healthcare workers who have gotten the first dose of vaccine and 671,422 who are already fully vaccinated. For the senior citizens, there are a total of 1,379,946 who had their first dose and 245,244 who are fully vaccinated. On the other hand, peo-

ple with coronavirus have a total of 1,179,930 who have gotten the first dose and 286, 670 are fully vaccinated. The government is encouraging populations who are included of the priority group A1 to A3 to register and get fully vaccinated, to increase the chance of beating this virus faster. Vaccinated

populations are still required to follow the safety protocols and guidelines to prevent the public health from getting infected. The number of operational vaccine sites will also increase once the vaccine supplies arrive, for now it is based on the current vaccine supply.

TPC, Makati Business Club Donated 530 Tablets to Public Schools in Marikina City By: Jilliane Monique Timonel

By: Joaquin Oliva

The city government of Marikina has implemented the use of the quick response (QR) code because of the urgency of contact tracing amidst the pandemic. The DILG provided the StaySafe App that records (via QR scanner) the people who scan the QR code in the establishment. They now monitor the people that enter the establishment, and also the people they interacted with. This system is almost available in every establishment in the city, including malls, merchandise, or even clinics.

This will help conduct the contact tracing even easier. For those that don’t have their phones or don’t have a StaySafe account, they can write their personal info on a sheet of paper so that contact tracing is still being monitored. “The MIS (Management Information System) will handle the registration of city officials/employees through the IT officers designated in each department and will get underway immediately” as instructed by the city administrator.

On Tuesday, the Schools Division Office (SDO) of Marikina External Partnership team, headed by Mr. Reinan Ignacio, gathered and presented the tablets to Malanday Elementary School, Concepcion Integrated School Elementary level, and Fortune Elementary School, with the support of Mr. Gil Catuday, a SDO personnel, as well as Mr. Eros Bulaclac. The said schools are currently executing the BasaBilang project, that requires participants to have learning gadgets, which is a distinct collaboration between SDO Marikina and The

lighting the fact that even though we face many challenges, the students’ rights to inclusive, good quality education and safety from the health risks from Covid-19 shall be prioritized. According to DepEd Order No. 012, s. 2021, Quarter 4 of this school year should end on July 10, 2021. Meaning, schools and Learning Centers (CLCS) are given the choice to select the date for holding this program within the week of July 12-16, 2021. While private schools may follow the date of holding this program within their respective school calendars. To safely conduct this program, schools and CLCS must abide by the guidelines and safety protocols given by the DOH, Inter-Agency task force, and the Office of the President. There will also be no face-to-face ceremony allowed. Virtual programs can be conducted but will only take 2 hours of the parents’ and guardians’ time to consider the internet connectivity to be consumed. If the school chooses to broadcast the ceremony on appropriate social media platforms they must secure parents’ and guardians’ consent to do so. Should the public health situation cause delay in the programs, schools and CLCS may reschedule the PTC. With all these said, the Multi Year Implementing Guidelines on the Conduct of the K to 12 Basic Education program End Of School Year Rites enclosed in DO 002, s. 2020 remains in effect, excluding the grant of academic awards, which will be discussed in a different discussion regarding Awards and Recognition.

Wellness Campus of the Year Awards Recently Concluded, MSHS Bagged Bronze By: Sky Aquino

Recently, Marikina Science High School bagged bronze in the National Level in the recently concluded Wellness Campus of the Year Awards. Earlier this year, the school held a program that encourages students to stay fit, and become healthier and stronger. Students have to do various activities and answer modules while the program is still on-going. For the Grade 7 students, one of the activi-

ties given was the HEALTHfies, in which students have to take pictures of themselves doing various activities that relate to the healthy habits, and post it afterwards on their Facebook accounts where they caption their posts with reasons or encouragements as to why we need to do this specific activity. Another activity is the Wellness Vlog, in which the students have to post their own vlogs that talk about the importance of the healthy habit they

chose. Lastly, students from all grade levels were tasked to perform the ‘Wellness Is Life’ dance, as we compete with other schools. Aside from obtaining bronze, the school also received special awards such as Pinaka-best in Dancercise-National Level (Gold), Pinakabest in Module Integration-National Level (Bronze), and Pinakabest Wellness Guro of the Year-National Level to Arvin Lark Santiago (Top 3 finalist).

