Norwegian conductor Rune Bergmann is Music Director of the Calgary Philharmonic Orchestra, Artistic Director and Chief Conductor of the Szczecin Philharmonic in Poland, and Music Director of Switzerland’s Argovia Philharmonic. Highlights of Bergmann’s 2021/2022 Season include the opening of a new concert hall for the Argovia Philharmonic, returning to the Baltimore Symphony and Odense Symphony, and debuting with the Colorado Symphony and Utah Symphony. Bergmann also regularly conducts distinguished orchestras and opera houses, including the Oslo Philharmonic, Norwegian National Opera, Bergen Philharmonic, Wroclaw Philharmonic, Orquesta de Valencia, and the Mainfranken Theater Würzburg, as well as the Symphony Orchestras of Malmö, Helsingborg, Bergen, Kristiansand, Stavanger, Trondheim, and Karlskrona, and Lisbon’s Orquestra Sinfonica Portuguesa. In North America, he has appeared with the Alabama, Baltimore, Detroit, Edmonton, Grand Rapids, Pacific, Houston, and Toledo Symphony Orchestras, as well as the Brevard Music Festival. Bergmann has been Artistic Director of Norway’s innovative Fjord Cadenza Festival since its inception in 2010, and his former posts include Deputy-General Musik Direktor with the Augsburger Philharmoniker and Theater Augsburg in Germany.
Concert pianist Janina Fialkowska has been praised for her musical integrity, her refreshing natural approach, and her unique piano sound, thus becoming “one of the Grandes Dames of piano playing” (Frankfurter Allgemeine). Born in Canada, she began her piano studies with her mother, Yvonne Hubert, in Paris with Yvonne Lefébure and in New York at the Juilliard School with Sascha Gorodnitzki. Her career was launched in 1974, when the legendary Arthur Rubinstein became her mentor after her prize-winning performance at his inaugural Master Piano Competition, calling her a “born Chopin interpreter.” Since then she has performed with the foremost orchestras worldwide under the baton of such conductors as Zubin Mehta, Bernard Haitink, Lorin Maazel, Sir Georg Solti, Sir Roger Norrington, and Yannick Nézet-Séguin. She has won special recognition for a series of important premieres, notably Liszt’s newly discovered Third Piano Concerto with the Chicago Symphony. Her native Canada named her Officer of the Order of Canada and awarded her the Governor General’s 2012 Lifetime Achievement Award in Classical Music, as well as three honorary doctorates. about the pieces Piano Concerto No. 2 in F Minor, Op. 21 Fryderyk (Frédéric) Chopin 1810 to 1849 Chopin composed the two piano concertos in 1829 and 1830, at the end of his teens. Due to a delay in publishing, they appeared in the reverse order of their composition — the Concerto in F Minor, which will be performed at this concert, though labeled No. 2, is the earlier piece. At the time he composed it, he was in the midst of his first important love affair. The object of his regard was a gifted singer, Konstancja Gladkowska. His feelings made themselves felt in his music. He wrote to a friend, “I have already found my ideal, whom I worship faithfully and sincerely. Six months have elapsed, and I haven’t yet exchanged a syllable with her of whom I dream every night — she who was in my mind when I composed the slow movement of my concerto.” It received its highly successful premiere shortly after he completed it. He was the soloist, making his public debut in his nation’s capitol.
Symphony No. 4 Witold Lutosławski 1913 to 1994 Frequently praised as the most important Polish composer since Chopin, Lutosławski was one of the most widely performed composers of the 20th century. His orchestral music has proven particularly popular, appearing regularly on the programs of major international symphonies. His life was fraught with difficulties, many of them the result of Europe’s tumultuous political life. The First World War forced his family into exile in Russia. In 1918 they returned to Poland. His hope of continuing his education in Paris was dashed by the outbreak of the Second World War. He was captured by the Nazis but escaped and returned to Warsaw. During the war he eked out a living by playing the piano in cafés. During the immediate postwar years he worked for Polish Radio and composed a great deal of straightforward “functional” music for radio, theatre, film, and for performance by children. He based much of it on Polish folk songs. The artistic strictness of Poland’s postwar Communist government led to the suppression of individual expression. In parallel with Shostakovich and other composers in the Soviet Union, Lutosławski was forced to continue creating simple, innocuous music for public consumption. He followed his own creative muse through more complex and challenging works that he kept to himself. It was only during the post-Stalin thaw of the mid-1950s that he was finally free to follow his personal creative impulses in public. He also appeared frequently and widely as a conductor of his own works, in part because they called for innovative techniques, including passages of an ‘aleatoric’ or ‘random/chance’ nature. This music called for improvisational input from the performers, and its successful performance benefitted strongly from having the composer on the podium. Early influences on his compositional style included the impressionist works of Claude Debussy, and the effusive post-romanticism of his countryman Karol Szymanowski. Later, the cooler neo-classical style of Igor Stravinsky played a significant role in his creative evolution. He completed the last of his four symphonies in 1992. He conducted the premiere himself, leading the orchestra that commissioned it, the Los Angeles Philharmonic.
Symphonic Variations Witold Lutosławski Naturally this early work — composed in 1936 to 1938, shortly after he completed his musical education — is more traditional than Symphony No. 4. About the Calgary Phil The Calgary Philharmonic celebrated 65 years as a pillar of Calgary’s vibrant arts community in 2020 and has grown to be one of Canada’s most celebrated live music ensembles.
