Lions Youth Achievement Awards Australia Day 2013 annum Lions, in partnership with the Mid Murray Council, hosted the Australia Day breakfast at Mary Ann Reserve.

Four hundred and eighty fully cooked breakfasts were served in two hours. This was the 18th year for the breakfast, with no price increase over that time.

After breakfast, the Lions Club presented Youth awards to young achievers who met the required criteria in several categories. Award winners were: Young Employee Award: Bradley Towns Academic Award: Coen Roe-Simons All Round Achievement: Rachel Hartley Sporting Achievement Award: Karissa Kendall Community Involvement Award: Bradley Stephens Congratulations to all these young winners.

A collection bucket was passed around during the morning to assist the Lions bushfire appeal. Sincere thanks to the community for their generous donations which raised $537.60. The money raised is distributed by the Lions organization directly to those affected by the bushfires and no administration fees are deducted.

The collection of bottles and cans for recycling has been going very well over the summer months, and is a major fund raiser for the Lions Club’s projects.

SA Truck and Ute Show Mannum Sunday 9th June 2013 annum Progress Association are already busy with the organisation of the Truck and Ute Show on the June long weekend.

League Engineering are again our major sponsor for 2013 and Gavin Ivey has lots of new ideas to bring to the day.

The day will have similar events in Randell Street and Mary Ann Reserve as last year with a number of added attractions. We are planning on having a band on the Reserve for the day as well.

Sporting & Community Bodies Local Event Catering We are again looking at having as many as possible local caterers at the event including food venues at Mary Ann Reserve for the ute section. Those community bodies who catered last year were very pleased with last year’s event so think about this and contact Irene Lovell for details. We will be taking expressions of interest to the 31st March when decisions will be made regarding the catering for the event.

Interest in the event was huge last year and we are expecting an even larger crowd to Mannum to make this the event of 2013.

Foodies in Communities Campaign he ‘food fight’ is being ramped up by passionate Community Foodies Statewide to ‘Keep Foodies in Communities’.

I met with Hon Ivan Venning MP and delivered a petition calling on the Government not to act on the recommendations handed down by the ‘McCann’ Review of Non-Hospital Based Services. Petitioners from Pt Lincoln to Mannum were represented.

Mr Venning, one of a growing number of ‘political’ supporters that reject these recommendations, and his counterpart, Mr Adrian Pederick MP, recently met Community Foodies to hear their concerns regarding the funding threat to this valuable program that assists so many South Australians.

Greens leader Hon Mark Parnell MP, recently moved a motion in parliament calling on the State Government to reject the “slash and burn recommendations” contained within the ‘McCann’ Review on the future of vital community health programs in South Australia. This was followed up

early this week with a well informed speech to parliament. “I am amazed, concerned and disappointed that this government proposes to deal with a blowout in the cost of dealing with illness and disease in our community by destroying the very programs designed to stop illness and disease in the first place. It is just plain madness and it does not make sense... It is nothing short of a shift of health costs from this generation to our children and that is unconscionable and immoral.”

Community Foodies statewide are united in fighting to retain the program that we are passionately committed to delivering to our communities. Plans are underway calling all supporters of the campaign to gather on the steps of parliament in protest of these ‘senseless and reckless’ recommendations. Promoting Mannum Dear Editor, In response to a portion of Kitty Schiansky’s article Cashed up Bogans we write with regret to have to explain the reason for the entrance sign to Mannum having the 3 major events which Mannum Progress Association run for the year. We thought it good value advertising to let tourists know well in advance of these events, so that if they were visiting over the school holidays they may be interested in coming back, say for the Truck and Ute Show in June. We run our Association on funds which are collected from membership fees and monies raised during the year from these events so we are very careful how we spend our dollars.

The major objective of the Association is to “foster the continuing development of the resources of Mannum and surrounding districts and the improvement of its facilities for the benefit of residents, attracting new residents and offering greater facilities for short term and longer term tourists, tourism and business.”

We believe that the 3 major events we run for Mannum cover all of these above objectives. The Craft Fair showcases local craft and we were able to source all our catering for the Truck and Ute Show from local businesses and sporting and community clubs so

all the catering money stayed in the town. We were also very proud to have received the Mid Murray Council’s Event of the Year award for the Truck and Ute Show last year.

Kitty, we are sorry if “you feel bombarded by the entrance sign” but we believe we have done the right thing promoting our events early for the tourists.

Tacky Tourists Dear Editor, I would like to add my voice to that of the author of, Cashed Up Bogans in your February issue.

People who live in Mannum and especially those who grew up in this unique historic river town, “do care” that tourism has developed a tawdry tackiness which does not reflect our proud heritage.

Who has not cringed at the sight and deafening noise of jet skis roaring around in circles opposite Mary Anne reserve? Or seen them leaping like demented dolphins on the waves created by the Princess? And who hasn’t found themselves apologists for this disrespectful behaviour when overseas or interstate visitors are present?

Why is this not tolerated on metropolitan beaches, yet is

actually promoted in Mannum with “jet ski friendly” signs erected by council?

Mannum’s pioneers would turn over in their graves to see the way their town is now treated, and that by its very leaders.

I also call on the Mid Murray Council to initiate a public forum to talk openly about the possibility of an approach to tourism other than what appears to be the quick buck. People are hurting over what they see as the betrayal of their beloved riverside town.

Catch 22 Dear Editor, Vivian Garner’s piece Christmas Legacy (February 2013, Issue 76) presents science

winning the battle against infectious disease. Instead, I’d suggest a dilemma’s been created.

While the revelations of scientific enquiry display cleverness, how wisely have we applied that knowledge? With technology and misplaced confidence we attempt to control natural systems but, for example, far from defeated, a variety of bacteria – TB, MRSA, E. coli – now buffet and breach last resort antibiotics (aided by escalating cost of treatment, and a lax attitude to prescribing and regimen). Beyond the overindulgent West, technology has delivered benefits patchily – for many it’s an unmitigated disaster – yet we’re all now threatened by the consequences of “progress” e.g. teeming humanity; industrialised food production; nature out of balance; a warming climate and Third World poverty which, together, set ideal preconditions for new diseases to emerge – HIV, SARS, H5N1, Ebola.

