Entertainment at the Show this year includes: The Backwater Band, Xtreme Motorcycle Trials Show, The Ammusionist, Bunnings Children’s Activities, Malachi Frost Sword Swallower and sideshow Artist, Petting Zoo, Pretoria Hotel Showperson Competition, Ute Muster, Wood Turning Display, Blokes and Their Amazing Barbecues and more.

Don’t forget the Bank SA Green and Gold Trail, with lots of goods to collect, and whilst at the Bank SA stand, buy a raffle ticket or two, with lots of great donated prizes on offer.

The Carp throwing Contest is back again, with great cash prizes up for grabs!

SANFL Showdown: Adelaide vs Port Adelaide In Mannum xcitement is building as Mannum prepares to host the first SANFL Showdown in Round 2 of the IGA League competition on Sunday 3rd April. Bitter rivals Adelaide and Port Adelaide will face-off at the Mannum Oval from 1:40pm.

SANFL General Manager, Football Adam Kelly said it was fantastic to showcase the IGA League in regional areas, particularly the Murray Mallee.

“The SANFL is determined to foster its links with football fans in the country, as there are many supporters who are unable to attend SANFL matches in metropolitan areas”, said Adam Kelly.

“We have already witnessed genuine excitement amid a carnival-type atmosphere at previous country SANFL matches and I’m sure the people of Mannum and surrounds will ensure this contest will be no exception.

“We are very appreciative of both Adelaide and Port Adelaide continuing to support the concept of playing an SANFL Showdown across rural South Australia.”

The Mannum Football Club will present the ground at a high standard. Respective club coaches, Port Adelaide’s Chad Cornes and Adelaide’s Heath Younie, inspected the surface and surrounds last week.

At half-time of the SANFL Showdown, there will be supporterfocused activities, including in the IGA Family Friendly Area.

“We are thrilled to be hosting the SANFL IGA League Showdown in Mannum as it will be the second time our Club has hosted an SANFL game”, said Mannum Football Club President, Dave Schellen.

“It will be an excellent opportunity for all of our River Murray Football League youth to watch teams of a high level and we are looking forward to watching some of the AFL-listed players on our

oval.”

The rivalry will be preceded by a rematch of the 2015 RMFL Grand Final, Mannum vs Imperials. Kicking off at about 10am, this will serve as the perfect curtain-raiser for the SANFL Showdown.

Adelaide General Manager of Football Administration Phil Harper said, “Our club has almost 20% (1 in 5) members residing in Regional SA and we hope that taking these games to our people repays them in a small way for their loyalty to our club. “... Mannum (is) part of the River Murray League who have provided our Development Squad with many players, ... including Sam Pfeiffer, Gene Robinson, Matthew Thompson, Justin Smart, Myles Warmington and Mick O’Malley.”

Port Adelaide SANFL Football Operations Manager Scott Peters said, “Port Adelaide was in the region recently to visit schools and health care facilities as part of our AFL community camp, so it is great that we are able to continue that connection with the area through this SANFL game against Adelaide.”

Supporters can purchase one of the hottest River Murray footy tickets on offer with a Showdown VIP package. It includes match entry, oval parking and a two-course luncheon in the Mannum Clubrooms featuring a Q and A session with AFL and SANFL representatives and coaches from both clubs. LGBT Rainbow Flag I would like to voice my concern and surprise to read the Mid Murray Lutheran Parish members are “deeply concerned over the public flying of the LGBT rainbow flag which we consider inappropriate” and “We believe the current practise of the Mid-Murray Council in flying the LGBT flag to be discriminatory and divisive…”

(Letters, February Issue 109).

I was taught that God loves all of us – from all races and creeds, no matter our socioeconomic status and no matter our personal gender identification. Lesbian Gay Bisexual Transgender Intersex (LGBTI) people are some of the most discriminated against in our society and just the fact that this group have the highest rate of suicide of any group in Australia is reason enough to fly the flag proudly, particularly in Australia’s rural regions where we know isolation and exclusion are so common and mental ill health is sadly so prevalent. It is not a religious symbol and cannot be compared to flying a religious flag. Unfortunately, no matter the great work done by our churches everywhere, the despicable deeds perpetrated by men, in the name of and under the powerful status of organised religions, has marred the reputation of religions in general for many of us.

The LGBTI flag, represents thousands of people in every religious group. In the modern age, educated people of diversity, acceptance and inclusion need to be respected and celebrated.

I was deeply disturbed by the long letter (Letters, February Issue 109) from the Lutheran Parish Council and considering the content, found it ironic that page 4 held the article by Rev. Darren Lovell promoting Gods Love, complete with a quote from Mark 12:28-31: Jesus gave us two commandments Love God and Love your

I don’t believe it said ‘love your neighbour only if his life style doesn’t make you uncomfortable’.

Is Christianity not a Religion of Love and Tolerance?

Seems to me that the Lutherans are showing a distinct lack of Christian values in their attitude to the flying of the Rainbow Flag and the LGBT community.

The only thing discriminatory and divisive about the situation is their attitude.

And I don’t remember anyone complaining about the flying by council of the International Christian flag (page 14).

This is not just a country of Christians! Australia and the Mid Murray contains a diversity of people and beliefs that goes so far beyond the narrow minded, blinkered bigotry of some of our local Christian population and I for one am tired of having Christianity shoved down my throat. If ‘Heaven’ is more of the same I’ll be glad to not go there.

Perhaps the local Christians could channel their efforts into caring for their ‘Gods’ creation, this beautiful planet that we share. And speaking of sharing, I would like to share two of my favourite Bible quotes (both from the King James Bible) and some food for thought.

No man can serve two masters: for either he will hate the one, and love the other; or else he will hold to the one, and despise the other. Ye cannot serve God and mammon.

And again I say unto you, It is easier for a camel to go through the eye of a needle, than for a rich man to enter into the kingdom of God. Sermon over.

I would like to finish with a couple of questions. Why is it necessary at a ‘community consultation’ to have a football player speak to the assembled people? And was it a paid gig?

I understand that football has an almost religious status but a community consultation is about ‘consulting’ the community not wasting their time with twaddle.

No Noa No Camping I am writing to you in regards to the area adjacent to which I live, that is, in the Noa No Landing area. Over the past years on many occasions I have reported in person to the Mid Murray Council office at Mannum that the ‘NO CAMPING’ sign in the boat ramp area has been cut down after holiday weekends.

This year has been no different, the sign has been removed on three occasions already. For example it was erected on a Wednesday and yet it was missing by the following weekend. On the Australia Day weekend there were a least seven [7] car loads of campers at the landing, for the duration of the weekend.

As you will be aware there are no toilet facilities at the boat ramp, so I raise the question of where did the campers go to conduct bodily functions and ablutions.

