W
hen you stop and think about all of the trades that work on any given jobsite, it seems to me that the commercial plumber has to be one of the most organized and intelligent. They are almost always the first subcontractor to arrive on the jobsite to work with the grading and excavating contractor. The minute the pads are spun off, the plumbing contractor is the first one in the ground, laying out the

building plumbing, even before the foundation is poured. A good commercial plumber has to have knowledge of so much more than just designing, installing, repairing and maintaining piping systems. They must also have intimate knowledge of a buildings foundation, rebar, framing, structural steel, mechanical and electrical, all the way through the hard lids, the drywall and fire ratings. Then, of course, the finish trades show up

and the plumber now is working with and around the tile setters and Terrazzo contractors and so on. The plumbing contractor is truly the last one to leave a job after interacting with virtually every trade imaginable. Having the right contractor for every trade is vital to a structure’s longevity. As a commercial plumber we work directly with the grader from the very start to make the utility installation process as productive as it can possibly be. For instance, if there are utilities going through a 20’ deep heavy fill area, we will work with the contractor and let them get up to 10 feet before laying our plumbing in. This way it is not necessary to dig back down 20 feet later, running the risk of disturbing other newly installed utilities. Today the company focuses primarily on public works facilities. Advance Plumbing has performed their services for hundreds of educational facilities and is currently partnering with Echo Pacific Construction to provide plumbing for the new Vista Del Mar Elementary School located in the Ocean View Hills community. This new K-6 school will be the home of 850 very lucky students that will benefit greatly from the technology enhanced classrooms. Jon Strelic continues, “I have owned and operated Advance Plumbing for the past 20 years and schools have been our main business for as far back as 40 years. We are a union plumbing contractor and so, of course, we almost strictly chase the prevailing wage projects. However, we also do quite a bit of private work, like the four-story hotel currently being built by Lusardi

Construction down in Imperial Beach. Lusardi is one of our most preferred contractors and we are very proud to be a part of this project. One thing we have learned over the years is that there can definitely be conflicts when a plumbing and an underground contractor attempt to work together. The site utilities typically are installed per survey staking; therefore, the coordination between civil and plumbing can conflict. We may, for instance, stub a sewer line out at 15-feet off of ‘C’ line, and the point of connection ends up being 30feet off of ‘C’ line, and we are left with a 15-foot bust in pipe horizontally. Poor coordination between trades can mean missed foundations, footings and walls, resulting in lost time, money and reputation. 8
Because of our experiences, we decided to get involved with the underground civil utilities back in 2005. To start things off, we purchased our first Caterpillar backhoe loaders from Hawthorne CAT. Since then we have added several more Cat backhoes, excavators and mini-excavators, as well as water trucks to our equipment fleet. Now we are able to provide our owners with a complete turnkey system from the street all the way through the roof. We organize this in harmony between our civil and plumbing divisions, eliminating any finger pointing or lost work time.” The Vista Del Mar Elementary School is a great example of Advance Plumbing’s civil and plumbing divisions working

