Making you feel beautiful from the inside out

Lingerie for Beautiful Brides

Your Gown and Your Bridal Lingerie

What to Expect When You Visit

Your undergarments have a big impact on how your wedding gown fits you, and how you look and feel. Starting with the right foundations means you look and feel your best - which is why Knickers ‘n Lace makes you feel beautiful from the inside out!

It’s important to investigate what undergarment options are available for the gown styles you’re considering before you make a final decision on your dress, so you can be sure you have the right foundation for a beautiful fit. Knickers ‘n Lace is happy to consult with you during this process. Plan to have your bridal lingerie fitting 3 months before your wedding day, which allows time for specialty orders and alterations, if required. Wear your wedding day undergarments to your final gown fitting to ensure you get a perfect fit! Are you considering a backless, strapless gown? Be aware that there are very limited undergarment options available for this style, particularly for larger bust sizes. To avoid disappointment, talk to the ladies at Knickers ‘n Lace first!

Fittings at Knickers ‘n Lace are complimentary, with no appointment necessary. Bridal fittings usually take 1-2 hours; allow yourself time for an unhurried visit. Bring pictures of your gown from multiple angles (or you can bring your gown in if you’re comfortable doing so). Your fitter will take care of the rest - while you relax in your fitting room, she’ll bring you options and help you find the right fit. Knickers ‘n Lace offers a ‘24-hour Approval’ on bridal bustiers - simply leave a credit card number, and take the bustier home to try with your dress. If it works, call the shop to let them know and they’ll take payment. If it doesn't work, return it the next day.

The shop offers a wide range of styles and sizes for bridal lingerie, from petite to plus, including bustiers. Increasingly, brides are choosing shapewear solutions rather than a traditional bustier. Whichever you choose, well fitting lingerie smooths the figure, shapes the body, and gives proper lift in the bust, which in turn complements your gown for a beautiful wedding day look.

20

CONFETTIMAGAZINE.CA

They also offer a bridal registry - choose the lingerie pieces you love, and they’ll be kept on file

(if a specific piece were to be sold out, they can help find a similar gift option). This is also a great help for your spouse for future gift giving! They offer beautiful complimentary gift wrapping too.

Lingerie For all Brides Knickers ‘n Lace offers a large range of bridal lingerie, from bras and bustiers to shapewear, panties, and hosiery, as well as a very nice selection of bridal garters - most brides choose a pretty keepsake garter for themselves, and a simple toss garter for the reception. There are fun options like hanky panky stretch lace thongs featuring crystal embellishment like “I Do”, “Mrs” and “Bride” as well as “Bridesmaid” and “Maid of Honour” - a perfect gift for your bridal gang! The shop even has embroidered linen handkerchiefs, which make a beautiful gift for moms and grandmas.

Lingerie for For The Honeymoon Knickers ‘n Lace carries a beautiful selection of bridal and honeymoon lingerie, so you’re sure to find the perfect pieces for your wedding night and honeymoon. Whether it’s a cute babydoll, a lace chemise, an elegant satin gown, or something a little more daring… there’s something for everyone, whatever your style. You’ll look forward to slipping into a special piece of lingerie that will make you

The ladies at Knickers ‘n Lace would love to help you

prepare for your boudoir photo shoot! They provide fittings

in a fun atmosphere where you’ll feel comfortable and enjoy getting prepared for your boudoir experience.

You’ll have had a consultation with your photographer and decided on the general style of your shoot - so just let

your fitter know the vibe you’re trying to create, and she’ll

help you find pieces that fit the theme. Whether it’s classic

beauty - satin gowns and pretty chemises - or you want to

play the sexy vixen - bodysuits, thigh highs, garter belts and sexy wear - Knickers ‘n Lace will help you choose lingerie

that you feel both comfortable and beautiful in. Allow 1-2

hours for a boudoir consultation, no appointment necessary.

Q: What are the biggest

Once we find the right width and fit then we can incorporate his

rings and wedding sets

the largest selections of gentleman’s wedding bands in Alberta!

right now?

We have everything from classic designs, modern and edgy, to

A: One trend that’s really been center stage lately is choosing a classically designed engagement ring accompanied by

old school cool; an updated version of his Dad’s ring. A current favourite would be from the Carlex ring line which men really gravitate towards because of its clean lines, contemporary design; it looks like a really cool watch band that matches his only other piece of jewellery, a watch!

multiple, trendy, stacking bands. We love the idea of having an engagement ring that is so timeless and regal that it can be passed down from generation to generation. But by adding trendy stackable bands in different metal colours, patterns and textures you can really make your

wedding set personalized, contemporary and unique. The great thing about this look is that it is really practical as well. If in a few years you no longer want to wear these bands with your ring, you can simply re-size them and wear them on a different finger! PRODUCT SHOWN:18 KARAT WHITE GOLD CARLEX WEDDING BAND STARTING AT $2,500.00

Q: How are bridesmaid’s gifts evolving? What would you recommend as the best gift a bride could choose for her tribe? A: We used to see brides try to find jewelry for their attendants to wear on the actual wedding day. However, it is really challenging to find jewelry in matching multiples, which is formal enough to wear on the big day and still suits your bridesmaids’ individual styles. Now brides are gifting more casual pieces in styles their tribe will actually love and wear AFTER the wedding. We recommend checking out our local Calgary brand, Peaks & Prairies. All pieces are inspired by Canada, made in solid sterling silver or 14k gold, donate 10% of proceeds to the Nature Conservancy of Canada, and almost all can be engraved. So why not get your bridesmaids something you

will see them wearing on a patio with you after the big day, reminiscing about all the fun you had.