It is not only the campers, but there are people launching and retrieving boats all year round with no toilet facilities. If the Mid Murray Council is not prepared to provide toilets the landing should be shut down, or at least regulated and checked upon.

People do not realise there is a cesspool adjacent to the river bank, just up river from the town.

On the last occasion I went to the Mid Murray Council office, I requested to speak to somebody with authority in regards to this ongoing issue.

As on other times all that was done was they erected a new sign and hoped the problem would go away.

The problem has not gone

away by simply erecting another sign. Perhaps penalties should apply to regular offenders, warnings and fines should be issued. Alternatively, the Council should upgrade the area and charge site fees for overnight campers.

I recently spoke to the Mid Murray Council Ranger and he asked me why I “did not ring him while it was happening.” I had no idea who to ring.

Besides it is not my place to do his job. I thought I was doing the right thing by reporting it to the Council office during business hours.

Furthermore, on Australia Day 2016, during a total fire ban season on a hot and windy day, there was a “camp” fire organised at the Landing, which could have been devastating to all surrounding areas.

I would like the Mid Murray Council to investigate and regularly police the Landing. I am an adjacent neighbour and rate payer and believe that this must be addressed as a matter of urgency, preferably before Easter 2016.

Aminya Mid Murray Homes for the Aged

he Hon Tony Pasin, MP, Member for Barker, officially opened the 18 additional places as well as the recently completed secure memory support unit and the general purpose room.

Approximately 70 people attended the opening with the Board Chairman, Mr Peter Raison welcoming Mr Pasin, residents and members of the public.

The Chairman advised that all 50 places were now occupied with a further five registrations of interest having been placed on a waiting list.

Mr Raison reported that advice on the Board’s application for 10 additional places was expected during March. Cr Jeff Hall addressed the gathering on behalf of the Mid Murray Council.

An advertisement has been placed for the Care Manager position at Aminya. The Board expects to be in a position to make an appointment towards the end of March.

The Friends of Aminya group have been very active with the recent major raffle which was won by Janet

Anderson. The group has recently established outdoor settings in the new courtyard, an activity area for residents in the new general purpose room and is fitting out the secure memory support unit.

These ongoing contributions are greatly appreciated and of benefit to residents.

Landscaping of the new area is being scheduled for March.

The assistance of the Mid Murray Landcare group in arran g in g the design, propagation and planting out is very welcome.

Resid ents, staff and volunteers welcomed players and officials from the Port Adelaide Football Club on Tuesday 9th February. This provided opportunities for many residents, tenants and staff to interact with the players.

Aminya currently has a one bedroom independent living unit available for rent.

Mental Health Carer Support and Respite niting Communities Carer Support and Respite Service aims to assist families and individuals to develop a range of skills and strategies in a flexible manner to help support their family member with the mental health challenge.

Sometimes everything can seem to get on top of us and as a carer you may feel overwhelmed and not know which way to turn. By talking with the Uniting Communities Peer Support Worker who has lived through the experience of caring for a person with a mental health challenge, you can share in a safe and caring environment and be provided social emotional and/or practical support to you in your caring role.

This is a free and confidential service. No diagnosis is required. You can self refer or be referred by another service provider.

PS Marion and Mannum Dock Museum

nother busy year for the Mannum Dock Museum kicked off in January when the PS Marion cruised for three days during the Australia Day celebrations. During the quiet times volunteers were able to clean and repaint the starboard paddle box and also give the cabins a good spruce up.

Australia Day in Mannum is always well attended with Mannum Lions serving nearly 600 breakfasts. Breakfast participants received a $5 deduction special on cruise tickets which ensured good numbers on the four 1 hour cruises on the PS Marion, skippered by Alan Boman.

Volunteers at the Mannum Dock Museum are seeing real progress with the restoration of the PB Mayflower. Most of the main deck has been completed, wood has been steamed and fixed in a curve to follow the hull shape. The caulking and sanding is done, and looks good. The rebuilt diesel motor, gear box and chain drive have now been reinstalled. A very committed band of volunteers have commenced dismantling the upper floor to be replaced with new timber which Rob Bowring (Chairman of the MDM) reports is scheduled to start during February. At this stage all the volunteers are feeling pleased with the way

renovations are progressing.

The Women of the River Co u n tr y Exhib itio n is concluding this month, and the Museum committee is meeting on 1st March to discuss the next exhibitions to be set up in the Arnold Gallery – watch this space.

School excursions are also beginning to be booked for the MDM with the Hewitt school visiting in March. Volunteer Marg Dowley has scheduled a meeting for excu r sion volunteers on Thursday 25th September. Marg also takes Princess and Proud Mary passengers on tour around the Museum most weekends.

• Treasurer Peter Smith: Peter has been involved in the Big River competition and served 7 Years as a councillor.

• Secretary Janice Bock: Janice has experience in training and Assessment, WHandS and major grant management.

• Members David Rosenberg, a long term resident to Mannum, was involved in the inception of the Mannum Kindergarten.

Lloyd Tonkin, the Team Leader for our regional ambulance service covering from Lameroo to the hills districts. Lloyd works with children and is committed to giving our community the skills he has to offer.

Joy Marks, recently the recipient of the “School Ministry’s Group Builder Award”, is dedicated to assisting with our youth and community.

Peter Kuhlmann, a retired builder, has provided one year of service to the MMSS Board.

Peter is a valuable volunteer providing numerous hours on projects.

Christmas Gifts Christmas can be a tough time for a lot of us, but especially for people isolated and living on the streets. We would like to thank the community for donating and placing gifts under our Christmas tree. We know these gifts made a big difference to families in need.

Domestic Assistance and Home Maintenance needs more volunteers. If you can spare a few hours a month, this would benefit your community greatly Social Support. Sign up for our new MMSS Buddies Program-Help out by providing respite for just an hour or two to allow carers a short but needed break.

• In July to November 2015 MMSS Volunteers provided the local community with 7121 hours of volunteer time to enable the aged community to live independently longer.

• MMSS staff, in addition to their paid hours, have volunteered 2723 recorded hours in the same 3 month period.

Dear Dr. Laura Thank you for doing so much to educate people regarding God’s Law. I have learned a great deal from your show, and try to share that knowledge with as many people as I can. When someone tries to defend the homosexual lifestyle, for example, I simply remind them that Leviticus 18:22 clearly states it to be an abomination. End of debate. I do need some advice from you, however, regarding some other elements of God’s Laws and how to follow them.

1. Leviticus 25:44 states that I may possess slaves, both male and female, provided they are purchased from neighboring nations. A friend of mine claims that this applies to Mexicans, but not Canadians. Can you clarify?

2. I would like to sell my daughter into slavery, as sanctioned in Exodus 21:7. In this day and age, what do you think would be a fair price for her?

