California is a state of incredible diversity, and we try to duplicate that with a variety of features on the many diverse styles of architecture and design. We always look for a unique cover for our Novem ber/December issue. We had several choices but thought maybe doing a different type of cover just for the November/December issue would be fun. The story will talk about a family and their lifestyle. We chose designer Jeffrey Alan Marks, his daughter and partner for this issue. I hope you like the idea. In addition, we are proud to feature some very talented designers, including Alexis Smith, who updated a 1901 Colonial Revival while staying true to its architectural integrity in Piedmont.

A two-story English-style manor house in Atherton was reinterpreted into a contemporary light-filled California compound by Feldman Architecture and BAMO principal Michael Booth. Designers Audrey Dunn and Ladd Lambert, cofounders, and principals of the Laguna Niguel firm McRae Lam bert Dunn, were entrusted to reshape a Mediterranean style home in Newport Beach and a young artistic couple recreated a personal paradise in the El Sereno neigh borhood of East Los Angeles with the help of architects Peggy Hsu and Chris McCullough. We hope you enjoy this issue and wish all a wonderful holiday season and happy new year.

BOWERS MUSEUM SANTA ANA

A new exhibition of works by international star Guo Pei, Guo Pei: Art of Couture, opens on November 12th. In the exhibit Guo Pei premiers a fresh take on her finest and most personal pieces, including gowns hand selected by herself.

The show will feature over 40 works of couture art, including the bespoke selection is Guo Pei’s Chinese Bride collection which makes its North American debut at the Bowers. Each gown not only underscores her ability to tap into China’s rich cultural heritage, but also an array of cultural influences from international arts, architecture and mythology. The interplay of female empowerment, strength and vulnerability are all reflected in exquisitely executed couture. The show closes on May 14th, 2023.

For more more information, please visit bowers.org.

MUSEUM OF CONTEMPORARY ART SAN DIEGO

Alexis Smith: The American Way, the first retrospective of her works in thirty years, continues at the Museum of Contemporary Art San Diego (MCASD) through February 3rd, 2023. Smith is widely known for her mixed-media collage works which draw heavily on film, literature, pop culture and Hollywood. Her unique practice has been informed by Conceptual and Pop Art and shaped by the Feminist movement of the 1970s, yet she has set out a path all her own that defies easy categorization.

The American Way brings together fifty artworks from each stage of the artist’s career, from her early artist books and intimate collages to wall paintings and room-sized installations. Featuring work produced throughout Brown’s career, from the 1970s to the 2010s, the exhibit highlights the themes the permeate her oeuvre, including her interests in gender, identity and class.

For more information, please visit mcasd.org.

SAN FRANCISCO MUSEUM OF MODERN ART

The San Francisco Museum of Modern Art (SFMOMA) announced the exhibit Joan Brown, the most in-depth examination of her work in over two decades. Spanning her days as a student at in the 1950s to her untimely death in 1990, Joan Brown showcases the artist’s many artistic styles. Over the course of her 35-year career, she created abstract expressionist canvases; figurative paintings portraying dogs, cats, self portraits; and works inspired by her spiritual explorations in the 1980s.

Commonly characterized as the one female in the second generation of the Bay Area Figurative Movement, Brown was in reality an artist and person who defied easy classification. Works including The Dancers in a City #2 and Gordon, Joan and Rufus in Front of S.F. Opera House make San Francisco’s influence on Brown’s artistic practice clear. The exhibition will continue through March 12, 2023.

DAWSON COLE FINE ART LAGUNA BEACH

Dawson Cole Fine Art is pleased to present Reflections & Introspection by internationally renowned sculptor Richard MacDonald. The exhibition, comprising over 50 works of art, will be on display in Laguna Beach through December 2022. The artist will be in attendance to celebrate his One Man Show on Saturday, November 12th from 8-10 p.m. and Sunday, November 13th from 12-3 pm.

The highly reflective surface of Reflections brings the viewer into the sculpture. This is a revolutionary idea in the realm of figurative art. As we see our own reflections shift and change on the triangular surface, we are reminded of our many faceted personalities. We relate to the sculpted figure, but the composition and material make us part of the artwork.

Dawson Cole Fine Art in Palm Desert on El Paseo will also host a One Man Show for Richard MacDonald, who will be in attendance, on Saturday, February 25th, 2023 from 6-8 p.m. RSVP to info@dawsoncolefineart.com.