A: Well firstly, we would definitely say that comfort is king! Men will not wear anything that isn’t comfortable and that includes

their wedding band. Generally speaking when a ring is exceptionally wide, it doesn’t lend well to swelling fingers, which is really common when it’s hot outside, playing sports or after a few beers with the guys. Also look for a band that has a comfort fit to it, which is a smooth beveled inside that allows for swelling, doesn’t have any harsh edges and is generally more comfortable overall.

f there ever was a day to feel your most spectacular it’s the day you say "I do". You’ll certainly be glowing from within, but we can all benefit from a few little tweaks on the outside too. You’ll want to feel like the best, most confident version of yourself in front of all those you love (and in all of those photos of course). You’ll likely want to trust the experts to execute your wedding day look, they’re pros at making your best features pop, and there’s nothing like a little pampering to calm those pre-nuptial nerves.

Beauty & The Bride BY JESSILYN FORIGO

Make the most of your once in a lifetime look with some tried and true tips and a few extravagant extras. Get Your Glow On Maybe you’re blessed with naturally flawless and glowing skin – lucky lady. But if you’re like the rest of us mere mortals you might need a little help making your canvas as perfect as possible. Visit beauty counters early and try on products like primers, concealers and foundations to see what works for you. Share this information with your artist at your trial – chances are they’ll have something similar!

The Eyes Have It The eyes are the windows to the soul but they're also the floodgates for the waterworks. On this emotional day make sure whatever products you use on your pretty peepers are formulated to withstand the happy tears and leave you streak and smudge free.

Don’t Be Scared to Dial It Up We’ve got news for you – there are going to be photos. Lots of them. While you might be a pared down princess when it comes to your day-to-day products, this is the day to enhance just a little bit extra, accentuating your features with a bit of a heavier hand to ensure you read flawless not flat in all those forever images.

Oh, and don’t hesitate to pick a pro!

" Wedding makeup is not about trends, its about personal style and to achieve longevity and timeless makeup that is zero fuss and enhances you naturally. We study your skin and the anatomy of your face and eyes to see what would work the best for you, consider internal and external factors and adjust accordingly on game day from what was tested at pre-wedding trial." - Trena Olfert of Trena Laine Makeup Studio

Crowning Glory BY JESSILYN FORIGO

Your mane plays a major role in your overall bridal look. Let us share some tips to ensure your tresses are tops. Consider Your Venue An elegant up-do tells a different story than a tousled braid or flowing waves. The style you choose should echo the tone of your dress, your accessories and your day overall. Ballroom Banquet? Keep it classic. Beach-side Bash? Romantic and relaxed is a perfect fit.

Lock in Your locks Your strands are going to have to stand up to a lot more movement than usual. From family hugs to first dances, breezy photos to bumps by the bar, make sure you’ve used the products ( or extra pins) to give your style some staying power.

Wear the Hair No matter what style you choose you should always feel (and look!) like you – just maybe a slightly more dialed-up version. Don’t choose a hairstyle that makes you feel uncomfortable. Wear your hair, don’t let your hair wear you!

Oh, and get some expert assistance!

"Bridal hair is all about enhancing your natural beauty. Whether it's long hairstyles or a romantic and tousled look, each style is executed with the utmost care and expertise. Trials are such an essential part of the process as we customize each hairstyle for every individual. Weddings are a special moment and memory to be cherished - we always feel extremely honoured to be part of a couple’s special day."– Justin Hammer of Hammer Headz Salon JEWELLERY: JOANNA BISLEY DESIGNS MADISON - BRIDAL COMB ABIGALE - BRIDAL HAIR VINE JENNIFER - HAIR PINS, SET OF 3

M

any grooms struggle with visualizing what they want

in saturated hues spell absolute luxury.

to wear when they stand at the end of the aisle waiting for their love - they come up with general terms, like "casual" or "formal," words that can be hard to translate into actual fashion choices. This challenge can lead grooms to avoid actually tackling this to-do item until too late, leaving them rushed to make a decision, and usually stuck with the old stand-bys. But don’t let this happen. There is far too much fabulous men’s fashion to be had! What a groom wears on his wedding day is no longer just a fashion footnote. Read on for a primer on how to ensure his sartorial success:

Get Him Inspired To help your groom articulate his fashion aspirations, he doesn't even need to change the channel. Professional athletes and sports broadcasters often have a great sense of style - all he has to do is point out the outfits he likes best.

Get Him Shopping Once you've pinpointed what look he wants, whether it's a slick three-piece suit or a great pair of pants with suspenders, call ahead to a few stores to make fitting appointments. That way, he'll know exactly what the plan is and how long you two will be shopping for.

Get Him Comfortable No matter what your vision of what he should be wearing is, if he's not comfortable in the clothes and the style, he won't look his best. Make sure that you're fusing his vision and the overall concept for the wedding and give him the final say - after all, this is his chance to express himself through his fashion choices.

Finding Your Photographer BY ALIX WILLIAMS

W

hat's hard to believe is that your wedding day is just that -

only one day. The food will be eaten. The decor put away. The dress preserved and packed. Your wedding photos are what stay with you for the rest of your life. That's why picking the right wedding photographer is so important. It's not just about budget, it's not just about photography style, and it's not just about your rapport with the photographer. It's a crucial mix of all three of these elements that get you to photographic magic. So where and how do you start your search for a great photographer? The pages of Confetti are filled with incredible photographers of all styles and budgets. Use sticky notes to mark the photos that really stick out to you and try to identify what you love about them. The lighting? The candour? The energy? Next, do a little social snooping - follow each of the photographers on Instagram and Facebook to get a better idea of their range and style. Their captions will speak to who they are as a person, and you can tell so much from that! When you're ready for a first date (eeeek!!), prepare a few questions in advance. How do they handle unexpected events like rain, or delays? What is their turnaround time to process and send your images? What are their favourite moments to capture at weddings? It's also a great time to articulate what you want in terms of photographs – maybe formal portraits with your family and bridal party are extremely important or perhaps candid moments with your guests are a higher priority. Your time and research will entirely pay off when in 50 years your wedding feels like it was just yesterday (thanks to those fantastic photos!).