Should a pandemic occur, we’ll discover that suffering was only deferred.

Quandary: Even if we defeat microbes, the problem of overpopulation remains.

opefully you have been allowing your imaginations to run wild for the last few months about what could happen at the valuable space that was the Mannum Primary School.

‘The Mannum Primary School Land Fund Committee’ has been continuing to imagine such a haven in the centre of our town. In fact we were imagining it long before the fund account was set up and were busy trying to access funds to save t h i s v a l uable r e sour c e by corresponding with: • Our local Federal and State MP’s, Hon. Patrick Secker and Hon. Ivan Venning, including a meeting with Mr Venning in Mannum.

• Then Education Minister Hon Grace Portolesi.

• Regional Development Australia.

• Mid Murray Council – both in writing and meetings.

• SA Minister for Planning Hon John Rau. While each was sympathetic to the cause they were not able to access funds.

BUT there is good news! Together we can do what all of these are unable to do!

It was said recently that if 1,000 people donated an average of $350 we will be able to make an offer to purchase this property. Some people may afford only small amounts, every dollar brings the dream closer and every donor (no matter the amount) helps to fulfil the dream.

ome is a word that is so popular these days that it’s become part of the jargon that can mean anything in any context. Homeshare is the latest programme I’ve come across, and this one is not about travellers exchanging homes or offering accommodation for visitors. It actually applies to us of the older generation, who want to live in our own home for as long as possible, but need a little help to do so. It works like this.

We, the Householders, offer a furnished bedroom, shared facilities and welcoming, free accommodation in exchange for about 10 hours per week of companionship and a little help, the security of someone else being in the house overnight, and a contribution towards utility bills. Those people looking for a homely place to live are called ‘Homesharers’.

Helping Hand Aged Care and UnitingCare Wesley in Adelaide are beginning this project in a very small way, modelling it on similar Wesley Homeshare programmes interstate, which have been a great success with Householders and Homesharers for some years.

involved at all stages from initial assessment and checking, to arranging introductions and supporting ongoing matches. A Homeshare Agreement details the arrangements for living together including areas of the house to be shared, help needed and how daily living costs will be managed. And there are police and reference checks.

Now, in the good old days, we advertised in newspapers under ‘Housekeepers Wanted’ or ‘Room to Let’ or ‘Accommodation Wanted’.

Anyone who needed a home read the ads, replied, and we checked each other out.

Ah, how times have changed.

But then again, once we get beyond labels like ‘Householders’ and ‘Homesharers’, we find ordinary folks like us with the same basic needs for a place we can c a ll “home”, companionship and a little help however young or old we are.

always get sentimental on Australia Day: the river, the sunshine, the happy faces. I even got all smarmy when John Francis sang the Vegemite chorus. And I’m a migrant. I was over 30 when I stepped off the boat in 1973, I didn’t grow up on Vegemite. I do like it on toast though. I like the Lions breakfast too, even though I grew up on hot oatmeal. Well, sometimes we had cold cereal if it was really hot, for Canada that is, but it was a short season, let me tell you. And champagne for breakfast? I didn’t even read about that where I grew up.

But then it was a long time ago.

Things have changed in the 40 years I’ve been here.

Katrina Webb got my attention. One of the better changes is the recognition of the Paralympics. As a netball scholar at the Australian Institute of Sport, she recognised she had cerebral palsy. Switching to the Paralympics helped her get over her reluctance to accept difference, she said. Hearing her helped me got over mine.

never about these kids? These are five we can be proud of: their achievements in sports, a c a d e mi c s . c o mmu n it y involvement, leadership skills and their determination in overcoming difficulties from distance to disability. They all thanked their family for their support. They grew up here, some of them are already making a career here and some are going to make a difference wherever they go. They can be proud and we should be proud of them and their families and ourselves for keeping this place a good place to grow up in.

Morgan was well represented in the awards; Mid Murray citizen of the year and young citizen of the year, among others - a real intergenerational effort.

Another country town that can be proud of its citizens, both the award winners and the community that supports them.

The amount of effort these people put into their community is heart warming as well as impressive. And you know that there are parents, partners and friends involved with each of them. We’re a pretty good lot, really. How come we only pay attention on Australia Day? Vivian Garner

Swan Reach Town Hall Redevelopment Project egional Develop ment Australia (RDA) Murraylands and Riverland has welcomed the announcement of the projects proceeding to full application stage for Rounds Three and Four of the Regional Development Australia Fund (RDAF).

Round Three is worth $50 million and will provide grants of between $50,000 and $500,000 for projects located in towns with a population of 30,000 or less.

In the Mid Murray Council area, the Swan Reach Town Hall Redevelopment project has been selected to proceed to full Round Three application stage.

Round Four will allocate a total of $175 million for priority regional infrastructure projects.

Projects are encouraged to leverage funding from state and local governments and the private sector to maximise the value of the grant to regional communities.

priorities, delivering real benefits to local communities.

“The projects chosen took into the account the priorities of our Regional Plan and other identified community priorities, and address the needs of the region,” RDA M and R Chair, Neil Martinson said.

A list of projects selected to proceed to full application under both rounds is available at www.regional.gov.au.

The closing date for full Round Three applications is Wednesday 27th March 2013.

The Department of Regional Australia, Local Government, Arts and Sport will ensure all applications comply with the Guidelines. Eligible applications will then be assessed by an independent Advisory Panel and funded projects will be announced from June onwards.

The RDAF, is worth almost $1 billion over five years and is designed to boost economic and community development. It is p ar t o f the Austr alian Government’s commitment to regional Australia.

Some well-known people who have suffered great hardship have gone on to great achievements e.g. Helen Keller and Nelson Mandela. Look at nature and the regeneration of bushland after fire. Muse also how our immune system works and skin repairs itself. How much better our world (community, household) would be if we could encourage each other and ourselves to develop skills to carry on. Too many people put others down just to raise themselves up. We also just don’t know what that other person has gone through or is still going through, that affects their outlook and behaviour.

Let’s help each other and ourselves to look up and see the blue sky, not just the dirt on the ground. Life is a journey and no one is an island.

• Sealing of Eudunda Road, Dutton for a distance of 1.2 km to Fulton Hogan will commence on the 20th February 2013.

