MEXICO’S NEWEST GOLF COURSE GREG NORMAN’S RANCHO SAN LUCAS GOLF CLUB

SAN DIEGO

By DAVE MCKIBBEN

By DAVE MCKIBBEN had accomplished the unimaginable—at least for me— reaching the green on a 510-yard hole in just two shots. But instead of lining up my treacherous 60-foot downhill eagle putt at Rancho San Lucas Golf Club, I was distracted by a magical scene playing out some 500 yards behind me in the Pacific Ocean, where two whales were breaching in unison just offshore. Suddenly, the comments made the night before by Greg Norman, designer of Los Cabos, Mexico’s newest golf course, made a whole lot of sense. “The challenge of this course is the beauty,” said Norman, a two-time British Open Champion and architect of 106 courses around the world. “It’s tough to get your mind off how beautiful it is and focus on the shot you have to hit.” Naturally, I wasn’t able to get back in the zone, three-putting the 8th hole but still managing a par on Rancho San Lucas’ most difficult hole. There were plenty more pleasant distractions along the way as the 7,200-yard layout wanders through massive windswept sand dunes, climbs through a cactus forest and finds its way back to the beach and sea on the final nine holes. The par-3 17th hole is the only island green in golf-rich Cabo.

Norman, known as “The Shark” in his playing days, began coming to Cabo 30 years ago from his native Australia to fish and dive, when just six weekly flights arrived here. Now, 550 weekly flights from 40 destinations land in this spot on the southern tip of the Baja Peninsula, known these days for its vibrant nightlife and its championship golf courses. With Rancho San Lucas and Costa Palmas opening this year, Cabo is home to 18 courses. The designers read like a Who’s Who in the game of golf—Jack Nicklaus, Tiger Woods, Davis Love, Tom Fazio, Robert Trent Jones, Tom Weiskopf and Norman. Golf may be the centerpiece of this 834-acre gated residential enclave, but it’s only part of the fun. Rancho San Lucas, one of seven Cabo resorts owned and operated by Solmar Hotel & Resorts, also features the luxurious Grand Solmar Hotel and the Residences at Rancho San Lucas, seven gourmet dining spots, an adults-only infinity pool, a massive saltwater lagoon, a kids’ pool with two waterslides, a seaside spa and 15 miles of jogging and biking trails. Rooms at the Grand Solmar start at $191 plus tax. Studios and one and two-bedroom suites all come with ocean views. The Mexican-themed suites include a full kitchen with marble counters, stainless steel appliances, Murphy beds, private terraces, sitting areas and flat-screen televisions. Two-bedroom penthouses at the Residences start at $682. Terraces in each suite offer expansive ocean views. For those who want to stay awhile longer, luxury beachfront homes at The Villas and Norman Estates are available for purchase at $650,000 to $7 million. Solmar Group Developer Francisco Bulnes isn’t a golfer and had never built a course on any one of his properties.

ccording to the unofficial state motto, “Everything is bigger in Texas.” If you talk the people who live there, many will tell you everything is better, too. While that’s not necessarily the case (we Californians are pretty bullish on our way of life, after all), exaggeration and embellishment also are bigger in “The Great State of Texas.” Texas covers an area of 262,000 square miles and is the biggest of the 48 contiguous U.S. states — only Alaska is larger geographically — and literally is getting bigger every day. It

was the fastest growing state numerically from 2017 to 2018 and features several of the fastest-growing metropolitan areas in the U.S. A lot of things are big in Texas, including Billy Bob’s in Fort Worth, the self-proclaimed “World’s Largest Honky-Tonk,” a 127,000-squarefoot bar with enough room for 6,000 patrons to guzzle beer and two-step on a given night. Texas is also home to “America’s Team,” the Dallas Cowboys, who play in the largest domed stadium in North America. Most of the nation’s biggest high school football stadiums also are in Texas. So are countless mouthwatering barbecue restaurants, some

est golf resorts in the country and the only waterfront golf resort in Texas. Horseshoe Bay Resort is a AAA-Four Diamond resort, located on scenic Lake LBJ about 45 miles west of Austin, that features four critically acclaimed golf courses and just completed a threeyear, $90 million renovation and construction project. The investment by ownership covered refurbishing of the guest rooms and common areas, renovation of the golf courses and facilities, as well as new dining experiences. In the past three years, all three of the Robert Trent Jones Sr.-designed resort courses – Slick Rock (established in 1972), Ram Rock (1981) and Apple Rock (1985) – were upgraded in an expansive $7.5 million restoration project, with Apple Rock becoming the last to reopen in July. In October, as if on cue, Horseshoe Bay Resort was named to GOLF Magazine’s first-ever ranking of the “Top 100 Resorts in North America.” A panel of industry experts, travel writers and readers rated resorts on golf experience, accommodations, service, food and ambience. Horseshoe Bay was selected in the “Family” category and received high marks as a “Buddies” destination. “We’re thrilled to be chosen for this honor by GOLF Magazine,” said Bryan Woodward, Horseshoe Bay Resort’s Managing Director. “We’ve made great investments in upgrading the resort