together. Advance Plumbing completed all of the street utilities and site utilities, including the fire mains, sewer mains and storm drains. Advance is also installing all of the building plumbing up through the roof. This is a very large project for Advance Plumbing and the City wants it completed in time for the new school year, which begins in June of 2012. The $1.8 million utilities project began in September of 2011 and has required the excavation of many deep utilities, some down more than 25 feet. Jon continues, “The time frame is really the biggest challenge on this project. We are working for Echo Pacific and they are typically very aggressive with their timetables. simultaneously and have been running separate crews, including overtime, to stay ahead of the rainy season and on schedule. Everything is going very smoothly and all of the trades are working very well together.” Advance Plumbing is also getting ready to perform all of the building plumbing for Lusardi Construction on the new San Marcos High School modernization and reconstruction project. This is Advance Plumbing’s largest single project to date, as well as one of California’s largest high school construction projects. With a $180 million price tag, the project will include an interim campus for 2,400 students and will double the existing classroom space by 50 percent. www.calcontractor.com
Advance Plumbing had another school project last year that required trenching for over 2,500 linear feet of interior pipe. All of the interior work would normally require hand digging and jack hammer work. Now, with the purchase of their mini-excavators, they are able to get into any area to work. They even have a unit that will reduce down to 36” so that they can move through any standard door opening. Jon comments, “Being in the plumbing business for 30 years, I have had the opportunity to see every brand of construction machinery at work. Even when we were renting, we always preferred the Caterpillar brand. I have gotten to know many individuals at Hawthorne CAT and they have treated me very well
from the get go, taking care of our equipment needs promptly and cost effectively. Today we own (2) Cat backhoes, (3) Cat excavators and (2) Cat skid steers, all purchased from Hawthorne CAT. Having our own fleet of machines gives us an advantage in the bidding process to help make us even more competitive. We recently added a state-of-the-art Trimble Robotic Total Station that works in conjunction with our inhouse BIM modeling department. im Wilson was brought up in the underground construction business and started working for his father’s company straight out of high school. Then in 1996, Tim took the leap into his own venture and started TIM’s Tractor Service and eventually TTS Engineering Inc. Tim has more than 26 years experience, Tim’s company specializes in underground utilities, excavation, grading and site demolition and also added a site concrete division. Being able to self-perform and at the same time providing quality workmanship in 10

both the public and private industries is what has kept TTS Engineering viable even in these lean times. TTS Engineering, Inc. is currently relocating utilities for LBA Realty at Park Place Plaza in Irvine, CA. A brand new 60,000 sq. ft. parking structure and a 30,000 sq. ft. fitness center is being constructed and TTS has been subcontracted to relocate the 12” IRWD water line and 15” sewer main. President and Owner, Tim Wilson further explains, “The Park Place Plaza job has had its challenges with some engineering conflicts, waiting on approvals from agencies, keeping all the tenants with water and some tricky elevation issues due to existing utilities, but we have seen all of this before and the job is for the most part going very smoothly. We are working for the contractor who is going to turn the pads over to the builder and once the parking structure
and fitness center is constructed, we will return sometime next year to finish all of the surrounding site work. We will also be performing a small amount of paving, which is something we have been doing a lot more of lately for our clients. For instance we just finished a $500,000 paving job for the Irvine Company and we will soon be starting a 900,000 sq. ft. slurry seal/striping project at Bella Terra in Huntington Beach. In addition, we just completed a $2 million job for TIC at the Pacific Arts Plaza in Costa Mesa, where we worked 7 days a week /12 hour days in

order to meet a December 21st deadline for the client. TTS also just completed a project for CMSD in Costa Mesa as a prime contractor where they removed and replaced 600 l/f of 10” Sewer line on South Coast Drive, while working at night and running a 24-hour bypass to keep the sewer flowing. The job was very challenging due to the soil conditions and depths of the sewer. TTS main focus on safety was very important to the project while only being able to install 24 ft a night and keep the job 100% safe. I am very happy to have as much work as we do right now and I feel it is right to thank companies like the Irvine Company, Cuesta Construction for stepping up and 12

continuing to develop in these trying times. am Wathen initially got his start in 1985 when he began renting construction equipment on a bare and operated basis. By 1991, Sam made the full plunge and officially became a general engineering contractor going by the name, SC Valley Engineering, Inc. Now for more than 20 years, they have dedicated their efforts to providing the very best quality pipeline construction and design to San Diego County and the surrounding area. SC Valley Engineering has extensive experience working with local, state and federal regulatory/resource agencies such as the California Coastal Commission, Regional Water Quality Control Board, California Department of Fish and Game, U.S. Navy, Caltrans, Transit Districts and many other agencies. With a major focus on wet utilities including water, sewer and storm drain, SC Valley Engineering works primarily for the City of San Diego, the Helix Water District, the City of La Mesa, Caltrans and a few other select agencies. The Palm City Trunk Sewer Project is a typical example of SC Valley Engineering’s capabilities. Work on this project began in December of 2011 and it scheduled to be completed sometime in June of 2012. With an approximate price tag of $3.2 million the job required the removal of an existing sewer main, that was deemed unable to handle the load that the growing residential area was putting on it daily. The existing main ran from 15th St. through 14th St. and all the way up and through most of Palm Ave. in the Palm City area of San Diego. After removing the existing