• Liaison with the State Government to have the report on river bank collapse sites released, especially in relation to East Front Road. The report on East Front Road and other high risk sites is with the State Minister. Once this is released, Council will be in a position to quickly assess the reopening of East Front Road.

• Council has approved SA Water’s request for a part road closure of Chandler Avenue from the 12th March 2013 to the 12th April 2013 for their Stormwater Upgrade Project for the Mannum Pump Station 1.

• The State Government has released its draft State Public Health Plan which has new responsibilities for Councils. Council will forward a submission before March 2013.

• The Building Code of Australia is being amended in relation to “flood hazard areas” and will require habitable parts of dwellings/shacks to be located above a 1 in 100 year flood level (equivalent to a 3rd story) and structural design pressures applied to these buildings to increase three fold.

Council has sent a letter highlighting these issues to the State Minister for Planning and a copy to the Shackowner Associations in the Mid Murray Council area and SA Murray River Councils affected.

• Council has approved community grants to Swan Reach Soldiers Memorial Bowling Club Inc, Blanchetown Internet and Information Centre, Morgan Cadell Golf Club, Friends of Younghusband River Care Inc, Morgan Community Gym and Mannum Cricket Club.

• The State Government is proposing to decrease Sport and Recreational funding by $500,000 in 2014 and a further $3.5 million in 2015/16. Council will prepare a submission objecting to this decrease, highlighting the importance of such funding for

communities.

• In response to approaches to Council, the camping permit system for Tenbury Hunter Reserve near Swan Reach has been abolished.

• Assistance in the preparation of a submission to the State Minister for Transport following an Options Paper for the sustainability of Murray River ferries. Council is represented on the Ferries Working Party exploring options to make sure ferry services continue. The Options Paper recommended the full funding replacement of the 5 ageing ferries.

Council will be represented in a deputation to the State Minister to highlight this and the importance of ferry services to communities.

• The health support services funding cuts recommended, especially metropolitan health promotion services which support rural and regional communities, have been rejected. These cuts will lead to an increase in health service gaps, increase obesity, poor health and chronic disease and cause a major disconnect and compromise the quality of services delivered in the Council area.

• Following complaints from some residents, Council will investigate practical strategies within our resources to deal with the problem of corellas and will seek support from the State Government to continue to manage this problem.

• The State Government’s mid year review of its 2012/13 budget indicated Zero Waste SA would cease operations in 2015/16. If this is the case we will object as this will lead to less funding for Councils for Waste Management. We will await further information from the new State Minister.

• Following the hosting of a Community and Council Forum at Blanchetown on November 28th 2012, Council has made amendments to and adopted the Forum notes. Council is in the process of progressing the projects and issues raised.

Pause A While

Whistle Toot PS Marion and Mannum Dock Museum 013 will be another busy year for the PS Marion…

The boat was taken to the Mary Ann reserve for the Sounds by the River Concert on 12th January, where it was used as a venue for corporate ticket buyers. A huge crowd of people converged on Mannum to hear Jimmy B arnes and his supporting acts preforming their signature songs and music.

Australia Day is always celebrated in Mannum by locals and visitors enjoying the Lions’ Breakfast (“the full works” including champagne), listening to music, watching the local Australia Day award ceremony, and taking a cruise on the PS Marion. This year’s event was well supported and enjoyed by many, helped along by reasonable weather.

The PS Marion cruised to Goolwa to attend the SA W o o d en B o at Festiv a l .

Passengers left the boat at Wellington to be transported back to Mannum. The crew then took the boat across Lake Alexandrina to Goolwa, in the company of PV Amphibious and

other boats. The Festival organising committee arranged for UK television personality Griff Rhys Jones and his wife to cruise on the PS Marion to Goolwa to open the Festival.

Early notice of another PS Marion cruise this year is the ‘Not the last voyage’ 6th - 15th June

2013 is the 50th anniversary of the 1963 cruise of the PS Marion when it was brought from Berri to Mannum, to be placed in the Dry Dock as a static exhibit. The Premier of the day, Sir Thomas Playford boarded at Bowhill and was sworn in as a crew member for the last leg of the journey. There will be more information about this event as it comes to hand.

The Opening of the Children’s Museum takes place on Tuesday 5th March. Many volunteer hours have gone into making the Children’s Museum and school excursion curriculum document a reality. The Blacksmith’s Shop is ready to go too, and the Steam Works shed… 2013 is a busy year!

Anzac Day Dawn Service

T

he Anzac Day Dawn Service will be held as usual at 0600 on 25th April 2013 at the Memorial situated at the top of Randell St. The service will be conducted by Pastor David Barker.

This year it is proposed that some of our Service Members and a number of Affiliate Members and Scouts will form up and march from the memorial to the club rooms at the end of the service.

As a tribute to those that went before, and to those that still serve our great country, you are encouraged to attend and support these men and women of our community.

The Mypolonga Scout group will mount a vigil at the Memorial on the evening of the 24th April.

Following the Service, breakfast will be served at the RSL Club / Mannum Rowing Club rooms, situated on Mary Ann Reserve.

Breakfast will be catered by the Lions Club of Mannum. Bacon and egg sandwich OR sausage and onion sandwich will cost $3.00 each.

Bar facilities will be available from 0630.

Anzac Appeal Badges will be sold this year on Friday 19th April at two locations, outside Foodland in

Randell St and outside IGA on Adelaide Road.

Community Centre Update Keeping you informed about the Mannum Community Centre progress

he management structure for the Mannum Community Centre, including th e M e n ’ s S h e d a n d Community Garden, has now been established.

• Terms of reference for the committees are being developed.

• A public meeting to establish the Mannum Community Men’s Shed was held on February 7th.

• A public meeting will be called shortly to establish the Mannum Community Garden.

• Council works at the old school are due to start again soon and we are working towards being able to occupy the premises by July 1st.

The Mid Murray Support Services Board has approved the relocation of Training and Community Development Officer, Angie Roesler, from our office in Randell Street to the community centre. Angie’s role will continue as the coordinator of ACE (Adult C o mmu n ity E d u ca tio n ) programs and volunteer coordinator and she will serve as an ex-officio member of the

yet-to-be-named Mannum Community Centre Management Committee. The Management Committee will b e c h a rg e d w i t h t h e responsibility of operating the community centre with Angie and volunteers handling the daily operational tasks.

