Hello CPRS Members! by Lydie Gutfeld • CPRS President
H
appy New Year! It is amazing to think that we are another year older, wiser and busier than ever. 2019 has been an adventure to say the least and as I write my last president’s message to you, I am filled with various emotions. Happiness. I am joyful to know that I have accomplished the goals I set for myself as a leader and also worked to help accomplish the goals of our state board and leaders of the 22 sections and districts. Sadness. My heart swells knowing that this life of CPRS State Board leadership ends soon, but I shed happy tears knowing that on March 11th, I pass the torch onto Tara Gee and her amazing new board of directors. Excitement. I know conference is going to be inspiring and motivating and I will enjoy celebrating everyone’s accomplishments and also continue to see new leaders emerge. And finally, Admiration. Of my wonderful board leaders who have continuously stepped up to help me lead, for the mentors who have given me their time on so many occasions to provide guidance and support, and for my agency, the City of Mission Viejo, my director, Mark Nix, City Manager, Dennis Wilberg, and my unstoppable staff team of leaders who work tirelessly to ensure that when I was out on CPRS business, they held down the fort and allowed me to serve you all. To say it takes a village is an understatement. It takes commitment and dedication from so many to make a year successful, and I have benefited so much from the support you all have provided me. For this, I thank you and promise to forever be in your corner!
2019-2020 BOARD OF DIRECTORS
We are a great state with an impressive workforce of creative, innovative, and dedicated individuals who strive to provide amazing recreation opportunities to each community. These individuals are also the heartbeat of our organization and have been my driving force this year to lead the state board to achieve excellence in the membership experience for our over 4000 owners. Throughout my many years of service with this organization, I have always believed in the mission to advance the profession. Witnessing time and time again, many members experience a first training, develop a new idea, brainstorm with complete strangers, create friendships and find mentors. My all-time favorite moments though, have been watching our member accomplish a leadership goal. The #know1be1show1 movement and 30 under 30’s and 50 over 50’s were such a highlight this year and the acknowledgment we received from our members was excellent. These little snippets have been and continue to be my secret addiction. Hearing so many stories along the way of passion, dedication, goal setting and achieving, but also of failure has inspired me to continue believing in the profession and motivated me to continue giving my service to CPRS. This year, as I traveled across the state, positivity and impact continued to be seen as our section and district leaders were working hard to bring their membership a new opportunity to build network, to advance in the profession, or to bring people together to share ideas and trends, all with one goal in mind. To create better communities continued on page 56