pipeline, SC Valley Engineering has begun installing approximately 6,000 lineal feet of 18” sewer main, as well as another 1,000 feet of 24” of main and 1,000 feet of 8” sewer line. In addition it will be necessary for SC Valley Engineering to install all new sewer laterals to the residences, along with approximately 60 new manholes. By jobs end the contractor will also perform a large amount of private re-plumbs directly into the new sewer system. Sam Wathen, President and Owner of SC Valley Engineering comments, “Although Palm Ave. is a very large and busy thoroughfare, the job has gone very smooth thus far. There is some night work and traffic control has been and will continue to be a challenge until the job is completed next month. One of the more interesting parts of this job so far has been our use of a technique known as pipe bursting. The initial plan was to go with directional drilling through some existing private property and residential backyards where 8” sewer line needed to be replaced. Instead we elected to use a different trenchless method known as pipe bursting. We first dug launching and receiving pits and then placed an expander head into the existing sewer line. Next we pulled the large pipe bursting head through the old line with the use of pulling rods, a pulling machine, a retaining device www.calcontractor.com

and a hydraulic power pack. The assembly is pulled through the host pipe, crushing it into the existing soil, making room for the new larger pipe being pulled along from behind. The pipe bursting method has saved us both time and money on this project.” SC Valley Engineering also owns and operates an entire fleet of heavy machinery for conventional trenching and sewer main work. On the Palm City job, they have a Cat 325 and Cat 320 Excavator, along with a Cat 938 Wheel Loader and two Cat 246 Skid Steer Loaders available for all of the heavy earth removal and backfill work. Sam Wathen continues, “ Our heavy equipment fleet is about 80 percent Caterpillar and over the past five or six years we have established a very close working relationship with the folks at Hawthorne CAT. We are more than satisfied with their service and staff and the way they treat the small to medium size contractor. hen owner of FYDAQ, Mike Craft was asked how he got into the underground utilities construction business, he commented, “sometimes jobs find you”. Mike Craft began his career in construction while still in high school and one thing led to another and his career remained on the same path. Mike comments, “We started out in 1993 like so many other construction companies, robbing Peter to pay Paul. You know I really need to thank all of our suppliers for loyally supporting our
company over the years. We have benefited their business and they have greatly benefited ours and that is how it should be.” FYDAQ began by performing sewer to house connections, channel entries and other basic jobs. Today, FYDAQ is capable of constructing all sizes of water, sewer, and storm drain projects. Mike Craft continues, “We work primarily for three or four select customers and we find this much easier to manage. We have had to go out and find some public works jobs and other miscellaneous type work, however for the most part our select list of clients have kept us very busy. It might have looked much different on the orange county contracting front if not for the aggressive participation of the Irvine Co devloping several Planing areas. They have been
the prominent builder over the past three years and we are thankful for every job we can do for them. Even today it is easy to grow in this business, but it is very difficult to manage sustainable growth. This is probably the most difficult part of our business today. Well that and the 91 Freeway. I mean it would be very easy to go out and purchase say 10 or 12 excavators right now, but that would not be sustainable. We are very busy right now, but who knows what tomorrow will bring. That is why we utilize companies like Westrax Machinery and ASAP Heavy Equipment Rentals. We own and operate a small fleet of Hitachi 330 excavators, Volvo loaders and just recently purchased a new John Deere 644 wheel loader, but we subsidize our inventory by working with Dennis

