SOUTHBANK BLVD REDEVELOPMENT. DESIGN STATEMENT
With the wicked problem of climate change coupled to our continual expansion of the built environment, it is vital to establish spaces that reconnect the city with nature. The Imperial Blue Butterfly is characterised by an interdependent relationship that is paramount to its incubation, development and survival as a native fauna species. It is such that Southbank Boulevard will be transformed into a sculpted corridor of native grass and woodlands that undulate and flutter towards the Yarra River. A synergistic relationship will be reignited, using dense gardens, pedestrian thoroughfares and spaces for chance encounters to revitalise and invigorate those of Southbank, and Melbourne.

SOUTHBANK BLVD REDEVELOPMENT. PLANTING SCHEDULE
SPACING (mm) QTY
STOCK SIZE (mm)
acacia trees and bushes to act as wind breakers
dense planting on outskirts creates a buffer and micro-climate oasis concrete benches allowing users to sit within the undulating form
SOUTHBANK BLVD REDEVELOPMENT. SKETCH SECTION
undulating pervious concrete walkways and multiuse civic spaces
unshaded urban infrastructure for winter solar exposure
areas of summer sun protection and creation of a micro-climate
garden beds with large substrate to accommodate sub surface fauna and nesting of ants
clustered plinths elevate flora to eye level
Scattered and elevated winter flowering flora (eg. Hardenbergia violacia) mark the regeneration of this cycle.
