WHICH COURSE IS FOR YOU?

Calderdale College has a set of standard entry requirements; but never be deterred by the lack of formal qualifications or by not meeting the entry requirements. Apply for the course you want to study and we will help you get there. There are a lot of courses available - work focused, practical or academic, so it is important to think about the future and whether you want to proceed to university, move onto another course or get a job. Full course details and updates can be found on our website: www.calderdale.ac.uk

BTEC

BTECs are vocational and occupationally relevant courses which help you gain knowledge and vocationally specific skills. They are well recognised by employers and universities. Achieving a BTEC National Qualification over 2 years is the equivalent of 3 A-Levels Grade A-E. Achieving a BTEC First is the equivalent of 5 GCSEs Grade A*-C. Achieving a BTEC Introductory Diploma is the equivalent of 5 GCSEs Grades D-G. All courses are primarily taught through assignment work and case studies and are tested through assignments and timelimited assessments. BTEC Awards and Certificates are accreditations for completing some units but not the full Diploma.

NVQ

NVQs are job-specific, competence based qualifications. NVQs reflect the skills and knowledge needed to do a job effectively. They are available to anyone, at any age or stage of their career development. The central feature of NVQs is the National Occupational Standards (NOS) on which they are based. NOS are statements of performance standards that describe what competent people in a particular occupation are expected to be able to do. They cover all the main aspects of an occupation, including current best practice, the ability to adapt to future requirements, and the knowledge and

Calderdale College

understanding that underpins competent performance. Achieving a Level 3 NVQ is the equivalent of 3 A-Levels A-C.

APPRENTICESHIPS

Young people aged between 16 and 24 can earn while they learn on an Apprenticeship; there is a wide range of training opportunities to suit your ability and job preferences. By working to a structured training plan and gaining work experience you will achieve an Apprenticeship framework that reflects your ability. Functional Skills are a requirement for an Apprenticeship framework and an expectation within other courses. If you have not achieved GCSE Grades C or above in English, Maths or ICT then you will work on these skills, with help from your vocational tutor, so that you achieve at least a Level 2 in all areas. This is the level required to be effective in work and to access higher level courses.

TRAINEESHIPS

A Traineeship is a programme of study and work experience that supports young people to develop the skills for an Apprenticeship and/or employment. They are most suited to young people who are not employed, have little work experience and who are focussed on getting a job. Traineeships include: work preparation training (including CV writing), interview techniques and team working, English and Maths and a high quality work placement.

CalderdaleCol

CHOOSING THE RIGHT COURSE

VRQ

VRQs are practical courses that are usually assessed by tests and course work. They are available in work related subjects such as hairdressing, and are more job specific than other qualifications. Whilst studying a VRQ you will gain knowledge, understanding and skills for a broad area of work or range of jobs.

SPECIAL ENTRY REQUIREMENTS

Some courses require special entry requirements, such as: A Criminal Records Bureau Enhanced Disclosure (CRB), references, the completion of a dexterity test, attainment in a pre-course diagnostic assessment, including testing for you to be in training in a job or be successful at an audition or interview. The Admissions Team can help you identify whether you meet the entry requirements and the College can advise prior to an Admissions Event, what evidence may be required. Should you be interviewed at an Admissions Event and not be successful in receiving an offer for the course you applied for, you will be directed onto an alternative level that will enable you to progress.

been exceptional; she really has gone above and beyond in supporting us with the search for universities and helping us achieve the grades that we want. I really do not believe there are many tutors or colleges out there that would have given me this much support for which I will be eternally grateful.

Name, age and home town: Billie-Jo Cochrane, 19, from Halifax Course: Former Level 3 Travel & Tourism student What’s next: Studying Marketing at Sheffield Hallam University What do you like about the College? My favourite thing about Calderdale College has to be the support I have received, not only from my tutors but from the Marketing Department who have very kindly taken me on as an intern. I do feel as though I may not have received the same support if I had chosen to attend another college. What do you think of your tutors? My tutors have been fantastic; they have all been extremely knowledgeable and supportive. My main tutor Gemma Thelwell has

Calderdale College

What do/did you think of your course? I have really enjoyed the course, there has been a great mixture of practical and written elements where I was given the opportunity to really develop all my skills, however, I have now decided to take a different path rather than carry on with travel and tourism. I feel that a lot of what I have done will really help me when I venture out in to the workplace as I have had many an opportunity to enhance my written, communication and confidence skills. I also feel that travel and tourism is such a great subject to learn as so many of the skills are transferable and the amount of different routes you can take with it are unbelievable. What does your qualification mean to you? I have now achieved D*D*D* and this qualification means everything to me. It really is my proudest achievement in life so far. I was never very good at school and I didn’t really attend and when I did I think the teachers may of wished that I hadn’t, so by the end of my time at school my GCSE

qualifications weren’t very good. This qualification has opened so many doors for me that I don’t think would have been open without it. How will/has your course and your qualification help/helped you on to the next step in your career? It has made it possible for me to go to university. Would you recommend Calderdale College to students thinking of doing your course and why? Yes I would definitely recommend the College and my course, mainly because my own experience has been so successful.

Billie-Jo’s mum has the last word.... Samantha Cochrane, mother of Billie-Jo said: “The College seems to have really helped my daughter and has really brought her out of herself. It has been really good for Billie-Jo and helped her to work towards going to university. I would definitely recommend the College; everything is really well organised and the staff have been great - they have gone above and beyond for my daughter.”

