N
o matter where you have traveled in Southern California, you have more than likely seen that black and yellow Savala Equipment Rentals logo on a shiny piece of heavy machinery. It may have been during one of your daily drives on a congested California freeway, on city streets or even at the Dodger, Angel, or new Rams stadiums. They are certainly one of our construction mainstays and have been providing Southern California contractors with heavy machinery and top-notch operators since 1978. Savala Equipment Rentals' genesis really began in 1947 when George Savala started a white paving construction company. In 1961, his son, Leonard Savala, took over the reins of the

company and over time the company's core scope of work switched to underground construction. In the 70's Leonard Savala Jr. joined the construction company working in the field and transitioned into estimating. The company eventually started a small equipment rental company, renting primarily to itself. The rental division grew over the years, so Leonard decided to take the rental concept to the next level by establishing Savala Equipment Company, Inc. dba Savala Equipment Rentals in 1978. They started out renting a few machines to select contractors, offering their equipment with an operator or bare. At the time, this was still a fairly novel concept as there were not many union operated equipment

companies. Contractors would have to rely on their own operators or contact the union hall to get an operator to run their machine. Savala Equipment Rentals took their business to yet a higher level in the late 80's and early 90's by adding many more operators and machines in the process. They offered their customers a full package deal with late model equipment and some of the industry's best operators. Leonard's son, Sean and daughter, Erin joined the company in the mid to late 80's. The company was now entering its third generation, guided by the same honest hard work and core family values that it was originally founded upon. As a young
teenager, Sean spent summers sweeping the yard, riding with the fuel truck and lowbed drivers, delivering parts and obtaining vast knowledge of equipment from themechanics. After attending Chapman University with an emphasis in business management, Sean joined full time in 1986 working in sales and field operations. Sean became President in 1993. "Everyone at the company works as a team. We all cover for one another and will do what it takes for each of us to be successful and satisfy customers." Erin joined the family business after graduating from Chapman University with a BA in business

and an emphasis in marketing. Her first duties were dispatching equipment, customer service and attending meetings supporting the local construction associations. In 2000, Erin became CEO and started the process of obtaining certification for a Woman Owned/ Minority Owned Business Enterprise. As one of the first equipment companies in California to become WBE certified, the decision was a necessary business move and helped to open doors with Caltrans, Metro, Supplier Clearinghouse and other agencies. It marked a distinct moment of growth for the company, allowing them to take on jobs such as the
Century Freeway and Metro Projects. Erin realizes that it is not a one-way street and the clients need Savala as much as Savala needs them. She stated, "Savala strives to keep a good environment for our employees' as well as our clients. Everyone treats each other with respect and we work as a team to make every rental a success. The business climate is ever changing and we make every effort to stay connected to our clients. Savala is accessible 24 hours a day. If a client has an emergency after hours, we will do our best to try to accommodate their rental request."

MANAGEMENT Having the right people in the right positions is essential, but having those same people buy into a professional familyoriented culture is another thing altogether. They found that in Aaron Dyer who is no stranger to the business of construction. He grew up in a construction family with a father that was a general contractor focusing on everything from commercial development to building custom homes. After graduating from Fort Lewis College in 1996 with a BA in Business Administration, Aaron went to work as a sales representative for a reinforced concrete pipe supply company. Savala Construction
Company was one of Aaron’s customers, and that is how he was first introduced to the Savala family. Sean was so impressed with Aaron’s knowledge and professionalism that he offered him a job as a sales representative. That was 1999, and after proving himself time and time again, Aaron was eventually promoted to Vice President. His responsibilities include, vehicle acquisitions, fleet maintenance and managing the shop. organized and received from all of the staff" says Aaron. “It is the combined professional efforts of every employee that allows us to be far greater than any individual effort.” Dyer points out that it begins with the sales department that works hard to develop relationships and listen carefully to their customer’s individual needs. From there it goes over to the dispatchers who find the right operators for the right equipment, to the lowbed drivers and outside vendors that deliver equipment safely and on time. Then there are the mechanics that keep the equipment running and the accounting department that gets the certified payroll done and chases down the invoices to keep it all funded and operating like a well-oiled machine. “I have witnessed and am proud to have been a part of the tremendous growth this company has accomplished over the past