Exceptional Engagement Photos BY ALIX WILLIAMS

Your engagement is a magical time in your relationship when you are building dreams together and learning how to navigate through life as a team. An engagement shoot is an amazing way to capture this excitement, show off your personality as a couple outside of the formality of the wedding day, and find out how you work best together in front of the camera. You will never regret photographing yourselves as a couple in the weeks leading up to your wedding day – here’s how to make it perfect. Tip 1 Ask For Your Babe’s Input - This may seem obvious, but so many couples forget to collaborate on their vision for the shoot, so start by asking your partner what they want. On the one hand, they might not have any ideas, but on the other, they might have some great nuggets of inspiration.

Tip 2 Bring Props - Whether it's a chalkboard you can write silly things on, your fur baby or a picnic basket full of fresh fruit, props add easy livelihood to your engagement photos.

Tip 3 Plan Your Outfits - Obviously you've been planning your own outfit, but make sure it works with your babes outfit too!

Tip 4 Be Real - If you're a more casual couple choose a setting that feels cozy and comfortable. If you're more formal and fancy it's great if your photos reflect that style. These images are all about capturing who you really are together. PHOTOGRAPHER: YUEKO IMAGE FEATURED COUPLE: BRITTANY & JEFF

et ready for your close-up! Outside of

the big day itself there are lots of other wedding

related occasions you may want to capture.

1. Showers and Soirées Bring on the parties! From engagement parties to bridal showers and all the brunches in between, when you say “YES!” the celebration floodgates swing WIDE open! Your bride tribe will put in hours of work planning pre-wedding parties, and your perfect shower needs to look perfect for Instagram! Honour their work, their vision and their love for you by booking your photographer to stop by and grab a few photos.

2. Bachelorette/Bachelor Parties We get it. There are some “say-farewell-to-single” parties that you may not want photo evidence of, but more often than not, reliving all the antics and hilarity is worth the odd (slightly) embarrassing photo. Consider hiring a photographer to join you paparazzi style for at least part of your celebration. CHRISTY D. SWANBERG PHOTOGRAPHY

3. Day After Photo Session Perfect for couples who would rather celebrate with guests during cocktail hour than sneak away for portraits. Have an afternoon portrait session with just you, your babe and your photographer the day AFTER the wedding. Bonus points, you get to get all dolled up in your gown again!

4. Boudoir A framed boudoir photo makes an ultra-sexy prewedding gift for your babe but why not take it up a notch and go for a couple’s boudoir session? Give him a new set of skivvies and rip his shirt off for a sexy day that will end in sexy photos (and maybe more!) KELLY SZOTT PHOTOGRAPHY

Fabulous First Looks BY JESSILYN FORIGO

W

hile the fantasy of seeing your beloved in their

wedding finery for the first time as they make their way down the aisle is what wedding day dreams are made of for so many, the pace of a packed wedding day means some couples are choosing to forgo this moment. Instead, they’re enjoying “first look” sessions where they meet up just prior to the ceremony allowing for more uninterrupted time together and an amazing photo opportunity. Following the first look, photographers capture the formal wedding portraits and couples photography. This means couples can bask in the post –ceremony bliss without rushing off for photos and can even enjoy their own cocktail hour ( arguably one of the most fun parts of the party!) alongside their guests. First looks certainly aren’t for everyone, but for some couples this break with tradition takes just the right amount of pressure off, allowing them to enjoy every moment of their day just a little bit more.

Would you recommend a first look photo session to other couples, and why? "Since our wedding, we have recommended a first look photo session to everyone we know that's getting married. Doing a first look lets you share in each other's emotions in such a way that you're free to embrace one another and say exactly how you feel without having to worry about others watching. The amazing part is having the moment captured and being able to look back on one of our fondest memories from the wedding." – Christiane & Jeff

THE DETAILS

“ The details are not the details. They make the design.” —Charles Eames

T

here are certainly a lot of details to consider

when planning what’s likely to be the biggest event you’ll ever host. But these little somethings are the elements of your big day where you get to express your style as a couple, create unexpected moments of enjoyment for your guests and stimulate your senses. Stationery, florals and indulgent sweets are the gorgeous luxuries that signal “This day is something special, let’s celebrate.” Instead of seeing the details as something to dread, indulge your senses, your imagination and your creativity and find delight!

Sweet Delights Few things bring celebration to mind quicker than cake. BY JESSILYN FORIGO

T

raditionally signifying prosperity and happiness, as well as the

couple’s promise to always provide for one another, modern wedding cakes have also become works of art. They can be inspired by décor trends, fashion or even your favorite flower or gemstone. They can incorporate watercolour work, edible flowers, spun sugar or even tiny sweet treat toppers like macarons, meringues and candied fruit. Cakes are a centerpiece of your reception, and these show-stoppers deserve to take center stage. Not only do they look gorgeous, they taste amazing too. Bakers continue to take creativity to new heights, producing exceptional flavours that are anything but ordinary. Flavours modeled after favorite family recipes, herbal infusions and even savoury options open up a whole new world of wedding cake – see below for some of the wildest ones we’re noticing now.

Cocktail Infused Cakes Cakes infused with champagne, spirits and even robust stout are getting the party started on a sweet note. Pair with complimentary flavours like berries for champagne, stone fruits for whiskies and indulgent chocolate or coffee with stout for a dynamic and delicious dessert experience.