The gallery is located at 326 Glenneyre Street, Laguna Beach, CA 92651. For more information, please call 949.497.4988 or visit dawsoncolefineart.com.

HAUSER & WIRTH–LOS ANGELES

Cindy Sherman revolutionized the role of the camera in artistic practice and opened the door for generations of artists and critics to rethink photography as a medium. Her works, Cindy Sherman. 1977 - 1982, are now on exhibit at Hauser & Wirth.

Following its critically acclaimed New York presentation, Hauser & Wirth shows over one hundred works from Sherman’s ground-breaking and influential early seriesincluding the complete set of 70 Untitled Film Stills, Rear Screen Projections, Centerfolds and Color Studies - in her second major solo exhibition with the gallery.

Preferring to work alone, Sherman was not only the photographer, but also the makeup artist, hairdresser, stylist, and director, casting herself as the star of heavily staged fictional tableaux. Inspired by depictions of women in the media, her characters explore a range of female stereotypes. These images are surprisingly relevant today. The exhibition remains at North Gallery B at Hauser & Wirth through January 8th, 2023.

The gallery is located in the Fort Mason Center, 2 Marina Blvd., Building C, San Francisco, CA. For more information, please call 415.397.8114 or visit hainesgallery.com.

Shingle and Stone: Thomas Kligerman Houses

Over the past forty years, Thomas Kligerman has been immersed in the history of residential architecture, weaving together sources from English and European traditions with the American vernacular, particularly the Puebloan style of the Southwest and the shingle style that has prevailed along the East Coast since the late nineteenth century. Kligerman has woven together these strands of domestic architecture to create his own American aesthetic. Shingle and Stone: Thomas Kligerman Houses is a full-career monograph with a selection of inspiring residences highlighting the evolution of his architectural thinking.

The monograph presents thirteen major highlights from Kligerman’s portfolio. Beautiful natural landscapes, from the coasts of Martha’s Vineyard and the Hamptons to the forests of South Carolina’s Blue Ridge Mountains and the Pacific Northwest, showcase the depth and breadth of the architect’s oeuvre.

In the architect’s own words, exceptional architecture combines existing styles to “move the needle forward.” This new monograph presents luxurious single-family homes that do precisely that. CH

One of America’s top interior designers, Jonathan Rachman opens the doors to his universe in Currently Classic: Jonathan Rachman Design, written with noted interiors and fashion writer Dean Rhys-Morgan, illustrating his eclectic, vividly colorful, and markedly refined world. Born on the island of Sumatra in Indonesia and based in San Francisco, Rachman injects his prestigious projects with a wide-reaching, worldly experience. He blends inspiration from his explorations into provincial flea markets with his taste for exquisite textiles, leather goods, handicrafts, and art objects, using the finest materials from the East and the West. SOUL: Interiors by Orlando DiazAzcuy

Text

“All clients have a force about them that propels them through life,” says San Francisco- based Orlando DiazAzcuy, “and the project has to reflect that force. That force is soul.” Seen by professionals as a “dean of interior design” and a pioneer of minimalist design since the early 1980s, Diaz-Azcuy has been a major influence in interior architecture and design.

The rooms pictured in this monograph are elegantly composed but each reflect the owner’s sensibilities, be they in Miami, New York or San Francisco. Interior design writer Jorge S. Arango’s explanations of the rooms are concise and personalize each one.

Diaz-Azcuy’s desire is to give minimalism soul, making it more poetic and livable. He does this through rich textiles, honest materiality, and global art and artifacts. Cleverly organized by themes such as eclecticism, light, geometry, nature, luxury and serenity, the book gives real insights into the creative process. Each chapter ends with invaluable advice to inspire readers. A bonus is that each room is captioned and elements in the rooms vary from IKEA bedside table, to a Dale Chihuly chandelier to art from Haines Gallery in San Francisco, to name a few. Although the rooms are highly sophisticated, they are also comfortable. Many have armchairs side by side, dining room furniture that looks good enough to eat and sofas you could melt into. With such a talent, it’s no surprise that Diaz-Azucy has been a designer for fifty years and won multiple awards. With many more to come. CH

INTERIOR AND TEXTILE

DESIGNER Leah O’Connell hails from a line of gardening aficionados. In the 1970s, her great-grandmother, Lurline Matson Roth, bestowed her 654-acre Woodside estate, Filoli Historic House & Garden, to the National Trust for Historic Preservation. O’Connell’s grandmother, Lurline Coonan, was a master gardener, whose garden is part of the Smithsonian’s Archives of American Gardens.