We’re buying furniture with 1 6 se c o n d h a n d ta b le s purchased locally and 12 “as new” coffee lounge chairs for the Meeting Place in the community centre.

A working bee will be arranged once the weather is a bit cooler to tidy up the wonderful native garden in front of the old school building.

i Everybody – welcome to the New Year of 2013.

Hope you all had a terrific Christmas and New Year.

We enjoyed great activities in the Social Club last year and we wish to create more of these for 2013.

The Social Club Committee has changed in that Gary Entwistle and Kellie Klose have resigned and Heather Todd and Charlie Klose respectively have taken their places. Welcome to both Heather and Charlie.

By the time this goes to print we will have held our first function for the year, a Happy Hour on Friday, 22nd February.

On Sunday 17th March we have a visit to a winery, then lunch at the Hahndorf Old Mill with 4 hours of entertainment by an Irish Band – because it is St Patrick’s Day, of course.

We then have a Jester River Cruise booked for Sunday 14th April with a BBQ lunch prior to the cruise.

Then on Sunday 26th May we have a visit to the Angaston Hotel booked for lunch with a visit to a Winery.

Astronomer’s Corner igh in the sky around 9:30 pm is the star Sirius in the constellation Canis Major. Following the constellation Orion the Hunter, Canis Major (the great dog) has the brightest star called Sirius (The Dog Star). Yes, there is a Canis Minor if you head towards the Celestial Equator you will see a star called Procyon, Canis Minor’s brightest star. Sirius and Procyon both have invisible companions and both stars are relatively close to our own sun.

Jupiter is in Taurus rising after 2:30pm and Saturn is in Libra after11:15 pm. Venus is in Capricorn / Aquarius. Mars is also in Aquarius, rising after 8 am.

Personalising and modifying star charts can be a way to add local information and in some cases make it more understandable. In the modern days of GPS where entering grid coordinates will get you to a particular point on earth, setting the three dimensional axes on a telescope will point it at a particular star. These adjustment factors are usually taken from tables in an ephemeris. There is an additional step for a telescope; it must first be aligned with the Earth’s axis. This is similar to the two dimensional condition that makes a compass useful; it must first be aligned north-south.

In the back of an ephemeris there are usually a few pages of numbers called the astronomical constants and also an appendix, which sometimes when dealing with tricky facts and figures says things like “uncommon” or “not yet used in astronomy”.

When jotting down the adjustment figures needed to set up your scope, there are several references to find such information, especially things like sidereal time adjustments, which are never in the back of the book under anomalies.

Sometimes there is not enough room on the back of your hand when you are setting up a new scope after dark. Norton star atlas always comes to mind for information, even an earlier edition does fine. For those fine adjustments a permanent marker pencil and a piece of thick clear plastic go a long way in the help and assistance tray.

Men are on the Job n Thursday 7th February 75 men gathered at the Mannum Rowing Club. Over a simple shared barbeque the business of establishing and operating a community men’s shed was conducted.

A bus load of men came from the Eastern Region Men’s Shed at Burnside to support us and a handful of blokes from the newly established Murraylands Community Men’s Shed popped in to share our meal and their wisdom.

A committee of nine enthusiastic Mannum men was elected and the Mannum Community Men’s Shed, (Australian Men’s Shed Association member number AMSA100517), is now on the job!

Mid Murray Support S e r v i c e s h ave b een providing an emergency food service, helping people who are down-on-theirluck, for many years. We rely on community donations of food and money so that we can provide this essential free service.

We are so thankful to Males Meats who have been giving us meat for the foodbank for longer than we can remember.

One of our valued members supplies our foodbank with fresh eggs and a couple of others provide us with fresh fruit and veggies when they are in season.

The Mannum Lions gives an annual cash grant which really helps.

Without this community support and generosity we would not be able to provide this essential service, so thanks for the fish, and everything else as well.

Volunteer of the Month Mid Murray Support Service is a volunteer driven organisation. We could not provide the services to the aged and disadvantaged right across the Mid Murray Council region without the work of an enthusiastic band of capable volunteers.

Each month we recognize one volunteer for service excellence and although we p r o mo te wi t h i n o ur organisation we believe that the volunteers should have public recognition. (Based on the true story of a woman from the Hallett/Mt Bryan region of SA, who became so depressed by loneliness during her drover husband’s long absences that she took her life. I consider this to be my “Turner poem”, capturing in poetic form the essence of JMW Turner’s inspirational paintings, currently on loan to the SA Art Gallery from the UK.) You said I’d learn to love the land, my heart, when droving drew you months from me and time became my beau.

Some masterpieces proved you right, like twilight’s crimson glow that bled the distance holding us apart.

This hut has been my sanctuary and cell: a refuge from the elements of heat and brooding rains, a jail for my emotions wearing isolation’s chains, a bushland-Heaven wrapping of my Hell.

And when the rays of breaking dawn rode out and kissed you, I stretched my lonely arm to where you sleep and missed you.

I’ve stared at hands of solitaire, my heart; the diamond nights of glitter and the golden days of gleam.

But every task I started soon became a silent scream my shaking, writer’s quill a poisoned dart.

The painting of my homeland on the wall has been a prison window to the world I left behind.

Sweet melodies of nightingale to memory’s confined; replaced by raven’s sombre, mocking call.

And when the rays of dawn rode out each day and kissed you, I stretched my lonely arm to where you sleep and missed you.

I’ve waited with your hobbled horse, my heartand watched you spread your midnight swag beneath a blaze of stars.

In trees above your campsite slumbered gangs of pink galahs, exploding when the dawning begged a start.

Beside a ford you crossed, I washed my hair; you paused and let your thirsty mob enjoy a leisured fill.

The trail-dust settled softly and the breathless day sat still, while choral hymns of crickets blessed the air.

I’ve circled over purple peaks, my heart, while far below you struggled on to find a hidden soak.

The weary stock were mindless, every step a laboured yoke; their instinct and your expertise the chart.

