Mannum Truck and Ute Show Sunday 9th June ith over 120 trucks and utes on display, visitors will be in awe as the big prime movers and many intriguing heritage trucks show off their polished rigs along Randell Street at the South Australian Truck and Ute Show brought to you by the Mannum Progress Association and the Truck Factory.

Visitors will walk amongst the giants with chrome shining and paintwork gleaming and with the magnificent Murray River as their backdrop this June long weekend on Sunday 9th.

“We are excited to now host the second South Australian Truck and Ute Show in Mannum and are expecting more entries this year,” said Mannum Progress Association Chairperson Carol Greening.

“The show is not just a place where you can win the best presented, it is a family day out with country music, food stalls with the whole main street comes alive.”

Mayor Dave Burgess was amazed by the display and the 5000 people who attended last year.

“The inaugural event last year was an overwhelming success.

Country music will be provided throughout the day in two locations adding to the festival atmosphere. City Cowboys will be at the Shearer Car Park with the trucks and Lee Brocky and Outback Overdrive with the utes at Mary Ann Reserve.

A mini ‘Truck Expo’ will be held in Randell Street with exhibits for all trucker’s needs along with bric-a-brac, craft and produce stalls for the ladies at the Bowling Club car park.

For the children, free entertainment will be provided with a jumping castle and face painters.

The M.V. Jester will run one hour cruises at 11am, 12:30pm and 2:00pm from Mary Ann Reserve, where you can see the many utes on display vying for the many trophies on offer.

Shuttle buses will provide transfers to Randell Street from free parking at the showgrounds.

Myall Place Dear Editor, I feel that the Mid Murray Council has lost the plot. The other week I attended a public meeting regarding an application for land development adjacent to Myall Place.

From the beginning it became apparent that there was no consideration that the proposal would not be forwarded to the appropriate State authorities although it is within the powers of the council to do so. It was also obvious that little or no information was to be given about the developer, the particular expenses that the developer would meet, or what need there was for the development. All that was offered was that the councillors, acting CEO, council officers and

consultants might, if they see fit, add any points raised, to the submission.

Perhaps it might have been within the law although this was not explained. It certainly wasn’t within the spirit.

To the councillors and council employees I say remembers us?

We elect you. Remember us?

We pay your allowances.

Public Transport in Mannum n last month’s article we covered the range of public transport options available for residents of Mannum who want to travel to Murray Bridge, Mount Barker or Adelaide (this also included information about the Swan Reach bus services for some of the smaller towns in our council region).

We would now like to follow this up with a request for information and feedback from you!

Murray Transport Connections recently received a request from Mid Murray Council to “consider opportunities and/or costs for the establishment of a bus service to Murray Bridge (in addition to the Link SA School bus) and opportunity and/or costs for a possible partnership with the State Government, or a Council subsidised service, to provide a better direct bus service to Adelaide from Mannum.”

Our report has been presented to Council, and the next step is to meet with Link SA who have the contract for supplying public transport services in our local

area, to discuss what options there might be to trial a new service (any new service would need to be commercially viable, as there is currently no funding available for subsidised services).

So, we would like to hear from you if you have any ideas that we can discuss with Link SA? For example, one suggestion is to trial a bus service from Mannum to Mount Pleasant, so passengers can access the bus services that go to Tea Tree Plaza (and then on to Adelaide).

New Approach to Youth Services he Mid Murray Council is dedicated to providing local yo u ng p eo p le with an opportunity to have a voice in their community, have access to evolving programs and events and be part of a new look service approach.

The Mid Murray Council has significantly invested in programs and events which encourage young people to be healthy and active, with the National Award Winning Fun 4 YOUth program featuring one of

the most popular initiatives.

The Mayor of the Mid Murray Council, Mr Dave Burgess, said that as of July 1st the Council will adopt a slightly different approach to planning, evaluating and implementing services to young people. The Fun 4 YOUth monthly rotation of games and activities will be move towards a focus on young people having a voice about what they want in their community; successively guiding Council’s actions and practice.

“June is set to be the last regular monthly rotation for Fun 4 YOUth, with free Martial Arts workshops being delivered throughout 10 local Mid Murray towns. We’ve worked hard to build the identifiable Fun 4 YOUth brand, which will continue to deliver and support various activities and events for young people, just in a new way,” said the Community Development Officer, Ms Loechel.

What The World Needs Now beautiful event happened during a primary school visit to the Mannum Dock Museum of River History.

I was working with a group of 8 and 9 year-olds out the front by the big map in the foyer and I was discussing the topic of why William Randell decided to build his first paddle steamer, the PS Mary Ann. I had got across, or so I thought, the concept that there were a lot of miners in Victoria needing food and that travel took too long by horse and cart to take provisions across there, plus the fact that a horse and cart can’t carry much of a payload.

So there I was, with 15 eager little eyes upon me, and I asked, (following up all that conversation), “what do people need most?” I was working towards the answer ‘bread’, as a means of getting onto the fact that William Randell had a flour mill, and hence ...

The answer I got was just unexpectedly gorgeous, for one dear little soul put up his hand and replied, “Love!”

I just hope that child never ever gets harassed for being such a caring, well brought up and obviously very nice little boy in his future days at school.

The world needs more of his kind.

Mid Murray Support Services

The Killing Fields of Schuetze Street nce a pleasant, quiet street which is included in the town’s history walks, Schuetze Street has become the scene of senseless slaughter at the hands of a depraved, vile evil cat killer. Wanton violence! Callous Cruelty!

Pet cats are being lured to their deaths, abducted and then being killed in the most horrendous acts of barbarism. These cats were not feral cats but dearly loved, cherished family members. Well cared for and nurtured. Cats are sentient creatures. No excuse justifies this inhumane depravity.

Imagine the sheer terror, pain and suffering that these poor unfortunate creatures were forced to endure! The uncertainty, pain and grief of the grief-stricken owners, not knowing what had become of their much loved pets.

Between the 11th and 22nd of May three dead cats were found in exactly the same spot outside the gates of the former ANZ bank in Schuetze Street. Not for one minute does anyone think that it is those residents who were responsible.

All three were mutilated, the second cat hideously so, having been decapitated. The first and second cats were black and the third, found on the 22nd, was a large, long haired, apricot/ginger and white cat.

These findings give weight to suspicions formed approximately 2½ years ago when both a short-haired grey cat and another black cat were discovered dead in exactly the same spot. At the time, it was assumed that these cats were the results of traffic accidents. But now we know differently. Over recent years, lots of cats have mysteriously disappeared all over Mannum. Did they also meet the same fate?

