Norwegian conductor Rune Bergmann is Music Director of the Calgary Philharmonic Orchestra, Artistic Director and Chief Conductor of the Szczecin Philharmonic in Poland, and Music Director of Switzerland’s Argovia Philharmonic. Highlights of Bergmann’s 2021/2022 Season include the opening of a new concert hall for the Argovia Philharmonic, returning to the Baltimore Symphony and Odense Symphony, and debuting with the Colorado Symphony and Utah Symphony. Bergmann also regularly conducts distinguished orchestras and opera houses, including the Oslo Philharmonic, Norwegian National Opera, Bergen Philharmonic, Wroclaw Philharmonic, Orquesta de Valencia, and the Mainfranken Theater Würzburg, as well as the Symphony Orchestras of Malmö, Helsingborg, Bergen, Kristiansand, Stavanger, Trondheim, and Karlskrona, and Lisbon’s Orquestra Sinfonica Portuguesa. In North America, he has appeared with the Alabama, Baltimore, Detroit, Edmonton, Grand Rapids, Pacific, Houston, and Toledo Symphony Orchestras, as well as the Brevard Music Festival. Bergmann has been Artistic Director of Norway’s innovative Fjord Cadenza Festival since its inception in 2010, and his former posts include Deputy-General Musik Direktor with the Augsburger Philharmoniker and Theater Augsburg in Germany.
At 17 years of age, Kevin Chen is already a prodigiously accomplished pianist and composer. From his earliest years in the musical world, his accomplishments have sparked recognition, including achieving First Class Honours with Distinction at age eight — the youngest ever to do so — in the Royal Conservatory Performers ARCT examination. He is now a firstprize winner of multiple international piano competitions, including the Franz Liszt International Piano Competition (Budapest, Hungary, September 2021), the Mozart International Piano Competition (Lugano, Switzerland, August 2020), the Hilton Head International Piano Competition (Hilton Head, South Carolina, March 2020), and the International Piano-e-Competition (Minneapolis, Minnesota, July 2019). As well, Chen’s success in composing for orchestra and piano is reflected in commissions, acclaimed public performances, and five published works. Chen has been performing with orchestras worldwide since the age of seven, including the Edmonton Symphony, Calgary Philharmonic, Vancouver Island, Okanagan Symphony, Minnesota, Hilton Head Symphony, Astana Opera Symphony, and Hungarian National orchestras. While completing high school in Calgary, Chen currently studies with Professor Marilyn Engle, and previously studied with Colleen Athparia.

Piano Concerto No. 3 in D Minor, Op. 30 Sergei Rachmaninoff (1873 to 1943) In the years following the creation of the immensely popular Piano Concerto No. 2, Rachmaninoff gave his creative attention to solo piano works and music for orchestra. In anticipation of his first visit to America, he decided to create a new piano concerto, with which he hoped to conquer the new world. He composed it during the summer and autumn of 1909. Such was the tightness of his schedule that he was forced to practice the concerto, using a silent, ‘dummy’ piano, on board the ship that was taking him to America. With Walter Damrosch conducting the Orchestra of the New York Symphony Society, Rachmaninoff gave the première of Concerto No. 3 on 28 November. It impressed neither audiences nor critics. They considered it too long, too complex, and less immediately attractive than No. 2. That second-class status remained in effect for many years, and not just because of the initial reaction. Rachmaninoff was not only one of the greatest pianists of the day, he was also one of the strongest. Bearing his own, almost superhuman gifts in mind, he had written a solo part so exhausting that few, if any others were equal to its demands. Even Josef Hofmann, the eminent virtuoso to whom Rachmaninoff dedicated it, declined to perform it. This unfortunate situation remained in effect until the arrival of a new lion of the keyboard, Rachmaninoff’s fellow Russian, Vladimir Horowitz. For many years, few besides he and Rachmaninoff played the third concerto. But with increasing numbers of young, ever more virtuosic pianists coming on the scene, it has come to rival Concerto No. 2 in numbers of performances.
Symphony No. 7 in D Minor, Op. 70 Antonín Dvořák (1841 to 1904) Building on the nationalist, folk-flavoured Czech school of composition that Bedřich Smetana had established, Dvořák raised it to new heights of sophistication and international popularity. He rarely quoted authentic folk tunes, preferring instead to compose original melodies in folk style. For Dvořák, music’s primary function was to praise the many aspects of life that gave him joy. As he put it in a letter he wrote to a friend during the composition of the seventh symphony, “Today I have just finished the second movement of my new symphony, and am again as happy and contented in my work as I always have been and, God grant, may always be, for my slogan is and always shall be: God, love, and country! And that alone can lead to a happy goal.” In June 1884, the Philharmonic Society of London bestowed an honorary membership upon him. In return, he agreed to write them a new symphony. He decided to take the opportunity to satisfy a goal which had been occupying his thoughts for some time: a desire to expand his creative range. This wish sprang from his realization that the folk-based style he had been cultivating had its limitations. In order to win recognition as a great composer, regardless of origin, he knew he would have to create a certain amount of music which, like the works of his friend and mentor, Johannes Brahms, communicated universal sentiments through international musical language. He completed Symphony No. 7 on 17 March 1885. He travelled to London to conduct the first performance, and to accept his Philharmonic membership.
