CORY CHRISTOPHER Floral Design & Decor - Cory Christopher Many have seen Cory on Breakfast Television, CTV Edmonton, and in the Edmonton Journal. Cory Christopher and his creative design team infuse creativity and passion into every event they design and plan. Cory is a supporter of the arts and its powerful ability to engage a community to grow and change. He strives to provide opportunities to inspire, teach and share his passion and love for art, design and living. “Luxury is about a feeling, an experience that is elevated to another level of beauty and detail. It should not be confused with a need to spend money. It is about quality over quantity. For a luxurious wedding day you want each guest to feel like you have wrapped them up in a beautiful piece of cashmere. Its that feeling of “specialness” which honestly breeds luxury for your special day.”

LOWELL WILLIAMS Menswear Specialist - Ed Williams Mens Wear Lowell has been around the clothing business for as long as he can remember. As soon as he was old enough to collect allowance, nearly every penny of it went into buying clothes, and not much has changed since then. As you might have guessed, Lowell is Ed William’s son, and he shares his father’s enthusiasm for fashion and retail. He hopes to pass on his father’s legacy to his own two young sons through the same regiment of child labour. “To me luxury is anything that feels special. It can be a moment with a loved one, a beautiful fragrance, or in the case of men’s clothing, a garment that has a great feel to it and fits you in a way that you can’t help but feel good while wearing it. I don’t think that luxury necessarily has to mean expensive.”

ANDRAS SCHRAM Photographer - Andras Schram Photography Andras has been photographing weddings for over 13 years and remembers every single one of them. Andras describes his style as “sensitive and spontaneous” and considers himself a documentary photographer more than anything else. His inspiration comes from the people he meets and their life stories, and his goal is to document those untold stories in a way that generations can see them for years to come. "A great picture can be very simple but it can be very complex, no matter which happens at that moment you have to choose the best option on the spot, give your full attention, become one with your subject, and create something incredible... A wedding picture is a result of incredible team work; hair and makeup, wedding planning, flowers and design, the couple and their friends, and a good photographer to capture it the right way...Luxury is not monetary for me. It’s a compliment, an honest smile, a touch, a good talk, and some caring words.”

TAMARA JONES Marriage Commissioner - Weddings by Tamara Tamara Jones is an Alberta Appointed Marriage Commissioner serving the City of Calgary and surrounding areas. She has performed over 2000 Marriage Ceremonies in the past nine years and is truly passionate about what she does. Tamara feels it is important that her clients enjoy their marriage ceremony by providing unique and customized marriage ceremonies with exceptional customer service. “There is an energy about it, a feeling, you are in compete awe. Breathtaking, flawless, leaving you feeling overwhelmed by your senses. It is a sense of confidence and readiness. Every detail is taken care of so the couple can “be”, enjoy and live in that moment with no hesitation. To express their love in the presence of their family and friends surrounded by perfection. It is like being wrapped up in a cashmere blanket on a cold winter day, in front of the fireplace with a great glass of wine. Not a concern for anything, no stress, surrounded by your favourite people. Just living and being grateful, that is luxury.”

2016 BRIDAL FASHION

The 2015 bridal runways are wrapping up. From refreshing new necklines, to 3D embellishments, every new season presents a variety of exciting new fashion trends for brides to play with. Off-the-shoulder necklines, bold colours, tulle over-skirts, capes and collars have infused many of the designers' collections recently, and we expect these trends to hold fast into 2016. Every season at Luxe by Calgary Bride we are fortunate enough to interview industry experts from all aspects of bridal fashion. In the following pages we are proud to bring you the latest in runway fashion trends.

DRAMATIC NECKLINES While bateau necklines are still popular moving into 2016, deep V-neck bodices, as well as one-shoulder and off-the-shoulder varieties are also making a dramatic appearance on bridal runways.

ILLUSION OVERLAYS Structured and figure flattering bodices with ultra-sheer overlays are at the height of fashion. Sheer fabrics with lavish floral or beaded appliqué are flattering while offering subtle coverage.

FINE DETAILING Three-dimensional floral appliqués are becoming the new norm, adding dimension and texture to traditional bridal detailing. Laser-cut appliqués and tiny, sparkling beads add a modern, couture feel to ready-to-wear gowns.

WEARABLE BLOOMS No longer are flowers reserved only for bouquets and tables. Today’s brides and top designers are embracing fresh floral headpieces, shoulder pieces, belts, shoes and gown adornment as part of their overall styling in bridal ensembles.

SEXY BACKS Dresses with elegantly designed backs are taking the runway by storm, embellishing and enhancing the female silhouette. Your back will be a focal point as you walk down the aisle and during your first dance, and incorporating detail will intensify the impact of your gown.

RECEPTION GOWNS Now trending in North America is the bride’s reception gown. Within the next year, it is predicted that there will be a substantial increase in the number of brides who choose to change into a special occasion gown, or remove their train just before the reception. Reception dresses generally boast bold designs, lavish decoration, and are often brightly coloured evening gowns.

VICTORIAN TOUCHES Bustles and tiered layers of tulle have made a resurgence, taking inspiration from the 18th century polonaise. Uneven, alternating layers of various fabrics create texture, fullness and movement.

“ My definition of luxury is exquisite fabrics and high quality craftsmanship... Luxury is also something that is not easily attainable. Knowing that not everyone has it allows items or experiences to feel more ‘luxurious’ than others.” – Daria Groch-Arnold, Owner of Cameo & Cufflinks

The Art of

Couture

By Catherine Hazin

Couture fashion is for the conscious dresser, a person who dresses on purpose, and for whom a hand stitched seam is an intimate connection between the creator and the wearer. Couture is not just for wedding dresses and evening gowns; it is for anyone who sees textiles as art and a vehicle for creative self expression.

“Art must be an expression of love, or it is nothing.”

A

piece of true couture is a textile treasure with a timeless style. For many

women a wedding dress is a special opportunity to own such a treasure. Couture gowns are often passed down and worn generationally as a result of their enduring beauty, each time a story of adventure and love retold. A wedding gown tells a story of romance and luxury and over time develops a history of its own. The word “couture” refers to the creation of exclusive custom-fitted clothing, while “haute couture”, (a French phrase for “high fashion”), implies unparalleled artistry with the fashioning of handmade garments. Couture designers create exclusive fashion from fine fabrics, delicate embroidery, jewelled details and hand sewing techniques. Through painstaking methods of cutting and fitting to the client's body, the goal of any couture design house is a perfect fit. The manual labour needed to produce a garment this way can take between 100 - 150 hours for bespoke suit, and up to 1000 hours for an embellished haute couture wedding dress. Because of the accuracy of the cutting and seam-work, haute couture dresses are designed for one wearer. They are difficult to adjust, and if passed on must be re-fitted to the new wearer or completely disassembled and re-sewn to the new specifications. A couture designer knows that his or her masterpiece will be judged not only for its style and beauty, but for the quality of sewing in its fabrication. A connoisseur of fine couture will recognize a factory stitch or fabric from a mile away. The fabrics available to a couture house, or designer, are very luxurious and include the latest novelty fabrics and expensive silks, fine wools, cashmeres, cottons, linens, leather, suede, skins or furs. In the case of a reputable design house, the design and colour of a fabric may be exclusively reserved; meaning no one else can produce exactly the same hue.

“Fashion is not something that exists in dresses only. Fashion is in the sky, in the street, fashion has to do with ideas, the way we live, what is happening. - Coco Chanel, French fashion designer

Modern brides are telling a story about confidence and originality with their fashion choices. The contemporary bride is looking for a gown that is perfect for her, while equally important are the accessories and statement pieces that complete her unique and personal style.

