EDITOR’S NOTE

THE MASTERS AZALEA COCKTAILS AND ANDREW JACKSON ORANGE WHISKEY PUNCH It’s that time of year! The Masters will soon be in full swing and golf fans everywhere will be focused on the action this spring. While only a fortunate few get to attend the venerable event, millions watch on TV as the Southern traditions of Augusta National unfold mostly offscreen. From Pimiento Cheese Sandwiches to Azalea Cocktails and iconic Green Jackets, there really is no place like Magnolia Lane. So let’s get to the Azalea Cocktails! Made with pineapple juice, fresh lemon juice, vodka or rum, and a splash of grenadine, they’re great to make if you have a mob to entertain on Masters Sunday. Ingredients: 1 oz. fresh lemon juice, 2 oz. pineapple juice, 2 oz. vodka or rum, a splash of grenadine, and lemon slice. Combine first four ingredients with ice in a pitcher. Strain and pour in glasses over ice. Garnish with lemon slice. Now let’s get to a little more Southern history and another historic cocktail: When John Quincy Adams took the oath of office, it was under a dark cloud of controversy. The election of 1824 was a bitterly contested four-man race between Andrew Jackson (born in the backwoods of the Carolinas), Henry Clay, William Crawford, and Adams. Since no candidate won a majority of electoral votes, the election was thrown into the House of Representatives where Clay, as Speaker of the House, gave his support to Adams, even though Jackson won the most popular and electoral votes. Adams then quickly appointed Clay as Secretary of State. Outraged and feeling cheated out of the White House, Jackson called the deal a “Corrupt Bargain” to “cheat the will of the people.” With these accusations hanging over his head, Adams’ four years in office weren’t easy ones. Although his intelligence, family background, and political experience could have made him a great president, he lacked the charisma needed to create a base of loyal supporters. Not surprisingly, he lost the election of 1828 in a landslide, and when Jackson was inaugurated on March 4, 1829, twenty thousands of his loyal supporters, who believed he had been cheated out of the White House four years earlier, descended “like locusts” upon Washington “eager to celebrate the longdelayed victory of their champion.”

10

WINTER 2024

010_GN_EdNote_WINT24_B.indd 10

Jackson’s inauguration “sparked a celebration that did all but set fire to the White House” as thousands of rowdy fans crammed inside and destroyed the French furniture, silk draperies, and fine china as ices and cakes “were gobbled up as fast they appeared on long serving tables.” In a letter, a Washington socialite described the chaos this way: But what a scene did we witness! The Majesty of the People had disappeared, and a rabble, a mob, of boys, women, children, scrambling, fighting, romping. Ladies fainted, men were seen with bloody noses, and such a scene of confusion took place as is impossible to describe. But it was the People’s Day, and the People’s President, and the People would Rule!

Another observer described the chaos this way: Orange Whiskey Punch by barrel fulls were inside, but as waiters opened the door, a rush would be made, the glasses broken, the pails of liquor upset, and the most painful confusion prevailed. The tubs of Whiskey Punch were taken outside into the garden to lead the crowds from the rooms. Although no one knows how the punch was made that day, you can make Orange Whiskey Punch or Azalea Cocktails, named for the gorgeous pink azaleas in full bloom at the 13th at Augusta each spring, if you’ve got a mob to entertain on Masters Sunday! Enjoy your walk and drink responsibly, Suzy Evans, J.D., Ph.D.

SCPGA’s Centennial T

he Southern California PGA (SCPGA) is gearing up for a historic milestone this year as it prepares to celebrate its 100th anniversary in 2024. Founded in 1924, the SCPGA has played a pivotal role in shaping the golfing landscape of Southern California, currently boasting 1,693 PGA Golf Professionals spread across 509 facilities in a sprawling geographic area. Reflecting on a century of excellence, SCPGA President Eric Lohman remarked, “We reflect not just on the passing of a hundred years but also on the enduring legacy that our members have meticulously crafted.” The SCPGA’s journey began with the collaborative efforts of 25 visionary charter clubs and PGA members, who officially signed the Section Charter on November 3rd, 1924, in Los Angeles. These clubs and professionals laid the cornerstone for a century of golfing excellence, with their legacy continuing to influence the association’s mission and values. The SCPGA is not merely an organization but a collective force dedicated to excellence and innovation in the game of golf. Since its inception, the SCPGA has evolved into a multifaceted organization, serving as a nexus for competitive play, educational seminars, and community impact through the SCPGA Foundation. The Section is spread across five geographical Chapters, each playing a vital role in promoting growth and enrichment within their respective regions. The SCPGA Junior Tour was established in 1948 and stands as a testament to the association’s commitment to nurturing talent and growing the game we love. Creating a rich history of alumni who have moved on to the professional stage, such as Tiger Woods, Max Homa, Patrick Cantlay, Lizette Salas, Collin Morikawa, Rose Zhang, and countless others. The Junior Tour has become one of the largest and most respected junior golf programs in the country, hosting over 440 tournaments annually across Southern California. Since 1989, the SCPGA Foundation has made significant contributions and been a force in the commu12

Looking ahead to the centennial celebration, SCPGA Executive Director/ CEO Nikki Gatch, PGA, expressed pride in the association’s legacy and the commitment of its members. “As we embark on our centennial, we look back with gratitude, stand proudly in the present, and stride into the future with a renewed dedication to shaping the next hundred years,” said Gatch. The SCPGA’s centennial celebration will feature numerous Section tour-

Todd Anderson, PGA, at the California Teaching & Coaching Summit naments and functions hosted at the founding charter club venues, showcasing the association’s enduring legacy and commitment to golf excellence and community impact. As the SCPGA embarks on this centennial year and this significant milestone, golf enthusiasts are invited to join in celebrating 100 years of golf excellence, community impact, and continued dedication to the sport of golf. With a century of achievements behind it, the SCPGA looks forward to shaping the future of golf in Southern California for generations to come.

