The combination of great employees, reliable equipment, and the right niche will almost always equal success. Lucas Jones has been in business for himself for more than 16 years and worked for other construction companies for many years before going out on his own. He started out at just 19 years old, working for a concrete construction company, where he was afforded his first opportunity to operate construction machinery. He then moved on to work for a plumbing contractor, where he performed trench work for tract homes. “My cousin was the superintendent for this plumbing contractor and they gave me a shot as one of their operators,” says Jones. “Digging for plumbing is not as simple as it may appear. It is a

technical job that needs to be done quickly and efficiently in order to be profitable. It requires great skill, requiring the operator to work from line of sight in most cases. I picked it up quickly and learned a lot from this early experience.” Jones eventually decided to go out on his own, doing much of the same type of work. He started Precision Backhoe in 2000 and hired a friend, Rhett Fogus, to help out who is still contributing to the success of the company. Jones incorporated in 2003, while also attaining his Class C contractors license and changing the name of his company to Pride Trenching Co. (Pride Trenching) in the process. According to Jones, the company still performs plumbing and other utility trench work, working on

around 150 houses a month. With their headquarters in Cherry Valley, the company does most of their trenching work from Highland to the Coachella Valley/Indio area. They currently do this work, primarily for three major plumbing contractors that concentrate on tract home jobs. “I have a crew of two to three guys that work for our steady plumbing companies, and we also have our landscape contractors license that has allowed us to open a new niche, working for cities, state parks and other agencies,” says Jones. “We now specialize in working within stream beds removing non-native plants and then replacing them with native species. We are currently working for the City of Aliso Viejo, California [ Continued on page 8 ]

State Parks and with the Laguna Canyon Foundation on the Aliso Viejo Creek Restoration Project.” On this particular project, Jones explains that the hardiest of these plants and most difficult to remove are the Arundo, an invasive, robust giant reed that grows nine to 30 feet tall. It grows in cane or bamboo-like clusters, absorbs water and spreads quickly, creating a problem for creek beds; drainage ditches and storm wash reservoirs throughout

Southern California. “We are tasked to remove an enormous amount of Arundo, among other non-native species, within a 3 ½ mile creek bed that runs to the ocean,” says Jones. “We have been on this particular project for almost two years and initially go in with our Cat mini excavators with thumb attachments to rip out as much of the plant material as possible. We then use our Cat track loaders equipped with Cat mulching masticators in order to mow down the material to ground level. We then apply an

aquatic habit spray that has to be routinely applied for around a year to fully eradicate the stubborn Arundo.” Jones explains that state grant funds are being utilized right now in an effort to remove these harmful plants. “The removal and replanting work can only be done between September and March, so as to not disturb the bird breeding season,” says Jones. “We have a crew, however, who goes in every day to the areas that have already been rehabilitated, and they water, weed and basically

maintain the already treated sections. We work in 15-acre parcels and have two sections to finish, beginning this September. Our goal is to achieve a 70 to 80 percent coverage of new and existing native species.” Pride Trenching is also currently working for The Wildlands Conservancy, a California nonprofit organization that buys, restores, and preserves nature preserves, and provides free environmental education programs for children.“We do a variety of work for The Wildlands

Conservancy, acting as a Swiss army knife, performing tasks like building rocks walls and ponds, cutting down trees and removing brush and more recently building a new 10-foot concrete culvert bridge,” says Jones. “Flooding seemed to wash away the previous bridge each year, and the new culvert bridge has performed beautifully, allowing the water to flow underneath, and preserving the bridge in the process.” The company is also currently busy on tract home trenching projects, working on around 10

home sites at a time, excavating and backfilling trench for plumbing, sewer, water and other utilities. Additionally, they are in negotiations to begin extensive brush clearing work for a major 36-hole golf course in Indio, as well as additional multipurpose work for Caltrans.