Gown

or most women, a wedding gown is the fashion investment of a lifetime, and may even

be the most expensive dress she will ever own. There are many important things to consider when looking for your gown that go way beyond the latest trends and styles. In the world of designer fashion, and wedding gowns in particular, fabrics are chosen for more than just aesthetic reasons. They are also chosen according to functionality as the fabric supports the style, fit and structure of the gown. A quality wedding gown will also use fine quality fabrics in their linings, and boning under the top layers of the bodice for added structure. “Many times girls will want to try on more expensive dresses and convince themselves they are trying on the dress to see what the 'style' looks like on them. What few people realize is that the style is achieved due to the fabrics and construction, they will not find the same fit and style with a 'knock-off' or cheaper version." - Daria Groch Arnold, Cameo & Cufflinks Look to the following pages and you will find in the credits Calgary’s finest bridal fashion boutiques, carrying the newest and most prized ready-to-wear fashions from the runways.

Designers like Monique Lhuillier, Amsale and Jim Hjelm are making it fashionable to slip out of your long skirt after the ceremony, and dawn a sexy cocktail version of your dress for the after party. COLOUR & PATTERN Coloured wedding dresses in stone washed shades have a stronger presence than ever on the runways, and the hues are much deeper and darker than before. Blush, silver and lilac are three popular choices among top bridal fashion designers for 2016. Delicate floral and geometric prints are one of the most dramatic new trends this year and are taking runways by storm, combined with layers of softly coloured fabrics.

2016 BRIDESMAIDS

A new day has dawned in bridesmaid’s fashion. Today’s bridesmaid fashions are as unique and individual as the women wearing them. Friendships are celebrated in a combination of colors, unified by the style choices emanating from the bride. Trends toward mismatching bridesmaids ensembles continues to grow, with some brides opting to work with as many as two to five different shades in their wedding palette. However, there are still plenty of options for those who prefer more consistency to their bridal party’s overall look. From the overarching trend of intricate geometric lace and artistic embroideries, to fluted hems and innovative sleeve shapes, the runways in New York City are inspiring bridal party’s fashions worldwide. Dressing your friends in different shades and hues that are within the same tone is a great way to celebrate individuality while staying within

a cohesive theme. Still popular amongst many designers is a tendency toward classicism and pure Greek lines, giving a striking statuesque effect to photographs. Beautiful soft designs like these can be found at bridal fashion boutiques like Frocks Modern Bridesmaids, who specialize in beautiful modern bridesmaid’s attire. For bridesmaids with fuller figures, the crew neckline is bra-friendly and the defined waist is an easy fit for many body types. You will find an ocean of styles, trend setting colours, and designer labels at local fashion houses like Cameo and Cufflinks, The Bridal Boutique, and Durand Bridal. Because peoples body shapes differ, and so do comfort levels, it’s important to honor your friend’s style, as well as your own. After all, it was those unique qualities that drew you together as friends in the first place, so why not celebrate that? Many of today’s top dress manufacturers make it easy to coordinate different styles by offering bridesmaids’ collections that are varied, yet also work together as striking mismatched collections. If you are going for a mismatched bridesmaid’s ensemble, it’s important to have at least one common element that unites the group in pictures. DESIGNER Designers often have distinct “lines”, fabrics, and embellishments that help unify their signature look. Even if you choose different styles, having the same designer will do most of the work for you in creating a cohesive collection.

INTENSITY If you can’t decide on one color, why not have 3? The trick is in the intensity. Keeping the intensity the same will unify your look, while allowing you to utilize as many colors as you like. A

B

STYLE VS. DETAIL If the dresses are all different styles and colors, find a way to incorporate the same detailing. Details can often be added after the dress is made. Similar dress details have the ability to tie very different looks together. This is the opposite approach to the option above. If you wish to have all the same style and colour of dress, and are looking for a way to capture the individual personality of your bridesmaids, try mixing up the details.

TONE VS. SHADE Dressing your friends in various shades and colours that are within the same tone is a great way to celebrate individuality while staying within a cohesive theme.

THE COST FACTOR Designer patterns generally cost more because they are more difficult to construct and take more time to create. An expertly designed pattern will include time consuming techniques like pleating and hand-tucking. After a series of revisions and critiques, often these dresses are fitted on a model and debuted on a runway before going into production. All fabrics are not created equal, and quality materials cost more. Chiffon, for example, can be made from either polyester or silk. The same goes for tulle and lace, some variations will be pricier depending on quality, and how and where it was constructed. Depending on the designer, some dresses are made to order. This means that the dress is literally made to your measurements similar to a tailored suit. They are all sewn at the same time, and the fabric is all cut from the same dye lot for an identical colour.

THE MODERN MAN BY CATHERINE HAZIN

Considered the most important item in a man’s wardrobe, the suit has been the staple in masculine dress for the better part of a century. If chosen wisely, the suit a man wears to his wedding could become the most worn item he will ever own. Whether you see your wedding suit as a onetime fashion statement or a lifetime investment, it would be wise to take the decision seriously. A bespoke, or made-to-measure, suit is an investment that a man will cherish for his entire life.

STYLE GUIDE THE RULES Formal dressing is entirely about confidence and elegance. With suits and tuxedos alike, a perfect fit is your top priority. Everything else is secondary. When trying to achieve a sophisticated look, your best bet is to go by the book and follow the hard and fast rules of men’s formal dress.

1. Always button the top, sometimes the middle, but never the bottom button on your jacket.

2. It looks best when there is only about ¼ inch of your shirt cuff showing when your arms are relaxed by your sides.

3. The bottom of your jacket should touch your thigh one inch above your knuckles when your hands and arms are at rest by your sides.

4. Typically, a pant leg will only have a slight break if any, with the hem hitting the shoe-lace.

5. The seam on a well fitting jacket ends where his shoulder does. If it’s too tight there will be a bump in the seam. If it’s too loose it will sink into his arm.

6. Bowties are back.

MADE-TO-MEASURE You have two choices when it comes to your wedding attire: an offthe-rack suit, or a made-to-measure suit. An off-the-rack suit is typically purchased and then tailored in store by a team of expert tailors over the course of several weeks. A made-to-measure suit is built to a man’s exact body measurements. In this case, a custom pattern is created, and there is an ocean of possibilities when it comes to fabrics, cuts, embellishments, and fine details. A made-to-measure suit will typically take two to three months to be constructed at the factory and shipped to the store of your choice. Most grooms typically require 2 fittings whether it is off-the-rack or made-to-measure, and this may take some additional time. Regardless of which type of suit you choose, you will need to begin your search six months in advance of your wedding date to find what you want. For many grooms, the difference between a rented suit and a purchased suit can not only be seen, but also felt, and this is obvious by the confidence they exude while wearing it. If it is comfortable and well made, a man’s wedding suit can last him up to 10 years, and will likely need only slight alterations from time to time. It is one of the best investments a man can make. For an expert fit, exceptional service, and a killer cappuccino, be sure to make your first stop Ed Williams Mens Wear for a professional fitting. While you are there, have a look at the season’s hottest new trends and designer lines in men’s fashion. There is a reason why their customers have remained loyal to them for 30 years, now it’s your turn to find out.

ACCESSORIES Well chosen accessories impart confidence and sophistication. Formal, trendy, casual, or contemporary, anything worn with soul and conviction is in vogue in 2016. Opinions vary, so there are no hard and fast rules when it comes to choosing your style. Accessories are a great way to express yourself without compromising the style of your best suit. Brightly coloured socks, belts, and pocket squares are a great way to have some fun with your look, while shoes, cufflinks and bow ties are other examples of ways to express yourself. Symbols such as favourite animals as emblems are a great way to introduce more of your personality into your dress. If chosen with thoughtfulness these accessories can bring you years of enjoyment.