The LPGA Tour Returns to Southern California in 2024 With Two Premier Events in March and April LOS ANGELES – The LPGA Tour is set to return to Southern California this spring with two premier events set to take place in March and April. The FIR HILLS SERI PAK Championship, hosted at Palos Verdes Golf Club in suburban Los Angeles, will take place March 18-24. Seri Pak, one of the most decorated professional golfers in history from the Republic of Korea, is set to return to the LPGA Tour as host of the newly renamed championship, which will feature a field of 144 players competing for an elevated purse of $2 million, a $250,000 increase from 2023. “It is an honor to return to the LPGA Tour as host for the FIR HILLS SERI Pak Championship at Palos Verdes Golf Club,” said Pak. “Mentoring the next generation of golfers and giving back to the game I love is at the core of everything I do. I’m excited to kick off this new partnership and elevate this tournament to new heights on the LPGA Tour.” Palos Verdes Golf Club, often referred to as the “hidden gem” in Southern California, is set to host the LPGA Tour for a third consecutive year. 20-year old Ruoning Yin earned her first LPGA Tour victory at Palos Verdes Golf Club in 2023, ultimately elevating her to Rolex Rankings No. 1. Marina Alex captured her first LPGA Tour win since 2018 at the 2022 edition of the championship. One month later, the LPGA will go Hollywood when it returns to historic Wilshire Country Club for the JM Eagle LA Championship presented by Plastpro in Los Angeles. The JM Eagle LA Championship will take place April 22-28, where the field of 144 players will compete for a $3 million purse, one of the largest prize funds on the LPGA Tour outside of golf’s major championships. Newly announced for this year, the entire 144-player field will receive complimentary lodging accommodations during tournament week, courtesy of JM Eagle and Plastpro. “To be successful on the LPGA Tour requires a lot of costs week-in and week-out to compete at the highest level. Shirley and I are honored to provide complimentary hotel accommodations for all of the players competing in our great championship,” said Walter Wang, Chairman and CEO of JM Eagle. “Covering the hotel costs underscores our commitment to elevating the player experience and elevating this championship to be the premier event on the LPGA Tour.” The JM Eagle LA Championship will be in its second year in 2024, and overall, the sixth year the LPGA Tour has competed at Wilshire Country Club. Hannah Green captured her first LPGA Tour win in four years via a two-hole playoff in 2023. Past champions at Wilshire Country Club include Nasa Hataoka, Brooke Henderson, Minjee Lee and Moriya Jutanugarn. Tickets are on sale now for both championships at www.seripakchampionship.com and www.jmeaglelachampionship.com, which include grounds tickets and premium hospitality tickets offering a wide degree of entertainment and access. Several Los Angeles-area LPGA players are scheduled to compete at both championships, including Lilia Vu, Allisen Corpuz, Alison Lee and Danielle Kang. 14

GOLF & TRAVEL

YOU GET THE FEELING IT’S GOING TO BE A GREAT DAY ...when you pop the trunk to grab your clubs and the sounds of laughter and good tunes drift in from the driving range. As you get closer, the overwhelming sense is more of a family reunion or birthday party than a golf tournament, but you quickly realize from watching striped shot after striped shot and the approach taken by the golfers that this isn’t just happy hour. This is a group ready to play and looking to take a little scratch from their friends. Equal parts love fest and cage match. The LS2Man Tournament Series is built on “Shot Making & Socializing” and with the crew of stout golfers who love to have a good time, you get more than your fair share of both. Started 15 years ago as a small group of friends looking to connect over golf and “the hang”, the LS2Man tournaments have evolved to a series of events played everywhere from the foothills of the Sierras to the western shores of Ireland with stops everywhere in between. A common theme when you ask the question, “what’s the best thing about the LS2Man?’, the most common answer is “the lifelong friends I’ve made”. Maybe it’s the game of golf itself, maybe it’s the environment created by the founders, or (likely) the combination of both, but there’s a reason a large contingent of people who don’t miss a single event every year exists. This year’s series kicks off with a trip south of the border to Cabo San Lucas, providing seasoned LS2Man veterans and newcomers alike to play some of the best courses in Baja and experience the world class hospitality of the resorts hosting the event. It’s shaping up to be one of the greatest LS2Man experiences yet, and with limited spots still available, we recommend signing up quickly and finding out for yourself just how magical a few days of shot making and socializing can be. Just remember, bring some cash to settle those bets with your new lifelong friends. For more details on the Cabo LS2Man, the entire Series and to Register, scan below or go to www.ls2man.com.