Bound: The Inevitable Chains of Poverty By: Irish Nicole Nasam

P

hilippines has a fairly high poverty rate with more than 16% of the population living below the poverty line. Because of this, many children are forced to sacrifice their colorful childhood in order to work and support their family’s necessities. Reymark Mariano, a 10-year-old Filipino citizen that is already working to provide his family’s needs. Despite of his small arms and feet, even though he is unable to walk straight and almost falling down, he is patiently plowing about twohectare farm with the help of his horse named “Rabanos” to earn money to feed his family. Have you ever wondered why he is doing this? What are his reasons? Reymark has been raised his grandparents Rudy and Nerissa. Reymark is the one who was tasked to plow the land because his grandparents could not do heavy work anymore be-

cause of their illnesses. “Wala na kaming chance yumaman sa mundo, ma’am, dahil ang amin lang po ‘yung makakain kami sa isang araw,” Reymark said. His mother left Reymark to his grandparents due to unexpected instances while his dad has been arrested due to alleged illegal possession of firearms. Reymark expressed his grief as he long for his father. The Department of Social Welfare and De-

velopment and the local government unit of Bagumbayan, Sultan Kudarat gave school supplies and groceries to the kid’s family. The Agriculture Department also gave them organic fertilizer, assorted fruit trees, vegetable seeds, and some livestock. Some people say that the youth should idolize him because even at a young age, he knows very well how unfair the world can be, he already knows the hardships that people might go through in this world. On the other hand, other people say that it is not good, it is child labor, parents should not let their children work at a very young age. Child labor refers to the exploitation of children through any form of work that

deprives children of their childhood, interferes with their ability to attend regular school, and is mentally, physically, socially and morally harmful. We can say that Reymark is definitely a victim of child labor due to poverty. Like Reymark, how many more children are forced to carry the world’s weight on their shoulders for their family? How many more dreams are needed to be sacrificed in order to be practical, as we all have families to support? Poverty is a survival phase and it must not be romanticized. There’s no good in poverty, only sufferings. Many Filipino children are already immersed in work. Their childhood are taken away because of the responsibilities placed on them by their families. To all children like Reymark out there, don’t lose hope, there will always be a better tomorrow ahead of you. Always remember that there’s always a rainbow after the rain. Soar high, young ones!

Struggling Against the Cage: The Wrath of the Pandemic

T

his pandemic caused by the Coronavirus Disease (COVID-19) greatly affected our lives around the world. During this pandemic, it is not surprising that we have a lot of struggles especially in coping up with the new normal. What are those struggles and how to cope up with them? Isolation and staying at home all the time is one of the major struggles that we’re experiencing right now. Even though staying at home can bring many opportunities for personal growth and family cohesion, disadvantages may outweigh these benefits. Anxiety, lack of peer contact and reduced opportunities for stress regulations are the main concerns. An increased risk for parental mental illness, domestic violence and child maltreatment are another main threat in this pandemic. It is really hard especially for children and adolescents with special needs or disadvantages such as disabilities, already existing mental health problems, migrant background and low socioeconomic status, this may be a very challenging time. COVID-19 is not only a global pandemic and public health crisis; it has also severely affected the global economy and financial markets. Significant reductions in income, a rise in unemployment, and disruptions in the transportation, service, and manufacturing industries are among the consequences of the disease mitigation that have been implemented in many countries. In addition to the substantial burden on healthcare systems,