And as the rays of breaking dawn rode out and kissed you, I’ve stretched my lonely arm to where you sleep and missed you.

For this has been my passion and my pain, to be with you in fancy on your overlanding trails.

I’ve plotted every progress and I’ve scripted all your tales; my heart, I shan’t be doing that again.

But if the rays of breaking dawn are late or miss you, I’ll come again in dreams to where you sleep and kiss you.

The Outback paints my final morn of art; I’ll leave the backdoor open to receive each sun that sets.

Mannum History Group or a long time the History Group has been promising to make it easier to find graves in the Mannum Cemetery. We took donations in good faith and undertook to obtain cement markers for the rows, and labels denoting rows and plots. Little did we know the difficulties we faced.

The memorial company we engaged to make the posts closed due to illness without delivering. Eventually we had to buy the moulds ourselves and ask Stonecraft to make them. In the meantime the old cemetery map proved incomplete and almost illegible.

Our member Bob Johnston embarked on the huge task of devising a new map and marking system for every block and plot.

He also researched the names attributed to each grave to make sure the correct person was in each plot. This has been an enormous task made all the more difficult since many graves do not have gravestones or records of any sort. Bob is as sure as he can be that the task has been completed as accurately as possible.

Finally, we have found that the data input programmes used may not be compatible, or may be restricted in some way. It has not been possible to transfer Bob’s data base directly to the Mid-Murray web site but the staff there are transposing the information manually when they have time – a mammoth job.

In short, thank you for your patience. You will find the new map in the Information Bay at the Cemetery entrance. The markers are all in place and the details you need to find your loved ones will be on the website shortly. Bob will also be in attendance at the Cemetery during History Month on Sunday May 12th (Mother’s Day). We thank all our sponsors and will be writing to them shortly. They are also acknowledged on the new map.

urray Bridge Town Hall’s morning Matinee Series, is presented by Out of the Square Inc and The Rural City of Murray Bridge. The Three Singing Mexicans Thursday 21st March 2013, at 11 am Do you remember the days of your school social and everyone having a hilarious time doing the Mexican Hat Dance? It used to start slowly and then gain speed until we were all dropping around sweating at the end. The Three Singing Mexicans will let you relive those memories. Other songs featured will include the beautiful Guantanamera and the rousing La Cucaracha.

Tickets are now available in person at the Murray Bridge Visitor Information Centre, 3 South Terrace, Murray Bridge between 9:00am and 5:00pm every day, or by phoning 8539 1142. The Town Hall Box Office will be open from 10am on the day of the performance for the sale of any remaining tickets.

After the performance, you are invited to drop into the Murray Bridge Regional Gallery. There will be two exhibitions to delight you. In the Main and Jean Sims Galleries, India Flint’s “Muddy Waters” will be featured. This is an exhibition of new work in textiles and paper arising from a month long residency by the Mississippi in New Orleans … and life in the lower Murray River catchment area. India’s residency was proposed and hosted by the New Orleans Center for Creative Arts and supported by the Joan Mitchell Center.

In the Vicky Nottage Sculpture Court, Egbert Wellmann’s “Desert Harvest” will be featured. In our everyday environment, we are used to the fact that things define our spaces. When travelling through the Australian outback, Egbert experienced the opposite – out there, space dominates the things. It is out of this experience that he has developed the idea of getting the element of space involved in his sculptures.

Both of these exhibitions will be open from 2nd March to 14th April 2013.

They were the first to attempt to colonize Mars. They had landed with grass seeds to plant and horse, sheep and cattle embryos.

But the grass wouldn’t grow and none of the calves would survive.

The horses and sheep were doing well, but there not enough to meet their needs.

They sent a message to earth asking for more sheep and horses and a replacement for the cattle and grass. They particularly wanted an animal that could be used as meat in place of beef. Earth radioed back asking if venison would be satisfactory and it was.

Finally a space shuttle arrived with the needed supplies. The bill of lading was rushed to the leader of the colony who then spoke to his consul, “We got everything we asked for. They sent mare zygotes and doe zygotes and little lambs and ivy.”

As with all the recipes and dishes I prepare, there are many switch up’s that are only limited by imagination and this one is no exception. The use of fresh ingredients and the addition of walnuts give an added nutritional boost.

Green Bean and Yoghurt Salad 1 kg green beans, trimmed 1 cup raw unsalted walnuts 1 cup flat leafed parsley, roughly chopped 1 small red onion, finely diced Yoghurt Dressing ½ cup plain low fat yoghurt 2 tbsp capers, rinsed and drained Juice of 1 lemon 1 tbsp Dijon mustard 1 tsp honey

1. Bring a large saucepan of salted water to the boil.

Add beans and cook for about 6 minutes (or until just tender). Drain and refresh under cold water.

Drain again and dry with paper towel. Place in container, cover and refrigerate until needed.

2. Preheat oven to 180C. Place walnuts on a baking tray, roast for 5 minutes or until golden and crisp.

Transfer onto heat proof plate/bowl and allow to cool, roughly chop.

3. Prepare dressing by placing all ingredients into large salad bowl and whisking until combined.

4. Place all other ingredients into bowl and toss gently to combine.

Switch Ups Here are a few of my favourites, but the list is endless.

• Use other mustards for a different flavour dressing • Add 4 roasted garlic cloves to the dressing • Substitute Tahini paste for the mustard • S u b s t i t u t e b la n c h e d broccoli, cauliflower or other vegetable of choice for the beans • Add ½ cup of wilted spinach to the salad ingredients for an ‘iron’ boost • Add a small can of 4 bean mix, rinsed and drained to the salad.

Musical Miscellany Islands In The Steam he Bee Gees are claimed as Australians although they only lived here for a short time and they became international stars only after their return to England. Still, the first tentative steps by Barry, then by Barry with Robin and Maurice did occur in Australia, most famously on Bandstand.

Today several decades later they are internationally famous although there is only Barry as the sole survivor. Longevity in music to my mind indicates a certain class.

Only those with more than normal talent survive for more than a few years in the popular music field. There are a high percentage of one-hit wonders and neverwas’s.

What make the Bee Gees unique is their sound and their high energy performance on stage. Most have seen videos of their performances if not witnessed them live at some large venue. It is the three part harmony together with the falsetto, particularly of Barry, which leads to something very different to the Stones or T he B eatles who we r e a l mo st contemporaries.