3. I know that I am allowed no contact with a woman while she is in her period of menstrual uncleanliness, Lev.15: 19-24. The problem is, how do I tell? I have tried asking, but most women take offense.

4. When I burn a bull on the altar as a sacrifice, I know it creates a pleasing odor for the Lord, Lev.1:9. The problem is my neighbors. They claim the odor is not pleasing to them. Should I smite them?

5. I have a neighbor who insists on working on the Sabbath. Exodus 35:2 clearly states he should be put to death. Am I morally obligated to kill him

myself, or should I ask the police to do it?

6. A friend of mine feels that even though eating shellfish is an abomination, Lev. 11:10, it is a lesser abomination than homosexuality. I don’t agree. Can you settle this? Are there ‘degrees’ of abomination?

7. Lev. 21:20 states that I may not approach the altar of God if I have a defect in my sight. I have to admit that I wear reading glasses. Does my vision have to be 20/20, or is there some wiggle-room here?

8. Most of my male friends get their hair trimmed, including the hair around their temples, even though this is expressly forbidden by Lev. 19:27. How should they die?

9. I know from Lev. 11:6-8 that touching the skin of a dead pig makes me unclean, but may I still play football if I wear gloves?

10. My uncle has a farm. He violates Lev.19:19 by planting two different crops in the same field, as does his wife by wearing garments made of two different kinds of thread (cotton/polyester blend). He also tends to curse and blaspheme a lot. Is it really necessary that we go to all the trouble of getting the whole town together to stone them? Lev.24:10-16.

Couldn’t we just burn them to death at a private family affair, like we do with people who sleep with their in-laws?

(Lev. 20:14) I know you have studied these things extensively and thus enjoy considerable expertise in such matters, so I’m confident you can help.

Christmas Tree Festival he debrief and handover has happened.

It was a great festival as was reported in last month’s magazine. Once again thanks to all those who helped in any way, both in the organisation and on the day.

The float of decorated trees in the pageant the next week was also a worthwhile effort and thanks must go to those involved.

The Friends of Aminya and Mannum Interchurch Council chaplaincy program are thankful for the donations they received from our festival.

Start planning for this year’s Christmas Tree Festival and look out for the planning meeting next August in St Martins Lutheran Church kitchen at 10 am on the 16th. Put it in your diary now and invite others to be involved.

Mannum Men’s Shed

T

he blokes in the Shed are a great bunch and welcome all men of our community to drop by. We spend a lot of time around the table swapping stories and drinking a hot tea or coffee, but the blokes also use their skills for others.

Have you noticed the piano situated at the bottom of the Golden Stairs. It is in a weather proof frame designed and built by the blokes at the Shed for the Mid Murray Council. This was a large project and needed a truck to move it to its final

position.

Some projects are small. One of the blokes enjoys making wooden pull-along toys. His latest was a pair of dinosaurs that rock and roll as they move.

These have been posted to England for a young child to enjoy.

Whether it’s wood work, metal work, carving, electronics or anything else that is a blokes interest (of course no need to mention “talking”) he is welcome at The Shed.

s mentioned in February’s news, the club is going to reintroduce the old style Cabaret. Due to various circumstances the date has now changed to Saturday 14th May from 8–12pm, with the local band Steppin Back providing a mix of 60/40 music. There will be a small charge of $10, which includes a supper. Bar facilities will be available.

The numbers are limited to 100 so be early and make up a table. You can contact:

A small group attended a regatta at West Lakes on the 23rd January, winning a couple of races in doubles and fours and combining with Phoenix RC in a mixed eight.

Mannum’s Regatta has been scheduled for 2nd April, with a river closure being implemented for the day.

Out Of This World Astronomer’s Corner

verhead after 10:30 pm, in the constellation Canis Major (the greater dog), one of the two of Orion the hunter, is the brightest star Sirius. A little more north, near the Celestial Equator, is the star Procyon, which from the Greek means before the dog (before Canis Major). Procyon is near our sun and helps as a marker along with Regulus (on the ecliptic) to define the location of the celestial equator and its relationship to the planets and the ecliptic.

Rising on the eastern horizon is the star Spica, preceded by the constellation Corvus (the Crow). The 12th hour celestial meridian starts at the pole star and nears the main body of the Southern Cross, extending to the side of Corvus, and then nearing the Star Denebola in the tail of Leo the lion. Finding the stars and constellations in this way provides fixed reference points for observing the motion of the planets against the fixed star background.

At present the largest planet Jupiter is near the tail of Leo the lion and predominant in our evening sky at a very bright magnitude of around -2.5.

The planet Venus, at magnitude -3.8, is moving from Capricorn into Aquarius. The planet Mars is moving from Libra into Scorpious, at a less bright magnitude of -0.1. In the eastern evening sky half way through March, good viewing conditions are needed to find Saturn at 0.4 magnitude (in Ophiuchus then Scopius).

The inner planets Mercury and Venus (often called inferior) move a lot faster than the planets of the outer realm (often called superior), passing more constellations in a given period. These planets are also going through phases as they near the sun. The terms conjunction, quadrature and elongation related to this motion need to be explored further as they can get complex.

Mental Musings oung and old alike seem to feel that life is just rushing us along, sometimes faster than we really like. Where has this year gone? Autumn has arrived and this correspondent didn’t even find or make time to muse on last month before summer ended. We all need “down time”, as some call it, and it’s worth making it happen.

In Mannum we’re so fortunate to be able to see a beautiful sunrise and sunset, depending on our body clocks. The river, murky though it may be, observing its ever-changing appearance due to the weather, human and bird life, can be helpful to musing about many things.

Let’s not forget to be thankful for what we have, because millions have nothing, often not of their own actions. Let’s muse and then do something, for someone unknown outside our town or country and maybe someone nearby as well.

Random Acts of Kindness are actually good for us as well and so is volunteering when you’re in the right place.

Mused on, what can we do for our neighbour, town or area?

When we feel happy or pleased about what we’re doing endorphins are released and they are nature’s antidepressants.

All this is good for our community too.

Devils in White ittle Corellas, nimble and fleet, announcing their presence with raucous screeching, alighting in gums to rest for the night, jostling for the best seats, re-arranging the furniture till well after the sun sets – hundreds of them, or thousands? Next morning’s lawns are littered with discarded branchlets.

Corellas; hanging like circus clowns from seeding wattle trees, eating and feasting, drunk on excess. Then I see my peach tree. I become a wailing banshee and a dozen devils-in-white rise in wheeling confusion, leaving the ground pock-marked with small green peaches.

Within days, neighbours resurrect old flat-iron sheets, monstrous saucepans, Chinese gongs and flashing torches. Corellas wear out their welcome quickly.