WINTER 2020 • CALIFORNIA PARKS & RECREATION
Every year the Conference Education Committe works tirelessly to put together an education program that addresses the immediate and emerging needs of today’s park and recreation professionals. The selection process is always difficult as the quantity of proposals is generally double the available educational rooms available. Also, the high quality of submittal session proposals warrants that the committee spend significant time and effort in the evaluation process. Tuesday Intensives continues this year at conference with a strong variety of sessions for all: • Park Development and Operations Symposium • NAYS Youth Sports Administrators Academy • NRPA’s Commission to Accreditation of Parks and Recreation Agencies • Aquatics Intensive: Put the POWER in your POOL • Recreation Intensive: Leadership Survival Guide • Aging Services Intensive - Working with Older Adults: Present & Future A Thursday intensive will be offered by the Recreation Therapy Section for any attendees arriving early for the Friday Recreation Therapy Institute. The topic for the Thursday intensive is: Aggessioin Replacement Training Slowing it Down. Also returning to the educational program at Conference are the Special Features. This year’s theme is “Leadership Mindsets - Moving Through
2020.” The goal of the Special Features is for you to adopt a transformative leadership mindset at the conference which will help you advance leadership skill in both you and your team. Special Features include: • How They Did It: Getting Hired in the Recreation Profession • EXTREME Events: Building Community Resilience through Roleplay • Speed Coaching Plus • Recreation to Parks Administrator: Moving Through Management • Advocacy During Low Budget Cycles: Telling of Tales • Succession Planning: Part of Your Talent Management Strategies Growing in popularity are the RecTalk educational sessions taking place in the Expo Hall. These 10-15 talks are presented by professionals and academics and cover innovative programs, concepts or ideas in the parks and recreation field. RecTalks will happen on Thursday in University/Innovation Row. Check the conference app for speakers and topic times. Attendees will not want to miss the Conference Closing Keynote featuring Galen Emanuele. His topic is “Creating a ‘Yes, and’ Culture of High-Per formance, Engagement and Human Connection.” Through simple, skill-building activities, Galen will teach you how to create a cohesive “Yes, And” culture. The theme of “Connections” continues beyond the educational sessions. The Special Events team has created a slew of networking opportunities outside of the educational program.
CALIFORNIA PARKS & RECREATION • WINTER 2020
Your initial opportunities begin on Tuesday with the Parks Make Life Better! Tour and the CPRS Golf Tournament. The fun-filled tour will take you to visit award-winning parks and facilities. Some are new and others are remodeled, but all will inspire. The golf tournament returns to Skylinks Golf Course in Long Beach. The fourperson scramble golf tournament is a huge hit every year. At last year’s conference there was a record number of new conference attendees. The CPRS Rookies Meet Up helped them understand the ins-andouts of conference. If you are new to the conference make time on Wednesday morning, 8:15 - 9:15, to attend the Rookie Meet Up. Meet conference veterans, CPRS state board members and other conference newbies. The annual Welcome Reception will be at a new location in Long Beach. It will also have a new party activity... Silent Dance Party. If you have not participated in one before, you will not want to miss it: music, dancing, lights and lots of laughter. Other networking events returning to conference include the Wake Up Wellness activities, the CPRS Poker Pub Crawl and the CPRS Awards Program Reception and Banquet. New to the conference to help with your connections is the “Building Connections Program.” The idea is to connect students and young professionals with distinguished professionals from across the state. Connections will be made prior to conference with the idea that pairs will meet at conference for sharing of knowledge and guidance.

General Session Wednesday, March 11, 2020 9:45 a.m. – 11:45 a.m. Terrace Theater Opening Session with Matt Iseman “Life is short, do what makes you happy.” That’s the advice that Matt got from his Dad, a world renowned physician, when Matt quit medicine to pursue stand up comedy. And those words still guide Matt today. He talks ninjas, tells jokes around the world and, in general, proves laughter is the best medicine.
Perhaps best known as the host of the FOUR TIME Emmy nominated “American Ninja Warrior” and being named the newest Celebrity Apprentice, the Boston Globe has said of Matt, “The best part about American Ninja Warrior, hands down, is when bro-host Matt Iseman roars the show’s title.” He also helms the latest spinoff, American Ninja Warrior Junior, on Universal Kids (it’s their highest rated show ever) and he headed up the spinoff, “ANW: Ninja vs Ninja” on the USA Network. Matt hosted Evel Live and Evel Live 2 on History, the highest rated cable specials of 2018 and 2019 respectively and makes regular visits to the Today Show. Be prepared to laugh and enjoy the Opening General Session as Matt brings attendees a unique insight into our industry and how our CONNECTION to our communities is our most valuable asset.

Into the Wild:
The Outdoor Education Program at Camp Arroyo
Nestled in the oak-studded hills of Livermore, Camp Arroyo is a 138-acre wilderness wonderland on the edge of Del Valle Regional Park. It is here, in this spectacular outdoor classroom, that fifth- and sixth-graders from Alameda and Contra Costa counties learn about science, nature and sustainability.

