For Your Eyes Only
INVITATION Thursday 20th November 2008
007 JAMES BOND James Bond was ‘born’ on a February morning in 1952 when Ian Fleming, a middle-aged journalist, started to type the novel he had been promising to write since the war. ‘Casino Royale’ was a pacy spy thriller that introduced the world to 007, a daring secret agent: solitary, cunning, ruthless, with a taste for the good things in life - and a licence to kill. To this heady cocktail, Fleming added other ingredients: exotic locations, beautiful women and evil villains. He drew both on his considerable imagination and his wartime service in Naval Intelligence.
THE EXHIBITION For Your Eyes Only: 2008 marks the centenary of the birth of the writer, Ian Fleming, creator of James Bond. To mark Ian Fleming’s extraordinary and lasting contribution to British culture and to celebrate his life, various events are planned throughout the year. Featuring fascinating material, the ‘For Your Eyes Only’ exhibition, at the Imperial War Museum, London is on display for the first time. These include a selection of annotated Bond manuscripts, and Fleming’s Colt Python .357 Magnum revolver. Material from the films includes the ‘blood–splattered’ shirt worn by Daniel Craig in Casino Royale, along with prototypes of Rosa Klebb’s flick–knife shoes in From Russia With Love and Halle Berry’s bikini from Die Another Day. The exhibition examines the extent to which the book and films reflect the reality of the Cold War and how much they were a product of Fleming’s prodigious imagination.
