in February 2001 in a sort of apprentice role, until the school year began. Once the program began in September, I was surprised to see just how technical the heavy equipment is today and the education that I got from the John Deere tech program was invaluable.” Dallas graduated from the program in 2003, and was recognized as first in his class. “I feel that it is essential to get this type of education if you want to get hired to work at any high level construction dealership. It isn’t just turning wrenches, it takes both brains and brawn and going through the Level 1 training and the classroom work was very helpful and important to me.” Dallas continues to point out that even after 15 years, the job remains interesting and fulfilling. “After graduating in 2003, I went to work in the shop in Santa Maria and after working very hard, I was promoted to the field in 2005,” says Allen. “Every day is different and you don’t know whether you will be working on an electrical

issue for a massive excavator or hydraulic hoses on a skid steer. I also really enjoy solving issues that other service companies have attempted but were unable to figure out.” John Mann makes it clear that the John Deere C&F Technician Program is not a walk in the park. “These young men work very hard and in order to get promoted to the field and get their own service truck, you have to really hustle and go through what we call capstone courses,” says Mann. “It is a real credit to a technicians work ethic if and when they earn the status of a field technician.” Oscar Santana entered the John Deere technician program in 2006 after learning about it at a presentation put on by Coastline Equipment at his high school in Oxnard. “I applied for the opportunity, along with several others from Rio Mesa High School, and was so excited when I found out that I was accepted,” says Santana. “The hands-on training was invaluable, and we completely tore down a John Deere engine to the bare block and then reassembled it piece by piece. The instructors were great and worked with every student individually. This education
opened up my mind and gave me the confidence and experience that I needed to begin working full time at the Coastline Oxnard location.” All Coastline Equipment technicians attend continuing education classes to learn about new equipment series and they are certified on all new product lines. “I now work as a field service technician for the Long Beach location and I really love being out in the field every day.” Oscar now lives in Whittier where he purchased a home at just 23 years old, and he and his wife are now planning on starting a family. Francisco Garcia joined the John Deere C&F Technician Program in Sept. 2015. He grew up on a ranch in Somis, CA, where his father taught him the in’s and out’s of working on his family’s own John Deere equipment. Francisco learned about the Coastline college sponsorship program after a friend recommended him to John Mann, the service manager at the Coastline Oxnard location. “I had been attending college for auto mechanics when I first learned about the Coastline program,” says Garcia. “It was like a dream come true, for a company like Coastline to take this sort of time and interest in

me. I am honored to have been selected to be a part of this rewarding program and I will do everything I can to make Coastline and my family proud.” Francisco will be graduating in June 2017 and his main goal is to work hard and eventually earn the right to be a field technician, where he will receive his own truck. “This program has given me the structure that I had been missing as far as knowing just how these diesel engines work, especially things like electrical systems and hydraulics. I have learned how to read a schematic and the learning facility and instructors have just been incredible. It has been a great experience and I couldn’t be any happier. I love my bosses and everyone here at the college. I really feel like I hit the jackpot.” Coastline Equipment currently has seven students enrolled and being sponsored by the John Deere C&F Technician Program. The Coastline Equipment sponsorship is set up so that an enrolled student will be reimbursed for one-half of the out of pocket tuition expenses during the 2-year program. Sponsored students will receive assistance with tuition from Coastline Equipment. Reimbursement
14
will be provided upon receipt of quarterly tuition expenses and after the completion of each term. The remainder of the out of pocket tuition expenses are reimbursed in four installments following the six month, 12 month, 18 month and 24 month anniversary of each student's (now employee) full-time employment with Coastline Equipment. Each student is required to sign a sponsorship agreement, which states the student must maintain a 3.0 grade point average in the program and adhere to all academic policies, rules, and regulations. The U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS) reported that the mean annual salary for diesel engine specialists as of May 2014 was $45,160, with the top 10 percent earning $65,350 a year or higher. Coastline’s top technicians and highest earners have come from the John Deere tech program. Coastline offers a variety of incentives to their employees, including bonuses and one of the best health care plans in the industry. On average, employees stay with Coastline for a minimum of 15 years with superstars like Don Perryman (40 years – Senior Technician),
2016 Specialty/Landscape ISSUE CALCONTRACTOR
John Mann (30 years – Service Manager) and Russ Brown (29 years – Corporate Product Support Manager) setting the bar for all of the upcoming talent. It is estimated that over the next 20 years, 200,000 individuals will be needed just to replace those retiring from the heavy diesel mechanic industry. John Deere and Coastline Equipment continue to be at the forefront of technology, and they are now leading the effort to find talented young technicians to take companies like Coastline into the future of diesel and electrical mechanics. “I think that this is a very important program and it is the lifeline of our service departments here at Coastline,” says Mann. “I started working for Coastline when I was 22 years old and the past 30 years have just flown by. We must be diligent to continue our efforts toward bringing young and talented men and women into the exciting and indispensable heavy construction equipment industry.” For more information on the John Deere C&F Technician Program sponsored by Coastline Equipment, please log on to www.jdcftech.com or call Chris Apodaca at (562) 272-7470. TRENCH SHORING COMPANY’S Slide Rail Systems Meet Shoring Challenges of Costco Fuel Tank Installation Dealing with large- scale dimensions and unusual tank configurations presented multiple challenges in a recent fuel tank project at a Norwalk, CA, Costco location. However, the specialized capabilities of Trench Shoring Company’s Slide Rail Shoring System was more than equal to the task. Because Costco sells so much fuel and must refill their tanks several times a week, the client required installation of five large fuel tanks, placed closely together. The contractor, Wayne Perry, also designed an “L”-shaped configuration for the large fuel
18
tank installation pit, which measured approximately 60 ft.X70 ft. A key benefit of using an L-shaped design versus a traditional square configuration is reduction in both the labor involved in removing a larger amount of soil, plus the cost of expensive rock fill for such a large pit. Normally, such installations employ a square configuration because most companies are unable to handle shoring angles of such large scale. However, because considerable cost savings can result from pushing the limits of slide

