Calligraphy inspires...It stimulates... It unleashes the great power and the enticing magic of letters, symbols, & scripts.

I begin with an idea, and then it becomes something else.

To design is much more than simply to assemble, to order, or even, or even to edit, it is to add value and meaning, illuminate, to simplify, to clarify, to modify, to dignify, to dramatize, to persuade, and perhaps even to amuse.

Introduction

I

have done BFA from J.J Institute of Applied Art, my major for 2 years was Typography along with Calligraphy. Calligraphy

is one of my strengths as my hand writing is very smooth and articulate. I prefer hand writing since my childhood. Calligraphy inspires me, understanding the formations of letters in black & white or color gives it a whole new meaning. A true artist will manipulate the strokes to create a painting. Calligraphy as a visual art form has now reached common house holds. When I was doing research on the theories and working methods of a Calligrapher from the Indian abstract period, the main inspiration comes from Achyut Palav, an important calligrapher from this period. As an experiment I decided to begin piece in the same way, as per his comments. Typography is something I still need to take it up further, there is a lot of

the reference was given by my guide. I could not meet Ms.Charul, who is a director of the company, but I met Rima. I got a chance to see her work, the calendar/booklet with varying colors over the years.

Analysis of Calendar

I

have done an initial analysis of the Calendar. There is no expression on

the cover as well as inner page, I have highlighted my inputs below.

White colour of border Font Medium font in Hindi Italic font in English

Red color of Border. 28 cm

Colour of background : Depicting white Light Red ( Gradient) in the background. On the bottom of the page is the baseline, which needs to be more eye catching. On the Bottom, depicts year, Baseline in English, it is not attracting the baseline.

21.3 cm

On the Bottom : Punch

On the back page, there is a logo of Loknaad company along with the baseline. Address, Email id and other information.

10

Karan Arora PG-GraphicDesign 2008-09

Inner Page, which is the 3rd page contains english to hindi translations. Both fonts are different and not matching for comparison.

I am quite interested in expressive calligraphy and typography. There was a time when they were using Devnagri calligraphy in India. I want to make an effort to understand the quotation along with meaningful study of calligraphy and arrange type.

Colour of background : Depicting white colour in the background. Red colour of Border. Font In the Quote, large font in Hindi Name of the poet, In Hindi, should be small. The translation of quote in Hindi and English, compostition is not clear. Two Copy matters, both fonts are not matching.

Weeks and dates are not in contrast. The months, january & february should have been a little smaller so as to accentuate the dates.

The year of 2010, should be more focuused on.

Text and day are not merging. No need end of line

Keywords

I

collected a large paper & started with the understanding of calligraphy and

arranging type. I created mind mapping beginning with placing the topic in the center of the paper and created branches of thoughts that stem from it, and out them up in keywords. So that it gives a complete picture of what’s the kind of composition, different fonts, color, format etc. The calendar has been carefully chosen to include work ranging from the fairly simple to the highly complex; the traditional to the more adventurous.

I’ve put of in the sketch book. Every text has a meaning; a feeling, a sound and a rhythm. When I was expressing or simply writing a particular word or whole paragraph, I kept a few points in my mind regarding the placement of those elements, regarding space division/ composition, and also the paper or any surface, on which I was writing. The word, the line or the paragraph or whatever text you are using, is one of the element of design.

I explored a lot of sketches on the paper. You need to observe the space in which you will be working. I had to layout the text at the paper space. While doing layout one should consider space management very carefully.

I finally put 2 images which depicted the overall composition. The next step of the development stage is creating variations based on the most effective solution chosen from the experimental studies. Variations can be vastly different with changes to the compositional factors, including colour, position, balance, contrast and calligraphy.

Karan Arora PG-GraphicDesign 2008-09

I got good ideas when I wrote my name on the sand in the edge of Sea. I got light box in the PD studio, I tried to bring the writing and background to some conclusion, using sands and brush or stick in the background. I also worked towards giving some movement and drama to the Quotes by position and diagonal inclination; light was closer. In the Last one( red outline), final draft.

