Guiding hands

Cal U reviews applications from all incoming freshmen and transfer students. Those with the highest indicators of past and future academic success are invited to apply for this highly selective program. After reading each applicant’s personal essay, we accept only those students most likely to excel in our innovative educational community. Honors students are an exclusive group, comprising just six percent of our campus population.

The Cal U Honors Program offers a range of unique opportunities. Active, hands-on learning is exemplified by the Summer Honors Program, which provides two students with full scholarships to study abroad in places such as England, Bermuda, Ghana and Ecuador. Research is at the core of the Honors experience, and students are encouraged to present their academic work at local, national and international conferences, and to publish in nationally recognized journals. In addition, Honors students are eligible for two awards: the Senior Thesis Project Award and the Outstanding Honors Program Graduating Senior Award. With these kinds of experiences in hand, many Honors Program students pursue graduate and professional degrees at prestigious national universities.

All students in the Honors Program are advised by the director and the associate director. Faculty members on the Honors Advisory Board also provide guidance. The Honors Thesis gives students an opportunity to build mentor-student relationships as they complete their capstone project.

Extraordinary learning opportunities outside the classroom await members of the Cal U Honors community.

Honors courses are restricted to members of the Honors Program, taught by Cal U’s most innovative and active faculty, and offered at all class levels. Class size is small – typically about 20 students – to encourage student–faculty interaction and build an active learning community. Most regular University courses have an Honors component. If you select these courses, you will work beyond the requirements of other students by pursuing an innovative, faculty-guided research project that enhances your knowledge of the subject. All courses taken for Honors credit will be indicated on your academic transcript.

7,417 undergraduate students and 2,066 graduate students

Opportunity, challenge, excellence University life presents both challenges and opportunities. From scholarships to mentoring, our close-knit Honors community provides invaluable support for all your Cal U experiences. Honors students have access to Honors-specific academic scholarships, as well as dedicated funding for research and travel. Your fellow Honors Program students, advisers and faculty members will help you to excel at Cal U and beyond.

A degree of excellence In order to receive an Honors Degree, you must maintain a minimum grade-point average, complete a minimum of 24 Honors credits and complete an Honors Thesis, an extended research and/or creative project conducted under the mentorship of a faculty member. Not only does this thesis mark the pinnacle of your undergraduate experience, it demonstrates to potential employers and graduate schools that you are capable of high-quality work. An Honors Degree gives you a competitive advantage, whether you choose to attend graduate school or enter the workforce after graduation.
