SUNDAY 29TH NOVEMBER 2020

LIGHT & LIFE

Captain Callum Newton It brings us great sadness to be sharing our first Advent Sunday with you as Aberdeen’s Corps Officers via Castlegate News rather than in person. Advent and Christmas, as we all know from experience, is a really important and busy time for Salvationists. It’s a time of year we get given lots of opportunities to share the gospel as for a short time the world’s attention is turned back towards something of Christ. It’s also a time of year that being together as a family is so important to us and we know there is heartache at the prospect of not being able to see all the family we want to this Christmas. We are sad not to be with our new Corps family over Christmas sharing in worship and celebration as we usually would. That being said, there is light at the end of the tunnel. The great sense of hope in the progression of vaccines to overcome the virus means that the new year may bring ‘A Thought From the Word’ -Page 3Captain Emma Newton revisits the story of Zechariah and Elizabeth as she invites us to expect the unexpected this Christmas.

with it some restoration. We must continue to pray for those working on such projects that we may be reunited in fellowship soon by their endeavours. Since the clocks went back, we have noticed how early it has been getting dark. Moving from the west to the east I think has made a difference in that regard. We have been often leaving the Citadel in the dark as we have headed home this last couple of weeks. But this week we were blessed with lights. The Christmas lights have gone up and they sparkle right down Union Street. They have brought great cheer to the end of long busy days in and around the office. The Citadel has taken part in the switching on ceremony for a number of years and we were very much looking forward to experiencing this for ourselves this year but alas, this too was not to be. That being said, of the very small number of people that were able …Continued Page 2. ‘Book Review’ - Page 8 -

Called to be disciples of Jesus Christ, The Salvation Army United Kingdom Territory with the Republic of Ireland exists to save souls, grow saints and serve suffering humanity. As disciples of Jesus Christ, we will be a Spiritfilled, radical, growing movement, with a burning desire to lead people into a saving knowledge of Jesus Christ, actively serve the community, and fight for social justice. LIGHT & LIFE CONTINUED FROM FRONT to be there on the night, our own Barney Crockett, the Lord Provost, was there to press the button so in at least some way the Corps was still there. The first Christmas lights were created in 1882 by Edward Johnson, a friend and partner of light-bulb inventor Thomas Edison. Although Johnson by no means introduced light as a means of celebrating Christmas. The tradition of making the winter festive with the light and warmth of fire is much older than electricity. For many years, those who could afford to would express their Christmas spirit by lighting candles on trees. In a week where an annual inspection has resulted in the engineer recommending replacement of 34 (!) fire extinguishers at the Citadel, candles on trees makes me nervous at the very thought of it! It is hardly surprising that this tradition resulted in many fires and Johnson’s electric alternative met with much approval. Whatever the facts and circumstances of this very strange year, it will never change the fact that Christ came. It won’t change the fact that God as man came down and moved into our neighbourhood, if I might borrow a phrase from Eugene Peterson. Whilst our community with each other remains fractured by COVID-19,

nothing can overcome our fellowship with God because of Jesus Christ. Christmas cannot be cancelled. You will see on page 9 that we have been working on some way of enabling us to still share in this special time of year together. Whilst this is by no means like anything that would have normally happened, at least it gives the opportunity as a worshipping community to acknowledge the time of year together in a meaningful way. This week as I have looked down the street at the Christmas lights I have been so mindful of the words of the Christmas Carol ‘Hark the Herald Angels Sing’ that say: ‘Light and life to all He brings, Ris’n with healing in His wings.’ Just as the prospect of a Coronavirus vaccine is the light of hope that will restore normal life back to us, Advent is the time when light shines in the darkness to share the hope of full and eternal life that is restored to humanity in the coming of Jesus Christ. Our gospel message for the world this year is surely light, life and healing to all He brings. May we be an example of this light to all we meet and reach out to in this Advent season.

A Thought From the Word

EXPECT THE UNEXPECTED CAPTAIN EMMA NEWTON I wonder when you were last left speechless? Was it because you were in awe, or fear? Shock, or delight?

other encounters in the Old Testament, Zechariah wants a further sign to help him believe the message, because an angel talking to him face to face is not enough! The angel gives a further sign, of silence. So, when Zechariah goes out and sees people again, he can only make signs and gestures to try and explain what he has seen, heard and been promised. How would you describe meeting Gabriel with gestures alone?

