What Lights Your Fire? Advice from my mom by Tim Barry, CPRE, SDA • CPRS President Starting out this year as your President, I’m reminded of how I began working in parks and recreation in the 1970’s. Yes, that’s right, 1970’s! No, don’t stop reading, stay with me! Anyway, I followed my passions… playing sports and playing music. Growing up in Long Beach, I played sports and grew to love the competition, comradery and teamwork. While attending college, I also enjoyed coaching youth sports and umpiring. My brother Mike taught me to play the guitar in third grade while Beatlemania was in full swing. We dressed up in Beatle boots and bell bottom pants and idolized the Fab Four, playing their music and other 60’s tunes. I was in garage bands through high school, and was part of the folk rock church music craze at my local church and school. Music was a great way to meet new people and express myself in popular culture. Yes, we even played “Light My Fire,” especially the Doors version! In college, I thought I was winding my way toward being a writer or journalist, so my A.A. Degree is in Journalism. But then attending an Intro to Recreation course at Long Beach City College, I found out you could actually earn a living by organizing recreation activities in communities, like sports and music! Wow, I hit pay dirt! Through college, I worked as a Recreation Leader, Tennis Instructor, Teen Center Leader, Camp Counselor, and Volunteer Coordinator, while continuing to coach youth baseball. Those experiences, and the crack Recreation Administration B.A. program at Long

Beach State, prepared me well for my full-time career. I was able to keep my passions intact this whole time, sports and music, and they’ve served me well in all of my work experiences. W h a t “ L i g h t s Yo u r Fire?” Have you incorporated your passions and special skills into your work life? Have you found the right type of work that keeps you engaged in your passions? There is a quote from Buddha that says, “Success is not the key to happiness, happiness is the key to success. If you love what you are doing, you will be successful.” I believe in what Buddha is saying here. So much so, that this saying is hanging right outside my office so my staff get a feel for my philosophy of work. Incorporate your passions into your work. Bring to the job what “lights your fire.” I’ve been

To tackle the challenge of competing interests in recreation and parks programming stratified by age and generations, the City of Beverly Hills Human Relations Commission Chair Rochelle Ginsburg developed an innovative solution to bring Beverly Hills together, inspire appreciation for diversity and spark conversations among people of all ages, backgrounds, and ethnicities. To this end, Rochelle produced her most significant contribution to the City of Beverly Hills, a first-of-its-kind community reading campaign called “One Book, One City”. Through a creative collaboration between three Beverly Hills organizations, the Human Relations Commission, the City Library and the Berverly Hills Unified School District, she brought together disconnected generations through a city-wide reading program. The program’s success in uniting generations throughout the City.

Fellowship/Hall of Fame Award

CPRS’ Fellowship/Hall of Fame recognizes outstanding contributions in an individual’s career and in their leadership in the profession of parks and recreation. Karen McNamara’s career in parks and recreation began in college while working as a part-time coordinator for the City of Union City. After receiving her BS degree, Karen secured a full time position as Recreation Supervisor for the City of Milpitas (1983-89) which led her to the position of Community Services Manager for the City of San Ramon (1989-2000). She then served as Director of Parks & Community Services for the City of Tracy (2000 to 2005). She returned to San Ramon in 2005 as the Director of Public Works and since 2010 she also serves as the interim Director of Parks & Community Services. In her various leadership positions she: 16

• led the construction of a Senior Center • established the San Ramon’s Aquatics Program through the development of a joint use agreement • developed a Youth Resource Program - a cooperative between the Parks and Community Services Department, the Police Department and the San Ramon Valley School District • launched the City of Tracy’s first fixed route transit service • led another Youth Collaborative comprised of 23 youth/teen serving organizations • developed the City of Tracy’s Airport’s Strategic Plan; a Recreation Program Needs Assessment; an Aquatics Center Master Plan; and an Enhanced Diversion & Recycling Plan • successfully reversed the Airport’s negative cash flow operations and established a financial plan for its debt repayment • developed a Public Services Leadership Academy • designed & constructed the Dougherty Valley Service Center • secured a grant to design and build a universally accessible playground

leen and Jim, through their leadership, also created the “Winter in Willmore,” which provides families with a snow slide, music, food, and donations to Food Finders. Kathleen and Jim with WCHA are continuing their good works by planning to connect two downtown parks to add green space and bike path connectivity.