PATRICK KOENIG STORY

PATRICK KOENIG’S Golf Year to Remember

LAGUNA BEACH RESIDENT SHATTERS RECORD FOR MOST DIFFERENT 18 HOLE GOLF COURSES PLAYED IN 365 DAYS

I

t all started at Monarch Beach Golf Links in Dana Point on Jan. 3, 2023. The dramatic setting overlooking the Pacific Ocean was an idyllic spot for Patrick Koenig to begin what became a 365-day, 44-state, near-35,000-mile odyssey in his outfitted recreational vehicle. The Laguna Beach resident went on to spend 23 more days in California, playing a different golf course each day, including four layouts at PGA West and finishing with a $29 round at Blythe Golf Course, 18

WINTER 2024

018-019_GN_RGVTour_WINT24.indd 18

where the general manager also works the grill. But the Golden State was only the beginning of what Koenig dubbed the RGV Tour 2.0 (RGV an acronym for Recreational Golf Vehicle). He had places to go, or more accurately, golf courses to play. Nearly 600 of them, in fact. And not in a lifetime, but in one calendar year. The talented golf photographer and blogger vaulted himself into the record books by playing 18-hole rounds on 580 different golf courses,

the adventure coming to a compelling end on January 2, 2024 at Chambers Bay Golf Course, located near Tacoma, Wash., site of the 2015 U.S. Open. The final stroke was a simple two-foot par putt, followed by a celebration with many friends who wanted to be there to mark the occasion. “This year has been one of the most challenging and rewarding years of my entire life,” Koenig said. “From Walmart parking lots to Shinnecock Hills, I have experienced many highs and many lows. But without a doubt, the most rewarding part of my journey has been the people that have joined in along the way.” He didn’t just break the record, he obliterated it. A Canadian couple had set the previous record in 200809, playing 449 different 18-hole courses over 365 days. Koenig tied that record in Denver at Green Valley Ranch Golf Club on Oct. 16, then broke it 24 hours later — on day No. 287 of his tour — at Omni Interlocken Golf Club in nearby Broomfield. “I am an equal opportunity golfer; I love to play anywhere, any time,” Koenig quipped. His tour took him everywhere from municipal courses to revered private county clubs, purposely showcasing the quality and diversity of golf in America. He even found time to venture outside the United States in summer, notching seven courses in Finland and Sweden. Teemu Ruuska — a co-creator of the RGV Tour 2.0 — is Finnish, and his company, Golf GameBook, which co-sponsored the tour, is among the top digital scorecard and social golf apps. Koenig used it to record all his rounds and uploaded exclusive content. “I was very proud to have partnered with him on this great adventure,” Ruuska emphasized. “Patrick is a person you want to have close, putting a smile on your face; he’s always positive.”

California Golf + Travel

06/02/2024 2:48 PM

“Golfers know how hard this is to do,” Ruuska added. “Playing almost two rounds per day, every day, but doing that always on a different golf course is something that makes this record almost impossible to break.” Additional tour sponsors provided footwear (Ecco), apparel (Breakfast Balls), and a remote-controlled golf cart (Stewart Golf). Koenig also raised $40,000 for various youth based golf charities across the country with the majority of donations going to First Tee. Koenig ended his journey at Chambers Bay with $15k going to Greater Seattle and Puget Sound chapters of First Tee. Along the way, Koenig suffered a few RV breakdowns, the failure of his first drone, and a broken wedge mishap. But his body managed to get through unscathed, which he attributes to healthy eating, no alcohol, a stretching regimen, slowing down his swing speed, and a trusty electric caddie that he affectionately named “Stewie.” He walked 70 percent of the courses he played. “Walking a golf course is probably five to 10 times more immersive than getting in a cart,” he stressed. “As a photographer, walking the course takes me to places and angles that I might not see if I’m in a cart.” The 580 total rounds in one year were easily the most aggressive golf schedule ever created. (There was even one day he played 72 holes on four different courses at Trump National Doral Golf Club in Miami.) That’s 10,440 holes, with the scratch golfer’s best round a 67 on the Boulder Course at Cimarron Golf Resort in Cathedral City, Calif. For now, Koenig is back home in Laguna Beach. He’s still teeing it up, just not every day. And he has a new moniker, thanks to a headline in The Wall Street Journal: “The Hero Maniac Who Played 580 Rounds of Golf in One Year.” Hero Maniac… yep, sounds about right.

R

eflection Bay Golf Club is set on luxurious Lake Las Vegas located 20 minutes east of the Las Vegas Strip. A 320 acre man-made lake, Lake Las Vegas is the centerpiece of this high-end residential resort community. Built in 1998, Reflection Bay Golf Club was designed by 18-time Major winner Jack Nicklaus. The course is designated as a prestigious Jack Nicklaus Signature Design, the only such course located in the state of Nevada. Reflection Bay played host to the Wendy’s 3Tour Challenge from 1998 to 2007, showcasing the talents of such champions as Bubba Watson, Fred Couples, John Daly, and Phil Mickelson. The lavish 32,000-square-foot clubhouse features a full golf shop, as well as casual and fine dining. The facilities at Reflection Bay provide the perfect setting for VIP golf groups, corporate outings, celebrations, and weddings. In addition to world-class golf and dining facilities, Reflection Bay offers some truly unique lifestyle experiences, including a private white sand beach, paddle boarding, and access to the La Contessa and Lady of the Lake yachts. We also feature one of the most unique concert experiences in the world, as our floating stage turns Reflection Bay into a beachside venue like no other. In May, 2023, Reflection Bay Golf Club closed to renovate putting greens surfaces, stripping the top inches of existing surface and removing all invasive plant species and organic matter. Surfaces were replaced with heartier and drought tolerant turf type Paspalum that provides a putting surface that can handle the extreme heat of Lake Las Vegas, shows minimal daily traffic or ball marks, and can withstand varying water sources. In addition to the new greens renovation, a new golf cart fleet was brought in along with new maintenance equipment and other new clubhouse projects that will be the realization of more than $2 million of improvements for the long-term success and sustainability of Reflection Bay. PGA SHOW