Surely our community must be absolutely incensed by this diabolical killing.

The perpetrator has severe, u n d e r l yi n g , p s y c h i a t r i c problems. What divine right does he consider he has been granted to warrant his

despicable behaviour? Can he be prowling the quiet streets of Mannum, planning, stalking and trapping these poor animals?

It has all the behavioural elements of a serial killer, whether the victims be animals or people. Does he take trophies? Several of the poor defenceless cats had their collars missing (a known fact). There certainly is a severe psychiatric perspective here.

There is a solution of course – perhaps he should endure the same fate as these poor animals?

Unfortunately this is highly illegal.

We deem ourselves to be above primitive societies – ponder on that. There was a time, not so long ago, when men were hung for stealing a sheep.

We are all bound by the laws of the land, and are hopefully self-governed by our own standards, ethics and morals.

There are societies that actually revere animals. Ideally, we should all take this on board, otherwise we run the risk of becoming a rampant society, lacking in empathy, compassion and the milk of human kindness.

Perish the thought! Sadly, we are already exhibiting signs of this spreading sickness.

Mannum Community, let us band together to stop these atrocious acts. We all value our community and its residents. Let us unite! Stop them now!

Perhaps you already have suspicions regarding the killer’s identity. Perhaps you already have some information which will lead to the prosecution of this monster. If you value our safe community and our peaceful environment, speak up!

Notify the local police.

These are criminal acts which carry severe penalties, including major fines. There is also probable imprisonment. Perhaps that is what he deserves! After all, he imprisoned those poor cats!

Lock up your cats and perhaps your daughters as well! Cats today, children tomorrow?

National Volunteers Week id Murray Support S e r vi ces volunteers celebrated National Volunteers Week in May by being treated to a wonderful home-cooked roast dinner with all of the trimmings at the Nildottie Hall. Volunteers were presented with a Recognition Pin and a Volunteer of the Month and 10 year service award was presented to Swan Reach volunteer Colin Hutchinson. Colin is over 80 but still going strong as a much valued vollie for Mid Murray Support Services.

Please remember that we need to be able to on-sell your donated goods. In most cases if it’s broken or doesn’t work it’s probably no good to anyone else

so we really can’t use it. It costs us valuable time and money to dump goods that we can’t use so we’d rather not have them in the first place.

After many months of planning CHIPS (Community Help for the Isolated with Personal Support) Inc will cease to exist on Sunday 30th June 2013. The services provided by CHIPS and Mid Murray Community Support Services for many years will all be rolled into one organisation, Mid Murray Support Services Inc, from 1st July 2013. The changes will make our organisation, governance, finances and administration much more efficient. Our caring volunteer driven services to the Mid Murray community will continue as usual and will improve as we continue to strive for service excellence.

Town Hall Troupers he Murray Bridge Town Hall Troupers is now up and running with dance sessions well underway. This is a great opportunity for anyone aged 50 or over to become involved in their own production.

Workshops will be run under all of these themes over the next 18 months with the view of presenting a review style stage performance late in 2014.

he Lions Club held their auction on Saturday 25th May. A large crowd was on hand at the Showgrounds and the day was very successful. A big thank you to everyone who donated goods to be sold on the Club’s behalf.

Community Den Extensions Work on doubling the size of the Den at the Showgrounds is almost completed. The upgrade has seen the installation of a gas hot water system, carpet tiles laid and painting

completed. Members held a working bee to concrete the front verandah and the Club sin cere l y t h a n k s K B M Concreting for their time and use of equipment at no charge to complete the work.

Part funding for the upgrade was received as a grant from the Australian Lions Foundation. The Den is being used by some community groups for meetings.

Regional Economic Forums ate April to early May, Regional Development Australia (RDA) Murraylands and Riverland in conjunction with our eight local government partners successfully held nine regional economic forums across the Murraylands and Riverland.

The forums were a great opportunity to inform the community about local and regional projects currently being undertaken in the region.

They also enabled RDA and councils to find out first-hand

from the community what strengths of the region need to be built on and what barriers need to be overcome, for the region to be prosperous into the future.

Over the nine forums more than 230 people provided information which will now be used to assist in the development of our regional strategic plan, otherwise known as the Murraylands and Riverland Regional Roadmap for 2013-2016. Notes from

each of the forums have now been drafted and circulated for further comment by those who attended.

At each forum the community provided new and fresh perspectives on the current status of their region.

Attendees ranged from local business people, councillors, school teachers, police officers, health service professionals and interested community members.

Mannum History Group hanks once again to those who supported the project at the Mannum Cemetery.

As part of South Australia’s History Month, our group was involved this year by having an open day at the Cemetery on Mother’s Day – Sunday May 12th. The other activity was the Heritage Walk starting at the Mannum Information Centre, walking along Randell Street taking in the heritage aspects, and ending with a visit to the Shearer Cottage at Palm Court Café. Thanks to all who helped out organizing the day and making it all come together.

Our town certainly has a treasure trove of significant history in this state.

Astronomer’s Corner n a southerly direction, almost overhead, around 9pm are the Southern Cross and the pointers. Having just risen in the east is the constellation Scorpius, interacting with the glare of the full moon at present. In the west is Leo the lion and more overhead around this time is Saturn in Libra with Corvus and Spica on the ecliptic; tailing after Leo the lion.

The eclipse we have just had was an opportunity to try a pinhole camera using two pieces of card, one with a darning needle size hole casting an image on the second piece of white card, held at roughly arms length. The eclipse, although only partial (38%), could be observed fully and with safety with this simple method. In other places the sun was up to 79% covered.

The use of the simplest ways to form an image have been explored in history with the camera obscura, using a convex lens in a darkened room and also a pin hole camera to cast an image onto a cellophane sheet in a covered box. If eclipses are of special interest to you it may be an idea to set aside a scope just for that, as there are lots of additional accessories available for that purpose. Aiming your scope at the sun generates heat at the lens, which can be dissipated using a Herschel wedge or other forms of filtering, which can be either bought or constructed. The possibility of using the equipment for other observations such as the nearly full moon is always an option.

The sun is a potential danger optically and needs to be respected; it can take only seconds to do irreparable damage to the eye even with a reflected image. Make sure the filters are tried and tested.

The sun uses more energy in 10 seconds than we will ever use in our lifetime, hence its intensity. At present the sun is rising approximately 65º ENE and reaches only about 35º above the horizon at midday (reaching furthest north on 21st of June) before it begins its journey back towards the east.