The Art of

TIME MEASUREMENT BY CATHERINE HAZIN

T

imepieces are complex feats of micro-machinery and engineering. They

are designed with faces that resemble the engines of high-performance racing cars and named after famous horse racing tracks. Collectors of these types of timepieces pay special attention to watches worn by the Astronauts of Apollo 11, or wrist instruments taken by deep sea divers to the depths of the ocean. A watch is widely considered to be the most important, and sometimes the only, accessory that men prize. For those who take them seriously, a man’s timepiece often becomes part of his identity; it is a symbol that represents his values and lifestyle. It’s a common belief that the watch a man wears speaks volumes about his character. As Actor Tamer Hassan once said, “I always judge a man by his shoes and his watch”. This is a sentiment based on an old adage that still rings truth for many people. The art of Swiss watch making is still extremely respected in the watch industry, and Calgary Jewellery is well known for their vast selection of quality Swiss made timepieces. According to Calgary Jewellery Marketing Director, Abby Dickinson, there are three important things to consider when buying a watch; quality, functionality and style. Timepieces are accessories that are valued far beyond their aesthetic appeal. “While timepiece trends do evolve, there is always the aspect of timeless elegance and longevity versus what is in style at the moment”, says Abby. Functionality can be simple, such as: a date function, luminescent hands or a scratch resistant glass. It can also be much more complicated with the inclusion of chronographs, extreme water resistance, GPS, or even have a heart rate monitor. Some watches incorporating GPS receivers use them not only to determine position; they also receive and use time signals from satellites making them perfectly accurate timekeepers over long periods of time.

“The beauty of luxury timepieces is that there are many movements and complications available such as tourbillions, minute repeaters, perpetual calendars, dual time zones, moon phases, alarms and chronographs to name a few.”- Abby Dickinson, Calgary Jewellery Watch lovers are connoisseurs of new time keeping designs and innovative movements. The movement, or calibre, is the engine of the watch. This internal mechanism moves the hands and powers any complications, such as: a chronograph, annual calendar or a dual time zone. It’s the device inside that keeps the hands moving so you know whether it’s time to work, eat or sleep. The two most common movements are quartz and automatic. Most inexpensive and medium-priced watches, used mainly for timekeeping, are electronic watches with quartz movements. Expensive collectible watches are valued more for their elaborate craftsmanship, aesthetic appeal and glamorous design. These often have purely mechanical movements and are powered by springs. “Designer brands like Breguet, Blancpain, Zenith, and Ulysse Nardin are well known for their exceptional attention to detail, complications and the overall craftsmanship." according to Abby, “Each timepiece is hand assembled by master watchmakers in Switzerland.” With all this in mind, and considering that a luxury watch is an investment that must stand the test of time, it would be wise to do your shopping in person as opposed to online. In this way you can receive the personal service and attention you deserve. There is also added security for those willing to take the time to shop in-store, as all watches purchased in person through Calgary Jewellery come with a warranty from the manufacturer.

Jewellery is an art form like any other, yet it has always held an intrinsic value that makes it unique. In the past, the importance of a piece of jewellery has been proportionate to its market value, rarity and origin. Contemporary jewellery, by contrast, is valued for the statement it makes about its designer or wearer. Statement jewellery today speaks to a wearer’s sense of self, rather than to the standard definition of what is prized at the time. A new category of accessories has thus been born, where the artistic quality and design are more important than its intrinsic value.

Coloured gemstones have intriguing stories attached, and if chosen wisely can be even more valuable than the traditional diamond. Each gemstone is as unique as its story of formation, and collecting them together is a fun and rewarding experience. When shopping for unique stones, always ask to see them through a “loop” (jewellers’ magnifying lens) against a white or grey background, and again in natural light. Look for inclusions, as these will affect the structural integrity or the clarity of the stone. Take note of the quality and precision of the cut.

If custom jewellery design is something you would like to explore, we recommend that you begin to look for your designer at least six months in advance. Most reputable goldsmiths have a long appointment list and will rarely rush a custom job. Gemstones are nature’s artwork, polished by man’s imagination. Every gem is unique and its story of formation is dependent on a chance collision of the elements or other environmental forces. To own a perfectly hand cut gemstone is to own something inherently valuable. It is the collaborative art work of nature and man combined.

Pearl Culturee

JEWELLERY: CALGARY JEWELLERY SHOWN ABOVE: HIGH LUSTRE, SEMI-BAROQUE FRESHWATER PEARL

Long known as the “queen of gems”, pearls possess a history and allure far beyond what today’s wearer may recognize. Throughout much of recoded history, a natural pearl necklace comprised of matched spheres was a treasure of almost incomparable value. It’s shimmering lustre and iridescent glow have made pearls the most sought after gemstone in the world. Before the creation of cultured pearls in the early 1900’s, natural pearls were so rare and expensive that they were reserved exclusively for the noble and very rich. Not anymore. Still a timeless testament to feminine refinement and elegance, pearls are now affordable enough for all to cherish and own. From the innermost part of an ordinary oyster, a tiny secretion of calcium carbonate grows and hopefully forms into a perfectly cylindrical and dynamic-coloured pearl. It can take two to five years to create this completely organic south sea gemstone. Unlike a diamond, which relies on cutting and polishing to create a faceted gem, pearls are simply rinsed in fresh water to reveal their beauty. Calgary Jewellery carries a variety of pieces for any woman’s taste. A symbol of strength, confidence, class and demureness, a woman in pearls makes a statement.

Can you identify a few makeup trends for 2016? “Trends come and go, we work with our brides on finding their own timeless personal style that reflects them. Are they romantic, modern, or want to simply look fresh and glowing on their big day? From there we then chat about specific trends that might work with their personality.”

In your opinion, why is it important for a bride to hire a professional hair and makeup artist for her wedding day? “Just do it. Factor it into your budget. Spoil yourself. Modern brides are powerful. They are expressive, they are strong, they are passionate, and they own their power. No matter what style or trends

they embrace, the unifying characteristic of modern brides is individuality. In previous generations, brides would take great pains to hide their body art on their wedding day, no matter what it represented or how much it was adored. Nowadays, brides are looking for gowns that show off and accentuate their carefully chosen, and skillfully designed, body art. From full back murals to dainty foot designs, body art is about embracing individuality, and the uniqueness of every bride's personal style. Every tattoo has a special meaning, and speaks of a special time in a person's life. It serves as a visual memory of feelings, passions, truths, battles and victories. As with body art, your wedding dress will become a representation of who you are on that particular day in your life. While your wedding dress can't be worn permanently as body art can, it will become a perennial reflection of you, through photographs and memories.

“Documentary storytelling for us means artfully capturing the subtle stories of the wedding day as they unfold, completely unscripted or directed by us. This allows the bride and groom to truly experience the magic of their wedding day, as opposed to feeling like their wedding day is a photo shoot. It's the subtle unobvious stories that make ones wedding their wedding. Almost every wedding has a first kiss, a first dance, a father walking the daughter down the aisle, a cake cutting, etc. These are important moments to capture, but it's the subtle moments; the way he looks at her, the way she touches his hand, the kids, the grandparents, the unpredictable, and the hilarious... that's what defines your wedding day. - Erika and Lanny Mann, Two Mann Studios

“ Photography takes an instant out of time, altering life by holding it still.” - D orethea Lange, American documentary photographer and photojournalist

W

edding photography is a fast-paced and high-stress form of photography that offers very few

second chances; if a shot is missed a photographer does not get to rebuild the scene and try again. For this reason, diligence in researching a reputable wedding photographer is an essential part of the wedding planning process. But there is more than a photographers reputation to consider when it comes to making the right selection for your wedding day; it is also important to consider photographic style. Most wedding photographers employ a combination of documentary and fine art styles when producing wedding photos. In an effort to clarify a sometimes grey area, we have done a little research to help you determine which style speaks to you as a couple. Wedding photographers are hired to document not only the wedding ceremony and reception, but also the many critical moments leading up to the ceremony. Regardless of the photographic style or subject matter of the photo, photographers must capture the image clearly, and quickly. Be sure to take the time to research your options carefully by reviewing and comparing portfolios and testimonials.

FINE ART PHOTOGRAPHY Fine Art Photography is aesthetic, and is distinguished from scientific, commercial, or journalistic photography because it is aimed at something more than a realistic rendering of the subject. Fine art photography is done to express and share the photographer’s perceptions and emotions, and is designed to fulfill his or her creative vision. Dr S. D. Jouhar, Chairman of the Photographic Fine Art Association, defined “Fine Art” as “creating images that evoke emotion by a photographic process in which one's mind and imagination are freely but competently exercised.” Fine art photography attempts to convey a personal impression that stands in contrast to representational photography, such as photojournalism.