PHOTO: CHLOE BUIE PHOTOGRAPHY CAKE: SUGAR BY TRACY

Savoury Infusions Think lemon and basil, plum and cardamom, vanilla and lavender; these offerings are anything but sickly sweet and appeal to refined palates who appreciate culinary creativity. The trick here is in the subtlety of the herbal notes; this is an occasion where just a hint is what you’re after.

Cakes That Aren’t Cakes at All Cakes made of wheels of cheese in a variety of flavours satisfies those who’d rather enjoy savoury than sweet (it’s also a perfect accompaniment to that wedding wine). Or share one of your favorite treats usually reserved for weekend mornings with all of your guests with a cake made entirely out of pancakes, waffles or crepes!

SUITE PAPER BY ALIX WILLIAMS

Stationery doesn't start or end with your invitations. If you're a paper lover who spends hours admiring great graphic design, there's no reason your stationery suite can't be incorporated into all aspects of your wedding planning and decor! Here are a few cute ways to get some mileage from your stationery suite.

PHOTO: CHRISTY D. SWANBERG PHOTOGRAPHY STATIONERY: BLOOM INVITES

PLANNING: Once your stationery design is confirmed, print a special cover to slip inside your wedding planning binder. Incorporate your signature stationery style on your planning labels, as well as any labels you print when you hit up the wedding shows.

PRE-WEDDING: Of course, your save the dates and invitations are the belle of the stationery ball! Your invitation suite can include (but isn't limited to) save the dates, rehearsal dinner invitations, wedding invitations, website cards, reply cards, envelopes and envelope liners, direction and accommodation cards and

postage stamps.

DAY OF: Shower your guests with gorgeous stationery - for your wedding day stationery, consider programs, place cards, escort cards, table numbers, menus, favour cards, aisle runners, coasters and signage.

POST-WEDDING: The stationery fun hasn't ended - follow up your wedding with thank you cards, envelopes and liners to give your guests something to remember your day!

Plenty of Petals A focus on florals BY JESSILYN FORIGO

Y

our wedding florals are one of the most impactful decisions

you’ll make about the overall look and feel of your wedding décor. The colours, textures and fragrance should echo your overall vision. The addition of florals truly transforms a space and adds instant romance to any room and there are so many ways to incorporate florals into your wedding day that go beyond the bouquet.

Ceremony Décor Sure you thought about centrepieces but what about using florals to add a pop of colour to your ceremony? Floral nosegays hand-tied to chairs that line the aisle, a floral garland beautifully draped over a wooden arbour, or pretty petals lining your aisle are all beautiful ways to add blooms.

Gifts of Honour Instead of tossing your bouquet consider having it tied so that it breaks apart into smaller bouquets you can present to the women (or men) in your life that mean the most to you like mothers, grandmothers or special mentors. Bonus points if you’ve included florals with sentimental meaning or symbolism of respect, love and friendship.

Floral Favours What about sending guests home with their own personal minibouquet to enjoy? A flower bar makes a stunning statement piece and at the end of the night guests can select blooms to place in pretty paper cones or inexpensive mini vases to take home and enjoy. Ceremony Success BY JESSILYN FORIGO

Your ceremony venue sets the stage for some of the most memorable and meaningful moments of your life. A few careful considerations can ensure you get hitched without a hitch. Set Up for Sight-lines Your guest will want to watch you exchange your vows, and ideally, not just the backs of your heads! Consider how you can set up the ceremony space so all guests can see you as you say I do. You can also switch up the way you’ll stand so that you’re seen in profile, or even have your officiant face the back and have you face toward your friends and family so they can see your full ( very happy!) faces.

Get the Light Right The sunshine beaming through the windows is certainly beautiful but those harsh shadows might be anything but. Consult with your photographer to plan your ceremony with light as a consideration. You’ll want stunning shots of this forever moment, so a little adjustment to make sure they can capture the shots you want is key.

Account for Acoustics Some ceremony venues have acoustics that work automatically, but many will need a little support from speakers and mics to ensure everyone can hear the important words you’re exchanging. Don’t forget to test the sound to avoid volume and feedback issues.

Say no to Screens Guests will certainly want pictures of your ceremony but consider letting the professional you paid be the only one to capture these moments to avoid having a wall of screens in all of your shots. Ask guests to keep their devices turned off during the ceremony. You can include this request in your program or have your officiant announce it before your processional.

Get Personal This ceremony is first and foremost about YOUR love. Make it even more meaningful by including personal touches like songs, readings, poems or anecdotes that embody and amplify your unique love story. Finding Your Officiant BY JESSILYN FORIGO

There is so much life packed into the fleeting moments of a wedding ceremony: shared understanding and agreement between two hearts, traditions and history and emotion, a very public declaration of love in front of family and friends, not to mention legal requirements and agreements. Your officiant is more than just the person who takes you from “I do” to “we did”; they’re a wealth of knowledge and experience on how to make all of those factors as meaningful, memorable and seamless as possible. Officiants also help to set the tone for your ceremony. From contemplative and reflective to playful and celebratory, your officiant can help to showcase your personality as a couple. Research potential providers and

> Destination Wedding Services

set up an informal phone call or video chat to gauge their tone and personality before booking. Take time and care in choosing your officiant. While location, availability and religious or legal affiliation are obvious considerations, it’s most important to find someone you can genuinely connect with; if the things they say “click” for you, they’ll likely be well received by your guests too as a real reflection of your unique love story.

Weddings and Wood Fire Bridgette Bar Spotlight BY JESSILYN FORIGO

We connected with JP Pedhirney, chef at Bridgette Bar to find out why your love won’t be the only thing burning bright with a wedding celebration in his midcentury modern culinary playground. Housed inside an historic brick warehouse, Bridgette is undeniably chic and it’s unique elements make for a one of a kind wedding venue. How did you land at Bridgette Bar?