While O’Connell admittedly lacks a green thumb, she has channeled her family’s passion for horticulture into her textile work. “It’s my way of carrying on that tradition,” she says. The Grace motif recalls the scattering of blooms that would fall at Coonan’s feet as she assembled floral arrangements. Central to the Imogen pattern is a vase based on one that belonged to Coonan, that she filled with flowers and foliage picked up along her daily five-mile walk. “When I’m doing my design or textiles,” O’Connell continues, “I’m trying to capture my grandmother’s essence — that feeling I felt when I went in her home.”

About 12 years ago, following stints as a merchandiser for the likes of Restoration Hardware and Pottery Barn Kids, a personal endeavor shifted O’Connell’s professional path: She designed the interiors for her best friend’s Lake Tahoe house. “I had so much fun,” she says, “and it just snowballed from there.” Through word of mouth, Leah O’Connell Design was born.

In late 2019, O’Connell traveled to Ireland to celebrate the birthday of that same friend’s husband. The residences she visited were grand, yet “you immediately felt like the interiors were giving you a hug,” she notes.

“The textiles gave them warmth and charm. Those textiles work there, but they’re not going to have the same effect in my mid-century home in Marin. So how can I recreate that elevated elegance, in a casual form?”

Soon after returning from the trip, O’Connell launched her fabric and wallpaper line with eight designs. While beauty and craftsmanship are vital, she emphasizes that her textiles “are meant to be lived in and on.” A new fall

range, with earthy tones such as loden and ochre, will drop by year’s end, and her inau gural indoor/outdoor collection is slated for spring 2023. “So many of the things that I develop, I develop because I’m trying to find that special something for a client,” she explains. “I know what I want, but I can’t find it.” A project in Montecito, for example, led to the forthcoming fall palette.

Since venturing into textiles, she has come to relish the camaraderie with other local designers (including Alex Conroy, Serena Dugan and Katy Polsby). And, when it comes to ideating, although flowers are at the fore front, O’Connell’s influences are seemingly endless (Isla is her take on ikat). “When you’re a creative person, you’re always look ing,” she says. “Life can be awfully inspiring for doing what we do.” CH

MODERNIST MATCHMAKER

Real-Estate Broker Brian Linder Communicates his Passion to his Clients

BRIAN LINDER IS A LOS ANGELES –based realestate broker who specializes in the sale of architect-designed modern houses from the post-war era to the present. He sees himself as part gallerist selecting works of art, and part matchmaker fostering a happy marriage between the property and a new owner. Modernism is still a niche taste and the challenge for Brian is to represent exceptional architecture, by famous names or unknowns, and find buyers who will be worthy custodians.

No sane person would pay millions for a painting and then cut a strip off the side or repaint it to match the sofa, but houses are more vulnerable. When a small property occupies a valuable site there’s a temptation to redevelop it with something bigger as an investment. Brian searches for clients who value the integrity of a classic modern house with all its

limitations as they might a vintage Balenciaga dress or a Mercedes Gull Wing. “If potential buyers ask ‘is this is the only kitchen in the house’ I know it’s not right for them, and I wait for someone who will appreciate its qualities,” he explains. “Houses by Richard Neutra, R.M, Schindler, John Lautner and other celebrated architects command a premium, but most buyers are primarily concerned with location. What’s next door or across the street, what’s the neighborhood like?”

A passion for modernism came early. Growing up in Pittsburgh and later Alabama (his father was an itinerant professor) Brian developed a hatred of

ranch houses and the blandness of suburbia. After getting a business degree he decided to apply to architecture school, submitting a portfolio that included sketches of urban plans he had drawn at age five. He got his license to practice and later designed a house for his former wife in Austin, but found it more lucrative to work as a construction manager. He noticed from property ads in the Sunday LA Times that Mossler, Deasy and Doe were then the only Realtors to mention architects’ names, and applied for a job. Crosby Doe, who now has his own firm, hired him as an agent and has since become a friendly competitor.