This exhibition is a partnership with HYPA - Helping Young People Achieve. “The Third Space: intercultural crafting” will be exhibited in the Main Gallery. This extension of Craftsouth’s Traditional Craft Skills program includes an amazing array of different crafts by a range of artists from all over the world.

he world we live in is obsessed with finding happiness. The problem with this is that no one can be happy all the time. Life brings times of joy and times of sadness, times of ease and times of dis-ease (difficulty). This is a given that we all must learn to live with. Jesus never promised that life would be trouble free.

The truth is that feeling happy is often a fleeting moment that soon passes with the onset of the next problem. If a person takes on the expectation that they should be happy all the time, then how will they feel when things in their life are not going well? Disappointed, maybe even depressed.

The good news is that Jesus promised something much more powerful than happiness.

Jesus promised to leave us with something called peace. My experience is that I can have an inner peace, an inner feeling of

calm, even when I face troubled times. The Holy Spirit, which is alive and living in the community of Mannum right now, is waiting to give people that peace and inner calm, no matter what difficulties you are facing.

When the Holy Spirit comes into your life, he brings a realisation that no matter how badly other people treat you, you are loved by Jesus your creator. Jesus says, “ I love you, full stop!” This is unconditional love that brings an inner peace. It is so foreign to most of us, in a world where conditional love is the norm, where human love is so often full of conditions, where people say “I will love you if...”. The unconditional love of Jesus living inside of us not

only brings a sense that I am accepted and loved, and that I matter, it also gives people the strength and courage to take the risk of loving others. Jesus connects our own sense of inner peace directly to how we treat others.

The following passage, by an unknown author, was circulated at St. Gregory’s Abbey, Michigan, in 1985.

The hearts of a great many have already been exposed to inner peace and it is possible that people everywhere could come down with it in epidemic proportions. Mental Musings inter is now officially here and everyone to whom you speak will have a different perspective on it, depending on background and environment.

Some folk love rugging up and getting out in the wind and rain, others to sit by the fire or heater to read or watch DVDs, while others may become physically or mentally ill due to the season and lack of sunshine.

A lot of issues in people’s lives seem to reach a peak at this time of year and there is actually what is called ‘Seasonal Affective Disorder’ (SAD) that can be quite debilitating.

We can open up the curtains and blinds of our homes to let in what light there is (much more than in some parts of the world).

We can also open up our minds to the positive things this season brings.

Hopefully, there will be enough rain to fill the dams and reservoirs, water crops, gardens and parks and flush out tanks and wetlands.

Musing in a positive direction sometimes takes considerable effort. If we only watch and listen to mainly ‘doom and gloom’ (who said what about who, etc.) we can easily ‘go under’. So let’s all search out the positives in and around our everyday lives. We may have to muse hard but the more we do, hopefully the easier it will become.

Some folks seem to have more difficulties than others, with much pain and sadness, so we can watch out for where we can add a little sunshine for someone else.

We’ve mused before about the positive things we can actually do for others, but for the good of ourselves and our community, it cannot happen too often.

fter 15 years of the current pelican and hills logo, Council wish to rebrand and endorse a new logo with a more contemporary look and feel.

There are 3 designs which have been proposed. The existing logo was considered not to be representative of some of the towns and communities throughout the Mid Murray Council area. Mid Murray Council seeks staff and community feedback on the proposed logos.

Council also sees the rebranding opportunity as timely, given the adoption of a new brand for South Australia launched in March 2013.

Co uncil will co nsid er community views on the three designs at the 8th July Council meeting, where a decision will be made. Not all Mid Murray Council communications will bear the new logo immediately.

To reduce costs, it will only be

used when existing stock such as letterhead, business cards, flags and other highly visible items require replenishing, or signs need replacing. The new logo will be utilised on the website, in social media properties and other items. A staged rollout of new town signage displaying the new logo will be undertaken over time. Therefore, a mix of the old and new logos and signage will be seen for some time into the future.

When considering your preference for the new brand of the Mid Murray Council, there are a few points to keep in mind.

A strong brand should deliver the message clearly, confirm Council’s credibility, and p r o vid e motivation and emotional connection. When taking the 3 logo choices into account, it should be remembered the Council logo is a symbol of identification. These logos do not ‘sell’ the Council

directly, nor do they describe or explain our organisation.

The various brand elements which inspired the designs include: • representation of the regions nature, the land, the river and the cliffs; • adaptable and earthy colours to suit various scenes; • inclusive of whole of the Council area; • the river being the major point of identification.

The 3 logo options will be displayed on the Mid Murray Council website with a short survey for public consultation until the closing date of 21st June. Advertisements will also appear in all three newspapers and where possible, community newsletters.

Works, Services and Projects Update from Mid Murray Council selection of items discussed or determined at the Monday 13th May 2013 meeting.

A

• Work has commenced on the repair of the car park and the reconstruction of Cascade Road. Council received flood repair funds for this work.

• Council is seeking advice from the State Government Riverbank Slumping Advisory Committee and Local Government Risk Services to ascertain what can be done so that East Front Road can be reopened.

• Road closures have been approved for the Mannum Truck and Ute Show to be held on Sunday 9th June 2013.

• Fulton Hogan has been awarded the 2012/2013 reseal program. Work will begin later than planned, due to staffing operational matters.

• Council will forward a submission on the State Government proposals for improving swimming pool safety laws.

• Simon Horstmann has been appointed General Inspector (Friday to Monday and public holidays).

• Following Council’s submission on the potential impact of the Building Code of Australia amendments to premises in the River Murray flood plain, the Deputy Premier and Minister for Planning has recognised the significant implications for building owners.

• A new Healthy Murraylands policy has

been adopted by Council.

• Council representatives and the General Manager of Link SA will meet to ascertain whether better public transport services between Mannum and Adelaide and Mannum and Murray Bridge are possible.

• The Mid Murray Council Community Services team won the South Australian Local Government Management Local Hero Award for excellence in community services.

• Following The Elector Representation Review a report will be prepared proposing three Council wards, 9 councillors and a Mayor elected at large for community comment.

• A contract to revalue Council land and buildings has been awarded to Maloney Field Services. They will also prepare a Building Assessment and Maintenance Plan.

• The State Valuation Department general valuation of the Mid Murray Council area, with an effective valuation date of 1st January 2013, was $2,091,766,020, a decrease of approximately 2.97%.

• The Department for Environment and Natural Resources has advised that Council’s share of the SA Murray Darling Basin Natural Resources Management Levy for 2013/14 is $212,715, an increase of 1.7%.