Experimenting with Calligraphy Stage 2

I tried a new experiment of Calligraphy. I was still not too sure whether I could make it work or not. I took plain paper along with glue stick tube, I wrote in my own style with the gum. Later when it dried I applied black color on the paper.

Typeface Selection

W

ith an understanding of the characteristic of typefaces, the

selecting process begins. Examine the full type family in a variety of settings, that match the requirements of the design. Firstly, I had written notes through fonts.

Farid, one of the leading Sufi saints, is considered the first poet of Punjabi language. Also wrote in Persian, Arabic, Hindvi and Urdu. I was inspired by Statue at Rani ki Vav in Sidhpur, the squares in the tiles there form triangular shape due to the light falling in a particular angle. Taking that into consideration, I designed the basic layout of the calendar. I added the colour red and black on font, also added very light grey and red in the shadow kind of background. But the date is not catching the eye.

Shared Heritage, True Heritage

In the quote by Sufi Saints, the letterforms are manipulated to create dimension. In terms of composition, the stylized setting is contrased by a sans serif typeface set in a range of sizes to achieve hierarchy. I used grid system for page and screen layout as it makes it easy to organize and balance all of my elements.

I

tried to decode the meaning of SANJHI VIRASAT (Shared Heritage)

Sanjhi means family and Heritage means home, both the words are placed together. I tried to inculcate the feel and true meaning of the quotation. I explored a lot of calligraphy on cover page, in terms of manipulation. I also looked to match on English and Hindi calligraphy.

38

Karan Arora PG-GraphicDesign 2008-09

In the cove page (1st one), I added pure Red colour , but the contrast was not striking.

Finally, I added the colour red, in terms of Ego, it means opinion that you have about yourself. I added it as the background colour and the text colour was kept white. The contrast here was striking.

Colour & Printing Duotone are the result of printing a greyscale image in two different ink colours. I added 2 colours red and black, both colours are contrast. Shade is a variation of a hue produced by the addition of black.

Tint is variation of a hue produced by the addition of black.

I chose Image > Mode > Duotone to display the Duotone Options dialog. From the Type list select Duotone. The first Ink color defaults to Black and I added a second ink color. Because duotones are typically used in commercial printing, I offered a choice of colors from a Pantone color swatch. I used the color picker, in terms of Ego with the help of the Quotation.

Loknaad -

A noble soul is one, who knows the sufferings of others, Helps remove their grief without a trace of ‘pride’.

Do you know who I am ! In this flase pride they die. See their destiny. They bring their end themselves.

Your stay is but for a few days. Be not so proud . In the end, humble Fakir Hussain says, you’ll be one with the dust.

2010 Insaan Hain Hum To the Spirit of Peace Seeking Humanity Peace Expression by Loknaad

Born in Lahore in a weaver family Shah Husain was oriented to scriptures, spiritualism and service from childhood. He recieved his preliminary education from Maulavi Abubakar. Thoroughly immersed in the Supreme. Being, he danced and sang in trance on the roads. Many a miracles are associated with his name. His friendship with Madho Lal was so legendry that he is famously known as Madho Lal Hussain.

These inequities and ego are seen exploding in violence everywhere today. Humanity is increasingly growing restive. The arrogant and egoistic are not at pace either. Our scriptures and saint poets have passed on to us the shared wisdom that it is unbecoming of us humans to have aham. In this 9th offering of Saanjhi Virasat, it is time to recall and tune-in to fainting voices of saint poets again.

Learning

As the project comes to completion, I am now more interested in Calligraphy and Arranging type. I still can’t say that I am a great Calligrapher, but I am learning, and I definitely see my future in Calligraphy. I developed a calendar to make people understand the terminologies of Calligraphy and Arranged type. Calligraphy is a medium and I can express the feeling through it, be it loneliness or humor. Evolving, elaborating and understanding the fonts. Hindi and English fonts were difficult to match, I evolved Indic Script, Software for Hindi Asaan typing. I created a print based solution for the Calendar. Duotone are the result of Printing, Calendar reqiured great attention from the printers. I need to learn more in Sizes of Papers in the Market, Printing,Budget, Plan and Costing.