Karen has proven herself again and again as an agency leader through her accomplishments. McNamara has held many leadership positions within CPRS starting at the District level and moving up to the State Board of Directors where she served as a Regional Representative and subsequently Vice President, President-elect and President. It was during her tenure as Vice President and President that McNamara established herself as a visionary leader. Recognizing that an agency’s impact in the community was at the hands of elected officials or administrators, she presented to the State Board of Directors a strategic planning process for CPRS to conduct on behalf of the profession. Her vision was to create a strategic plan to guarantee the profession’s success in the future. Funding for the plan was approved by

Since its approval by the State Board of Directors in 2000, the Creating Community Strategic Action Plan has been utilized by hundreds of agencies in California and it has been adopted by several other states as a model (South Carolina, Oregon, and Michigan as examples). Karen served as the Chair of the 1999 CA & Pacific Southwest Recreation & Park Training Conference. Her conference leadership continued as she served as Chair of the Conference Program Committee in 2003. The Program Committee is responsible for developing over 100 educational sessions offered over a three-day period. Karen was called back into “action” in 2007-08 to lead the re-invigoration of the Society’s Park Operations Section which had lost its leadership and momentum. Karen served as interim

CPRS Student Members Receive Award Scholarships Each year the California Foundation for Parks & Recreation awards scholarships to deserving students who are studying in the parks, recreation and tourism areas. Scholarships are awarded based on six overall criteria including: academic scholarship, professional affiliations, activity and need. At the 2015 CPRS Annual Conference, 12 scholarships ranging from $500 - $2,000 were awarded to:

Melissa Z. Kannas Memorial Scholarship

Mylissa Magallanes is the recipient of the Melissa Z. Kannas Memorial Scholarship Magallanes is a student at San Diego State majoring in Recreation Tourism Management. Magallanes is active on campus as the volunteer coordinator of the Recreation Tourism Student Association and in a number of roles with the Alpha Phi Omega – Co-Ed Community Service Fraternity. She has worked with the City of San Diego Park and Recreation Department in the therapeutic recreation services section and with the Mission Valley YMCA as a swim instructor. Magallanes has also volunteered with the Camp Adventure Youth Services and Lakeside Teen Center.

CPRS Past Presidents Scholarship

Two CPRS Past President scholarships were awarded to Camber Corron and Martha Ortiz. Camber Corron is a student at California State University, Chico majoring in Recreation Therapy. She is a very involved individual: she was the second lead on the Book-in-Common Committee; she’s the lead on the Poverty Simulation event; and she’s a volunteer with the Little Red Hen nursery where she worked with individuals with cognitive disabilities. These are only a few of Corron’s experiences. When asked “what qualities should

20

park and recreation professionals possess to better enhance the quality of life in their communities,” Corron identified teamwork, communication skills and organization. Speaking specifically about organization in her essay, she wrote “Organization is essential; without organization, it is just chaos. Programs will be messy, with missing parts or difficult to understand if there is no organization.” The recipient of the second CPRS Past Presidents scholarship is Martha Ortiz. Ortiz is a student at San Jose State University majoring a Recreation Therapy. She served as a student liaison for the Bay Area Therapeutic Recreation Association and as President and Vice President of the San Jose State University Recreation Therapy Association. Once she began to learn about Recreation Therapy and the benefits recreation and leisure provide in aiding a person’s overall quality of life, Ortiz became an advocate in the field. Ortiz believes that in order to enhance the quality of life in a community, Park and Recreation professionals must first believe in the importance of park and recreation programs. Unity Day By Stacey Kennison Recreation Coordinator City of Newark

Never in a million years did I imagine I would be talking with my sweet, kind and incredibly unique insect-loving daughter about bullying. I definitely did not think I would have that talk when she was only in first grade. But I did.

