A HISTORY OF SUCCESS If you take courses on the history of American sport, social history or African-American history at Cal U, you will get to know Dr. Kelton Edmonds. Dr. Edmonds came to us in the fall of 2005 as the Frederick Douglass Institute Visiting Scholar and was hired as tenure-track faculty in the History Department the following academic year. An expert in African-American studies, he has re-established Black History Month as a major campus event and organizes the annual Hip-hop Conference to examine the genre's eﬀect on society, the arts and history. 6

Dr. Edmonds has a passion for his work as a historian and a Cal U professor. “I enjoy knowing my students. It allows me to relate ‘history’ to them personally, and creates a dialogue in which they know they are respected as a person and not just a student number.” His favorite course to teach is African-American History, in which he applies a student-centered approach, believing that students ultimately teach themselves by interacting with him and, more importantly, each other.

Bones fascinate Dr. Cassandra Kuba, an assistant professor in the Department of Justice Law and Society at Cal U.

Dr. Kuba has helped law enforcement in searches, recoveries and skeletal analyses. And she takes her students with her.

She believes the human skeleton has a lot to say for itself.

“Students are an integral part of the forensic team. Cases often involve trekking out into the woods, hauling equipment and spending several hours searching for and processing a scene.”

“So much of our life histories are recorded by our skeletons. I wanted to learn how to read those stories as represented by the bones and be able to pass along that knowledge to others. I love seeing the fascination on the faces of my students.”

Dr. Kuba also answers technical questions for mystery novelists and the writers of television crime dramas, such as CSI: Crime Scene Investigation, Bones, and Rizzoli & Isles.

TEACHER IN THE WILD Dr. Summer Arrigo-Nelson takes her passion for teaching biological and environmental sciences from the classroom to the field. “Cal U is a very dynamic place to work. My department has recently hired a number of new faculty members and oﬀers a wide variety of courses, internships and field experiences for our students.”

Dr. Arrigo-Nelson’s recent fieldwork on primates gives her students an in-depth understanding of biology, evolution and conservation. “I developed the Madagascar Field School program so that Cal U students could have the opportunity to gain an international perspective. They spend a month living in the forest of Madagascar, where they learn how to monitor tropical biodiversity, explore Malagasy culture and examine the impact of invasive species within the rainforest.”

WORDS OF ADVICE: “Life is all about risks, and if you’re willing to take the risk, that one chance might take you a long way.”

A WINNING ATTITUDE Giovanni Morales applied to Cal U as a junior in high school in Philadelphia. “I heard so much about the environment. Cal U gave me an opportunity to explore and expand my horizons.” Which is exactly what he’s been doing. Today he’s a member of Cal Rocks, The Catholic Group and Alpha Lambda Delta. He’s also joined the Hispanic Student Association.“These groups have helped me in building a resumé.”

His winning attitude has proven itself in sports as well. He played on Cal U’s baseball team, the 2010 PSAC champions. “Such a great experience to have scored the game-winning run!” A business administration major, Giovanni said his current goal is to have an internship with the Philadelphia Phillies.

Peer mentors are the best way for you to feel right at home from your first moment on campus. And even before you arrive. The Peer Mentoring program can pair you with an upper-class student volunteer who will help you fit right in.

Typically, your peer mentor will be from your academic department and will be knowledgeable about classes and requirements within your major. But he or she also will know a great deal about campus activities, clubs and organizations, speakers and special events.