In Luke chapter 1 Zechariah is literally left speechless after an angel appears to him, telling him that his elderly wife, Elizabeth, is going to have a baby; a son, to be named John. This is a story which is repeated several times in Scripture, of a married, childless couple, who are visited by an angel with the news that they are to have a baby after all. In Genesis 21 there is the story of Abraham and Sarah. An old couple with no children who are promised that they will have a Zechariah and Elizabeth were not expecting any of this. The son who will impact the future of God’s people. In Genesis 30 and 35 phrase ‘expect the unexpected’ seems a little mild for this Rachel and Jacob waited many years for their two sons. The births of scenario! They were simply devout people, going about Samson (Judges 13) and Samuel (1 Samuel 1) were also heralded by their regular business. But their child was to be born to fulfil an angel speaking to the the biblical promises that mother. CASTLEGATE NEWS -ABERDEEN CITADEL SALVATION ARMY the warm-up act for the coming Messiah, again for whom the phrase ‘expect the unexpected’ is an understatement. This time last year, Callum and I were eagerly anticipating the birth of Isla. For the first time, we understood, personally, a little of the excitement and anticipation Zechariah and Elizabeth must have experienced. We did not have a miraculous announcement, we did not have angels, or promises of who our baby would be, and yet we were still full of joy and hope. This year we face a very different Christmas to what we imagined it might be last year. Whilst we did not know where we would be living, we expected to be singing carols, sharing a Christmas meal with our community and enjoying celebrations with friends and family. We have come to expect the unexpected, and we try to enjoy the surprises rather than be knocked over by them, but that in itself can be very difficult. For you, this Christmas will be unlike you ever imagined it might be. Being asked to expect the unexpected might appear meaningless and a little trite. However, there is a certainty; Jesus Christ will be present with you through the power of the Holy Spirit. The joy is in the unexpected way in which we might encounter Jesus in the days ahead. As we journey through Advent, we have the opportunity to reflect on the surprises of that first Christmas. It is a very familiar story for

Song 107 Hark the glad sound! the Saviour comes, The Saviour promised long; Let every heart prepare a throne, And every voice a song. He comes, the prisoners to release In Satan's bondage held; The gates of brass before Him burst, The iron fetters yield. He comes, the broken heart to bind, The wounded soul to cure, And with the treasures of His grace To enrich the humble poor. Our glad hosannas, Prince of Peace, Thy welcome shall proclaim, And Heaven's eternal arches ring With Thy belovèd name. Philip Doddridge Listen Here: https://youtu.be/9dQt1ed1-B8

PAGE | 4 us, and yet every element of it was a surprise to those who were present. Mary. Joseph. The shepherds. Herod. The Magi. We have lost the unexpected nature of the story, and yet God still acts in ways that are unexpected. Often the answers to our prayers are those which we did not expect. As events in life take an unexpected turn, we find ourselves facing a God-given opportunity, or simply facing God as we cry out for help. During these next four weeks, there will be opportunities to tell people about Jesus. We might not know when, where or how, and yet we need to be ready. Spend some time reading the story, and reflecting on your own story, so that when that unexpected conversation arises, you are ready to share! Zechariah and Elizabeth were ordinary people, going about their ordinary activities. Through these ordinary people, and many more before and after them, we know that God can use us in his bigger story. If you think you are too old; think again. If you think you are too young; think again. If you do not think you have the words, use your actions. Be willing to expect the unexpected and allow God to use your life as a small part of his big story.

Song 158 Who is He in yonder stall, At whose feet the shepherds fall? 'Tis the Lord! O wondrous story, 'Tis the Lord, the king of Glory! At His feet we humbly fall, Crown Him, crown Him Lord of all! Who is He in deep distress, Fasting in the wilderness? Who is He to whom they bring All the sick and sorrowing? Who is He on yonder tree Dies in grief and agony? Who is He who from the grave Comes to succor, help and save? Who is He who from His throne Rules through all the worlds alone? Benjamin R. Hanby Listen here: https://youtu.be/E-SPYAgCtkw

PRAYER MATTERS Thoughts for Prayer

Corps Prayer Diary – November 29th – December 5th

This week (29th Nov – 3rd Dec) is a significant week in our territory and your prayers are much needed as THQ Personnel, Service Heads and Divisional Commanders gather virtually via Zoom for the Territorial Appointments Conference. This is a very intense week of prayer and discussion for all those involved, as decisions are made in respect of new and changing appointments in 2020. There are not enough officers to fill every appointment and so there will be unofficered corps hoping to receive an officer and some corps who may be left without - it's a big challenge.