Over the past 23 years, Brian has built his reputation as an independent broker. Though he lives in a Craftsman house of 1907, his appreciation for modernism as an artistic expression and an informal, indoor-outdoor way of life has intensified. “Mid-century modern” has become a cliché, often applied to houses that are neither, but Brian can tell the real from the faux, spotting treasures that have been overlooked and passing on properties that are deficient. He knows how to dress a house with furnishings that enhance its character if the seller hasn’t done so, and he’s not a purist. He respects those houses that have retained their original fittings but understands the desire to replace carpet with cork tiles, or a worn Formica counter with Corian. Like the LA Conservancy, he has become the guardian of a unique legacy, and has helped enlarge the market for creative architecture. CH

HARMONY

For the Love of EMBELLISHMENT

San Francisco Designer Dina Bandman Creates Inventive Interiors With Inspired Artistry

WITH A LIFELONG PASSION for design and decorative arts, Dina Bandman stepped away from law school studies ten years ago to set up her studio in North Beach, She hired a young and talented staff, and deci sively signed up gifted artisans, specialists of all kinds, and top contractors and vendors and suppliers. Her artful style and practical approach result in a modern, quiet maximalism, and rooms that feel comfortable, beautifully edited and highly functional. She finesses hand-painted wallpaper, custom-detail ing, bespoke fabrics and painted finishes that result in rooms that are emotionally engaging and personal.

“This has been an intense and highly rewarding initiation into the fast-changing world of design,” said Bandman. “We are excited about all the newest fabrics and mate rials, and always appreciate classical and traditional products with staying power. I love new technology, and at the same time have profound respect for the history of design. My clients are adventurous, and a touch of ‘old’ can make a house feel like home.”

Bandman’s full-service attention to detail resonates with young families, with single executives, and in residences of historic importance as well as splendid new city apartments.

Clients praise her perfectionist approach to functionality and practicality. Her approach is to design rooms that seduce with subtle colors, or with witty ornamentation. Bead-embroi dered lemon ornamented hand-painted wall paper and a custom-crafted Lucite baby bed were recent hits, in a nursery.

Soft pink magnolias lace and wafting bed draperies in a sun-filled bedroom were another showcase success.

Bandman’s first business/ creative move was to dream up one of the most original and dramatic rooms designed for the educationfundraiser annual. San Francisco Decorator Showcase. In 2017 she created (from a closet-sized storage room) a dazzling luxury laundry, complete with a high-functioning dog-washing set-up. The designer’s inspired concept was the drama of custom-designed de Gournay handpainted wallpaper with graphic indigo blue mountains inspired by ancient Chinese paintings.

“It was my first solo showcase, and I wanted to make a memorable impression so I pulled together unexpected luxuries,” Bandman said. “Wallpaper by de Gournay exudes sophisticated luxury, but it’s surpris ingly practical, and the pet wash was some thing innovative that all dog lovers can appreciate.”

There was also flower-arranging station, lined hampers, concealed storage. Clive Christensen cabinetry. Very multi-functional.

It was a hit. Her company was propelled into the future, and three more design showcase designs. Problem solving is her forte.

“Law school made me an analytical thinker, and devising artful and beautiful solutions is an essential part of design,”noted Bandman. “Recently we hid an unattractive radiator behind a beautiful chest I designed. with the lower door panels replaced with grilles.”

Young designers often ask her approach her annual collaboration with the San Francisco Showcase.

“I am grateful that I can support University High School financial aid funds, by doing something I love so much,” said Bandman. “is so stimulating to be able to design freely. With de Gournay it is so easy to make a room special. I always enlist their help.”

Bandman and her team have had an intensely creative year and anticipate an exciting year ahead. Projects range from two mountain resi dences to large-scale ground up builds.

“It’s exciting to be working in Aspen, Baton Rouge, White Fish, Jackson, and Tampa, and Park City,” Bandman noted. And she continues to sign up long-term residences in San Francisco. Each one is exciting to her, each one designed to fulfill the dreams of the homeowner, she said.

“The project I am feeling very attached to now is a project in Saratoga. Florida,” said the designer. “It’s the home of a young couple with the two cutest girls and they love de Gournay, Jamb, and the classical architect GIl Schafer. The house is a nice size as they value fewer rooms, bigger rooms. We are already planning to paper five spaces in de Gournay! Although not a ground up build- we are touching every interior surface and the home will be completely unrecognizable from the inside and out when we are done. Their home will be the defi nition of Fresh Traditional.” CH

ENDLESS SUMMER

At Home In Montecito

With Jeffrey Alan Marks

INTERIOR DESIGNER Jeffrey Alan Marks and his husband, Greg, are serious summer chasers. They spend June through August in East Hampton and the rest of the year in Montecito, where they can walk to Butterfly Beach from their California cottage. The family home was designed with their daughter, James, in mind, while channeling the cozy countryside of England.