I’m a born and raised Calgarian and studied culinary arts at SAIT. I’ve worked at River Café and Rouge and then pursued more culinary training in Chicago followed by stints at Black Bird and Gilt Bar there. I came back to Calgary and was the Executive Chef at Muse and then joined Concorde 3 years ago helping to launch Ricardo’s and now I’m here!

The way the room is broken up makes it feel like you aren’t just in one static place all night. We dined in the main dining room and then opened up the rolling doors in the bar area to create a lounge with the dancefloor in the elevated loft just to the side of the bar. We even used the private dining room as a kids room where they could have snacks and watch cartoons. Their parents definitely appreciated that! Nuptial Nosh National Spotlight BY JESSILYN FORIGO

Enjoyment of food with friends and family is such an important part of celebration and never is this truer than when it comes to weddings (and all of the pre-nuptial parties leading up to them). We interviewed Justin Labossiere, Culinary Director of National, a local favorite with 4 locations in Calgary, to get his take on what makes for great food and stand-out celebrations.

What is National’s unique approach to food? Something people may not know, and we’re working on promoting, is that we make almost everything we serve from scratch and source everything from local providers. We make our own bacon, salad dressings, even pepperoni that we use as garnish on our Caesars right in house. Our beef is grass-fed, our pork and poultry are naturally raised and all sourced from local ranches and farms. We get produce from the Redhat Cooperative out of Redcliff in Southern Alberta, and we’re working toward zero interruption in getting our produce this way. For example we’ve got lettuce coming 2 days out of the ground, pesticide free, 12 months of the year from right down the road.

164

CONFETTIMAGAZINE.CA

What makes National a great location for couples thinking about their wedding celebrations? Our locations are all so unique so we have something to really suit the personality of any couple. You can go from the largest rooftop patio in western Canada at National on 8th, to a basement bowling alley and event space at National on 10th or even a champagne and oyster reception right in the heart of the action at National on 17th. You can even channel a tropical destination for a rehearsal dinner or post-wedding brunch at Ricardo’s which runs out of National on 17th – it’s tropical themed!

What is trending right now in the culinary world that could apply to wedding food and beverage choices?

Tradition With a Twist The Westin Calgary Spotlight BY JESSILYN FORIGO

Executive Sous Chef, Saurabh Singh of The Westin Calgary wants you to know that when it comes to your wedding, his heart and his history are all-in to ensure your day is perfect and your guests are treated to a meal they won’t forget. Hailing from Lucknow, India, a city famous for kebabs and biryani, Singh graduated from Hospitality and Culinary Management there. He started cooking professionally in 2003 at Oberoi Group of Hotels and worked for the Five Star Luxury Hotel - The Oberoi Amarvilas (voted top 10 Hotel in the World) and The Oberoi Mumbai. With a move to Canada in 2010, he continued his culinary career at the The Fairmont Banff Springs and then joined The Westin Calgary in 2013. He’s now an integral part of the culinary team there, a group that produces hundreds of large scale events each year. But don’t think because large group dining is an everyday occurrence for Singh that he thinks crafting culinary offerings for your wedding isn’t special. We sat down with the chef and discovered a real passion for his craft,

You produce menus covering cuisines from all corners of the globe. How do you do this so successfully? I have respect for the ingredients. My approach is about authenticity. If I’m cooking Indian food I source ingredients from Indian providers. The same applies to Italian meals or Spanish menus. ENTERTAINMENT & EXPERIENCE

CONFETTI 2018

Engaging Entertainment BY JESSILYN FORIGO

T

hey’ve teared up at the ceremony and toasted through

dinner. Now it’s time to wow guests with an unforgettable entertainment experience. There’s no end to the ways you can dial up your wedding celebration and taking a multi-dimensional approach when planning the fun factor will leave all of your guests feeling festive.

Let the Music Play Whether you choose a band, DJ or even a pre–recorded playlist, music is still the center point of your entertainment experience. Great music gets everyone in the mood to celebrate. While you certainly want to focus on music that reflects your unique taste, the best hosts try to include music that will appeal to all of their guests, if not at the same time, then at different points in the event. If your musical choices are quite polarizing, consider more approachable options for your band’s set-breaks or as alternating options for your DJ. PHOTO: ALAN MAUDIE

Interactive Experiences Don’t feel limited to a photo booth as an interactive element for your guests. Finger-paint guest books, video advice stations, bucket list builder activities and even customized crossword puzzles with clues about the couple are all great options. Entertainment doesn’t have to mean a performance, it can also mean participation! These interactive options are a great way to keep guests who aren’t the biggest dance fans feeling included.

Element of Surprise Treating guests to an unexpected experience equals the ultimate in memorable entertainment. Drum lines, acrobatic performers, dancers, performance painters or a dueling pianos set can create incredible moments of delight. You can be certain these over the top elements will have guest reminiscing about your big night long past last call.

Getting Your Light Right BY JESSILYN FORIGO

A

One of the easiest, though often overlooked, ways to transform your wedding space is lighting. You can use its transformative power in so many ways! Emphasize the Important Make sure the areas that will be the center of guest attention (and photographs) are well lit. Think ceremony space, head table, podium, cake table and dancefloor. Not only should the

B

lighting draw attention to these areas but it should be flattering for those being photographed as well – say no to shadows!

Disguise the Less Desirable Are you less than impressed with the ballroom wallpaper? Not a fan of the overbearing artwork? Use strategically placed light to draw attention away from the elements you don’t enjoy and you’ll quickly see them fade into darkness.

Create Visual Interest You can use light to highlight impressive architectural elements in the space or add texture to simple surfaces. Light can create dimension, making a space feel more alive and interesting.

Change the Ambience There’s a big difference in the way you feel on a brightly lit balcony compared to a candlelit cellar. Picture the kind of emotion you want to create in your space, think of times you’ve experienced that ambience before, and use lighting to recreate that tone.