Visiting friends conclude that we must be away on holidays as their tyres scrunch over summer-scorched branchlets disguising our driveway. The couch paddock behind our home is a carpet of industry each morning as they dig their beaks into soil, secateuring white roots, discarding emergent grassy tufts – while the neighbour’s horse watches in dismay. Corellas exclude him from the water trough until mid-day heat sends them back to their tree perches. Silence, as the sun encourages all to seek refuge. I glance up into the back door sugar gum.

Twenty enquiring eyes stare back benignly. I laugh; must be the larrikin in me.

As the sun dips low, a clamorous din from nearby pines reminds me that another favoured food is being checked and plundered. They must believe they’ve found heaven, here in Riverglades … except for those damn annoying neighbours who won’t settle down for the night! It’s raining up north. Maybe they’ll hear the news soon?

Mary Ann Reserve ary Ann Reserve has been developed to cater for the needs of all residents within the Mid Murray Council Districts and visitors to the area, to ensure all can enjoy this pristine river front Reserve.

Within the development of the Reserve, particular attention has been made to ensure effective management of the river’s edge for swimmers and recreation vessels to all utilise this Reserve in a safe manner.

In doing so, the Mid Murray Council have identified defined areas along the river’s edge where houseboats may moor for a 24 hour period, to provide valuable access to the Reserve and the shopping precinct along Randell Street.

Council’s Regulatory Services staff undertake regular inspections of the Reserve to ensure all users are complying with the restrictions along the Reserve, ensuring the safety of the community within compliance of the regulated areas. Council requests that members of the public, and operators of all vessels within this Reserve area, comply with the prominent signage along the Reserve.

Mannum RSL he restoration of the cemetery plaques has been completed at last. Over 80 were done and look really good. We and the Mannum community must thank Tim Male and his staff at T R Male Transport Pty. Ltd. for their support in transporting the plaques to Melbourne and return. A job very much appreciated.

The next task at the cemetery is to plant new trees and shrubs to complete the extension.

We can report now that the license to share occupancy of the rowing club has been signed.

We finally have a home for at least the next 21 years. We can now go forward and hopefully grow.

ANZAC DAY is getting closer. If there is anyone out there who can play the bagpipes and anyone who can play the bugle or knows of someone, and would be willing to help out on Anzac Day, could you please ring our President John Doughty on 0405 159 855. This day has been getting bigger each year and it

would be a nice touch to have the pipes and bugle to compliment the service.

Nine of our members attended Echunga RSL recently for a social day. A pleasant day was had by all. Various other clubs were also in attendance.

Don’t forget our Wednesday “Happy Hour”.

Every Wednesday at the RSL clubrooms from 4pm. Drop in for a drink and chat etc. All guests are very welcome.

Come along and enjoy a social gathering by the river.

One hundred years ago, page 6 of the Adelaide newspaper Daily Herald, on Thursday 6th April 1916, reported this story of Mannum:

ACCIDENT TO MANNUM COACH

A sensational accident occurred to the Adelaide to Mannum coach yesterday.

When near Inglewood it ran into a post on the roadside with such force that the pole broke and the five horses attached to the coach, becoming frightened, bolted. The driver was thrown out and several of the occupants jumped from the vehicle and all escaped without serious injury. The runaway horses rushed along towards the coach coming in the opposite direction, which was due about that time, and owing to the promptitude and presence of mind of the driver, what might have been a serious accident was averted.

Mannum Barbershop Going Back to its Roots!

n 1912 a barbershop was built in Mannum Main Street. Up until a few years ago, it had always been a barbershop, and now will be again.

Locals remember the old barbershop in the Main Street of Mannum from their childhood. It

had always been there, until a few years ago when the premises were converted to offices. Now the local Mannum Barber is restoring it to a barber shop.

Petrea Sanchez started a new Mannum Barber in 2012 and has become a local fixture, along with her trusty companion, Mack the barber dog; a black kelpie that all the locals know and love. They always say, if Mack is sitting on the step, the barber shop is open.

Petrea will be moving the business from its current premises to the restored barbershop at 59 Randell Street, Mannum, in March 2016.

A

nyone interested in singing in a choir is warmly invited to join the Mannum Community Singers, an informal group that meets twice a month. We will build up a repertoire of both sacred and secular pieces, with the aim of enjoying group singing, and being available for performing in church services or community events (such as Carols by the River) as the occasion arises. The ability to read music is an advantage, but not essential – the main

requirement is a love of singing.

Meetings are held in St Martins Lutheran Church, 82 Cliff St, Mannum. In March, we will meet on the first and third Monday (7th and 21st March), but after that it will be the second and fourth Monday of each month, at 6:30 pm, for about an hour and a half.

Making Mannum Memorable n my continuing column about notable newbies, I am delighted to ‘officially’ welcome to our fine town, the McLarens: Robyn, Darren and their daughter, Georgia.

While young, Robyn’s parents ran hotels in Mt Gambier, North Adelaide and Burra, so she necessarily attended several schools but finished at Modbury High. Her working life has centred on accounting and finance, with stints at the ATO, Bank SA and, these days, People’s Choice Credit Union, where she works three days a week in The Big Smoke. She enjoys going to the flicks with friends, and is responsible for Georgia’s love of all things equine. Robyn’s and Darren’s work does impede on immediate travel plans, but they intend to enjoy extensive exploration of the UK, USA and Canada in the future.

After attending Woodville High, Darren has worked in the ‘oil industry’, firstly with Castrol, which was then taken over by BP. Now Chemical Manager for BP at the Holden factory, Darren envisages enjoying semi-retirement when Holden closes in late 2017 on local golf courses and avoiding the dreaded daily commute. In his spare time, he enjoys gazing at our pollution-free skies through his telescope and restoring his Matchless motorbike and beloved Sandman panel van from the 1970s. And Darren – with Robyn clutching tightly as pillion – has hurtled along the Great Ocean Road,

among other places, as motorcycling “grey nomads”.

Their daughter Georgia finished her schooling at St Michael’s College in Adelaide, where several “good and terrible” teachers inspired her in contrasting ways to pursue a career in education. She completed her teaching degree last year at Uni SA, with practical stints in schools at Brompton, Allenby Gardens and Henley – and, most recently, at Mannum, where she clearly impressed enough to be offered a full-time job this year to teach science and maths to middle school students, and to assist Year 12s with their research projects.

Georgia shares a love of travel with her mother, recently spending our summer in the shivering European winter, and has joined the Mannum netball club. But much of Georgia’s spare time is devoted to her horse, Buddy, which now shares their property with a 27-year-old nag left by the previous owners. Georgia intends being involved in the local pony club, although Buddy suffers from “laziness”, and they will attend a mustering course this year as Georgia is a wannabe jillaroo.

