Hollyhock
HOUSE
Frank Lloyd Wright's First Los Angeles Commission and a UNESCO World Heritage Site
HOLLYHOCK HOUSE was Frank Lloyd Wright’s first Los Angeles commission and an ode to California celebrating its freedom and natural beauty. It introduced Rudolph Shindler and Richard Neutra to Los Angeles and is the precursor of California Modernism, which came to include celebrated homes by all three visionaries. Built
between 1919 and 1921 for oil heiress Aline Barnsdall. She commissioned the house as the centerpiece of a cultural and arts complex on Olive Hill, including a significant theater, cinema, artists residences, and commercial shops. She asked Wright to incorporate her favorite flower, the Hollyhock, into the design of her residence.
While the architect and client only partially realized Barnsdall's vision for a thriving art park in East Hollywood, surrounded by citrus groves at the time, they did complete Hollyhock House and two guest residences. Since Barnsdall's generous donation of the property to the City of Los Angeles in 1927, her dream has been fully realized. Today, it stands as a vibrant art center, boasting a theater, gallery, and on-site classes year-round.
In 2019, Hollyhock House was designated as the first Los Angeles UNESCO World Heritage site and was part of “The Twentieth Century Architecture of Frank Lloyd Wright," which includes eight sites spanning fifty years of Wright's career.
The house is open for in-person, self-guided tours, including unprecedented access to the restored outdoor spaces, showcasing new aspects of Wright's selfproclaimed "garden house." Offered Thursday through Saturday from 11:00 AM to 4:00 PM. Advanced ticket purchase is required as tour capacity is limited. Tickets are available on hollyhockhouse.org.

Paul Brant Williger Architect
ORDER, RESOLUTION & BEAUTY
For more than three decades, Paul Brant Williger has dedicated his talents to fulfilling the residential requirements and dreams of a host of discriminating high-end clients. The reputation he has built is that of a gifted architect with a proven ability to engage with patrons in such a way as to permit them to articulate and realize their own visions.
Williger began his career in the office of Robert A.M. Stern and, like Stern, displays a keen understanding of the requisites for luxury living, his bespoke skills having been honed in the affluent enclaves of Southern California, from Laguna Beach and Montecito to Malibu and Beverly Hills. Although known for his fluency in a number of architectural traditions, Williger is not one to place style over substance. “The signature or brand is not crucial for me. What is important is that I have realized my clients’ desires and gone beyond their expectations. That’s when I know I have done my job.” This mantra has served him well and has been one of the keys to his building the exclusive and discerning client base that has followed him to his namesake architectural firm, Paul Brant Williger. “My approach,” he explains, “is to begin with the clients’ dreams, together with the site and the project parameters, and to articulate these into a built form. My task is to find the opportunities in each situation which, when addressed intelligently, add depth and richness to a project.”
My clients come to me because they know that along the way we will navigate that process without losing sight of the aesthetics. The goal is order, resolution and beauty–not just getting a building permit.”

Wade Weissmann Architecture
CREATING HEIRLOOM ESTATES, MASTER PLANS, RENOVATIONS, AND LIFE-CHANGING BESPOKE ARCHITECTURE
Uniquely inspired by the individuality of each client and location, a Wade Weissmann Architecture house is a custom representation of a specific dream, yet every house embodies hallmarks of timeless design and heirloom quality craftsmanship that only get better with age.
Approached holistically, the feelings evoked by the unique spaces and environments are integral to the creative process. The multitude of factors that need to be considered, such as location, landscape and topography, views, and weather patterns, among others, become infused into the finest details of the designs. You might call the architects at WWA detail obsessed.
Designs are often initially imagined by hand, sometimes on a cocktail napkin at a meeting with a potential client. WWA uses both hand sketching and rendering techniques that hearken back to earlier eras of architecture, while also being acutely aware of the modern conveniences and efficiencies essential to day-to-day living. Sketches become renderings via computer-aided modeling, layering in architectural detail that builds upon the character of your space and is essential to telling the story of place, from the smallest detail on the stairway to the millwork featured throughout a particular room.
Whether visualizing ground up architecture or reimagining through renovation, historical precedent is regularly referenced. WWA remains committed to constantly learning from the past and leaning into what is current and fresh, not trendy, simply timeless.