Like The Beatles and the Stones they have been song writers. Perhaps a little differently, they have written songs for other singers besides having other singers cover their music. They have written hits for brother Andy Gibb, Yvonne Elliman and Frankie Valli. The likes of Dionne Warwick, Barbra Streisand, Diana Ross and Kenny Rogers have all turned to the brothers for songs. Barry has produced albums for and sung with Barbra Streisand.

Just before his untimely death, Robin Gibb, in collaboration with his son R J, wrote a serious work to commemorate the centenary of the sinking of the Titanic.

Titled “Titanic Requiem”, it was performed in the UK just before his death. Robin was too ill to attend the premiere. The reviews appear to have been praiseworthy rather than ecstatic.

Recently Barry with his son Steve, and Samantha (Maurice and Yvonne’s daughter) have embarked on a tour titled “Mythology”.

They will have performed in Sydney twice, Brisbane twice, Melbourne and New Zealand by the time this is published. I could

only find one review and that was by someone who was obviously a fan. It was a rave; still, even without all the superlatives it sounds as though it was pretty good. The reviewer describes it as a lively wake to Barry’s brothers. My son-in-law and daughter who also attended said the most moving moment was when Barry sang the first two choruses of “I Started a Joke” and it then segued into Robin singing the rest of the song from an image projected on a screen. He even took a bow. The whole audience stood and applauded.

During the tour Barry visited Redland Bay and unveiled a statue dedicated to the Bee Gees.

There are many albums and DVDs of the Bee Gees available. The best known DVD is probably “For One Night Only”. Worth putting in your collection, if it is not large, is the three disc set titled “The Ultimate Bee Gees”. It contains two CDs of many of their hits and a DVD with some lesser-seen views of the group in a variety of settings.

The Army had a vast scrap yard in the middle of a desert. The Inspector General’s Office performed an inspection and wrote the following: “Improper Security. Someone can easily steal from this area.”

So, the Army created positions for four MPs to guard the facility night and day.

The IG re-inspected, and gave the following write-up: “Improper procedures. There are no written instructions for the MPs to do their job.”

So, the Army created a planning section, and staffed it with two NCOs, one to write the instructions, and one to do time-studies.

The IG re-inspected and gave the following write-up: “There are no procedures in place to ensure the MPs are performing their duties correctly.”

The Army responded by creating a Total Quality Management section staffed with two NCOs, one to do studies and inspections and the other to write and file reports.

The IG re-inspected and gave the following write-up: “Insufficient supervision. There is no definable chain-of-command.”

So, the Army created an administrative section, and staffed it with an officer as OIC, a senior NCO as NCOIC, and two enlisted administrative specialists.

The IG re-inspected, and concluded: “This operation has met the requirements of the regulations. However, the command has been in operation for only one year and is already $18,000 over budget. The command must streamline operations and cut back on unnecessary staffing positions.”

So, the OIC eliminated the four MP positions.

The Sidecar y mother swears this was true.

Grandfather was a bit of a blacksmith and he built a sidecar for his Matchless motorbike. He would take grandmother to dances and on the odd visit to other nearby farms. He said it was cheaper than taking the Studebaker ute.

Grandmother would rug up, tie a hat around her head and a scarf around her neck and after an obligatory grizzle climb into the sidecar and away they would go.

It was one Saturday night in the autumn when they went into town to a dance at the local Institute. Rather an occasion since the band was not the usual squeaky violin and bush bass but a six piece orchestra especially brought up from the city for the occasion. The occasion was a debutante ball for some of the local belles who were to be presented to the Mayor’s wife.

The band was a great success. They made more noise than the storm which was gathering outside.

After supper most of the older couples began to depart. The unexpected storm meant that there were some chores to do when they reached their homes and there was always cows to be milked in the morning or fences to be fixed or any

number of other tasks which could wait until Monday.

Grandfather and grandmother said goodbye to their friends. The rain was sheeting down and the road was lit at intervals by the blue white light of lightning. The crash of thunder apart from road noises made conversation impossible.

Grandmother persevered. Grandfather just pulled his leather cap further down over his ears.

The Matchless was spring-heeled but that was all and there was really no suspension for the sidecar. This didn’t worry grandfather, in another age he would have been called a petrol head, even a hoon. He went tearing down the dirt road towards home with the throttle wrapped to the end-stop. The bike might have been doing forty five or even fifty.

About half the time it appeared to be flying as it hit a bump or chattered over some bad corrugation; at other times it was ploughing deep furrows in sudden patches of bulldust.

On reaching home he pulled up in front of the shed where he kept the machine.

The brakes squealed thinly as he came to a stop. He hopped off and the bike fell

over. It was then he noticed that he had no sidecar. Stunned, it took him a few moments to adjust. Then, with heart in his mouth, he lifted up the bike, kick started it and made his way back down the road towards town.

It was about three miles back along the way when he found grandmother walking along; perhaps limping would be more correct. Her hat was askew, she had lost the heel of one shoe and her one good pair of nylons had numerous ladders and runs in them. She was wet because of the rain and muddied and sore from a few bruises; in all, not a pretty sight and not a really happy little vegemite.

When grandfather stopped beside her she let him have it with both barrels. In words usually heard only in the shearing shed she told him what he could do with his motorbike, his sidecar, the roads, the miserable weather, milking the cows and anything else she could think of.

Grandfather listened to the whole tirade in a stoic silence. When she finally ran out of steam he said, “Couldn’t you have brought the sidecar along too?”

The Black Telephone In last month’s Mannum Mag the editor, Keith Baldwin, wrote about the book launch of “Elizabet and other stories” by Peter Weir. It is a delightful little book and pleasant to look at too, with Sandie Kuehne’s attractive illustration on the cover. I enjoyed all of Peter’s stories and as Keith said in his poem “I urge you to look for scenes from your life in this little book”. One story that I really related to was “Wadderyawant” which is about the use of telephones, in the past and now. Peter’s story inspired the following reminiscences. s a young child phones frightened me, I though they were only associated with bad news, like people dying.