For 16 years, Camp Arroyo was run by the YMCA, but in June 2019 the reins were handed to a new operator, United Camps, Conferences and Retreats (UCCR), a Petaluma-based nonprofit that has managed programs nationwide for 50 years. “UCCR has a 50-year history of running camps like Camp Arroyo with attention to important details like customer service and communication—making sure the campers, their parents, school administrators and teachers all feel welcome and included CALIFORNIA PARKS & RECREATION • WINTER 2020

When students first arrive at Camp Arroyo, some won’t even sit on the ground. Many have never set foot on a hiking trail, let alone gone camping or searching for owls and bats in the dark. “Just sitting on the grass or dirt can be a huge step outside of their comfort zone,” says Chapple. “But once they realize it’s OK, that nobody is going to yell at them for getting their clothes dirty, then all of a sudden their challenge zone becomes their comfort zone and they are able to do things that they might not have even considered possible.” By the end of the week, these same kids are smearing mud on their faces, catching bugs in the creek and sifting through compost for invertebrates. They’re even flying along a zip line and summiting a climbing wall. “The camp really helps our students find bravery inside themselves,” says Jennifer Pennybacker, fifth-grade teacher at campership recipient Mary-
lin Avenue Elementar y School in Livermore. “Our kids benefit tremendously from being able to go outside of their community and venture into what seems to be a secluded, far-off place in nature, even though it’s just 15 minutes away.” Accompanied by teachers and adult chaperones, students typically spend between three and five days at Camp Arroyo. In small groups, they learn about plants, animals and the importance of water conservation. They might do a water study that involves collecting aquatic insects to determine the health of the creek or learn about the Ohlone people’s relationship with the environment. The students may learn how they can integrate conservation into their daily lives and hone their team-building skills on a ropes course or by performing skits together onstage. One of the biggest personal achievements for many of the kids at Camp Arroyo is the Cresta Blanca hike. A 3-mile loop, the trail climbs through groves

The students might see turkey vultures, bald eagles or acorn woodpeckers, as well as learn about geologic change and erosion. The hike is also a chance for students to bond. “It can be daunting, and a lot of kids have anxiety over it,” says Chapple. “Before the hike, we set ourselves up as a team that supports each other. We talk about what that means so that the kids are empowered to help each other out when one of their classmates is struggling.” Sometimes the hike includes a trust challenge where the students are blindfolded, then, holding a rope in one hand and a friend’s shoulder in the other, inch along a section of the trail. “It was a bit scary but worth it,” says Anirudh, a fifth-grader from San Ramon’s Coyote Creek Elementary School. “I felt proud that I accomplished it. Inspiring Stewardship
Empowering students to be environmental stewards is a big part of Camp Arroyo. Staff members make a point to tell campers that the open space belongs to them, that it’s their territory to explore, enjoy and take care of. “The kids take that ownership seriously,” says Chapple. “They see trash on the trails and take it personally. There are chickens walking among apple trees and a nearby solar oven that bakes snacks such as nachos, s’mores, pies and even bread while the students work. Perhaps most significantly, they get to pick and taste produce fresh from the garden. “For a lot of kids, that’s a new thing,” says Chapple. “To see what part of the plant they’re eating and where it comes from. Kids don’t think they like broccoli, but pulling off pieces straight from the plant is a pretty different experience for them and they give it another chance. I tell parents that their kids might come back liking their vegetables!” By camp’s end, the students’ attitude toward vegetables isn’t the only change. Teachers say the kids often return home more independent and working better with their peers. Others bring a newfound love and respect for nature back to their families and communities. “We hope kids go home feeling better about being outside,” says Butler. “We hope they’re more active and, maybe, that they want to be stewards of the parks.” Reprinted with permission. Eric Aller Parks Manager City of Clovis Eric has worked in Park Maintenance for 24 years. He serves on many committees which support his ability to work with other departments and members of the public. He is responsible for Landscape Maintenance Districts throughout the City and spends time evaluating how to best maintain these into the future. Learning Lesson: 1. If you don’t agree with your boss you can offer suggestions but remember they are the boss. At times you need to humble yourself and do what’s right for the organization and respect the position. 2. Treat people with respect and listen to their suggestions. Give them the freedom to have input and be creative. This will help support them wanting to come to work. Wishes for the future: Start building a stronger, healthier community now. You may not see immediate benefits but people will reap the benefits into the future way past when you are gone. Spend time training your successor. Invest in the future staff so they may carry on the torch you have started.

