WHAT THE STUDENTS SAY...
TUTORIALS • Student reps confirm that the tutorial system works well, they speak informally with the tutor, if you have any problems they are there. If there are any problems then they can book an appointment. • This is only a small group of students so they are able to discuss any issues with the tutor as they arise. The students report that this arrangement works really well, that they can ask for help whenever they need it.
ACADEMIC SKILLS SUPPORT • Timetabled weekly study support sessions have been very useful especially for the first years; it was like having an assignment workshop, a space to work with someone there to help. • Students reported that they were very happy with the support received which has helped them to achieve. • It helps students to organise the structure of their work and provide encouragement. • Students like that they can walk in and ask for advice or help from the Academic Skills team in the new HE study room. • Students have found sessions with the Academic Skills team useful, such as CV writing and referencing.
WHAT THE STUDENTS SAY...
LIBRARY & RESOURCES • The students confirmed that the LRC staff have been extremely helpful. • The provision of E-books is very good, students can learn how to access E-books from LRC staff or from the ASK team. • Moodle is brilliant; every lesson has supporting documents on Moodle, even when feeling ‘stumped’ it is really helpful. Students find Moodle essential to their independent work.
ASSESSMENT • Tutors are constantly available to give formative feedback, going through the assessment process with individual students and informing them of ‘areas for improvement’, also written feedback is very helpful to students. • Students value the flexibility of when tutors give feedback; they receive lots of informal feedback constantly. • 1st year Student Rep reported that after returning to studying after a long break it was really helpful to have a clear assessment schedule and to obtain formative feedback on work which allowed students to improve their work. • The students are enjoying the structure of the course and how well it is flowing. Assessments are laid out clearly in advance to enable students to meet deadlines, a big improvement on last year.

Celebrating Success Lindsey Jane Emerton joined
the College as a mature student to complete a Foundation Degree in Early Years. In addition to completing the course she was working full-time in a school with children with special educational needs, as well as being a full-time mother taking care of her family. Initially not overly confident, she progressed well and in doing so her confidence began to grow. It was as though every achievement and good result gave her confidence to go on and achieve more.
69
Lindsey has plans to go on to complete a BA Honours in Early Years, and is a shining example to all prospective mature students, showing that you don’t have to come straight from education to achieve outstanding results. Through dedication and hard work, Lindsey has gone over and above everyone’s expectations and should be very proud of all her achievements.
Not only was she able to complete her course, she achieved a weighted average of 96 percent over the three years. She is a hugely dedicated and motivated individual and staff have commented that it was as though she wanted to prove to herself that she could do it, and that it was worthwhile.

Qualifications Access Courses
The Access to HE Diploma Course is usually one year course designed for adults aged 19 and over who do not have the formal qualifications to access Higher Education directly. An Access Course can prepare students who have not been in education for some time to return to study in a supportive environment. Access to Higher Education courses can be studied on a full or parttime basis. They can often take into account family and work commitments with a flexible timetable. Students on an Access to Higher Education Course will be supported in making an application to a Higher Education programme. This includes assistance with searching for the right course at college or university, accessing funding/ grants from LEA or appropriate bodies and completing the application form.

78 Foundation Degrees
Foundation Degrees are still considered relatively new qualifications designed to meet workplace skills needs of the 21st Century. Foundation Degrees forge new links between universities, colleges and employers fusing the academic and vocational routes to higher level qualifications and combining academic study with workplace learning. Foundation Degrees are attractive to both full and part- time students. For students already in employment, assessment is often built around the individual workplace setting making it beneficial to both employee and employer. Foundation Degrees have been instrumental in bringing more people into Higher Education from a wider mix of backgrounds. A Foundation Degree is broadly equivalent to the first two years of a Bachelors Degree (or a Diploma in Higher Education) and is a Level
5 qualification. It is possible to ‘Top Up’ your Foundation Degree to a full Honours Degree through a period of further study. Additionally you can often progress from a Foundation Degree to further professional qualifications. Foundation Degrees are delivered at Calderdale College in collaboration with our partner universities.
Bachelors Degrees
A Bachelors Degree (sometimes known as an ‘Ordinary’ or ‘First’ Degree) can lead to a qualification such as a Bachelor of Arts (BA) or Bachelor of Science (BSc)Depending on the subject you choose, it normally takes three or four years to complete full-time. This is known as a Level 6 qualification.
Honours Degrees
‘Honours’ Level covers degrees with titles such as Bachelor of Arts, BA (Hons), Bachelor of Science, BSc (Hons), or Bachelor of Engineering,

also count towards membership of professional bodies and other employer organisations. HNCs and HNDs are available in a wide range of subjects.
You may be able to ‘Top-up’ an HNC, HND or Foundation Degree to an Honours Degree through a period of additional study. The difference between an Ordinary and Honours Degree is solely credit points. An Honours Degree studied in the UK is usually 360 credit points, whereas an Ordinary Degree requires completion of 300 credit points.
Higher National qualifications don’t just qualify you for work, many HNCs and HNDs can allow direct entry into a degree programme. A HNC is a Level 4 qualification and a HND a Level 5 qualification.
Higher National Certificates (HNCs) & Higher National Diplomas (HNDs)
HNCs and HNDs are vocationallyfocused course provided by colleges and some universities. While Bachelors Degrees tend to focus on gaining knowledge, HNCs and HNDs are designed to provide both the practical skills you need to do a job and the theoretical knowledge your employer will expect you to have. They are highly valued by employers both in the UK and overseas, and can

Higher Degrees
Higher (also called Postgraduate) Degrees, Diplomas and Certificates usually require that you already have a Bachelors Degree. They lead to Level 7 qualifications such as Master of Arts (MA) or Master of Science (MSc).
NVQs
NVQs are work-related, competence based qualifications and reflect the skills and knowledge needed to do a job effectively. The central feature of NVQs is the National Occupational Standards (NOS) on which they are based. NOS are statements of performance
standards which describe what competent people in a particular occupation are expected to be able to do. They cover all the main aspects of an occupation, including current best practice, the ability to adapt to future requirements and the knowledge and understanding which underpins competent performance. NVQs are available to anyone at any age or stage of their career – and there are no entry qualifications. NVQs are flexible and accessible – within reasonable limits, you can decide the pace, place and way in which you learn. Most people working towards an NVQ are in work but they are available to others through a number of initiatives.