THE IMPORTANCE OF THE

2024 PGA SHOW

By ED TRAVIS he 71st PGA Show had its fourday run at Orlando’s Orange County Convention Center Jan. 23 through 26 and by all accounts it was a raging success. Tagged the “Major of the Golf Business” the PGA Show was formerly the PGA Merchandise Show but in 2022 the name was changed to reflect added emphasis on PGA Professionals continuing education and the wider variety of products and services exhibiting. The key question though is what is the importance of the PGA Show to golf and golfers? Is it as some have said a “Disneyland for golf nuts” or are there other factors that make it significant, even vital to our game?

T

22

WINTER 2024

022-024_GN_PGA_Wint24.indd 22

The PGA Show is an industry-only event built around the continuing education needs of the 30,00 PGA Professionals but it is also the annual meeting of the entire golf business attracting tens of thousands from around the world. A reasonable question is what is the PGA Show’s importance to the golf industry in general and particularly recreational players? The educational aspect for club professionals is a primary theme of the Show with 53 sessions on topics such as club marketing and finances, teaching and instruction, building junior and women’s programs, the use of technology in coaching…well, you get the idea. There is anything and everything to help those run-

ning our golf facilities to better serve players, employees, and their local communities. It is reasonable to say that if this were the show’s only purpose and accomplishment it would be justification for the time and money club pros and the industry invest. Bottom line, the better educated and motivated club pros are the better it is for recreational golf and golfers plus the other critical point, the more the game will grow and attract new participants. Also, not to be overlooked, the unparalleled opportunity for networking and effective job searches the Show provides. This is a service to club pros that is generally not available anywhere else, certainly on a national and international level.

The Old Town of Sitges

The Show’s 1954 beginning was in a Dunedin, Fla. parking lot where sales reps displayed clubs and shirts from car trunks and after several location moves in the intervening years settled in to the 1 million square feet of Orange County Florida’s Convention Center near Orlando. Growth had been steady until the Covid pandemic of 2021 resulted in cancellation and a “virtual Show” substituted which met with no one’s satisfaction. The 2022 Show returned to the OCC, but the number of exhibitors was down 40% to around 600 and attendance was a bare 15,000 or less than half of a “normal year” and most of the industry’s major companies did not exhibit. Last year was brighter with 800 exhibitors and 30,000 attendees and this year the Show was back to prepandemic levels with 1000 exhibitors and approximately 40,000 industry people. The number of new exhibitors is always a good measure of the Show’s relevancy and this year had 380 new companies, which would seem to be a sign that both soft and hard goods can look ahead to continued positive growth. For apparel and travel companies the Show is a must-attend and almost every brand you can name with the exception of Peter Millar and Nike was on display as were an overwhelming number of training aids,

software for clubs, high tech swing analyzers and simulators, etc. Certainly, a lot to cover and from the standpoint of someone who has been attending for more than 25 years mindboggling is an apt description. On the equipment side most of the manufacturers, major and minor, had space on the exhibit floor. Callaway Golf, the largest company in the industry, was showing the new Paradym Ai Smoke club line featuring four drivers all designed with the extensive use of artificial intelligence which analyzed data from more than California Golf + Travel

250,000 swings. Titleist exhibited three new ball models the premium AVX, the entry level TruFeel and mid-range Tour Soft. Cobra Golf’s premium Darkspeed drivers have reshaped aerodynamics and an Ai face with the LS model for better players, the game-improvement X model and super gameimprovement Max. Ping had crowds looking at the G430 MAX 10K driver, an extension of that popular family, with extremely high MOI making it more forgiving and maybe best of all straighter for average players. Those makers missing included Wilson Golf, PXG who has never exhibited, Tour Edge Golf a former stalwart not there last year either, and TaylorMade Golf who have not participated since 2018. Therefore, the other vital role the Show fulfills is making information about products and services available to club pros, industry members plus of course the media who have their own job of spreading the word to golfers. The cutting-edge technology involved with golf from swing analyzers to GPS rangefinders to the topology of the interior of a club face to the use of machine learning and artificial intelligence all needs to be understood and the Show is the perfect platform for this process. The four days in Florida sunshine are packed with things to do and see already but attendees are also

24

able to learn about new products from new companies giving these newbies the opportunity to create sales and enhance their visibility and image. It’s entirely possible the next hot club or golf bag or training aid was on display in the New Product Pavilion. Special aspects of the industry can also be highlighted at the Show and as in the last four years a large area for racquet sports specifically pickleball, the fastest growing sport in the U.S., with two courts with vendors offering a total of 54 products, everything from racquets and balls to shoes and pickleball specific fashion. NBA Hall of Fame member Rick Barry and LPGA pro Sherri

Steinhauer played an exhibition match that had crowds lining the court. Pickleball has become an integral part of the golf club experience with tennis courts being converted and new courts being built to accommodate the increase in players and maybe best of all, pickleball is a family-friendly sport for juniors and seniors. This is a good example of how the PGA Show is serving the industry, club professionals, and the golfer. So, to address the initial query as to the importance of the golf industry’s annual get-together the answer is clear, the PGA Show plays an irreplaceable role.