From 20 years of holiday camping at Purnong, and with Darren’s cousin resident in Murray Bridge, the McLarens were aware of Mannum and the attractions of our riverside lifestyle. After searching for the perfect rural property elsewhere for three years, they recently settled into a 22-acre property with groves of neglected olive trees on the outskirts of Mannum (although Georgia’s older brother, Josh, preferred to stay in the city). All three love the community feel, delighting in the affability of locals at the netball club, school and Beachy’s pub, and “never want to go back” to live in Adelaide.

Musical Miscellany The King

tatistics only tell part of a story.

With Elvis, as with almost any singer from the fifties onwards, there are so many different assemblies of data available that they can be used to tell almost any story that the user wishes to tell. However whichever way they are assembled, the history of popular recordings made by Elvis show him to be at the very top of the tree.

Elvis recorded for two labels. Sun Records and RCA. When he shifted to RCA, at the instigation of Colonel Tom Parker, RCA bought the Sun Records Elvis catalogue. Thereafter at varying intervals RCA re-released the Sun material on various Elvis compilations.

Part of the confusion as to how many hits and number ones Elvis had arises from the fact that some of these were counted as R and B hits or Country hits.

In the UK if both sides of a disc scored number one it was counted as only one hit whereas in the US it counted as two.

Confusing? Sure is.

Some of Elvis’s hits included Heartbreak Hotel, Hound Dog, Jail House Rock and Love Me Tender.

During the time Elvis was working for

Uncle Sam, recordings were still released. RCA, determined to keep alive the golden goose, had made a stockpile of recordings which they released during the service period of Elvis. Several of these made it to the top keeping the King’s name before his public. Titles to reach number one or the top ten included A Fool Such as I, Big Hunk o’ Love It’s Now or Never and Are You Lonesome Tonight? Fairly obviously his style was being changed.

He became more of a ballad singer, moving away from the more controversial style of his initial period.

This meant that when he returned to civilian life his future was there before him and he moved seamlessly into a new persona. Top records from the early sixties included Wooden Heart, Return to Sender, Good Luck Charm and Devil in Disguise. The hits were few after that but Elvis moved on to other things such as appearances in Las Vegas.

Elvis was interested in a film career from very early in his public life. His first film was “Love Me Tender”. It was originally titled “The Reno

Brothers”. Then came “Loving You”, “Jailhouse Rock” and “King Creole”.

Again after military service the style of film changed with most of them formulaic musicals with lots of girls and lots of Elvis. Such films included “Blue Hawaii”, “Follow That Dream” and “Girls, Girls, Girls”. He did try two more serious roles in “Flaming Star” and “Wild in the Country” but they were not very successful so he returned to the tried and true formula. Critics dismissed the films as “…a pantheon of bad taste …”. Still, the bean counters loved them and nearly all were profitable. Hal Wallis, producer of some Elvis films, said “A Presley picture is the only sure thing in Hollywood.”

If you have a greater interest in Elvis then there is plenty of literature to satisfy your need. The Internet, particularly Wikipedia, contains much information including film and sound bites.

MAY 17TH SUNDAY Sterne to dinner. Considered the acquirement of wealth by Christians at afternoon Bible Class. Walked down Jeffcott St to old house but could not get in. Walked home feeling particularly wretched with head aching. Eliza taking tea at Burdens’ and Annie with Miss Good at Brougham Place. Stayed home and read.

Head better. Eliza brought home a beautiful photo of Misses Alice, Kate and Florence Burden (Group).

MAY 19TH TUESDAY Garden work. Rode in to Office with Alfred, both on machines. Busy. North Adelaide at 7pm, meeting of “Lookout Committee” of Endeavour Society.

Endeavour Prayer meeting at 7.30. Acting for President (being Vice President) gave the right hand of welcome to

two new members - Misses Webber and Dredge associate members. Presided over meeting of Executive Committee.

MAY 2OTH WEDNESDAY Garden work. Fine day.

Home 6pm. Buying material for Polly who is “of age” today. Keen and brilliant night. No rain! The Lord send it! To Tynte St with sisters.

Attended social to welcome Miss Poppin, a returned missionary from India and a member of our Church.

Helped to distribute provisions, the latter presided over by Miss Flo Burden, Eliza and others.

MAY 25TH MONDAY White called by appointment, with him and Alfred on our bicycles to Walkerville and inspected lemon grove. Breakfast, news, worked on garden, path making all day. Weather hot.

After tea, music. Several friends came by - Burdens,

Hales, Miss McLean and C.P. Moody. Pleasant evening.

MAY 27TH WEDNESDAY Busy at office till 12.30.

Home to dinner. Felt a bit out of sorts. Home to tea about 6.

Brought home Frank Burden’s latest letter from China Mission.

JUNE 5TH FRIDAY Our laborer is much improving on garden ground.

Office as usual. With White to Seedsman at lunch time re lemon trees. Home from office 5.45, dined. To North Adelaide with sisters, called on Bennetts and Hendrys.

Walk with Hendry discussing difficulties and Christian consolations. Poor old Hendry seemed glad of our conversation. Home 9.45.

Frosty night. Studied “Hearing and Doing’‘ for Tuesday.

JUNE 6TH SATURDAY Cut wood to get warm, bath, very cold. Busy till 12. To Woodville, dined with Lou and children. then to Hindmarsh, sundry business, then back to office. Home on machine. To the old house, 60 Jeffcott St. and with Mrs Wordwick’s permission took away young fruit trees. Tea. Very cold. Misses Bennetts and Smith (Blind) present.

JUNE 9TH TUESDAY Worked in garden. Cold.

Home on Bike. Collided with a man on City bridge, but without injury. Dined.

Endeavour meeting at 7.30. I presided and conducted a “Bible talk” on “Hearing and Doing” and that doing the will of God is always accented by Christ above all else. Home 9.40.

Down to Earth The Community Garden At The Hub

he little community garden at the Hub has been very thirsty over our particularly dry summer and some gardeners are breathing a big sigh of relief that autumn is here. As we know this doesn’t always mean the heat blasts are over so the gardeners will continue the extra attention to ensure the plants have the right amount to drink.

We have been rewarded by a very pretty, and pretty sassy looking, row of naked ladies blooming along the pathway, whereas only one peeked out shyly last season. The hanging plants have survived under their shade house, the geranium garden and succulents are healthy and will boom through the coming cooler months. The citrus trees are definitely happy in their new home since their transplants and there will be some fat, and we hope juicy, grapefruits to ward off our winter colds.

The most important thing we can all do to keep our garden

growing is to give something back in return for what we enjoy. Thanks goes to those who bring something to plant, or make a small gold coin donation, for the benefit of picking something flavoursome straight from the vine. It is a labour of love for the gardeners and it is great to see people popping in for a chat and a bit of a pick.