• A submission was forwarded to the State Minister for Regional

Development highlighting that the Draft Regional Statement 2012 contained no goals, strategies, time lines for completion or responsible Agencies/Departments. Further, there was no commitment to funding for infrastructure, projects and services for regional and rural South Australia, as opposed to the Victorian Government’s $1.0 billion Regional Growth Fund and $631 million report “Ready for Tomorrow – A Blueprint for Regional and Rural Victoria” for a sustainable and profitable regional and rural Victoria.

• Letters sent to the State Members for Stuart, Dan van Holst Pellekaan MP, Schubert, Ivan Venning MP, Hammond, Adrian Pederick MP, Chaffey, Tim Whetstone MP and John Dawkins MLC highlight that the replacement and renewal of the existing five timber hulled ferries should be commencing now to ensure the continued operation and sustainability of this much needed service.

• A motion will be submitted to the Murray and Mallee Local Government Association requesting that Zero Waste SA be approached to implement a funded recycling collection service for councils for used tyres, permapine posts and dripper line irrigation on a similar basis to

drumMUSTER. • A letter has been received from the Heart Foundation requesting consideration of smoke free outdoor areas and events. A report will be submitted to the next council meeting.

• Council has expressed an interest in participating in the Local Government Association Procurement Roadmap Program to improve the procurement processes and efficiencies of Council.

• Rebranding and endorsing a new logo is being considered. Council considers that the existing logo, largely encompassing a pelican, is not representative of towns and communities throughout the Mid Murray Council area. A proposal with three corporate concepts will be available for public comment shortly.

• The annual performance appraisal of the Chief Executive Officer based on a skills and characteristics assessment, performance indicators and goals for achievement has approved a salary increase of 3% of the current base salary with an additional 1.5% to reflect performance achievements above satisfactory. The additional 1.5% will not form part of the base rate. The contract between the CEO and Council has been extended to 19th March 2017.

Ageing in the Murraylands

with Millie where one or more older people are being cared for, I start feeling queasy when I ‘click’ that it’s always quiet and orderly, no matter what time of the day or day of the week I’m there.

Everything is neat, tidy, in order.

Everyone has a place and they are in it, sitting quietly, maybe with TV or music on at a volume that is not too loud to be disturbing, but too soft for most people with impaired hearing to appreciate, few residents are moving around.

If the person(s) being cared for have dementia, this constant state of calm and orderliness is even more concerning. Like all of us, these women and men need conversation, companionship, stimulation. Some will want to move around, perhaps constantly or at certain times of the day, and not just indoors.

When my queasiness sets in, I’m reminded of the words in The Charter of Residents’ Rights and Responsibilities which every care facility must have on display for all to read: “Each Resident has the right to live in a safe, secure and homelike environment, and to move freely both within and outside the residential care service without undue

Most people knew most of the hymns, although there were a few that were new to some of us. Jesus Loves Me (for seniors) was one where the words were a bit different, but the familiar tune saved the day. Other favourites included How Great Thou Art, Take Thou my Hand and Lead Me, and Amazing Grace.

At the end of the singing, the group strongly supported making such sing-a-longs a regular event. In order to succeed, these events need people to put up their favourite hymns, so that they can be included in the program.

So keep your eyes and ears open for information about future events, and be ready to choose your favourite.

any people take drugs like Temaze, Mogadon, Alodorm, Serepax, Alepam, Valium, Antenex.

They are in a group of drugs called benzodiazepines and are used to treat anxiety, insomnia, agitation, seizures, muscle spasms and alcohol withdrawal.

A recently published French study has found a 50% increase in the risk of developing dementia with prolonged use of benzodiazepines in older people. The British Medical Journal (Sept. 2012) reported: “The researchers note that while many of the benzodiazepine medications remain useful for treating anxiety and insomnia, there is increasing evidence that their use may induce adverse outcomes in the elderly, such as serious falls, fall-related fractures and, now, dementia. The findings add to the accumulating evidence that the use of these drugs is associated with increased risk of dementia and, if true, that this would constitute a substantial public health concern.”

These results focussed my attention on how spick-and-span orderliness may illuminate drug use in aged care.

As next of kin and carers, we need to speak up and ask questions of doctors and nurses when we are concerned that ‘the spark’ in a person’s character is vanishing and they are becoming too quiet and submissive.

Aminya is a community based, non-profit, incorporated Association providing quality residential aged care services to the people in Mannum and surrounding areas.

Issue Number 80

Mid Murray Homes for the Aged ver the past six months progression of the Australian Government’s Living Longer, Living Better reforms have been monitored by Aminya. Most of the reforms are due to commence from July 2014. Detailed information on how the reforms will impact on residents and the organisation are yet to be clarified.

Legislative changes associated with the reforms have been finalized and are expected to be approved shortly. Operational issues will then become clearer thereby enabling more detailed information to be distributed to residents, their families, staff and the broader community. In addition to identifying changes that will be required locally to implement the reforms, Aminya is waiting for announcements regarding the outcome of the Aged Care Approvals round that closed in December 2012.

Aminya applied for up to 18 additional places in that round.

Progress is also being made on a separate process that involves the introduction of nationally consistent legislation for

providers of community housing. The 22 units and houses operated by Aminya under current state legislation will be covered by the new national system which starts in January 2014. Aminya will have 18 months in which to adjust to these new requirements.

A re-accreditation survey has been scheduled for 5 - 7 August 2013. During this process the two assessors from the Aged Care Standards and Accreditation Agency will audit Aminya’s compliance with the 44 Standards. The assessors will meet with residents, their families, staff and others during this survey to gather feedback on our services.

At the May meeting the Board endorsed a draft budget for 2013/14. With the Australian Government providing an increase in resident care subsidies of 1.7% there will be ongoing pressures on the operating budget. Included within the budget is provision for an outdoor area that will be suitable for tenants, residents and guests to participate in an

environment that supports social interaction. A recent bequest will provide funding for this project.

There has been a recent welcome increase in the number of volunteers who regularly visit and contribute to the welfare of residents. This support is greatly appreciated by residents and their families. Members of the community interested in becoming a volunteer at Aminya are invited to contact Ruth Schwertferger, 8569 1749.

In addition to those volunteers who provide support to residents another group of volunteers continues to devote many hours to refreshing the main entrance area and the upgrading of other gardens within the units.

Preliminary details for this year’s annual general meeting, which is scheduled for the evening of Tuesday 24 th September 2013, are being prepared. Details will be advertised in due course.