Unity Day u As I was getting my 6 year old ready for her bath one evening, I noticed she was favoring her knees and elbow. I asked her what was wrong and she looked up at me with her big hazel eyes and quietly said, “Mommy, please don’t let Daddy and Sissy see.” I was instantly on high alert wondering what on earth happened to my little girl to make her say that. I asked her again what had happened and reluctantly she told me. In her after school program a group of boys were chasing her and calling her names. She was running away from them when she tripped and fell, scraping her knees and elbow. I asked her why they were chasing her. She explained how she had worked hard that afternoon making a bug habitat and collecting rolly pollies (her favorite bug). The boys were chasing her trying to get it away from her and kill them.

• Students who are bullied are more likely to do poorly in school, to have low esteem, become depressed, and to have increased sleep and anxiety issues (pacer.org/bullying).

I

• According to SAVE, Suicide Awareness Voices for Education (2014), 1 in 65,000 children ages 10-14 commit suicide each year as a direct result of bullying.

n that moment, my first thought was how sad (and angry, and disappointed, and helpless) I felt for my little girl. She had been teased, chased, and injured by some boys who were being mean just to be mean. She had done nothing to deserve what had happened except express her love for bugs and nature at school. When they found out what happened, the recreation leaders did put the boys on a time out, but my daughter had gotten hurt and unfortunately, had her first experience with bullying. My daughter’s experience and thousands much worse happen to children every day around the country. Bullying can affect anyone from the most outgoing to the most quiet. It does not discriminate and does immeasurable damage to those affected. We hear statements like “Kids will be kids” and pass it off like being cruel and insensi-

40

tive to another is a childhood rite of passage. That could not be further from the truth. Bullying is a very real and very serious problem. It comes in many forms from physical and psychological abuse to cyber-bullying and can be based on many things including weight, race, disabilities, religion, and sexual orientation. It is a devastating form of abuse that can have damaging, long-term effects on our children. Statistics set the scene of how common bullying is and how tragic its effects are on children. • Over 3.2 million students report being victims of bullying each year (Dosomething.org, 11 Facts About Bullying, 2014). • 160,000 children miss school every day because they are scared of being bullied (National Education Association, 2014).

• 85% of LGBT youth reported experiencing some form of bullying or harassment at school (Zweig, Dank, Lachman & Yahner, 2013). • Studies also found that children with disabilities were two to three times more likely to be bullied than those without disabilities (Marshall, Kendall, Banks & Gover (Eds.), 2009).

These statistics show that bullying is not just an issue of “kids being kids” anymore, and it is not going to go away. Something has to be done to teach children that it is NOT okay to harm others or treat them with disrespect. As recreation professionals we want our programs to foster a safe and nurturing environment where passion and curiosity are ignited in children. We want our programs to be a place where every student can have a safe and comfortable learning environment. That cannot happen if a child is too afraid to even come to the program for fear of being teased, chased, hurt and tormented. We need to stand up against bullying in our cities, communities, schools and recreation centers – everywhere kids are. The City of Newark Recreation and Community Services Department is taking this responsibility head on and taking a stand against bullying. On Wednesday, October 21, 2015, we will stand together and unite against bullying by hosting a city-wide event called “Unity Day”. This day was first introduced by Pacer’s National Bullying Prevention Center in 2011 (www.pacer.org/bullying) and it has been growing in popularity ever since. Unity Day is a day where communities and schools all over the country, and now the City of Newark, will wear orange and send a message of hope and unity to show that we are united to stop bullying. u Unity Day employees will wear orange wristbands showing we are united against bullying in our facilities, programs, and our community. Wearing orange is only the first step of what we are doing in Newark. We took this on as a multi-layered approach from doing something small within our own facility and department, leading up to something on a larger city/community wide scale. We are very fortunate to have full support of our City Manager and the City Council for this event. Newark’s City Manager, John Becker stated, “It is critical that the City of Newark take a proactive approach to the issue of bullying and foster an atmosphere for our youth that is safe and supportive. We want to stand up for kindness, acceptance, and inclusion in our community”. Becker goes on to say, “Our City’s participation in “Unity Day” provides us with a special opportunity to reach out to the youth in our community to address this important issue. I am proud of the efforts of our Recreation and Community Services Department in taking the lead in facilitating this program.” The City Manager’s support was critical in order to get the rest of the City’s departments on board with this event. Newark’s City Council mirror Becker’s sentiment as our Mayor, Al Nagy will be issuing a proclamation that “October is Anti-Bullying Awareness Month”. They too, will be wearing the orange wristbands. Recreation Coordinators Stacey Kenison and Nick Cuevas will be in the classroom on Unity Day leading anti-bullying talks to over 125 preschool aged children in Newark’s preschool and licensed childcare programs, promoting a message of kindness, friendship and standing up for others. Sr. Recreation Supervisor, Karen Moraida, who oversees Childcare and Preschool programs in Newark states, “This program is a wonderful opportunity to raise awareness of bullying to young children. The earlier we can share the harmful effects of bullying the better prepared our children will be to handle its negative consequences.” Resources will be available to parents on how to talk about bullying to their children