40 years,” says Dyer. “The average longevity of Savala’s 50-plus employees is 11 years with the longest stretch being 32-years. We are a tight-knit group of people, and everyone is an integral part of the team, part of the family. That is why I think we have such loyalty and longevity here at Savala.” Scott Damon started out in sales for Savala Equipment Rentals back in September 1996. After eight years, Damon was promoted to Vice President of Sales. He did not come from far away when he first joined Savala, as he spent the previous four years working for another equipment company located directly across the street from the Irvine facility. Prior to the equipment business, Damon was fortunate to have learned the art

of selling and management from some of the finest in the industry, namely IBM and TGI Fridays, where he served in management for several years. Scott currently oversees the sales and dispatch departments. He also is an affiliate representative for the SCCA. “Honest, open communication is vital to most any company’s success. You can’t possibly fulfill every customer’s needs, all the time, but you can earn their trust by steering them in the right direction,” says Damon. “Our word is our bond, and when we promise something, we will do everything in our power to deliver. It helps that we have some of the best operators and most up-to-date equipment in the business, but it is our consistent, honest customer
service that sets us apart. You only get one chance to earn a customer’s trust, and we take that seriously.” EXCEPTIONAL STAFF There are many other individuals and personalities that make up the overall face of Savala Equipment Rentals. Some are family and others are employees that have served for many years and continue to contribute to the overall success of the firm. “It would be great to have the time and space to mention every employee by name, but I will take the time to thank a few other key employees,” says Erin Savala Oskorus. “Leonard Savala, Jr. (also known as J.R.) is our equipment superintendent and safety officer. He does an amazing job researching incidents and keeping it all safe

Brigham Florentin has been with us for a couple of years now and is doing a great job as part of the sales team,” says Erin. “We also have a new fourth generation working here that will help assure that the family’s legacy continues to move forward. Sean’s sons and daughter, Ryan, Brett, and Alyssa Savala, are all doing an outstanding job learning every facet of our business. Lastly, we must thank our team of operators who keep the clients requesting them on a daily basis." As Sean says, "it takes a team, and we have a great group of dedicated employees working here at Savala Equipment Rentals.”

were solid and has led to Savala Equipment Rentals working on a long list of high-profile projects over the past 40 years, not the least of which was the 1994 Northridge Earthquake emergency repair work. “As unfortunate and devastating as it was, the Northridge Earthquake gave us some tremendous traction in the 90s and helped launch and sustain tremendous growth,”says Sean. “Erin and I were both so young and just so dedicated to growing our business. Like the operators in the seats, it felt like we were working 24/7, but the excitement and expectations were high, and everything just started to take off.” Other projects that were instrumental to Savala’s growth and success included the 105 Century Freeway, 110 Freeway Expansion, 241/261 Toll Roads, Renovation of Los Angeles Memorial Coliseum, The Great Park in Irvine, Disneyland and California Adventure, Anaheim Regional Transportation Intermodal
Center (ARTIC), the 91 Freeway Expansion, LAX, the Ports of LA and Long Beach, Anaheim Convention Center, Universal Studios, Kaiser Hospitals, UCI/ UCLA/USC and Cal State Fullerton school renovations, the Foothill Drive Extension in Corona, Lone Pine Dust Mitigation Project, Interstate 40 Bridge Replacement Project in Essex, Metro Projects, Rail Projects, Silver Lake Reservoir Replenishment Project and an exhaustive list of emergency projects for counties, cities and municipalities. "We consider ourselves to be the service leader in operated and bare heavy equipment rentals here in Southern California,” says Erin. “Having said that, we are also extremely competitive with pricing, but the deal has to work for everyone involved. We work hard to always make our rentals a win/ win for our customer and us, with the most important thing being the relationship itself.” Erin continues to point out that all equipment rental companies are not created equal. “When a client asks for an additional machine or an extra attachment in the same day, we can make this happen. If a machine has a mechanical issue, we will fix it out in the field. In rare situations, when we can't repair the equipment, we will have another machine on the job the following morning. We subscribe to the notion that honesty will always be what our client gets

from us. If an operator overslept, a lowbed got a flat tire, or a machine simply did not start, that is what we tell our customer. Honesty truly is the best policy.” continues Erin. “The computer has made much of this process so impersonal, with companies getting dozens of bids on a spreadsheet in within a few hours. The difference here at Savala is that we still go out into the field to meet with our clients before a job starts and see it through its completion. In addition, we go with Cat and Volvo to round out our fleet with certain machines that our contractors ask for on a daily basis,” says Sean. “We have also invested several GPS programs which allow us to monitor and manage
our entire truck and machinery fleet seamlessly.