DOCUMENTARY VS. PHOTOJOURNALISM Photojournalism and documentary photography are identical mediums that send different messages. They both concern themselves with “who”, “where”, “when” and occasionally “how”. They also both ask us to look at place, time and subject; however it is here that they part company. Although both of these styles involve taking photographs which are objective, honest and informative, photojournalism involves capturing specific events, while documentary photography focuses on ongoing situations. Since it is considered to be based on fact, photojournalistic photography must adhere to very strict editing standards in order to ensure that the public is not mislead. “Photojournalism is a slice of life, un-edited.” – Darlene Young, photographer Documentary photography, on the other hand, identifies place, space, people and time; however unlike photojournalism it asks us to also consider the relationship between them. Documentary photography asks us to stop and consider what is happening, and therefore demands more of our time and intellectual engagement.

FIRST LOOK Another photographic trend that is becoming increasingly popular is a “first look” photo session. These are special opportunities for the bride and groom to spend a few moments together before their wedding ceremony, and have that moment preserved forever. These brief private sessions allow the photographer to capture the intimacy of a couple seeing each other for the first time on their wedding day.

PHOTOGRAPHIC ART & ALBUMS Professional photographers take a great deal of pride not only in their photographic images but also in their creative printing choices and the albums they produce. Photographers have a very close relationship with the finished product and if you allow them the opportunity, they will present you with creative and beautiful options for a wedding album or art piece that will become a cherished keepsake for the rest of your life. CREATIVE DIRECTION Although it is very common in fashion editorial, creative direction is relatively untapped in the wedding photography industry. Having both a photographer and a creative director work together allows the photographer to focus on the technical and interpersonal side of wedding photography while a creative director works with the bride and groom, or bridal party, to develop unique and visionary ideas for the style and setting of the photographs. “Using a creative team offers different perspectives and creative ideas to enhance the wedding photo experience for the bride and groom, allowing them to feel as though they are part of an editorial fashion shoot. As the photographer is working with one idea, the creative director can be preparing the next idea in the storyboard. This creates a more efficient flow throughout the day.” – Alan Maudie, photographer

he goal of a boudoir session is to make a woman feel confident,

beautiful, while capturing her sensuality, and spirit. A professional boudoir photographer should be able to photograph a woman beautifully and with ease. They should also make their subject feel completely comfortable, and safe. Not every wedding photographer does boudoir. A great boudoir photographer has the ability to adjust their practices and coach their subject to bring out a woman’s best qualities. After all, every woman has a different comfort level, and a different idea of what “sexy” means to her. It’s important to do some research and find some inspiration for what you want to do before your scheduled shoot. When looking for inspiration, create a mood board, such as one on Pinterest, and share your inspiration with the photographer in advance. This will help them prepare to capture the right style for you. Don’t expect your photographer to play the part of a stylist, it is not professional to ask them what you should wear. Hire a professional hair and make up artist for your boudoir session. Having someone dedicated to all your details to ensure perfect skin and hair is an essential part of a professional looking photo shoot. Some boudoir photographers will also include a separate engagement photography session as an opportunity to get to know each other and become more comfortable working together. Photographers like Christy D. Swanberg of Hello There Darling Boudoir offer a variety of customized photography experiences, including full day sessions with gifts and a hotel room included!

“I love boudoir photography because it changes the lives of our clients; we let an ordinary person feel like a super star for a day. They come in to the studio, have their hair and makeup done, dress up in a sexy outfit, and we photograph them under professional lights. When we show them the photos they are simply blown away. I have had clients break into tears because they cannot believe that it is actually them looking so beautiful. My job is to find the beauty in every woman and capture that. I explain to them that sometimes we are the most critical of ourselves, but my job is to show my clients the beauty that the rest of the world sees in them. It’s profound to me how after a boudoir session we can clearly see how empowered our clients become. We can see the change in them. It is literally a life changing experience. Most clients say something like ‘this session is a gift for my partner.’ However, after it is all said and done, they know the real gift was for them.” - Perry Thompson, Foxy Boudoir Creativity is an important aspect of boudoir photography, and so are testimonials, but ultimately, the proof is in the portfolio and personality. Be sure to do your research in advance to find the right boudoir photographer for you.

THE POWER OF

The value of lighting cannot be measured by the quantity of light, but rather by the environment it creates, the mood it sets and the vision it enables. Lighting design adds intensity and vibration to a room. It allows you to create texture or change the colour of the walls or landscape. A professional lighting designer will illuminate your Décor and elevate your guest's experience to something extraordinary. Proper lighting will also significantly impact the quality of images that your photographer is able to produce. That lighting designers are technicians or engineers is a common misconception. Lighting Design requires a great deal of creativity and a deep understanding of colour, contrast and value. Like photographers, lighting designers too are artists, and all artists have styles. Putting your lighting designer and photographer in touch with each other could be one of best decisions you make in your wedding planning process. “Lighting creates a mood and emotion. Can you tell us a little about your proposal story? Justin: “I had made plans with a friend for lunch thinking Curtis was at work. My friend came and picked me up, and on our way out the door Curtis called me and asked if I could check the mail box for something. What do you love the most about each other? Curtis: “I love Justin's ambition and passion. He balances me out, reminding me to be spontaneous. He is fun, loving, supportive and inspiring. Most of all, I love how he loves me despite all my flaws and makes me want to be a better man every day.” Justin: “Curtis is the most loving caring man I've ever met. He is genuine and compassionate, and he makes me laugh. He continues to make me fall more in love with him year after year.”

What did getting married mean to you? Curtis: “Getting married was just the icing on the cake. It meant that I accepted myself for who I am, and that I am not ashamed of it despite all the societal and familial pressures. Marriage made our commitment to each other stronger. It meant that we could share our love and relationship with each other, and also the people that mean the world to us.”

We walked out from each end of the room with our moms, and approached each other to meet in the middle where we walked together up to a stage. There wasn't a dry eye in the room. It was such a blur! It was personal and intimate. We wrote our own vows which we shared with each other and with the closest people in our lives. Our ceremony had humor, romance and love. The feelings I had are indescribable.” Justin: “Our ceremony was so us! It was romantic, and styled like a high end event with red carpets and stunning lighting. Our marriage commissioner, Tamara Jones, gave a heartwarming and light ceremony portraying our love for each other. We toasted our friends and family at the end of the ceremony to celebrate our new adventure.”

What were some interesting elements that you added in? Curtis: “We just added elements to our wedding that portrayed us, some traditional, some contemporary. We had a Chinese tea ceremony, and a "kiss for the cause" (instead of clinking of glasses). Anyone could make

“Our ceremony was by far the most significant moment for me. It was incredibly personal, and every detail was perfect. The moment the church doors opened, and I started to walk down the aisle toward Riley, I knew that I was immensely lucky, and that we were embarking on the beginning of a brilliant life together. We wrote our vows for the ceremony, and the process of preparing them together was extraordinarily special, it reinforced how completely committed we are to this journey. We had spent many nights preparing the words we shared in the church that day; we thought about what we wanted to promise and vow to one another. It was a moment that we took very seriously. We have so much love and admiration for each other, and we wanted that love and commitment depicted in our vows, and shared with our loved ones during the ceremony. - Kirsten

“Alaina and Matt love, love, love everything about the Rocky Mountains, and cycling, hiking, and exploring them together. Alaina was thrilled when I told her about Shannon Terrace's amphitheatre in Fish Creek Park (which was like winning the lottery for me!). Their vision was going to be reality, and I was going to be able to capture it just how they had dreamed. Alaina had specific ideas from the décor, to the attire, to the details that would reflect the couple's modern, yet organic style. They choose to have family-styled tables with luxurious greenery, candles and soft lighting, so everyone would focus on each other and enjoy themselves. They had wood accented Décor for signage and stationary to complement the natural palate that was the rest of the wedding design. It was the perfect luxurious summer, rocky mountain inspired wedding, right in the heart of Calgary.” - Christy D. Swanberg, Photographer