Unity Day u and what to do if their child is being bullied or IS the bully. The Newark Police Department will not only be sporting orange on Unity Day, but volunteered to wear orange wristbands the whole month of October to raise bullying awareness. We are working with the Newark Unified School District and the Joint City School Liaison Committee, a group of City of Newark and Newark Unified School District staff, to develop a program for Newark’s elementary schools on Unity Day. Getting the word out on social media is also important as we plan to launch a Unity Day campaign on Facebook. We will be asking for members of our community to send us photos of them wearing orange to support our anti-bullying efforts that we can post throughout the day. We are getting more support of this effort each week as we reach out to external organizations in our community. Our hope would be to have not only our recreation centers, City offices and staff wearing orange, but

You can show the film “Bully” in your teen center and encourage all the teens to take an anti-bullying pledge. Or you can do something more. What that “more” is depends on you. Nick Cuevas, Recreation Coordinator for the City of Newark says, “As recreation professionals we have a duty to intervene in these situations. We spend so much time with these kids, and we get to know them on a different level than simply a participant. It is our responsibility to teach them about being kind to each other and the consequences of bullying.” The Newark Recreation and Community Services Department’s hope is to get city wide support for all to unite against bullying. My hope, as a recreation professional and as a mom, is for my daughter, and for all children to never have to experience physical or emotional injury just for being a little different, just for loving what they love, just for being themselves. To find out what you can do to promote anti-bullying efforts in your agency, contact Stacey Kenison, Recreation Coordinator for the City of Newark, or visit pacer.org/bullying for more information and ideas about “Unity Day”.

California Aquatic Management School Celebrates its 15th Anniversary

T By Beth Fraser xxxxx Cosumnes Community Services District

46

he California Aquatic Management School (CAMS) was formed in 2001 by a group of dedicated CPRS Aquatics Section leaders with a vision to conduct a premiere training for aquatic professionals. Every year since 2001, aquatic professionals from all over the state gather for a 3-day experience like no other conference ever experienced. The unique thing about CAMS is that it is a school focused on aquatics but still beneficial to anyone, at any level that works at a facility with swimming amenities. Nationally recognized speakers discuss topics such as legislation, staff training, staff performance, emergency preparation, aquatic hot topics and so much more. CAMS also offers experiences such as group dinning that will increase your network of contacts and create long-lasting friendships.

This year marks CAMS’ 15th anniversary and it will be held in beautiful Lake Tahoe at the Granlibakken Conference Center from October 7-October 9. CAMS is an all-inclusive conference, which means all meals and lodging are included in the school registration. All sessions and socials are held on-site as well, so once you arrive at Granlibakken you can focus on enjoying all the educational sessions and socials without the hassle of traveling or worrying about meals. CAMS is excited to announce an amazing keynote speaker, Marilyn Sherman! Marilyn has spent years motivating and inspiring audiences to get out of their comfort zone and get a front-row seat in life. After starting her career in corporate America, she is now seen as the go-to motivational keynote speaker for corporate and association markets that want their people

SPRING 2015 • CALIFORNIA PARKS & RECREATION

to improve their morale, teamwork, and communication skills and ultimately achieve more results. With her background as a training officer for a major finance company, Marilyn honed her skills to motivate audiences who are often hard to motivate. With her engaging, and fun personality, Marilyn connects with her audiences and delivers content that they can immediately use when they get back to their office. She officially received road warrior status after delivering six-hour professional development seminars up to 5 cities a week up to three weeks a month for five years! You can see more about Marilyn at http://www.thestandardovation.com/marilyn_sherman.html.