Add Some Energy Dynamic dancefloor lighting like movers and strobes can shift the tone from romance to revelry. If it’s hard to imagine the impact lighting can have on a party, picture your favorite nightlife destination with fluorescent overhead lights – enough said. The ABC of Wedding Décor BY JESSILYN FORIGO PHOTOGRAPHER: CHRIS + LYNN PHOTOGRAPHY DECOR: LYNN FLETCHER WEDDINGS

Have you pinned and pasted and pulled out pages to the point that your inspiration feels overwhelming? Don’t panic. We can break your wedding day décor down to simple ABCs. Aesthetic Take a look at everything you’ve compiled. Look at it as a whole and you’ll surely see some trends and common themes emerging. Sure one might be nautical and preppy while another is woodsy and romantic but perhaps they both have a crisp blue, ivory and silver palate and a casual sensibility. Dig into what it is that you like about all of your inspo when viewed as a whole and you’ll nail down your overarching aesthetic.

Bang for Your Buck Now that you’ve finalized the feeling you’re trying to create consider your costs. Do some research on the items you’d like to include and see where your budget lands in relation to your initial vision. How can you maximize your impact? Say you love florals but can’t fathom breaking the bank on blooms. Get strategic about where you can place florals, and include them only in the most visible areas. Because these areas are the most eye catching, guests will still feel like your venue is awash with petals. Remember, you can borrow budget from areas you care less about to afford the items that most support the aesthetic you’re trying to achieve. Perhaps luxury linens is what will get you closest to your soft and romantic vision. Feel ok with scraping your guest favours to fund it!

Composition Now think of how you’ll place all these elements to transform your venue. Consider guest comfort and how they’ll interact with the items you’ve chosen. You’ll want to ensure seating is not just stunning but also comfortable, that centerpieces are impactful but not at eye level, and that menu fonts are fabulous but still able to be seen in soft candlelight. And if all of the above still seems a like a bit too much to tackle you can always move to D for Designer – hire one!

Tents and Temporary Structures BY JESSILYN FORIGO

An elegant tented wedding on a pristine lawn or bohemian bash on a seaside bluff are the kind of idyllic wedding settings dreams are made of, but there are a few considerations to navigate when your wedding venue is not a permanent place. Tent Type There are a variety of event tent options available, each with their own pros and cons. Pole tents, as their name would suggest, are structured with poles and guy - wires and while this means a few poles will be visible on the interior of the tent, this type of tent has high peaks and beautiful, classic lines. The frame, or clearpsan, tent is another popular option. Structured on a frame, there are no poles inside so sightlines are clean, but the overall lines of the tent are less visually interesting. Additionally, because set-up and weighting or anchoring of the tent is more labour intensive, the cost is significantly higher. Still, the perfectly airy and wide open aesthetic of the clearspan tent makes it a popular choice. There are other options as well including Sail Cloth Tents and High peak versions so it’s best to consult a tent expert who can evaluate your location, your aesthetic and your available budget to recommend the most appropriate option for you.

Securing The Structure Additionally, most tents need to be staked into the ground and permits need to be obtained to ensure you won’t encounter any underground lines. You’ll also need to ensure clearance to all overhead power lines and nearby structures. Enlist the experts to ensure proper preliminary safety calls are made and your tent is secured soundly.

Adding Amenities Lastly, because a tent is, well, a tent, you’ll have to think through how you’ll provide all of the necessary amenities that a permanent structure would offer. Washroom trailers and handwashing stations, power for lighting and charging devices, dancefloors and equipment for heating and cooling the space. Building your own wedding venue from the ground up takes next-level nuptial planning – enlist the pros to ensure you’re nailing down all the necessities while raising the roof. Selecting Your Support BY JESSILYN FORIGO

W

hen it comes to building

your wedding day dream team the offerings of the wedding professionals you’re trying to procure can sometimes be unclear. Here’s a primer on who’s who in the world of weddings.

196

CONFETTIMAGAZINE.CA

Wedding designers are dedicated exclusively to achieving the visual aspect of your day. They’ll work with you to understand your aesthetic, create a design concept, provide detailed floorplans for décor placement and can help you source all of the décor elements, floral suppliers and print experts to ensure your wedding looks exactly as you’ve envisioned, only better! A wedding designer is the perfect fit for you if you’ve got great organizational skills but aren’t the most artistically creative.

Wedding Planners endeavour to make your planning experience as seamless as possible. They manage logistics, budgets, timelines and vendor bookings, using their experience and relationships to negotiate on your behalf. They’ll likely attend most meetings with your vendors, and will participate in venue site visits. Planners walk you through your ideal wedding day, moment by moment and then craft the plan to make it a reality. Many are also involved in the design of the wedding, creating the design plan and then sourcing all of the design elements as well as managing all of the day of production. Basically, they’re your wedding one-stop shop. A wedding planner is what you’re after if you want the planning process to be as stress free as possible and you’d feel most comfortable collaborating with an expert on creation of your perfect day.