By: Irish Nicole Nasam

COVID-19 has had major economic consequences for the affected countries. This pandemic has caused direct impacts on income due to premature deaths, workplace absenteeism, and reduction in productivity and has created a negative supply shock, with manufacturing productive activity slowing down due to global supply chain disruptions and closures of factories. These measures have the potential to threaten the mental health of children and adolescents significantly. There are a lot of ways to avoid and overcome these struggles. The first thing you should do to improve your mental health is to get enough sleep and

exercise regularly because these can reduce stress and improve your mood. Researchers also believe that lack of sleep contributes to a high rate of depression. To prevent getting mental illness, make sure to avoid alcohol and drugs. People sometimes use alcohol and other drugs to “self-medicate” but in reality, alcohol and other drugs only aggravate problems. Eating nutritious foods isn’t just important for our bodies, but it’s also important for our minds. Certain mineral deficiencies such as Iron and Vitamin B12 deficiencies can give us a low mood. If you're stressed or anxious person, you should

try limiting out caffeine as this can make you feel jittery and anxious. Stress is often unavoidable, but knowing what triggers your stress and knowing how to cope is key in maintaining good mental health. Try to manage your responsibilities and worries by making a list or a schedule of when you can resolve each issue. To improve your mental health, you could do something you enjoy. Try to make time for doing the fun things you enjoy. If you like going for a walk, painting or singing, try to set aside time to enjoy yourself. If we don't spend any time doing things we enjoy, we can become irritable and unhappy. Even though there’s a lot of struggles in this current situation, these hard times made us appreciate our parents who stays with us all the time to guide and take care of us. They also work day and night to fulfill our reasonable, and sometimes unreasonable demands. Spending more time with them gave us an opportunity to understand them and to learn what quality time is. This pandemic is teaching us many lessons about life. We should learn to handle difficulties with a positive mind and hopefully, these lessons remain with us throughout our lives. Life is not only about studies, TV and games, it is about sharing and standing with each other during any phase of life. There is an end to every nightmare, and this one shall end soon.

GENDER ISN’T A RANK: CALLING FOR TRUE GENDER EQUALITY By: Althea Chua

O

n January 14, 2021 President Duterte says presidency is not for a woman as an answer to the people asking her daughter to run for president. “You know, the emotional setup of a woman and man is completely different. You’ll become a fool here”, he continues to say, looking down on women and saying that women will not be able to handle the difficulties, hardships, and stress of becoming the president of the Philippines. Gender discrimination has been happening for more than 8000 years and up to this day lots of people are still victims of it. This is the unequal, disadvantageous, and different treatment to an individual or to a group of people just because they are a certain gender. It can happen anywhere in the world especially in public places like in work, shops, hospitals, schools and even in your own home. People lose their jobs, get fired for no reason, get weird stares and nasty comments because of this, it can also greatly affect one’s mental health which can lead to serious mental health illnesses. This can also be the reason of abuse, sexual harassment, and genderbased violence, meaning people would go that far and commit crimes just because the person targeted is a specific gender. Inequality in treatment happens because of the role and place, society assigned to women and men. It’s also because of conservatives and closeminded people who cannot accept the LGBTQ+ com-

munity. Society taught and convinced us that women aren’t fit for jobs and that they should always serve their partners, stay at home to do house chores and nothing more. No one would look twice if a man wears shorts. If a woman, however, wears shorts she will be viewed negatively and called names. On the other hand people who are part of the LGBTQ+ community aren’t socially accepted because to a lot of people, it is a sin and they think it’s disgusting. Men benefit from this because according to society they will always be more superior, capable of leading and providing for their family. Men will always get praised no matter how little their contribution is. Women, always have to prove themselves just to be seen as equal to men. Women also barely get respect in their field of work just because people think they aren’t of capable of doing a great job on their work, no matter how high their position is. Especially in the field of business,

people wouldn’t believe it if a woman said they were the CEO or the boss. They will always have to work twice as hard just to get credit and have their work or business well-known. People always look down on women not knowing they have invented and contributed so much to the economy and has helped lots of countries grow. For example Sarah Boone who invented the ironing board on the year 1892, Letitia Geer who invented the medical syringe on the year 1899 and Florence Parpart who invented the electric refrigerator on the year 1914. The LGBTQ+ community also has one of the hardest times fitting in society and just living in general. Although we are slowly growing to accept them, lots of people still think of them as disgusting people just because they think it is against their beliefs. Sometimes even their own family and relatives don’t accept them even if they didn’t choose to be that way and have done nothing wrong.