Jeffrey Dungan Architects
HIGHLY LIVABLE HOMES WITH THOUGHTFUL CONNECTION TO SETTING ARE THE LEGACY OF THIS REVERED FIRM
Leaf through architect Jeffrey Dungan’s inspiring monograph, The Nature of Home: Creating Timeless Houses (Rizzoli, 2018) and it’s easy to see why he’s in high demand. The allure of his firm’s work—marked by deep understanding of site context and a clean-lined, contemporary vision—is, in part, due to how beautifully it draws on classical traditions and regional vernaculars while transcending them. “If you listen to the site, the house will lay itself out like a fabric caressing the earth,” says Dungan of his poetic approach to marrying built and natural environment.
Established in 1999 in Mountain Brook, Alabama, Jeffrey Dungan Architecture has earned devotion from discerning clientele across the country for its authentic, human-centered designs—be they custom homes, remodels, or commercial builds—that share a sense of communion with setting. Sophisticated materiality and use of natural light to sculpt space are other hallmarks, along with genuine empathy for clients and commitment to making the process enjoyable.

Ike Baker Velten
BLENDING TRADITIONAL WITH CUTTING-EDGE PROCESSES
Ike Baker Velten (formerly Ike Kligerman Barkley, SF Bay Area) creates a distinctive design rooted in traditional technique yet is modern in its application of sculptural forms, taut detailing, and glass expanses, underlaid with a process that is both rigorous and lighthearted.
Their architecture and interior staff work collectively or independently with outside partners. IBV collaborates with clients, craftspeople, and colleagues to produce personalized living environments and the occasional public building, where each project receives dedication to intimate detailing to highlight each project’s unique location and character.
IBV realizes their projects by blending traditional handicrafts with cutting-edge processes. Structures are imagined and communicated through impressionistic sketches, and digital renders use the latest technologies. From initial designs through construction, they focus on selecting the best materials, ensuring that material integrity remains a hallmark of our work. Partner John Ike’s newest book, 9 Houses / 9 Stories (Vendome), explores and celebrates the inextricable bond between the architect and those who implement his vision, a give-and-take that results in singularly designed residences. The Ike Baker Velten office serves clients from the San Francisco Bay Area and beyond.

Penamade
Luis Peña’s Meticulously Crafted Furniture Collection Makes a Bold, Sculptural Statement
BY ROBYN WISE | IMAGES COURTESY OF PENAMADELUIS PEÑA’S SUCCESSFUL CAREER in graphic design and film took an interesting swerve. As a commercial art director, he developed talent in visual storytelling, but sought a more concrete form for his ideas. Two years ago, the Bay Area designer launched his handcrafted wood furniture line, Penamade, known for its playful takes on classic and midcentury modern motifs. “To be authentic, design must come from trial and error,” Peña says of his iterative process, which has yielded a growing collection of impeccably built pieces in black ash, chocolatey walnut, and clean-grained white oak.
Peña typically starts with a feeling he’s looking to physically render. “The first goal is always emotion,” he says, “then I look to history and personal experience.”
His elemental Nona table pays homage to Italian Art Deco and “belongs in a grandma’s house.” The Hosfelt table features an impossibly slender yet sturdy base while the Roxy nightstand, finished in exotic marble and brushed brass, is a study in curvaceous geometry.

Over three decades in the home building industry gives Michael Reeves an intimate knowledge of his craft. Design
Artfully
BY ROBYN WISE | IMAGES COURTESY OF TUELL & REYNOLDSFcreating a one-of-a-kind texture or giving subtle curve to a table, the duo behind their namesake furnishings brand believes in keeping traditional craft alive. “Without industry support for small studios and artisans, the old-world hand-techniques will eventually die, and we’ll lose all that knowledge and diversity,” says Tuell. He and Reynolds met in college while studying architecture and launched their company in 2003. Today they operate out of their Northern California headquarters, where they design and manufacture a full line of handcrafted furniture, lighting, and accessories made in sumptuous materials like bronze, brass, agate, horn, and petrified wood.
A lot of their design inspiration comes from early Art Deco and the natural world. The Fractal table, for example, is based on growth patterns of ice crystals; the newly introduced Foliose series emerged from Tuell’s current obsession with lichen. No matter the project, he says, “the touch of the human hand and letting the truth of materials speak are always key.