McShane who is our representative for Westrax Machinery and ASAP. For instance we are currently renting a large LiuGong excavator right now and look to be renting four LiuGong’s next week. LiuGong has all the necessary engineering up front with a lot of American made parts. I started from scratch back in 1993 and I am happy to support Westrax Machinery and their new line of equipment. I feel strongly that they will have the staying power and continue to grow in the Southern California construction industry.” FYDAQ recently finished a $500,000 to $600,000 job in San Marcos for TRI Pointe Homes where they installed all of the underground wet utilities, including sewer, water and storm drain. They are also very busy working at the former area for the Wild Rivers theme park and the Lion Country Safari. Mike Craft continues, “We are installing around 1,700 feet of 24” steel pipe up and over Lake Forest Drive for the Irvine Company, in addition to approximately 13,000 feet of sewer main and another 13,000 feet of water
main at a new Irvine Company apartment community. I think we can all go back to work now and I think the bottom has been had. I also feel that it will remain extremely competitive for the next five to eight years. The trick is to achieve sustainable growth and keep a constant watch on the bottom line.” FYDAQ is headquartered in Fullerton, California where they employ approximately 40 individuals. Mike concludes, “We bring our team members in very selectively and our turnover rate is very low. Each and every employee here at FYDAQ is an integral part of the success of this company. The new L60G, L70G and L90G Wheel Loaders from Volvo Construction Equipment The latest additions to the G-Series wheel loaders from Volvo Construction Equipment are the versatile L60G, L70G, and L90G midsized machines. Not only does the loader arms’ patented TP linkage offer superior breakout and lifting forces, they also remain perfectly parallel throughout the lifting range — ensuring exceptional load stability. This combination of power throughout the lift cycle, parallel movement and long reach makes the L60G, L70G and L90G ideal in material handling jobs and where fast work cycles are needed. These new machines meet the requirements of the Tier 4i emissions legislation that came into force on January 1, 2012. The L60G, L70G, and L90G are all fitted with a Volvo 6-liter, 6-cylinder turbocharged V-ACT (Volvo Advanced Combustion Technology) off-highway diesel engine, which features cooled gas recirculation and a particulate filter with active regeneration. The diesel particulate filter (DPF) temporarily holds the particulate matter and then incinerates it, further reducing emissions. This process is conducted without any loss of performance or operation. Producing between 161 and 173 hp (120 and 129 kW), depending on the model, these three units provide high torque at low engine speeds. These new machines meet the requirements of the Tier 4i emissions legislation that came into force on January 1, 2012. The L60G, L70G, and L90G are all fitted with a Volvo 6-liter, 6-cylinder turbocharged V-ACT (Volvo Advanced Combustion Technology) off-highway diesel 22
engine, which features cooled gas recirculation and a particulate filter with active regeneration. As well as meeting the low emissions requirements of the legislation, the D6 engine also leads the industry in terms of fuel efficiency, reliability, and noise. The production of torque and power at low engine speeds, combined with load-sensing hydraulics, promotes work at a lower rpm, which in turn extends engine life, lowers fuel usage, and dramatically reduces noise. Load-sensing hydraulics delivers power to hydraulic functions only when needed, eliminating unnecessary oil pumping. Fitted with high capacity axial piston pumps with variable flow, the working hydraulic pressure has been increased from 3,771 to 4,496 psi. These improvements provide superior control of the attachments