“You’d think it’s in the Cotswolds,” Marks says of the quintessential white clapboard home, surrounded by a white picket fence. Before he got his hands on it, the interiors were “Airbnb chic,” slathered in fresh white paint, yet dated for modern living. By taking the house down to the studs, he created a more modern plan, transforming four tiny rooms downstairs into one open living space. He enlisted Plain English Kitchens (who he’d worked with in London) to capture that Cotswolds-meets-California vibe and while low ceilings, iron lighting, and collected pottery read country, plenty of seaside greens and blues, oil paintings of harbors, and striped shades amp up the coastal, nautical feel.

LEFT White picket fencing and shutters blend with boxwoods and citrus shrubs for a Cotswolds-meetsCalifornia vibe.

Rather than doing a formal dining room, they opted for “bulletproof banquettes” done in spill-proof Perennials tartan fabric, wrapping around a custom wooden breakfast table. “James sits there every day and only once threw spaghetti on the white linen walls,” he laughs. Here, they kick their feet up on soft poufs and rest coffee cups

and toys on rattan trays (all part of his line for Palecek). In the evenings they retire outside with their Labrador, Coal, around a firepit surrounded by transporting pine trees. “They’re what made me fall in love with the house,” says Marks, who admits he never had a real backyard before. “Here, it’s so nice to come home. FELDMAN ARCHITECTURE AND BAMO TRANSFORM AN ATHERTON MANOR

66 | CALIFORNIA HOMES
LEFT BAMO’S principal Michael Booth and project designer Carolyn Pfaff companioned a rectangular table from Stoneman Concrete with Luxembourg Dining Chairs for an enchanting outside dining space. Plath & Co General Contractors and Ground Studio Landscape Architecture collaborated with Feldman Architecture and BAMO on the extensive renovation of this 8,183-sq. Ft. estate on 1.16 acres in Atherton.

In the hallway, a photograph of the Biblioteca di Mafra III, Portogallo, by Massimo Listri hangs above a Chinese Chippendale-styled console. Benjamin Moore’s White Opulence provides the perfect backdrop.

THE EXPANSIVE GROUNDS OF A TWOstory English-style manor house in Atherton featured a Heritage Oak and a redwood grove. But rather than looking outward toward the verdant landscape, the 1990’s estate turned inwards, highlighting European-inspired architectural detailing and a dark formal floor plan. The new owners, a young couple with two children, approached Feldman Architecture and BAMO to reinterpret the existing structure into a contemporary, light-filled, site-sensitive California compound with fluid boundaries between the inner and outer worlds.

To accomplish this, partner Chris Kurrle and architect Anjali Iyer of Feldman Architecture eliminated extraneous details and opened the rooms up to each other. “The project leverages the bones of the existing building, stripping away all that is superfluous, breathing in a new sense of life,” Kurrle said. BAMO principal Michael Booth selected luminous off-white paint for the walls, pale oak floors, and streamlined furnishings to unify the interiors. An entry stairway ascends ribbon-like toward an oculus skylight to support an Allied Makers chandelier that descends with a cascade of sand-blasted glass dome pendants.

In the living room, Kurrle and Iyer revealed the dramatic vaulted ceiling initially hidden. Gray slate floors extend to the terrace and south garden, accessed through massive steel and glass bi-fold doors. Booth utilized a neutral color palette punctuated with azure and citrine to complement the exterior views. A luxurious tufted sofa and armchair from A Rudin upholstered in an opulent Fortuny lagoon-colored velvet anchor a steel blue silk and wool area rug. For end tables, Booth juxtaposed a modern bouillotte table with an ivory lacquer cubistic table from John Lyle.

The living room segues into the dining room, where de Gournay’s monochromatic wallpaper transports the viewer into an imaginary garden that might have encompassed a stately late 18th Century British home. Booth mixed this with classic chairs by Emmanuel Gallina surrounding a minimalist rectangular dining table. Adjacent to the dining room, the formerly traditional kitchen received a modernist edit with HenryBuilt cabinetry.

