Orientation week concluded with the new student convocation on Sunday. Students filed into Hamer Hall to hear Dr. Angelo Armenti, Jr., President, California University of Pennsylvania, as well as other speakers, talk about Cal U and his or her experience they’ve had here. President Armenti spoke first on the legacy of Cal U and that each new student in the gym is

now a part of the Cal U tradition and legacy. Armenti also spoke about the importance of “Cal U For Life” and how each student is a big part of this school. Autumn Harris was one of two student speakers. She spoke of the core values that Cal U holds true and also the commitment she has with Cal U. She is a member of the Council of Trustees and also encouraged new students to get involved. Walter Harris III, President of Student Government, also

encouraged students to get involved with Cal U clubs and organizations. “Get involved and stay involved for life,” said Walter Harris III. Marshal Carper, 2009 Alumnus, was the guest speaker. He has written three books since graduating from Cal U. His first book , “The Cauliflower Chronicles,” has gotten much attention. “I was able to write that first book because of Cal U,” said

Carper. He was very grateful for all the opportunities that Cal U provided him. He was also thankful for English Professor Alan Natali for the success he has from writing. Dr. Armenti also spoke about Cal U being the world’s first FranklinCovey Leadership University. President Armenti encourages students to take the “7 Habits” course and take advantage of other opportunities like the new “Leader for Life Program”. After explaining

about being a leader for life, Dr. Armenti shared the importance of donating to the college and helping others with scholarships, then introduced the six $500 scholarship winners. The winners were: Albert Piper Jr. Tremayne Thomas David Roth Emily Vitzel Jacob Longwell The New Student Convocation concluded with a candlelight ceremony outside of Herron, by the Vulcan Statue.

Cal Alum, Josh Portis helps Seahawks win preseason opener By Sports Information For the Cal Times

Former California University of Pennsylvania quarterback Josh Portis (Woodland Hills, Calif./William H. Taft) led a pair of fourth-quarter touchdown drives, including the gamewinner, on Thursday night in his professional debut to help lead the Seattle Seahawks to a 24-17 preseason win over the San Diego Chargers on ESPN. Portis, a two-year starter for the Vulcans (2009-10), completed five-of-nine attempts for 69 yards, highlighted by a game-tying six-yard touchdown to tight end Anthony McCoy. He also displayed his mobility in and out of the pocket, rushing for seven yards on four attempts. The 6-3, 211-pound quarterback entered the game on the final possession of the third quarter with the Seahawks trailing 17-10. Following a threeand-out on his first possession under center, Portis moved Seattle 25 yards and into San Diego territory on his next possession before the drive resulted in a turnover on downs. Portis then directed a 10-play, 84-yard touchdown drive midway through the fourth quarter.

Photo By: Joshua Laska Josh Portis (12) throws a pass against East Stroudsburg last football season. Portis led the Vulcans with 205 completions on 335 attempts and 33 touchdowns.

On the first play of the drive, he connected with wide receiver Chris Carter for an eight-yard reception – his first completion of the night. Portis went five-forsix for 69 yards on the drive with a six-yard touchdown to McCoy with 4:10 left in the game.

On the next play from scrimmage, Seattle forced and recovered a fumble deep in San Diego territory. Portis then led a two-play, 22-yard drive to give the Seahawks their first lead of the game, 24-17, with 3:05 remaining.

The Seahawks’ defense made a fourth-down stand inside their own red zone on the Chargers’ ensuing possession before Portis took two kneel downs to seal the victory. In his two years with the Vulcans, Portis broke the all-time

school record with 69 touchdown passes and threw for over 6,000 yards. As a junior in 2009, he set single-season school records for passing yards, touchdowns and total offense.

MTVU & NYSE JOIN FORCES TO DISCOVER RISING ENTREPRENEURS IN THIRD ANNUAL “MOVERS & CHANGERS” COMPETITION WINNING STUDENTS TO RECEIVE $25,000 PRIZE IN START-UP FUNDS & WILL BE FEATURED IN RETURNING MTVU SERIES THIS FALL FOUNDERS OF FOURSQUARE, CHARMING CHARLIE AND GILT GROUPE TO SERVE AS AMBASSADORS FOR THE PROGRAM