Illustrated by: Sky Aquino

They get weird stares, abused, harassed, and kicked out of their own home which leads to thinking if something is wrong with them, and a lot of times their confidence decreases because of what people say. They are constantly disrespected, bullied, misgendered, and looked down on. Especially here in the Philippines, if they say they are part of the community they might never get a job and sometimes their own schools would even be ashamed of them no matter how well they do. Lots of people forget that gender equality actually benefits us all. Not only does it provide the LGBTQ+ community and women equal access to education, health care, decent work, and proper representation in the political and economic decision making but it also removes the stereotypes and pressure we have put onto men. We can only achieve gender equality if we all work together. Being more loud and strict on laws like the Magna Carta for women, CEDAW, and the Republic Act 7192 which all helps give, protect, and promote women rights against gender discrimination. Another law that helps give us equality is the SOGIE bill that give the LGBTQ+ community and cis-gender people’s rights, this ensures that every gender is equal and no one is inferior. With these said, everyone should participate in activities that help promote gender equality, not only does it benefit us but it can decrease the problems the future generation will have to face.

FILIPINO WORKERS DESERVE MORE

By: Sky Aquino

Be Yourself: We Shouldn’t be Afraid of Who We Are

D

iscrimination among LGBTQIA+ people in the Philippines is very common, with almost everyone getting discriminated to the point that even the youth, can’t get away with it. As someone who likes the same gender as me, or women, I do feel discriminated sometimes, whether it be directly or indirectly, especially before when I still go to school and meet with my classmates. School was supposed to be a safe place for me and to the others, but here, it’s the complete opposite. When I realized that I’m different from the others, that I like people who are the same gender as mine, instead of feeling free to tell it to people, I was more scared. Scared of how the others might think of me, scared that they might not accept me for who I really am. So I had to keep it all to myself for a while. Before, the last thing I would do is to expose myself for being a part of the LGBTQIA+, and there are various reasons as to why. In my school, most of the students would either laugh or bully you once they know that you’re gay, regardless if you’re popular or just a random student in school. It doesn’t really matter to

them. So I never knew who I should trust. Even if there are laws regarding bullying, because of the absence of effective implementation and monitoring, LGBT youth kept facing discrimination. And it made me, and the others just continue to keep everything a secret.

R

ecently, an issue has disclosed how underpaid Filipino workers are and how they are used with having low income even though they deserved more. A human resource agent posted on a social media platform that they offered a job to someone and got declined because of the starting salary which was P37, 000. The role they offered was for an entry level marketing associate. They said that the person wanted at least P60, 000 – starting salary which angered a lot of Filipinos, because she was a fresh graduate, ignoring the fact that the person they offered the job had solid foundation, excellent communication skills, did internships abroad and she was invited for the interview which she did not apply for. That woman knew that her qualifications were worth more than what they had offered and did not justify her worth.

As for me, I just wonder why they can’t ensure the safety of the LGBT youths, when they have the power to? Why can’t they protect us from the homophobes around us? Why can’t they protect us from the discrimination all of us kept getting every single time? Because the more we feel unprotectThis just shows how Filipied, it also makes us more nos are so used to getting ununsafe too. derpaid that they think it is all But I realized that even if we, I, feel discriminated at times, there are still many people who support me and the others. There are still people willing to protect us from the homophobes. They accept us for being who we are. Being a part of the LGBTQIA+ community is not a ‘sin’ like the others say. We do not have to be scared of what the others think. Because they are not us, I am not them. They have no right to tell us what we should do, and what we should be.