On the second floor, “Each corner houses a bedroom–maximizing views, light, and privacy and reinforcing a sense of graceful symmetry.” explains Iyer. The tranquil blanc de chine-toned primary bedroom centers on a curvaceously shaped upholstered headboard in a Rogers & Goffigon textile. Booth flanked this with a pair of angular nightstands from Thomas Fetherston. To complete the space, he combined an ornately carved Anglo-Indian-style armchair with an abstracted Chinese-formed side table from De La Espada. CH

From the light-flooded foyer, the stairway leads up to the family’s bedrooms and down to a converted basement. The reconfigured space now has a media room, maker room, gym, and two guest bedrooms.

remarkable transformation

ARCHITECTS PEGGY HSU & CHRIS MCCULLOUGH CREATE A PERSONAL PARADISE FOR THEIR CLIENTS

The exaggerated arch between the dining area and garden was hand drawn on plans by the architects to accentuate a crafted sensibility.

76 | CALIFORNIA HOMES
NOVEMBER/DECEMBER 2022 | 77

IT STARTED WITH THE GARDEN , what the clients call their “food forest” created over a period of years along the side yard of their 1946 house in an urban area of East Los Angeles. As their garden grew lush, providing their daily diet of vegetables, fruits and herbs, they came to regret that it had so little connection to their life at home. To effect a remarkable transformation, they turned to their friends architects Peggy Hsu and Chris McCullough.

McCullough had known his client Shaheen Seth since the early ‘90s when both studied architecture at Carlton University in Ottawa. Smith went on to become a cinematographer and often works with his wife, Sarah Adina Smith, the writer and director behind the 2021 dance drama Birds of Paradise. The house evolved as something of a creative partner ship, taking into account the couple’s desire for a family. Their son Baaz is now almost two years old.

OPPOSITE TOP

The massive front door made of old redwood was discovered at a salvage yard.

OPPOSITE BOTTOM

The owners wanted open informal living spaces to raise their young son.

The 2200-square-foot remodel was lent an immediate air of substantiality by the architects’ decision to use the sort of thick cream-colored exterior walls seen in North African architecture. Original walls were giving a similar coating of thickened stucco softened in appearance by bullnose details.

After removing some of the interior walls, Hsu/ McCullough were able create an open plan great room. Exaggerated archways, which can be closed with pocket doors, opened the kitchen and dining areas to the mature trees and additional gardens planted in the back. The original structure had been built on an unusual downslope lot so the rear patios are surrounded by the leafy branches of mature trees. The dining area’s soft green wall brings the ambience indoors where dining table and chairs by CB2 are both stylish and functional.

The kitchen was of particular importance to the clients, who cook with the food from their garden. Accordingly, Miele appliances were added. The elongated space, some 60 feet, connects the living, kitchen and dining areas with views of the greenery. The architects extended walnut-stained wood flooring up the wall and over the ceiling to give the cozy

impression of a “wood womb,” as they call it. A 14-foot long kitchen island, custom made of brass, provides warm reflected light throughout the day. Cabinetry in an unusual floral pink compliments the dark tones of the wood.

In pursuing the renovation, the architects were able to build a subterranean room, half a floor below the kitchen, to serve as a library. Painted a deep teal with botanical wallpaper by Cole & Sons, the owners could sit in Pierre Paulin Mushroom chairs and be calmed by a collection of aquariums that enhance a

peaceful, underwater sensation. Bold color choices throughout the house were made by Sarah Smith, who is also a painter.

The primary living area is defined by a pair of aqua sofas by Modani that facing one another, and a large painting by Frohawk Two Feathers aka Umar Rashid. Instead of gutting the original guest bathroom, they took advantage of its curvy details and original yellow tiles. The massive old redwood front door was discovered by the owners at a salvage yard and refinished by them with the help of a local carpenter.

ABOVE A porthole window on the upper deck overlooks the gardens.

ABOVE RIGHT Inspired by North African architecture, Hsu/ McCullough designed sculptural stucco staircases inside and out.

The architects boxed the original flimsy staircase, no longer to code, in the chunky, sculptural style that is also a powerful feature of the outdoor entrance. The young boy’s upstairs bedroom is papered in a fantasy of flora and fauna by Cole & Sons. The architects retained the vintage rosecolored pink tile of the original bathroom while adding new fixtures and similar wallpaper patterned with a Rousseauean jungle.

In the master bedroom windows similar to clerestories provide light yet maintain privacy. That bedroom opens to a dramatic rooftop terrace outfitted with a Rove Concepts sofa table and swinging settee. A large porthole in the patio wall allows the dog to take in the view as well.

Just as the clients requested, there is scarcely an area of the renovated home where they are not in touch with their own personal paradise. CH

The coffee table is custom made by McRae Lambert Dunn, set atop an area rug by J. D. Staron. Window coverings are from Superior Roman Shades through Gina B.