The CAMS committee is very excited to have Marilyn start CAMS off. Not only will she be the Keynote on Wednesday evening, but she will also be leading a session Thursday morning. The CAMS committee is currently reviewing a generous amount of session proposals from all over the US and will be releasing the final speaker lineup by early June. As an attendee you can expect to hear at least six different

session topics by different presenters over the course of the three days. Want to attend CAMS but cannot afford the registration out of your program budget? CPRS Aquatics and many local pool operator groups offer scholarships for qualified applicants. Keep your eyes open for announcements over the next couple of months or contact the CPRS Aquatics Section President Beth Frazer at bethfrazer@csdparks.com. CAMS would not be possible without the help of the sponsors who support and dedicate their energy to helping the aquatics profession. This year CAMS has already lined up amazing sponsors including Lincoln Equipment as a Presenting Sponsor hosting the Welcome Reception and Spectrum Aquatics and Colorado Time Systems as a Presenting Sponsor hosting the Closing Reception. Registration for CAMS is currently open and will take place through August 28, as long as space is still available. The CAMS committee encourages early registration and provides a discounted rate to attendees who register prior to July 31. The full program brochure is available at http://www. cprs.org/user_media/ pdfs/CAMS_Brochure.pdf and on-line registration is available at www.cprsmembers. org. If you have any questions regarding CAMS please feel free to contact the CAMS chairs Jill Wynn at jwynn@ci.benicia.ca.us or Jennie Tucker at jennie.tucker@morganhill.ca.gov

Accomplishments Mill Valley’s Community Center Manager to Retire After Three Decades

Carlene McCart remembers reviewing - and agonizing - over Stuart Kesler’s application for a recreation program coordinator job with the City of Mill Valley in 1985. On one hand, there were candidates easily more qualified than Kesler, the Santa Rosa kid who’d just graduated from California State University-Chico. On the other hand, McCart, then the City of Mill Valley’s Superintendent of Parks and Recreation, had a “gut reaction” that this guy was the perfect fit for her tiny, all-hands-on-deck department. “He was by far the most willing potential employee I have ever seen,” McCart says. “He was sincerely willing to do it all. We were doing everything then, from going out when sprinkler heads broke to putting together all the day camps and childcare and senior events. We needed somebody who’d be able to do anything - grab a plunger, help a senior, whatever it took.” McCart went with her 64

gut, and 30 years later, Kesler is now retired from the City of Mill Valley. His last day as Community Center Manager was April 24. “Stuart’s career with the City of Mill Valley represents the epitome of small town service and dedication,” City Manager Jim McCann said. “He is a sincere, compassionate, and a true believer in the Recreation motto of ‘Parks Make Life Better!’” “Stuart is a consummate professional in the recreation business,” Recreation Director Jenny Rogers says. “He’s been an amazing mentor for generations of staff that have come through the doors here at the Community Center. When you want to sit with the Buddha, you go sit in Stuart’s office.” “Stuart takes advantage of every teachable moment,” adds Recreation Supervisor Patty McCulley, who has worked with Kesler for 15 years. “He is creative and always finds a way to make the most mundane of meetings or trainings fun. Stuart is the Recreation Jedi Master, teaching the young Recreation staff how to use The Force and be strong leaders, how to serve the clients well, how to make solid decisions and how to be a positive representative

of the City and the Recreation Department.” Kesler says he doesn’t take for granted being able to stay with one City for his entire career. “I feel incredibly fortunate that I was able to start and end my career in Mill Valley,” Kesler says. “The opportunity the City gave me to grow with the department - it’s just amazing.”