Craig Bronzan Principal Bronzan Consulting As a third generation parks and recreation professional, I have had the privilege of working for over 40 years in service to my communities and our profession. I got the bug early in life as I followed my father and grandfather around to gyms, pools, playgrounds, and summer camps. I played, volunteered, worked, and created mischief at times for staff; however, I have been lucky enough to do what I love, in a profession that creates “sacred places and experiences.” If our goal is to leave the world a little better than we entered it, I cannot think of a profession that is more able to provide that experience for fulfillment. We are privileged to be able to serve and give back; something that the world can always use.

Sheila Canzian Director, Parks & Recreation City of San Mateo 10 Lessons Learned (okay….11!) 1) Common sense and good judgment are more valuable than turning out the perfect spreadsheet 2) “Know when to hold ‘em and know when to fold ‘em” 3) Forget the concept of seeking “fairness” and instead seek “reasonableness” 4) Professional networking will reap more value than you will ever imagine 5) If you are not invited to the table, invite yourself 6) Think of your accomplishments as building savings in a bank account. One day when you $&%#@ up, hope that you have built enough equity for a withdrawl, versus closing the account 7) Our personal reputation and that of our agency is built upon integrity. Admit when we are wrong, be accountable and learn from our mistakes 8) When trying to develop solutions, think of the “why” first and the “how” second 9) Give back to our profession 10) In order to be considered for a promotion, start thinking as the person above you would 11) Take informed risks. Nothing of consequence happens if we are spending time defending the status quo
Laura Detweiler Director of Recreation & Senior Services City of Newport Beach Chris Chamberlain Professor CSU East BAy Joining CPRS has been the single best thing I’ve ever done professionally. Through CPRS, I learned how to be a better leader, a true professional, and grow a network of life-long friends and colleagues who push each other to create better, healthier communities. I learned from some of the best and later, was able to mentor others new to the field. For me, it’s all about relationships. The cornerstone of our business is built on relationships- with our community, our customers, across our organization, and our field of professionals. Quality relationships define us as professionals through building trust, displaying integrity, and being credible. It’s what keeps our customers coming back for our programs and services. CPRS helped bring that into focus for me as a young professional and I’ve never forgotten it. CPRS, and our field has made me a better human being.

Working in the field of recreation has made my cup runneth over with a rewarding career that has made a difference on this planet. That’s a really cool thing to be able to say. I have worked with amazing, talented, caring people that have a passion for life and helping others live rewarding ones. I got lucky and landed in this profession while in college and it’s been a wild ride ever since. Everything else has come with hard work, commitment, showing up every day with the intent to learn something new and lead by example. The communities I have worked in were different in many ways, but had many more similarities. All were made up of people that want to belong, learn, have fun or needed our help. These basic needs are what makes us so valuable and powerful to our communities. Whether you are just starting out in your career, are in the middle of it or towards the end, you play an equally important role. It takes all of us to make great communities, and if we work together, there is no stopping what we can accomplish. The future is bright for Parks and Rec!

Leslie Fritz Director of Education California Park & Recreation Society Work diligently to build relationships. People need people, I sure have needed people to be successful in any role. Work on the competencies needed to manage for tomorrow. Continuously search for new opportunities, don’t be hesitant and figure out strategies to keep the overwhelm down. Have an entrepreneurial mindset when its the right time to do so.
Bob Disco Parks Superintendent City of Burlingame As a Parks Superintendent and City Arborist, Bob believes that the urban forest is vital to the wellbeing of the community. His philosophy has always been that if you have to remove a tree, you need to plant another in its place. Through his work with the Parks Division and Planning and Building Department, Bob strives to maintain, preserve, and protect the urban canopy of the City of Burlingame. He hopes those in the profession will continue to be the advocates for trees, and parks.
Diana Dobbert Director City of Westminister Having literally grown up in parks and recreation, beginning in 1987 as a Westminster recreation leader, and currently serving as the City’s Director of Community Services, I have seen first-hand the impact of the services we provide on our community. Like most in our profession, I never lose enthusiasm for the programs we offer to bring families together, organizing sports and other activities that encourage our young people to make healthy choices leading to future success, and giving our seniors a safe place to meet, exercise and interact with others. With increasingly diverse neighborhoods, I expect parks and recreation programs to increase in importance. When looking for housing, most everyone prefers to be near a park knowing the value they offer. Parks tend to make us all feel less isolated and more connected to our community. I am so proud to be part of CPRS.