Lucas Jones is a hardcore, Caterpillar customer, and he has purchased around 15 machines from Johnson Machinery over the past 16 years. “I started out years ago operating another brand, but when the time came to buy new, I ran into a problem,” explains Jones. “Their finance department was simply not willing to help out a hard working 23-year-old with a dream, so a buddy of mine that worked at Johnson encouraged me to go and see what they could do for me.” Jones did just that and without any sort of hassle, Johnson got him into a brand new, fully loaded, Cat 420 backhoe with a cab. “Johnson Machinery financed me on the spot for the same price I would have paid for a base model machine from another brand. I have become friends with several individuals at Johnson, one that is one of my very best friends, Adam Stowers, to this day,” recalls Jones. "I cannot say enough about

my rep, Jose Farias. If I have an issue, Jose is out on our jobsite without delay. Everyone at Johnson has worked very hard to keep us happy and we appreciate their continued service and support.” Pride Trenching currently owns and operates nine Cat machines, including three Cat 305.5 mini excavators, two 305 open cab mini excavators, and an older 2006 305 mini excavator with more than 4,000 hours that is still working every day. Last year, Pride Trenching notably purchased one of the industry's most popular machines, a 2015 Cat 299 HXP compact track loader, equipped with a Cat mulching attachment, whose 39 carbide teeth can masticate just about anything in its path. Additionally, they have Cat 277C and Cat 247B multi-terrain loaders that work in tandem with the fleet of mini excavators. “Our most recent purchase was the 305E CR mini hydraulic excavator. “We run our

equipment for a couple of years and then trade for newer models. We just find that late model, low hour machines work best for our purposes and Johnson Machinery always has what we need,” says Jones. “I started out in this business with backhoes and although they do offer a little more power, I prefer the agility and movement we get from our mini excavators and track loaders. They come in handy for those tight quarter jobs and their light weight makes them easier to move around from job site to job site.” Pride Trenching Co. has come a long way from when a 19-year-old boy decided to go to work in the construction business some 20 years ago. “I like where we are at right now. The size of my company is right where I want it to be and I see a real future in the land restoration end of our business. I am very much looking forward to what the next 20 years has in store.” Cc

J&S Asphalt Leverages Industry Leading Crew and Staff Along with High-Quality Case Construction Machinery To Attain Optimum Efficiencies in Northern California Market

J&S Asphalt is a subsidiary of Johnson & Sampson Construction, Inc. and they have been serving the Northern California construction market since 1987. Doing business as J&S Asphalt, the company’s 45 employees provide asphalt maintenance for business owners, property owners, school districts and a long list of contractors and residential customers. Their work is primarily focused in Northern California from Yreka to Fresno on a variety of venues including apartments, shopping centers, commercial facilities and residential driveways. No job is too small and their growth has allowed the company to expand into Nevada. Roy Sampson and his business partner, Todd Johnson purchased the seal

coating division of an existing asphalt company back in 1987. Roy and Todd were friends and attending the same college when another mutual friend’s father decided to sell off a portion of his company. “We were just finishing up our first year in college when this opportunity became available,” says Sampson. “My thoughts were that we were both young and hungry and that there may never be a better time to give something like this a try. We took the plunge and got our start seal coating primarily residential

driveways.” The partners grew their business slow and steady by knocking on doors and following behind the paving contractor that sold them the business. “Before long we were picking up other contractors and they were feeding us leads as well and it eventually escalated into the commercial market,” says Sampson. “We have grown every year, with the exception of the last recession. The previous downturns really did not affect us because we were so young, and still living at home.”

Roy Sampson now serves as the company’s president, while Todd Johnson serves as the vice president and together they have grown their company to 45 employees and a backlog of work guaranteed to keep them busy into the foreseeable future. Northern California is known for its redwood forests, dramatic coastline, lush flowing green hills and hundreds of vineyards. It can also receive 15 to 50 inches of rain each year, and some areas of the Coastal Redwood Forests have had more than 100 inches of precipitation. If you are in the construction business, moisture and cool temperatures can be a concern; especially if you are in the seal coating business, where optimum

temperatures are expected to be 50 degrees or higher for proper application and curing. A large portion of J&S Asphalt’s (J&S) business is in seal coating. They also have a concrete division that provides complete concrete construction services, along with their maintenance division that offers everything from patching, overlays, striping, ADA compliance and other asphalt and concrete repairs. J&S also constructs concrete and asphalt custom game courts for sports such as tennis and basketball, and they will perform small asphalt paving jobs up to 50-tons. Applying seal coat in Northern California from the months of November through March can be a challenge and that is why
J&S gets most of this type of work done in the remaining months of the year. “Scheduling is key and finding enough dry days can be challenging, but we always find a way to get it done,” says Sampson. “In order to accomplish this, we rely on our field crew and staff to be as efficient as possible. When the weather does turn, we concentrate on the concrete portion of our business, as well as maintenance and repairs. We stay out of the heavy paving business by design, because it is the paving contractor that provides us with much of our seal coating work.” Remaining as efficient as possible means obtaining and utilizing the most reliable and technologically advanced equipment. When it comes to heavy machinery, J&S turns to companies like