Kevin Miller Selected to Succeed Jim Hardy as City Manager of Foster City

The City of Foster City City Council is pleased to announce that Kevin Miller has been selected as the new City Manager, effective July 1, 2015, upon the retirement of Jim Hardy. Miller has been with the City of Foster City for 29 years and has served in municipal government for 34 years. Prior to his employment with the City of Foster City he worked for the Conejo Recreation and Park District in Thousand Oaks, California. Miller holds a bachelor’s degree in Parks and Recreation Administration from California State University at Chico. He has served in many professional leadership positions including state president of the California Park & Recreation Society in 2002. Mayor Art Kiesel indicated that “Kevin has provided consistent, visionary leadership as the City of Foster City’s Director of Parks and Recreation for the past 22 years. In that role, he has been responsible for the management and oversight of the parks,

recreation, and building and vehicle fleet operations for the City. During Kevin’s tenure as the Director of Parks and Recreation he is credited with creating one of the most dynamic parks and recreation systems in San Mateo County. The City’s Parks and Recreation team, under Kevin’s leadership, has created beautiful and diverse parks with first-rate recreation programing and special events throughout the year. This vision has contributed to Foster City being known as a “Great Place to Live, Work and Play.” Kevin Miller stated “I am honored and excited for this opportunity. I will bring to this position my passion for community service with a goal of continuing to provide excellent service to the residents of Foster City, our businesses and community partners. This City has a proud tradition of visionary City Councils, great City Managers, and incomparable City employees, all committed and dedicated to the delivery of excellent customer service. I look forward to leading the Foster City team as we maintain and improve upon that service level.”

u Spotlight Director Kevin Miller when he becomes Foster City’s next City Manager on July 1, 2015. Liu has been employed by the City of Foster City since 2005, starting as Recreation Coordinator for Senior and Volunteer Programs and then serving as Recreation Manager beginning in April 2007. Liu holds a Bachelor’s Degree in Kinesiology from Cal Poly San Luis Obispo and a Master’s Degree in Recreation from San Francisco State University. Jennifer started her career in the small corporate fitness niche and then came to Foster City with a strong passion to contribute on a larger scale and to serve others and make a difference in her community. “Foster City is unique, and its Parks and Recreation Department is visionary. It is my intention to build on the Department’s tradition of excellence, service to the community, integrity, passion, teamwork, and vigor,” said Liu. “It is a privilege and honor to work with dedicated staff in a dynamic Department.” The Parks and Recreation Department builds and creates community through people, parks and programs through its four divisions: Parks, Recreation, Building Maintenance and Vehicle Maintenance. The Director oversees 36 full-time staff and 24 full-time equivalent part time employees who maintain the City’s 24 beautiful parks, offer programs for all ages, coordinate 50 special events per year and maintain the City’s 86 vehicles and

225,000 square feet of facilities. Incoming City Manager Kevin Miller stated, “I have the utmost confidence that Jennifer, as the next Director of Parks and Recreation, will continue the tradition of excellence that has been the hallmark of Parks and Recreation in Foster City. Jennifer has a passion for the profession and community service and her leadership as Director will assure that our citizens continue to receive excellent public service every day, every contact, every call.” www.montereyherald.com/environment-and-nature/20150302/fornew-parks-chief-monterey-countylooks-to-los-angeles

For new parks chief, Monterey County looks to Los Angeles

“It gives me the opportunity to manage what I love,” Mariscal said. Mariscal is one of four operations managers in LA’s parks department, overseeing a diverse range of recreation opportunities, including the Cabrillo Marine Museum — the only free Association of Zoos & Aquariumsaccredited aquarium in the U.S. That museum has stayed free with the help of a community support group, something LA uses to expand leisure and recreation opportunities. While the city works with several nonprofits, the Los Angeles Parks Foundation alone raised more than $3 million in 2013 for local parks. “Those types of ar-

rangements are critical in an era where public dollars seem to be shrinking,” Mariscal said. “Government can’t operate every public acre themselves. It takes the community to join in, maybe some other organizations to join in,” Mariscal said. Mariscal also said he’s written successful grants to acquire and expand open space, which can be difficult in a dense city with nearly 4 million residents. He praised the reinvigorated Monterey County Parks and Recreation Commission, and urged the public to comment on the recently-released draft of a new strategic plan for the department, which calls on new plans for each county park.