W

ell, the Autumn cold snap has hit us but the days are just beautiful and it doesn’t deter the folk from enjoying a multitude of things that are happening at the Hall. Not that the outings seem to be the most popular event on the calendar, but we seem to have the regular smiling faces on the bus and the lively conversations and jokes that emanate through the day are just great.

We have outings to the Red Cross Shop at Cambrai where you can get the best bargains around. We have our Morning Tea there, sitting in the store or on the sunny open veranda watching the world go by.

Another popular excursion is the trip to Murray Bridge, where we shop to our hearts content and then have lunch at the Christian Book Shop and what a lunch it is. Today the (24/5/2013) we are going fishing and judging by the blue skies through the office window I think it will be a day to remember; and that includes Morning Tea! If you would like to be part of the fun, pick up the June Calendar, see what a great crowd there is at the Hall and see what we do. You are always welcome to come in for a chat and a cuppa. Round 3 Fund Successes hree local projects within the Murraylands and Riverland region have obtained a total of $928,580 in funding through Round 3 of the Regional Development Australia Fund.

The purpose of Round 3 was to support small towns with a population of less than 30,000.

A total of $50 million in grant funding was to be distributed to successful applicants in 55 RDA regions throughout Australia.

Nine applications were received from the Murraylands and Riverland region, all of a high calibre and standard. Five of these were invited to proceed to full application; three of which gained funding.

The Renmark Paringa District Council was awarded $376,280 for the $868,313 Renmark Town Centre Revitalisation Stage 1 project as part of the SEE

Mannum Football Club t is great to be able to report that the season is progressing quite well for the Club. We have some big social events coming up in the next few months and would really appreciate the support of the district. The junior side of the Club is in really good hands and the results of good administration and coaching are showing in the performances of the teams. Our Under 13 and Under 15 squads are full of talent and are a pleasure to watch playing good football.

These lads are the future of the Club.

Our Under 17's team has had a few wins and have improved immensely under the guidance of Terry Allen and his staff.

The main thing is that they continue to improve and that we have sufficient players to field a side.

Our Reserves side is also getting their act together under coach Brett Wallace. It is not an easy task coaching and for that matter, playing this grade and the boys are putting some creditable games together. Our

The District Loxton Waikerie was awarded $442,300 for the Waikerie Sports Precinct Stage 2 Development which will enable upgrades to facilities and assist in attracting sporting events to the region.

Southern Mallee District Council gained $110,000 for the $220,000 Pinnaroo Wetlands Walking Trails and Recreation Open Space project. The new wetlands area will provide paths suitable for all leisure activities and incorporate a public picnic area and amenities block.

Outcomes from RDAF Round 4 which supported projects valued between $500,000 and $15 million are expected to be announced in early July.

The Mannum Sub Branch of the RSL would like to acknowledge the dedication of an estimated 600+ ex service personnel and members of the public who attended this year’s Dawn Service. This attendance was by far the biggest in recent years and certainly dispels the myth (spread by some of our politicians and academics) that “Anzac Day is not relevant”.

The weather was very kind to us all and especially to the Aroona Scouts and Twin Peaks Venturers who held an all-night vigil at the Memorial.

These fine young people had to stand at the Monument for an hour at a time without speaking or moving.

Our thanks go to them for the way in which they conducted themselves.

Full credit goes to these boys and girls, and their leaders. A special thank you to Scout Tristan who handled the sound system.

Great to see so many veterans join our march to the Club rooms. It was a little ragged as there had been no practice, but next year we will all know what’s coming and respond accordingly.

Breakfast was held at the RSL/Rowing Club Rooms and the Lions cooked a staggering 300+ meals which meant having to call in the ‘cavalry’ to find more supplies.

Our sincere thanks go to Lions, and our own social committee for a job well done.

Our thanks also go to Mid Murray Council for the provision of the power supply. Some issues still exist with our amplifier. We will be looking at further improvements for 2014.

Other Board members are Pat Crow, Catering; Trevor Paech, Greens Manager and Marlene Davies, who has not applied for Bar Manager, but will

take over the roll of House and Grounds. All in all a very competent team to lead the Club into the future Thursday and Saturday social bowls start now. All are welcome as we have a very friendly group of people enjoying this great game.

he President of the Australian Conservation Foundation, Ian Lowe, just gave a terrific presentation on TV. He had the statistics to show that with a little effort we could provide everyone on the planet with a decent standard of living; actually only a small fraction of the global defence budget would do it.

Of course, with everyone housed and fed and comfy there would be no need for nasty wars either, right? All environmentally sustainable too.

I was on a high until I went to the supermarket. They gave me a plastic bag for my groceries. I have a boot full of those green ones and I remember the fuss that went on forever, warning us we’d have to get used to it. When did the ‘nasty’

plastic ones sneak back in? I never heard a word. No one seems to know, at least not the folks in the supermarket. I asked. Then I said, “I assume that bag is biodegradable,” and the answer was, “It’s reusable.” Which I suspect means the things will last forever when they start blowing in the wind again. If the ‘science’ was right the first time, why are we backing up just when we got used to taking bags everywhere? And what do I do with all those green bags in the boot? Worse, how do we save the planet with this sort of thing going on? Even worse, who do we trust?

That’s it. No more daytime TV. It’s just too big a letdown.

SA Governor to Attend 50 Year Celebration for PS Marion ifty years ago, the PS Marion became a static museum in the Randell Dry Dock at Mannum, cementing the small township as the birthplace of the paddle steamer in Australia.

To celebrate this milestone a river festival day will be conducted at Mary Ann Reserve on Saturday 15th June 2013.

The Governor of South Australia, His Excellency Rear Admiral Kevin Scarce AC CSC RANR, and Mrs Scarce will be in attendance and on board the PS Marion from Bowhill to Mannum taking part in the reenactment of what was supposed to be the last voyage of the Marion in 1963.

“We are honoured to welcome His Excellency the Governor to Mannum for this auspicious occasion to celebrate the 50th anniversary of the paddle steamer in Mannum,” said Dave Burgess, Mid Murray Council Mayor.

“We will have original crew members present at the festival and on board the Marion which will be a marvellous opportunity for our current volunteers to reminisce of the old days and the difficulties crew members experienced to keep her afloat from Berri to Mannum.”

Chris Snow, original crew member and journalist with the Stock Journal in 1963 remembers, “It was a spectacularly memorable trip.

“Big crowds everywhere Marion stopped, people lining the river banks and cliff tops to see her, a big bonfire when she came into Waikerie after dark, and a massive crowd at Mannum when she steamed in, black smoke belching from the boiler and the crew in V

“Probably none of us thought that Marion would be restored to the pristine condition in which she now is and it’s a good feeling to know that our efforts, even though they were no great hardship, were worthwhile. She’s a credit to everyone who put in the thousands of hours work on her.”