IN REVAMPING THE INTERIORS of a 4,000 square foot Newport Coast home, the only remnants from the previous space were three commissioned artworks that the clients wanted incorporated into their new design.

Other than that, Audrey Dunn and Ladd Lambert, the co-founders and principals of Laguna Niguel firm McRae Lambert Dunn, were entrusted with a head-to-toe interior revamp of the transitional Mediterranean-style house, which has expansive views across Orange County all the way to downtown Los Angeles.

“Our design approach was to provide a more cosmopolitan environment by updating all interior finishes, completely remodeling all bathrooms and to provide new furnishings throughout,” said Dunn. The landscaping was overseen by Patrick May Landscape Design.

Audrey and Ladd kept the original floor plans, but gutted everything else. They said the previous home interiors “had bold colors and the furnishings and accessories had dated themselves.” The original stair railings were in a heavy, intricate design. These were replaced with cleaner, simpler railings that serve to open up the space, accented with a sculpture by Ron Dier.

The designers zeroed in on the clients’ very specific lifestyle requirements and interests; they travel frequently, have homes on both coasts, and enjoy music. To that end, Dunn and Lambert created a highly-customized luggage-packing, dressing and wardrobe space.

“This custom cabinet features her collection of designer handbags,” said Lambert. “And her custom circular dressing area accommodates her collection of Chanel couture” Certainly, the wardrobe doubles as an impeccable showcase for outstanding fashion, yet is still in keeping with the understated aesthetic of the house.

The designers also built out a music performance room, as well as a home office that does double-duty as a vocal training room, with a custom-made piano key artwork piece. Lambert said that other highlights include the Great Room with an adjacent remodeled Wine Room.

Like so many design projects around the country, the timeline on the Newport Coast endeavour had to be extended accordingly.

“We initially started the project the year before COVID hit,” said Dunn. “We began with the master bedroom and master bathroom suite, and worked through the entire home in phases. Like many projects underway, COVID put a damper on the schedule, as well as with supply chain product delays and tradesmen.” CH

GRAND AMBITIONS

AN EXQUISITE ESTATE IS RETURNED TO ITS EARLY 1900S GLORY, WITH SEAMLESS UPDATES FOR MODERN LIVING

The library, which features new and original built-ins, was given a moody makeover with Benjamin Moore’s Polo Blue, custom furniture and a pair of Rebekah Callaghan paintings.

In the entry — illuminated by a Visual Comforts chandelier — a vintage rug from Tony Kitz Gallery and table from 1stDibs top the home’s original herringbone parquet floors.

In the formal living room, a 1940s French gilt and mirror cocktail table, a Visual Comfort pendant, Vaughn sconces, a rug from Tony Kitz Gallery and custom upholstered furniture create a sophisticated scheme.

WHEN A PROMINENT PROPERTY in town hits the real estate market, it tends to elicit plenty of curiosity. And so it was that in 2018, interior designer Alexis Smith found herself walking through the four stories of a grand estate in Piedmont. “I don’t need to own it,” she remembers telling her husband. “I just need to design it, because I’m afraid someone is going to ruin it.”

She seemingly spoke it into existence. Not long after, the home’s new owners — a healthcare executive and a self-described “chief purchasing officer/home chef” — enlisted Smith to update the 1901 Colonial Revival residence, while staying true to its architectural integrity. “It needed a lot of TLC,” says Smith. Although it showed its age and wear, thankfully, many original attributes — like the box-beam ceilings, high wainscot and fluted pilasters — remained intact.

In collaboration with RM Builders and Sherman Architecture, Smith’s firm, Shoshin, restored the splendor of the 8,000-square-foot abode. To their credit, the new elements don’t necessarily feel new. “Of course, people live differently now than they did in 1901,” says Smith, referencing the kitchen and primary suite in particular. “It was very important to the clients that those spaces have the same proportion and scale and details as the rest of the home.”

ABOVE Benjamin Moore’s Simply White and Calacatta Gold marble brighten the kitchen, whose soapstone-topped island has details, like dentil molding and fluted legs, that echo the home’s original architecture. RIGHT Old and new harmonize in the kitchen corner, appointed with 19th-century Swedish Biedermeier chairs, a Noir table and a Moroccan-style lantern from L’Aviva Home. OPPOSITE The Keith Fritz dining table is flanked by 1920s Swedish chairs, upholstered in a Hodsoll McKenzie fabric, with a circa-1880 Khorasan carpet underfoot and a vintage Jean-Marc Fray chandelier overhead.

