In an exercise of complexity, this house is designed to utilise the little space it has, allowing inhabitants to grow, expand and evolve, activating and defining spaces throughout their lifetime. Internal spaces are fully designed to maximise space, and give users multiple levels of interaction and opportunities – whether that be enjoying family time in the open ground floor, or finding seclusion in an adaptable library.

UP

A ‘dog leg’ passage breaks the site into two and creates an entrance sequence that extends the threshold between public and private space, city life and family, business and calm. A layered entrance creates an oasis that separates occupants from the business of city life. A light screen furthers this, enveloping the house, layering the transition from heritage to new and adding ambiguity to perception. Rooftop gardens become private courtyards and inhabitants can take full advantage of their privacy in a site that might otherwise have been exposed.

LIVING NEIGHBORHOOD LANEWAY COMMONS This project saw the exploration of densifying the MacArthur street block as a model for the further densification of inner city suburbs. As defined during the group master plan, the Carlton grid has been scaled into a micro community, with public and private laneways being formed by a grid of mix occupancy dwellings that have been informed by the typology of the ‘tiny house’. Each residence becomes a machine for living, and challenges the perception of enclosed space versus private sprawling. Services, recreation and multi-use spaces are shared along the Elgin street block to provide community members the chance for interaction with each other and the surrounding environment. The Elgin street block is defined by an introduced laneway – a thoroughfare connecting Elgin street to MacArthur square. To enable this the laneway is interfaced with undulating cladding that invites and draws people through the thoroughfare and commercial space. The use of secondary laneways and ‘step in’ typology of retail spaces ensures there is a delineation between public and private space for the residences of this densified block - the exploration of private entrances in a public setting. Furthermore, activated roof tops manifest ‘streets in the sky’, becoming the primary space for private circulation and exploration.