“Anybody who knows us knows how crazy we are about our dog. Last summer, like any other day, we went to the dog park and decided to go off our usual route and head to a lookout point by Elbow River. It was there that Rob got down on one knee and asked me to marry him. It was perfect because it was a true reflection of who we are. Nothing over the top - just two people in love walking their dog. From the very beginning, we worked very closely with our Wedding Planner, Sheryl Boury, and right away she knew we wanted to offset some of the venue's rustic charm with pops of golds and pinks, lush flowers and green garlands. With 143 guests, the wedding was by no means small. However, we were able to achieve a very intimate atmosphere. One detail I loved was the personalized menus for every guest, which were designed and created as a gift by one of our best friends.” – Jessica

“Our color scheme was white, black with a hint of dark purple, and lots of sparkle! We wanted a very elegant and fun atmosphere. Our talented planner and designer created an elegant and beautiful reception room in the Crystal Ballroom at the Fairmont Palliser Hotel. We had three variations of centre pieces that included white floral designs, candlelight in mercury glass, and sparkle from draped crystals. We had various black linens, some sparkly as well as silver ͚Art-Deco inspired linens that covered the head and cake table. We also had special lighting throughout the room that created the perfect atmosphere. This wedding was unique as it included many traditional wedding activities, such as the bouquet and garter toss, but included modern twists such as our décor and video booth. It took place in the middle of winter and a snow storm, which allowed for some unique wedding photos and memories.” - Lindsay

Destination

Honeymoon resorts and cruise lines around the world have made it easier and more appealing to wed on-site, making wedding planning virtually stress-free. Many have full-time wedding planners on staff who are familiar with that country's marriage license requirements, and offer wedding packages that take care of all your ceremony essentials like: the photographer, cake, flowers, and marriage commissioner. If you're not getting married at a resort, you can also hire a wedding planner who specializes in destination weddings. Destination weddings are also more affordable than most people realize. For instance, a couple can fly to an all-inclusive resort in Jamaica, get married, and stay for a deluxe week-long honeymoon for a few thousand dollars, including: lodging, meals, drinks, and airfare. Compare that with your average 150-guest wedding ranging from $30,000-$100,000 in Calgary, not to mention a little extra for the honeymoon. A destination wedding can involve just the two of you, a select handful of family and your closest friends, or enough guests to constitute a bona fide week-long reunion. Couples who are getting married for the second, or third, time often choose destination weddings because they're simpler and private. If either or both persons have done a largescale wedding production before, and desire something quieter or less expensive this time around, destination weddings are definitely the right way to go.

SEYCHELLES ISLANDS he isolated Seychelles islands may be one of the world’s best kept secrets, and are the perfect

destination for ecology-minded couples who love nature, and are looking to get away from it all. This archipelago consists of 115 islands, and is located about a thousand miles off the eastern coast of Africa, right in the middle of the Indian Ocean. The islands are scattered over 400,000 square kilometres of the Indian Ocean, and range from granite rock islands with lush vegetation to coral atolls that barely rise out of the sea. These awe inspiring photographs were taken by Photographer Andras Schram, on the island of La Digue, the third-largest inhabited island of the Seychelles in terms of population. It has a population of about 2,000 people, who mostly live in the west coast villages of La Passe and La Réunion. The remote geographical isolation of the islands has had ecological consequences, as much of the Seychelles flora and fauna cannot be found anywhere else on earth. Most visitors are drawn to the scintillating beaches and turquoise waters that dot the sea like an exquisite pearl necklace. The coral atolls are home to giant lagoons that are chock full of marine wildlife, including tens of thousands of giant land tortoises. Aldabra is a UNESCO World Heritage Site that is home to over 150,000 giant land tortoises and happens to be the second largest atoll in the entire world. Aldabra has been billed as one of the wonders of the world by prominent naturalists due to its pristine coral reef ecosystems and is still protected from full-scale tourism. Mahé island, home to the international airport, and the capital city Victoria, is surrounded by coral reefs. It’s powder white sand beaches are optimal for a picture perfect island wedding. These spectacular islands are also a favoured destination of migratory birds who, drawn to the idyllic surroundings and ideal weather, travel thousands of miles to frequent them. With nearly half of the country's land preserved as natural parks, the Seychelles are an ecologists dream. There is no airport on La Digue, so to get there from a foreign country, one has to fly to Victoria and continue by ferry, usually via Praslin. It has an area of 10 km2, which makes it relatively easy to

travel around by bike or on foot.

“Introduced by mutual friends at a dinner party, after a year of chance encounters and small talk Rob asked me out. Our first date was for coffee. Little did Rob know that I didn’t actually drink coffee! I stumbled through, talking nervously as we tried to find common interests and I tried to choke down the coffee. As it turns out, we both shared an interest in motorcycles, a love of the outdoors and travel off the beaten path. The conversation came easy and it was the first of many coffee dates. In 2012 Rob went to Australia to pursue a job offer. We took turns commuting back and forth to make the long distance work. It was on a hot summer morning in Mandurah, WA, that Rob proposed. It was probably too hot for coffee but it had become our morning ritual. Flip-flops and messy hair and tailgating down on the beach with our coffees, we would watch the dolphins and sailboats and chat about life. I think I might have complained that morning ‘Why do we always come to this spot, nothing exciting ever happens’. So he pulled a ring out of his pocket as he talked nervously...and I said yes.” - Rachelle

“I had been checking the weather for about two weeks before our big day - something I swore to myself I wouldn’t do. I remember seeing rain on the forecast, and as much as I convinced myself it will still be beautiful, I couldn’t help but fear wet disappointment. At 6:00am on my wedding day, I awoke to a knock on the door with my sleepy Maid of Honour yelling “IT IS SUNNY AND BEAUTIFUL!” and I smiled, thinking about our loved ones from above who helped make the day perfect. That beauty stayed with us throughout the entire day. Chris and I wanted every guest attending our wedding to feel loved and appreciated, and as I look back, I am incredibly grateful to our planner Stephanie La Grange and her team at Lynn Fletcher Weddings for making that reality and surpassing our expectations. From the majestic mountain scenery to the stunning green garland scattered throughout, to the flow of tears as emotions were displayed, it was constantly breathtaking. “There were so many amazing moments in our wedding day, it's hard to choose just one. But if I had to choose a moment, it would be saying our vows in front of our family and friends. When you marry someone, it's like you get to choose a stranger to be your family, and out of anyone in the world, you choose them. To have everyone I love witness Peter and I become family was truly memorable. It’s one thing to say your vows to your family, but saying your vows out loud in front of family and friends cements your love even further. -Hannah

“Dan and I met in 2011, he had just moved back from Vancouver, and oddly enough, I was in the middle of trying to relocate to Vancouver. Once we met that plan slowly drifted away. Two years later we took a trip to San Francisco. We took another drive to the Golden Gate Bridge where Dan got down on one knee, and ask me if he could be my Prince Charming forever. It was everything I would have hoped for and more. We didn't have any great vision for our wedding, just that we wanted to get together for a fun-filled, sunny, relaxing week in Mexico with our closest friends and family. Dan and I both love the vintage, rockabilly style, so that was our major inspiration for the style of the wedding. The most important piece for us was sharing the day with our family and friends and having our kids be a part of the ceremony.” – Courtney

“We were high school sweethearts; we dated for 11 years before Brandon popped the question. After living together in San Diego, and often visiting a family vacation home in Indio, So-Cal seemed the perfect place for the wedding. Desert Falls Country Club was the perfect backdrop for what we were imagining. With a beautiful patio overlooking the pristine grounds, palm trees in the background, and the sun setting behind them - it looked like a movie backdrop. During the ceremony, we took a moment to thank our families for raising us to be the people that we are today, and make them feel extra loved and extra special on a day that wasn’t just about us, but about everyone we love! “Drew and I met in France for vacation, as I was there working and finally had a week off. We met up at the Paris airport and we took a train to an exquisite hotel in the 6th arrondissement. After three beautiful days had gone by, filled with Laduree pastries and fine foods, we travelled to the Provence countryside and stayed in a stunning country-chic home, surrounded by acres of greenery. As I was getting ready for dinner one night, I noticed Drew pacing outside on our terrace (a common thing he’ll do when something’s on his mind). Drew seemed a little unsettled, and asked me if I wanted to go for a walk on the grounds before dessert came. He took me through the gorgeous gardens and stopped me at the fountain, turned to face me, and started pouring his heart out to me. I knew immediately what was about to happen. Unfortunately, my mind was in shock so I couldn't pick up a word he was saying to me. All I remember is the word ‘solidify’, and then, ‘Will you marry me?’ I took the ring out of his hand and said, “Is this MINE!?...” remembering only then to say ‘yes!’” - Tara

