Superior Quality & Performance (Below) Martin and Jack Matich in the 1950s.
.....The Early Years – 1918 to 1950 Matich Corporation was originally founded in 1918 by John Matich. Now, 90 years later, Matich Corp. is one of the most experienced and respected construction firms in America. It really all began when John Matich arrived in the United States from Yugoslavia back in 1907, when he set out for Butte, Montana to care for his widowed sister and her children. A few years later, John, his sister and her family and his cousin Nicholas moved to California in search of a better life for everyone. John began working for several construction companies in the Los Angeles area and later settled in as a concrete paving superintendent with Kaiser Paving. By 1918, John Matich had learned his trade well and struck out on his own to specialize in concrete paving. The John Matich Co. was the original name, and it all started quite unceremoniously working with a wooden concrete batch plant and horse-drawn mechanized paving equipment. Opportunities were plentiful in California as there were not many concrete paving businesses at that time. John seized the opportunity and by the end of WWI, he had developed his vision into a successful construction company made up of hard working relatives and other valuable employees.
The early 1920’s brought many wonderful new relationships and experiences to John Matich. More specifically in 1921, John married Williamina Davidson, a native of Scotland. Williamina worked right alongside John for many years, serving as the company’s bookkeeper until 1927. In addition to immediate family, as many as three generations of employee families have faithfully worked for the company over the years. The 1920’s also brought the advent of state-ofthe-art equipment, which more than paid for itself with the high quality of workmanship it was able to provide. These equipment advancements would come just in time for Matich who was beginning the construction of Highway 99, which was the predecessor to Highway 10, one of the heaviest traveled freeways in Southern California. In the early years, the company performed its work primarily in Riverside and San Bernardino Counties. However as more work became available, they quickly branched out to most all of Southern California and even began work in other neighboring states. In 1923, Matich moved their headquarters to Lake Elsinore, California. This was also the year that John’s cousin, Nikolas Matich would join the

company and the official name was changed to Matich Brothers Co. to reflect his addition to the firm. Looking for a more central location, the company moved their base of operations to Colton, California in 1938, where they remained until November of 2006 when they moved to their brand new facility in San Bernardino, at the old Norton Airbase. The early years could be characterized as a time spent constructing major highways. However in 1934, Matich secured the first of many airfield construction projects. Under the direction of then Colonel Hap Arnold, who later ascended to the rank of General and assumed command of the U.S. Air Force, Matich made numerous modifications to March Air Force Base in Riverside. WWII brought a major decline in highway construction and fortunately for Matich, military base construction was there to fill the void. From 1942 to 1946, Matich had a hand in the construction of several military bases including Norton Air Force Base in San Bernardino, California. Matich constructed many of the improvements at Norton for more than 50 years, until it was converted into a civilian airport and commercial development center in the 1990’s. During this period, Matich
4
even rebuilt the streets in and around Norton under a $4.5 million contract in 1995. John Matich was fortunate to have two sons, John N. “Jack” Matich and Martin Matich; two young men eager to do their part in their father’s company. Both brothers would soon be thrust into major roles in the company sooner then they may have anticipated. In 1946, after serving his country in WWII in the South Pacific, Jack returned to Matich Bros. to assume the position of Chief of Field Operations. Martin, after graduating from the University of Notre Dame in 1949, also returned to the company as an engineer/estimator. Company founder, John Matich died in 1950, leaving behind heavy hearts and big shoes to fill. In addition at this time, Uncle Nikolas made the decision to retire from his long standing position at Matich Bros. This thrust Jack and Martin into the position of leadership and the ultimate responsibility for the future of Matich Bros. The brothers continued to pursue highway and airfield work throughout California, but soon they would make the decision to expand their company’s scope and reach.

.....A Time of Transition - 1950 to 2000
In 1954, Matich initiated a 10 year joint venture with M.M. Sundt of Tucson, Arizona for the purpose of collaborating on highway and military work in Arizona and California. This joint venture included projects of various sizes and scopes, none however quite as unique as the construction of the Titan missile complexes at Vandenberg Air Force Base in Venture County, California. Together, both companies built missile silos, tunnels, control facilities, fueling stations and other support structures. Various innovative construction techniques were required, particularly with the construction of the missile silos. This part of the project required a completely new approach and through the development of new technology, the
6
joint venture became the first contractor to slipform-cast the concrete silos. This was no easy task, as the silos were designed to hold and launch intercontinental ballistic missiles (ICBMs), and needed to be constructed to exact tolerances. Matich has also performed numerous other highly classified jobs for the U.S. Government over the years, many for military air bases. For obvious reasons, they are prohibited from discussing any restrictive details. In 1954, the company name was again altered to reflect its change in business status. The new name would now be Matich Corporation, which would remain the same to present day. The 1950’s were exciting and pivotal years for this family