I was born in Bendigo and my family shifted to Melbourne in the early 1940s. My older brother Doug had been blinded in a tragic accident at the age of four and we needed to be near the Blind Institute for his education.

Our old house was in Toorak, just behind the posh houses. Sir Somebody Grimwade lived in a mansion over our back fence. We had a family saying, which survives to this day, that if there was something we didn’t want to do, like cleaning shoes or washing dishes, we would “throw them over Grimwade’s fence.” I would sometimes climb over the high fence and peep through the hedges at the beautiful garden and lawns.

One day I was caught by Sir Somebody, or so I thought, and ordered home. Looking back it was probably one of his gardeners.

Our next-door neighbour Mrs Bryant was an old lady, an invalid. I never saw her out of bed. Brianty, as we called her, had beautiful white hands and my Mum always said she was a real lady. At 4pm each day she would have a sherry and a sponge finger.

I loved her.

She was looked after by Olive Block, also elderly, who had lived with her for many years, having first been employed to help with Brianty’s twin baby boys. One of the twins, Bert, now a middle-aged bank manager, still lived at home.

Blocky looked after them both very well, even making Bert’s beer in the troughs in the laundry. It smelt awful.

Blocky was not a lady but Mum said she had a heart of gold. She used to take me with her sometimes to Prahran market and I would be embarrassed when she pinched the fruit to see if it was ready to eat. She would buy me a toffee apple on a stick which was a great treat.

Unlike everybody else we knew, Brianty was wealthy enough to own a telephone, a black one. I would never have used it, however for some reason I remember the number – Windsor 8200. I imagine a call would have to be made via a telephonist.

My fear of telephones began one day in January which I remember vividly. My auntie and cousins from Bendigo had just arrived to spend time with us during the school holidays. We’d just sat down to lunch, all happy and laughing, when Blockie came in to tell us there was a phone call from Bendigo. Mum and Auntie Mabs rushed off and came back crying. Their brother, my Uncle Ken, had been killed in an accident at work. For years after I thought of telephones as messengers of doom.

When I was a young teenager I changed my mind. By this time we had shifted to Carisbrook in Central Victoria and we at last had a phone. Now it became an essential of life. I’d talk to my best friend, who I hadn’t seen for half an hour, indefinitely. Mum was a gentle soul and rarely complained but

when Dad came in from work looking a bit grumpy I’d hastily hang up. A few years later I’d pounce on it every time it rang in case it was the current love of my life ringing to ask me out to the flicks. Girls didn’t ring boys in those days.

Later on business phones were an essential part of my job as a bookseller. At one time I worked for a big international publisher and the managing director returned from an overseas trip with new ideas about phone courtesy. We all had to learn a long spiel, parrot fashion, identifying the company, the division we were in, who we were, plus thank you for their call etc., etc., which we must use whenever the phone rang. By the time we got through all the pleasantries the customer had gone to sleep or hung up.

These days I enjoy the phone, the land line only though. It keep me in touch with friends and family near and far and I can happily spend hours chatting to my sister in Victoria, my friend in the Blue Mountains or my mate down the road in Mannum.

My mobile phone, small and black, however I don’t love. I couldn’t tell you my phone number if you paid me and I only use it when really necessary. Few people know the number. I don’t want to be accessible to everybody every moment of the day. When I am away from home I want to enjoy the company I am with. If people want a chat they can ring me when I get home.

Mannum District Hospital and Mannum Medical Centre he year started with a sizzler with record high temperatures and catastrophic fire days being declared, creating an increasing hazard for the local population and major health issues for people at risk.

Our hospital, in conjunction with our community services, plays an important role during this period as we initiate action plans to support and minimise health related problems for the local population.

These plans include monitoring many members of our community who are considered to be at risk, such as the elderly who live alone or far away from the township and residents with particular health related issues that require support, etc.

The hospital monitors more closely heat related admissions and provides data to the department. This will help to identify any affected community areas requiring additional support. Plans can then be put in place to minimise potential risks.

It is important to remember that everyone can be affected by the heat, no matter how healthy we are. The symptoms for heat stress are: • Headache • Feeling dizzy, faint or weak • Profuse sweating • Urinating less often • Muscle spasms or cramps • Nausea If you feel ill with these symptoms, seek medical attention. Contact your GP, call Healthdirect Australia on 1800 022 222 or visit an emergency department.

If you have more serious symptoms, such as vomiting, becoming confused or having hot red skin because you stopped sweating, immediately call 000 for an ambulance.

If you have someone in your family or a neighbour at risk, it is important to check on them regularly.

Keep cool, (turn on air conditioners and fans) and well hydrated! Wear light clothes, drink plenty of water or juices even if you don’t feel thirsty. This is the main advice that we need to follow. Doctors from the Mannum Medical Centre will be going to Karoonda to help and support medical services there. Consulting there will be Doctors Hamoudi Aldyni, Vikki McLaughlin and Sonia Schutz.

Between them they will be consulting 4 days a month.

This service will not affect services provided at Mannum. We will continue to provide a 24 hour Emergency Service through the hospital and medical support through the Mannum Medical Centre.

The Flu Clinic will operate from mid March. Appointments can be made by ringing Mannum Medical Centre (8569 0222) after the 15th March.

Mannum Pet Essentials

oug Nowak and Jane Humphrey have recently purchased a property in Mannum where they intend to build and settle for the rest of their days.

They both grew up and lived in country regions. Doug is from Gippsland, Victoria, and Jane is from Gawler.

Doug grew up on dairy farms helping his Mum and Dad in their dog training school, where they were helping other dog owners and training dogs for various television series.

Jane lived in Gawler, when it was still a country town, but also lived and worked on broadacre farms on the Yorke Peninsular in the early 90s.

She has been a dog breeder since 1994 and is in the process of setting up a dog herding school.

“I have been involved with pets my entire life and started dog training in the early 80s,” Jane says.

Doug and Jane have now started Mannum Pet Supplies, a new business for Mannum and the surrounding

district. I’ll let Jane describe what they have to offer Mannum pet lovers and carers.

Our aim is to provide a friendly and complete service. That is right, service!! We want to serve YOU. We are offering a FREE home delivery service, once fortnightly, within a 10km radius of Mannum Post Office, with a pick up facility available for those outside of this radius.