Nick Franco Director County of San Luis Obispo I’ve spent over two-thirds of my life working in parks in California. Parks are the only workplace I’ve known as an adult and I wouldn’t have had it any other way. Parks have taught me about the astounding array of habitats in this state that we help protect. I’ve had significant experiences interacting with animals ranging from dolphins and elephant seals to banana slugs and zebras. But the most significant experiences I’ve had come from the interactions with fellow park employees who have dedicated themselves to making our communities better each day and with the thousands of visitors who have each taught me something more about why we do what we do and why parks are important. I am confident that the next generations of park employees and park visitors will find at least as much meaning and purpose in their park experiences as I have.
Lisa Rudloff Deputy Director of Community Services City of Irvine Over the past 29+ years of service in the parks, recreation, and community services profession, I have had tremendous opportunities to be of service to many communities. As I worked through my career, I had ambitious goals that could not come soon enough. Silly me and oh so little did I know during my climb was that to get to where I wanted to go takes experience and experience takes time. Taking time to serve your profession, working hard and having something good to give, maintaining a great attitude no matter the circumstances, taking responsibility and being good leader, developing your networking skills, sharing your stories to help find solutions to problems, understanding politics, not taking things so personally and continuing to improve yourself is what it’s all about. Remembering that your professional journey is not a sprint, it is a marathon and enjoying the ride is the best part. My journey is not finished but so far, it has been incredible. I work for an outstanding city and I am committed to lead my agency to provide exceptional services, facilities, and programs to our residents. I am blessed and grateful!

John Glaeser Director of Communications California Park & Recreation Society My dad told me when I was young “If a job is worth doing, it’s worth doing right.” I think he told this to me after a day of weed pulling, when I didn’t really do a good job of it. I also didn’t really get it at the time. But the next few times he said it, I began to understand. If you’re going to do something, do it to the best of your ability. His words still tickle in the back of my brain. At times when I finish a project and look it over and think, “Hey, that looks pretty good.” Then that tickle starts. “Yeah, but it could still be even better.” So I rework it and think “Yep, that’s very cool.” The tickle re-inserts itself again. “But is it great? Couldn’t you do a bit more? What if...?” I find my best work comes after 3, 4 sometimes 5 attempts. Never settle on just being okay. Don’t believe you’re done after one attempt. Strive to be the best. Afterall, if a job is worth doing, it’s worth doing right!

Paul Romero Commissioner City of Folsom Rarely does one find a career that brings opportunities, challenges, personal fulfillment, friendships, sorrows, satisfaction, and pleasure. That’s what Parks and Recreation brought to me. After 40 years of being a parks and recreation professional, I retired and became a citizen advocate for the profession. Is there a difference between being a professional or advocate? Of course; but, the values remain the same. Without doubt, methods change as does the audience. Park professionals make life better. They bring life and health to a community. Youth and adults receive positive outcomes and equally benefit from their service. Park and Recreation professionals are real world activists. Citizen advocates (Park and Recreation Commissioners) bridge the “real” world with the political world. They take the professional message to top decision makers and to the community. Advocates and professionals are mutually dependent. Having been both, I encourage you to work collectively for a better future.
Bill Michaelis Professor Emeriuts SFSU Relationships, values, praxis, inspiration, fun and lifelong friendships... Mike Stallings, Dave Bacon, Mike Perez, Ginny Jaquith, Harry Sippel, Dave Lewis, Frank Benest, Dick Trudeau, Pete Soderburg, Jim Murphy, Ezra Holland, Nicole Acquisti... and so many more (you know who you are). Several have left the building but not my heart and memory. What a privilege to have known them and worked with them. • People who always remember the deep and significant values of play and leisure and recreation... • People who have vision and the skills to creatively make things happen... • People who think outside the box... • People who never forget the deep historical and philosophical roots of recreation as a human service that makes a significant difference in individual and collective community lives... • People who know the value of (and utilize) public/private/nonprofit partnerships but never forget the significance of high-touch non-commercial interaction and the power of play... • People who are problem-solvers in the midst of cutbacks and budget constraints and who continue to make quality service happen. I am filled with gratitude. THANK YOU, CPRS and all of your caring people. Play On... and Carry On successfully, well into the 21st century.
Kim Uhlik Professor San Jose State University Specifically regarding CPRS, remember that you, as a fellow professional, are part of a community of dedicated people united in service: to our own agencies and clients, to our own professional development, and to the development of our colleagues. Be an active participant in professional organizations such as CPRS and NRPA by attending meetings and conferences, joining committees, and helping plan and execute activities. You may find a mentor, and become a mentor, discover your true calling and further your fellows’ careers, all the while creating a meaningful life. By giving, you will receive.