owned company. When they weren’t out working hard to advance the company’s interests, they were working to improve their community. This was accomplished in many ways including Uncle Nikolas serving as mayor for the city of Lake Elsinore and Martin Matich serving as a city councilman in Colton in 1956 and later as mayor. Martin Matich identified the 1950’s as the turning point for Matich Corporation, due in part to the U.S. government’s tremendous commitment to the Interstate system. This commitment brought extensive highway construction work to Matich Corp., an area in which they had already logged 30 years of experience. Military and airfield construction also experienced tremendous expansion during this period and between these
two sectors the company grew and prospered at an astounding rate. In subsequent years, Matich expanded its operations into other states by teaming up with other joint venture partners like Robert L. Helms Construction Co. out of Reno, Nevada. Together, Matich and Helms constructed numerous highway jobs throughout Nevada, including many on Interstate 395 and Interstate 80. They also constructed much of the early work at the Reno Cannon International Airport. In addition, Matich teamed up with E.L. Yeager in California to construct several airfield, flood control and highway projects for the U.S. Air Force, the Army Corps of Engineers and CalTrans. They also created a joint venture with Rogers

Construction Co. out of Portland, Oregon to construct highways on I-5 and I-84. Matich Corporation’s relationships even stretched across the ocean, as they worked on several projects with Hawaiian Island contractor, Highway Construction Co., Ltd. Together, this team constructed jobs on Oahu and the big Island, as well as placing taxiways and hardstands at Honolulu International Airport in 1992. Over the years, Matich has worked with several respected joint venture partners. In 1972 Matich contracted with Maxwell Construction to construct the then
longest single project let by the California Division of Highways. This included a 37.5 mile stretch of I-5 and involved the placement of more than 250,000 cubic yards of concrete. In addition, Matich/Maxwell contracted to work on the I-210 Freeway in Pasadena, a $32 million project that was again at that time the costliest job ever let by the Division of Highways. Joint ventures, however were not the only business model increasing the competitiveness and profitability for Matich at this time. They also stayed busy with very high profile projects on their

own including the construction of the Ontario Motor Speedway. This racing surface went on to host many major races over the years and became a benchmark for smoothness to many other racing facilities around the country. Perhaps one of the most enjoyable projects for Matich Corporation was constructing the facilities for the US Festival in San Bernardino, California. Steve Wozniak, co-founder of Apple Computer, approached Matich back in 1982 and requested that they serve as the construction manager for this massive project. Matich agreed and went on to

have a hand in the design, construction and management of this memorable facility. Known today as the Blockbuster Pavilion, this natural grass facility was carved out of a mountain and included substantial irrigation and drainage to accommodate the man-made lakes and over 2,000 acres of parking. This unique and naturally beautiful facility played host to the music festival in 1982 and 1983, drawing more than 250,000 people each year. It is not only the high profile projects that has brought Matich Corporation prestige and respect

over the years, but possibly and more importantly it is what they do best and that is paving. In fact, Matich has set records in this area for two and three mile continuous paving within a 24-hour period. The first of these records involved placing 15,000 cubic yards of concrete in 20 hours on Interstate 8 between El Centro, California and Yuma, Arizona. This record was established in 1969, when Matich placed up to two miles of concrete per day on I-8 in Imperial County. Two years later, Matich
broke its own record by placing up to three miles per day, again on I-8 in Imperial County. The speed in which they traveled could of course not have been accomplished without the development of the slipform paver. Jack Matich worked very closely at the time with Bill Swisher, Founder of CMI Corporation in the advancement and refinement of this technology. After CMI demonstrated the paver at the 1967 AGC national convention in San Diego, Matich ran a prototype for an entire year before production.

.....Equipment & Technology
It goes without saying that equipment and technology has played a key role in the success and survival of Matich Corporation. However it is not just the equipment that has made a difference, but more importantly the people that stand behind the equipment they sell. Matich has been extremely fortunate to have built strong and loyal relationships with companies like Johnson Machinery, Inland Empire’s full line Caterpillar dealer. Matich Corporation has relied on Johnson Machinery and Caterpillar exclusively for their heavy equipment needs from the very beginning. As a matter of fact, Matich bought Caterpillar’s first RD-8 tractor from Johnson Machinery back in 1941. Johnson Machinery and Matich Corp. have been doing business together for over 65 years and three generations of families have worked together over that time period. Matich Corp. has built many other solid and rewarding relationships over the years with other manufacturers and distributors. From asphalt plants to pavers to semi’s and service trucks, they have relied on their loyal list of suppliers to keep them up and running. Back in the 1950’s, Matich had the largest trucking fleet in the state of
California. These numbers dissipated over time, but with the growth of Matich’s asphalt producing operation, the numbers have slowly grown back up to 50 or 60 units. This number is sure to grow in order to comply with the new emission requirements slated to take effect in 2010. Matich Corp. has also made a substantial investment in stationary and portable asphalt batch plants over the years. Today they operate five individual plants located in Redlands, Banning, Rialto, Lucerne and their newest facility in Cabazon. It is in Cabazon that Matich is constructing their new state-of-the-art Astec hot plant. Located on the western edge of the Coachella Valley, Matich will pull their aggregate supply from their own pit facility located just five miles west in Banning.

