2021/2022 Season Winter Calgary Philharmonic Orchestra

music moves

Greetings! This Fall we welcomed you safely back into our concert hall and what a beautiful and emotional reunion it was. I was thrilled to return to Calgary and connect once again with our wonderful musicians and audience. Our time apart reminded me how important it is not to take the things we value most for granted — family, friends, and live music experiences. Those three things are also top of mind during the holidays, and there’s no better way to kick off our Winter Series than with the return of a beloved tradition, Handel’s Messiah. This is also a joyous occasion because it’s the first time our fantastic Calgary Phil Chorus will be back onstage to perform for you. The new year begins with a must-see concert featuring a classical music superstar: virtuoso pianist Yuja Wang. She has thrilled audiences around the world with her talent and energy and we are fortunate to welcome her to Calgary, thanks to the extraordinary generosity of philanthropist Heather Edwards. We have two exciting collaborations to share with you this Winter. The Bear and the Wild Rose is an online series featuring acclaimed musician and humanitarian Tom Jackson and new works by four Indigenous composers: Cris Derksen, Sonny-Ray Day Rider, Jessica McMann, and J. Alex Young. The other collaboration is the result of the Black Lives Matter Murals Project with Pink Flamingo. This concert features the debut of I Rise, which is a new commission by Laura Hawley for our Chorus, and highlights some of the art this project brought to neighbourhoods throughout the city. Those are just a few of the upcoming highlights. As we move through the Season, we have a variety of music in store for you — a delightful musical story for children, a symphonic tribute to one of the greatest rock bands in history, an evening of romantic Italian music featuring dynamic Canadian soprano Marie-Josée Lord, and more. Music has the power to connect us, to move us, to inspire us — and we’re looking forward to sharing these memorable experiences with you.