The rhubarb, tomatoes and herbs are thriving and where there are small yields, considerate, thrifty picking is advised. The gardeners recommend we be gentle when plucking a flower to ensure the bulb itself stays in place, so it can continue to multiply in strength and produce. And they reckon, if we nurture them gently and pretend not to notice, next season all the naked ladies will feel confident enough to appear! True story.

Thought for the day: “If your ears are burning, you need a better hat!”

Mannum Grace Mission Why Mannum Grace Mission (MGM)? he MGM concept began from the thoughts of a few Mannum Christians who had concerns that: 1. The socio-economic situation in Mannum was creating a problem where it is obvious that many people, over a wide span of age groups and for various reasons, were having life difficulties and needed help.

2. The help could come from a Christian-based welfare group made up of local volunteers, Christian and non-Christian.

3. The group would work on: • Providing day to day living provisions and anything else needed that it can supply.

• Providing Christian advice when invited, but the primary role would be to assist people with needed living supplies.

4. That there are people who may have had an association with a Church and for various reasons left, and some who may consider having an association. How can they best achieve this with a reasonably seamless re-entry or entry. (A soft return.)

5. Sundays are Church days. Would consideration be given to alternative service times to suit today’s life and working styles.

These and many other thoughts, conversations and observations led to MGM. Times have changed and some Australians have a much different view towards the Christian Church than before.

For those who may like to engage or re-engage with the church, many are not sure what they are engaging with. It is either the traditional or modern formats and unfortunately, in some cases, the invitation is not all that obvious except for the “All Welcome” on the front sign. Some of the Mannum Churches have declining congregations for various reasons including, but not solely, the changing attitude towards the church, the non-replacement of ageing congregations by younger generations and a lack of new people seeking faith through the church.

The remaining faithful are not physically capable of carrying out some activities while being very active in those that they can.

It is acknowledged that the Mannum churches do perform various forms of Christian outreach inclusive of, but not confined to, food assistance, op-shops, school mentoring, letting out their facilities, services and gifts both publicised and unpublicised. Our community would be lacking if it were not for the generosity of these churches for their past and current services.

The Christian churches, including those in Mannum, face a new challenge to no longer live within their own four walls, but to

actively reach out; go out to the people who do not just need salvation, but physical day to day assistance to make their way in this world. They are all ages, from the very old to the very young, and they need our help.

Nothing will be achieved by expecting needy people to come to us; we have to go out to them and that is MGM’s mission.

We need to put an operating team together and March 26th is the deadline. It is that team which will set up MGM and get it moving. If you have that helping heart beating away, then please consider carefully being part of the team.

Here are some of the projects in mind for MGM. • A non-perishable food bank.

• Clothing depository.

• General needs depository. Furniture, linen, blankets, toys, etc.

• Food cards for supermarkets.

• Cooked food.

• The practical list is endless, even sending birthday and Christmas cards to the aged and lonely in our community.

Once the team is formed then it will be so much easier to spread the word. For now, it just needs you to make that first call or email.

Challenging and Exciting Times Ahead

hese days we hear a lot about children learning through the importance of play. People in the community may not be aware the Mannum Kindergarten hosts a community Toy Library with quality toys available for anyone in the Mid Murray area to borrow.

The Toy Library is ideal for families of young children, particularly aged 0-5 years and is a great way to help parents and caregivers get involved in children’s activities. The fee is only $4 per term or $15 per year – an affordable entertainment option at an age where children may not already have their own collection. The carefully

chosen toys aid the physical, emotional and social development of children in our community.

The Mannum Toy Library is operated by helpful volunteers and is open Monday morning during school term. Children are encouraged to exchange toys weekly to ensure they remain interested, and more than one item at a time can be borrowed. With a generous sponsorship from the Murraylands Apex Club, the Mannum Toy Library has recently reinvigorated its marketing to ensure we get the word out about this wonderful community asset.

Ladies Div. 2: In second position they will play their semi-final at Murray Bridge.

The Preliminary Final will be played on 3rd March and the Grand Final on 10th March.

With only three games left to play, the Saturday Men’s Pennant sides are all favourites to remain in the final four. Divisions 1, 2 and 3 (Green) are all currently in second position and Div. 3 (Gold) is in third

position.

We don’t have a Church and we don’t assume we are the only right ones, but we endeavour to base our living on the Bible and not to misinterpret it.

Some people have been so hurt that any Church is the opposite to a comfort zone. With MGM there are no big doors to walk through if you want to return, or be introduced for the first time. We meet in selected groups to talk our way through the tangles.

You can come back softly with like minded people, minus the tensions of a today’s Church.

We won’t preach at each other. We will meet not just on Sunday, but when we can. During the week, as individuals, as families with the kids for a picnic or barbie, or a serious get together. It is a question of what we have in front of us.

MGM is for the people who want to return to Church but to a caring, sharing Church without the other church stuff.

MGM is about doing, and caring, for those who need help.

Myth Versus Reality What is An Earthquake?

n the two previous articles, Rainbow and Sun, we looked at the fantastical mythical fantasies of our early ancestors as they attempted to interpret unexplainable phenomena and then went on to examine the scientific reality available to us today.

As in the previous articles, I ‘dips me lid’ to Prof. Richard Dawkins’ book, The Magic of Reality.

The Myths Today we have a pretty good handle on the subject of ‘plate tectonics’, but for early man, “in the beginning” is the myth. The earthquake had to be caused by something and different cultures at different times have created an extraordinarily diverse array of mythical explanations. Turn the clock back a few centuries to before European settlement in New Zealand and we find the Maoris believed that Mother Earth was pregnant with her child, the god Ru. Whenever baby Ru kicked or stretched inside his mother’s womb there was an earthquake.

Japan, on the other hand, has a colourful myth which suggests the land floated on the back of a gigantic catfish called Namazu.

Whenever he flipped his tail the earth would shake. Well, we of the River have a giant fish called Ponde carving out the Murray.

Some Siberian tribes imagined the earth sat on a sledge driven by a god called Tull. The dogs were thought to have fleas and when they scratched there was an earthquake. A bit

shaggy, this one.

One myth we can relate to is West African.

The legend holds that the earth is a giant disc held up at one point by a great mountain and at another point by a huge giant whose wife holds up the sky. Yep! When they hug each other the earth moves. Wouldn’t you know it?

Oh well, every great Myth faces, in time, reduction to the bare bones of truth.

There are more wonderful earthquake myths of course, but the explanation that plate tectonics provides is breathtakingly right under our feet.

The Reality Again, space availability demands condensation of a mighty big subject, so let’s cut to the chase and discuss ‘continental drift’.