rail applications, B.L. Hayes Contracting, Inc. was hired by Wayne Perry to dig and shore the hole. To provide the best solutions for this challenging installation, Mike Hayes turned to Trench Shoring Company to provide a component-based, customized slide rail system. After fully understanding the contractor’s specs for the Costco installation, Trench Shoring determined which components would best meet the multiple requirements. The Company designed and delivered the equipment, then instructed BL Hayes on

the proper order of assembly and installation of the Slide Rail Shoring System on the job site. Because the Trench Shoring Slide Rails were pre-fabricated, there was no need to hire outside assembly labor, and welders, saving additional project costs. Total installation time was reduced as was lost time on site during the entire excavation and shoring process. Time from initial startup through the final grading of the hole to required depth was just four days. Notes B.L. Hayes Principal, Mike Hayes, “I was very satisfied with the team we put

Trench Shoring Company also provided a top-notch shoring consultant for instruction, Jason Lakin, who was both knowledgeable and willing to devote the extra time needed.” Wayne Perry and B.L. Hayes selected Trench Shoring Company because of their decades-long reputation and experience in handling large, difficult installations such as
this five-tank fuel tank project. Trench Shoring Company is the largest supplier of slide rail shoring systems in the Western United States, providing slide rail panel sizes from 6’ to 28’ from their ten locations. Because of the Company’s huge inventory, customized design support and fast delivery, and their commitment to the contractor’s satisfaction, Trench Shoring Company has proven success in helping to keep projects on schedule and on budget. Shoring Engineers Completes Shoring and Excavation at new Long Beach Civic Center California contractor leverages CASE fleet – including new CX490D – in excavating more than 120,000-cubic-yards of material for new downtown landmark. For 50 years now, Shoring Engineers has helped excavate and secure the foundational structures of some of Southern California’s most iconic new construction, including The Los Angeles Cathedral, Staples Center and L.A. Live. The company is celebrating its 50th year in business by capping off the shoring and excavation work for the new Long Beach Civic Center, working as a subcontractor with primary developer Clark Construction. The project, which totals nearly 600,000-square-feet divided among three structures for both the City of Long Beach and the Port of Long Beach, includes a new parking garage below grade with two
20
levels of parking. The garage itself requires a total depth of excavation of around 28 feet, with the mass excavation of the project totaling 120,000-cubicyards. To move that amount of dirt, Shoring Engineers has relied on a fleet of CASE equipment, anchored by a CX700 excavator and supported by numerous other machines, including the all-new CX490D. “These machines, they’re production is averaging about 150 loads per day in a double bottom truck,” says George Woodley, Jr., vice president, whose father started the company in 1966. “It's been a pretty productive job, and so far, it's been really good for us.”