Little Course, BIG VICTORY THE REBORN GOLDEN GATE PARK GOLF COURSE IS A MODEL OF PUBLIC-PRIVATE PARTNERSHIP

By ALAN SHIPNUCK Photographs MATT GINELLA n March 4, 2023, the San Francisco golf community turned out to bid adieu to an old friend. Golden Gate Park Golf Course, a 9-hole par-3 on the western edge of one of America’s greatest urban oases, has been a beloved institution since 1952, but this charming little course suffered from decades of deferred maintenance. March 4th was the last day

the public could play GGPGC before it would close for an extensive infrastructure project, which was to include regrassing the course and installing a state-of-the-art irrigation system. Among the regulars, there was excitement and anticipation tinged with a little wistfulness. “It’s a great little course, I’m gonna miss it for the next six or seven months,” said Keith Robertson, 66, a retiree who plays Golden Gate a handful of times each week. Also

Josh Lewis (far left), Jay Blasi (middle) and Dan Burke have all done their parts to take Golden Gate Park Golf Course from a mid-level municipal experience to a bona fide national curiosity. making the scene was Angeline Kong, 10, who discovered Golden Gate by way of the First Tee-San Francisco. After studying drawings of what the new course will look like, Angeline enthused, “I can’t wait to see it come to life!” First Tee-San Francisco (FTSF) has operated GGPGC since 2013, thanks to the foresight of the late Sandy Tatum, the local golf patriarch who recognized the need to safeguard access to green grass facilities for First Tee kids. In 2023, the confluence of two events offered a rare opportunity to do something transformative: the First Tee’s lease was due for a renewal and the Golden Gate clubhouse had to be rebuilt after a fire. Enter Dan Burke, CEO of FTSF, who had a vision of what Golden Gate Park Golf Course could become. “This is an amazing golf course but it needed some TLC,” says Burke

4TH HOLE – BEFORE AND AFTER

He conceived of a sweeping restoration and course architect Jay Blasi eagerly signed on. A Northern California resident, Blasi is best known for his work on Chambers Bay, but in the years since he has mostly been working on private projects hidden behind the hedges. Blasi donated his services for Golden Gate, eager to give back to the game that has given him so much and enticed by the potential of the land. “What people probably don’t know,” says Blasi, “and what is most exciting from a golf design

standpoint is we are on sand dunes. If you dig down a foot you are in pure sand. Well, pure sand is the most important ingredient for great golf. And what is most meaningful here, when you think about the best par-3 courses, whether it’s the Preserve at Bandon or the Sand Box at Sand Valley, more often than not they are at a destination golf course where the clientele is going to be wealthy golfers taking a buddies trips. Here, we feel we have an opportunity to offer an equal caliber of quality and excite-

ment. And yet the folks who play here range from age 5-95, and come from all sorts of economic backgrounds. It is truly a municipal golf course for the people of San Francisco, but we feel we can give them something that people will travel around the world to see.” Blasi’s design featured a couple of holes resequenced for safety reasons, whimsically reshaped greens and exposed sandy edges to reconnect Golden Gate visually to nearby Ocean Beach. FTSF leadership and Burke doggedly raised $2.7 million California Golf + Travel

dollars from First Tee supporters to cover the construction costs, all the while navigating the fierce local politics in San Francisco. When construction began on March 6, the first order of business was to scrape away a foot of turf and thatch, revealing the rolling sand dunes beneath. In his redesign, Blasi balanced fun, whimsy and strategic challenge with the demands of hosting 40,000+ rounds per year, the bulk of them played by beginners, kids and seniors. On many of the reshaped holes the fairways are built up on the edges, to 28

keep errants shots in play, and the green complexes feature slopes to guide balls back toward the putting surface. There will be no rough at GGP, so worm-burners get more roll on the firm, fast fescue. Expansive teeing areas allow for three sets of tees, so newbies can play a very short course while from the back of the box better players will have to reach for mid- and perhaps longirons. Blasi and his project manager, Josh Lewis, created lovely, rustic sandscapes that connect the course visually to the nearby beach, but these areas are situated well behind

greens or in other out-of-the-way areas that are unlikely to ensnare many golfers. In late-April, with half of the holes shaped and irrigation piping in place, it was already apparent that something special was brewing at GGP. “No offense to other facilities around the country,” said Burke, “but from my lens, having a lifetime in the game, this will probably be the best 9-hole par-3 course in America.” For a three-part video series and a podcast with all of the Golden Gate Park protagonists, go to www.firepitcollective.com.

THE DREAM TEAM OF GOLF IN

SPAIN Llavaneras Golf

By JO MAES, EGTMA he 1996 Olympics in Barcelona produced something the world had never seen before: a U.S. Basketball team comprised of all the stars of the NBA, including Jordan, Magic, Bird, Barkley, Stockton, Malone, Ewing, Drexler, Robinson and more. Needless to say, there was no real competition and they took Olympic Golf in emphatic fashion and cemented Barcelona’s reputation as a must-visit city. Roll on nearly 30 years and there is still a dream team around town: the superb golf clubs that form part of the Barcelona Golf Destination and, recently, I was fortunate enough to visit some of them and was treated to many of the culinary and liquid delights this area has to offer.