The Jack Singer Concert Hall, located in Arts Commons, is described as one of the most beautiful and acoustically acclaimed venues in North America. Balanced Plate THE ART OF THE

“What I dream of is an art of balance” – Henri Matisse, French artist By Catherine Hazin

If cooking is about eating, then fine cuisine is about tasting and understanding. It stands to reason that if you are in search of the best flavour, you are in fact in search of the best ingredients. When you are looking for the best ingredients, you are in search of the best farming methods. The modern dining experience has more to do with a connection to the ingredients and their sources than it does with exotic foods or expensive taste. Modern luxury dining is about the guest experience, sustainable practices, community and passion.

G

reat cuisine is so much more than just labour intensive food. It is about perfecting basic ingredients and using them in the most innovative, sustainable, and thought provoking way. Executive Chef for Hotel Arts Group, Jan Hansen has modern principals, and prides himself on sustainable practices and the creation of exceptional flavours. Hansen has a culinary philosophy that is based on searching out the finest ingredients and using them to create the best possible dining experience; the balanced plate. “My philosophy comes down to a real marriage of what the final plate is going to look like. My creative outlet comes from making sure it looks and tastes amazing. It is in the balance of the final presentation of colour, textures, plating, and that first perfect bite. At Hotel Arts we take that plate to the next level and turn it into a work of art.” For Chef Hansen, pushing boundaries is where menu creation begins. “Especially when there are high end ingredients involved, I love to take them to the next level,” says Hansen. “Getting super creative with high end ingredients is luxury to me. Expensive ingredients are not everyone’s idea of luxury.” So what constitutes high quality when it comes to basic ingredients? Quality ingredients are essentially farm-raised, ethically raised, indigenous proteins and vegetables. “It is a luxury using ingredients that have been looked after.” Hansen explains. An extraordinary menu is crucial to any wedding’s success. Selecting a seasoned Chef is critical to ensuring your guests experience is memorable. The best place to start is by choosing a venue, and caterer, who are renowned for going above and beyond their clients expectations. “Balance and flow are important in a wedding menu. Not too many options. Seasonal choices are often a sign that the menu is designed frequently.” – Executive Chef Jan Hansen

MIXOLOGY CRAFTING THE PERFECT COCKTAIL By Catherine Hazin

Some people apply colours to a canvas, or compose music, while other people create cocktails. Cocktails have the ability to engage the amygdale, the part of the brain that associates smell with memory and emotion. The connection between what you smell, taste and feel is one of the most powerful tools at a bartender’s disposal. Flowers and scents have the ability to shuttle you into another time and place, using memory as a conduit. The classic definition of a cocktail is a beverage containing three or more ingredients, one of which must be a spirit. Through passion, skill and imagination however, a mixologist can transform a rudimentary drink into a sensory-emotional experience. Mixologists are dedicated to the art, mystery and science of the modern cocktail. Just walking through the door to a proper bar, with a mixologist on site, and one's senses become excited. Today’s mixologists are dedicated to

the science of the modern cocktail. They are focussed on using recently developed techniques equipment and ingredients to manipulate textures and flavours. In this way, they challenge conventional thought and people’s perception of what a cocktail should be. Serving signature drinks at weddings is a simple and sophisticated way to personalize your wedding reception. But why stop at one recipe when you can design an entire drink menu? Design a personalized cocktail menu for your guests incorporating drinks or recipes that you adore. Use fresh herbs, twists and garnishes. Flowers, tender greens, herbs, wood and citrus, everything from elderflower and lavender to lime are all at the disposal of the creative cocktailer. Don’t just serve a drink at your wedding, provide a full-bodied, multi-sensory experience to your guests.

2016 FLORAL ART

Flowers are an important part of your wedding design. They are used symbolically and in bouquets, corsages, centre pieces, aisle and altar decorations, reception decor, and the list goes on. Florals can also be incorporated into headpieces, cakes, and even on your wedding dress. Choosing the appropriate flowers for each unique purpose is an important task.

THE BOUQUET Bouquets come in many shapes, sizes, colors and styles: nosegays, cascading bouquets, pomanders, free form, wired and hand tied varieties. When considering the style and shape of your bouquet it is important to keep in mind the design of your dress and the overall style of your celebration.

PHOTOGRAPHER: f8 PHOTOGRAPHY FLORAL DESIGN: FLEURISH FLOWER SHOP

EXOTIC BLOOMS Exotic flowers can make stunning arrangements and are sure to add drama to your decor. If exotic blooms are a part of your dream, be prepared to pay a little extra since they will likely have to be flown in.

LOCAL FLORA Choosing local botanicals that are grown near where you plan to wed is a lovely way to establish a sense of place. This route is also environmentally conscious, as transporting local flowers leaves less of a carbon footprint.

BRIDESMAIDS BLOSSOMS Bridesmaids can carry smaller matching versions of your bouquet for a consistent and elegant look, or they can contrast in unique and creative color combinations. Small posies of different flower types all in the same color will add interest without complicating your color scheme. PHOTOGRAPHER: KRISTI SNEDDON PHOTOGRAPHER

FLORAL DESIGN: OCCASIONAL BLOOM - THE EVENT FLORIST

Use sturdy blooms, leaves and berries for boutonnieres as there will be a lot of hugging on your wedding day and delicate flowers may not last the night. It would be beneficial to have a few extras on hand, in case some get destroyed.

EMBELLISHMENTS Bouquets can also incorporate beading, satin ribbon and even jewellery! This is a wonderful way to incorporate something borrowed, such as a brooch that may not otherwise fit into your ensemble.

Flowers FOR EVERY SEASON

“Love is the flower you've got to let grow. - John Lennon, English singer/songwriter

SPRING Spring flowers are usually in season from February through April. For springtime weddings, consider pastel coloured botanicals that are the essence of freshness. Think about using blossoms and buds that are just barely opening, and berries that are still ripening in your bouquet. Vibrant greens and delicate yellows, pinks, and purples are typical shades for spring arrangements. Spring bulbs or seedlings make lovely favors, and are a unique gift to thank your guests as they will bloom in commemoration of your wedding year after year. Typical spring blooms include tulips, narcissus, and irises. Other popular choices are anemone, bells of Ireland, Casa Blanca lilies, and delphinium. Be sure to also look into deliciously fragrant flowers such as: lilac, sweet peas, hyacinth, freesia, stephanotis, and peonies.

SUMMER Summer flowers are usually in bloom from May until August, and sometimes September. Nothing says summer like the intense and brightly saturated colors of summer botanicals. The most popular choices for summer blooming flowers are: alstroemeria, chrysanthemum, English lavender, forget-me-not, hydrangea, lisianthus, stephanosis, stock, zinnia, and tuberose. Orchids, birds of paradise, and ginger halcyon are exotic sturdy blooms that will all stand up to the heat of the summer months. Keep a spray bottle on hand to mist your blooms and keep them moist in the heat. PHOTOGRAPHER: K & E PHOTOGRAPHY FLORAL DESIGN: DEE VINE PETALS

FALL Fall flowers are usually in season from September through November. Typical color schemes for fall weddings include shades of chocolate, orange, gold, and deep red. For a unique twist on traditional fall shades, try incorporating blooms in contrasting colors for a striking effect. Late summer flowers and other botanicals like sunflowers, blackeyed Susans, delphinium, and Gerbera daisies, can be combined with other botanicals like wheat and artichokes for an interesting fall effect. Incorporating seedpods and grasses into your arrangements is another unique way to showcase a fall inspired style.

