hen Sully-Miller Contracting recently began work on a $5 million, one-mile long storm drain project for the City of Rancho Cucamonga, they knew they would need a very large excavator onsite to handle the installation of the 96” concrete storm drain. Like they have done so many times before, Sully-Miller contacted Heavy Equipment Rentals at their Corona location and requested a unit to handle the job. This was a very big job and in order to accommodate the request as best as possible, HER General Manager, Kent Porter immediately made the additional acquisition of a John Deere 850D LC excavator. The HER fleet has all sizes of excavators, but none quite as large as the 185,876 lb., 532 hp John Deere 850D LC excavator with a digging depth of 31 ft. 5 in. ike a favorite pair of shoes, when we all find something we really like and feel comfortable with, we tend to stay with it throughout our lives. This also seems to ring true with many of the relationships we build over our years in business. Premiere Engineering & Grading out of Anaheim, California has been doing business with Savala Equipment Rentals since their inception back in 1990. Because I am a general engineering contractor operating in today’s competitive environment, I have to ensure that we rent operated and bare rentals at the most competitive prices and Savala takes an interest in our bottom line by continually offering competitive rates.” Premiere Engineering & Grading recently began working out at Scripps Memorial Hospital as a subcontractor to McCarthy Building Companies, Inc. McCarthy is currently constructing a new 383,000 square-foot $456 million Cardiovascular Institute and 26,000 square-foot Central Energy Plant in La Jolla for Scripps Memorial Hospital. The basic earthwork including grading, excavating and a tunnel dig that will connect the basement and ground levels to the existing hospital was subcontracted to Premiere Engineering & Grading. By jobs end it will be necessary to export approximately 100,000 cubic yards of earth from

the site, which will require a digging depth of around 35 feet within the limits of the shoring and then there is the central plant excavation of approximately 60 feet in depth. After the buildings are raised it will be necessary to backfill some 25,000 cubic yards of dirt and all of this earthwork of course called for professional and productive operators and equipment. Premiere once again turned to Savala Equipment Rentals to fulfill this need. Scott Damon, Vice President of Sales for Savala explains, “We supplied a Hitachi ZX450 and a Cat 330 excavator with operators to Premiere for all of the mass excavation and footing work out at Scripps. We also provided Premiere with a Komatsu WA500 7-yard and a Komatsu WA450 5-yard wheel loader with operators to remove the spoil and then backfill around the walls after completion. As an C-12 Earthwork & Paving Contractor, Thomas Whedon Construction specializes in soil stabilization, asphalt pulverization, cold milling and general grading work.