.....Matich Corporation Today
For 90 years, Matich Corporation has been owned, managed and operated excusively by members of the Matich family. The Matich Corporation has been and will continue to be an industry leader in contracting, asphalt sales, construction management and design/build services. The Matich family has built some of the finest highways, airports, public works and military installation projects in the Western United States. For many years the company was led by Martin, who served as the Chairman. His brother, Jack also assisted in managing the business until his passing in 1983. Jack’s daughter Williamina and son John II were instrumental in the growth and success of Matich Corporation over these years. Today, Stephen Matich serves as the company president, Robert Matich oversees construction, and Patrick Matich runs the asphalt sales division.
14
Randy Valdez is the company controller and Stephen Matich is quick to point out, “Every successful company has a good controller and Randy has been with us since 1993. Officially he is the company’s CFO and Treasurer and he is on our board of directors, but what he really does and has done for many years is take care of all of the financial matters so that we can concentrate on construction issues. We are a better company because of his efforts.” Under the leadership of the three Matich Brothers, the company’s focus has turned to the reconstruction of California’s infrastructure. Stephen comments, “We currently have a full complement of projects going on right now in Indio, San Bernardino, Riverside County and throughout the high desert including Victorville and Hesperia. One of our larger projects is on the

stretch of Interstate 10 and 15 from Indio to Victorville. We like to confine our efforts to jobs that we can supply competitively with our own asphalt plants, primarily for quality control reasons.” For the majority of their history, Matich has been more proactive in contracting and less in material sales. Today the focus has changed. Bob Matich explains, “In the past our asphalt plants have been more of a support facility for our contracting services. Today our asphalt production division is our bread and butter and the single largest segment of our company. We now produce more than 1.5 million tons of asphalt each year through our four plants located in Redlands, Rialto, Banning and Lucerne, California. Currently, we are erecting our fifth plant located in Cabazon. We are very excited about our newest and highly advanced Astec plant and look forward to continuing to grow our business through the very best in quality and support.” Although Matich has grown exponentially in the asphalt production business over the years, they continue to maintain an extremely competitive contracting division. The company achieved an all
16
time volume and sales high back in the 1980’s when they were performing around $40 to $50 million a year. They maintain close to that same volume today, although in today’s dollars that equates to much less work. They continue to focus on their public works projects and maintain excellent relationships with all of their public agent clients. Although the majority of their work is in the public works sector, Matich continues to take on private work whenever possible. The best example of this would have to be the construction of the Stater Bros. distribution facility in San Bernardino, California. This job will most likely stand for some time as Matich Corporation’s largest single job in their 90-year history. Matich managed all of the site construction from the ground up and even self-performed a good portion of the work. The four year project

Matich Corporation also included the demolition of the Air Force buildings, managed to relocate their headquarters back in Hazmat remediation, all site and civil November of 2006. Their new corporate facility is improvements, paving, grading, building appropriately located at the old Norton Air Force construction, everything from the ground up. The

facility, considering how many years Matich spent working there. Today, Matich employs a workforce of approximately 200 individuals, including 170 union personnel and 30 office staff. Matich Corporation has always emphasized three areas that they insist that their employees live by and in this order: safety, quality and job performance. Matich Corporation is proud to stand behind each and every individual they employ and believe that by investing in their workforce on an individual basis, they are indeed investing in the future of their company. Matich trusts in this ideal of investing in others so much that they have established “The Matich Foundation” to support worthy causes in their region. The foundation was founded around five years ago by Martin Matich and his sons in order to fulfill the Matich foundation father’s vision of

giving back to the community. This principle was instilled long ago by Grandpa John Matich who through his affiliation with the Catholic Church supported efforts to help support those that were eager to better their lives and in return pass on their good fortune to others. The foundation’s focus has been to put in place Catholic education vehicles where a child can go from kindergarten all the way to the University of Notre Dame with their assistance. In addition to a long list of charities, the Matich family has also belonged and contributed to many organizations and associations over the years. For instance, Jack Matich served as president of the AGC of California in 1975, as well as national president of the Asphalt Pavement Association in 1972. Martin Matich was also a past president of the AGC of Southern California in 1962 and together over the years, Martin and Jack chaired dozens of association committees and have assisted
greatly on both the federal and state government levels. Issues such as safety laws, emergency defense, contract labor laws and contract specifications are only a few that the company has helped mold in the interest of the community and the industry over the years. Martin Matich was also a member of the Inland Empire Economic Council

Mike Stull, founding organizer of the event and director of Cal State San Bernardino’s Inland Empire Center for Entrepreneurship had this to say, “The Matich family deserves this recognition for their family’s solidarity, business success and community involvement. This family provides a true example of a thriving business that has been successful across multiple generations.” Recently, the Matich family suffered a tremendous loss with the passing of, Martin Matich. Steve Matich comments, “Our father is and will always be our mentor, idol, leader, teacher and best friend. He was a businessman in construction, but a giant in the business world because he emphasized quality, integrity and above all moral character in everything he did. He truly built roads not only in the physical sense, but also between people and entire communities by the way he lived his life. Dad was the finest man we have ever known and we were all blessed to belong to him.” In its 3rd generation of ownership, Matich Corporation has been a successful familymanaged firm for nearly 100 years. Their reputation for quality and performance precedes them everywhere they go and their work over the years remains a testament to their skill, integrity and responsibility. M