Sonsray Machinery out of Sacramento for their equipment and service needs. J&S currently owns 12 pieces of heavy construction machinery and five of those units are Case machines. “We have three Case skid steer loaders, a Case mini excavator, and a Case asphalt roller,” says Sampson. “Sonsray Machinery is centrally located with several branches throughout California. This combined with their outstanding sales and service staff is what keeps us a loyal Case customer. Our sales rep, Bill Kruger is a great guy that follows through with his promises and responsibilities. We just purchased a new slot cutter and Bill was in our

office making sure that the fittings were correct and that everything was running smoothly. It is great to work with someone that is trustworthy and thorough.” J&S most recently purchased a new Case SV300 skid steer loader from Sonsray, with an operating weight of 8,300 lbs., a net power output of 84 HP and a lift capacity of 3,000 lbs. “Once we find something we like that works well for us, we tend to stick with it,” says Sampson. “Additionally, our operators prefer the Case controls and the power they get from the industry leading high flow output.” J&S Asphalt has built a reputation for their over the top customer service and quick response time. Sampson points out that the majority

of his company’s work is completed within one to three working days. On the other side of the coin, their work is very consistent with five to six jobs scheduled each day and a healthy backlog that will keep them busy months into the future. “We will continue our steady growth as we continue to search for more resourceful ways of doing business,” says Sampson. “We don’t need to get any larger, but only more efficient as we continue to upgrade our equipment fleet and methodology. The how and where to dispose of construction and demolition debris is becoming increasingly more difficult these days as the construction industry economy rebounds and the available sanitary landfill space fills up. Government regulations regarding waste management are compounding the dilemma for construction businesses and builders. In California, for example, the mandatory commercial recycling law (Assembly Bill 341) is very straightforward: Firms that generate 4 cubic yards of waste a week are required to recycle. The state’s goal is 75 percent recycling, composting or source reduction of solid waste by 2020, and to reduce greenhouse gas emissions. To reach that number an additional 23 million tons will need to be recycled, reduced or composted in less than four years. The combination of those factors — more construction, less available sanitary landfill space and clearly defined regulations — has helped create a business opportunity for firms such as SCOR Industries in Bloomington, California. Started by Norberto Sandoval in the 1970s, the Los Angeles-area company has a long history of

construction and demolition jobsite cleanup. More recently, SCOR Industries has transitioned into commercial, industrial and infrastructure resource recovery, calling itself the nation’s first global research center for resource recovery and zero waste. “The typical hauler focuses on finding a home for construction waste,” says Adolfo Sandoval, son of the founder and vice president of operations for SCOR Industries. “We take the opposite approach, trying to recover as much of the waste as we can. As a result of

the comprehensive services we offer, our company works on some of the largest, highest profile building projects in Southern California. Our customers like the unique way we manage jobsite waste and the recycling rates we can achieve.” GETTING A GOOD START SCOR Industries begins working on a project as soon as the contract is awarded. That is when the contractor has to provide an estimate of how much waste material is going to be generated. Municipalities require a waste management plan before a job begins.

“Our first step is to fill out the forms for the contractor so they can obtain a building permit,” says Jessy Cisneros, SCOR Industries recycling supervisor. “We have historical data going back 15 years that we use to help the contractor budget for how much waste is going to be generated, what type of materials are going to come out of the job. Based on the scope of the project, we can provide very accurate information on how much concrete, wood and other materials will turn into waste. The documentation we produce allows the contractor to get a building permit very quickly.” Once the contractor begins generating waste material, the SCOR Industries team is onsite, providing debris containment to keep the project in compliance. Using Bobcat® skid-steer loaders, attachments and large roll-off containers, the well-trained staff separates materials quickly and