Please pray - that God's plan and purpose be supreme in all things. Please pray for Lieut-Colonel Beverley McCombe as she heads up the conference in this very difficult year and that our leaders to will be given great discernment and wisdom. May there be a spirit of unity and cooperation and may each know the tangible presence of the Holy Spirit guiding. Pray also for the officers who will be moving, their families and the cadets who will receive their first appointment, that God will place them just where he needs them to be.

As o'er each continent and island The dawn leads on another day, The voice of prayer is never silent, Nor dies the strain of praise away. John Ellerton

ADVENT ALPHABET Major Gethin Thomas (Pentre) AVAILABLE - An angel begins the coming of Jesus to earth. Gabriel comes to an unpromising village, to a girl with a very common name. Mary was as shocked as we sometimes are at God’s choice of her. Her words in Luke 1:38 clearly and loudly declare her availability to God’s plan and purpose: ‘I am the Lord’s servant… May your word to me be fulfilled.’ Lord, may these words be true of me this Advent time: here I am. Amen. BELIEVING - In Luke 1, Mary’s believing response to Gabriel is sharply contrasted with the pedigreed priestly response of Zechariah, the father–to–be of John the Baptist. As an experienced priest he says: ‘How can I be sure of this?’ (v18). Because of his unbelief he was unable to speak for nine months. If we couldn’t talk every time we doubted God, there would be a lot of quiet people around! Think about God’s promise of Jesus. We can believe because Jesus is already here. COMPANIONED - Luke 1:39–56 tells us that after Gabriel visited, ‘Mary got ready and hurried to a town in the hill country… where she entered Zechariah’s home and greeted Elizabeth’ (vv39–40). It was a long, lonely journey, but after the news she has heard, Mary needs the refuge, comfort and wisdom her elderly cousins, especially Elizabeth, could provide. It is during this time that Mary sings her Magnificat (vv46–55). Lord, thank you for the time spent with fellow believers and the awareness they give of what you have done for us, in us and through us. Amen.

DREAMER - Joseph the carpenter, one of the few to be called ‘righteous’ in the Bible, joins the ranks of the Bible dreamers (Matthew 1:20–25; 2:19–20). He didn’t need an angel appearance to change the course of his life, only a dream. Joseph’s prayer, righteous as he was, surely was, in the words of William Himes’s song, ‘Take all my dreams and bend them to your will’ (SASB 568). God answered Joseph’s prayers. Lord, may this be our heartfelt prayer too. Amen. ENRICHED - ‘For you know the grace of our Lord Jesus Christ, that though he was rich, yet for your sake he became poor, so that you through his poverty might become rich’ (2 Corinthians 8:9). Like the Bible personalities we are considering in this Advent Alphabet, have we discovered the true Christmas jackpot that is freely offered to us all? Pray that this Advent you may be spiritually enriched. FAVOURED - Gabriel’s first words to Mary were: ‘Greetings, you who are highly favoured! The Lord is with you’ (Luke 1:28). Mary is favoured before she says ‘yes’ and before she carries the Messiah. Mary had not earned the favour of God, it was offered freely before it could be earned. God, thank you for choosing us for your work, for favouring us because of who we are. We are yours! Amen. Major Thomas’ Advent Alphabet will be continued over the next few weeks.

DIVISONAL LEADERS Major Gillian Jackson (D.C.) & Major Steve Dutfield (D.L.L.D.) Open letter to North Scotland Division (25th November 2020). Dear Friends It is good to greet you as we enter this Advent season. Often we speak of Advent as being a time of waiting, a time of preparation, but from March it seems all we have done is wait. Waiting to hear which tier we are in, waiting to get our hair cut, waiting to see if a vaccine will be discovered and this week, we wait to hear how restrictions might be loosened over the Christmas period. It is such a disappointment to us that we are still waiting to meet many of you. We have visited all your corps leaders and spent time in your corps buildings. We have walked around communities as much as we can, but we have not been able to meet most of you, we are bereft of that sense of connection. As we have come into the division at this time we are so impressed with everything that is going on, the evidence of creativity and innovation is remarkable. The way that corps leaders, soldiers and friends have come together to produce written material, stream services on line and record meetings that are available to everyone is no mean feat. In addition to ongoing food provision and pastoral care it has still been a busy time for many.