On the main floor, the old kitchen and two other small rooms were combined to yield an expansive venue that better suits its current occupants (which includes three kids in elementary and middle school). The white walls, ceiling and perimeter cabinetry are anchored by a soapstone-topped wood island with dentil molding and fluted legs. Of the island, Smith notes that “we tried to come up with something that felt like it belonged in the house, with the type of millwork it had.”

Elsewhere on the same level, the enclosed porch was elevated to match the elegance of the adjacent formal living room. Smith introduced marble floor tiles in a classic checkerboard motif and a Hector Finch hanging lantern. In the library, just off the foyer, she kept the existing glassfront built-in bookcases; installed additional built-ins along the opposite wall, including a sofa; and unified the entire room with Benjamin Moore’s Polo Blue.

RIGHT The fireplace — clad in Ann Sacks tiles and one of eight in the home — is a focal point of the primary bedroom, made further inviting by the George Smith chaise.

Throughout the project, Smith allowed for “moments of tension,” juxtaposing different styles and provenances. Take the dining room, where wainscot and a Phillip Jeffries wallcovering serve as the backdrop for a Jean-Marc Fray Murano glass chandelier procured from a vintage dealer; a work by San Francisco-based abstract, figurative oil painter Laina Terpstra; and 1920s Victorian-style Swedish dining chairs upholstered in a Hodsoll McKenzie chenille-and-linen fabric.

In a new powder room, awash in Farrow & Ball’s De Nimes, Smith lined the walls with traditional paneling, then brought in a marble console and an asymmetric contemporary faucet by Graff. By incorporating antique and vintage furnishings — some even older than the house itself — Smith imbued the interiors with a lived-in sensibility as well as individuality. “It’s nice to have something that maybe not everybody has or could just order out of a catalog,” she explains. And again, there’s the matter of creating compelling juxtapositions; for example, in a kitchen corner, 19th-century Swedish Biedermeier dining chairs provide seating at a Noir table with a zig-zag base.

“I’m a nerd for the details found in older homes,” says Smith, the daughter of an architect. “That I got to help bring this one back to life, with people who completely respect what was original but were also willing to take some risks and do some things that felt interesting and playful, it was such a pleasure.” CH

I HAVE BEEN A CONSTANT FAN OF Claridges London. When I read their parent company, the Maybourne Group, had arrived in Beverly Hills; I booked an immediate flight to experience the property.

Can you fall in love with a hotel? I did.

Entering the Maybourne Beverly Hills with a warm welcome, you can be [happily] distracted by the display of luxury cars at the entrance. Walking through the front door, you enter another world, starting with a long center entry table covered in an exuberant installation of flowers that took my breath away. The art collection on the property is impressive, with several pieces by contemporary artists on art collectors’ wish lists.

The Maybourne superpower is their keen eye when selecting their partnerships and developing talented hospitality stars. Following their other properties, Claridges, The Connaught, and The Berkeley, you can see the company’s ethos.

The elegant bar designed by Andre Fu Studio features a show-stopping bar centerpiece carved from solid Turkish silver onyx and accented with polished nickel. The jewel box space is an excellent backdrop for the innovative cocktails created by Head Mixologist Chris Amirault, and on Friday and Saturday nights has a live DJ. The Terrace restaurant has become a place to be seen, and the menu lives up to the Maybourne Group standards. I have always wanted to be the person who hits the gym, but it has just been a fantasy until I saw the gym at The Maybourne. The elegant gym includes Woodway treadmills, Peloton bikes, Technogym elliptical trainers, and Wattbikes, but the dumbbells by Pent, made of walnut and steel, are artworks in their own right and changed my feelings about gym life. After your workout, you can head to the café to order a green juice or go to the spa for a treatment. Most hotel spas are tucked away like an afterthought; not at the Maybourne, it is expansive. It features a beautiful mosaic mineral pool reminiscent of a Turkish or Hungarian bathhouse.

The room interiors by world-renowned interior designer Bryan O’Sullivan are a marriage of classic and contemporary styles with standout custom-designed furniture that elevates the decor and feels fresh and modern. The suites are a perfect spot to call home base for an extended visit with stylish and comfortable design details.

The most memorable thing about the Maybourne is their understated and friendly service. You have all the amenities of a worldclass hotel with the gracious hospitality of a family that takes pride in their home. CH