Wedding Coordinators manage the timeline and logistics of the wedding day itself; the less shiny but undeniably mission critical production points that make each moment work. While they aren’t part of the earlier planning they’ll usually get involved about one month out to confirm that all orders are confirmed, timelines are created and vendors know where to be. They’ll coordinate all deliveries and load in, set up and load out of your décor on the day and will act as the central point of contact for all of your other vendors. A wedding coordinator is your wish come true if you’ve got the vision and the organizational skills but just need someone to trust with execution while you enjoy your day. No matter what level of support you choose you’ll be happy to have expert assistance to compliment you in the areas you are least confident. British Columbia “Elena and Vasili’s mountain top wedding at Kicking Horse Resort in Golden, BC was nothing short of amazing! Blue skies, smoky mountain peaks, spectacular lodge and, of course, a crowd of partying Russian wedding guests! We started the day by taking a gondola ride to the very top of Kicking Horse Resort to the Eagle Eye restaurant where Elena got ready. This was followed by a sunny, blue sky ceremony on the mountain top. The reception was filled with games and Russian traditions that had the guests laughing, dancing and drinking well before the sun was even down!” – Brendan Nogue, Photographer

It was so much fun for both those swimming and those watching. Best Advice we received... being told to stop planning, trust your planner, and to start enjoying! We had been in the weeds planning for months (over a year) and we did not know when to ‘turn it off’. Lynn called us the week before and said, “it’s time to let go – no more changes, no more worries.” From that moment on we entrusted Lynn and her team to make decisions on our behalf and we had the best weekend of our lives!” - David & Matthew PHOTOGRAPHER

REAL WEDDING

Rocky Mountains When people hear you're having a wedding in February, their typical reply is, "Oh, it must be a destination wedding." Canmore is a short destination away from our home in Calgary, but a destination we love. The stunning snowy mountains transport us to a different world, the brisk air made us cuddle extra tight and the romantic and soft feel of Cornerstone Theatre warmed our bodies and hearts. It's hard to pick one moment as our favourite. Everything from the first look, to freezing outside, and then dancing the night away with our friends and family was absolute perfection. It is a day we both will never forget and far surpassed our wildest dreams. – Hannah, Bride

ALEXA SCO T T DECEMBER 31, 2017

REAL WEDDING

Rocky Mountains "2017 is a year Alexa & Scott will never forget as it started out jam packed with milestones and celebrations. New Year’s Eve is their favorite holiday, it’s Alexa’s birthday and it is now the day of their wedding anniversary. It was a fabulous party surrounded by family and friends despite it being one of the coldest days of the winter. Alexa and Scott braved minus 33 Celsius (ouch!) to capture their winter wonderland wedding portraits in the Banff National Park. Scott and his groomsmen wore Scottish dress kilts and true to tradition, there was no underwear—thermal or otherwise. Talk about macho! – Shirleen Burnett, Photographer

Rocky Mountains "Michelle & Chris are avid skiers and big mountain lovers. Their wedding reflected that in every detail. When Michelle contacted us about capturing her wedding the conversation quickly turned to all the exciting wedding portraits we could create at the top of the Lake Louise Ski Resort. By the end of our conversation we were shaking with anticipation. Her wedding day didn’t disappoint. It was a perfect sunny, blue sky day and an epic adrenaline packed adventure. Michelle was a sight to see, ripping down double black diamond runs in her wedding gown with her tuxedo clad husband fast behind." – Shirleen Burnett, Photographer

Our first favorite moment was when we shared our personal vows overlooking the stunning views of the Canadian Rockies behind us. We all couldn’t help but shed tears. Our second had to be our gender reveal wedding cake. We sent the hotel our sealed test results before we arrived. When we cut into our wedding cake, the icing was blue. Rocky Mountains "Sarah and Andrew’s wedding day was set against the organic backdrop of the Rocky Mountains and the Fairmont Jasper Park Lodge, a place near and dear to both families, it has hosted them many adventures over the years. To ensure the most authentic wedding experience, the Cory Christopher Design team infused personal elements including a small museum of childhood artifacts and natural elements into their reception. Collections of furniture and trunks ensured an intimate, comfortable, and family inspired cabin feel. REAL WEDDING

Rocky Mountains "Sean and Marlies met when they both attended a University of Lethbridge Ski Trip in Whitefish. It was so suiting that they met on an adventurous trip as these two are adventurous souls and love to travel. The easiest decision they made on their wedding day was to get married in Canmore as they love going to the mountains to hike and explore and they love the serenity and the peacefulness that the mountains have to offer. They got married at the foot of the rocky mountains and their ceremony was emotional and had some laughs in it and Marlies has an infectious giggle and laugh so it made those candid times extra special."– Monica, Photographer

TINA K EEGAN JULY 21ST 2018

REAL WEDDING

Rocky Mountains "Our wedding was everything we ever imagined our special day would be. It was surreal to have our closest friends and family there to witness us exchange our vows in the beautiful town of Canmore, Alberta. It was the perfect day, from laughter to tears at the ceremony to the night filled with love and energy at the reception. One of the most memorable moments of the day was when Keegan’s best man (and best friend) surprised him by dressing up in Keegan’s aunties dress for the first look photos. Not only did we get amazing photos from it but it was a perfect way to calm our nerves early on in the day. The day wouldn’t have been as amazing as it was without our wedding planner, Lisa LaPlante, who helped us not only plan the event for over a year but helped keep us sane and calm, and made the day flawless." – Tina and Keegan PHOTOGRAPHER

FEATURE WEDDING

Edmonton

“Tana and Josiah’s proposal story is full of surprises. After taking quick possession on a home, and trying to pack up before a fast move, Josiah convinced Tana to go on a quick trip to Panorama. Reluctant to go at first, Tana had no idea what was in store for her. Josiah took her for a romantic hike where he planned to propose. Nerves getting the better of him, he had to convince her to go on a second hike so he could pop the question! One of the most cherished moment for Tana and Josiah was sharing their first dance performed live by their brother-in-laws.”