HOLLYWOOD MAKE-UP ARTIST THOMAS E. SURPRENANT VISITS CALDERDALE COLLEGE

Thomas imparted his knowledge of the profession, tips for getting into and what it’s like to be a part of industry to College students and invited them to ask questions throughout the demonstration. When asked about the event and how these types of events can help aspiring students, Thomas told us: “I think it’s really a wonderful thing. I don’t see a lot of this happening back in the US and I think it’s brilliant. I think it is rewarding for the person speaking and I think it’s rewarding for the people watching. “I think you can also get a lot out of it and hopefully take from the positive and learn from that person’s mistakes and shortcomings.”

On Wednesday 2nd April, Calderdale College Rugby League team won the Student Rugby League National Colleges Final by defeating Lancashire finalists Hopwood Hall from Rochdale 50 – 6. The College currently have 7 students as part of the Halifax RLFC Under 20s squad and in 2013, 3 were part of the England Colleges squad. This season the team remains undefeated, winning the Yorkshire cup against New College Pontefract (34-10) for the second year in a row and clinching the Yorkshire Premier League for the first time with a win over Wakefield (46 -0). -------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

CREATIVE ARTS STUDENT DESIGNS HER WAY TO SUCCESS

Hair, Media Make-up Lecturer, Pamela Clare who organised the event said: “It has been absolutely brilliant; what I really liked about it was that lots of other college’s and lots of other make-up artists have been so inspired. Today was about giving back to young make-up artists and inspiring them to hopefully achieve the standards and heights that Thomas has reached.”

TDF recently approached Calderdale College’s Creative Arts Department to create and design a T-shirt for the Spring/Summer 2014 collection to be sold alongside major brands across their 3 stores. The winning student MaisyElla Varey produced a creative design using multi-media techniques based around a self-portrait and was lucky enough to fend off over a hundred other students and see her design sell in store.

ON TRACK TO BE A PROFESSIONAL ACTRESS Level 3 Performing Arts student, Shelby Love, 17, from Elland who appeared in the BBC Drama – Happy Valley said: “I think it is a really good course, we get to do lots of different things like devising, Greek theatre, freeze frames – we don’t just do one thing, we get to study a variety of areas of performance and techniques. We have performed in lots of shows and theatre productions and I have created my own play. It was fun putting the things we have learnt at College into my own piece. My tutors are really nice and really supportive. I come home and think – I really enjoyed my day and start planning what I am doing tomorrow. It is quite exciting, if you love acting, then Performing Arts is such a good course. It is really interesting to meet different people who have different personalities and age groups. I have made so many new friends who think the same way and have the same interests.” Calderdale College Course Guide 2015-16

INFORMATION FOR PARENTS ZYZYZYZYZYZYZYZYZYZYZYZYZYZYZYZYZYZYZYZYZYZYZYZYZYZY

RAISING THE PARTICIPATION AGE & WHAT IT MEANS FOR YOU

The Government has increased the age to which all young people in England must continue in education or training until they turn 17 from 2013 and until their 18th birthday from 2015.

CHOOSE A ROUTE THAT SUITS CAREER ASPIRATIONS

Raising the participation age (RPA) does not necessarily mean staying in school. Young people have a range of options to choose from the age of 16: • Full-time education in a school, college or with a training provider (A-Levels, NVQs, BTECS & NVQs) • Part-time education or training if they are employed, self-employed or volunteering full-time (20 hours or more a week) • Work-based learning such as an Apprenticeship BTEC National Diplomas are equivalent to 3 A-Levels, enabling students to continue to university or employment.

PASTORAL CARE

Calderdale College welcomes parents, carers and guardians to become involved with the College and the young person’s learning to maximise

134

Calderdale College Course Guide 2015-16

the success of the learning experience. We fully recognise the value and necessity of working together where the student is still dependant on family support, and encourage you to make contact if any issues arise. Parents, carers and guardians will receive a written progress review twice a year, and will be invited to attend parent/ carer events during the first and second term.

OFSTED

After visiting Calderdale College in 2014, key findings by Ofsted were: • Outcomes on the Apprenticeship programme are outstanding • Students and Apprentices make good progress in improving their personal, social and employability skills • Teaching in practical sessions enables students to acquire skills they need for work • Teachers and assessors promote equality and diversity very effectively • The Principal and senior managers have high expectations of students and Apprentices, and promote high standards of quality and performance • The College is highly responsive to the needs of employers and key stakeholders

A PARENT’S VIEW

Anne Chambers, mother of former Level 3 Public Services student Mark Chambers from Mirfield, who also studied a Foundation Degree in Health and Social Care said: “The College has been very good because he hated doing A-Levels at school and he’s now at university – he really has just come on leaps and bounds. I think it’s great from his point of view; he’s very sociable and the enrichment was really good as he also took part in other activities such as American Football. I would definitely recommend the College for someone struggling with their A-Levels because I think you get more of a focused subject and it’s still a Level 3 qualification.” “As for myself, I would recommend it as I do not think I would of completed my degree if I hadn’t have done it at Calderdale College. The College was fantastic; I wouldn’t have wanted to do it anywhere else being a mature student. It just gives you that comfort and cushion and the whole placement of the College is great - it’s easy to park, easy to get to and I cannot praise the College enough.”