It’s only about 100 years ago a German scientist, Alfred Wagner, suggested that the continents actually drifted about like gigantic ships. Later, the modern theory of Plate Tectonics, supported by much evidence, sees the whole crust of the earth, including the bottom of the seas, as a complete set of interlocking plates. In fact there is no part of the earth’s surface that isn’t part of a plate.

While most of the area of the plates lies under the sea, the land masses we know as the Continents are the high ground of the plates above the water. Now imagine Australia as a land mass sitting on a much larger plate adjacent to the African plate which is much larger than the African landmass. Then picture the African plate adjacent to the

South American plate on which sits the South American continent and you start to see the plate connections for all of the continents. But what do the plates sit on? No, not a catfish, not even a turtle.

First, the plates, as we call them, are hard rock, each being many kilometres thick.

Referred to as the lithosphere, this sphere of rock sits on the upper mantle which is even thicker and ‘treacle like’. Deep heat beneath and within the ‘treacle’ causes slow grinding convection currents (a bit like the ocean and wind currents) which, ever so slowly, carry the plates in a variety of directions.

It’s the bumping into, tearing away from or diving one under the other, or grating sideways against each other with titanic force that generates the tremors and earthquakes we experience here and there from time to time.

And finally, over millions of years up to and including today, the moving plates are responsible for the infinitesimal rearranging of the continents’ positions relative to each other. Turn the clock back 150 million years or so and we find Africa and South America completely joined up with Madagascar, India, Australia, New Zealand and Antarctica in one big land mass we named Gondwana.

So, as you can see, our island continent has its own titanic technique for going ‘walkabout’ and giving us a ‘bump’ now and then.

Shearer Ward Update Councillor Steve Wilkinson

s part of Council developing its new Community Plan, public forums have been held at Morgan, Truro and Mannum.

Members of the public who attended and participated in workshops were asked a number of questions, including “what they are proud of in their area?”, and “what is needed to improve it?”. Former Port Power player and now assistant Coach Jacob Surjan, attended the Mannum Forum and gave a presentation on team building, setting the scene for the rest of the evening. It is important for the Community and Council to work together to achieve positive results. All forums were well attended.

A section of concrete footpath has been constructed in front of Aminya and another section is being installed on Berryman Avenue. The Clock is back in Randell Street, Mannum and damaged pavers have been replaced.

The February Council Agenda contained a report regarding “Process Improvement for Building Maintenance, Development Assessment and Compliance”.

• Process Improvement for Building maintenance is being categorised into high, medium and low priority and a long term building asset management plan developed. Council allocates $100,000 per annum to maintain its 300 buildings which is insufficient to maintain all of them in a reasonable condition. Over the years there has been a lot of discussion about selling Council property that has little or no use, to provide funds to improve other assets and reduce ongoing maintenance costs. Community feedback indicates that old buildings are valued and Council is asked to acquire more assets, for example, more historic buildings (the old Mannum Primary School) and toilets.

• Development Assessment and Compliance are the functions that draw the greatest level of criticism from the Community. The report shows that Mid Murray Council does not employ sufficient inspectorial staff to manage all responsibilities under the various Acts and Regulations to the extent expected by some members of the Community. Illegal building

development along the River Murray is a particular problem for Council. (On a recent inspectorial field trip, staff advised that they were often unaware of illegal development until advised by the public. Staff are then faced with the task of negotiating with the owner of the illegal structure to remove it, which can result in lengthy and costly legal proceedings.) More frequent updating of aerial mapping with in-field access to records and maps is under consideration. Funding for this will be considered with additional staffing in budget deliberations for 2016/17.

• The report on Development Assessment states that most Development Applications for buildings, structures and additions are processed within the required statutory timeframes. Sometimes application approvals are delayed due to requiring further information from the applicant. Staff are working on improving processes and procedures to improve the flow of development applications.

Council received a report on the “Senate Select Committee on the Social and Economic Impacts of the Murray-Darling Basin Plan on Regional Communities”. In response, Council has made a submission to the Senate Committee. A Senate Committee public hearing was held at Goolwa. Some submissions, at the public hearings, stated that sea water should be allowed to flow into the lower lakes and the removal of the barrages at Goolwa is an option to achieve this. (This would have a devastating negative effect on our irrigators along the lower section of the river.) There is considerable variation in the views of the public, including what the water should be used for and the allocation of water between the States.

At the recent Council Audit Committee meeting, the auditor’s yearly report was received. The report states that no areas of concern were found with the Annual Financial Statements. Council’s internal

control environment was considered to be adequate. Other Audit Committee Reports included a Risk Management Review, Credit Card Use, Budget Review as at 31st December 2015 and Long Term Financial Plan Assumptions. The budget review included additional expenditure of $213,000 for the renewal and replacement of assets due to the urgent replacement of the effluent holding tank for the Morgan Caravan Park, additional expenditure to complete the Morgan Station Masters House project and renewal of street line marking.

The National Clean Up Australia Day event is on 6th March 2016. You can participate by registering your own clean-up site or volunteering at a site near you. Further information is available from www.cleanupaustraliaday.org.au To assist in gathering feedback from the Mid Murray Community, Council has developed a fact sheet to explain the impact little corellas are having on our parks, playing fields and facilities along with what’s happening at a State and local level to address their impact. Within the fact sheet, Council is seeking feedback from the Community on where the corellas are causing concern and the type of damage. Council is also interested in hearing about effective control measures that the Community have used or are aware of. Fact sheets are available from the Council office, or Council website.

Council has advertised for further comments as to whether Gass Reserve should remain an off leash dog area or be changed to require dogs to be kept on a leash. Collecting Tinnies – Part 2 fter Jake had fixed up with Ned he settled back on his stool, he took a large mouthful and spoke.

“It was like this. It was just about knock off time. The boss had just got back from checking one of them solar windmills we’ve got around the place nowadays. I had been down with the two hands working out the next day’s jobs when this Range Rover turns up. When the dust had settled the driver got out.

There was some young thing in the passenger’s seat, maybe a daughter, maybe a girl-friend. He wandered over to the boss and asked to speak to the manager. Harry looked him up and down a bit then told him who he was. The city type thought about that for a bit then stuck out his hand and introduced himself. I had wandered over by that time and he didn’t seem such a bad bloke for one of them city fellers.

“Anyway he had got lost. He was going somewhere else and suddenly the GPS said he was driving in the donga and not on a road. So what he wanted to know was how to get back to the main road.

“The boss laughed a bit and said he had better come inside and have a beer and then we would send him on his way. So the city bloke whose name was Des got the blonde out of the Rover and we all went inside for a drink.

“The blonde’s name was Citron. Her mother, apparently long gone, had been into being different and Citron was the result.

Des was her father and she preferred her father to her mother, ‘he was more fun’, she told us.”