John Norris, owner of the Marion in 1963, reminisced “Back in 1962 top River Murray Historian, Harry Godson and I discussed the establishment of a fitting memorial to the paddle steamer era. The boat as to be the centre piece of a Museum of River History based around the old Randell Dry Dock.”

“Things started to move fast and on June 6th 1963 the old boat slipped her mooring at Berri, starting what was then hailed as ‘The Marion’s Last Voyage’.

“Not in my wildest dreams did I think that half a century later this historic occasion would be reenacted. Having languished for around 30 years in the Dock a wise decision was made to restore the boat to operating condition. A successful two decades of successful operation will be marked in 2014.

“The Mannum Dock Museum of River History is a wonderful example of what can be achieved by good management and voluntary efforts.

he Net is a mixed blessing. It is rather like the old fashioned Christmas pudding with threepences in it; a lot of pudding and only a few threepences. However there are a number of sites which have specific types of music so I thought I would describe a few.

If you like the popular music of yester year then you will find quite a feast if you Google™ “ upchucky.com ”. When the listing for “upchucky.com” appears on the screen, click or double click, and that will take you to the site itself. The site is well worth exploring, however I will concentrate on the right hand side where the “Fun Jukeboxes” can be seen.

Click on “50's Party Fun” and a new screen appears. If you scroll downwards, towards the bottom a list of years in decades will appear.

Clicking on any particular year will produce anything up to 25 popular hits from that year.

They are in order of popularity. The list is shown inside the jukebox image. You can scroll down the list and select any particular tune you favour in the list. Remember that the list comes from the US radio and does not reflect altogether what was popular in Australia. Also, as the years passed, the importance of radio diminished so the lists may not reflect the true pops of the time.

Perhaps you like jazz. One email circulating at present lists a lost tape of a performance of Louis Armstrong and Danny Kaye singing “When the Saints Go Marching In”. It is worth viewing because of the usual Danny Kaye vocal

Since these people are professionals and rely on payment for their living, it is less than clever to deny them. Of course there is the other side of the coin where the owners of the copyright have almost as little right to it as the pirate. Fats Waller sold the copyright to “Ain’t Misbehavin’” for fifty dollars. I think the purchaser has done very well out of that deal.

Local aboriginal tradesmen have been asked to assist with repairs to the switchboard and damaged walls and ceilings. A working bee tackled general grounds cleanup and will continue with repairs.

The aim is to create a welcoming community centre with a focus on youth. The Ngarrindjeri Regional Authority has offered to assist with business operations.

On May 26th another Deadly Fun Run was held at Sturt Reserve. Despite wet conditions a hardy group of aboriginal and white competitors, young and old, took to the circuit. Prizes, certificates and a healthy breakfast rewarded the runners.

New Logo

and two other ratepayers recently attended a meeting with the Mayor and CEO to address concerns regarding some of council’s procedures. We were told basically that we should let sleeping dogs lie and that they didn’t have the resources for a full and proper review of our concerns.

I now read in the Standard that we (council) have a marketing project officer (I assume ratepayer funded) and that Mid Murray is to undergo a rebranding with a new logo. Council doesn’t have the resources to attend to a legitimate request of ratepayer’s concerns or to adequately investigate breaches of council’s bylaws but can find the money for tourism and events that benefit business and non-residents.

The new logo’s focus is on 3 colours to represent us and our values - green for agriculture, orange for the land and the cliffs and blue for the river. The only time I can recall council talking about agriculture is when Mayor Dave Burgess wrote that he was happy that the new council was made up of business people when it was previously made up of farmers. But they do sponsor the Agricultural Shows, Cadell pumpkin fest and have given $10,000 dollars towards the Truckn’ Ute fest and of course farmers use and rely on trucks and utes. If the council was supportive of agriculture in the district it would be addressing topical issues of foreign ownership, GM crops, carving upfarmland for non-farming practices (including mining and exploration), the impending global food and water crisis and other long term management issues.

Regarding the other colours, I understand the connection with the orange cliffs and the land, but blue to acknowledge the river? I’ve lived by the river most of my life and have only ever known it to be brown.

To give the people a real reflection of council values, perhaps they should adopt a logo of a shield divided into quarters with pictures – one to have an excavator, another, a jet ski, one with a carton of beer and in the last, a truck. A white feather in the centre could depict the ‘management’ of corellas and an underlying scroll could read, ‘We Know What’s Best for You’.

Council could have put the logo issue to the community for feedback. Transparent, inclusive and modern organisations would take this approach. We are perceived as a community that doesn’t care but that’s not true. As an owner of a property in another council area, I constantly receive invitations in the mail to participate in big decisions that they (the council) have to consider. I feel valued and grateful that they ask for my opinions. This is a genuine gesture on behalf of a connected and progressive council.

Green Council

I really enjoyed the article by Carl Gross in the last Mannum Mag. His reflections are spot on and it was good to hear him raise issues of peak oil and unlimited growth.

In regard to Lyn Gross’ letter to the editor I offer this. Members of the Murray Eco Arts Collective had concerns about the design and building of the Mannum Green shopping centre some time ago so we visited the project manager and asked about environmental aspects of the development. He told us they had met all the required environmental criteria and when we asked about greening Mannum Green he said council had requested they not plant trees in the car park as it was going to be RV friendly and would be too hard for large vehicles to negotiate. So no trees except for some future landscaping along the main road and minimum requirements set by council. I also made enquiries of council several years ago about building a straw bale house but was told very clearly, “We do not want that kind of building here.” Mmm, but let’s put a concrete monster in the heart of Mannum. I have also asked council if they would support a sustainability expo but there has been no follow up. Not a priority or not enough resources? Who knows, they aren’t big on communication with some of us. Perhaps MMC could appoint a sustainability officer that would take tourism and development under their wing.

The MEAC also tried to have the Old Mannum Primary School retrofitted to address environmental issues, including investigating a waterless composting toilet but the MMSS pushed ahead with time lines and pressure on council so they could move in as soon as possible. With a 10 year peppercorn lease signed and council spending of well over $100,000 of ratepayer’s money approved, environmental concerns were not on the agenda.

Arts, Culture, Trucks and Utes

On 22nd May I was standing with 2 friends on the footpath in front of Food Land in Mannum. It was a cold, wet and overcast day but the street was busy with folk going about their business, crossing the street at intervals not just at the ‘pedestrian crossing’. People, most of them elders, carrying bags and boxes of goodies. People who take a little more time getting into and out of their cars. People who move a little slower and often react a little slower.

