Shingle and Stone: Thomas Kligerman Houses

Text byThomas Kligerman with Mitchell Owen Over the past forty years, Thomas Kligerman has been immersed in the history of residential architecture, weaving together sources from English and European traditions with the American vernacular, particularly the Puebloan style of the Southwest and the shingle style that has prevailed along the East Coast since the late nineteenth century. Kligerman has woven together these strands of domestic architecture to create his own American aesthetic. Shingle and Stone: Thomas Kligerman Houses is a full-career monograph with a selection of inspiring residences highlighting the evolution of his architectural thinking. The monograph presents thirteen major highlights from Kligerman’s portfolio. Beautiful natural landscapes, from the coasts of Martha’s Vineyard and the Hamptons to the forests of South Carolina’s Blue Ridge Mountains and the Pacific Northwest, showcase the depth and breadth of the architect’s oeuvre. In the architect’s own words, exceptional architecture combines existing styles to “move the needle forward.” This new monograph presents luxurious single-family homes that do precisely that. CH

SOUL: Interiors by Orlando DiazAzcuy

Text by Jorge S. Arango “All clients have a force about them that propels them through life,” says San Francisco- based Orlando DiazAzcuy, “and the project has to reflect that force. That force is soul.” Seen by professionals as a “dean of interior design” and a pioneer of minimalist design since the early 1980s, Diaz-Azcuy has been a major influence in interior architecture and design.

The rooms pictured in this monograph are elegantly composed but each reflect the owner’s sensibilities, be they in Miami, New York or San Francisco. Interior design writer Jorge S. Arango’s explanations of the rooms are concise and personalize each one. Diaz-Azcuy’s desire is to give minimalism soul, making it more poetic and livable. He does this through rich textiles, honest materiality, and global art and artifacts. Cleverly organized by themes such as eclecticism, light, geometry, nature, luxury and serenity, the book gives real insights into the creative process. Each chapter ends with invaluable advice to inspire readers. A bonus is that each room is captioned and elements in the rooms vary from IKEA bedside table, to a Dale Chihuly chandelier to art from Haines Gallery in San Francisco, to name a few. Although the rooms are highly sophisticated, they are also comfortable. Many have armchairs side by side, dining room furniture that looks good enough to eat and sofas you could melt into. With such a talent, it’s no surprise that Diaz-Azucy has been a designer for fifty years and won multiple awards. With many more to come. CH