dispatches full loads to the company’s 7-acre facility in Bloomington. If there is not sufficient space on the jobsite to separate the material, it is brought back to the SCOR Industries lot to be prepared for recycling. Each load of debris, accompanied by a work order for the project, passes over the firm’s sophisticated scale system in order to keep an accurate record of each client’s job. Once the roll-off containers are dumped, a pair of Doosan wheel loaders with buckets efficiently handle the waste material. For example, the wheel loaders put the wood into grinders for making nursery products, and metal goes into shredders. Concrete is crushed and sold as a base; gypsum goes to Bakersfield, California, to be used as a soil component; and plastic is shipped overseas where 100 percent of it is recycled. “We track the waste material from start to finish,” says Sandoval.
“While the goal of the state is to have 75 percent of the debris recycled, we have been able to achieve more than 90 percent recycled.” With contractors being required to properly dispose of their waste and provide documentation, SCOR Industries provides a valuable service. “Our clients really like the way we handle the process for them,” says Sandoval. “They also like the timely service we give them. We help keep jobs on schedule. Coming from a construction background, we understand schedules and how to make them work for our customers.” One customer that relies on SCOR Industries is Oltmans Construction Company, a full-service general contractor based in Whittier, California. “I can remember when this environment stuff was a real headache,” comments an Oltmans representative. “But not anymore.

Both Doosan wheel loaders, according to Sandoval, are operator favorites that offer superior comfort, reliability, simple maintenance and fuel efficiency. “With trucks arriving and departing throughout the day, these two machines move massive amounts of material,” says Sandoval. “They handle tons at a time. The technology behind the wheel loaders is very useful because of the volume we pick up and transport. These machines are the big boys in the yard.”

This type of equipment will likely continue to be needed around the SCOR Industries facility. “The demand for our line of work is very high right now,” says Sandoval. “Our plan is to manage growth by growing with our customers. “There is little doubt that the need for resource recovery will increase. Some people look at the regulations as being more stringent, but we are starting to understand that we have to recover more and we are running out of sanitary landfills. The public is beginning to be more responsible and proactive concerning the environment. That focus has created great opportunities for companies like ours.” Cc

MARK COMPANY OFFERS FULL TURN-KEY SERVICES THROUGH THEIR INDIVIDUALLY MANAGED SPECIALIZED DIVISIONS Written By: Brian Hoover
Mark Company was originally incorporated in 1964 with the company’s first 20 years focusing primarily on fine grade and paving work. In 1989, Mark Company was purchased by the Pack family and soon began to grow into other areas of general engineering contracting such as concrete, pipeline, and site grading. Over the past 27 years and through the leadership of the superintendents, estimators, project managers and foreman working with the family, Mark Company has completed thousands of infrastructure projects in residential tracts, multi-family

housing complexes, commercial and industrial projects throughout Southern California. The company is diversified with six separate divisions including rough grading, wet utilities, dry utilities, site concrete, decorative concrete, and asphalt paving. Brett Pack serves as the company president and he explains why his family-owned business made the decision to expand into so many disciplines. “Our decision to offer a variety of trades was intentional for several reasons. I feel that when a construction company expands too much in any one division,

they open themselves up to quality control issues in hiring only the industries best. There are only so many good employees out there by not growing too large in a division size we are able to control the quality of our personnel.” says Pack. “Multiple trades also allow us to stretch out our economic cycle with the understanding that one or more trades may be more successful than others during said cycle.” Pack also realizes that offering and maintaining several trades can have its challenges. “California is an incredibly competitive

market and specializing in a given trade is what seems to set competitors apart. It is very difficult to compete with the aggressive pricing in southern California without specializing in a particular discipline,” says Pack. “Our success comes from having multiple estimators, superintendents and project managers that are empowered and deal specifically with their particular trade. This allows our company to cover a wide spread of work and in effect still specialize.” According to Pack, offering multiple trades has other advantages as well. “We are proud of what we are currently working on and have completed some very significant development projects where we are performing the site work as a turnkey contractor,” says Pack. “By turn key, I mean that we are doing the grading, wet utilities, dry utilities,

site work and asphalt paving on these projects.” Mark Company is accomplishing this on some significant projects including the A-Town Project in Anaheim for Lannar Corp., who is building between 1,400 to 1,746 condominiums and apartments, along with over 50,000 square feet of office and retail space over the next few years. Mark Company is also performing a turnkey package on the Uptown Newport Project for Shopoff Development. This is a mixed-use development being completed in two phases, with up to 1,244 residential units, 11,500 square feet of retail space, and 2 acres of park space. “With every passing year, we are acquiring more of this type of work where we can assist the client with the entire development package,” says Pack. “This offers a significant value to our clients by eliminating multiple
contracts and the challenges of managing multiple contractors.” Mark Company has also earned a reputation for taking on complex projects that other construction firms may not have the experience to complete. An example of this would be a project that Mark Company recently completed in Downtown Long Beach as a subcontractor to Hill Contracting, who was contracted by AMLI Residential. “This 84-inch storm drain project provided us with a significant challenge in that it was located in running sand and we had to excavate to depths of up to 24 feet,” says Pack. “We purchased a new Volvo EC480E 378 horsepower hydraulic excavator specifically for this job, and even with its tremendous digging depth, it was almost bottoming out in certain areas.” Pack goes on to explain that due to multiple