“With the bucket size of the CX700A excavator, we basically can two-pass each trailer. Four buckets fills a set of double bottoms, and we do it quickly,” he says. “So on a job like this, with 120,000-cubic-yards, that's really the ideal machine to do the job.” Shoring Engineers has had the CX700 for about eight years, but recently purchased the CASE CX490D excavator (362 horsepower, 60,700-pound bucket digging force) to assist on big projects like this, and then anchor “smaller projects” where access is more restricted. A few primary factors drove the addition of the CX490D. Depending on the job, contractors in California

can increase their likelihood of winning bids if they can show or commit a certain percentage of their fleet working on the job to be Tier 4 Final. Similarly, advances in technology will help secure greater uptime compared to older equipment, and achieve greater fuel efficiency – early estimates show the CX490D to be about 30 percent more fuel efficient than the machine it replaces in the Shoring Engineers fleet. “The CX490D is nice because it's a little bit smaller, but it's a quick machine with a pretty large bucket on it that allows us to load trucks pretty fast,” says Woodley, Jr. “The machines are quiet, they're clean burning, they're very fuel efficient. Diesel technology is a big issue these days, so having Tier 4 Final technology is a difference maker. It lets us bid and perform on jobs where others might not be able to, if they don't have that technology in their fleet.” The CASE CX490D excavator meets Tier 4 Final emissions standards through

a combination of selective catalytic reduction (SCR) and diesel oxidation catalyst (DOC) technologies, which helps maximize uptime and performance – all with minimal maintenance. There is no diesel particulate filter (DPF), no DPF regeneration or associated lifetime service costs. The added speed that Woodley, Jr. references is made possible by a number of advances in the CASE D Series line. Faster cycle times are achieved through a new electronically controlled pump, a larger control valve and multiple sensors. The CASE Intelligent Hydraulic System and its four integrated control systems further make the best use of the machine’s hydraulic power and momentum, resulting in added strength,
fuel efficiency, and precise response to controls and smooth operation. “[This] is a pretty smooth machine,” says Serafin Gonzalez, superintendent, Shoring Engineers. “Especially when you load trucks, the machine has to be smooth. It can't be jerky, so when you're loading you have a nice smooth dump on the trailer.” The 60,700-pound bucket digging force is also ideal for the varied working conditions the company finds in Southern California. “The digging power is pretty good,” says Gonzalez. “Digging power is very important, because when you're digging through, for example hard clay, you need the digging power, to be able to still be efficient with loading trucks.”

Maintaining Comfort, Uptime The CX490D excavator features best-in-class cab space, with a fully adjustable operator station anchored by a standard heated air-ride seat and joystick controls. It also has a pressurized and iso-mounted cab that keeps noise and vibration down. A standard rearview camera feeds a 7-inch widescreen monitor, which also provides operators with real-time access to important performance parameters, including fuel consumption, operating hours and machine information. “It's got nice features and displays,” says Gonzalez. “You can see everything, how everything works, how everything is operating. It's a nice setup.” All new CASE heavy excavators, including the CX490D, come with CASE ProCare – a suite of product

assurances that includes a threeyear Advanced CASE SiteWatch™ telematics subscription, a threeyear/3,000-hour full-machine factory warranty, and a threeyear/3,000-hour planned maintenance contract. Shoring Engineers works closely with local equipment dealer/service provider Sonsray Machinery to handle its preventive maintenance on the new equipment, and also relies on their assistance as a second set of eyes and ears in reviewing the telematics data to keep ahead of machine health/performance. “The warranty that we get with these machines through CASE is pretty impressive, and that's a very nice feature to have,” Woodley, Jr., says. “I know that they are able to monitor the machines remotely and alert us

when service is required. That's really a nice advantage to have; it's a really nice use of modern technology.” “The relationship that we've built with Sonsray is a good one,” he says. “Art Jurado and their sales team were very attentive. They're there for us if we've got a question, issue or problem. That responsiveness, it's a difference maker, because we've seen what it can be like when we don't get that. This industry moves very, very quickly, so you've got to be able to act fast, solve your problems, and get things done. CASE and its dealers have shown that they've been able to do that pretty consistently.” Cc

