2020/2021 Season Brochure

Page 1

Welcome! It is my pleasure to welcome you to the Calgary Philharmonic’s 65th Season. As we celebrate 65 years in this great city, we reflect on many moments of bringing people together to share in the experience of incredible music. We’ve grown along with the city and have helped make Calgary a wonderful place to live. This year is not only a significant milestone for the Orchestra, but also for one of the greatest composers of all time. We continue our 2020: Year of Beethoven series, celebrating the composer’s 250th birthday. Don’t miss his final four symphonies — the grand finale in December will be a night to remember! We kick off the Season with Broadway sensation Bernadette Peters performing the songs that have made her a household name and we thank the Taylor Family Foundation for helping us bring performances of this calibre to Calgary. In April, we’re thrilled to bring back superstar violinist Joshua Bell, whose sold-out performance seven years ago wowed Calgarians. This benefit concert is made possible thanks to the extraordinary generosity of philanthropist Heather Edwards. Another highlight is trailblazing Cree singer-songwriter Buffy Sainte-Marie. Her powerful music has inspired people since her groundbreaking debut in 1964. I’m also excited to present two of the most epic works in music history — Bruckner’s seventh and Mahler’s fifth symphonies. We continue to support the creation of Canadian works with a number of new commissions, including one dedicated to our younger audience. The beloved children’s story The Caboose Who Got Loose comes to life with music in one of our Symphony Sundays for Kids concerts. As I embark on the new Season with this wonderful Orchestra, I look forward to continuing the journey we started together in Calgary and I am so glad to be part of an organization that strives to inspire and unite our community through music. Music brings us together. It is the universal language that reminds us of our shared humanity. Whether you join us at our home at the Jack Singer Concert Hall, at one of our free noon-hour performances in the community, or at our education programs, thank you for making us part of your life.