"For Emily-Anne and Jen their lives have taken them across this vast and unforgettable country and it seemed fitting that they should culminate in Alberta. Their intimate gathering of family and friends started with a circular ceremony, a symbolic reminder of how connected their lives have become. Their rustic head table was placed in the middle of the space continuing the circle of family and friends. The overall design balanced the rustic nature of the Old Timers Cabin with softer more elegant components including suspended draping and natural tablecloths. Their wedding cake featured colourful layers echoing the pride flag." -Cory Christopher, Designer

"Connor and Daria really truly live life to the fullest! They find fun and excitement is everything they do... and that included wedding planning. Their wedding was to be the place where all of their loved ones would gather to celebrate life's greatest gifts; FAMILY and LOVE. The laughs were abundant, the tradition was stoic, the heartfelt toasts sang to the heavens, and they danced the night away into the wee hours of the morning. Family members were a part of each step in the day. From hair and makeup, to the cake, to vintage getaway cars and even the band. One thing we will never forget was the extreme cold temperatures (mostly during photos). We will always look back on that and smile and always know those little hidden stories behind every photo (the Sheraton patio photo looks so romantic and I should have been saying sweet nothings–but what I really was saying was "this better be a worthwhile photo because I can't feel my fingers.") So many good moments, sharing some kind words and laughs with my Grandma who I never see, having an emotional dance with my mom. So many moments that we don't ever get the opportunity experience day-to-day. Memories for a lifetime. Scarfing down bar food minutes before the ceremony so I wouldn't pass out... "We were so lucky and grateful to be surrounded by our family and friends as we committed to spending our life together. The entire day was filled with love but the most special moment by far was the first time we saw each other. Both of us have always enjoyed a strong sense of tradition, so we opted out of the first look, instead, seeing each other for the first time down the aisle from one another. It was a moment we will always remember, both of us being overcome with strong emotions of love as our eyes locked – it truly felt like it was just the two of us in the room. Staying with the traditional theme throughout the wedding with the guiding hand of LFW we chose classic and elegant décor within a neutral color palate. We are so appreciative to have such an amazing wedding; it’s a day we will both hold on to forever. – Amanda & Jefferson

After heading to Stephen Avenue downtown for formal photos with the bridal party, we came back to the venue to find the most incredible reception room setup. Our jaws hit the floor as we viewed the gorgeous space where the bride and groom would enjoy dinner and dancing with their family and friends. A couple favourite moments of the day included the bride and groom stopping at Local 8th Avenue pub to have a drink during their photo session and also during the reception when the bride's Mom was given a special birthday dessert with a candle and all the wedding guests sang her Happy Birthday!" – Erin Shepley, Photographer

REAL WEDDING

"The excitement of getting engaged can sometimes turn to anxiety when you begin to look at the long to do list ahead of you and your fiancé. I would have to say that my fiancé and I did enjoy the planning process. We did not feel stressed or overwhelmed, everything seemed to fall together perfectly. If you select the right vendors it doesn't seem like work at all and more of a constant celebration of the big event to come. I thoroughly enjoyed meeting with my vendors and making all the decisions and talking details. It is true what you hear that your wedding day is the best day of your life. It truly was the best day ever getting to celebrate our love with our family and friends. The smiles, laughter, love and memories will last forever. Thank you to all our vendors for making this possible."– Melissa & Jason

"They say the best relationships start out as friendships and since our wedding is just a huge party dedicated to our close family & friends, we wanted to incorporate the friendship theme throughout our big day and support local businesses – My sister designed our watercolor invitations (along with menu and place cards) with custom calligraphy, and we asked various friends to take on roles such as a baker (for the cake and cupcakes), singer (and guitarist for the ceremony), florist (for the hanging floral arch and floral wreaths around the chandeliers at our venue), ring bearer (our puppy!) and even having Marc’s childhood neighbour officiate our wedding!"– Jennifer, Bride

"Kyle and I LOVE anything and everything vintage (1940's-1960's) and wanted a venue which could reflect that class and elegance of "Old Hollywood". The venue that captured our dream was The Fairmont Palliser Calgary! We were able to keep with the theme of "Vintage Hollywood" by putting the bridesmaids in beautiful burgundy dresses with vintage hair and makeup, and the groomsmen in classic black suits. Kyle wore a custom tuxedo from Henry Rosen which included a pinup girl lining that I adored! Overall our wedding was exactly as we had pictured it, and we felt like we were in an old Hollywood romance." – Sammy, Bride

"Our wedding day truly felt like a representation of who we are as a couple- we were surrounded by all of our favourite people, we got to eat all of our favourite desserts, and we were able to include all of the religious and cultural ceremonies that are so important to us and our families. As a couple, laughter played a big role in bringing us together and has enriched our relationship ever since, so the speeches were the most memorable part of our wedding day- they were hilarious and meaningful and reminded us how lucky we are to have such funny, joyful, and thoughtful people in our corner."– Soraya & Zain

"Our favorite moment was when we first saw each other at the Hindu wedding; we could not stop grinning at each other. We were completely oblivious to all the other wedding commotion happening around us. We had epic levels of fun during our first dance. We had choreographed a special number to the song "You Give Me Something" by Jamiroquai, which incorporated plenty of twirls to show off my layered lehenga skirt. It was such an upbeat way to open up the dance floor for the evening." – Bride

SAM PAUL FEBRUARY 10, 2018

REAL WEDDING

Muskoka, Ontario The lovely Muskoka Valley, with its picturesque lakes and cottages, has been the summertime playground of newlywed Sam since she was a little girl. On Feb. 10th, the quaint town of Huntsville became even more special in Sam’s heart being the place she said “I do” to the love of her life, Paul. He's from Chennai, India and spent much of his life living abroad. While a rolling stone may gather no moss, Paul’s giant, contagious smile has gathered a dedicated posse of beloved friends from all over the world —14 different countries to be exact!—who made the long journey to celebrate their love. The young couple braved a winter storm to capture their wedding portraits outdoors. Teeth chattering, Paul learned that a winter wedding in Canada is a long way from the heat of his home town, Chennai! – Shirleen Burnett - Photographer PHOTOGRAPHER VIDEOGRAPHER VENUE