President’s Message u President’s Message, continued from page 6 through people, parks and programs, to lead the nation in parks and recreation, and to continue to prove true that Parks Make Life Better! I could have never imagined that this ride would come and go so quickly. I feel like I was getting the call yesterday informing me that the CPRS membership had elected me to begin the presidential series. Learning that I had three years to make the impact. Three years of executive planning, relationship building, advocating and board work accountability. It is so fast paced, and actually quite impressive to see so many ideas develop into concepts, programs, services, resources and opportunities. The leadership on the state board as well as on the 22 district and sections have set the bar high for the upcoming years and I am extremely proud to have led by each of you. Having the ability to train and learn beside you and give back to the membership through you has been the most rewarding part of my presidency. The staf f at headquar ters are equipped to provide our members with so many benefits and are constantly working to improve communication through website, emails, social media and magazines. The people you don’t know, the ones behind the scenes, they deserve so much credit. So much of what ends up in our hands as members comes from them and yet, they are

very seldom out in front of the curtain. So allow me to thank them publicly, and by all means join me in thanking them when you see them! Stephanie Stephens, Tammy Campos, Leslie Fritz, John Glaeser, Susan Wipf, Melonie Zarzuela, Chase Murdey, Beatriz Godinez-Muniz, Linnie Andreotti, and Janet Albritton Espinoza. Thank you to all of you at HQ for allowing me to drive the bus, for trying new things, reaching new heights, and for having patience with me when my crazy ideas needed a little massaging. I have learned from all of you and I am a better human because of the experiences you have provided me. Friends, CPRS has been my extended family. I have you all to thank for putting me in this position and for allowing me to engage with you and bring you a membership experience and value that is second to none. This path in leadership has been created with purpose and with meaning. Organically it has grown to be so much more. That is the story we need to share. The story of the CPRS members and their experience. The positive uplifting feeling we get when we work together, share, create, develop and accomplish. CPRS has been by my side for 20 years, even when I wasn’t active in leadership, it still knocked down doors for opportunity. So, if you are a member who is reading this and wondering what CPRS can do for you,
the answer is everything you want it to. Training, education, resources, networking, grants, professional development, and so much more. You just have to be present. You have to make the choice and ask yourself if you are ready to engage in an organization that can provide so many benefits and opportunities for advancing and being upwardly mobile in the profession. You have to take a good look at yourself and ask yourself if it is time. Time to take a risk, time to get out of your comfort zone, and time to begin your new leadership journey in recognizing your full potential as professional in parks and recreation. I believe that CPRS opens doors and I hope that you are brave enough to open that door this year. Thank you for keeping my dream alive and for reminding me how awesome we are as a profession. It has been a dream come true in getting to know you all, be a leader amongst you, and showing you my passion for leadership and recreation. With that, I will sign off one last time, Yours, In Service Lydie Gutfeld 2019-2020 President #know1Be1Show1