WINTER Winter flowers are normally in season from December until February. If you are wedding in a cold climate, try incorporating berries still on the bush, shapely branches, or evergreens in your floral design. For a winter wedding in a warmer climate, try an abundance of white flowers, which looks dazzling with the added ambiance of candles and white lights. A few examples of flowers that are in season at this time are: amaryllis, anemone, jasmine, ranunculus, star of Bethlehem, and stargazer lilies. Poinsettias, holly and evergreen varieties are traditional, and wreaths of any kind make lovely centerpieces and even gifts.

Sweets CELEBRATORY

Your wedding cake, or other featured confection, is the centre piece of your reception, and as such it should reflect your personal tastes and style as a couple. Think of it as a three-dimensional, edible art piece. With a little imagination and help from a skilled pastry chef your dessert table can become a delectable experience for your guests.

Trends in cake design don’t change as quickly as they do in fashion, however year after year pastry chef’s all over the world are challenging themselves with innovative and edible creations. We asked Judy Crowe, Lead Cake Artist of Cake Sensations for some exclusive insight and expert advice into the hottest new luxury wedding cake trends, here is what she shared with us.

TALL TIERS While the average wedding cake is still 3 to 4 tiers, some couples are choosing to double the size of their wedding cake by interspersing tiers of 4 to 6 inches of sugar or real flowers between each layer. It is not uncommon for modern brides to request a cake over five feet tall.

PERSONALIZED DETAILS Cakes can be highlighted with personal features from the wedding decor such as custom monograms used on invitations, fabric details from the reception, flowers to mirror the bouquets or centre pieces. Custom lace edible appliqués can be made from a sample of lace from the bride’s dress and replicated on the cake.

TEXTURE There are so many methods used to incorporate texture into beautiful cake decorating. Cake tiers resembling the bark of a tree, covered with silver edible sequins, sugar jewels, or layered with delicate ruffles are just a few. Often used on only one or two tiers, some decorating techniques from 25 years ago are making a comeback with a modern twist, such as edible lace.

SPARKLE Whether it is bands of rhinestones, dangling crystals or edible jewels, cakes that sparkle make a beautiful centerpiece. Brooches, jewels and pearls can also be added for extra sparkle. Made from various forms of sugar, they can be gilded with real edible gold, or pearl finishes.

DESSERT TABLES Dessert tables with a wedding cake as the centre piece, along with many choices of macaroons, meringues, truffles and candies, are personalized and elegant options for a wedding celebration. Variety allows you to further personalize and also cater to more of your guest’s preferences.

GROOM’S CAKE The tradition of a groom’s cake goes back to the Victorian era, but they were also popular in Canada about a generation ago. A gift from the bride to her groom, the groom’s cake should reflect the groom’s character, hobbies, or interests and may even be humorous and threedimensional.

FAVOURS & FLAVOURS A mini cake decorated like the wedding cake and boxed to take home is a great way for guests to enjoy the wedding cake again the next day. Alternatively, porcelain tea cups with a gourmet cupcake inside make beautiful and delicious individual gifts. Unique artisanal flavours are also a great way to delight your guests and offer a unique experience. Try floral and herbal flavours like lilac, violet, rose, and green tea.

C

SPECIAL DIETS There are more diet concerns faced by today`s bride and groom than ever before. Most weddings need to accommodate guests with nut allergies and one-third of Canadians are choosing gluten-free, due to Celiac disease, gluten-sensitivity or because of preference.

It all starts with a consultation. It would be wise to bring anything that you are using as inspiration for your wedding day to your first appointment with your pastry chef. This could be invitations, fabric, photos or flowers. Be prepared to discuss your vision for your wedding and how the cake will be displayed on the table. You will also need to know how big your cake needs to be. This, of course, will depend on the number of servings you require. Always request a cake tasting, that’s the best part! “When a cake goes into production, sugar flowers and special embellishments (edible lace, jewellery, cast or pulled-sugar features, moulded items, sculptures etc.) are prepared. Unique structures may need to be built and hanging crystals prepared to size. We then coordinate with the venue and or wedding planner regarding the delivery time and cake table preparation. The cake is transported in several pieces and assembled on site by a cake artist and assistant. The finishing details are applied on site to ensure that the cake looks sensational and is not damaged during transportation.” – Judy Crowe, Lead Cake Artist - Cake Sensations

2016 STATIONERY

A wedding is a remarkable and meaningful celebration, and your invitation ensemble plays a very important role. A wedding invitation heralds your momentous event while building excitement leading up to your big day. It also provides the much needed details about your wedding to your guests while setting the tone for the entire event. In a similar way, a simple save the date card can tell the story of how you met. Together, your invitation ensemble has the ability to make a bold and public first statement about who you are as a couple.

METAL FOILS It's hard to compete with this glitzy trend. Gold, silver and copper foils are popping up everywhere, from invitations, to escort cards. Be adventurous with a heavily patterned gold design, or use the technique to highlight your names or your wedding date. Consider mixing two metallic foils for a daring, luxe effect.

LETTERPRESS Letterpress dates back to the fifteenth century and had nearly become a lost art, but has recently made resurgence in wedding invitations. Comparable in quality to a traditional engraved invitation, but less costly, letterpress produces debossed images or text (the opposite of engraving), and has a soft hand-wrought appearance that takes coloured inks especially well. The Social Page works with a “green letterpress print shop, powered by wind energy. Their products are all printed on an exclusive, and environmentally friendly, luxury bamboo paper.

GRAPHIC Bold, graphic lines in your stationery design give your ensemble a contemporary feel, with a bit of edge. Pair the graphic style with bright and daring colors to create a striking design. Coloured, die cut edges and dramatic envelope lining patterns continue to be popular choices. Dramatic colour creates a visceral response; the trend is to combine them with bold typesetting, specialty papers, and patterns. A

CALLIGRAPHY A visual art related to writing, calligraphy is the design and execution of lettering with a broad tip instrument, such as the dip pen, or brush, among other writing instruments. Modern calligraphers are creating new hands that feel totally fresh. Expert penmanship, ornate calligraphy and artistic flourishes are predicted to be a growing trend in 2016.

NATURAL Surface texture and appearance are collectively known as the paper's finish, and each finish will affect the papers printability and receptiveness to ink. Many couples these days are looking for an organic style paper with a matte finish. The “laid” or “linen” look is still popular, with a faint grain apparent in the papers texture. A creamy natural coloured paper, with a subtle texture and weight, is not only down-to-earth in its un-refined elegance, but also versatile when it comes time to design.

ore and more clergy and officiants are willing to officiate in hotel ballrooms and outdoors, vineyards and beaches, meaning that couples can choose spaces that hold significant meaning to them and they can also be decorated in any way that they choose. It is important to remember that there are two, if not more, stages of your wedding day, and each one has to be carefully planned and designed. The ceremony is the most significant part of your wedding day, and it should be designed in a meaningful way. Today’s couples have entered into a whole new world of design and decor by combining elements of date specific eras, and contemporary style. The dramatic juxtaposition between bold colours, glamorous details, and theatrical staging creates a memorable and exciting experience for your guests. Hiring a reputable designer is your guarantee that every detail has been attended to, from your grand entrance, to the aisle design, to the lighting for the photographer and videographer. “A designer specializes in envisioning the look and feel of your wedding, and designing an action plan to bring this artistic vision to life. The designer is able to assess how best to utilize your budget for your particular wedding's needs. They also coordinate all decor elements to ensure cohesiveness in your weddingincluding florists, decor suppliers, cake designers, lighting experts, and sound technicians.” – Gill Boyd, Red Events Design & Decor Your wedding celebration is also a statement about your style as a couple. So, instead of doing ten of your favourite things on a shoestring budget, chose to do five things exceptionally well instead. Your planner will ensure that every dollar is well allocated so that you can attend to more important family matters. “Be yourself. This might sound odd, but when a couple are true to themselves and don't lose sight of that in the planning of their day, an unforgettable wedding is bound to happen. Think about the details, the little touches that people will remember. You don't need many but a few well thought out details will leave your guests feeling loved.” – Cory Christopher

When it comes to event design, Calgary is a magical place where anything is possible. Whether you dream of Moroccan inspired tents layered with linens, or crisp lakeside elegance with grand vistas, there is a decor company with just the right furniture and decorative elements to make it feel authentic. Don’t forget that lighting design is a critical element in creating the atmosphere that will make your decor and your photographs really stand out. “A decor company is a one stop service for your wedding needs. They will often have a designer on staff, and they can offer solutions for your wedding decor based on their design experience. They will make suggestions based on your tastes, or even offer a starting point from which to build the wedding theme. They will often take care of other rentals as well, and they can provide staff for the set up and tear down of your event.” – Gill Boyd, Red Events Design & Decor Rental companies differ in that they often do not offer setup or teardown services, additional staff, or design advice. However, they are a great option for the couple who love to plan events, and have the time to research and choose exactly what they want.