By Jason Hoppin, Monterey County Herald POSTED: 03/02/15, 4:31 PM

To help push its financially troubled parks department forward, Monterey County is turning to an unusual place — urban Los Angeles. Mark Mariscal, 55, a superintendant of operations for the city of Los Angeles’ parks department and the immediate past president of the California Park & Recreation Society, assumed the top parks post in Monterey County on March 23. He takes over a department that operates eight parks facilities — several of them remotely located — offering everything from camping to hiking to horseback riding. He said the job offers him a chance to assume a leadership post and open up recreation opportunities for residents.

Kathie Luecker Vice President of Lincoln Aquatics Passes Away

Katherine Z. Luecker, Vice President of Lincoln Aquatics of Concord, California passed away January 27, 2015 after a year-long battle with Ovarian Cancer. She was 55 years old. Kathie was a prominent figure in the Aquatics community for over 32 years. Her passion for Aquatics was evident by her vision for products to help pool operators, her fun loving personality extended not only to customers, product manufacturers, swimming pool designers, and to competitors alike. Kathie and her brother Charlie purchased Lincoln Aquatics in 1987 from their father William Luecker. In 2006, they also acquired the Southern California branch of Lincoln operated by their uncle, Ed Little. In 2014, the company celebrated its 60th Anniversary. Kathie was a graduate of Oregon State University (1983) and first started her career at Lincoln as a Regional Sales Manager, where she was responsible for the Pacific Northwest region (1983- 2000). She then moved to the corporate office in Concord, CA as Vice President (2000-2015). Kathie enjoyed immensely her 66

contact with customers, whether on a pool deck or at a trade show. She was a great listener and took the time to take note of each customer’s needs, tips they had for products, and for the overall improvement of the Aquatics industry. A major accomplishment that made Kathie very proud was her involvement as one of the founding members of the Association of Aquatic Professionals (AOAP). This Association is the premier professional group dedicated to the Commercial Pool Operator and Aquatic Professional. This association was founded in 2011 and continues to grow and serve the Aquatic community. Kathie also participated in many Aquatic groups associated with the National Park & Recreation Association, state level Parks & Recreation Associations across the country, the World Water Park Association, and the International Health & Racquet Sports Association (IHRSA), among others. In 2011, Kathie was presented the Industry Leadership Award by the World Water Park Association. Kathie is survived by her brother Charlie Luecker, his wife Laurie Luecker, nephews Geoffrey Luecker (Stephani), Michael Luecker, Jason Luecker (Kayla), and Brandon Luecker.

Presidents Message, continued from page 6 able to do that, and I feel very fortunate. I love what I do every day, love the people I work with, and have incorporated my interests into my work, sometimes testing the tolerance of my staff and colleagues! Lastly, my mom recently passed away at the age of 95, surrounded by her loving family. If you’ve been through this, you know the difficulties you have and the feelings of loss and regret that often accompany such a life event. However, I’m not feeling as much of that loss and regret as I thought I would. We were so blessed to have her on this earth for so long! And to our delight, once she made the difficult transition from independent living to her new home in assisted living, she aged so beautifully, gracefully, and enjoyed every day, still trying to be of service to her fellow “inmates” in the assisted living facility where she lived. The recreation and social activities at her facility played no small role in her successful transition and ongoing care there. I was able to experience therapeutic recreation from the perspective of a family member of a client, and was so impressed with the positive impact it had on my mom and the rest of the family. Hat’s off to my TR brethren in our multi-faceted parks and recreation profession! Mom was the writer in the family, and helped me with my English and Social Studies homework. Over the years, she wrote free-lance articles for the Sunday Magazine insert of the Long Beach PressTelegram. They were filled with optimism, passion and a love of life. When I was going through tough times growing up, mom would lovingly give me her famous piece of advice: “This too, shall pass, my son.” The pain of her loss has just about passed, and she taught me you can always get through tough times with the faith that something better is coming around the corner. When you have difficult times in your work, or professional doors to career advancement get slammed in your face, remember that “this too shall pass, my son.” My experience is that something better is in store for you around the corner and you have to keep on moving forward. And remember to stay in touch with what “lights your fire,” and somehow incorporate it into your work. As they say, you’ll never work another day in your life. It won’t feel like work at all! Thanks, mom.