right to settle for less even though their qualifications show that they deserved more. This is something our government should pay more attention to and shall work on changing it. Even though price rates for necessities are getting higher, our income is only getting lower, especially provincial wages and rates. This shows us the government isn't handling it well and they cannot balance the price rates to

the rate of income of Filipino citizens. Living expenses these days are getting higher due to this pandemic and people are having a much harder time earning money and surviving, especially with the low income rate. The Philippines even ranked 95th among 110 countries with the average salary of P15,200. Compared to our neighboring countries like Malaysia who have an average salary of P43,100 which ranked 49th and Thailand who have an average salary of P30,700 which ranked 60th. There is a major difference and it is evident that the Philippines has such a low minimum wage for an overpopulated country. Filipino workers have long suffered due to overworking even without proper income for how well and how much they work, and it’s disappointing that to this day the people who work so hard to provide our basic needs and necessities are still some of the most underpaid workers in this country. Agricultural workers have an average salary of P331 a day, most times their income doesn’t even reach ten pesos or more. Same with fishermen, their average income per month is only P15, 000 even though they risk their lives just to feed us. Both underpaid, overworked, and underappreciated, they deserve better but sadly our government wouldn’t do anything about it. Continue to Page 7...

Exposing School’s Toxic System: Are We Properly Educating Our Students?

D“Youth is the hope of

r. Jose Rizal once said,

Motherland”.

There are millions of blossoming children and youths who are deemed to have a bright future not just in our country, but everywhere around the globe. One way of preserving these children’s potential is through education. Yet these ‘educated’ children we expected to be successful, why didn’t they all become successful? Why did some of them with great potential wasted away, or some pushed to the edge to end their lives in such a young age? Are we really giving proper, fair education for our “future hopes”? Every child, or “student” have a different gift unique from others. Not everyone has the same strengths and weaknesses, as some may be good at Science but not in Math. So why are schools putting students of different strengths and weaknesses, and expect them (or even pressure them) to have the same grade or quality of performance? Students learn through different ways: Some are visual/spatial learners, some are Continued from Page 6 Teachers, engineers, architects, physicians, nurses and construction workers, have such a low salary here in the Philippines compared to the salary they have in other countries. Teachers only have an income of P20,674 per month considering that they help and teach children and teenagers to become more knowledgeable and become the future of this country. Engineers, architects, and construction workers all contribute to help build homes, buildings, and roads yet only have an income of P11,100 – P25,000 per month, already includ-

auditory, some through verbal, some through physical/ kinesthetic. Some prefer to learn alone or learn better with partners or groups. Not all students have the same learning method. Let’s say 60% of the students in a class are verbal/linguistic learners, 30% are visual learners, and 10% are kinesthetic learners, and if a school teaches using the learning method of the majority, then wouldn’t be that unfair for the 40% of the class? Wouldn’t the 40% have a hard time learning? So why then do most teachers expect that all students would fully understand the lesson, which was thought using only one learning method? Another toxic way of education is the way some teachers do recitation. Which is more fair? A recitation where students raise their hands yet only one gets called? Or a recitation where students write their answers on a piece of paper or a whiteboard and display their answers once time is up, where everyone can recite? Most likely you’ll say that the second option is fairer, yet sadly teachers often do the first. An example of a problem caused by this oral recitation is where a student accidently shouts the answer ing all the hours they work overtime just to finish their job. Even in this pandemic, physicians and nurses are still one of the most underpaid workers even though they are risking their lives to save people, help this country overcome the pandemic, and do everything in their power to keep us safe. They do all that yet physicians’ salary per month is only P39, 837 and for nurses, only P19, 881, sometimes even lower. This is a big factor on why Filipinos choose to work overseas, leaving behind their families in order to keep them alive. Even if we say that people should focus on enjoying

Detrimental By: Maureen Udaundo

while forgetting to raise his/ her hand, another student’s hears it and gets called by the teacher and says the answer. The student who was called was given the credit while the other student is left frustrated. Another scenario is where students rush to raise their hands, hoping to be called yet another student gets called instead and gets the point, leaving them disappointed. What can we compare this situation to? A competition; where everyone is gifted and talented yet only one person can win. I suggest that teachers use the second option more often, because here everyone can recite, everyone gets the credit. At least here, even if a student gets a wrong answer, he will be relieved to know that he’s not the only one who got it wrong. Sometimes, misunderstanding and confusions happen, leading to incorrect answers. It’s alright because all people make mistakes and mistakes can help us improve ourselves. That’s what teachers should let the students know, rather than making it seem that incorrect answers are a means of failure. Another form of competition which happens in almost every school; comparing grades. Grade is just a numtheir job, we should also remember that we didn’t study for almost half our lives just to get underpaid and overworked. Being an adult comes with so many responsibilities, we have taxes to pay, families to feed, and dreams we want to achieve. All these responsibilities require money and where do we get money? We have to work for it. In conclusion, this is another issue that we, Filipinos, and our government should work on changing to prevent overworked employees and separation from their families just so they can survive in this cruel world. Change can only be