The core of our business is fresh, cooked and dried meat/treats with the ability to price-up any other item you may require for your beloved pet (leads, collars, bowls, kitty litter, biscuits, and many more items).

Black Smith Shop

he Black Smith Shop is becoming a very popular attraction with interest from near and far. Fitting the exhibit and acquiring the tools required a great deal of effort and enjoyment by the Mannum Dock Museum Volunteers and in particular Trevor Cox who also worked with Chris Carter, President, Artist Blacksmiths Association SA, to ensure the successful installation of the equipment.

We recently received an additional anvil for the exhibit kindly donated

by Colin Pym, which was his father’s.

Colin enthused, “It will be great to see the anvil being used again instead of gathering dust in my shed.” The Museum greatly appreciates these contributions and work undertaken.

The Hall - In Focus n February the usual array of art and craft activities were provided. Participants made decorative gift boxes with Ellen, and Penny showed the group how to be creative by making either sun catchers or jewellery.

People are still enjoying the fortnightly trips to the new Murray Bridge shopping centre for shopping and lunch. The social inclusion outing was to the Christian Book Shop in Murray Bridge where a main meal plus coffee and cake is less than $10.00 per person. There are few places one can enjoy tasty food while putting such a small dent in the bank balance. We are grateful for this wonderful oasis, where people can eat at leisure and enjoy the ambience of this tranquil space. There was also a trip to the Cambrai Red Cross Shop where bargains are to be found in abundance and for a meagre $2.00 morning tea can be enjoyed, sitting in the sunshine savouring the view from the front veranda. We thank Lorraine and the staff for their ongoing hospitality.

Passive exercise has resumed on Monday mornings at 9:0am. Michelle is sharing her yoga experience. The sessions will alternate weekly between Yoga and Strength Training where light weights, resistance bands and Swiss balls are used to strengthen muscles and develop core strength and balance. The strength building exercises can also be done

sitting in a chair for those with limited mobility.

Nutritious and economical meals are still being prepared 3 days per week by staff and volunteers. The new fridge, purchased with funds raised by The Old Style Dance, has made the task much easier. Produce is now sourced at the new IGA store as needed daily. This means more precise catering is possible. Previously produce was purchased in Murray Bridge early in the morning before the number of participants requiring lunch had been firmly established. Not only is the produce being purchased of excellent quality but the prices are also very competitive. Meat on special is now able to be purchased in bulk and frozen, which represents a significant saving. The butcher has been most accommodating and was happy to package the 80 chops and sausages ordered on special into manageable packs of 10. The Staff and Managers have all been most accommodating making the thrice weekly shopping trips a much more pleasant experience.

Mannum Football Club r e s e a s o n t r aining is progressing well on both Monday and Wednesday nights.

The weather hasn’t been that kind with some very hot nights occurring. However the boys are becoming really fit and will be ready for their first match against Jervois on Saturday 6th April at Mannum.

Two trial games have been confirmed, both are away games.

If you want to see how the teams are progressing, come to either of the venues. The first trial is against Barmera on Saturday 16th March and the second against Birdwood on Saturday 23rd March. Coach travel is available for the Barmera trip enquiries to the Club.

Off field , things are progressing well. The new tables and chairs for the Clubrooms and have made a big difference.

Come along and enjoy the new ambience of the building. The working bee held over February 9/10, proved very successful.

The scoreboard, the exterior of the clubrooms and the goalposts were all painted. Sincere thanks go to the twenty or so people who gave their time to assist.

Another working bee is planned before the start of the season.

The junior registration night held on Wednesday 13 t h February proved most successful. Many young players took the opportunity to register, and got their parents involved in the junior activities. We also have our Club membership packages ready to be announced.

We hope that they will be well received and that people will come on board as financial members as well as supporters.

Edible Gardens on the School Menu

F

resh fruit and vegetables will soon become a growing feature in our local school gardens and classrooms, thanks to a $44,000 partnership program aimed at encouraging children to increase their hands-on experience and education with edible gardens.

The Schools Sustainable Edible Gardens project, is the product of a Memorandum of Understanding signed on to by four local council OPAL teams (Mid Murray, Murray Bridge, Coorong and Alexandrina), and the Natural Resources SA Murray-Darling Basin NRM (SA MDB NRM) Education Program.

Across the four OPAL Council areas, the program will offer between $500 and $1300 in funding, support, resources and professional development opportunities to participating local schools and kindergartens, where they can demonstrate a commitment to either creating a new – or developing an existing – fruit and vegetable garden.

The new partnership created through the Schools Sustainable Edible Gardens project MOU brings together two complementary areas of expertise from State and Local Government to support local schools and get their students back in the garden.

The beauty of this partnership project is that both the OPAL teams and the NRM Education officers can work together to support schools to make these gardens work for the benefit of the school, students, staff and community.

This project isn’t simply about delivering funding to schools. It’s about helping schools to build up sustainable gardens, which can be used for learning, link into curriculum, create health outcomes for students, and provide a hands-on experience for everyone in the school to get back to basics with growing their own fresh produce.

This partnership will help schools set up edible gardening plots which will increase opportunities for local children to see, smell and taste new fruits and vegetables that they have grown themselves.

Not only this, but we will work with schools to ensure that established gardens will link directly to students’ learning outcomes in subject areas such as health, nutrition, horticulture, agriculture, science and community development.

The funding can support establishment costs, such as soil, seeds, irrigation systems – or can also include costs of gardening tools for students, sustainable products, skill development for staff or volunteers, school garden recipe books and more.

SA MDB NRM Senior Education Coordinator Pippa Cattanach said sustainable school gardens were something that the NRM Education team has supported for some time; partnering with the local OPAL sites will dramatically expand funding and resources to schools.

“Through this partnership, we can support schools in developing their sustainable edible

gardens all year round,” Ms Cattanach said.

“We will not only work within the schools individually, but also offer regular training and professional development for staff andvolunteers across the Murraylands and Fleurieu regions.

“Next month we will deliver a two-hour workshops at a number of locations to introduce the grants to school staff, help work through School Garden Actions Plans, offer case studies on best-practices already underway in schools, and offer networking opportunities with like-minded teachers across the region.”