many activities being curtailed for the foreseeable future. Please continue to support and pray for your leaders as they make judgement calls on this. As we wait in this season, we are bombarded with ideas for Christmas. Of course, many shops have their own Christmas adverts; perhaps you have a favourite. One of the adverts that has struck a chord with me is the Tesco ad; you may have seen it. Different people feel as though they may be on the naughty list this year, for not donating to Captain Tom, or not washing their hands while singing Happy Birthday, or buying too many loo rolls. As they go through the list, the advert repeatedly says, ‘There is no naughty list this year’. I am sure there are some things we may have done wrong this year, but we do not need to be told there is no naughty list. We know and marvel on the fact that, ‘God so loved the world that He gave His Son, so that whoever believes in Him should not perish but have everlasting life’ (John 3:16). This Advent, while we continue to wait on guidance from the government, we wait, knowing that our sins are forgiven and that we are experiencing the greatest gift of all, the gift of eternal life. May this encourage us, give us hope and peace as we experience the love of God.

In the New Year we hope to meet with you and share worship You may have noticed that The Salvation Army has been together as we look forward to moving through restrictions to intentional at empowering and enabling people in the local new opportunities to minister in Christ’s name. context to make decisions about what is and is not appropriate for them to be doing through the different stages of the Every blessing to you all, pandemic. BOOK REVIEW Norrie Page While in lockdown and in isolation I have done a lot of reading. I have my Dad’s Bible and many a sermon was preached from it as my parents were officers. I also have The Message paraphrase and often read passages from both to compare the original and the new version. I have also been reading ‘In Darkest England 130 Years On’. It’s a very interesting book and I have learnt a lot about the Army that I didn’t know. It’s by various writers who write about the founders vision in the original book and how the army is facing up to it in the present day.

I do have a special interest as one of the sections was written by my son Malcolm Page, Assistant Territorial Director of Homelessness Services. He tells of what The Founder said to his son Bramwell, ‘men are sleeping on the pavement out there go do something’ and Malcolm tells of continuing this work and its problems in trying to keep homeless people off the street. There are more articles that make good reading and may encourage to one day read the original book. ‘In Darkest England 130 Years On’ is available from SP&S at a cost of £8

MUSIC BOX Bandmaster John Still Eric Ball’s Tone Poem “The Kingdom Triumphant” is an appropriate piece for Advent Sunday. It was composed in 1963 for the ISB, under Bernard Adams, to premiere at the Festival of Gospel Song at the Royal Albert hall. Eric Ball wrote in the score notes: “This tone poem is designed to remind listeners of the Christian doctrine of the Second Advent of Christ at the end of this age. Although in one complete movement, the work falls into three main parts: (1) Vision of Judgment (introducing an old-time song, 'The Blast of the Trumpet'); (2) Remembrance of the First Advent ('O Come, O Come, Immanuel'); (3) Vision of the Second Advent ('Lo, He comes with clouds descending').” SASB 117 O come, O come, Immanuel, And ransom captive Israel That mourns in lonely exile here Until the Son of God appear. Rejoice! Rejoice! Immanuel shall come to thee, O Israel. O come, thou dayspring, come and cheer Our spirits by thine advent here; Disperse the gloomy clouds of night And death's dark shadows put to flight: O come, thou key of David, come And open wide our heavenly Home; Make safe the way that leads on high And close the path to misery.

The Kingdom Triumphant is a very popular piece and there are many recordings of it, this is the massed bands of The International Staff Band and Chicago Staff Band playing it - https://youtu.be/WJc2gzikfDw SASB 260 Lo, he comes with clouds descending, Once for favoured sinners slain; Thousand, thousand saints attending, Swell the triumph of his train; Hallelujah!, Hallelujah! Hallelujah! God appears on earth to reign. Yea, amen, let all adore thee High on thine eternal throne; Saviour, take the power and glory, Claim the Kingdom for thine own: Hallelujah!, Hallelujah! Hallelujah! Everlasting God, come down!