ber, yet many students feel so down when they see a line of 7 or 6. Even the honor students who are pressured to strive for the best feel disappointed when their line of 9’s suddenly drop to a line of 8. Those who have high grades are often viewed as very intelligent, while the those with lines of 8 and below are often viewed as dumb or ‘bobo’. This is a misconception that is happening until now. To make things worse, it’s not just the parents or classmates who assume based on grades, even the teachers do so. I partially agree with the saying that “kami ang gumagawa

ng grades namin”,

but biases and favoritism happens in schools. There are some teachers who ‘guess’ students’ grades and when asked by concerned parents they form up all sorts of unreasonable excuses just to convince the parents that their child deserves the grade they’d given. Teachers should be honest with giving the students their grades, and even if some students’ grades are low, teachers should remind them that ‘grade is just a number’ yet encourage them to improve.

achieved if everyone is willing to help improve and remove the system that enables the act of underpaying Filipino workers but I hope that everyone will realize that this benefits us all no matter how privileged you already are. After all, Filipinos deserve a better pay that justifies the amount of time we put into working and how excellent our skills are, and we deserve to get recognition for the work we do to help this developing country improve and become better for its citizens.

n this modern era where technology and the internet is a necessity for everyone, an example of this would be “social media”. You have probably heard of it, or even used it. It is a platform where users can share their ideas, pictures, thoughts and moments in their life. Examples of these social media platforms are Facebook, YouTube, Twitter, MySpace and etc. A lot of people have joined these platforms since the early 2000s and more have joined in the past years and have made it a necessary tool in our modern era. These social media platforms are also filled with influencers who have a lot of fans and followers whom are very interested about their life and is the reason why these influencers post about their daily life or stream themselves playing video games and etc. How did it become necessary in our modern era? It has become a place to share important information such as news and knowledge, these are important because social media has become a platform to learn from, however be aware there are people who spread misinformation. Manu users are fooled by said misinformation. Now during the emergence of our era, a lot of people have gained attraction on these social media platforms and

have turned into “internet influencers” whom may promote products through personal use or sponsorships from companies. Said companies like to pay these “internet influencers” a good amount of money for the influencer to promote their product and most of these influencers do not do any kind of research on the product that they are promoting. This causes a lot of risks for the followers who like to follow the person they idolize.

A problem has risen from this and it is that most of these products have not been medically approved yet, this is a major risk to the health of many people because said products are not for

with no medical approval, and countries like the Philippines where almost everyone cares about beauty and their looks, they most likely will buy anything these “influencers” promote. They will think the influencer always uses this product to look good and will make them look good too. Most people do not realize this and will carry on with using the product for them to look “beautiful” or “handsome” because they want to meet these “beauty standards” for them to “fit in”. This problem is also caused by the beauty industry because they compare models to the common people which lowers their self-esteem, confidence and trust in themselves that they are beautiful. It has caused a chain reaction where now most people rely on these “beauty products” and also makes them convinced to purchase beauty products from influencers which of whom had also not medically approved of the product yet. This is the sad reality of how most people are easily swayed to believe they aren’t beautiful which makes them buy products that are not even verified by medical professionals. An advice is to do extensive research on the product that you are buying to verify that it is safe for you to use and will not harm you in any way.

hina knocked off Italy in the Women's Volleyball National League 2019 last June 6, 2019 at Hong Kong, China with the scores of 18-25, 22-25, 25 -23, 26-24, 15-13, securing their spot as one of the last 4 countries to compete in the finals. Italy's ace player, Paola Egonu, topped all scorers with 39 points followed by China's Liu Xiaotong and Liu Yanhan who scored 18 points. However, Egonu's 39 was not enough to beat the host country in this game.