large enough to seat hundreds and some renowned for three-hour lines. Perhaps the popularity of the brisket and ribs being slow-cooked on monstrous open-pit barbecues in central Texas is a contributing factor, because the Austin metropolitan area has been the fastest-growing area in the U.S. for eight consecutive years among those with at least 1 million residents, according to U.S. Census Bureau estimates released in April. All of which is why it should be anything but a surprise that resort golf in the Austin area is bigger and better, too. Case in point: Horseshoe Bay Resort, a 7,000-acre property in Texas Hill Country, which is one of the larg-

ure, we all want to grip it and rip it. But if you watch any Tour pro on the range, he or she is likely to hit twice the amount of wedges than any other club. Depending on who you listen to, shots 100 yards and in can account for roughly 50 to 60 percent of our total score. Yet, many golfers get fit for their irons, their putter, and dial in their new adjustable driver, while few actually get fit for their wedges. “Time and again, we see golfers walk in, pull a wedge off the rack and head to the register without really considering the length, lie, shaft, or especially the bounce,” said Kevin Kahle, Cleveland Wedge Expert at the Roger Dunn Golf Shops Superstore in Santa Ana, Calif. “I don’t think golfers realize how important wedge play is and how it can affect their scores.” So where does the average golfer start? club head. Now, this isn’t to say the club head isn’t important, as it does make contact with the ball. But as club designers will tell you, the shaft is the engine of the golf club.

While the club head continues – and will continue – to see visible changes on a regular basis, shafts are just now starting to get their due for how they contribute to ball flight and overall club performance. There are four main factors in shaft design that contribute to ball flight and the overall performance of the club: The center of gravity of the head; the overall weight of the shaft; the kick point in the shaft; and, of course, most familiar to the average golfer is the flex of the shaft. So to find out what an average golfer needs to know about shafts and why the shaft even matters in the first place, we asked Roger Dunn Golf Shops Club Fitting Specialist Dan Kupfer how

major champions on the PGA Tour in recent years employed the long or belly putter en route to their victories. It does bear mentioning here that this rule is strictly for tournament play where USGA rules govern the event – including state and city championships as well as many club championships – but not for recreational play. So if you tend to sweat over 4-foot putts in competition, you are going to have to find a different instrument to get that little dimpled ball into that little round hole in the ground.

BALANCING ACT

I

f you’re looking for an alternative to the anchored putting style for yourself or someone on your holiday shopping list, here are three counterbalanced putters to consider:

ODYSSEY WORKS TANK CRUISER

ODYSSEY WORKS TANK CRUISER Feel meet roll. Roll meet feel. The new Odyssey Works Tank Cruiser putters marry these two putting keys in Odyssey’s most Tour-proven head shapes. The “Tank” puts added counterbalance weight in the head and adjustable weight in the grip to help achieve consistent feel and stability. For a quicker roll, the White Hot insert is paired with an ultra-thin stainless steel mesh to reduce skidding and get the ball into a “pure roll” faster. CLICK HERE to buy online.

TAYLORMADE DADDY LONG LEGS 2.0 At over 8,500 MOI, this Daddy Long Legs is without question the most stable putter ever created by TaylorMade. Why does this matter? Because high MOI gives you better distance control and direction on off-center hits. The stable 395-gram head paired with a longer counterbalanced grip helps you swing smoothly and on path, while a surlyn insert promotes soft-yet-solid feel. CLICK HERE to buy online.

TAYLORMADE DADDY LONG LEGS 2.0

SCOTTY CAMERON FUTURA X Scotty Cameron is leading the charge beyond long putters with the Futura X Dual Balance putters. Offering performance and feel, these putters are for players seeking the ultimate in easy alignment, stability, and forgiveness. Sporting 50 grams of extra weight inside the face and 50 more in the grip, this additional weight counterbalances the putter for a stable, repeatable stroke. CLICK HERE to buy online.

he original patent for the long or “belly” putter dates back to the earlyto mid-’60s. And now some 50-plus years later the era of the long putter may be officially dead. Or at the very least it’s on life support. That’s because as of January 1, the powers that be at the United States Golf Association have ruled that you will no longer be able to putt with any putter that is anchored in any way, shape, or form to your body. It’s a curious ruling to be sure, seeing as four

=One solution may be the new, longer counterbalanced putters on the market that have been popping up ever since the USGA’s announcement. The original idea behind the longer putter – whether anchored to your chest or stomach – was to help steady your stroke and facilitate a pendulum swinging action. By doing so, you would be swinging straight back and straight through to the hole. “The concept behind the longer counterbalanced putters, which are around 38 inches long, is the same,” said Rick Grewe, a club-fitCLICK ting expert specializing in putters at TO LEARN the Roger Dunn Golf Shops Superstore MORE ABOUT in Santa Ana, Calif. “More length and CHOOSING A more weight at each end of the putter PUTTER give it more overall weight, which can help steady the stroke.” There are many counterbalanced putter options to choose from, including models from Odyssey, Scotty Cameron, and TaylorMade. “Whether it’s a counterbalanced putter or simply not anchoring a long putter, a lot of people are going to have to figure out a different method of putting,” Grewe said. “Golfers are still deciding what they’re going to do, but we expect to see counterbalanced putter activity pick up after the ban officially goes into effect.”
