Send a text and help support children in our communities PhilKids is an afterschool music program run by the Calgary Phil in the Forest Lawn area. Musicians who teach this program see the difference it makes in these children’s lives throughout the school year as they learn and grow as young people and musicians. This is an opportunity they likely wouldn’t have if it wasn’t for PhilKids, and it’s also an important step toward making music education and access to the arts available to all children. If you’d like to support this effort, you can help by sending a simple text message to make a small donation through your phone bill. Here is how it works: 1. Using your mobile phone, text the word PHILKIDS to the number 41010. 2. You will receive a notification to choose either $10 or $20. Make your choice and press Send. 3. You will receive a request to confirm your gift — type YES, and press Send again, and your donation will appear on your next phone bill. It’s that simple! All donations made to PhilKids this month will be generously matched up to 50% by Shaw Birdies for Kids presented by AltaLink. Thank you so much for supporting the PhilKids program and helping us make music education accessible for children in our communities.

about the pieces Lyric for Strings George Walker 1922 to 2018 Walker was a trailblazing American composer who has enjoyed a significant surge in attention in recent years. In a lengthy career, he published more than 90 pieces, including piano and chamber works, songs and choral music. He received commissions from major American orchestras and in 1996 became the first Black composer to win the Pulitzer Prize for Music for his work Lilacs. The deeply expressive Lyric for Strings originated as the second movement of the string quartet that he composed in 1946 while a graduate student at the Curtis Institute of Music in Philadelphia. He transcribed it for string orchestra in 1990. It is his most frequently performed orchestral composition.

Oboe Concerto in D Major Richard Strauss 1864 to 1949 During the final days of the Second World War, American forces reached Garmisch-Partenkirchen, the Alpine German town where Strauss and his wife Pauline had come to live a short time before. One of the soldiers stationed there was John de Lancie, a Paris-trained professional musician who would soon afterwards become Principal Oboe of the Philadelphia Orchestra. “During one of my visits with Strauss,” de Lancie recalled, “I asked him if, in view of the numerous beautiful lyric solos for oboe in almost all his works, he had ever considered writing a concerto for oboe. He answered ‘No!’ And there was no more conversation on the subject. He later told a fellow musician friend of mine that the idea had taken hold of him as a result of that remark.” The Strauss Oboe Concerto unfolds in one, continuous movement. In its warmth, charm, and beauty, Strauss pays homage to Mozart, his favourite composer.

Symphony No. 5 in E-Flat Major, Op. 82 Jean Sibelius 1865 to 1957 Sibelius’s heroic fifth symphony underwent the longest, most difficult gestation of all his works. He began composing it during the summer of 1914, with the goal of having it premiered as the centrepiece of a concert to be given in Helsinki in honour of his 50th birthday. He made slow progress, writing in his diary, “It is as if God the Father had thrown down mosaic pieces from heaven’s floor and asked me to put them back as they were.” Nevertheless, the premiere took place as planned on 8 December 1915. What the audience members heard was much different from the work as it is known today. They reacted favourably, but the composer, who had completed it in some haste in order to meet the deadline, did not. The following year, he produced a revised version. Still not satisfied, he produced the definitive edition in the autumn of 1919. An entry in his diary for 21 April 1915 revealed an inspiration for the finale. The second theme is a noble melody introduced on the horns. He wrote that it represents a specific image: “Today at 10 to 11 I saw 16 swans. One of my greatest experiences! Lord God, what beauty! They circled over me for a long time. Disappeared into the solar haze like a gleaming silver ribbon. Their call the same woodwind type as that of cranes, but without tremolo…. A low-pitched refrain reminiscent of a small child crying. Nature mysticism and life’s angst! The fifth symphony’s finale-theme: legato in the trumpets!” Program Notes by Don Anderson © 2022