UPDATED JOHN DEERE 470G LC EXCAVATOR PRIMED TO TACKLE PIPELINE, MASS EARTH MOVING AND ROAD BUILDING PROJECTS The John Deere 470G LC Excavator is the latest member of the production-class equipment lineup to be updated to meet Final Tier 4 emissions standards and to incorporate a bevy of customer-inspired and productivity-boosting features. The 367-horsepower model now comes fully loaded with an EPA Final Tier 4 13.5L diesel engine, a comfortable and spacious cab, along with an enhanced LCD monitor with simplified navigation. In addition, optional 2D/3D grade guidance sensormounting brackets enable customers to install their preferred aftermarket grade-control system. A stalwart in the John Deere line of G-Series excavators, the production-class model offers
simplified maintenance options, with such features as a battery disconnect switch, spin-on fuel filters and two additional water separators to maintain long fuel filter life. The 470G LC's DPF can go up to 15,000 hours before ash removal, and, like its counterparts, engine and hydraulic oil sample ports allow for quick and convenient, proactive maintenance checks, which keep operators running longer. In addition, an improved step position on the track frame and handrails on the upper structure provide multiple points of contact when accessing the engine compartment. The excavator includes smart features, such as an engine/ hydraulic-management system
with multiple productivity modes, enabling operators to balance engine performance and hydraulic flow for predictable operation. Cc
VOLVO DEBUTS THE EC750E - ITS LARGEST EXCAVATOR TO DATE The Volvo EC750E was designed to deliver heavy lifting power and high productivity without sacrificing the benefits for which Volvo is known, like best-in-class fuel efficiency. The machine is capable of delivering up to 15 percent higher productivity with 5 percent greater fuel efficiency than its predecessor, the EC700CL. Productivity gains are due in part to a more powerful engine — the Volvo D16J. The 516-horsepower, Tier 4 Final engine provides an 11 percent horsepower increase over the EC700CL. When combined with larger diameter boom cylinders and increased working pressure, the EC750E delivers a 7 percent
28
increase in digging force and a 4 percent boost in hydraulic flow. A new range of buckets have been designed specifically for use with the EC750E, including general-purpose, heavy-duty and extreme-duty designs, which offer up to 10 percent more bucket capacity. While the EC750E weighs three tons more than the EC700CL, it still manages to lower operating costs with a 5 percent gain in fuel effiency. New to Volvo’s arsenal of fuel efficient design elements is a redesigned, fully electrohydraulic control system. The EC750E includes updates which will allow operators to be more efficient, including a reduced number of switch controls within

the cab, and a new, 8-inch LCD display and interface which provides operators with more efficient control. All of these tools sit inside what remains the industry’s best-in-class cab. Improvements to visibility have also been made with the addition of brighter LED work lights and a side view camera. Cc

CAT® GRADE CONTROL 3D FOR D3K2, D4K2, AND D5K2 MODELS BOOSTS PRODUCTIVITY, LOWERS COSTS, AND REDUCES OPERATOR EFFORT Cat® Grade Control 3D, by automating machine functions during both production-dozing and fine-grading applications, enables dozer operators to work more efficiency, accurately, and productively, while also lowering operating costs. The system features an integrated design, including dual, roof-mounted antennas that eliminate the need to climb onto the blade to remove conventional blademounted masts and cables at the end of the day. The AccuGrade™ Ready Option is part of the package, adding versatility by allowing other Cat GRADE technologies to be used, such as AccuGrade Laser or a universal total station when satellite reception is limited.
The system assists operators with an in-cab display that shows grade plan, cut/fill data, and grade indicators, improving productivity up to 50 percent, compared with conventional grading methods. The system virtually eliminates the need for staking and manual grade checking, making the job site safer and allowing the operator to work unassisted to move material exactly as required— saving rework, fuel, and machine wear. In addition, Grade Control 3D allows work to proceed even in limited visibility, extending the work day. As an added benefit, the system's automated blade control reduces required operator input by as much as 80 percent.
The integrated design of the Grade Control 3D system, in addition to the roof-mounted antennas, features an inertial measurement unit that senses machine orientation, GNSS (Global Navigation Satellite System) receivers, data radio, position-sensing hydraulic cylinders, joystick buttons for rapid grade adjustments, and a full-color grade-control display that visually indicates grading progress.