I signalled to Ben for another one and looked at the cop to see if he was interested. He had his head down and was still busily scribbling. The radio, fixed to his belt squawked from time to time. It couldn’t have been for him because he ignored it.

Little Jake got another Coopers, had a good mouthful, wiped froth with the back of his hand and got back to the story.

“After a couple of coldies I told the boss I would show Des the short cut back to the bitumen. So we all walked outside and that was when Des saw that old bucket of bolts. You remember that blitz wagon thing with the boring rig on the back and the old water tank that was all holes that was bolted to the tray. I reckon we came over to where you were a couple of times to get water in the big dry, just before you retired.”

I thought hard. Vague memories came back. Much of the machinery in those places was a testament to the imagination and ingenuity of the station workers. What Little Jake was speaking of was such an example. I could not believe that it was related to any real machine. It seemed to have been made from bits and pieces of a dozen different vehicles and bits of plant that would have been lying around the engine shed. Anyway, to keep Jake happy I nodded my head as though I did remember and let him get on with story.

“Des almost ran over to the old wreck. Citron just shook her head and told us to ignore him, he often behaved like that around old machines.

“Well, anyway it seems Des collects old machines. He reckons when he retires he is going to restore them and have a museum and such things.

“So Des tells us it is a rare vehicle from World War II and there are only two others left in the country. Harry told him it didn’t go any more. Where it was, was where it had stopped.

Des wasn’t worried. He wanted to buy it off Harry straight away. After some arguing back and forth the boss agreed to sell for about as much as a new truck would cost; at least I think that was the price Des agreed to, finally.”

An Easter Reflection

I

t’s Easter again. I like Easter, even the eggs and the bunny though I don’t eat chocolate any more. And I like what it stands for. I expect some folks just like the long weekend and that’s fine for them. But I like the whole victory thing, the idea that no matter how dark it looks, there’s some good comes out of it. Some really good people I know do it quite differently but I don’t do Lent: it was never my practice to do without something. Deliberately suffering does nothing for me. Somehow, I think that once is enough. I believe, but I enjoy believing, I appreciate life and looking back, I’ve had a good one. I’ve done my three score and ten and then some and it’s been a marvellous trip. Not that it was all happy times, it wasn’t. But it was worth it. Analyse all you

want, tell me I am just not getting it. Who cares.

I am satisfied.

Not that I’d do it again. Once was enough.

Besides, I’d not willingly be a teenager again. I enjoy watching the great grand kids because they’re still very little and finding out about the world they just arrived in and mostly enjoying it.

Teens are not so much fun, they are hitting the hard part and still learning how. Now, at my age (I’ve waited years to be able to say that) I know about the hard part and I know you survive. The hurts don’t count so much because you can survive anything when you know there’s an end to it. And I can see the end coming, no matter what they throw at me.

So, is there anything after? I am quite sure I am not an accident and there is Someone out there

that keeps me company. What comes next is not up to me. I believe the Jesus story. The part I like is the real guy, the one who braided a whip and threw things around; the guy who told people off right and proper and then went out and healed the poor sods that didn’t have it coming. I’m not so keen on the hanging bit. We were really nasty about that. I suspect we still are. The story says Jesus didn’t have to put up with it: he chose to.

That is hard to believe, but I do.

Of course Easter is about the resurrection, isn’t it? There’s another chance if you qualify and a lot of different opinions about how you do that. I suppose you’d have to give an account of yourself.

I’d just say, ‘Thanks,’ and leave the rest up to Them.

Road Safety We have been having Road Safety lessons with all of our Junior School Students. We have been practising crossing the road safely by looking both ways for cars, monitoring their speed and listening for vehicles approaching. Port Adelaide Football Club Our school was fortunate to have a visit from 4 Port Adelaide Footy Club players. They came to talk to students in years 2-5 about healthy eating and living. The guys presented themselves as healthy eating and living ambassadors and were promoting the types of food we all should be eating daily to be healthy and have lots of energy for school and sport. They focused on exercise, rest (sleep) and a good balance of everything. Students enjoyed getting to know the players and some were over the moon to get a signed poster and a photo!

Pancake Day On Tuesday 9th February also known as Shrove Tuesday, our school held a Pancake Day to raise money for Uniting Care. Our school raised $400.

All donations and money raised from the sale of pancakes goes directly to local Uniting Care organisations to help them provide practical support to South Australians in need, including those without a home, people living with disabilities, vulnerable children and adults, older people and families in crisis. Well done to everyone who bought a pancake or two or three!

Works, Services and Projects Update from Mid Murray Council hese are brief notes on selected topics from the Tuesday 9th February 2016 meeting of Council.

• Council will form a small working party for the design of welcome and farewell signs for towns throughout the Mid Murray Council area.

• Since 2015, Council has maintained an active role in export marketing opportunities to China in conjunction with Regional Development Australia, State Development and the South Australian Local Government Association. This has involved a number of initiatives including an online business to business platform. Council will fund the participation of the Director, Development and Environmental Services in the 2016 Shandong Mission to work with businesses within the Mid Murray Council for these initiatives.

• Council continues to develop a targeted management approach for the control of little corellas and will be implementing various strategies in 2016.

Council will await the recommendations of the Senate inquiry.

Due to the number of projects already funded or submitted for funding for 2016/17, Council will not submit an application for Round 3 of the National Stronger Regions Fund.

Council will support a silver sponsorship for the 2016 South Australian Visitor Information Centre Conference to be held from 17th to 20th May 2016.

Information will be obtained to submit a nomination for the Mannum Institute to be State Heritage listed.

What’s On At The Hub

Ground Floor Uniting Church Out-reach Mission

he Ground Floor is an out-reach mission of the Uniting Church in Mannum. It started in the ground floor of the old Institute building in 1987. The original concept was for a drop-in centre for a cuppa and companionship.

From there it evolved into an op-shop. People donated clothes and all manner of things including furniture, electrical appliances to be sold at very low prices, or even given to people in need. Rev. Clyde Morey, an ex minister, writes in A tree planted by the river: “The Ground Floor has proved a marvellous opportunity for the people of the Parish to share in a worthwhile project which serves the community and helps significantly with the parish funds.”

When the Institute was sold, in about 2000, Dahl and Warhurst’s old garage show room at the top end of Randell Street became the next venue.

But, because of current rules and regulations, furniture and electrical appliances now cannot be accepted.

The present coordinator, Hanne, has asked that a public thank you be printed in the Mannum Mag for the many, many donations, including cash, to the Mannum Uniting Church Ground Floor. Those donations help the church to donate financial support to various organizations in our community.

Thirty years on, the Ground Floor is still operated by volunteers from all walks of life, providing a drop-in centre and having clothing, etc. etc. on sale at very cheap prices.