New York, NY – August 22, 2011 – mtvU, the 24-hour college network of Viacom’s (NYSE: VIA, VIA.B) MTV, and the New York Stock Exchange (NYSE), a unit of NYSE Euronext, today launched the third-annual “Movers & Changers” competition, a nationwide challenge to find the country’s next wave of leading entrepreneurs. Competition finalists will be featured in the mtvU “Movers & Changers” short-form series, premiering this fall on mtvU, and compete for the ultimate prize of $25,000 in start-up money, as well as the once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to ring The Opening BellSM at the New York Stock Exchange. “We’re excited to reunite with Viacom and mtvU on the quest to find America’s next generation of young innovators and entrepreneurs,” said Marisa Ricciardi, Senior Vice President, NYSE Euronext Global Head of Marketing. “The ‘Movers & Changers’ competition is a perfect platform for college students to express their creativity, showcase their inventive ideas and realize their dreams.” “America’s colleges are incubators for some of the most innovative and successful business ideas in the world,” said Carlo DiMarco, Senior Vice President of mtvU University Relations. “mtvU’s partnership with NYSE Euronext provides the ideal route to take the country’s best young minds from the classroom to the boardroom.” Some of today’s top young entrepreneurs will serve as ambassadors for the “Movers & Changers” program, including Dennis Crowley, CEO and Cofounder of foursquare; Charlie Chanaratsopon, CEO and Founder of Charming Charlie; and Alexis Maybank and Alexandra Wilkis Wilson, Co-founders of Gilt Groupe. The ambassadors can be seen in promos for the program at www.moversandchangers.com. The Competition “Movers & Changers” calls on 16-28 year old college students, individually or in teams of up to three people, to develop and produce a compelling business proposal. Ideas must be creative, original, and scalable to large corporations. Students can submit entries online at www.moversandchangers.com and are encouraged to submit a video “elevator pitch” application from now until Oct. 3, 2011. The competition will culminate at the Movers & Changers Forum on Monday, Nov. 14, 2011, taking place during NYSE Euronext’s Global Entrepreneurship Week. The top five business proposals will be voted on by the college audience and two teams will then be flown to New York City for the Movers & Changers Forum, where they will ring the NYSE Opening Bell. The grand prize winner will be announced on stage at the NYSE. mtvU and the NYSE unveiled the first-ever “Movers & Changers” competition in 2009 and followed it up with a successful 2010 campaign. Last year, each team of finalists presented its business plan to the “Movers and Changers” Board, a gathering of top business and social media professionals that included Entertainer and Chairman of TeenNick, Nick Cannon; CNBC’s Jim Cramer; CEO of (RED) Susan Smith Ellis; Tumblr Founder David Karp; and Next Jump Inc’s CEO and Chairman Charlie Kim. In an extremely competitive field, the judges chose University of Tennessee students Aeron Glover and Kaliv Parker as the Grand Prize Winner. Glover and Parker impressed the “Movers & Changers” Board with their eloquent presentation and wellconceived business idea, “HowstheLiving.com,” an international student review housing site. The “Movers & Changers” competition with mtvU and Viacom is one of many collaborations between NYSE Euronext and its listed-issuer community and underscores NYSE Euronext’s commitment to inspire the next generation of young entrepreneurs, new and established enterprises, investors and the public to innovate and gain a better understanding of finance and global capital markets. Entertainment Wrap-up In Theaters

By Jessica Zombek Editor in Chief

Saturday Night Live characters Kristen Wiig and Maya Rudolph star in “Bridesmaids”, a hilarious movie about a bride (Maya Rudolf) and her love sick friend (Kristen Wiig). They are joined with Ellie Kemper, Melissa McCarthy, Rose Byrne and Wendi McLendon-Cove. The movie follows these women as Rudolph becomes the typical “bridezilla” and angers the mild-mannered Wiig into insanity. The hilarious antics include everything from food poisoning at the dress fitting to a lavish, over the top, wedding shower where Wiig looses it and tries to knock over a huge fountain of chocolate fondue. “Bridesmaids” exaggerate literally every cliché of the bride, wedding, and the unspoken rivalry between the maid-ofhonor and the rest of the jealous bridesmaids in the most hilarious ways, and instead of bringing tissues to dry happy tears of the beautiful wedding at the end, tissues will be needed to dry the tears flowing from your eyes from laughing so hard at the ridiculous scenarios these ladies encounter on the journey to the alter. Grand Canyon exhibit featured By Cal U Public Affairs For the Cal Times

The Grand Canyon is wild and unforgiving. But it is also one of the most stunning landscapes on Earth, a place for recreation, reflection and reverence. An exhibition opening this month at California University of Pennsylvania allows us to marvel at this natural wonder without camping equipment, emergency rations or rappelling ropes. Featuring 60 color photographs, Lasting Light: 125 Years of Grand Canyon. Photography is a collaboration between the Smithsonian Institution Traveling Exhibition Service and the Grand Canyon Association. The exhibition will be on view from Sept. 9 to Nov. 7 in

the Manderino Gallery on Cal U’s campus in California, Pa. The exhibition’s national tour continues through 2013. Covering nearly 125 years of photographic history, the exhibition includes images of early photographers dangling from cables to get the perfect shot, their cumbersome camera equipment balanced precariously on their shoulders. More modern images are bold and dramatic, revealing the canyon’s capricious weather, its flora and fauna, waterfalls and wading pools, and awe-inspiring cliffs and rock formations. The stunning contemporary images were selected by representatives from Eastman Kodak’s Professional Photography Division and National Geographic. Grand Canyon National Park, 2,000 square miles of snaking river beds and sheer rock walls, is a world like no other, where

vibrant cliffs and flowing water create a striking complement to the Western sky. What you do is keep it for your children, your children’s children, and for all who come after you, as one of the great sights which every American should see, Teddy Roosevelt urged. Roosevelt, ever the naturalist, was just one of the canyon’s devotees. There are millions of others, including the 26 featured photographers of Lasting Light, who ran the river and climbed the rocks to capture these breathtaking images. About the collaborator The Grand Canyon Association is a nonprofit membership organization founded to support education, scientific research and other programs for the benefit of Grand Canyon National Park and its visitors. The Internship Corner By Lucie Fremeau

The first week of classes is the first week of the rest of your life. Starting a new semester can be exciting and nerve-racking at the same time. In order to make the most of the semester, students should soak up every possible opportunity. Internships play a large role in the success and education of college students. Involvement in on-campus organizations and clubs aids prospective interns in making connections with professionals and professors that will lead to opportunities in the field of your choice. Another place to begin the search for an internship is the Internship Center, located on the second floor of the Eberly Science and Technology Center. There, students may search available internships and receive help filling out forms. In addition to visiting the Internship Center, students should also make an appointment with Career Services, which is also located on the second floor of Eberly. Career Services helps students create or update a resume and prepare for interviews by participating in a mock interview. Career Services and the Internship Center will ensure that students are well rounded and prepared for an exciting and beneficial internship. Although starting the semester and finding an internship may be stressful, there are multiple facilities on campus that simplify the process and help reduce stress.