and loading, as well as higher breakout forces and faster lift and tilt functions. The servo controls are mounted in an adjustable console, and pilotoperated hydraulics enable attachments to be easily controlled with minimal effort and high precision. Also, to encourage operators to work smoothly, the eco accelerator pedal applies an appropriate amount of mechanical back pressure, encouraging operating techniques with low fuel consumption. The G-Series comes with a wide range of Volvo attachments to suit the application. Attachment brackets make changing tools fast and easy. New Cat¤ E Series Mini Hydraulic Excavators Get New Engin New COMPASS Monitor, Refined Auxiliary Hydraulics and Eco Mode Savings The five new compact-radius CatN E Series Mini Hydraulic Excavators 303.5ECR, 304E CR, 305E CR, 305.5E CR and 308E CR SB all use new engines that meet Stage IIIA /Tier 4 Interim emissions regulations and incorporate new features such as the COMPASS control panel, standard high-ambient cooling package, more efficient auxiliary hydraulics, and redesigned control layout. The new models are designed to carry on the solid performance of their D Series predecessor, while adding even greater value for the customer. All the E Series models are equipped with a new digital control panel that is specially designed for Cat Mini Excavators COMPASS Complete Operation, Maintenance, Performance, And Security System. Built into the COMPASS monitor are an antitheft system, which requires a five-digit alphanumeric password to start the machine, and an Economy Mode feature (3.5- to 5.5-ton machines), which potentially can lower fuel use up to 20 percent by adjusting engine speed. An automatic engine-idle system drops engine rpm to idle after 4 seconds of inactivity. Also available through the COMPASS panel is a continuousflow feature for auxiliary hydraulics, which maintains selected flow without operator intervention. An adjustable 24
auxiliary-flow control for work tools also is new. Both main-line and optional secondary auxiliary-hydraulic systems can be adjusted on a scale of 1-15 via the monitor for added control when handling, for example, a tilting bucket/coupler or thumb. Also, a number of different work-tools come preset into the control panel for the operator to choose. Additional refinements for the five E Series models include a standard high-ambient cooling package, electric fuel-pumppriming system, a four-post canopy (3.5- to 5.5-ton machines), new ergonomic joysticks, and relocation of a number of controls for operator convenience for example, twospeed travel switch to the blade lever, secondary auxiliary hydraulic engagement to the left joystick, and manual pattern changer from the floor to the COMPASS monitor. All new E Series machines use an end-damping system in both the boom and stick cylinders to reduce shock loads and to reduce material spillage. E Series sticks are thumb-ready, with brackets welded in place and relief valves already built into the main valve.

The 308E CR SB will be available only in a Swing Boom configuration. The new model is designed with enhanced stability, compared with its predecessor, and, optional counterweights are available for use in extreme situations when added stability is required. The 308E CR SB also gets a 17-percent boost in engine horsepower, which translates into faster hydraulics for improved travel speed, maneuverability and grade climbing. In addition, the 308E CR SB is fitted with a larger cab than its D Series predecessor, and is available only as a cab model, with standard air conditioning, heated air suspension seat, and radio. John Deere Launches Efficient K?Series Crawler Dozers Models with Hydrostatic Transmissions MOLINE, Illinois —John Deere is adding four models to the K-Series crawler dozer line, providing contractors an emissions-certified machine that affords higher productivity, increased uptime and lower daily operating costs in earth moving and grading applications. The 550K, 650K, 700K and 750K crawler dozers build off the popular and successful 850K that launched in 2011. "We're excited to add four efficient and productive crawler dozer models to the John Deere line-up," said Jon Gilbeck, global product marketing manager for crawler dozers, John Deere Construction & Forestry. "Our customers wanted an IT4 engine, a quieter and more comfortable cab and the unsurpassed operating ease and maneuverability they have come to expect from John Deere. With the success of the 850K, we only thought it was logical to expand the K-Series' offerings." A John Deere PowerTech™ 6.8-L (700K, 750K) or 4.5L (550K, 650K) IT4 diesel engine provides an increase in horsepower from the previous J-Series, along with increases in overall tractor weight, resulting in more productive machines. The horsepower ranges include: 85 hp (550K), 101 hp (650K), 125 hp (700K), and 155-165 hp (750K) at 1,800 RPM. The K-Series uses cooled EGR technology with exhaust filters, Deere's simple, fuel efficient, field proven and fully integrated solution to meet 2012 EPA emissions regulations. The engine's diesel particulate filters are cleaned automatically during routine operation, eliminating the need to idle down for maintenance and increasing overall machine productivity. In addition, filter access is easy, should it need servicing. 26
The John Deere IT4 engine also offers operation on slopes up to 45 degrees while maintaining adequate oil flow to machine systems. A hydraulically driven cool-on-demand fan operates only as needed, decreases cab and bystander noise levels, and cuts fuel consumption. A reversing feature is standard for the 750K and optional for the 550K, 650K, and 700K to blow out debris. Both the 700K and 750K come equipped with John Deere's exclusive V-Cool package. This system isolates coolers from dust and engine heat for increased efficiency and durability. In addition, the V-Cool is positioned behind the heavy-duty grille and fan, making the coolers less vulnerable to the rigors of the worksite. The four new crawler models come equipped with hydrostatic transmissions, a feature John Deere pioneered in crawler dozers in North America in 1976. These transmissions provide customers infinite speed control, power management, live power turns, counter rotation while staying in gear, and dynamic braking. In addition, Total Machine Control allows customized machine response that can be tailored to meet the needs of individual operators. Inside the cab, operators will find increased comfort thanks to quieter operation, larger access doors, and a