utility lines crossing one another at the bottom of the massive pit, it was necessary to lower a Volvo EC35 compact excavator and a Volvo ECR58D midi excavator in to dig around and underneath the existing services. Mark Company just recently completed this $2.5 million storm drain project that also utilized several Volvo 120L wheel loaders. Mark Company has another job currently in progress on Archibald Avenue in Eastville that is another deep sewer storm drain project that includes the installation of cement-mortar lined steel pipe water lines. The Volvo EC480E was again utilized on this project to dig down to a depth of up to 24 feet deep in order to install the 12” water lines. Overhead power lines prevented Mark Company from using their Volvo EC480E in certain areas, so they we brought in their Volvo ECR88 midi excavator and lowered it into the open trench to get around this obstacle. When it comes to construction machinery, Mark Company is again extremely diversified. “I don’t really have any specific loyalty to any particular brand. I go out

and talk to my competitors and check out rental machines, and then I formulate an opinion,” says Pack. “In my opinion, a few select manufacturers seem to excel in specific equipment niches. For instance, we go with John Deere skip loaders because we feel they have the best machine currently on the market. For this same reason, we run Cat scrapers. For excavators and wheel loaders we go with Volvo, because I feel they are superior in this category. Additionally, if we are ever in the market for articulated dump trucks, we would most certainly go with Volvo” Mark Company currently has a fleet of 50 machines, 20 of which are Volvo. “Our sales rep, Ed Galindo, is the reason we originally looked at Volvo. Ed has always been on top of things and he has been there for us when we’ve needed him most. For instance, when we needed a major repair on one of our larger Volvo machines, Ed and the folks at Volvo worked with us on financing that repair. They have always been easy to deal with,” says Pack. “In my initial research, I found that contractors were

routinely running Volvo machines three to five thousand hours longer than the competitive brands. Another key point was when we checked on fuel consumption and the Volvo pre-tier IV machines were considerably better in this area than their competition. We also found that the Volvo machines achieved their operating horsepower at a lower RPM and as a result, this reduces engine wear and consequently the engines last longer.” Mark Company buys and holds onto their heavy equipment for as long as 20 years and Volvo’s long-term performance was an important factor. “We are running a few Volvo machines right now that are at 10,000 hours and our maintenance costs are very low on all of our Volvo equipment. Gabriel Sanchez started his own tree trimming and landscaping business back in 1990 with just one laborer. He worked hard and quickly earned a reputation for offering top quality work at a fair price. He continued to grow his company, adding employees along the way, until eventually acquiring his contractor’s license in 2006. This is when the company really took

off; adding additional services like hardscaping, concrete flat work, irrigation and most recently a demolition division. Sanchez’s company has now grown to 16 employees and the jobs have grown larger as well. The company now works throughout much of the Southland with the bulk of their projects being performed in Los Angeles County. “I have developed a

Gabriel and his employees did most everything by hand for many years, still doing it to perfection, but taking much more time in the process. As he began renting machines, he saw first hand the value that a skid steer or compact excavator can have on a job and the bottom line. “We purchased our first John Deere machine three years ago from Coastline Equipment. It was a 328D skid steer loader and boy did that single machine with all of the attachments make a difference. Sanchez also recently purchased two brand new Vermeer wood chippers to aid in his ever-expanding tree service business. “We used John Deere Financing on all of the equipment we have purchased and they have been great to work with,” says Sanchez. “I also can not say enough about the people at Coastline Equipment. I started out working with Fabian Ortega and now work with JR Van Osten and both of these guys have really treated us right. They have been there for me and my company every step of the way.” According to Gabriel Sanchez, his companies growth is somewhat tied to finding the right people to work at his company. “We have been successful so far because everyone of us truly cares about the customer and we take a tremendous amount of pride in our work. I must
say that it is very hard to find good people, but we do find them and our growth is in their hands,” says Sanchez. “I think we are going to continue to grow in all areas, particularly in demolition. We are taking on more and more of this work and are currently taking down an entire home and demoing its foundation in the Santa Monica Mountains. We are very busy in all aspects of our work and it seems that each division peaks at a different time of the year and that has contributed to our growth. I love what we do and every day is different.