First up is the Real Club de Golf El Prat that takes its name from the area where the current airport is located. Started in the early 1900s in the center of town, it moved to the outskirts when the airport needed more room to expand and it provided El Prat golf with an opportunity to build a 45 hole complex slightly more inland within a nature reserve. Greg Norman was the architect and he put together two full 18’s with Yellow and Pink plus a Green academy course. This is first and foremost a members’ club and the who’s who of the Barcelona social and business elite are well represented. This does mean that the facilities are always top notch or that the course is always meticulously prepared, but the Who’s Who of Barcelona business and sports play at

N El Prat and it is home to many tour pros. I played the Pink, and at 7,060 Yards, it is the longest with a slope of 145 and the most testing. The front 9 is the flatter of the two while the back 9 meanders along the outskirts of the property. Big undulating greens protected by large bunkers test every aspect of your game. The restaurant serves fabulous food with a daily changing menu. The La Mola Hotel on site is funky and quirky and only offers golf and business stays. El Prat Golf Clubhouse designed by Carlos Ferrater.

Llavaneras Golf - Hole 17 Not too far away is the Barcelona Golf which also has a hotel on site and you can walk from your room to the clubhouse which is always handy. The course was founded in 1989 during the European golf boom and it was Jose Maria Olazabal, still early in his professional golf career, who carved out one of his first 18 hole courses in what remains a challenging piece of land. It’s primarily a member’s course with visitor play available. A bit further North along the coast is the Llavanares Golf Club that was built in 1945, and Fred Hawtree creCalifornia Golf + Travel

ated the current layout. It’s short (5,500 Yards), narrow (on 34 hectares), and quirky (Par 70) but lots of fun to play. It feels like you are playing in somebody’s garden because it is such a beautiful area. Normally, I would reach for the driver on every tee shot, but not here, so working out your yardages from the tee to give you the best chance to score is paramount. It has views of the Mediterranean on most holes and especially from the clubhouse that sits on the hill overlooking the course and where the food is again excellent. THE OTHER THREE Terramar is situated in Sitges and hugs the gorgeous Mediterranean coastline. It has hosted many professional events, including, most recently, the Ladies European Tour for the past four years. Vallromanes is another F. Hawtree design with its historic 1712 castle clubhouse and covering 6,650 tree lined yards. The last one in the area is the Golf de Montanya in the middle of the Montseny Natural Park high in the foothills of the Pyrenees. Ryder Cup player David Thomas designed 18 challenging holes which are as tranquil as you can get. Like every club in the area, the quality of the clubhouse food is unsurpassed. The golf courses got together to create the Barcelona Golf Passport that allows golfers to combine courses at a fixed price which works out cheaper than booking them individually. You can book the pass with live tee times via their website.

Bouquet d’Alelia Vineyard Outside of the golf, there is plenty to do and see. We mentioned the quality of the food in the clubhouses and this extends to wine where local wineries produce quality wines in testing conditions. The DO Allele is a 7 generations run small vineyard where the story is as important as the wine. You can also visit the small vineyards that offer wine tastings. For those who want to see what European fashion is all about, the La Roca Village Shopping center brings together the world’s best brands and creates a shopping experience like no other. There are personal shoppers at hand to assist. The Barcelona El Prat airport has several daily direct flights from Los Angeles, Miami, New York, and Philadelphia. Upon arrival, the golf courses are all less than an hour drive from the airport. For more information visit www.barcelonagolfdestination.com

DUCA DEL COSMO LEADS THE FASHION EVOLUTION AWARD-WINNING AND LUXURY EUROPEAN GOLF FOOTWEAR BRAND CELEBRATES ITS 20TH ANNIVERSARY

D

uca del Cosma, the luxury European golf footwear brand that combines stylish Italian designs with top quality materials and expert handcrafting leads the fashion evolution, a statement tribute to its cofounder and lead designer Baldovino Mattiazzo and the company’s future. Titian and Billini are considered two of the greatest painters from Venice. Their art can be seen on canvas or frescos—Mattiazzo’s art can been seen on his footwear designs. Italian born Mattiazzo is a native of Venice, a city known for its beauty, culture, and art. He studied fashion at the Sarteco Fashion School and graduated with top honors. He is naturally cool and exudes a sense of artistic freedom, and, in his youth, resembled a young Peter Fonda in Easy Rider. In 2004, he and his German-born partner Antje Elle, who graduated from the highly acclaimed Munich School for Fashion Design, and both passionate golfers, recognized that the golf world needed a breath of fresh air with some style and sophistication so they founded Duca del Cosma, a brand that boasts an Italian artistry and inspiration that meets German precision. The duo named the company after a traditional Venetian name that has

been used in the Baldovino’s family for generations—Duca del Cosma— meaning the Duke of Cosma. Cosma is a traditional Venetian name. In homage to great Italian brands, the signature color of Duca del Cosma is red. The brand had enjoyed years of global recognition for its avant-garde patterns and wild colors, so much so that the company caught the eye of brilliant footwear entrepreneur and founder of the international sports shoe brand Hi-Tec, Frank van Wezel, who had been developing golf shoes for golfing legends like Ian Woosnam, Padraig Harringron, Tony Jacklin and Laura Davis. The Cosma collection with its state-of-the-art styling and fit would complement van Wezel’s work with these golfing greats. He and his wife Caroline van Wezel purchased Duca del Cosma in 2016 with the contingency that Mattiazzo would remain