There was a rumble that grew closer but it was not thunder. As we turned toward the noise, a large truck carting a load of onions came up the street with no intention of slowing down through the heart of town.

We assumed he was travelling at the speed limit but

from a pedestrians point of view he was loud, intimidating and appeared to be going way too fast to react quickly to any one or thing that did not move fast enough to get out of his way. I looked at the driver and he was laughing almost hysterically. Maybe something funny on the radio? We could not miss the name of his big rig – “Low Standards”. My friends and I were shocked at the speed at which he was travelling disregarding the people in the street and the adverse weather conditions and the ridiculous name that was proudly enshrined on his truck.

When the council makes a decision they often reference how they justify it under their Strategic Plan.

The Truckn’ Ute show is justified under the heading of Community Strategy 2.12 – Promote the benefits of cultural and public art activities.

The preamble to council’s decision to support the event states that its success has prompted the Progress Association to hold the event on an annual basis to further promote Mannum.

Council supports this under the guise of arts and culture but admit that it will also be a trade show.

Under the pretence of benefits to the community, the Mayor is quoted in the Standard; “closing off the main street brings a new and exciting ambience to the township where visitors can explore the shops, make their way to the riverfront and enjoy the trucks up close.” Sounds like a benefit to tourists and businesses rather than a cultural and public art activity for the community.

So last year’s Truck’n Ute show was a “resounding success”. Can theorganisers/council please define their interpretation of success? How many tourists came?

How many locals made money? How many outsiders made money? How many vested interests made money?

How many locals were inconvenienced? How many traffic infringements were issued?

Personally I believe we should support art and culture but they should not be a convenient veil to promote tourism and special events with a focus on developing income streams for business as they already get a big slice of council attention and ratepayer money.

We are now, according to council minutes, to get a part time Governance Officer. I would have thought the current employees and elected members of council would be up to date with issues of governance, but given some of the practices and decisions of MMC over the last few years, I believe employing a Governance Officer would be money well spent.

The Hall - In Focus here have been a few changes at The Hall due to a lack of staff over the past 8 weeks. This has meant there have not been as many activities as usual; however activities which participants enjoy the most were retained. The social inclusion outing on May 17th to The Christian Bookshop was well attended with 11 people coming together to share a meal.

The June social inclusion outing is on Friday 28th and will be at a new mystery location. If you would like to join us please contact Jillian to book your place on the bus.

We also had our regular fortnightly shopping trips to Murray Bridge which are a great opportunity for participants to access services not available in Mannum. The June shopping trips will be on 14th and 28th.

Beading with Penny is still a regular fixture on the calendar, it is done off site at Penny’s workshop, this enables people to be creative in a different

environ me n t a n d gi ves participants access to more of Penny’s brightly coloured baubles. How much bling is enough you may ask? I don’t know the answer to that but I’m going to keep on beading till I find out. The June beading workshop is on Wednesday 12th, so if you want to make a great gift for someone special or would like to try a new craft this is an opportunity to give it a try.

Chris drove the bus for this month’s trip to the Cambrai Red Cross Store and as usual everyone enjoyed the outing and morning tea. The June trip will be on Friday 21st and is a great opportunity to pick up some bargain plants. If you are interested you can ring The Hall for further details or to book your place on the bus.

The Old style Dance this month saw St Martin’s Lutheran Hall beautifully decorated by Lisa, who spent several hours c r e a t i n g a ma s t e r p iece consisting of vibrant colours and

a profusion of spangles. Lisa used tribal dance costumes from her own collection and that of fellow dance enthusiast Julie.

Both women have been involved in the Tribal Fusion Belly Dancing classes which have been held in The Hall every Tuesday afternoon from 1:00pm for the past year. Tribal dancing is a fun way to get some exercise and is not an activity that you need to be in great shape to participate in. The dancing is accompanied by exotic music which inspires the spirit and encourages the body to move in a graceful and rhythmic way. If you want to have fun and participate in an activity as old and mysterious as the pyramids then this might be the activity for you.

On June 7th The Hall is adding a new adventure to its repertoire with the inclusion of an eco tour. Local identity and native

plant enthusiast Gavin will guide Hall participants on a bus tour of the region. The tour will include morning tea in Cambrai and a picnic lunch at Meldanda where we will have an opportunity to talk to Ross, who oversees the running of the property which was bequeathed to the Cambrai School. For the environmentalists and eco warriors amongst us this will be an excellent opportunity to see what is happening in sustainability right on our doorstep. January 1916 Saturday 1st Holding Batt. Sports on the old battle field of Tel-el-Kebir.

We fell in and marched out to the old trench at 9:30a.m. - back to camp for dinner and then came out again at 2p.m. Am sitting on top of trench writing this.

Sunday 2nd On guard - it only takes 1-18 men to form guard around our batt. Saw a mail come in today.

Monday 3rd Started delivering the mail today. Parcels and letters galore.

Heavy rain this afternoon.

Tuesday 4th Rain last night and no tents. I have had 1 parcel, 3 papers, and 3 or 4 letters, cards. Two parades today.

Wednesday 5th Two parades - wind bitterly cold and more rain last night.

Thursday 6th Last night colder than ever.

Today a little warmer - the wind still cold. Batt. Just arrived 11:30a.m.

Friday 7th 11th and 12th Batts. Arrived early this morning. On detention guard at 8a.m. Rains every day and / or night - very cold. More troops arrived.

Saturday 8th No parade after coming off guard. Ear-ache last night and today - wet and cold. Pay 200 piastres.

Sunday 9th Just returned from Church parade - first I’ve attended since July 4th. Col’n McPhees last Sunday with the 3rd Brigade.

Wednesday 12th Such a long time since I slept in a decent bed - didn’t turn out till 10a.m. to breakfast. Spent day wandering round. Had hot bath treat. Back to camp about 9p.m. - found tents at last.

Thursday 13th Two parades, nothing special.

Friday 14th Ceremonial; parade this afternoon. Some general inspection. Two papers today.

Guard 5:30p.m. 12 months today since I enlisted.

Saturday 15th Another review today but I missed it being on guard.

Sunday 16th 12:15p.m. Started for church parade this morning, but or platoon was turned back for duty. Am writing this on my way to Cairo. Think we are after prisoners.

Monday 17th Arrived in camp 2:15a.m. instead of 9:30p.m. Took us a few miles past the camp in the train - we had to march back then passed our Batt. Lines to go to Div. Headquarters - then back

to our own lines. We started with 62 prisoners, I reached here with 33. Had this morning off.