standard air suspension seat. Sound dampening in the cab reduces noise levels up to a 50-percent on the 550K and 650K. Best-in-class visibility to the blade and jobsite is provided via ample glass and well-positioned in-cab components. The models also feature a sealed switch model (SSM) with keyless start and a coded-security start feature, a 12-volt electrical accessory outlet and an integrated grade control monitor. Onboard diagnostics include a standard display monitor that provides real time values for every temperature, pressure, and speed sensor on the machine. The crawler dozers constantly monitor transmission temperature to avoid damage to the hydrostat system. If the transmission temperature is too cold or too hot, the associated light on the monitor will illuminate. For those fleet managers, owners or operators looking to get the most out of their equipment, the JDLink™ Ultimate system continuously collects and transmits machine data for machine management via mobile phone technology. United Rentals Completes Offering of Notes to Finance RSC Acquisition United Rentals, Greenwich, Conn., on March 9 announced that its subsidiary, UR Financing Escrow Corp., has completed offerings of $1.325 billion aggregate principal amount of its 7.625 percent senior unsecured notes due 2022, $750 million aggregate principal amount of its 7.375 percent senior unsecured notes due 2020 and $750 million aggregate principal amount of its 5.75 percent senior secured notes due 2018. Each series was sold to qualified institutional buyers in accordance with Rule 144A under the Securities Act of 1933, as amended, and outside the United States in accordance with Regulation S under the Securities Act. Upon consummation of United Rentals merger transaction with RSC Holdings, announced on Dec. 16, 2011, the senior unsecured notes and the senior secured notes will be assumed by the company's subsidiary UR Merger Sub Corp. The senior unsecured notes will be unsecured obligations of UR Merger Sub and will be guaranteed on a senior basis by the parent company and, subject to limited exceptions, current and future domestic subsidiaries of UR Merger Sub. The senior secured notes will be secured obligations of UR Merger Sub, guaranteed on a senior basis by the parent company and, subject to limited exceptions, current and future domestic subsidiaries of UR Merger Sub. The senior secured notes will be secured on a second-priority basis by liens on the assets of UR Merger Sub and the guarantors that secure the obligations under the company s existing senior secured asset-based revolving credit facility and any other first-lien debt, subject to certain limited exceptions. The gross proceeds from the sale of the notes have been placed into separate escrow accounts, together with contributions from United Rentals (North America) (URNA), a wholly owned subsidiary of United Rentals, sufficient to pay for any escrow fees and interest on the notes through April 25, 2012. URNA also has agreed to continue to deposit such amounts on a monthly basis until the escrowed funds are released, as described below. Following release of the proceeds of the offerings from escrow upon consummation of the merger, UR Merger Sub will use the net proceeds from the offerings to pay the cash consideration for the merger transaction, to repay certain indebtedness of RSC Holdings, including RSC Holdings senior secured asset-based revolving credit facility, 10 percent senior secured notes due 2017 and 9.5 percent senior notes due 2014, to repay borrowings under the company's senior secured asset-based revolving credit facility, and to pay fees and expenses.