on board as their lead designer. Together, they and Duca del Cosma would continue to lead the fashion evolution. According to van Wezel, “We always want to remain at the forefront of fashion and technology, to continue to lead the fashion evolution in golf. That is why it was important for Baldovino to stay with the company when we purchased it.” To produce golf shoes worthy of the Duca del Cosma name, the company only will use leather from the absolute best tanneries, implement superior construction, soft linings, and outsoles from durable rubber compounds. They pride themselves on their attention to details, firstclass cotton shoelaces, and on-point trend colors to make an outstanding product and statement both on and off the golf course. Duca del Cosma has received countless awards for it breakthrough designs which include the first spikeless golf shoe with its nonslip outsole that can be worn on the course and look fashionable off the course, as well. The company is a repeat recipient of the highly sought after Golf Digest, Golf Magazine, Golf Week/USA Today, and Golf Monthly award for the “Best Golf Shoes for Men and Women.” This year, the brand celebrated 20 years of Italian heritage at the 2024 PGA Show in Orlando, Florida, where customers, media, and team Duca all rallied to observe this special milestone. Additionally, Mattiazzo designed an anniversary shoe with the introduction of a new lightweight Airplay 15 outsole, tested in collaboration with Tour stars Joost Luiten and Kelly Tan on several designs, including the limitededition JUBILEE and ALANA anniversary styles. The Duca del Cosma brand is available in forty eight countries. As the company continues to grow, they want to ensure their shoes are available to golfers worldwide, both in stores and retails. Owner and Chairman Frank van Wezel encourages any suggestions to be sent directly to Frank@ducadelcosma. com. For more information, please visit www.ducadelcosma.us. 36

NEW CLUBS FOR THE NEW SEASON By ED TRAVIS or avid golfers this time of year is special, maybe as much as the first round each season if the weather has made play unplayable. It’s the time when club equipment companies introduce their latest, often at the PGA Show and anticipating the new season and the staff of California Golf + Travel has reviewed the dozens of offerings to find a few we found significant. Here they are with a brief description so you can check them out yourself and remember being properly fit for new clubs is really an investment in your future enjoyment of them.

F

Cobra Darkspeed Driver Cobra used artificial intelligence programming to design the face of the game-improvement category Darkspeed X and Max drivers plus the better player Darkspeed LS (Low Spin) model. All have a slicker shape to decrease the amount of aerodynamic drag on the downswing and have adjustable hosels as well as sole weights to modify ball trajectory bias. Each model retails for $549. cobragolf.com

Cleveland Halo XL Full Face Irons These hollow head irons are targeted for use by higher handicap players looking for very forgiving, easy-tohit irons that look like mini-woods—more confidence means more good shots. The face is 20% larger with lots of flexing at impact with the ball which means more distance and the weight is pushed to the outside of the head for more stability. A seven-iron set with graphite shafts $1000 or steel shafts $900 us.dunlopsports.com

Srixon Q Star Tour Recreational players with driver swing speeds over 75 mph looking for a tour-type ball without the higher price should evaluate the Q-Star Tour from Srixon. It is a three-layer ball with a thin (just 0.5mm) urethane cover with 338 dimples featuring a friction coating called Spin Skin to give more control on shot shots. The core has been reformulated to increase the compression a little for increased distance. Priced at $40 per dozen. us.dunlopsports.com

Ping Blueprint S and T Irons The Blueprint irons from Ping are for better players, those looking for performance at the highest level. The S model is a cavity back distance iron offering forgiveness in the lower lofts and the T model is a traditional blade, less forgiving with lower flight flatter trajectory. Stock lofts are the same so combination sets are possible such as Blueprint S long irons and Blueprint T mid and short irons. $1610 steel shafts, $1715 graphite ping.com

Honma Beres Nx Driver The Beres Nx is a game-improvement driver designed for players in the 6- to 30-handicap range. The carbon fiber crown in a cross-pattern redistributing weight for added strength and performance and the face is an L-Cup without any welding giving extra rebound at impact. The sole features both a wide slot to improve ball initial velocity and a 12g rear weight. The adjustable hosel uniquely does require shaft rotation. $750 us.honmagolf.com

Titleist TruFeel & Tour Soft Golf Balls Titleist is the largest golf ball maker and in addition to the models played by professionals such as the Pro V1 they offer other models for recreational play. The TruFeel has two-layers with ionomer cover and is priced at $25 per dozen in white, yellow or matte red. TaylorMade Qi10 Drivers The Qi10 Max driver has an extremely high resistance to twisting or MOI making it one that can help any recreational player. Less twisting at impact means more ball speed is preserved therefore more distance and more particularly the straighter the tee shot. Besides the Max ($600) the Qi10 family includes the Qi10 ($600) and the Qi10 LS ($630) as well as a Qi10 Max HL build for slower swing speeds also priced at $600. taylormadegolf.com

Callaway Golf Paradym Ai Smoke Driver Last year’s Paradym was the bestselling driver and for 2024 Callaway made even more extensive use of AI for the Paradym Ai Smoke with the analysis of data from more than 250,000 golfers covering swing speed, club delivery angle, attack angle and face orientation prior to impact. Four models Paradym Ai Smoke MAX, MAX D, MAX Fast and Triple Diamond. The price is the same for all of them at $600 each. callawaygolf.com