Did a little washing kit bag. An aeroplane flew over today - one of ours.

Tuesday 18th Cold wind blowing. Went for a stroll with Leo last night. Just written a card to Mont, Gwen and Carl.

Wednesday 19th Half Holiday. Letter to Annie.

On in-lying picquet tonight - lot of rot. Could express it more forcibly only ladies might get hold of this.

Thursday 20th Received praise this morning for the way we turned out last night - B Coy Brigadiers said everything was perfect even to the steadiness of the troops.

Fancy Australians steady on parade.

Friday 21st Out shooting at miniature targets on other side of canal 1¼ hours march from camp.

Saturday 22nd Parade this morning. Pay this afternoon -100 piastres. Had word on leave here Monday. Kit bags went this afternoon. On guard tonight.

Sunday 23rd Returned to old job storeman today issuing boots and clothing.

Monday 24th More clothes to issue and ammunition and rations. Don’t go till tomorrow.

Tuesday 25th 1:30p.m. Waiting for train at Tel-el-kebir camp station. Very windy and dusty with shower of rain occasionally. 3rd Brgde.

Around (ground?) looks deserted now all tents are down.

Started on train journey at 2:30 in open trucks, very cold wind, a lazy wind as I heard one chap remark - too lazy to go round, it goes straight through you.

Crossed the Canal in barge about 7:30. Reached camp and turned in at 8:30.

Wednesday 26th Camped in Desert -1 blanket and overcoat. Cold was no name for it. Feet like ice. I made myself tired shivering. Stuff arriving by transport miles (Mules?) and armstring (Arms Train?).

Thursday 27th Rain last night but had tents.

More rain this afternoon.

Camped about a mile from Canal. Arabian Sea boats through. Motor train runs past camp. A Coy and I 2 platoons of B on outpost tonight - hot tea to go to them at 11p.m.

Friday 28th More rain last night and this morning. Up early to draw two days rations for C and D Coys going 10 or 12 miles farther out.

Camel transport. Believe this camp is Serapeum East.

Saturday 29th Lovely day - nice and warm wrote a letter today.

Sunday 30th Another nice day. Wrote two more letters. Jam issue today had dates instead since we’ve been here. Water more scarce than Gallipoli. A and B coys on outpost duty tonight Monday 31st Still good weather. General hair cutting in our tent. I made a start on Leo’s. General Archibald Murray passed through the camp in the motor train.

Cambrai Camp Oven Cook Off

ancy yourself as a camp cook? Teams or individuals are invited to compete in a Camp Oven Cook Off. Everything must be cooked in a camp oven or bedourie (camp ovens are cast iron while a bedourie is made from pressed steel).Weber Kettles and other above ground cooking devices will not be permitted.

Competitors are required to prepare dishes in two categories.

1. Flour: Damper or Dessert 2. Meat: Roast or Soup All hot coals and individual cooking sites will be provided and allocated by the organisers.

• The meat category will consist of equal weight of lamb, a chicken, beef roast, pork roast or game Issue Number 80

of your choice (BYO game) with potatoes, carrots and onions supplied by the organisers. Any additional herbs or spices and the like must be supplied by the competitor. You may choose the style of dish, e.g. roast, curry, soup, stew etc.

• The flour category consists of equal weight of plain flour supplied by the organisers. Either a damper or a dessert will meet this category. Any additional ingredients (dried fruit, milk, spices, etc.) must be supplied by the competitor. The finished presentation dish is the decision of the competitor.

At about 5:00pm you will be asked to present a cooked single, plated dish for each category to an independent non competing panel of judges. First Mannum Mag

prize, is a $500 Mt Barker Curtains and Blinds voucher. Prizes in several other categories, will be announced on the day.

Closing date for entries is June 30th 2013. The entry registration fee of $50 includes 2 Dinner meal tickets and live music by Georgette Berry. All Competitors must collect their Tucker Bag and sign in at the Cambrai Hotel by 11am Saturday July 20th 2013. The Cook Off starts at 12 noon.

The Detective Cat t was tea time when Hercule Poitrot arrived, rather breathless, at our back door.

Close behind were two of the neighbourhood dogs. My sister heard the dogs barking and went out to see what the fuss was about. She returned with a small, mangy looking, black kitten.

“Next door’s dogs had trapped the poor thing,” she announced as she returned to the tea table.

“Don’t bring that thing in here,” said my mother in a horrified voice. “You don’t know what it might have.”

So began the battle. Sis for, and Mum against. Dad and I were just spectators.

With tea finished Dad and I quickly disappeared.

“Your mother is fighting a losing battle,” he told me as he went outside to have a smoke.

And so Hercule came to be part of the family. In time the black coat became wonderfully shiny and healthy and Hercule waxed fat on good living.

It was Mum that gave the name Hercule Poirot. She was deep into her Agatha Christie phase and she said that Hercule’s colour reminded her of the shiny black moustaches of Agatha Christie’s fictional detective.

“Besides,” said Mum, “He detects. After all he detected us.

We would be the only family around who didn’t have any pets, particularly dogs.”

Dad thought that it was more likely expediency rather than any inherent detective skill which brought Hercule to our back door.

Still Hercule did seem to have detective like skills. In no time at all the refrigerator was detected as the place where all sorts of heavenly food delights were kept. The cupboard where the canned food was kept was also quickly detected. It was winter and the fire was soon found. Father had to move his chair as the cat soon found the

The house was searched more than once. After more than a week of searching Dad felt it was time to report it to the police and make an insurance claim. The decision was made after dinner one night.

Poirot knew something was up. Investigation by Poirot i n v o l v e d f o l l o wi n g u s everywhere, or perhaps we followed the cat. The end result was a cat that went into sulks after its tail had been trodden on countless times.

With the decision made it was suddenly noticed that Poirot was

absent from the fire. Sis found him in the kitchen reaching a paw into a small gap between the kitchen bench and the refrigerator.

“What are you doing, Poirot?” she asked.

With that Poirot withdrew his paw from the gap. Sis gave a scream which brought us all into the kitchen. There was Poirot with the ring snagged on a claw.

The paw was held up so that the gem caught the light and the cat seemed fascinated by the various colours that were reflected.

After that the cat could do no wrong.

There was one little glitch in Poirot’s life. Not long after the cat found us, a visit to the vet was undertaken. It turned out that Poirot was a she. Mum refused to consider a name change. Not sure what Agatha Christie would have thought about that.
