Calgary Philharmonic Orchestra 2018/2019 Season
A
Dear friends, Our first year together — what a success! It is a great pleasure for me to welcome you to a brand new Season. Over the past year, I have enjoyed getting to know this wonderful city and you, our audience. I am thrilled to share with you this exciting and innovative new Season, filled with dynamic guest conductors and soloists. We continue our partnership with Meludia, and I hope that you have had fun using it to develop your ears. Our live-streaming initiative has been a tremendous success, as we continue to grow our audience world-wide.
Rune Bergmann Music Director
What better way to kick-off our new Season this Autumn than with the one and only Renée Fleming. Her amazing career has touched and inspired audiences everywhere, and I guarantee this will be an evening to remember. Something new for the holidays is my special invitation to you to Rune’s Classical Christmas featuring the wonderful Calgary Philharmonic Chorus and Cantaré Children’s Choir. This Winter, celebrate Mozart’s (and my) birthday with some of the composer’s rare and favourite works. The Rebirth Symphony by Polish composer Mieczysław Karłowicz is a fantastic piece that has never been performed in Calgary, and in combination with the Brahms’ Double Concerto performed by our Concertmaster and Principal Cello, this will be a very special day. In Spring, we shine a light on the revolutionary musicians and composers in our Under The Influence Festival. Yefim Bronfman and Measha Brueggergosman end the Season with some of the most beautiful music ever written. We have something for everyone and I hope you find the Season inspiring and interesting. I’m looking forward to seeing you and your friends and family in the concert hall!

“I started playing the double bass when I was 12. At that age I was mainly interested in rock music and just wanted to play the bass guitar, but at the suggestion of my mom (a cellist), I began taking classical double bass lessons as well. I’m glad that I did! I love the physical sensation of playing the bass. It vibrates so much, you can really feel it in your bones. As the lowest-pitched string instrument, it provides the harmonic foundation for the Orchestra.

Crowned “the People’s Diva” and beloved the world over, four-time GRAMMY® Award-winning soprano Renée Fleming returns to Calgary for one of the most highly anticipated concerts of the Season. Acclaimed as having “the most sheerly beautiful soprano voice on the planet,” her rich-hued tone, diverse repertoire, and breathtaking artistry have made Ms. Fleming one of the greatest musical ambassadors and vocal legends of our time.
Proclaimed the “Father of Symphonies,” Joseph Haydn changed the course of history with his mastery of orchestral writing — power, drama, and élan which we hear in this, his final symphony. It pairs evocatively with JUNO nominated composers Larysa Kuzmenko’s Behold the Night and Vincent Ho’s highly anticipated The Sandman’s Domain: Concerto for Trombone and Orchestra — two enchanting works that journey into the realm of magic!

“I started playing percussion at age two — I loved hitting things to make loud noises. I really love how every movement you make creates a different sound. It fascinates me and I try to explore that aspect as much as possible. Percussion can bring a variety of things, that’s what’s so cool about it. Maybe it’s a solid rhythm, or a shimmering sound, or an epic boom, a loud crash. There are so many options with percussion.”

“I started violin at age four. Playing violin opens up a new relationship between your mind and your body. To be able to imagine a sound and then produce it is an amazing feeling. Beyond the physicality of the instrument, I appreciate the ability to explore and connect to the past through the beautiful repertoire we play. I can play a Haydn quartet written several centuries ago, and still understand the jokes he composed into his music.

Brahms v. Radiohead

9 March 2019 / 7:30PM Jack Singer Concert Hall
If you don’t know his name, you should. Steve Hackman is one of the most innovative artists contributing to a new landscape in classical music. With impeccable training and a brilliant musical imagination, his performances have been acclaimed as “in a class of [their] own.” He conducts Brahms’ First Symphony, which is the source material for his boundary-shattering Brahms v. Radiohead project, featured in concert on 9 March.
A synthesis of Brahms’ Symphony No. 1, first performed in 1882, and Radiohead’s album OK Computer, released over a century later in 1997. Arranger and conductor Steve Hackman constantly challenges what is possible and permissible, with Radiohead songs being altered or superimposed above Brahms’ score, creating new journeys in a compelling and captivating world. Attend Rush Hour on 7 March to hear Hackman conduct Brahms’ Symphony No. 1 whole and unaltered before this concert’s stunning transformation.

“I started playing the tuba in grade six. My school band needed tubas and from the first notes I knew I was home. I’m a bass note kind of a guy. I love being a supporter and collaborator in the Orchestra. Certain instruments get the melodies all the time but many of us get to add sounds that blend and help others. I love that role, but give me a tuba solo and it’s go time!”

“I started violin when I was eight years old. At age 12, while playing violin in the Calgary Youth Orchestra, the conductor pointed to me and said: “You there! You are going to play the viola!” I fell in love with the instrument and haven’t looked back since. The viola, in the Orchestra, is the glue that holds together the middle of the string sound — it bridges the violin and cello sounds and is like the condiments in a sandwich, the juicy middle where everything interesting happens.”

“I started playing the cello at age five, here in Calgary. I grew to love the instrument to the point I couldn’t live without it. The CPO played a big part in my pursuit for a career in music as it was at a CPO concert with Yo-Yo Ma when I was eight years old, that really opened my eyes to the possibilities of the instrument.”

Described as the “perfect storm of talent,” CPO’s Principal Percussionist Joshua Jones headlines the first evening of the Under the Influence Festival in Gareth Farr’s Percussion Concerto. Journey into the overwhelming emotion of Tchaikovsky’s Sixth Symphony, and the eclectic and impossibleto-categorize artistry of Frank Zappa — the ‘70s musical icon who melds Stravinsky, Rock & Roll, and electronic collage in his iconoclastic, time-bending compositions.
In this late-night presentation, JUNO Award and Polaris Prize-winning Inuk throat singer Tanya Tagaq stars in the viscerally moving Qiksaaktuq; accompanied by Fausto Romitelli’s haunting and dissonant Dead City Radio and Barber’s First Symphony — an intense masterpiece from one of America’s greatest composers.

“Nothing short of a dream job, sharing the stage with the exceptional musicians of the CPO has been a privilege thus far. I was drawn to the art of conducting by the profound impact of music written for symphony orchestra, and hearing this music come to life on a weekly basis in Calgary is a continuing pleasure indeed.”