Wilson Staff Model Blades and CB Irons The iconic Wilson Staff brand has a new Blades and CB model for 2024. Forged from 8620 carbon steel with a milled face they were crafted in conjunction with the players Wilson sponsors on Tour. The CB cavity backs are more forgiving, something even the best players find helpful. The two models have the same lofts and appearance at address, so a mixed set is possible. A set of 4-iron through pitching wedge is $1,200. wilson.com

Tour Edge Hot Launch C524 & E524 Drivers For the new year Tour Edge continues to make clubs packed with the latest technology at golfer-friendly prices. POWER, GRACE AND BALANCE By JOHN BURCKLE Photos MICHAEL WEINSTEIN atching Rory McIlroy hit a driver is so magical for most of us golfers. Not only does his swing seem effortless but the power he produces is even more astonishing. Even though he’s in great shape, he doesn’t have the size of a long drive competitor but effortlessly hits drives over 300 yards. Let’s look at Rory’s swing and see what makes him so special. In photo 1, the shoulders, arms, and club working in sequence on the takeaway with nice extension. The club is setting( hinging) without tension. If you were to draw a line from the ball to the shaft he’s right on plane. As he continues his backswing in photo 2, notice how his legs, hips, and feet haven’t moved much compared to his shoulders, arms and club which continue to turn and he maintains his width by not letting his arms collapse at the top. In photo 3, notice the left arm and club face at the top of the backswing are parallel to each other and in perfect alignment. His incredible shoulder turn and restricted lower body stores his power.

Now, as Rory starts his down swing, one of his signature moves is he sits or squats. You can really see this in photos 3 and 4. This is a power move for Rory. As he gets to impact you can see his legs extend upward as he delivers the club to the ball (photo 5) This helps him use ground forces to produce power. Another signature move for Rory. With all the speed and power, my favorite thing about Rory’s swing is his ability to look effortless and completely in balance at the finish (photo 6) Rory’s swing is something every golfer should watch. Power, grace and balance.

xander’s swing By JOHN BURCKLE Photo MICHAEL WEINSTEIN A great way to improve your swing is to learn from the best players in the world. With the help of his father Stefan, Xander Schauffele has built one of the best swings on tour. In this photo of Xander at the completion of his backswing, notice his full 90 degree shoulder turn while getting his head behind the ball without swaying his lower body. To achieve this position you need to use your hips and feet correctly. Notice how Xander’s right hip is inside his back foot and his right leg is balanced and supporting his weight. His legs are stable and balanced. To get to this position you need to learn a few things. As you start your backswing, teach your right hip to turn behind you. Most amateurs sway the hips moving the weight to the outside edge of the back foot, which compromises balance and restricts the shoulders from turning properly behind the ball. Next step is to make sure to get your head and chest behind the ball. If you draw an imaginary line up from the ball at address your head should be behind the line so you only need to turn your right hip which will allow the shoulders to rotate properly and transfer weight into your athletic and balanced back leg. Learn how to use your shoulders and hips correctly and you’ll be off to a great start.

QUATTRO THEORY EXPERIENCE By MATT PALAFERRI Good day golfers and wine drinkers! I have found a fantastic new wine for you to try in 2024! I taste hundreds and hundreds of different wines every year. Some I really enjoy and some I like to taste and then pour for my friends who like sugar and mega purple in a glass. As for Quattro Theory, they only get some if I have a second bottle; and to be honest, if the Sauvignon Blanc is opened, or even chilling in one of the fridges, my wife can sniff it out and she drinks it before I can even tell her I have a few bottles. What makes these wines, ALL OF THEM so good?! Winemaker Landon Donley, the charismatic, down to earth winemaker of Quattro Theory, “wants to make wines that are balanced, complex and you can drink them right away upon release.” I, for one appreciate this as I’m not getting any younger and frankly, I don’t have the time or patience to wait and age wines. I buy them, and I want to drink them! The grapes comes from some quality vineyards in the Napa Valley. Younger vines. Older vines and vines that are juuuuuust right. When I first tasted the wines, I was blown away on how approachable the cab is. First vintage and Bam! Right away you knew this wine would age beautifully for several years (if you want to do that sort of thing) but is tasting amazing right out of the gate. I’ve had it with several different proteins and was perfect with them all. My friends are shocked that it doesn’t cost an arm and a leg either. Don’t get any ideas Landon and raise the prices. I’m not a huge California chard person, unless they are something super special which Landon’s Chardonnay is. He works with cool climate which drives the acidity and balance. Most California chards have 198% new oak (yes, I know that’s not possible, appreciate the sarcasm) and go through a malolactic fermentation, but this wine stays away from that. You can actually taste the fruit! Go figure. What a great concept for a Napa Chardonnay. Fruit, balance, acidity. Love it! If you don’t normally drink Chardonnay, I encourage you to find this one and give it a go. You wont be disappointed.

I always thought Sauvignon Blanc from California gets overlooked. Almost like a precursor to heavier, more tannic wines. Mr. Donley has made a very bad to the bone SB with some giddy up. You don’t find too much sauv Blanc being grown in Calistoga, from 30+ year old vines, but this wine is just that. With a touch of Semillon as well, this SB it tropical, acidic, medium on the palate with a long lingering finish of mango, green apple and white peach. Like I say, I can’t keep this wine in the house without my WAY better half finding it. Get it. You will keep going back for more.

I can’t wait to see what the future holds for Landon and Quattro Theory. I will be up to Napa soon and will be finding these wines at the Trinchero Family Estate to taste again and again.