LOUNGE SEATING Many guests look forward to sitting and chatting with friends and family at weddings. For this reason, adding comfortable lounge seating to your reception makes perfect sense. Not only is lounge seating modish, but your guests will appreciate having a comfortable place to relax instead of being stuck sitting at their dinner table on uncomfortable chairs. Having a variety of seating options like sofas, chairs, and love seats will allow your guests to choose what’s most comfortable to them.

FLORAL DÉCOR Flowers impart symbolism as well as splendour to any wedding decor, and they are one of the most lavish and versatile design elements available. The floral arrangements at your ceremony celebration are considered by many to be the most important design element as they are a first impression and an indication of what is yet to come. Design your floral arrangements according to the space they will occupy. When selecting your ceremony flowers, be sure to carefully consider your surroundings and existing features of the venue so that your arrangements will enhance and improve upon what is there, rather than creating a new logistical problem of where to put them.

MIRRORS & MERCURY GLASS Mirrors, mercury treated glass, and other reflective materials bounce light and can significantly brighten a small room while making it look bigger. Multiply the effect of your flower arrangements and candle light by placing them near mirrors or mercury glass.

RIGGED LIGHTING & FLORAL CHANDELIERS Rigged lighting, floral chandeliers and garlands for ceremonies and receptions, often seen hanging from an arch or arbour, have been popular for the past few years and will continue to be a trend in luxury wedding design in 2016. Lighting is the single most effective tool for creating ambiance and mood. Done properly it can be the difference between intimate and institutional, ordinary and extraordinary. Lush trailing chandeliers and floral installations above reception tables make wonderful conversation pieces. There is no end to the amazing possibilities when it comes to suspending florals, decor, drapery and rigged lighting, but it is important to hire professionals to ensure that it is done safely.

GRAND ENTRANCES One of the best ways to instantly impress your guests upon their arrival is with a well-defined entryway. Framed with greenery, blooms, crystals or drapes, your planner can help you design an artistic entrance to your reception that will leave a lasting impression on your guests.

CHAIR CAPS Forget chair covers that drape every seat in swaths of fabric; for ANDRAS PHOTOGRAPHY 2016, it’s all about sleek PHOTO: chair caps. NotSCHRAM only do these chic accents DECOR: RED EVENTS offer a simple way to add interest to your table scape, but they also provide a lovely means by which to incorporate subtle colour and texture into your reception room. Chair caps work best with Chiavari chairs due to their design. Depending on your motif, there are boundless fabric options to pick from including patterns, sequins, and even faux fur.

CANDLE LIGHT Candles have long been a popular wedding decor accent, but they’ll be especially prevalent in 2016. This year we expect to see rows of votives and pillars lining ceremony aisles and clusters of tapered candles and candelabras topping reception tables. Candles can change the entire dynamic of a space. Tapered candles can elongate a room, candelabras add instant drama, and clusters of votives can bring warmth to even the most enormous reception venue.

LAYERS OF LINENS Layers upon layers of fabric, textures and patterns are a popular luxury decor trend, especially in table linens. Full length linens layered with overlays that have special detailing like embroidery, beading, and fine lace are also fashionable. Use at least two to three layers of lush fabric to create a truly luxe look.

Art Nouveaau Art Nouveau is a style of art which attempted to combine all categories of art into one decorative unity. It is based on graceful, elegant, linear forms. Its favourite pattern was the whiplash line, its typical shape the lily, yet there was a strong geometric side as well that in the long run proved of even greater significance. The goal of Art Nouveau was to raise the crafts to the level of fine arts, abolishing the distinction between them. Art Nouveau had a profound impact on public taste. It was meant to be a “popular art” that was available to everyone, but it often became so extravagant that it was only affordable to the wealthy. This romantic, Art Nouveau inspired table decor was designed by Lynn Fletcher Weddings, and their team of experts listed in the credits.

Cirquee Surreal

The French Surrealist movement sought to channel the unconscious as a means to unlock the power of the imagination. A literary as well as an art movement, its supporters were dedicated to expressing the imagination as it is revealed in dreams. The movement went on to shape many more after it, and the style remains influential to this day. This surreal and imaginative wedding design “Cirque-Surreal is a testament to surrealist style combined with informed design choices, presented by Red Events Design & Decor.

Canadiana

Canadian art refers to visual arts and craft disciplines originating from the geographical area of contemporary Canada. The nature of Canadian art reflects diverse origins, as artists have taken their traditions from all over the world and adapted them to reflect the reality of life in Canada. A group of landscape painters called the Group of Seven aimed to develop the first distinctly Canadian style of painting. They, along with other revolutionary painters such as Emily Carr and Tom Thompson, painted many notable works while on location in the back country of Canada's wilderness. This table decor was inspired by the magnificent Lake Louise, and incorporates some ideologies derived from Canadian Naturalist art. Designed for Luxe by Cory Christopher, this artistic table-scape exemplifies innovative design, and perfectly complements the grandeur of the Canadian Rockies.

Impressionism

Shimmering colours, reflections in water, landscape and light combine in the great artworks of the Impressionist movement. These works were often as much reflections of the imagination as they were of reality, and they conveyed a different sense of time and place. This inspiring table-scape, designed by Love Crush Weddings, works in complete harmony with its natural surroundings. Yet, no matter where you look, there is something thoughtful and beautiful inviting you deeper into the serene, watery world.

Frozen Summer

Rich jewel tones take on a luxurious appeal in this icy table-scape inspired by Monet watercolours and designed by Boutiq Weddings & Events. The slow melting ice sculpture is a reminder of the passage of time, with every passing moment revealing something new, colourful and fragrant. Silver chargers, shining cutlery and frosted glassware add an expert polish to the setting, while clear Chiavarri chairs seem to disappear into the lush backdrop.

THE ART OF

T

his fourth edition of Luxe by Calgary Bride is themed “Modern Art”. “Art” is almost as difficult to define as “love”, and yet both seem to rely somewhat on passion, and honesty. We live in a changing society, where our notions about love, art, and all matters of institutional thinking are being challenged, and are evolving as a result. The art that resulted from the Modern Art age reflected revolutions in both society and critical thinking. This book is a collection of wedding designs, inspired by contemporary artists that are credited for reflecting, and often influencing, a rapidly changing modern world. Combined with the celebration of a marriage, we believe that these artistic designs address the very substance of modern existence: the pursuit of happiness, knowledge, and love. It is the featured photographers, designers, planners, caterers, florists, fashion houses and stylists in these pages who distinguish us from our competitors. Our team has enjoyed every moment of this year, working will all of our contributors on editorial shoots, conducting interviews with industry experts, attending wedding fair’s and expos, and getting to know many of the most talented wedding professionals that our area has to offer. As our industry embarks upon this New Year we will continue to work as a team to investigate, curate, critique, and journey together to bring you the inspiration for your own picture perfect wedding. We work passionately as a community, unified by our mutual appreciation for innovative and beautiful wedding design. Our mission is to produce a refined statement on fashion, design and the luxury experience for you. I hope you enjoy reading this issue as much as we enjoyed creating it for you! Congratulations on your engagement and may all your dreams of love come true.
